Wright’s Landscaping owner, Larry Wright, who started the company with his wife, states, “We have a great clientele and they speak very highly of our crew. We have gotten many, many compliments over the years on how well our crew works, how efficient they are, how steady they are and how high the quality of the work is.”

About 80% of Wright Landscaping’s business is either repeat business or referral business. The company has built up a strong clientele over the years and many keep asking them back year after year for upgrades or additional work around the property.

Wright shares that what he enjoys best about the work is the creativity side of it, “I like being able to do custom work for the customers. Very little of our stuff is what I would call cookie-cutter. It’s very unique in its design. We work with several landscape architects in the area and they do a lot of our custom design work.”

During the pandemic, the company found itself having two of its busiest years as people flocked to spruce up their yards for stay-cations with things like brick patios, outdoor kitchens, entertainment areas and home extensions. With business booming and material shortages, Wright urges people to get their plans ready as soon as possible so they have appropriate time to get everything done.

Pro Excavation & Demolition

Local excavating contractor has enjoyed great success since its launch more than a quarter-century ago

M Jason Azagalian and Steve Glover were attending college together while working part time as construction workers when they had an epiphany: A career in construction can be lucrative, and they wanted to work for themselves. So, in 1995, they turned their realization into a reality and founded Wyandotte-based Pro Excavation.

“Pro Excavation is a small, local business that serves the Downriver Community by providing highquality demolition and excavation services with a commitment to safety, trust, professionalism, and building lasting relationships,” Azagalian said. “Pro Excavation is equipped to handle large or small commercial, residential, and municipality projects, from pool removal and garage demolitions to cell tower installations, water main installations, and large commercial building demolitions. We have the experience and resources to handle it all.”

Like most startups, Pro Excavation wasn’t prepared to “handle it all” upon its founding 27 years ago. Azagalian and Glover initially employed one worker and rented equipment and office space. Pro Excavation’s lack of equipment nearly

derailed its first major commercial project when its lone piece of machinery was stolen from a job site in Flat Rock. Fortunately, Azagalian and Glover found ways to pivot and avert the crisis.

“Our first major commercial project was for a new parking lot at Pipers Restaurant,” Azagalian recalled. “On our second day, our only piece of equipment was stolen. Sheer determination, resourcefulness, and hard work got us through the project and we continue to work with the owner of Pipers Restaurant on various projects.”

Nowadays, Azagalian and Glover have a full-time, year-round staff, a vast range of demolition and excavation equipment, and their own office facility and equipment yard. These investments have paid dividends and given Pro Excavation a competitive advantage.

“Pro Excavation is not dependent on any third-party equipment rentals or repair shops,” said Azagalian, who, like Glover, is a lifelong native of Grosse Ile. “We own our equipment and perform our own maintenance and repair in-house.”

Azagalian and Glover are proud of their accomplishments and treasure the strong professional relationships they’ve cultivated with individuals across Downriver.
