Ro’s Note! s we transition from summer to fall and winter seasons, we want to thank Kim, Annette, Chad, and the entire Recreation Commission, for their help in producing the Grosse Ile Profile. And the entire community for their support of our efforts. Our new issue features a photo-essay on the 2018 Grosse Ile Homecoming. We always enjoy joining in with the festivities, especially now with the Grosse Ile DDA, Rec. Dept., Rotary Club, and Macomb Street businesses, hosting their annual Paint the Town Red festivities that add to staples such as the Homecoming Parade and of course the Red Devils’ Homecoming football game. One of our favorite Homecoming traditions is visiting with friends at an alumni tailgate hosted by the Bagardi family (see photo below). It’s one of many annual traditions that make this weekend so unique and special.
A Emerging Artist
Nick Mijak, painter and sketch artist, was born in Romeo, Michigan, and showed off his work at Paint the Town Red.
We also feature the dynamic FatherDaughter duo, Warren and Bridget Hurst. Warren has been serving Grosse Ile resident with their dock and seawall needs for 45 years. Bridget is now a vital part of the business, serves on the Grosse Ile Islandfest Commission, and yes, is an avid boater too! Watch for our next issue that will feature the Rec. Dept.’s Winter/Spring schedule. If you’d like to promote your business or organization in Grosse Ile Profile, please contact me at 734-282-4640, or by e-mail at robbin@grosseilemag.com

“We all had a wonderful time visiting with the next generation at the annual Grosse Ile High School tailgate hosted by Margaret Bagardi and family! This may be the last year of this tradition as Margaret’s youngest child graduates in 2019. We’re hoping it continues, but if not, this is our final pic together!”

GIGI, SHOWN WITH MENKA THE SPHYNX, SHARES A SPECIAL HOLIDAY GREETING.
,
It s beginning to ,, look a lot like Christmas THE LEAVES have been raked and bagged, the ponds have been covered, and the fish bubbler installed. While it’s a little bit challenging to work my way through the endless sea of colors, of red, gold, and yellow leaves, and avoiding any Gigi droppings, teeheeheehee… Dad takes care of all that and sometimes I wish I had a warm box indoors like stinky cat (Menka the Sphynx) uses, NOT!! The holiday hustle and bustle always has me in a festive mood. Whilst watch-
ing Dad prepare not one, but two turkey feasts within a single month, my Gigi jowls are drooling with the anticipation of two turkey times. When our huge Christmas tree arrives, I do my best to keep my big girl composure. The glitter and gift wrapping is in overdrive around our place. I sit patiently by the big green tree, protecting our presents so stinky cat doesn’t try to open hers early. We both get our Santa letters to the Big Red Box, beginning November 30th. ABOUT
“ I am a boater, through and through, that is my blood, it is who I am ” – Bridget Hurst
Specializing in dock maintenance and other steel working, Hurst Marine offers a wide array of services.
FOR FORTY-FIVE years, Warren Hurst has helped Islanders and other Downriver residents enjoy boating. Hurst Marine, a family business, is the jack-of-all-trades boating and steel working stop. With shops on Grosse Ile and in Rockwood, Hurst Marine specializes in building docks, hoists, and seawalls. Warren- a former ironworker- once wanted a seawall, dock, and hoist installed for his personal recreational boating. Unhappy with the work and process he witnessed, he believed he could do it better. He’s been doing it better ever since. Nov/Dec 2018 G R O S S E I L E |

Warren Hurst, owner of Hurst Marine, has been in providing service to Islanders for forty-five years Hurst Marine doesn’t stop when the boating season does. They use the winter months to work on equipment and gather the permits needed for next year’s projects.
Word traveled fast and Hurst Marine was born. Now, his daughter Bridget is working alongside him and eventually will take over the business. “I am a boater, through and through,” Bridget told the Grosse Ile Profile. “That is my blood; it is who I am.” Passion and love flowed through every word. As the boating season comes to an end, the work for Hurst Marine doesn’t stop. They use the down months of winter to gather the permits needed for projects in the springtime. Then, at their Rockwood location, they begin to build their customer’s seawalls, hoists, or docks. They will also work on any steel products, including trailers. When the coming winter thaws, Hurst Marine will be ready to get you back on the water. Warren and Bridget understand the bonds formed over the wakes. They’ll make sure your boats are ready to go for the approaching summer of family fun or catching fish–and they will love every minute of it. • hurstboathoist.com

“God had plans for me and blessed me with a good life, being able to give in many ways” – Jeanette Gronda EDIT SUNDRA HILLSINGER • PHOTOS JANE FIJAL
IN A WORLD where too many children go wanting, one local woman is using a lifetime of skill to do her part. Jeanette Gronda, Grosse Ile resident of over 50 years, says she was reading The Detroit News a few years ago when she saw an article about an organization helping girls in Africa and other impoverished countries. Little Dresses for Africa (LDfA) was founded in 2008 by Rachel O’Neill of Brownstown Township as a non-profit Christian organization. Their mission is to give little girls homemade dresses to show them they are worthy, and to help identify areas of need in their villages. “Never having daughters of my own to sew for, this was a perfect fit,” wrote Mrs. Gronda, “so I thought, now’s my chance to make dresses for little girls.” As a child, Mrs. Gronda battled juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and not expected to walk. In spite of the pain, with Nov/Dec 2018 G R O S S E I L E |

treatment and physical therapy given by her mother, Mrs. Gronda says she overcame the odds. These struggles encouraged her to pursue an education in nursing as a way to give back. Growing up on a farm in Illinois, Mrs. Gronda joined 4-H, where she learned to sew. Over the years, she earned a BSN, then an MSA, married and raised three sons. She continued to sew in her free time and endeavored to make five lap blankets for nursing home residents during Lent in place of giving something up. Through hard work, Mrs. Gronda became the clinical director for Henry Ford Health System’s Home Health Care. Today, they give two annual employee recognition awards in her honor. On top of this, Mrs. Gronda participated in various other health and educational programs. Her busy schedule kept sewing to a minimum. Retirement didn’t slow down the woman who fought so hard to gain mobility early in life. She continued to teach as a substitute, traveled as a Road Scholar, wrote for non-medical magazines and even self-published a children’s book called Uh, Oh, Boo Boo! She also began sewing lap blankets again and eventually for LDfA. Beginning with pillowcases, the suggested pattern for novices, Mrs. Gronda quickly moved onto more difficult patterns. So far, she has sewn over 120 dresses as well as reusable sanitary napkins so the young women can continue attending school during their cycle. Mrs. Gronda says, “I never in my life thought I’d be sewing sanitary pads.” The finished dresses are sent to Malawi, one of the world’s least-developed countries, where many of the girls own nothing. Although Mrs. Gronda has never seen a little girl wearing one of her dresses, she says, “I really, really, would like to. When I go online and look at the pictures, I’m always looking to see if any of the dresses look familiar to me.” Mrs. Gronda continues to sew, using materials she finds on sale, or from donation. Plans for future projects include “fidget” blankets that have zippers, snaps and other items attached to help dementia patients keep their hands busy. • littledressesforafrica.org

On Grosse Ile, you’ll find a one-stop shop for all your gardening and pet needs. Marie Pucak, the third owner of the business, took over just a few short years ago, after being a customer first. Then it was called Grosse Ile Marketplace, but since May of 2016, Marie and her husband have been providing Island residents and other Downriver gardeners and pet owners the best possible shopping experience imaginable. Taking over the Marketplace, which at first was a seasonal shop – closing their doors after the Christmas season – the Pucaks’ have transformed The Marketplace into a Pet and Garden Center. There are three legs to their business today: botany, pet supplies, and specialty gift items. It really is a shop for all. And the best part: the experi-

Whether it’s the smell of candles, flowers, or pet food that sets the ambiance, you can't help but smile when walking through the doors. The hometown spirit is alive and well inside the Island’s feed and pet store. Most of the customers are Grosse Ile residents; the employees look forward to seeing their “regular” pets each day and are always looking to see new, smiling faces. “You’ll come to the shop for plants and pet food; you’ll come back because of their service,” their website says. “We’ve planted our roots in the community, so we can help it grow.”

There is no substitute for passion in life. Finding your passion, and chasing it relentlessly, should be the pursuit of everyone with a pulse. For Beck and Dawn Green, June Smith, and Hilarie Van Bynen, dance is their passion. Since 1989, they have married that passion to their work and established Grosse Ile Academy of Dance. Mrs. Dawn Green brought the Academy of Dance to Grosse Ile with one mission, “bringing ballet to Downriver,” she told Grosse Ile Profile. Their focus is not just ballet, however, they also offer classes for jazz, tap, and other forms of the art. After successful completion of fire science education and training, the volunteer firefighters carry personal pagers. If a volunteer firefighter is in the geographical area of the emergency, they respond to it as quickly as they can. “The volunteers are very dedicated to the community and the fire service,” says Duncan Murdoch, fire chief of the Grosse Ile Fire Department. The fire department uses a variety of vehicles to help in an emergency like two pumper trucks, an airboat; the fire chief ’s vehicle, which contains a mobile command center, the Jaws of Life; and a pursuit boat that’s docked on the Detroit River. The Grosse Ile Fire and Police Departments also operate a command center within the Grosse Ile Township Public Safety Building.
