Reframing Libraries

WELLINGTON NZ DECEMBER 2016 “Thinking differently requires speaking differently.” George Lakoff*

Day One: Wednesday 7 December

Language and thinking are inseparable. The quick fire inferences and neural connections that thinking requires rely heavily on cognitive frames buried deep within our consciousness. Frames help us understand things; they inform our values and identity. Words, how they are used and how often, can strengthen a frame. Moreover, we reason using the frames we have internalised. Frames are, therefore, very important.

Unfurl the Frame: full day with dinner: 9am – 8pm

For over two years, the Unfurl that Frame Collective has asked: Is it possible to re-shape public discourse about the value of libraries by reframing the way we talk about them? We have held two stimulating events centred around this question. We have heard from and interacted with an array of special guests who have encouraged and taught Unfurl that Frame participants to be bolder and more confident in answering this question. Now, we want to go deeper. Our collective has expanded to include New Zealand library leaders from every library sector, and our Wellington-based workshop will explore the very geography and texture of frames; the ones we use ourselves, and the ones we continually encounter. Imagine if we could find new ways to speak that would open up different kinds of conversations with decision makers and communities? The Unfurl that Frame Collective believes that library leaders can consciously reframe the language they use about what libraries do, and what libraries mean to the people who need and support them. If language can activate and reinforce frames, particularly frames that align with our espoused values, then let’s get cracking at unfurling and shaking up the way libraries are framed. This will be an intensive, exploratory workshop. It might even be revolutionary. * Lakoff, G. (2004, 2014) Don’t Think of an Elephant!: Know your values and frame the debate, Chelsea Green Publishing, Vermont USA

Why frames matter. Why framing is essential to effective communication. What are the dominant frames currently in use in libraries? Are they working? If not, why not? What needs to be re-framed? How do we do it? We’ll show you how.

Day Two: Thursday 8 December Shake the frame: 4 hours + lunch: 10am – 2pm An opportunity to explore and test your new frames with an eclectic audience of real stakeholders. Names will be announced closer to the date. Venue: National Library of New Zealand Cost: $NZ450 Design and facilitation: Unfurl that Frame skilled facilitators + special guests Register now.
