THE JOHN PSATHAS PERCUSSION PROJECT
NEW MUSIC EDITIONS
October 2022
We are extremely pleased to announce the publication of three very important music editions. Vincent Ho’s The Twelve Chinese Zodiac Animals, Book 1 (PE212) for piano was released earlier in the year in conjunction with Canada’s Royal Conservatory of Music 2022 Piano Syllabus. This is a very important addition to our collection. 12 charming and challenging pieces have been composed especially for young players — prototyped with the composer’s daughter — to develop technical abilities.
We are also very excited to release the ninth volume of our Larry Pruden Collected Edition (PEP09). This edition contains representative examples of Pruden’s film music, incidental music and occasional pieces. It also draws a close to the series, which commenced in 2002, and is the first scholarly collected series of music by a New Zealand composer.

Our third release is a further addition to The John Psathas Percussion Project Corybas for Percussion Ensemble (PE193) was originally penned for piano trio but here it is expertly arranged by Omar Carmenates for mallet quintet and percussion. Carmenates has styled this arrangement in the same vein as Psathas’ Kyoto (PE174), and in creating the percussion part references the drumming styles of traditional greek music and jazz.
We are also pleased to announce our new online web-store https://store.prometheaneditions.com. The new store now provides seamless purchasing of print and digital formats of over 230 published editions. We’ve added photographs of each score and part to provide an accurate portrayal of every product. We have also made over 250 facsimile editions available for instant download, making them more accessible than ever before.

Arranged here for percussion ensemble by Omar Carmenates, Corybas is the first of two companion works Psathas wrote for piano trio, the other being Aegean (PE181), which Psathas has described as a postlude to Corybas. Psathas describes Corybas as dynamic, willful, playful, in contrast to the calmer, more serene, Aegean. The rhythmic foundation of Corybas is based on an odd-metered pattern found in some forms of Eastern European dance music.

Inspired by the Chinese Zodiac animals, Ho tailored this book of twelve piano composi tions to the educational needs of students in Levels 2 to 7 of the Royal Conservatory of Music Piano Series. Ho devoted much time to researching the animals’ legends, person ality traits, and cultural significance, as well as their distinguishing physical languages so as to capture their musical spirit and recreate their physical/gestural languages in pianistic form. In addition, he incorporates many sounds, harmonies, and performance techniques learned from his years of researching (and composing for) Chinese traditional instruments.

Larry Pruden (1925-1982) is one of a handful of New Zealand composers who studied under Benjamin Frankel at London’s Guildhall School of Music. Pruden’s significant con tribution to the establishment of a genuine New Zealand vernacular lives on in the works for which he is best known. Featured in this volume are Pruden’s film music, incidental music, and occasional pieces. This is the final publication of the Larry Pruden Collected Edition.

Mischievous
A little mouse cautiously pokes its head out of its hiding place to see if anyone is around. When it sees it is safe, it starts scurrying about in a playful manner while trying not to get caught. The mouse constantly runs around, jumping from one spot to another, and gets into places it's not supposed to be in. Pianistically speaking, the music is built around mirroring techniques — where both hands are playing the same musical ideas at the same time as mirror inversions of each other.
