At the project’s conclusion, Waterford Place grew from an independent living facility to a full-service continuing care community with assisted living and rehabilitation center. These new services allow residents to age in place regardless of the level of care they may need.

• Create an environment that is resident-centered, welcoming and restful while building confidence as a destination of rehabilitation care. • Create a state-of-the-art environment that is supportive, rewarding and comfortable to allow staff to focus on the needs of patients and families. • Create an exciting environment that demonstrates a commitment to the continuity of care and to increase patient satisfaction/ attraction while serving as a tool for staff recruitment and retention. • Create an environment that is efficient, flexible, and technologically seamless, which will allow the staff to live current and future culture and process methodology.

HUMAN EXPERIENCE SURVEY

“Our goals for this project were overarching. We needed to expand services while maintaining a quality experience for residents and staff. The design would need to be welcoming and home-like, yet professional. The new additions would need to be flexible to change with any future needs.”

Through a number of day-long sessions with leadership and other key stakeholders, goals for the new addition were established. Several overarching themes emerged: satisfaction of residents and families, satisfaction and retention of staff, and a facility that was financially and programmatically better prepared for the future. Design elements were incorporated through the process to help achieve these goals. They included:

A human experience survey was administered to discover staff’s thoughts regarding the current and future work environment. The survey showed 93% of employees found their ability to perform at expected standards was directly impacted by their environment. The survey also showed a desire for more natural light, views of nature, private spaces for confidential conversations and reenergizing during the work day.

Waterford Place, an independent senior living community, wanted to expand their continuum of care by adding assisted living and rehabilitation services. According to the United States census, a 71% spike in the 60+ population will occur between 2005 and 2020. The new services at Waterford Place would fulfill the specific needs of this growing population while offering seniors a home-like setting and the opportunity to age in place. The new addition had to be built on the grounds of the existing community. This meant that minimizing disruptions to residents and staff, while seeking opportunities to tie back into existing operations would be key challenges throughout the design and construction process.

Give seniors the ability to age in place. • 24 new assisted living units. • 39 new skilled nursing beds with rehabilitation services. Increase resident satisfaction and experience. • Private rooms, arguably one of the most important factors in resident satisfaction, were added in the assisted living section of the community. These new rooms provide an option for spouses to continue living together, despite requiring different levels of care. • Additional resident amenities were added including: expanded dining options, therapy spaces, pool and additional outdoor spaces. • The new space was designed with a focus on increasing the amount of natural light throughout the community.
