WASHINGTON — At rallies, prayer services and marches held in Washington on the 31st anniversary of the legalization of abortion in the United States, participants were encouraged to continue their fight against abortion. During a Jan. 21 Mass celebrated as part of the National Prayer Vigil for Life, Cardinal William H. Keeler of Baltimore, chairman of the U.S. bishops’ Committee on Pro-Life Activities, urged participants to take to heart Pope John Paul II’s words uttered shortly after his elevation to the papacy: “Be not afraid!” In his homily at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, the cardinal prompted applause from the assembly when he said, “Roe supporters have become the forces of reaction, the forces of entrenched interests; as we see here again tonight, the pro-life movement has become the younger, more vibrant force in this great struggle. “You who are our wonderful young people — young in fact, young in heart — you have taken to heart the words of the Holy Father, ‘Be not afraid.’” PRO-LIFERS, page 9

Members of the local Church of the Archdiocese of San Francisco, which includes the Counties of San Mateo, Marin and San Francisco, often are not aware of the services and support provided to parishes and parishioners by the Archdiocesan Pastoral Center and central administrative office. Ministries, services and support include, for example, parish and school subsidies, marriage and family life programs, hospital chaplains, religious education and youth ministry, deacon programs, clergy education, young adult ministry, vocations, pastoral outreach to prisoners, and administrative expertise in real estate, legal and employee issues. To fund this centralized support for parishes, the Archdiocese has for many years relied upon the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal. With a planning process that involves pastors, the Annual Appeal for 2004 has been set at $5.2 million, an amount that covers most of the cost of pastoral ministries and programs. Launching the 2004 Annual Appeal, a luncheon and ministry fair Jan. 20 at St. Mary’s Cathedral Conference Center was attended by about 350 ANNUAL APPEAL, page 5

Study of clergy sexual abuse of minors due in February Archdiocese of San Francisco reports data and statistics of local Church On Feb. 27, the National Review Board of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops will release a study conducted by the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York. This study, presenting aggregate national statistics, is designed to show the extent of sexual abuse of minors by Catholic clergy in the United States from 1950 through 2002. A narrative report by the National Review Board, discussing the numbers of the John Jay study, will be released at the same time. A longer-term study of the causes and context of clergy sexual abuse in the United States is expected to get under way this spring.

The John Jay College study, commissioned by the National review Board, is based on a comprehensive survey of all Catholic dioceses in the United States regarding child sexual abuse by members of the clergy. It will present for the first time aggregate numbers of clergy sexual abuse in the U.S. Catholic Church. Statistics in the study cover the period from 1950 to 2002. The data and statistics in the John Jay Study are intended to serve as the basis for understanding the scope and extent of the problem of clergy sexual abuse of minors in the U.S. Catholic Church. No other American institution STUDY, page 7 is undertaking this kind of self-study.
