Tips for balancing life and learning include the right preparation and limiting distractions
While some schools Downriver have returned to the classroom and face to face instruction, many have extended their remote learning to the end of the first quarter. As parents and students struggle to find a balance between working from home, learning from home and a separation between these and home itself, there are things to make the school at home day manageable. 1. Get up and get ready for school. This puts yourself in the mindset that you have a job to do, school. If you are rolling out of bed and sitting in front of the computer, you aren’t going to be ready to learn. Set yourself on a schedule, get up, get started, and get finished. Don’t get behind! 2. Make sure you have a dedicated school space. It can be a desk in your room or a table somewhere. It should be well lit, quiet and provide enough room for you to work. Sitting on your bed propped up with pillows is not the best environment to learn and usually results in someone dosing off. 3. Have supplies ready. You don’t want to have to go searching for paper or pencil in the middle of a lesson, you will miss important information. 4. Limit distractions. Keep your mic muted unless you are speaking. There’s nothing more distracting than a bunch of background noise. Televisions and video games should be off and cell phones should be put away. Avoid spinning in your chair and playing with pets, it not only distracts you but others that can see you on the screen. 5. Ask questions. If you miss something, ask them to repeat it. It’s far more difficult to take it all in when you’re looking at a screen rather than at a person in front of you.
Most importantly, ask for help. Don’t struggle or get frustrated, you have resources available to help you, use them! •
