LOS ANGELES (CNS) — In what Bishop Donald W. Trautman called “a truly important moment in liturgy in the United States,” the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops approved a new English translation of the Order of Mass and adopted several U.S. adaptations during a national meeting June 15 in Los Angeles. The new translation of the main constant parts of the Mass — penitential rite, Gloria, creed, eucharistic prayers, eucharistic acclamations, Our Father and other prayers and responses used daily — will likely be introduced in about a year or two if it is approved by the Vatican, said Bishop Trautman, a Scripture scholar who heads the Diocese of Erie, Pa., and is chairman of the USCCB Committee on the Liturgy. He said he thought the bishops would wait until they have approved — and received Vatican confirmation of — an entire new Roman Missal in English before implementing the new Order of Mass. The text that the bishops approved included only the main parts of the Order of Mass, the daily prayers with which people are most familiar. The bishops still have to receive and approve other parts of the Order of Mass, such as the prefaces, and the major portion of the Roman Missal comprising the proper prayers for each Sunday or feast throughout the year. These are still in the early stages of translation and consultation among English-speaking bishops around the world. When the new translation of the texts the bishops adopted in Los Angeles takes effect, with possible Vatican modifications, U.S. Catholics will find that many of the familiar prayers and responses they have been using at Mass for the past 35 years or so will be changed. After approving more than 60 amendments to the universal English translation of the Latin Order of Mass proposed by the International Commission on English in the Liturgy, the bishops approved the revised version by a vote of 173-29. They then approved a set of American adaptations — alternate prayers or ritual instructions not contained in the original Latin version — by a vote of 184-8. Although only about 80 percent of the 254 Latin-rite bishops in the ORDER OF MASS, page 8

Bishops hear Hispanic young adults at Notre Dame gathering NOTRE DAME, Ind. (CNS) - Thirty Hispanic young adults from around the Archdiocese of San Francisco were among nearly 2,500 young adults and diocesan leaders joining June 8-11 at the National Encuentro for Hispanic Youth and Young Adult Ministry at the University of Notre Dame. The “encuentro,” Spanish for “gathering,” was the first national event of its kind for Catholic Hispanic young people and focused on their needs, aspirations and contributions relative to the Church. The goal of the conference was to develop a common vision and pastoral principles, which will be presented to the U.S. bishops. Some 20 bishops attended at least some of the events along with Honduran Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga of Tegucigalpa who gave a keynote address. Delegates from the Archdiocese of San Francisco were organized under the Office of Young Adult Ministry and Campus Ministry and were joined by Msgr. Jose Rodriguez, Vicar for Spanish Speaking in the archdiocese; Cecilia Arias-Rivas, Hispanic Ministry coordinator; and Mary Jansen, Director of Young Adult Ministry. They along with other participants were greeted at Notre Dame by Fort Wayne-South Bend Bishop John M. D’Arcy. Bishop D’Arcy told the crowd that they were on a campus dedicated to Mary and he pointed out that the Mary who is honored as Our Lady of Lourdes at the grotto on the Notre Dame campus is the same Mary honored as Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of all the Americas.The bishop urged the young people to visit the grotto, saying that “this beautiful event” should be placed in the hands of Mary. “You must go there,” Bishop D’Arcy urged. “Of course you will take pictures, but you must say a rosary and sing a Spanish hymn to her and pray to her,” and ask for guidance in finding “your vocation in life.” In his keynote address Cardinal Maradiaga stressed the contributions of

taking jobs away from anyone, nor their way of making a living,” he said to cheers and applause. “For this reason, they can’t be called bad, usurpers or criminals.” Today, the task of young Hispanics is to contribute to society in all areas, from meteorology to medicine and from art to language, said Cardinal Rodriguez. Young Hispanic Catholics have one of the best chances to build the U.S. and the church because they are open to new ways of doing
things, to new cultures and to dialogue, he said. They “have a unique capacity to make new relationships,” he said, challenging his listeners to begin by forging relationships with new Hispanic immigrants. The Hispanic immigrant arriving today needs a partner who will walk with him on the journey of his new life, the cardinal said. “Love them with the love of God. Look at them with the eyes of God the Father, the one who respects life. Accompany them with humility, putting yourself at the service of others,” he said. Twenty-five year old Robert Vallarino of Sts. Peter and Paul Church in San Francisco said Encuentro was a “rare opportunity for me to be a part of pastoral dialogue where the Church listened to our unique perspectives and generated discussions that can transform the way the Catholic Church of the USA welcomes and ministers among millions of future Hispanic young people.” Other San Francisco area delegates said they appreciated the opportunity to meet and share faith with other Hispanic young adults from around the country. Many came away with a sense of deeper commitment to their faith and to working for the cause of evangelization. “We are coming back home with a great responsibility, common vision, and committed to promote prophetic leaders to improve our ministry,” said Nancy Torres Mayorga, a twenty year old delegate from St. Anthony of Padua Parish in Menlo Park. Carlos Rivas of Saint Bruno Parish said he and other delegates were motivated “to live the new day with God to the fullest.” The eighteen year old said he was going to get more involved to make a difference through his parish young adult group. “I want to do more than just go to the meetings every Friday.” Catholic San Francisco staff contributed to this report.

Archbishop Lawrence John Saldanha of Lahore, Pakistan, visited San Francisco last week as part of a U.S. tour to raise awareness about the conditions of religious minorities in Pakistan. Archbishop Saldanha, as chairman of the Pakistani Bishops’ Peace and Justice Committee, was promoting an interfaith effort to seek curtailment of his country’s restrictive blasphemy laws and expand religious freedom. The archbishop met June 16 with staff of the Archdiocesan Office of Public Policy and Social Concerns to brief them on the situation of Christians in Pakistan and to hear about the work and methods employed by an American church office dealing with issues of justice and peace. On June 18 he celebrated Mass at St. Gabriel parish in San Francisco and he made a visit with San Francisco Archbishop George H. Niederauer June 19. Archbishop Saldanha later traveled to Washington, D.C. to brief staff at the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Catholics represent about one percent of the population in predominately Muslim Pakistan. A primary ministry of the Church in Pakistan is education. “Our people are very poor and socially marginalized,” he

said, and education is the most important way for such people to advance. The Church also makes its “presence felt” through educational and healthcare ministries which serve many Muslims and other non-Catholics Christians are often viewed suspiciously, and unfairly, as “representing the West,”

As such they bare the brunt of hostile reaction to news announcements of “excesses” in the West such as the Danish cartoon controversy. “They blame us for what has happened,” Archbishop Saldanha said. News about the war on terror also brings hostility to Christians, said Archbishop Saldanha who
ironically was installed Archbishop on Sept. 11, 2001. Forty-four Christians have been killed as a result of the cartoon controversy and reaction to the war on terror in recent years, Archbishop Saldanha said. The laws and social attitudes regarding blasphemy also make life difficult for Christians. When recently a Christian was falsely accused of blasphemy, mobs destroyed Protestant and Catholic churches and attacked a hospital and school. Those responsible, as well as the Christian were jailed. When the Christian was acquitted, he and the rioters were released. The rioters went back to their homes without consequence, Archbishop Saldanha said, but the Christian can never return home because of the “stigma of even being accused” of blasphemy. What constitutes blasphemy is “very vague,” Archbishop Saldanha said, “whatever offends Muslim sensibilities – that is blasphemy.” While changing the blasphemy laws is an important goal, Archbishop Saldanha said, more important is changing attitudes. The state has never executed a person for blasphemy, he said, but people are killed nonetheless. “The trouble is, people take the law into their own hands.”

Pilgrimage or cruise? . . . ■ Continued from cover As you navigate those twists and turns, does it help to choose an image for the journey you hope to take? Maybe so. As I look around at the cultural scene we share, two metaphors for a life journey occur to me. One is ancient, the other fairly recent. They are the ocean cruise and the pilgrimage. These images are not literal but attitudinal. You will behave differently if you believe you are on a cruise or on a pilgrimage. First let’s look at the ocean cruise. Cruises have never been more popular. Sixty years ago they were for only the very wealthy, but now they are available to more people than ever before. Full disclosure demands that I admit I have enjoyed such a vacation. However, looked at objectively, the cruise is an odd sort of journey. It’s movement for its own sake, not to reach a destination. The passengers fly to a city, board a ship, sail around for several days, then dock (often at the same city) and fly home. Why do we do it? Well, to let the crew pamper us, to enjoy the beauty and the activities of the ship, to eat. Also, to inhale the ocean air, and to visit several quaint, interesting ports of call. Admittedly the cruise is a largely passive experience: almost exclusively, passengers are receiving and taking. A cruise vacation need not make us feel guilty, but it is quite a bit like dessert. A diet consisting only of desserts would be unhealthy and cloying. As a model for a lifelong journey we need something other than “the perfect escape” or “the great getaway.” Let me propose the pilgrimage as a model for a journey through life. Classically, a pilgrimage is a journey to and from a sacred place for a spiritual motive: to give thanks, to gain help, or for the sake of devotion. Pilgrims ordinarily travel together. Most world religions have a tradition of pilgrimage: for Jews, the destination was often the Temple in Jerusalem, and now the Western Wall; for Christians, it is the Holy Land or a saint’s shrine; for Muslims it is Mecca; for Buddhists, places associated with the Buddha’s life and teaching; for Hindus, sublime, beautiful places in nature as aids to contemplation. Hilltops, mountain slopes, riverbanks, the seashore are often the sites of Hindu temples. Maria Ruiz and Michael Scaperlanda, writing in “The Journey: A Guide for the Modern Pilgrim,” say this: “Each of us is on a pilgrimage from birth to death . . . . Finding the material answers inadequate, we seek answers in the transcendent, and our pilgrimages intentionally become spiritual quests. A physical pilgrimage to a sacred site is an outward manifestation leading toward a deeper understanding of God and a more profound awareness of God’s great love for us.”
Our pilgrimage needn’t be a literal trip. In the fifth century St. Jerome told a friend, “You can reach the court of heaven as well from Britain as from Jerusalem.” The pilgrimage as a model for life’s journey recognizes the spiritual dimension. That’s what is crucial. As Nicholas Harnan observes, “Life is a journey with a very special purpose: to foster our full human growth and spiritual development, to realize God’s dream for us.” What matters is that we make our own the vision of the pilgrim: we sense and salute the sacredness of the life of God within us, and within the people and the world around us. For the pilgrim the road is not just a means toward an end. The road itself is sacred, holy; it is a gift from God and it leads to God. If we reverence the world as we pass through it, we are less likely to trash it, abuse it and spoil it for those who come after us. Owen Campion remarks that pilgrimage demands that people are open to what God can do: “they have to be open to change.” The pilgrim must be active, engaged in, and committed to the journey. He or she will meet the unexpected, the unplanned, in all life’s aspects: physical, social, political, economic, moral and spiritual. The pilgrim spirit in life teaches us a lesson in trust. As one pilgrim recalls: “When I have traveled to other places, I have had to accept whatever the road had to offer—the accommodations, the companions, the weather, and the tedious or dramatic situations.” The crew of the cruise ship tries to keep those uncertainties to a minimum, but everyday life does not. Life’s pilgrim will grow through experience. That’s what John Henry Newman meant when he observed that to grow is to change, and to grow much is to change often. The pilgrim spirit encourages such growth. In the nineteenth century Chateaubriand said, “There never was a pilgrim who did not come back to his village with one less prejudice and one more idea.” A century later, Charles de Foucauld, who lived among Muslims in North Africa, said of those returning from hajj that ”they come back more tolerant, more just and more pious than they had been before they set out for Mecca.” A pilgrim is more likely than a passenger to welcome the unexpected or the unplanned as an agent for good. There are no genuine guarantees in life, so it is possible to turn a pilgrimage into a cruise. The pilgrim spirit is not that of the tourist. In the fifteenth century Thomas a Kempis said of the pilgrim-tourists of his day, “they that go much on pilgrimage be seldom thereby made perfect and holy.” Quite a few of Chaucer’s Canterbury pilgrims vividly illustrate that point. The cruise ship passenger might understandably say, “We’ve paid a lot for this trip, and it better be perfect.” That’s not a pilgrim sentiment, however. Life’s pilgrim has to recognize and implement several spiritual conditions: 1) the need to shed the work of the anxious ego; 2) the need to avoid a constantly consuming, hollow heart; 3) the need not to become so immersed in time as to forget eternity.

Those goals are hard to achieve in this place and time. The art critic Robert Hughes, in his book, “The Culture of Complaint,” claims that “the self is the sacred cow in our culture.” It’s easy to nod in agreement, and even to go along with the old saw that the smallest package in the world is the human being wrapped up in himself or herself. What’s tough is to apply that insight to my self, to my behavior, to catch myself forming my own sacred bovine habits. The pilgrim spirit, recognizing the deep and precious value of the world and the people around us, helps lessen the danger of self-absorption and self-centeredness. A few years ago the film critic Richard Schickel, in a review, described some of the movie’s characters this way: “postmodern urbanites who think far too much about themselves and feel far too little for each other.” If we insist on lives that are like ocean cruises, as troublefree and undemanding as money and power can make them, we lose the light, the freedom and the joy that the pilgrim spirit can offer, and we begin to hear the lowing of the sacred herd. If we do join the herd of constant self-regard, we are likely to develop a distaste for diversity. We may yearn to create a separate enclave of people who look like us, think like us, talk like us, and act like us. To some extent this yearning has produced the gated community. I’m not attacking a certain kind of real estate development; rather, I’m urging that we not end up with gated minds, gated hearts, and gated lives. That would frustrate the potential within each of us, as well as the potential for all of us together. We just heard Madeleine Delbrel celebrate life as a dance before God, full of spontaneity, movement, and joy. Fifteen hundred years ago, the bishop St. Augustine gave his people this advice: “So, then, my brothers and sisters, let us sing now, not in order to enjoy a life of leisure, but in order to lighten our labors. You should sing as wayfarers do . . . to make your journey more enjoyable. Sing, then, but keep going.” Good advice in the fifth century, and in the twenty-first. Pilgrims are likely to dance and break into song along their way. Passengers are more likely to pay others to sing and dance for them. So the cruise makes a good vacation, but a pilgrim lives a fuller life. Vayan con Dios—Go with God!

Six men to be ordained permanent deacons By Jack Smith Bishop John C. Wester will ordain six men as permanent deacons Sunday, June 25 at the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption. All are invited to the 3:30 p.m. Mass and reception afterward. Bishop Wester also acts as representative for Archbishop George H. Niederauer who will be in Rome to receive the pallium from Pope Benedict XVI along with other newly installed Metropolitan Archbishops from around the world. The men to be ordained deacons represent parishes in each county of the archdiocese and a variety of professional and ministerial backgrounds. Their ordination follows a five-year course of preparation which included classes, days of recollection, yearly retreats and formation in ministry at their home parishes. John Harvey Rittenhouse was born in Queens, New York, and has been married to Diana Louise Rittenhouse for 31 years. They are members of Saint Hilary parish in Marin and have resided in Belvedere for ten years. The couple and their three children, Michael Ryan (27), Nicholas Arthur (21) and Kristin Rose (18), are avid sailors and all enjoy living on the coast and the abundance of water and outdoor sports. John Harvey Rittenhouse John is employed by KPMG LLP in San Francisco and is their National Practice leader, and Diana is currently the Director of Religious Education at Saint Hilary Parish and School. Both John and Diana are members of the Board of Regents at Saint Patrick’s Seminary and University in Menlo Park. John is the current chair of the Strategic and Nominating committees and will be the chairman of the board in October of this year. John is also on the Board of Directors of the San Francisco Yacht Club and is a Trustee for the city of Belvedere. John and Diana have been active for years at St.
Hilary serving as Extraordinary Ministers, lectors, teachers of Religious Education, directors and teachers of Confirmation & First Eucharist programs and program directors for married couples in the “Refocus” program. John and Diana love helping others in their community and seeking the diaconate for John “seemed to be a natural evolution” to the many ministries the couple have been involved in. John looks forward to serving his bishops and pastor “in whatever capacity they deem appropriate.” Benjamin S. Salvan is a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Pacifica and is a retired United Airlines employee. Benjamin married Eden Adea in 1965 and the couple had four children; Benjamin Francisco, Joseph Levy, David Leonardo and Matthew Jonathan. Benjamin has three grandchildren. Eden passed away in 2000. Since 2002, Benjamin has been particularly active Benjamin S. Salvan as a volunteer at the Missionaries of Charity “Gift of Love” home for the chronically ill, HIV/AIDS and hospice residents, a ministry he looks forward to continuing after ordination. Benjamin wouldn’t pinpoint any one event that led him to seek the Diaconate, rather, he “undertook this journey one step at a time with a prayer, ‘If it is God’s will, God’s will be done.’” Benjamin has gained “strength and inspiration” from the less fortunate he serves with the Missionaries of Charity. He hopes to “learn to be more compassionate . . . just like the sisters.” When Benjamin entered the diaconate program, he “felt like a Kindergartener as far as my spiritual and scriptural knowledge.” He is thankful for the preparation of “very competent teachers like Fr. David Pettingill.” One of the most important things Benjamin has learned in formation is “the full meaning of the phrase, ‘it is not about you – it’s about the Lord and your neighbor.”
Richard Foley was born in San Francisco and baptized at Mission Dolores. His family moved to Burlingame, where he still lives and is a member of Our Lady of Angels parish. Richard has two brothers (one deceased) and son who is a journalist for the TriValley Herald in Pleasanton. In his early teens Richard felt a calling to become a priest, but after high school decided to become a teacher. Richard Foley Richard has been a public school teacher and administrator for 34 years. As an administrator he has served as a principal, superintendent, curriculum director and staff developer. He received a doctorate in education from the University of San Francisco in 1986. Richard’s ministry experience at Our Lady of Angels includes assisting in Baptism and Confirmation preparation programs, RCIA, youth programs, visiting the homeless and assisting with the Sunday prayer services at Saint Vincent de Paul’s Ozanam Center in San Francisco. Thomas Reardon is a member of St. Gabriel parish in San Francisco and has been married to Barbara for 40 years. The couple have two children; Richard and Elizabeth and seven grandchildren; Connor (10), Liam (8), Aidan (4), Emily (2), Fiona (22 months) and Jack (3 months). Thomas is now retired from a career as a telecommuniThomas Reardon cations technician. Thomas has been active in detention ministry for 13 years and visits the homebound of St. Gabriel parish. He plans to continue these ministries after ordination and looks forward to getting more involved with the Saint Vincent de Paul Society at the parish conference level and through the Society’s downtown homeless shelter.
When Thomas retired, his then pastor, Fr. Wilton Smith, suggested he make a 30-day silent retreat based on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. The experience gave Thomas “time and solitude to pray . . . and give serious considerations to how I could best use my retirement years to serve the Church.” Following that discernment, he entered the diaconate program where he became strongly convicted that “that despite poverty or persecution, we best imitate Christ by communicating to all persons the gift of salvation. This is the mission of the Church. This is what all Disciples of Christ are called to do.” Larry Chatmon of St. Paul of the Shipwreck parish in San Francisco was born in Canton, Mississippi and attended Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. He is married to Loretta and has four children; Dr. Lawrence H. Chatmon, Dr. Kevin C. Chatmon, Renee Chatmon and Darryl Chatmon. Larry works for the City and County of San Francisco’s Human Services Agency as Larry Chatmon Senior Contract Manager. His ministry at St. Paul of the Shipwreck includes service and assistance to the Christian Men of Shipwreck and the Black Catholic Advisory Council. Larry’s decision to seek the diaconate was fed by his “desire to serve people who have been disenfranchised, lost

their faith and are struggling to make sense of things that are happening around them.” He sees his secular work as putting him in touch with the “real needs” of the community which enables him to use “knowledge of community-building and faith to bridge the chasm that exists between those who make decisions and those who have no representation.” Aside from the liturgical and sacramental responsibilities of a deacon, Larry sees “a great need to teach people to be empowered by the Holy Spirit and their faith to change their lives.” Larry credits the diaconate program with fostering his “knowledge and belief that people from all walks of life, cultures, backgrounds and experiences can grow to love and care about one another,” he said. “The artificial barriers that society places on us can be dissolved with a focus on why we all exist – ‘to serve God and one another.’” Michael Murphy is a Bay Area native and has been married to Natalie for 26 years. The St. Charles, San Carlos parishioners are parents to 17 year old son Patrick who is a high school junior. Michael teaches eighth grade Religion and Math at St. Joseph’s School of the Sacred Heart in Atherton where he also is active in campus ministry. Order of Mass . . . ■ Continued from cover country were at the Los Angeles meeting, the votes of members in attendance were more than enough to meet the two-thirds majority (170) of all the nation’s Latin bishops that was required to pass liturgical decisions. Some of the changes people will see when the new version eventually takes effect will be: Whenever the priest says “The Lord be with you,” the people will respond “And with your spirit.” The current response is “And also with you.” — In the first form of the penitential rite, the people will confess that “I have sinned greatly ... through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault.” In the current version, that part of the prayer is much shorter: “I have sinned through my own fault.” — The Nicene Creed will begin “I believe” instead of “We believe” — a translation of the Latin text instead of the original Greek text. During the offertory prayers, the priest will pray that “the sacrifice which is mine and yours will be acceptable” instead of the current prayer that “our sacrifice will be acceptable.” Before the preface, when the priest says “Let us give thanks to the Lord our God,” instead of saying “It is right to give him thanks and praise,” the people will respond “It is right and just.” The Sanctus will start “Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God of hosts.” The current version says “Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might.” In 2001 the Vatican issued new rules requiring liturgical translations to follow the original Latin more strictly and completely — a more literal translation approach called formal
equivalence — and the resulting new translation adheres far more closely to the normative Latin text issued by the Vatican. In an address to the bishops before they debated and voted on the new text and American adaptations, Bishop Arthur Roche of Leeds, England, president of the International Commission on English in the Liturgy, argued that the dynamic equivalence approach has come under increasing criticism from linguists in recent years and said that the more literal translations in many places will restore scriptural references that disappeared or were less evident in the earlier liturgy translations into English done in the dynamic equivalence style. ICEL, a commission composed of representatives of 11 of the main English-speaking bishops’ conferences in the world, oversees common English translations of Latin liturgical texts to be presented to the bishops’ conferences for their approval. The bishops’ conferences are free to accept or amend the ICEL texts or to create their own translations, but whatever text a bishops’ conference adopts, it must ultimately meet Vatican approval before it can be issued for liturgical use in that country. Stressing the point that the changes will be introduced in a year or two, if the Vatican approves the changes, San Francisco Archbishop George H. Niederauer said, “This doesn’t move from the bishops’ meeting last week to the pulpit next week.” Bishop Trautman predicted that when the changes are introduced, the U.S. bishops will treat the occasion as “a major catechetical moment” to try to educate Catholics about the changes and to seek ways to get Catholics to understand and accept the changes in a constructive way that helps them deepen their appreciation of the liturgy. Their example led him to believe that the diaconate might be the path that would help him reach his goal of becoming more deeply involved “in service to God and the Church.” Michael will serve as a deacon in whatever capacity he is called, and believes “It’s because of the relationships that we develop while working with and serving others that the ministry of diaconate is so rewarding.” Community is the most important thing that was emphasized for him in the diaconate formation program. “It’s in Community that we encounter Christ. It’s in Community that we can most readily love God and others. It’s through Community that we often find our strength and our faith.”

Gunmen kill activist couple who worked for church in the Philippines QUEZON CITY, Philippines (CNS) — Gunmen on a motorcycle killed two activists and journalists who worked for the church in the Philippines, said the director of Kidapawan Diocese’s program for tribal Filipinos, a sector the slain couple had served. Father Peter Geremia, who is also a member of the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions, said George and Maricel Vigo had just left his house June 19 when assassins shot them in the Singao community of Kidapawan City. “They were on the way home on a motorcycle George was driving, when another motorcycle overtook them and blocked their way,� Father Geremia said. The priest spoke with UCA News, an Asian church news agency based in Thailand, after attending to the couple’s bodies, their orphaned four children and Maricel’s grieving mother. “They (George and Maricel) fell when a shooter wearing a helmet hit George. When Maricel got up, the man shot her,
too,� he said. George “died on the spot,� and Maricel died at Kidapawan Doctors Hospital, the priest added. Father Geremia described the victims as “moderate activists� who fought for human rights, environmental and other social issues, and who served indigenous people, Muslims and other residents affected by clashes between armed factions. Both activists hosted radio programs related to their work that were aired over the Notre Dame Broadcasting Corporation. Before shifting to full-time advocacy work, they contributed occasional articles to UCA News. The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines reported the couple as the seventh and eighth journalists killed in the country since January. The priest said George had worked with the diocese’s tribal Filipino program and the couple “was active� with Apo Sandawa Task Force, a nongovernmental environmental consortium.

Sister Virginia Marie Straight, SNDdeN Sister Virginia Marie Straight, a Sister of Notre Dame for 77 years, died June 7, 2006 at the age of 98. For sixty years she taught in Notre Dame elementary and high schools throughout California and at College of Notre Dame (now Notre Dame de Namur University). Her specialties were music and Spanish. She taught at Mission Dolores Elementary School and Notre Dame High School in San Francisco, as well as Our Lady of Mount Carmel Elementary in Redwood City, Notre Dame Elementary and Notre Dame High School in Belmont. A talented musician who could play all the instruments, she loved teaching others to play; she even taught conducting. She could organize everything from a drum corps for little children to a string ensemble for college students. Notre Dame Sister Paula Butier recalled how Sister Virginia Marie was very quiet and unassuming and one might never realize what a musical genius she was. Recalling their mutual love of writing and sharing poetry, grandniece RenĂŠe Bayard remembers Sister Virginia Marie as
“probably one of the most beautiful people I have ever known. She had such a beautiful spirit.� Known as “Marie� or “Aunt Marie� to her family, she was very devoted to her six brothers and sisters and her many nieces and nephews and their children. In recognition of her care for and influence on her family, generations of her nieces are named in her honor. Her Sisters in community remember her as a wonderful teacher and very dear friend. “She was the sweetest, most gracious person and very strong at the same time,� said Sister Phyllis D’Anna. Besides her Sisters in Notre Dame and her large family, Sister Virginia Marie will be missed by her caregivers at Mercy Retirement and Care Center in Oakland where she lived for the past eight years. A memorial Mass was celebrated on June 12 at Notre Dame Province Center in Belmont and was followed by burial at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, 1520 Ralston Avenue, Belmont, CA 94002.

On June 19, Father Geremia heard a report over the Oblates’ radio station that the Vigos had been killed. “I could not believe the news,� the priest said, recalling the Vigos’ two-hour visit with him. “They were so happy when they left because I looked well,� Father Geremia told UCA News. “They did not show any sign of worry or being threatened.� In 1997, when many Mindanao communities faced violence, environmental destruction, poverty, kidnappings for ransom, the harassment of journalists and corruption in media, the Vigos and 14 other journalists organized the Federation of Reporters for Empowerment and Equality to advocate for peace and development in the region.

More than 250 people attended a retreat May 21 in Redwood City. The retreat was held in preparation for the May 27-28 Hispanic Charismatic Congress.
A BIG THANKS TO OUR GOD FOR HIS WONDROUS DEEDS! The Hispanic Charismatic Movement of the Archdiocese of San Francisco held a series of events recently to celebrate the wonders of the Lord: ● More than 250 people from the Archdiocese of San Francisco, the Diocese of Oakland and Diocese of San Jose gathered May 21 in Redwood City for a retreat in preparation for a Charismatic Congress. All the people who attended this retreat later served at the Congress and it was a wonderful experience with a strong sense of unity among all. ● The Congress itself was held May 27-28 at Sequoia High School in Redwood City. It was a tremendous success. The venue was packed with many more participants than last year’s event. It was a great spiritual event. The fire of the Holy Spirit was undoubtedly present these two days. It was one of the Congresses that I have enjoyed the most. We were fortunate to have many priests and there were long lines for confessions through both days of the Congress. All the priests and lay speakers made good remarks about the Congress and the desire of participants for Confession. We had the honor and privilege of hosting Archbishop George H. Niederauer who delivered a wonderful Pentecost message. He looked very excited to see the crowd giving up their weekend to attend the Congress. The Archbishop said he enjoyed his visit to the Congress and hoped to be invited to other events. He was so excited that he locked his keys in his car and roadside assistance had to be called in to let him back in the car. Thank you Archbishop for your visit! ● On May 27, there was a Charismatic Mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Daly City. ● On June 3, there were services for the Vigil of Pentecost at St. Anthony’s Parish in Redwood City. It began at 7:00 p.m. and as always the crowd was overflowing. The parish has had Charismatic Masses for the past six years and attendance is always around 1,200. I was very joyful and surprised to see the church so full. The excitement of God’s Presence among his people was very much present at services for the Vigil of Pentecost which lasted till Midnight and included the celebration of Holy Mass ● Charismatic celebrations and services for the Vigil of Pentecost were also held at St. Veronica’s parish in South San Francisco, Holy Angels in Colma, Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Daly City, St. Raphael in San Rafael and other parishes. Aggression against human life The following was adapted from a June 18 commentary in the Spanish language newspaper, La Opinion, by Cardinal Roger Mahony of Los Angeles. Today I’d like to turn your attention to a very important moral subject: the campaign, now under way, by certain members of the legislature to legalize assisted suicide in California. This radically permissive form of public policy represents a very serious threat against our brothers and sisters, against those who are ill, vulnerable and, especially, against those who are poor, elderly, disabled and minorities — those who often lack access to medical care. Legalized assisted suicide would undermine the common good. Those who are in favor of assisted suicide insist on slogans like “this is my body, my death, my option … I ought to have the freedom to choose assisted suicide when confronting an incurable or terminal disease.” Why would society deny this freedom to a terminally ill patient? Why is it wrong to authorize the exercise of free will? Are those opposed to assisted suicide intransigent, holding obstinate religious beliefs? Absolutely not. Our opposition is rooted in a particular understanding of personal and social responsibility. The American culture values highly personal freedom and the right to privacy, and therefore those who support assisted suicide in California have carefully masked the issue under the guise of personal freedom. But using this narrow perspective to approach the subject is deficient and dangerous. A blind compromise with personal liberty hinders the ability to see other equally important values, such as the social character of the individual and our mutual dependence. Alluding to personal liberty, supporters of assisted suicide carelessly omit the notion of the common good. The public debate over assisted suicide should encompass more than a mere cultural compromise to individual choice and self-determination. Other important principles such as social justice, equality and human dignity cannot be ignored. The common good should be paramount. Absolute freedom does not exist! When personal autonomy is overly emphasized we lose sight of other fundamental principles guiding the pragmatic application of our liberty. When we claim the absolute right to practice assisted suicide, a few individuals expose the rest of humanity to grave harms, especially those whose freedom to act independently is endangered as a result of poverty, incapacity or lack of access to basic health care. We are expecting our doctors to cross the line from being health providers to become accomplices ready to assist in suicides. This compromises their medical role of procuring advances towards pain management and treatment of depression. We cannot tolerate public policies that celebrate individualistic ethics, but which undermine human dignity and threaten to perpetuate social discrimination, undercut the relationship between patients and doctors, and at the same time detract from those alternatives whose goal is to improve, not end, human life.
Serving in harm’s way
The Church of Love After my trip to Rome for the Consistory of Cardinal Levada, a parishioner complained to me about the “waste” of money by the Church on fancy lunches, dinners, vestments and liturgies when there are so many poor people who need spiritual and financial aid. This caused me to reflect on all that the Church is doing and has done throughout history to help the sick and the poor. As Catholics, we have been commanded by the founder of our Church, Our Lord Jesus, to be a community of Love. For 2,000 years we have been attacked from within and especially from without. However, we have continued to grow and our charitable activities around the world continue to grow as well. We are the largest dispensers of unconditional charity the world has ever seen. One does not need to be a Catholic to receive our many free services. If we are truly God’s Church, it has to be this way. No other institution or government comes close to doing what we do in pure charity. In my opinion this is one of our most important credentials as the True Church. The lunches and dinners in Rome were not paid for by the Church. Various tour groups, the participants themselves and an organization of lay Catholics, whose mission is the Defense of the Faith and helping the sick and the poor, paid for them. They bring many poor and seriously ill children and adults to Lourdes every year and give millions to charities worldwide, focusing on the sick and the poor. Deuteronomy in the Old Testament is the source for our vestments. Every Priest I know bought his own. Many are made by nuns who need the income to support their community. Some are very beautiful and costly. Most of mine were gifts by family and friends. At Mass we are in the presence of Our God. Beautiful vestments add respect for Our Lord’s presence. They can never be too beautiful under the circumstances. God is Glorified here and not the clergy. The roots of our Mass go back almost 4,000 years. The first part, the Liturgy of the Word, is patterned after what we know of the worship by the Hebrews at least 3,800 years ago. The Liturgy of the Eucharist with the Consecration and the Sacrifice of the Body and Blood of Our Lord goes back to the last supper and Calvary 2,000 years ago and ancient Hebrew worship also. Vatican II states that the Eucharist is the center and source of our Faith and the very summit of our Faith. Anyone who does not believe that Jesus is present in the Bread and Wine is by definition not a Catholic. This has been true since the Last Supper. At the time of the Reformation Protestants also believed this. The Church exists both in Heaven and on Earth. On earth we are a group of humans with all of humanity’s frailties. We expect more of our clergy and religious than others because of their devotion to the Church. In spite of the failings of some, we should be proud to be Catholics and of all the good the
Old translation anew Many years ago (I believe in the mid1960’s) I used the St. Andrew’s Bible Missal. Though my memory is not the greatest, I think I remember the first translations from Latin to English when the Mass was permitted in the vernacular by the Second Vatican Council. I do remember “through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault.” I do remember “and with your spirit.” I do remember “Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof.” This week, the Bishops voted to approve a “new” Mass translation at their meeting in Los Angeles. Many of us keep hoping and believing that the Church will always be attuned and responsive to the promptings of the Holy Spirit, especially when it concerns the communal worship of the People of God. I am 57 years old and ordained as a priest for almost 24 years. If the Vatican ultimately approves, the Church will be using English Mass texts that are 40 years old. The three-year long war in Iraq, which has claimed more then 2,500 American lives and brought death to many thousands of Iraqis, is a dangerous place for military chaplains. Yet their willingness to serve in harm’s way is essential and appreciated by the men and women in the armed forces. He and other chaplains agree that the looming mortality and the absence of distractions in Iraq call for spiritual counseling, which has led some soldiers to rekindle their Catholicism and others to join the faith.

Laughing to the bank
This is in response to the letter from Richard LemMon in the June 9 Catholic San Francisco. Christ is not the Church and the Church is not Christ. The Church is how Catholics choose to live our life in Christ. Sometimes we do this well and sometimes we do it poorly. Our lack of faith, hope, love, forgiveness, etc. does not change Christ. As for the Da Vinci Code, I do not understand why so many people are spending so much time, energy and money discussing the flaws of a work of fiction. ‘Da Vinci Code’ obsession I have always looked forward to arrival of Catholic San Francisco. Lately, I have been looking forward to the fact that you are going on Summer Schedule. It is my hope that, when you return to your regular schedule, you will have gotten the help you need to get over your “Da Vinci Code” obsession. Come on, it was a good piece of fiction and a compelling fictional movie. Perhaps an article emphasizing the fictional nature of the work would have been appropriate. But, your unending crusade has been over the top. Please get over it and get on to more important issues. I would urge you to follow the example of Fr. But that’s not what he did and his disclaimer is, to my mind, deliberately ambiguous and self-serving for his thesis.”

Democrats need to oppose assisted suicide By Laura Remson Mitchel For social and pro-life religious conservatives, it’s relatively easy to oppose legislation like AB 651 (Berg-Levine), which would make it legal for physicians to prescribe lethal medication to patients that are expected to die within six months. For Democrats, especially those who consider themselves liberal or progressive, however, the idea can seem very attractive. Democrats generally support autonomy, and we definitely need to improve end-of-life care. But AB 651 isn’t the answer. A close look at the facts in a real-world context should convince Democrats to oppose legalization of physician assisted suicide. For one thing, we don’t need this bill. Current law already allows individuals to refuse unwanted treatment and to obtain aggressive management for intractable pain. It also allows individuals who want to die to end their own lives. (For many of us in the disability community, the concern isn’t that doctors or hospitals won’t let patients reject treatment. It’s that futile care committees increasingly refuse to authorize the medically appropriate care the patient wants.) Suicide isn’t pretty or pleasant, but since when do Democrats believe in making it easier for desperate people to die than to live? We certainly don’t apply that standard to the
poor or to ethnic- or racial-minority groups or to disaster victims. We support intervention when younger, non-disabled people become suicidal. But when someone has a terminal illness or a severe disability or a debilitating chronic illness, far too many simply assume that suicide is a rational response. Research indicates that views on this subject vary by ethnic group, gender and race, with the greatest support coming from white males. A recent study of Latino views by the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) showed that 64 percent oppose assisted suicide. Experts say that depression and hopelessness are the most consistent risk factors for suicide, and the inability to get needed health care and social support services certainly can result in such feelings. Democrats may fight to increase access to these services, but that’s no guarantee of success. Publicly funded health- and human-services programs that are critically important to the most vulnerable Californians are under attack at both the federal and state levels. In the private sector, employers are cutting back on health coverage and shifting more costs to employees. Meanwhile, the Bush administration is pushing for health-savings accounts and other private-market approaches to health care that will exclude people with serious health problems and disabilities, either directly or indirectly.
Supporters of assisted suicide say that AB 651, like Oregon’s “Death with Dignity Act,” applies only to patients with less than six months to live. But legalized assisted suicide would reinforce the worst financial incentives in our health-care system, including barriers to necessary care. Inadequate health and support services can easily transform a manageable chronic condition into a terminal one. And according to the New York State Task Force on Life and the Law, a nonpartisan government-advisory group: No matter how carefully any guidelines are framed, assisted suicide and euthanasia will be practiced through the prism of social inequality and bias that characterizes the delivery of services in all segments of our society, including health care.” Given all these inequities, biases and risks, it’s hard for me to understand why so many of my fellow Democrats fail to see the danger that legalizing assisted suicide poses to the health-care system, to all who use it and to virtually every constituency that the party has cared about for more than half a century. The Catholic Difference The recent decision by China’s government-sponsored Patriotic Catholic Association [PCA] to ordain and install bishops whose nominations had not been approved by the Pope has, according to press reports, put the possibility of diplomatic relations between the Vatican and Beijing into the deep freeze. Why, though, did anyone think a real thaw was underway in the first place? Perhaps this misperception was due in part to some wishful thinking (and subsequent leaking) on the part of senior Vatican officials, who regard full diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China as, primo, a good thing in itself and, secondo, the key to seizing the opportunities for evangelization that will be available when China opens itself fully to the world. Both propositions are questionable. Under current circumstances, establishing full diplomatic relations with the PRC means transferring the Holy See embassy to Beijing from Taiwan - which just happens to be home to the first Chinese democracy in five millennia. What would such a move do to the Catholic Church’s hard-earned (and welldeserved) reputation as the premier moral force behind the contemporary human rights revolution? And what would such a potential dent in the Church’s image (whether fair or unfair) do to the Church’s prospects in a future Chinese free market of religions, into which evangelical Protestants, Mormons, and others who won’t bear the burden of entanglement with the communist regime will eventually flood? Is Pope Benedict XVI taking a harder line on China than his predecessor? That’s another media misperception, and it’s
rooted, I expect, in historical myopia. In 1870, Holland, Belgium, Great Britain, the United States, Canada, Australia, and certain missionary territories were the only places in the world where the Church could appoint bishops without interference from (or, as the euphemism had it, the “cooperation” of) the state. For the past 125 years, recovering the libertas ecclesiae, the Church’s freedom to order its internal life without state interference, has been a prime concern of Vatican diplomacy. Different accommodations have had to be made at different times, but the Church has never conceded to the state a right-of-appointment of bishops that is independent of the papacy. Perhaps an accommodation of a sort could be offered to the present regime in Beijing - but its acceptance seems unlikely, given the regime’s manifest determination to keep what it regards as the genie of religious freedom firmly corked in a state-sealed bottle. That determination, not any “hardening” on the part of Benedict XVI, is the heart of the matter today, as it was during the pontificate of John Paul II. And until that changes, nothing dramatic is possible. Some light was cast on the complexity of all this during a recent conversation I had with one of China’s most prominent Catholic laymen (who, for reasons of prudence, must remain anonymous). He confirmed that there had been a significant grassroots rapprochement between members of the PCA and members of the underground Church, as he confirmed that many PCA bishops had made submissions to Rome and now prayed publicly for, and in communion with, the Pope. This reconciliation, which was part of John Paul
II’s China strategy, is detested by the Chinese regime; the recent episcopal ordinations and installations, which took place under duress, were in part an effort to reinsert wedges between PCA George Weigel Catholics and underground Catholics. My interlocutor made two other important points. First, in his view (which he believes Pope Benedict shares), no deal with the Beijing regime is better than a bad deal - and a bad deal, in these circumstances, means a deal in which the government’s role in the appointment of bishops is unacceptably intrusive. Second, and despite the regime’s ritual rants about Christianity-andcolonialism, Catholicism is immensely attractive in China because the Chinese people associate Christianity with modernization, with a more decent society, and with a better way of life. All of which prompts the thought that a Vatican that “thinks in centuries” can well afford to bide its time in dealing with a regime that is only fifty-seven years old - a regime that, on my friend’s analysis, may unravel in the next decade or two. The sacredness of work When I was in High School we read an old German classic entitled, Immensee. It told the story of a love that never happened, but that should have, except that the tragic hero of our story was never able to express his love to the woman he loved. So he ended up alone, with an aching heart, full of regrets. The book ends with him reminiscing about the woman’s last words to him. When they parted, years back, she’d said to him: “I know you’ll never come back!” He hadn’t realized then how prophetic those words would be. Now, recalling them, he is overcome with regret and his life feels empty. He’s deeply sad, but, after luxuriating in that melancholy for a while, we are told, he went to his desk and, despite nursing a great heartache, he began again “to work with all the vigour of his youth.” Thank God for work, sometimes that’s the only thing that sits between us and unbearable melancholy. Work is a wonderful, God-given, thing. We lack a good theology of work. Too often work is seen as something that takes us away from the God and prayer, a distraction to the spiritual life. Hard work is admitted to be a good, honest thing, but, even so, never a holy thing in itself, a gift from God so that we can be co-creators with Him. In fact, in some theologies, work is seen as a punishment for sin, something introduced on the planet after Adam’s sin, not willed or intended by God ideally.
In this view, except for sin, there would be no work. Some of this, of course, is true. Work can be a distraction and an escape (both from God and family). It can be a rationalization against entering into the deeper things. As well, we too easily take our self-worth from our work so that we feel good about ourselves only when we are achieving something and are anxious always that, deep down, outside of our work and our achievements, we have little to offer. And so we work to try to prove ourselves and our work often becomes cancerous, something we can’t quit doing because our entire sense of self-worth is tied up with it. There are real dangers in work. But there are dangers in everything. Work can be an excuse to avoid the deeper things, but it is also the deep, natural form of contemplation that God gives to us as humans. We have to spend most of our waking lives working. That should tell us something, namely, that work must be the major avenue through which God wants us to journey towards the deeper things. Given the way we are built and the way life is shaped, God surely does not expect us to consciously think about Him most of our waking moments. God is not an egoistical tyrant, demanding our conscious attention, even while we are have to work long hours amidst all the heartaches, headaches, restlessness, anxieties, fears, and preoccupations that impale themselves upon us every waking minute. If God wants our con-
scious attention every waking minute, than there is some fatal flaw in the way we are built and the way life is set up. But there is no fatal flaw. God is the ground of our being, the ground too of our work and our relaFather tionships. In God “we live Ron Rolheiser and move and have our being.” We know God not just in our conscious awareness and in prayer, but also in a deep inchoate way, by participating with Him in building this world - by growing things, building things, carving things, creating things, cleaning things, painting things, writing things, raising children, nursing bodies, teaching others, consoling others, humouring others, struggling with others, and loving others. Work, like prayer, is a privileged way to get to know God because, when we work, we are toiling in partnership with Him. Jesus knew well both the feel of work and of tiredness. With Jesus through the storms of life St Mark’s words might express the feelings of many people of shaky faith or none. When the storms of life rage overhead, people often can’t keep themselves from a word of protest: Where is God when I need him most? After all, God is supposed to be at the helm of the ship. That’s God’s job. Instead, he sometimes seems comfortably sheltered from the maelstrom of human concerns. Perhaps he’s just dozing. His captaincy sometimes seems hidden from view. The disciples ask Jesus, Do you not care? Lots of people in our day ask God the same question. Is it any wonder? A captain at rest while his ship is going down would shake anyone’s confidence. Most of us are probably too far removed form the perils of the sea to enter easily into the fear expressed by the disciples. These days the storms of life confront us in different ways. Concern about a sick or dying friend, worries about keeping our jobs and supporting our families, anxiety that we’ll just be taken for granted, fear that we’ll be left alone, that those whom we love will turn out unfaithful. Sensitivity to wider world issues only adds to the storms that hover threateningly over human lives: governments that appear unable to tell the truth, wars that cease only to be continued by other means, racial or religious strife that rises, an environment that groans, people everywhere suffering and going without. In such stormy conditions, even very faithful believers might want to lodge a protest with God: Do you not care? We are going down! The psalmist more than once did just that: Rouse thyself! Why sleepest thou, O Lord. Awake! Do not cast us off forever (44:23). We’re not told whether he too received a rebuke from the Lord. But it’s not the psalmist’s lack of faith that motivates this wake-up call to God. On the contrary, it is because he has a sure confidence that the Lord alone can help him that he calls upon him. The disciples had to learn who Jesus was, who this one was whom ‘even the wind and sea obey’. The Christian believer is not without the same need to learn. So what’s lacking if, in our fear, we sometimes feel like God doesn’t care? Perhaps it comes down to the question
of what we really want from God. Or better, what God really wants most to give us. Most believers will readily admit that Jesus shows tremendous care for his people. God cares. Just after this scene in Mark’s Gospel we see him casting out demons, healing a woman who has been in pain for twelve years, raising Jairus’s daughter to life. He has already gained notoriety for insisting that the law should serve people, not enslave them, for promising freedom to prisoners, for defending the widow and the orphan. This is not a man, nor a God, who remains aloof from the human condition. After all, he too is in the storm-tossed boat with his disciples! There’s always, though, something more to his mission than sheer activism. It’s his complete and entire confidence in God the Father. This is perhaps no more beautifully portrayed in the Gospels than in the image we have today of a man of such confidence that in the midst of the storms of life he is able to lay a tired head on a cushion and fall asleep. When the storms of life rage all round us, which one of us would be so heartless as to deny a child of God that rest which alone comes with complete childlike confidence? That’s what God wants to give us. Of course God cares. Jesus stirs himself from his slumbers, rebukes the wind, and silences the sea. His little boat and its scared passengers reach the other side safely. There remains but the unhappy memory of another failure in faith on the part of the disciples.The wind and the sea receive from the once sleeping Lord a mild rebuke by comparison with the one he saves for his closest followers: Why are you so frightened? How is it that you have no faith? It must have been little consolation to them that they made it through the storm. ‘We failed the test but at least we survived shipwreck.’ Christian faith is about much more than surviving shipwreck through the storms of life. Christian Prayer and the Christian God: What difference does the Trinity make? By Margaret M. Turek As Christians we believe in one God: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The doctrine and worship of God in three persons distinguishes Christianity from all other religions as well as from every sort of philosophical mysticism. Yet most of us Christians would be hard pressed to say something meaningful about the difference it makes that the one God is a trinity of persons. This is particularly disappointing given that nearly 40 years have passed since Karl Rahner, arguably the most influential Catholic theologian of the last century, criticized Christians for being “in their practical life, almost mere ‘monotheists’.” To his mind, it was imperative that Christianity, in its teaching and practice, “situate Christian piety in more explicit and vital connection with trinitarian doctrine.” Rahner was not alone. Among his contemporaries who shared this concern and took up this task was Hans Urs von Balthasar, a Swiss Catholic theologian whose influence appears to be on the rise (partly due to the endorsement of Pope John Paul II, who held him in the highest esteem). Balthasar, whose theological work as a whole was imbued with a contemplative spirit, devoted two books to the subject of Christian prayer: the longer Prayer (1955) and the shorter Christian Meditation (1984). The outstanding merit of these two works lies precisely in Balthasar’s effort to situate the nature and practice of Christian prayer “in more explicit and vital connection with” the mystery of the Trinity. In these two books, Balthasar not only examined the distinctive features of Christian prayer, but also explored the more wide-reaching question as to whether the Trinity makes any difference to the human race in its yearning and searching for God. Balthasar tackled the latter issue by inquiring, in the first place, “whether God has spoken to the human race.” If God has not spoken to the human race, it is understandable that human beings would take the initiative in forging pathways to God. Prompted by a natural religious desire, human beings would inevitably devise techniques of meditation by which to ascend to the heavens. Not only that, but lacking an awareness of being addressed by God, human beings would be justified in inventing forms of meditation in accordance with a notion of God as the Absolute Silence or as the Wordless Void, that to which we are related as the primordial source from which we come and as the goal of our deepest aspirations, but
which cannot relate to us in a personal manner. Indeed if God has not spoken to the human race, there is good reason to conclude that to be divine is to be detached from inter-personal communication. What this would mean for anyone who strives to arrive at union with the divine is that one can expect a de-personalizing absorption into the impersonal Absolute, or something along the lines of an extinguishing of one’s personal existence rather like the blowing out of a flame. If, on the other hand, God has spoken to the human race – which is the claim of the biblical religions – then both our access to God (via prayer and meditation) and our doctrine of God will be different. In that case, meditation involves something more than attending to the inner promptings and “lights” of our nature. It entails listening to the word of God that comes to us as a “grace,” as a “new” gift to be distinguished from the “first” gift of our creaturely nature. Indeed the word of God that is the focal point of meditation is a gracious word, a word God speaks in freedom. As such, it eludes our manipulation and control and therefore cannot be mastered by any meditative technique. Nonetheless, this very word that cannot be coerced is delivered over to our judgment and decision; it is a free word addressed to our personal freedom. God’s word calls for an answer; it seeks from us an obediential response. Hence it is a word that, in issuing from God, establishes creatures in a dialogical relationship with God. This is of decisive importance and should never cease to astound us: the God of the Bible turns toward creatures and expresses himself as an “I” who says “you.” To be sure, since creatures as such are incommensurate with the Creator, God “descends” from the depths of the eternal and absolute to admit creatures into the sphere of his wisdom and love. It is God’s self-surrender to the creature that makes possible and engenders the creature’s answering self-surrender. It is God who discloses and gives himself to us, and in doing so, enables us to give ourselves reciprocally. Certainly, to acknowledge the primacy of God’s role in meditation is not to regard as simply counterfeit the aspiration of the creature to (somehow) attain to God. God’s primacy in prayer does not render spurious or pointless the longing that propels the human heart to seek after him. There is a God-given purpose to such longing; it is meant to be purified and transformed in the knowledge that (as Balthasar put it) “God alone, in his free and graciously condescending love, can still this yearning. The
creature’s yearning cannot be a will to power that would seize possession of God but rather a will to surrender, to let oneself be seized by him.” This yearning is in keeping with God, then, insofar as it takes shape (first) as receptivity to God’s “movement of condescension” and (secondly) as the ensuing determination to imitate God’s handing over of himself in love. Now if the God of biblical history initiates a dialogical relationship with creatures and by this manner of communication authentically reveals himself, what does this indicate about God’s inmost being? If God shows himself capable of turning toward human beings as an “I” who says “you,” and thereby expresses the integrity of his eternally perfect and absolute nature (for we realize it is God who acts thus), what in God is the basis for this, the ground of this? Does this not intimate that inter-personal communication is proper to being God? The Christian answer to these questions is elaborated in the doctrine of the Trinity. Balthasar for his part, aiming to shed light on the Trinity as the inner-divine foundation of Christian prayer, developed an understanding of the Christian God as an infinite and eternal intercourse of love between the Father and the Son in the Holy Spirit. The Father’s way of being God is a pure initiatory self-communication. Yet this perfect and unlimited self-communication is not one-way, but the eternal generating source of a divine dialogue. For what the Father generates by his self-communication is precisely the equally boundless answer that is the divine Son. Indeed, the eternal dialogue between the Father and the Son is inconceivably perfect such that this changeless exchange yields the Holy Spirit of divine fellowship. The Holy Spirit in God attests to the fact that the personal otherness of the Son vis-à-vis the Father is not annulled or extinguished but maintained and transcended in a perfect communion of love. For on the one hand, the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of the Father and the Spirit of the Son – the Spirit who sustains personal uniqueness and distinction, “the one who is between them.” And on the other hand, the Holy Spirit is “a Someone of his own”: the singular fruit of mutual love, the one in whom the communion of two is complete. Since it is entirely good and positive that personal otherness exists in God, by virtue of which the divine life consists in reciprocal self-giving, we find here valid grounds for venturing an explanation as to how God can (in freedom) address the TRINITY, page 19

Atonement for sexual abuse Boston’s Cardinal Sean P. O’Malley led a nine day series of Masses and other services during the traditional novena before Pentecost. Concluding on the feast of Pentecost, this “pilgrimage of repentance and hope” acknowledged the sexual abuse of minors by clergy in the Archdiocese of Boston. The services took place in parishes that were served by priests accused or convicted of sexual abuse of minors. With the celebration of the Eucharist, the series began at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross. Cardinal O’Malley and more than twenty priests prostrated themselves on the altar for ten minutes as a litany of repentance was read. The litany contained thirty intentions begging for forgiveness for “sins of your priests” and “harm brought to your church.” The Cardinal expressed sorrow for the many victims of clergy sexual abuse who had hidden their abuse for long periods of time. He said that their pain was also the pain of the church and “the sexual abuse of children is for us the wounds on the body of Christ.” At each service a person abused by a priest, or his/her relative, spoke. At the opening service, such a person emotionally exclaimed that “the survivor community is suffering.” The local group of SNAP (Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests) protested at every service. They argued that “dirty hands don’t heal,” the Cardinal is “papering over the problem,” and “it’s too little too late.” SNAP demands “more tangible steps” such as releasing the names of all priests accused of sexual abuse of minors, and legislation eliminating the statute of limitations on abuse crimes. Dioceses throughout the country have taken several steps in addressing the problem of clergy sexual abuse. These responses include sincere apologies to victims and their families, public and private meetings between bishops and victims, payment for therapy, financial resolutions. Some abused persons have actually met with their priest abuser. Seminaries have re-examined policies for entrance and ongoing evaluation in terms of sexuality, personal maturity, and tendencies toward sexual disorders. The Vatican’s Congregation for Catholic Education visited all U.S. seminaries to examine these and other policies. The sexual scandal has focused on other concerns as well, for example, priest reassignment after credible accusations,
credibility of some bishops, the relationship between bishops and priests, accountability to and the role of the laity, nationally mandated norms for protecting children and innocent persons from sexual abuse. There is no question that “the survivor community is suffering.” There is likewise no question that the church is seeking and finding credible ways to assure that this kind of suffering will never occur again. There is another group of persons in this scandal who are also suffering. Many of them feel abandoned and without hope. This group comprises the accused priests themselves. The pain is especially acute for those with accusations that have not yet been resolved through months and years of legal processes. When the bishops of the United States voted for a zero tolerance policy as a way of addressing this catastrophic problem, every priest accused or convicted of sexual abuse of a minor was and is treated the same. This policy has generally been well-received by the public as it is a credible way of protecting children from predatory priests. The “down side” of the policy is that it does not deal adequately with difference, for example, among a priest with a credible accusation, a priest who abused once, a priest who entrapped and preyed on children. The Boston “pilgrimage of repentance and hope” understandably and rightly seeks “atonement” for sexual abuse. The word itself means to “make one.” Atonement is the way reconciliation is effected. God and humanity were reconciled and made to be at one (see 2 Cor. 5:19) by the eminent atonement of Jesus. This divine reconciliation was brought about by the Incarnation of Jesus, and by his life, sufferings, death and resurrection. This Atonement is the biblical and theological starting point. Herein all persons are indeed at one. To atone is, then, to make amends for an offense or injury. The restoration of fallen humanity was the work of God’s free and benevolent mercy. The perpetual priesthood of Jesus in heaven is a constant reminder of the present and living reality of atonement Atonement is the work of love. By his perfect love, Jesus was obedient to death. He laid down his life for his friends. By this example, Jesus drew all things to himself “making peace through the blood of his cross.”
By imitating God’s mercy, members of the church have the moral responsibility to extend to victims of clergy sexual abuse atonement in acts of healing, understanding, and reconciliation. Children must always Father Gerald D. Coleman, S.S. be kept safe. This mercy and benevolence must also be extended to priest sexual abusers of children. They also need atonement by similar acts. Only in this way can the church be healed by carrying on the example of Jesus who drew all persons to himself. This is not an easy step to take. Anger, resentment and hostility often stand in the way. However, this is a necessary step. Gospel values and pastoral responsibility demand this atonement. Predatory and sexually abusive priests must be removed from ministry in the church. While they too can be healed and forgiven, they have badly wounded the church and damaged the necessary credibility between priest and laity. As atonement for their sins and crimes, this removal constitutes public penance. Not all priests who abused were predatory. Not all priests accused of sexually abusing a child committed this crime (see, e.g., the case of Fr. Wiel in the National Catholic Reporter, May 26, 2006, pg. 7). Some authentic type of healing and reconciliation must be extended to these priests. Atonement demands it. This proposal will not be well-received or endorsed by persons and groups who cannot extend forgiveness or do not understand atonement. Jesus forgave from the cross. ‘Cars’ has a full tank of humor Reviewed by David DiCerto NEW YORK (CNS) — Having already set the standard for computer-animated entertainment with movies such as “Toy Story,” “Monsters, Inc.” and “Finding Nemo,” Pixar continues to raise the bar with “Cars”(Disney), a delightful, family-friendly film with a full tank of humor and emotion that is likely to leave its summer competition in the dust. Directed by John Lasseter and Joe Ranft, the tale takes place in a world of anthropomorphic autos, centering on cocky racecar Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson), a rookie hot rod with his headlights set on the prestigious Piston Cup and the fame it will bring. While en route cross-country to compete against two veteran speedsters (voiced by Michael Keaton and real-life racing legend Richard Petty), Lightning is unexpectedly detained in the neglected desert town of Radiator Springs, which, in its heyday, had been the jewel of the Route 66 crown. Though revved up to burn rubber out of town, Lightning, through his growing friendship with its motley four-wheeled residents, has a change of heart about life in the fast lane, learning that “there’s a whole lot more to racing than winning.” A top-shelf cast provides the characters with endearing personalities; they include: Bonnie Hunt as a pretty Porsche; Cheech Marin as a 1959 Impala with flair; Tony Shalhoub as a high-strung Italian Fiat; and George Carlin as a hippie 1960 VW bus who brews his own organic fuel and has a goodnatured running feud with neighbor Sarge, a patriotic World War II jeep. Hollywood icon Paul Newman lends his gravelly muffler to Doc Hudson, an old-timer who guards a big
secret under his vintage hood and who frowns his fender at Lightning’s egotism. But a rusty, dimwitted tow truck with an engine of gold named Mater (voiced by comedian Larry the Cable Guy) steals the show, including a funny scene where, for kicks, he initiates Lightning into the car-equivalent of cow-tipping involving a field of easily spooked tractors. Following past Pixar successes, the writing is sharp, while the vibrant visuals — impressively rendered metallic surfaces, shiny tailfins, high-octane race sequences and lovely painted desertscapes — take a backseat to solid storytelling. Though lacking the epic sweep of “Finding Nemo” and the
character depth of “The Incredibles,” given our hectic world of fast food, express lanes and high-speed Internet access, the film’s gentle message charmingly reminds us that on the highway of life it is important to slow down and appreciate the scenery. If what constitutes God’s inmost being is the inner-trinitarian conversation, God has no inherent need to converse with us. Nor does God’s tri-personal way of being divine render necessary, as a condition of union with him, the extinguishing or the dissolving of our personal being. On the contrary. The word of everlasting love that God speaks to us out of an abyssal freedom proceeds from the inner nature of God himself, ultimately from the self-expressing Father. We can receive and respond to God’s word because God the Father, in addressing us, at the same time offers us his grace. This grace renders us connatural with God by virtue of a co-naissance: a being born of God the Father through, with, and in God the Son. Or what amounts to the same, this grace imparts a participation in the

Hence Christian prayer is always rooted in the “I” of the Son, who unites us with himself through his Incarnation so that we can take part in his dialogue with the Father. The Son by taking on “flesh” for us translates into human terms the very divine Word that he is. Of ourselves, then, we do not have to devise a proper response to God’s loving address, since the prototype of our response is made visible and audible in the whole existence of the Incarnate Word. The Holy Spirit, in turn, enables us to understand and appropriate the Word of God in Christ. By the Spirit we put on the mind of Christ and emit the heartfelt cry “Abba, Father!” Indeed the Spirit is given to “bridge” the inter-personal communication between God and his adopted children, since the Spirit is the bond of unity (between the paternal address and the filial answer) in God himself. Insofar as we are aware of the stupendous mystery that undergirds our life of prayer, we can more readily let ourselves be drawn ever nearer to the Father of grace, assured that union with the God of Jesus Christ is not attained at the cost of our dignity as persons. In fact, called to be “sons in the Son,” we are floor by the bench there are wood shavings, how clean and fine they are, curled like yellow petals. What a beautiful thing work is, seen from this man’s angle! He sits down in the doorway, you with him, you notice the signs of the day’s fatigue, good fatigue that seeps out of one in the evening. He wipes his face, his eyes are a little tired, they have the intensity of eyes that use the last rays of light. Yes, he works hard. He gives good measure.”

“raised to a dignity beyond compare” (Pastoral Constitution Gaudium et spes, n. 22). As Christians, therefore, we ought to be wary of every form of meditation that directs us to leave our personal existence behind in an effort to arrive at union with the wordless abyss, the void in which all distinction is effaced. For after all, as Balthasar remarked, “the Father is not an empty void, not a nirvana, but...the Son’s origin, lovingly affirming him. In the Father there is nothing beyond this eternal Yes to the Son, nothing he keeps to himself and does not share with the Son.… As for the Son, his is the fathomless bliss of being begotten, loved and affirmed” in his personal distinction. Seen from the vantage point of the revelation of the Holy Trinity, meditation of whatever brand which proposes a oneway movement from the world towards the Absolute culminating in the “swallowing up” or “blowing out” of every “I” is misconceived — however admirable the motive and noble the aim. The Principal will maintain and develop a strong academic program, a spiritual community, and be involved in fundraising, advancement, and strategic planning.
Minimum requirements for Notre Dame High School: Bachelor of Arts Degree and California Teaching Credential (preferred) or Master’s Degree

Salary and benefits are competitive. The salary schedule reflects the 2006-07 scale for the San Francisco Archdiocesan High Schools. Degree and Credential preparation should be consistent with the guidelines set forth by the Archdiocese of San Francisco, and the placement upon the scale is dependent upon degrees, qualifications, and experience.
IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
1. Be a practicing Roman Catholic 2. Possess a valid administrative credential and teaching credential 3. Have administrative and teaching experience 4. Excellent oral and communication skills 5. Development and fundraising skills
