Buttaba History An Awabakal word meaning "the name of a hill on the margin of the lake" (Source: L.E. Threlkeld). Henry F Halloran named his 1920 subdivision Buttaba Hills, the design of which was influenced by the English Garden City Movement. Many of the original streets were named for localities in the UK, a significant number of which share mining and industry in common with Lake Macquarie and adjoining regions. There was a jetty at the Buttaba Hills Estate, located on the western side of Secret Bay, off Wrexham Circlet.

Today The population of Buttaba in 2011 was 947 people in 346 homes with 83.6% of these being owner-occupied. Households in Buttaba are primarily couples with children and are likely to be repaying between $1800 - $2400 per month on mortgage repayments.
