Pope urges Group of Eight to put needs of poor at forefront CASTEL GANDOLFO, Italy (CNS) – Pope Benedict XVI urged world leaders from the Group of Eight to put the needs of the poor and weak at the forefront of their discussions. “Speculation and financial turbulence and their perverse effects on food and energy prices” have increased the vulnerability of the world’s poor and disadvantaged, he said after praying the Angelus July 6 with pilgrims gathered in the courtyard of the papal summer residence south of Rome. Our archdiocesan Point7Now! Campaign has raised the awareness of many in the Archdiocese to the plight of the world’s poorest and many people have responded. When we realize we are the same family as these poor, that we belong to each other, then we cannot let their misery go unattended. The pope sends that same message to the most powerful leaders on our planet.” The pope asked world leaders to “courageously adopt all measures necessary to beat the scourge of extreme poverty, hunger, disease (and) illiteracy that still affects a large part of humanity.” The pope appealed to participants to “put the needs of the weakest and poorest at the center of their deliberations.”
