What should I do with my old 401K plan? We’ll help you explore your suitable options

Ask yourself a few questions if you are changing jobs or retiring: Would you benefit from professional advice? Does your 401K plan have adequate investment options to meet your needs? Are you paying attention to notices from your 401K provider? Do you have a risk management process in place for your needs and goals?

Call us today for your complimentary consultation In addition to the significant tax penalties cashing out your 401(k) can result in a serious setback to your retirement savings. Diverting that money away from your retirement savings means that you’ll miss out on the power of compounding. You may need to save a lot more in the future to make up for the compound earnings you might have received if you’d stayed invested. Nicholas J. Stroia is a wealth management consultant with Stroia Securities Services Inc. All securities are offered through Sigma Financial Corporation a member of FINRA /SIPC. editor’s note /welcome

Back to normal?

Next Issue In our New Year’s issue, we share stories from residents and staff at the newly rebranded senior living facility: Allegria Village

■ When mask restrictions were lifted and businesses started expand-

ing their business hours, I think we all breathed a sigh of relief – ‘surely, we’re getting back to normal now?’ While I’m certainly glad that we’re beginning to feel safer and our lives are resuming with almost minimum interruption, I hope I never forget that time when I was reminded just how fortunate I am. You see, before the pandemic, I never thought about rearranging meal plans based on what may or may not be available at the grocery store. Nor did I think anything of making impromptu plans with friends to meet up at our local restaurant or bar. And finally, that brief period when we all looked into a stranger’s eyes and sincerely urged them to, “stay safe,” is one I think I’ll treasure forever. Looking forward to another holiday season, I can imagine that with shelves continuing to run bare, there is still a lot of uncertainty about how successful our plans will be. I know I’ve worried my fair share about things out of my control and even been a bit guilty of thinking that the holiday just won’t be the same if I can’t get that one spice or if my new dining room table doesn’t get delivered in time. Trust me, I get it - everyday life is hectic, and we look forward to the holidays more than ever as an escape from the stress of it all. Sometimes it even seems like the holidays are the rare opportunities we get to bank those precious memories. I hope I don’t sound too moralizing when I say that I’m striving to create my happiness by taking a different view on potential disappointments. When I go to work the day after the holiday, I’ll remember how many people lost their jobs and be glad I still have one to go to. When I’m forced to remember new shop hours for my favorite diner, I’ll try to be grateful that the little mom and pop shop weathered the storm. And when my friends and family passionately debate some hot topic, I’ll think about how lucky I am that they’re still on this earth to argue at all. Life is short, and it shouldn’t take a pandemic or other disaster for us to remember how to be grateful for what we have instead of focusing on what we don’t. With that, I hope your holidays are happy, healthy, and filled with gladness.

Nicholas J. Stroia and the Stroia Securities Services team offer services to businesses as well as individuals.

PHOTOS IAN POKRIEFKA

■ Planning for the future can sometimes

feel intimidating. While retirement might seem distant like a star in the night sky, it’s actually much closer than you think. Time waits for no one, and neither should you when it comes to formulating a plan for the future. Stroia Securities, based in Southgate, have a variety of services to offer in terms of your financial goals. While the road to obtaining peace of mind has the appearance of a weathered path fraught with difficulty – there’s no need to travel alone. Currently, Stroia Securities Services is in the process of expanding their practice in terms of wealth management and health insurance. By offering new services to their clientele, they can give many the reassurance desperately needed at a time when the financial world is anything but stable. Nicholas J. Stroia, wealth management consultant and owner, doesn’t waste any time in laying his cards on the table. With no pretense regarding his business prac-

tices, he reveals his plans for expansion. “We plan on having the best boutique wealth management firm in the Downriver area. We use the top technology and provide full service with your wealth management needs. We also keep open line of communication with our clients CPAs and Attorneys.” Because the working world is multifaceted and made up of several different people, Stroia offers services to businesses as well as individuals. “All our clients get customized financial planning solutions and portfolios.” This inclusive approach breaks from the misconception that planning for the future is helplessly out of reach for the average consumer. Planning for the future is not linear, nor is it the same for everyone. For the working family, assistance in setting aside money for college and choosing the right health insurance will alleviate much of the stress that comes with financial planning. For businesses responsible for the well-being of their staff, Stroia provides employee workshops and a multitude of group benefits such as 401K and advanced retirement planning. With so much in the works at Stroia Securities, it seems that the sky is the limit for offering the very best is financial planning. While the future is always uncertain, Stroia and company are here to help you break through the glass ceiling that so many feel trapped by. dp For further information, or to schedule an appointment, please contact Stroia Securities Services at 734-283-8780 or visit stroiagroup.com Winter/Spring 2021-22

■ As of September, it has be four years since John Serb opened the

Edward Jones Investments branch in Woodhaven, Michigan. He started on this path as a financial advisor with one goal in mind – to offer state-of-the art investment tools, coupled with a one-on-one approach to guidance for families with complex financial needs. John has extensive finance experience, having been in this industry for 14 years. Prior to opening his office, he worked in corporate finance. “In the corporate setting I wasn’t making a difference in anyone’s lives,” John explained, “I wanted to have an impact on the community I'm from and work with individuals and families Down16

river.” Relationships are key, and in his view, meeting face to face and getting to know his clients on a personal level builds strong relationships. John’s branch assists families and individuals with an array of financial needs such as, retirement income strategies, wealth management, estate and legacy strategies, business retirement plans, and education savings. He accomplishes this through a proven, long-term investment philosophy that emphasizes quality and diversification. John normally starts his day by doing market research and catching up on market news. He’ll then review his clients’ portfolios that could be impacted based on the information he finds, then making those adjustments becomes his number one priority. After that, he’ll tend to his appointments for the day. “The majority of my day is consumed with portfolio reviews and trading. “I manage for the long-term through a proven investment philosophy that emphasizes quality and diversification,” John says. As a lifelong member of the Downriver community, John spends much time and effort getting to know his clients and understanding their needs. dp For further information, or to schedule an appointment, please contact John Serb of Edward Jones Investments at 734-672-7504.

Ameriprise Financial Ameriprise helps deliver financial stability in a time of uncertainty EDIT JEROME REUTER

//

PHOTOS TONE MARTINEZ

■ The recent global pandemic was a reminder that life can change at a moment’s notice. Obtaining financial stability and preparing for retirement can seem like an arduous task–not to mention one that’s far off in the distance. “Pay yourself first” is the advice offered by Chuck Moyer, a financial advisor with 37 years of experience. Moyer, and his partner, Todd Cousino, Financial Advisor, are both affiliated with Ameriprise Financial. Combining their knowledge and experience, they’re here to offer their assistance to a public whose world is rapidly changing around them. In the modern age of social media, and rapid technological development, a solid plan for the future is still a strong foundation. Moyer believes that early financial planning isn’t just possible, it’s essential. “There are things you can do to prepare that pathway,” Moyer says. This is followed by a reminder of what we’re likely head-

ing towards: “There won’t be less taxes, there’ll be more… healthcare won’t cost less, it will cost more.” With the road ahead becoming increasingly difficult, it seems that now more than ever, we should lend an ear to the voice of experience. Referring to social security as fraught with confusion, Moyer stresses the importance of possessing the resources to make informed financial decisions. “Educating people in the midst of their working career will go a long way for having a comfortable retirement.” With pensions becoming increasingly unavailable for many, effective decision-making, first-hand knowledge, and implementing the right steps for the future may be more important than ever. For those who think it might be too early to start planning because they’re nowhere near retirement, Moyer is adamant – “Oh, yes you are.” Addressing the retirement challenge ten years before retirement is not too early to establish a plan. Many retirement strategies take years to implement effectively.

“Short-term wants and needs often pale in comparison to the demand on your savings and retirement.”

“We go out and we provide financial wellness education to employees because those people in their 30s, 40s, and 50s may know about saving rather than throw their money into an unknown 401K...”

Moyer’s partnership with Todd Cousino, which began in 2020, is the basis for a foundation built upon experience and industry knowledge. Cousino, whose strengths lie in comprehensive financial planning are complimented by Moyer’s in-depth knowledge of market cycles and theories that tie in with equity and securities. Cousino’s 26 years of experience combined with Moyer’s attest to their ability to provide the public with the necessary tools for paving a road ahead that can help maintain its structural integrity when uncertainty is all around. As the old saying goes, ‘people don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan.’ Moyer and Cousino are implementing a plan for a future to help people avoid failure. dp For further information, or to schedule an appointment, please contact Chuck Moyer at chuck.moyer @ ampf.com or 734-258-1854. Back to their roots Goodwin, Lademan & Associates’s grand opening of their new office in Allen Park EDIT PROFILE STAFF

■ In 1947, Linda Lademan’s parents, Lawrence and Betty Lademan started the insurance agency in the basement of Betty’s parents’ on Dasher St. in Allen Park. It was a meager beginning–knocking on doors to sell Homeowners and Auto Insurance. However, the business flourished. When Linda’s parents retired, they left a multi million dollar agency as the second generation stepped into ownership. By this time, the business had moved to Southgate. In 1999, Linda Lademan and her husband David Goodwin formed Goodwin, Lademan and Associates, Inc. and moved the business to Taylor. For three generations the family has proudly served insurance needs of Michigan’s Southeast communities. Linda and David’s son, Brian Goodwin, joined the agency in 2016, becoming the third generation of this family in the business. Recently, GLA made the decision to relocate to its original roots in Allen Park. Their new office can be found next to the pocket park at 6736 Allen Rd., with their entrance off White St. just across from the City of Allen Park Community Center. The agency’s continued success is attributed to the wealth of knowledge and experience offered to clients says the agency’s president, David B. Goodwin, CPCU. Goodwin, Lademan and Associates agents are licensed in all lines of Property, Casualty, Life, Health and Disability Insurance. They have earned some of the highest degrees and designations the industry offers. dp Goodwin, Lademan and Associates, Inc. can be reached at 734-287-2400. Their new office can be found next to the pocket park at 6736 Allen Rd., Allen Park, with the entrance off White St., just across from the community center.

Martenson Pet Cremation

The Martenson Family of Funeral Homes consists of six locations, Martenson’s Funeral Home West Road Chapel and Ridge Chapel in Trenton, and Martenson’s Funeral Home in Allen Park, Rockwood, Monroe and Maybee, Michigan, has been serving families for over eighty years.

Offering the opportunity to say goodbye to a pet in a healing, dignified way ■ Death is a hard enough subject to talk about, let alone choosing

options when you are suffering from the loss of a loved one. The Martenson Family of Funeral Homes have assembled a team of specialists to help families through the grief process in a caring and thoughtful manner. “Our team is made up of trusted professionals and many of my own family as well,” said John Martenson, Jr. “My son Michael, and daughter in law Hillary, have a passion for animals and have recently added pet cremation to our list of family care services.” Those who have enjoyed the love of a pet over the course of many years know that you can feel the loss of that companionship very deeply. Beloved, loyal friends deserve a tribute just as a family member would. That is why The Martenson Family Pet Services now offers the opportunity to say goodbye to a pet in a healing, dignified way. They offer many touching and dignified services that help you honor the memory of your pet. Pets are cremated individually in a dedicated cremator in their Rockwood location. “We can even offer the additional service of cremation viewing, at no extra charge,” said Martenson, “which allows the pet owner to watch the initial cremation process, if that is important to them.” Those that choose private pet cremation can pick up their pet’s remains directly at The Martenson Family Pet Services, your veterinarian’s office or even have them delivered right to their home. There are many urn options, commemorative clay paw prints, pet jewelry, and a memorial viewing area. Hillary Martenson, who is a licensed Director/Embalmer in the State of Michigan is heading up this new endeavor. Hillary attended the University of Detroit Mercy’s School of Nursing before discovering her interest in the funeral service profession. She transferred to Wayne State University’s Mortuary Science Program where she earned her bachelor’s degree in 2014. “It is wonderful that I can combine my love for animals with my passion for funeral service,” said Hillary Martenson. Michael Martenson, Director/Mortician, graduated from Trenton High School in 2008. He received a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration from Adrian College with a Minor in Illustration in

West Road Coins Rusty Hohman gives a lot of his hard-earned money to help others in need because he feels it is the right thing to do EDIT JOHN HALL

■ Rusty Hohman knows what it’s like to need a helping hand. The owner of West Road Coins in Trenton gives a lot of hardearned money to help others in need because he feels it is the right thing to do and because he has a personal connection to heartache. Hohman family’s house caught fire and was destroyed. The Salvation Army helped his family with everything that they needed in a difficult situation. He gives back to charities and organizations as he feels indebted for the help he and his family received. “If I know a group is legitimate and where the money goes and that they do a good job at helping people, I am okay about donating to them,” he explains. In addition to the Salvation Army, some of the groups that Hohman and West Road Coins support include the Special Olympics, USO, Paralyzed Veterans, and Wounded Warriors. He also contributes to Easter Seals, St. Jude’s Hospital, and Toys for Tots. Many of the organizations to which Hohman gives are linked to the military and veterans. His son-in-law served in the

If someone needs help I will reach into my pocket.” Yet Hohman doesn’t give to charity in order to shine a brighter light on West Road Coins and doesn’t attribute any business success to his philanthropy. The Tutoring Center “Most middle schoolers don’t volunteer information so I offer you several ways to start the conversation” EDIT AMANDA SMITH, OWNER/CENTER DIRECTOR

■ Is your child starting middle school nest

year? Students new to middle school have additional stress and anxiety, it’s a big change! There are things you can do to help put them at ease. 1. TALK ABOUT WHAT’S SCARY Most middle schoolers don’t volunteer information so to start the conversation try one of these. “I see you’re a little stressed about starting school. Are you worried about moving between classes on your own?” Or “You had a hard time find a group of kids you liked last year. Is that something you’re worried about this year?”

2. MAKE AN ACTION PLAN You may not be able to come up with a solution for every worry but helping them know what to do, just in case, for most will help ease their anxiety.

3. GO OVER THEIR SCHEDULE TOGETHER Visit the school, practice walking from class to class. Reassure them that there will be adults and teachers in the halls to help guide them if needed.

4. PRACTICE OPENING THEIR LOCKER! Combination locks when you’re in a hurry to get to class can be tricky. Practice, practice,

practice. Also talk about locker organization so they can find what they need for each class quickly. Color coding subjects is a great help. And, at least weekly, CLEAN OUT your locker!

5. BOOST THEIR CONFIDENCE Middle school is a time where students are expected to be more independent but remind them, they’re not on their own, you’re there to help. Don’t downplay their challenges but focus on their strengths and passions. Give praise in a way that boosts your child’s confidence and find ways to help them stick with it when middle school gets tough.

Most importantly, ask for help. Don’t struggle or get frustrated, you have resources available to help you, use them! dp The Southgate Tutoring Center is located at 15305 Dix Toledo Rd., Southgate. For more info please call 734-785-8430 or visit tutoringcenter.com Winter/Spring 2021-22

“Getting checked out early can prevent an injury that derails your attempt to return to activity.” Veli P. Sipila, PT, OMT, FAAOMPT, CIDN

Cooling down transitions your body back to a lower state of stress - it brings your heart rate and breathing down, decreases blood flow to your muscles and back to places like your digestive system, and helps you relax. It’s also a great place for static stretches if you need some work on your flexibility. TAKE A DAY OFF EXPERT

OrthoSport Physical Therapy Returning to activity after a pandemic EDIT VELI P. SIPILA, PT, OMT, FAAOMPT, CIDN

■ During the COVID-19 pandemic, activ-

ity levels dropped for a lot of people. Between stay at home orders, gym closures and working from home, people became more sedentary. On top of that, there were shortages of equipment like dumbbells and bicycles, making staying active at home difficult even if you wanted to. With the new year approaching, things look different; vaccines are widely available, restrictions are loosened and people are looking to get back in shape. That’s all good news, but if you had a long break from activity, your body might not be ready to jump right back in. Here are a few tips to getting more active without getting hurt: 30

|

GO DOWNRIVER.COM •

Winter/Spring 2021-22

START SLOW

• If you’re a runner, think about a walk to run program • If you’re a weight lifter, start with lighter weights and less reps • Whatever your activity of choice is, start with short periods of activity and gradually work your way back up WARM UP AND COOL DOWN

Warming up gets your heart and lungs ramp-ed up and prepares your muscles and tendons for the increase in activity about to come. Include some light cardio like jogging, calisthenics, or cycling, followed by active stretching like butt kicks, high knees, or yoga.’

Rest days let your body recover and keep you from getting burned out. Not enough exercise isn’t good for you, but too much of a good thing can cause problems too. WATCH FOR SIGNS OF INJURY

Some soreness for a few days after activity is normal, especially if you’ve had a long break. But there are a few common issues to watch out for as you return to activity: • Swelling or bruising • Joint pain, especially in the knees or shoulders • Foot pain, which could be a sign of plantar fasciitis • Muscle strains - particularly common in the hamstrings • Sprains - most common in the ankle Any of these issues justifies a call to your physical therapist. Getting checked out early can prevent an injury that derails your attempt to return to activity. PTs see all of the issues just mentioned on a regular basis and can help safely guide you back into a more active lifestyle. dp For more info please call Vali and OrthoSport Physical Therapy Center at 734-307-7037 or visit orthosportonline.com

Ultimate Dental HEALTH

Dr. Sammi Hadad and the staff at Ultimate Dental are doing their part to ensure a safe experience for patients EDIT JACKI KILBRIDE

PHOTOS IAN POKRIEFKA, KYLER BEKE

Now that COVID is nearly behind us and a sense of normalcy is returning, it’s past time to get

our health back on track. Dr. Sammi Hadad at Ultimate Dental in Brownstown has a message for those dragging their feet scheduling a dental appointment. “Regular dental checkups have always been important and go beyond the health of your teeth. A healthy mouth is a big step towards a healthy body,” she says. “We know people with gum disease have a higher number of incidents of stroke and heart attacks. And, inflammation in your mouth can cause health effects for the rest of your body.” D 10

Dr. Hadad says that she sees a large number of people looking for smile makeovers as we come out of the pandemic.

At Ultimate Dental, the staff continues to do their part to ensure a safe experience for patients. The office is continuously disinfected, everyone wears a mask, and patients are screened before they are seen. These practices are why there were no known cases of COVID spread in Dr. Hadad’s office. In fact, dental offices across the US have not shown to be a source of transmission of the virus at all. “The extra precautions adopted during COVID will likely impact the infection control practices going forward, keeping us all safer from disease transmission,” Dr. Hadad explains. Dr. Hadad says that even before masks were coming off, she saw a large number of people looking for smile makeovers to come out of the pandemic looking and feeling good. Procedures from a simple whitening to replacement of teeth are all available. For anyone looking to improve their smile, Ultimate Dental offers cutting-edge technology such as Cerec same-day-crowns. With Cerec crowns, a patient receives a digital imaging scan and the crown is designed and fabricated on site. It is then permanently placed in the patient’s mouth – all in the same visit. This differs from a traditional crown where the patient must wait for a few weeks while the crown is made off-site, then return for a second appointment, which is time-consuming and inconvenient. While a trip to the dentist may fill some with anxiety, Dr. Hadad says that her office strives to make everyone feel comfortable. “We’re just good at it,” she says, “the fact that we take our time,

“I don’t recommend neglecting checkups and treatment as it can have a detrimental effect on your overall health.” Dr. Sammi Hadad

listen, find out what it is they have a problem with and minimize those issues is why we have success converting fearful patients into happy patients.” As if you needed a better reason to make your appointment, Dr. Hadad also noted that now is the time to take advantage of dental insurance before annual benefits go unused. After all, putting it off until the end of the year may make it impossible to get the appointment you need. dp To make your appointment, please give the staff at Ultimate Dental in Brownstown a call at 734-479-4600. Dr. Ronald Morris Dream of becoming a doctor began in 7th grade In the latest entry into our TOP DOC series, we are covering Dr. Ronald Morris, who residents will recognize best for his work out of Downriver Surgery Center, which was founded by Morris himself after taking over a practice that had been there for 30 years. For those unfamiliar with Morris or his practices, he is an oral surgeon who is following his dream of doctoring that began when he was in 7th grade, growing up in Madison Heights. At the time when he was young, he just wanted to be an orthodontist, but along his journey through dental school as an older young man, he didn’t enjoy his first orthodontic class as much as he hoped. “It was so boring, I thought I was gonna die,” Morris admits. He decided to take a change in trajectory for his career during the second semester of his third year of dental school, when he discovered his excitement surrounding his first oral surgery rotation at

Riverside Sav-Mor Pharmacy Pharmacist Keith Haddix Jr. places the community’s needs first EDIT JEROME REUTER

//

PHOTOS JULIAN VANSLYKE

“I step in when duty calls...” These are the words of Keith Haddix, one of the Downriver’s most knowledgeable and experienced pharmacists. Haddix is more than someone who fills prescriptions, he’s a pillar of the community who understands the importance of family and wellness. He’s the type of fixture you’d expect to find in a Normal Rockwell painting – the neighborhood pharmacist who knows everyone in town and epitomizes the wholesome values of smalltown America. The recent pandemic elicited a great deal of anxiety from the general public. While many were quarantining and exercising the necessary precautions to stay safe, Haddix and his staff at Sav-Mor Pharmacy went into action with the needs of the community in mind. “I’m a family person, we’re people-people.” Haddix’ words are not simple platitudes or a clever marketing slogan, they’re the promise from someone who believes in giving back to the area he calls home. To keep their clients safe, Haddix and his team reached out to customers and offered delivery. A service that wasn’t a new procedure for the Sav-Mor team, who were one of the first to offer competitive delivery to customers before the service became popular. Aside from the sale of pharmaceuticals, Haddix has never ceased in his desire to continue his education. The pharmacist is very knowledgeable in the process of compounding. This isn’t just a matter of making pharmaceuticals, it’s a method of making every prescription tailor-made for each individual patient. “We’re large enough to serve people,” Haddix explains. Sav-Mor also works closely with local practitioners of veterinary medicine, ensuring that pets get the right dosage they need to sustain a healthy living. “I’m proud of what I’ve done in the community. I’m very proud to have made my living Downriver. I’m very proud of these people,”

Fiorelli’s Collection From humble beginnings, three venues were established by the Fiorelli family EDIT SUNDRA HILSINGER

PHOTOS JANE FIJAL

The Fiorelli family has been a part of Downriver for the last 42 years. In 1954, Luigi Fiorelli

moved with his family to Flat Rock, from Monterivoso, Italy, to work for Ford Motor Company. Throughout his 58 years with Ford Motor Company and later as a consultant for CPI – Contract Professionals, Luigi was always caring for his coworkers, friends, and family. Often, Luigi would invite his coworkers home to treat them to a delicious Italian meal and a glass of homemade wine. The matriarch of the family, Jeanine Fiorelli, would make sure everyone was well fed and enjoying themselves. From this humble beginning, three venues were established under the umbrella presently known as Fiorelli’s Restaurant Collection under the direction of John and Pam Fiorelli. D 20

offers an extensive wine collection, including wine imported from our family’s vineyard, Scacciadiavoli Cantina, in Montefalco, Italy. Another feature within the restaurant is The ROC Wine Locker Club. This club is a private membership of wine connoisseurs. Members have lockers onsite which they can access when dining at the collection. Membership is based on referrals from existing members. The ROC Restaurant and Wine Bar is served by reservations. The last venue in the collection is Wize Guys Bistro, a casual dining space that has served the famous Fiorelli’s pizza and subs since 1978, burgers made from Certified Fresh Piedmontese Beef, and several salad and sandwich options. Wize Guys Bistro has a full bar with sixteen beers on tap and an outdoor patio where live music is held weekly on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday between 6 - 9 p.m. Quality ingredients for the three venues are sourced locally. The processes the team follows to prepare each dish, and the service they provide to each customer, express the values and traditions that have been passed down through each generation. Every person that visits the venues at the collection – whether its their first time or their fiftieth – leave knowing they are now part of the Fiorelli family. The collection’s team recently welcomed a new addition, Fiorelli’s cousin, Executive Chef Matteo Pogliani. Born in Milan, Italy, Matteo has trained as a professional chef in restaurants across various countries, including Italy, France, Ireland, and Germany. He previously worked at Stippe Restaurant in Ravensburg, Germany, where he learned traditional German food; Bastion Restaurant in Kinsale, Ireland, which recently received a Michelin star in September 2019; and The Park Hyatt in Milan, Italy, known for its renowned Chef Filippo Gozzoli. As a child, Matteo recalls his passion for cooking initially began while watching his grandmother in the kitchen. “I remember standing around her kitchen watching her prepare food for my grandfather and me and tasting everything.” Matteo’s first experience in a professional kitchen was in his early teens. “My father was working as a waiter at a restaurant in Milan and asked

Giving Back Throughout the 42 years in the area, the Fiorelli family has supported Flat Rock and the surrounding area. John served on the Tax Increment Finance Authority (TIFA) Board for 35 years, helping develop various commercial properties in the TIFA district. Both John and Pam are members of different downriver groups, including Rotary, 100 Women Who Care, and Southern Wayne County Regional Chamber. The Fiorelli’s are big supporters of the recent recreational activities conducted through Downriver Linked Greenway, Destination Downriver, Huron River Water Trail. Through all of the community activities over the years, John and Pam have prioritized giving back to the local schools.

I assisted with small tasks such as washing salad or cutting vegetables, but after a few minutes in that kitchen I felt a calling to continue my career in this industry.” Over the years, Matteo has worked for and alongside many great chefs, and one major skill that they demanded was discipline. The collection has been passed down through the years and is looking forward to continuing into this next generation while holding the traditions and values set by Luigi, Jeanine, John and Pam Fiorelli for many years to come. dp

Twins Body & Trim Works When it comes to choosing a repair shop people respond well to honesty and quality EDIT SUNDRA HILSINGER

PHOTOS IAN POKRIEFKA

While the early 80’s economy was not the most conducive for starting a new business, that’s exactly what twin brothers Don and Ron Pipkens did. “I was out of a job, and there was nobody hiring, so we found a building to buy in Southgate,” says Don, who at the time was working on cars out of his garage after leaving American Sunroof. When Ron left his own job at Henderson Glass, the two purchased a welding shop and decided to go into business together. Don adds, “The funny thing is, neither of us knew how to weld, and we’d bought a welding shop.” After the difficult job of obtaining the money needed for a down payment, and despite the recession, the two-man shop did not lack for customers. “We were busy from day one,” says Don. A good deal of their business came from word of mouth as news of good service travels quickly, and Don had already built a reputation from the

year he spent working out of his garage. It didn’t hurt that they were Downriver natives. For about a year, the twins worked together out of their Southgate shop. While Ron handled all things glass and upholstery, Don did the bodywork. Eventually, they decided that this arrangement could be improved upon. “I got cars dirty, and he got cars clean,” explains Don regarding the nature of their range in services. So in 1981, the business expanded to a new location in Flat Rock,

Twin brothers, Don (pictured above) and Ron Pipkens, have offered high quality service to Downriver for many years.

SALUTE

Virgil Huddleston Proudly served his country as a corporal in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II EDIT SUNDRA HILSINGER

■ Virgil Huddleston was a man who could

fix just about anything he put his hands on, loved his family dearly, and proudly served his country as a corporal in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. The second oldest of eight siblings, Virgil was born in the small mining community of Fonde, Kentucky in 1926. Before enlisting in May of 1944, Virgil was known as the local handyman. “He was like 12-years-old and able to fix these old cars in the neighborhood so people would come to him for everything,” says Virgil’s daughter, Stephanie Bass Luke. Stephanie remembers that growing up, her family rarely hired anyone because Virgil did it all from plumbing to electrical, cars to lawnmowers, and more. “The guy could fix anything.” With his gift, Virgil worked as a mechanic in the Air Corps, where he was also required to learn how to fly the aircrafts. Stephanie says that her father expressed how fortunate he felt to have the opportunity to travel the world while serving his country. Like many young soldiers missing home, Virgil would sometimes lay in the barracks at night, crying and praying that he could go back home to his family. “I remember him saying that he didn’t like what he had to do, but he felt that he was called to do it,” says Stephanie. Being so family-oriented, Virgil likely felt the separation from them immensely but did what he could to help them while miles away. “He came from a large family, living in the hills of Kentucky, there were nine of them and they weren’t that well off so my dad would have his check sent home to his parents to help out,” says Stephanie. On leave, Virgil made it a priority to take his siblings out shopping. After two years, Virgil left the Air Corps in July of 1946. Upon returning home, he married a local girl named Jean and the D 36

about United States Army Air Corps Renamed from the Air Service created during WWI by President Woodrow Wilson, the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC) was a combatant branch of the Army, active from 1926 until 1942. It was officially disbanded in 1947. During his time as a mechanic, Virgil would likely have worked on and flew a number of pursuit, observation, and bomber air crafts, traveling across the world in service of his country.

couple soon moved to Detroit, where Virgil would work for different factories before finally moving to Flat Rock and becoming a truck driver. Driving kept Virgil away from home for days at a time, but Stephanie says she and her four siblings always looked forward to his return. “We had to write stuff that we wanted to say,” she explains, “and once my brother wrote that he was excited to hear the truck coming down the road, but my mom wasn’t because she’d be saying ‘Hurry up! Pick up your toys! Put that away!” Virgil continued driving for about 20 years before retiring. In his retirement, he dedicated himself to caring for his wife while she battled breast cancer until her passing in 1990. Stephanie says that her father also enjoyed gardening and visiting his family in the south as often as possible. “Family was huge to him. My dad always had the utmost respect for his parents. He bragged about them, and couldn’t wait to go see them. He just admired his parents so much." Virgil continued to be the local handyman for many years, fixing things around the neighborhood, and asking for nothing in return. Says Stephanie, “That’s who he was his entire life, selfless.” In his twilight years, Virgil was well cared for by the Ann Arbor VA Health System and his granddaughter Tabatha Bass, who lived with him for the last 8 years of his life. He appreciated how often the VA called on him to check in to see how he was doing and making house calls. The father of five children, 11 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren lived to be 96-years-old and died in his Carleton, MI home of natural causes. dp
