What should I do with my old 401K plan? We’ll help you explore your suitable options
Ask yourself a few questions if you are changing jobs or retiring: Would you benefit from professional advice? Does your 401K plan have adequate investment options to meet your needs? Are you paying attention to notices from your 401K provider? Do you have a risk management process in place for your needs and goals?
Call us today for your complimentary consultation In addition to the significant tax penalties cashing out your 401(k) can result in a serious setback to your retirement savings. Diverting that money away from your retirement savings means that you’ll miss out on the power of compounding. You may need to save a lot more in the future to make up for the compound earnings you might have received if you’d stayed invested. Nicholas J. How have you been motivating yourself in light of the pandemic?
How have you been motivating yourself in light of the pandemic?
How have you been motivating yourself in light of the pandemic?
I’ve stayed motivated during the pandemic by reminding myself that this time of uncertainty, loss, and anxiety, will pass and I still have a future ahead. Knowing that I will get through and still be able to reach my goals is what pushes me through the tough days.
I focused on my work as a freelance photographer. I was used to going out every day photographing new clients but many photoshoots came to a stop as everything happened. In good light, companies, and clients came together to do photoshoots.
Focusing on my goals and adjusting plans to achieve them, allows me to stay excited about the future. I’ve also started a new hobby – learning Spanish – which gives me the satisfaction of small achievements.

As my diary fills up with fun plans for a post-covid world, the sun tries to peep through the clouds, it reminds me that that future has so much to offer: more daylight, a fresh chance to renew relationships, and the loveliest time of the year: Christmas and New Years. And that’s what this Summer 2020 issue is all about, re-opening and fresh starts. We review several healthy living options for our seniors. The virus has affected us personally and we appreciate the extraordinary efforts the businesses we profile have made. Along with prayers, taking the standard precautions recommended by the CDC, and searching out and embracing the businesses and venues that also comply with these safety measures will ultimately allow us all to get back to life as we previously knew it.

Where passion and care live AS THE PANDEMIC SPREAD THROUGHOUT THE U.S. RIVERGATE COMPLEX TOOK PROACTIVE STEPS RE-EMPHASIZING INFECTION CONTROL PROTOCOLS AND RE-EDUCATING STAFF IN USING PPE’S EDIT SUNDRA HILSINGER

ince July 1971, Rivergate Complex in Riverview has been a vital part of the Downriver community. The campus comprises two nursing and rehabilitation centers – Rivergate Health Care Center and Rivergate Terrace. Managed by Life Care Centers of America, Inc., both provide nursing care, long-term care and therapy services (physical, occupational and speech therapies). And both have been seeing the amazing caring spirit of associates continuing
educating staff in using personal protective equipment (such as face masks). Even before the governor’s orders, the facilities were restricting visitors to only end-of-life situations, physicians and needed medical professionals. Sujata Chaddha, executive director at Rivergate Terrace, had just started in her position when cases started being seen in Wayne County. She had previously been a health care consultant in the area and had been impressed with the quality of care she had seen at Rivergate.
THERE’S BEEN A LOT OF SUPPORT FROM OUR COMMUNITY ESPECIALLY OUR HEALTH CARE PARTNERS to care for patients in the time of COVID-19. Nursing homes throughout the world have been hit hard by the pandemic, which takes a higher toll on the senior population and those with existing health conditions. But nowhere else perhaps is true heroism seen as in this setting, and rarely has the bond between patient and caregiver been stronger. As the pandemic spread throughout the United States, Rivergate Complex took proactive steps, re-emphasizing infection control protocols (such as hand washing) and re12

“People know that it’s a quality long-term care facility,” Chaddha said. Despite all the precautions, Rivergate Terrace got its first COVID-19 case. It was a similar situation at Rivergate Health Care Center. “All of a sudden, we had a resident test positive,” said Michelle Peeper, executive director there. “We were trying to stay ahead of it as much as we could.” Residents and staff came down with the coronavirus, and the pandemic took its toll as

LIVING several residents, many of whom had underlying health conditions, passed away. Associates and even fellow residents have been mourning their loss along with their family members, even as the campus continues to care for its residents.
At both buildings, residents who tested positive for COVID-19 were separated from the rest of the resident population. Associates who tested positive stayed home until the CDC guidelines for recovery were met.
Personally, Peeper has seen this as a challenge unlike any she has faced before. “I served in the U.S. Army,” she shared, “and this pandemic has been more difficult.”
Communication has been vital, both with residents and their families and with staff. Daily town hall-style meetings have helped associates stay united and keep up with CDC guidelines updates.

Technology has played a large role in the communication efforts as well. Phone calls and text messages to families and associates have helped keep both informed, and associates have worked with families to set up times for video chats with their loved ones. “We have two iPads and seven Amazon tablets that we are using,” said Chaddha. “We are doing Skype calls, FaceTime and the regular phone calls.” At Rivergate Terrace, associates even put the residents’ room numbers on the outside of their windows so family members could find them easily for window visits. “The residents always felt like we were part of their family, but over the last few months probably this is the only family they have seen,” Chaddha said. “It’s the staff that has been providing that support and love and care to the residents, making them feel that even though their blood families have not been able to come and see them, we are all together in this. I think the bond between the residents and the staff has seen new heights. That is very evident from the fact most of the staff did not try to take time off unless they were sick.” At Rivergate Health Care Center, Peeper shared that associates in all departments have stepped up to do whatever needed. For example, several therapists have not only been providing rehabilitation but also serving in other departments that needed a hand, including on the weekends. A nurse who told Peeper she was scared to work in health care during the pandemic also said she was still going to follow her calling as a nurse and provide care for the patients. “There is such a strong core of passionate people who work for Life Care,” Peeper said. “I couldn’t ask for better.” But even strong teams need support, and Rivergate Complex has benefited from daily communication with Life Care’s corporate clinical leaders and the regional and divisional leaders, as well as tremendous support from the Downriver community itself. “There has been a lot of support from our community, especially our health care partners,” said Chaddha. “Our fire department and police department in this area stopped by several times to drop off PPE.”

LIVING “People have just stopped and dropped things off,” Peeper shared. “The community support means a lot.” At the end of the day, all the efforts have been about the residents, and they also expressed their appreciation. Rick Ines, a resident at Rivergate Terrace for the past two years, said he’s felt cared for throughout the process and hasn’t gotten bored. “They’ve provided me with all kinds of materials for my creative outlet,” Ines said. Fellow resident Robert Cushion, who has called the facility home for three years, shared, “When you’re in the same thing, you float with the boat.” And Lorena Debolt, a resident at Rivergate Health Care Center for six years, shared, “I like living here because everyone is so good to us. From the top to the bottom, the staff are great. They are always cheerful, smiling and willing to do anything for us. I feel the staff is helping me through this time by teaching me how to do things on my own and assisting me in walking better.” Debolt has kept busy sewing, painting, coloring and even decluttering her room. “I miss my family, but I stay in contact with them via phone,” Debolt said. The pandemic is unlike anything America has faced in a long time. But in the darkness, the light of human valor shines clearly, especially at Rivergate. “Nothing has fazed us from providing the care and the love to our residents that we always have been known for,” said Chaddha. “Our staff has done whatever is needed. Many of them have put their own needs on the side, their own family needs on the side, and they have been here to take care of our residents, day in and day out.” Peeper added, “What’s stayed consistent is people’s driving compassion. Even when they’re tired from working lots of shifts, they’re still here. I have learned their passion and willingness to do what needs to be done in these buildings. That is the positive side of this story.” • For more info please contact Rivergate Health Care Center, 734-284-7200, or Rivergate Terrace, 734-284-8000.

HENRY FORD VILLAGE OFFERS SENIORS AMENITIES AND ACTIVITIES THAT EXCITE OR RELAX stationary cruise ship, a college campus without exams, and an adult playground are just some of the ways Henry Ford Village residents describe the senior living community. With plenty of amenities, events, and activities, seniors 62 and over can enjoy as exciting or relaxing a day as they like with the support of enthusiastic staff. Built on the 35-acre family farm and birth site of Henry Ford, HFV was designed with seniors in mind. Conveniences such as the climate-controlled passages connecting every building have a significant impact on everyday life. These passages ensure residents can take a dip in the all-season pool, shop at the convenience store, get pampered at the salon, enjoy a drink at the bar, stop by the full-service bank, and much more without ever going outside. HFV also offers a beautiful chapel that seats 290 people, with several services occurring each week including multiple Protestant services and Catholic mass. And when it’s time to vote, residents may even do so from home as HFV is its own precinct. Apartment styles range from comfortable studios to spacious 2-bedrooms, all with HD cable and Wi-Fi. And with over 40 floor plans, residency is affordable for the middleincome senior. Because HFV is gated, residents have peace of mind when going out for

the day or on extended trips. Seniors who are accustomed to hosting visiting friends and family can still do so as HFV offers reasonably priced accommodations for guests of residents. Shoveling snow, replacing worn-out appliances, and other chores are a thing of the past because HFV offers the comforts of a private residence without the responsibility of maintaining it. The onsite maintenance team is top-notch, responding to requests quickly and efficiently. New apartment homes keep up with the freshest trends. The most recent updates are being done in partnership with students from the design programs of Henry Ford College and Wayne State University. Don and Mata Hoenig, new residents who have the opportunity to update their home, say they enjoy the creativity the students bring. “We love the kids. They’re fabulous!” says Mata Hoenig. Wayne Hindmarsh, sales director at HFV, adds that working with the college design programs assure we bring the latest in architectural and interior design to HFV. Residents also have numerous opportunities to learn new things. With a vast array of cultural enrichment, entertainment, wellness, fitness, recreational, and spiritual programs and activities, something is always happening. sue art, but after moving to HFV, he took up oil painting classes in the art studio and decided he liked it. “That’s one of the truly enjoyable things here,” says Patrick, whose whimsical series “Shoes in My Closet” is widely appreciated, “you learn to experiment and to indulge in a more creative side.” Other creative outlets include a woodshop, gardening, model trains, a television studio, and so much more. Residents are also welcome to join various clubs like the travel club, book club, photography club, Spanish club, and others. For those interested in exercise, there is a state of the art fitness center as well as several classes that encourage activity like Yoga, Tai chi, Zumba, and “Fit Trips” to attractive local places like the Detroit RiverWalk. And according to Adam, if there’s something a resident is interested in that doesn’t exist, it can be created. “There’s nothing we wouldn’t do,” says HFV resident life director, Adam Sterling. One such resident created program are technology courses that help demystify smart devices. These classes are led by resident Liz Chaney, a retired technology instructor who’s traveled the country teaching similar courses. According to Adam, over half of HFV programming is initiated by residents who “bring the expertise and passion for leading them.” The diverse community of unique and talented individuals is also a big draw for prospective residents. People from across the country and wide-ranging walks of life are attracted to HFV. “We looked at a lot of places, but what we liked about this place the most was the diversity,” says Don Hoenig. HFV is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment for all. In fact, they are one of the first senior communities in the state of 20

Michigan to be recognized as LGBT friendly. The staff at HFV are integral to the supportive community. Bruce Blalock, HFV’s Executive Director, who has worked there himself for over 7 years, says, “We have a lot of longevity. Folks here enjoy working with the clientele.” Extending their commitment to the greater community, HFV employs roughly 130 high school and college-aged students as servers in their three restaurants. Over the years, hundreds of student employees have even received scholarships courtesy of the residents. In 2019, nine students joined the ranks and were awarded scholarships. As well, the senior community provides tremendous career opportunities. One young man who started his career at 14-years-old as a server in one of the HFV dining rooms moved up the ranks to become the current director of dining services. When it comes to food, HFV continues to delight. There are three dining venues, including buffet, casual, and an option for more sophisticated evenings. Residents receive 30 meal credits monthly, which provide flexibility throughout the month when dining, and can even be used to treat guests. The food is fresh and delicious; it even won third place in the Detroit Burger Battle at the Eastern Mar-
ket. “The staff really go out of their way,” says Pastor Steve Archer, a resident who’s worked on some of the finest cruise ships, “and they’ll make things that aren’t on the menu if you ask them.” Because HFV is considered a life planning community, residents are never asked to leave due to changes in their health. With a fullservice medical center, assisted living, and memory care onsite, it’s certainly a place one can settle into with peace of mind. Liz Chaney says knowing she’s somewhere she will never have to leave gives her “assurance and comfort.” For anyone on the fence about senior living, residents recommend a visit, and you’ll quickly see that there is no sacrifice to personal lifestyle. In fact, many residents find that they are able to enjoy a more active lifestyle with the freedom to participate in things they already love as well as to discover new pleasures. There is never a better time to move into a caring community that provides the excitement and enrichment everyone deserves. • Henry Ford Village is located in Dearborn at 15101 Ford Rd. A FINAL RESTING PLACE FOR LOVED ONES, FULL OF MEMORIES AND MEMORIALS EDIT AMY GRAMBEAU
DURING A RECENT visit to Michigan
Memorial Park on a sunny Saturday afternoon, I was struck by the delightful sense of community and activity throughout the park. It is this warm and welcoming feeling the management and staff at Michigan Memorial Funeral Home and Park work hard to develop and maintain. We started our tour with the beehives that are populated by over 9,000 honey bees and are expected to produce their first batch of Michigan Memorial Honey this

fall. The hives are maintained by local beekeepers, Dave and Harry Lizyness of Dave’s Honey. Further into the park, we came upon the newest member of the Michigan Memorial family who lives in one of the park’s three lakes, a swan cygnet that proud parents Bella and Bordeaux are celebrating with the whole community. Activities at their other lakes include fishing derbies for kids with disabilities, tables for picnics and kayaking.

“We take great pride in giving back to our community,” says Michigan Memorial Park President, Kelly Dwyer. “We invite everyone to spend time with us in our peaceful setting; we are here for you.” Fifty percent of the park’s 290 acres are situated along the Huron River and we stopped to enjoy the view from the Lighthouse Monument, counted the many turtles and water birds and noticed a few of the 15 bat houses scattered throughout the park. Local Boy Scout Troop #5 made these houses to keep the mosquito population down, and it’s working. Each bat eats from 6,000 to 8,000 mosquitoes every night in the summer.

Michigan Memorial also has a thriving walking club, and we met participants Cindy McCutcheon and Penny Marschner who were enjoying the scenery and weather. Michigan Memorial is a final resting place for those that have passed on. As such, it is full of memories and memorials, so we stopped to appreciate a few of the highlights. Inside the Shrine of Remembrance mausoleum are breathtakingly beautiful stained glass windows and mosaics decorating the circular hallways of this building that was the dream of second-generation park owner, John Heston, and grandfather of current owners Kelly Dwyer and Heidi Unim.
Next, we traveled through the park to the Crucifix Garden, where outdoor Masses are held each year. The Garden of Angels mausoleum is the perfect combination of architectural and natural beauty with reflection pools and plantings throughout. Finally, we rode back to the office at the front gate, and were encouraged to take a book from their Free Little Library and to view the info/images of the recently completed memorial – The Eternal Flame. • Michigan Memorial Park is located in Flat Rock (32163 W Huron River Drive). GAP REALTY GROUP TEAMS WITH MICHIGAN LEGACY CREDIT UNION IN NEW LISTING
hile Michigan Legacy Credit Union’s Flat Rock location moves for a fresh update the same great service and dedication to the community remains. Sometimes after spending years in the same location moving can be extremely difficult. Fortunately for Carma Peters and MLCU moving their Flat Rock
W
branch only requires a literal hop skip and jump to the lot that is directly next to their current location. Yet while the surroundings will remain familiar this move is largely reflective of MLCU’s commitment to stay at the forefront of the financial service industry. “This move allows us to expand upon our new retail branch model which focuses on a new service delivery platform that is encompassed in the entire design of the new branches” said Peters the president/CEO of MLCU. Following the remodel of the Wyandotte MLCU branch construction will begin on the new retail branch model located directly on the corner of Olmstead and Gibraltar Road.
GABRIEL RICHARD AT A GLANCE LISTING INFO Zoned as commercial/industrial, this listing is located at 22588 Gibraltar Rd., Flat Rock, 48134. At 5,980 sq. ft., it was built in 2005. Lot size is 412 X 250.
• Gabriel Richard offers more Advanced Placement/Honors level classes than any other area school (28 total)
• Gabriel Richard is the only school in the area to offer “Our plan is to coordinate the sale of the existing Flat Rock branch with the remodel of the Wyandotte branch so that staff can be moved there during the build of the new Flat Rock location” said Peters. If necessary MLCU may have a trailer on-site so that members may still be served during construction. For Peters achieving this growth while serving the same community was an important aspect. However MLCU’s definition of serving the community isn’t limited to just the financial services they offer. Rather it includes an incredibly diverse history of community events fundraisers and charity work as MLCU has continuously partnered with multiple organizations such as Children’s Hospital of Detroit and the American Cancer Society in order to give back to the communities that their multiple branches serve. “Paying off school lunch fund debts at elementary schools in Wyandotte and Flat Rock was rewarding” said Peters. Plans for Michigan Legacy Credit Union’s future include even more community engagement – with food trucks pop up drive-in movie theater nights and classic car shows as well as technological advancements that will allow members access to most financial services from the convenience of their smartphone. “We’re preparing to survive for generations to come” said Peters.

B2B TRADE NETWORK MAKES IT EASY TO GENERATING NEW BUSINESS CONNECTIONS
M
oney is tight for most people right now and for many businesses the coronavirus pandemic is forcing doors temporarily – or more unfortunately - permanently closed. Of course there are still plenty of needs that have to be met and that’s why so many companies are finding creative ways to save their cash reserves and instead bartering to fill those needs. And a lot of these companies aren’t locating and negotiating these trades on their own but instead turning to companies like TradeFirst to help accommodate the transaction. TradeFirst a business to business trade exchange network based in Oak Park makes it easy for businesses to fill their needs while also generating new business connections in the process. For example restaurants which the pandemic has affected particularly hard can offer gift cards through TradeFirst which helps them ensure that there is still cash flow while their service is reduced to carry out and delivery.
Other businesses that were required to close are finding creative ways to make use of existing trade credit they have accumulated with TradeFirst treating it as a separate savings account. Some business owners are even using them to fulfill personal needs that they may have otherwise paid for in cash. Even businesses that are not as negatively impacted by the pandemic are finding ways to make use of their trade credits such as on advertising to ensure their customers are aware of any changes and remind them that the business remains open. There are a multitude of ways TradeFirst benefits businesses whether it’s exchanging trade dollars for goods or services or facilitating networking between two merchants. TradeFirst isn’t limited to Michigan with over 5,000 members belonging to both large and small companies almost every business need can be met. Some of TradeFirst recognizable members include Atwater Brewery Buddy’s Pizza Sky Zone Nutrition Unlimited and The D Profile magazine.

O
n February 19th, 2020, The Tutoring Center in Southgate celebrated its fifth year of helping students achieve their learning goals. To commemorate the day Amanda Smith director of the TheTutoring Center - Southgate says students were given party bags and play money redeemable at the center’s toy store. Smith also says that it’s very sweet to be able to celebrate the day with some children who have been with the Tutoring Center near its inception.
In the five years the center has been open, 243 students have been helped, and in that time there have been a number of challenges overcome. “We’ve had kids who have gone from barely being able to read to reading above grade level. We’ve had others that struggled in math for years and finally had it click for them,” says Smith. No matter the subject the tutoring center helps bridge the gap between a student struggling and that lightbulb moment of comprehension. The center does this by first removing the pressure to compete with other students in a classroom setting. Next the dedicated instructors strive to find the method the student learns best by - and work one-on-one - with them until they build the confidence they need to succeed in school. The Tutoring Center doesn’t just teach young children. High school students who need a boost with the more difficult math concepts can look to The Tutoring Center as a resource. “The goal has always been to help as many students as we possibly can,” says Smith, adding that she dreams of one day maybe opening a second center. But for the time being all of her focus is on The Tutoring Center - Southgate and looking forward to what the next five years will bring.

GREAT LAKES PHYSICAL MEDICINE AND REHABILITATION ADDS RED LIGHT THERAPY TREATMENT
W
hile increasingly more people are embracing red light therapy (RLT) as a means of improving skin health, leaders within the study of physical medicine are expanding upon the procedure’s usage as an all-natural method of rehabilitation and treating physically-disabling conditions. “The natural metabolic processes enhanced by red light therapy has been proven to reduce the damage caused by oxidative stress,” said Dr. Anne Abrahamson, owner of the Great Lakes Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation practice located at 3247 Biddle Ave. in Wyandotte. Through clinically determined wavelengths of red and near-infrared light, the red light therapy they offer can increase cir-
culation, promote pain reduction and enhance bone recovery, while also providing anti-inflammatory benefits such as muscle relaxation, restoration of motion to joints and relief from muscle spasms and symptoms of arthritis. “For those who do physical training or exercise, red light therapy also allows the body a quicker recovery process,” said Dr. Abrahamson. For those seeking red light therapy, the first visit is always free, and Dr. Abrahamson recommends three 10-minute sessions per week, although various packages are available. “As the only provider in the area with a true 360-degree system, we are able to provide maximum exposure to healing light energy,” said Dr. Abrahamson.

s we slowly come out of ‘stay in place’ to avoid catching and/or spreading the Covid-19 virus people begin to set goals for themselves. Losing the weight they may have gained during the lockdown, getting to the gym (once they open), or just getting into “better shape”. These resolutions require increasing your amount of physical activity. More activity is great for your health energy levels sleep and mood. However ramping up your activity level too quickly after a prolonged period of eating, drinking and inactivity can lead to pain injury and disappointment if your body isn’t ready for it. Your physical therapist (PT) is an expert in human movement and can help you safely reach your fitness goals. People think of PTs as the person to see after an injury but a visit before you change your activity level could prevent injury in the first place. An evaluation by your PT will include assessment of your strength range of motion and functional movement patterns - think jumping, running, squatting, and carrying. Some PTs like us at Orthosport Physical Therapy Center Inc. will dig in even deeper to actual specific mobility of your joints and spine to understand the underlying mechanics guiding your movement patterns. Most common injuries from new fitness routines are caused by underlying weakness, range of motion deficits, or compensatory movement patterns. Your PT will find these during your assessment. They can then prescribe exercises or movements - or if needed provide specific hands-on mobilization - to address the issues found and get you safely moving toward your goals! So stop only thinking of your PT after you’re injured. In this case it’s true that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Seeing your physical therapist before you start on your resolution can keep you on track injury free and help you reach your goals!

REFLECTIONS MEMORIES ARE TIMELESS TREASURES OF THE HEART AND WE BELIEVE THAT THE MEMORY OF YOUR LOVED ONE SHOULD BE COMMEMORATED IN A WAY THAT IS UNIQUE TO THEIR LIFE EDIT / PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED BY MOLNAR FUNERAL HOMES
O
ur legacy began nearly a century ago after John Molnar Sr. immigrated to the United States from Hungary. He was driven by an unwavering work ethic and the need to help families during their greatest time of need. These traits carried on through each generation of the Molnar Family to where we are today. Since 1993 Angela M. Molnar-Ferguson has worked side by side with her father John S. Molnar. Over time we have expanded into the Downriver community and we now operate four facilities within Southgate Brownstown and Wyandotte. Each chapel has been continually updated to ensure comfort elegance and access to modern amenities. Our Southgate and Brownstown Chapels offer spacious library rooms with aquariums that provide a serene place for reflection. The Nixon location is the only funeral home in the community with a formal chapel our Thon Center is designed to host one family at a time in a private setting. We want you to feel as if it were an extension of your own home regardless of which chapel you choose. We offer a wide variety of services and merchandise options to accommodate every family no matter customs faith or financial
situation. Memories are timeless treasures of the heart and we believe that the memory of your loved one should be commemorated in a way that is unique to their life. Perhaps grandpa was an avid fisherman or mom had a lifelong passion for gardening. No matter what set them apart we are here to help you tell their story. Our on-site team of graphic designers will assist with the creation of personalized displays such as casket head panels collages tribute DVDs and a memory box where your friends and family are welcome to share their favorite memory.
Did you know that our Browntown Chapel is home to The On~Site Crematory? You can rest assured that your loved one is under our direct supervision and cared for as if they were a member of our own family from the moment they are brought into our care until the cremation process is complete. As more families are selecting cremation over traditional burial we want you to be confident that we offer the level of care we feel our families deserve. We want to provide you and your family peace of mind. We have seen tremendous growth and success while building a name that families can trust. While we are proud of and humbled by our accomplishments our core value remains the same – we are with you every step of the way. •

POSTCARD FROM
CAPE COD
THE D PROFILE’S ROBBIN ‘RO’ MOYER SHARES THOUGHTS AND MEMORIES FROM SUMMER 2019 ROAD TRIP uly is such a great time of the year to take road trip to Cape Cod! The weather was sunny and warm and the evenings just a bit cooler allowing us to listen to the waves of the harbor while on the shores of Cape Cod. The journey’s first stop was a relaxing one at ‘Wine on the 1st B&B’ at Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada, that we booked through AIRBNB. Our hosts, Tim and Tamara, were outstanding and served an amazing Euro-style breakfast, fresh ground coffee, and their table setting seemed fit for royalty! We took a drive around the area, visited a few wineries, then headed to the Falls (which I was anxious to do). The last time I was at the Falls was when I was 8 years old and I always had the desire to ‘get closer’ to them. When we arrived I had that same feeling of awe as I did as a child. And the sounds of the Falls, so familiar from so long ago! We took the Hornblower Niagara Cruise. We ventured so close that we felt the rush of wind, water and rain, created by the Falls - a childhood dream! In the evening we went ‘Behind the Falls’, under the stars where the falls lit up in rainbow colors as fireworks went off in the sky!
J
The next morning we thanked our B & B hosts and headed off to Massachusetts. My husband vacationed at Cape Cod each summer as a child and he was anxious to return. When we arrived, he exclaimed, “It hasn’t changed a bit!” It was just as quaint, and seemingly untouched from when he visited as a child. It is a great family-friendly, restaurant with classic clam-shack eats! One of the most memorable times on our trip was visiting the Falmouth Yacht Club. What a view of the Harbor! We were so excited to be welcomed there and the ambience and view were beyond spectacular! And let’s not forget Jim’s Clam Shack located in Falmouth on the harbor. It was our favorite local fare dining spot where we enjoyed fresh lobster and clams. It’s a rustic, counter-serve, restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating (picnic tables of course), offering classic seafood fare. The lobster rolls were incredible and the fried clams, yummy! As we drove along the shoreline, my husband reminisced and smiled while I enjoyed the views and sounds of Cape Cod! A visit there (and Niagara Falls) will take you back in time!

Social Media: Are You Boosting Brand Awareness Facebook: This one is a nobrainer. More than 1 billion Facebook users login daily. That’s good news for marketers who have figured out how to make their brand stand out. Although most posts are much longer, ex-
perts say short, attention-grabbing posts work best. So, if you don’t fancy yourself a wordsmith, this might be the perfect starterplatform for your business. LinkedIn: Although LinkedIn trails Facebook in both users and business profiles, it’s still the place professionals and thought leaders love to hang out. More than 150 million U.S. employees have LinkedIn profiles. And 50% are college graduates.
Besides the more professional posts you’ll see in the feed, LinkedIn is an excellent place for business networking opportunities. If you’re looking to build brand awareness among industry experts, don’t underestimate the power of LinkedIn. Instagram: Owned by Facebook, Instagram is a visual playground. The platform is known for its images and video content, and is a favorite among foodies and fashionistas. If you’re a restauranteur, or produce esthetically pleasing products, consider creating an Instagram account. Honorable mentions: Also check out YouTube and Pinterest, who combined, have well over 1 billion users. Ready to makeover your marketing strategy and include social media as part of your plan? I’m here to help!
