former Australian World Number 1 tennis player Former world number one tennis player, Pat Rafter, spent five days in Shepparton in April for the 2009 Junior Davis Cup and Junior Federation Cup finals. The former world number one and member of the Tennis Hall of Fame is Australia’s most popular tennis star. His humility on and off the court has endeared him to fans. Pat won two US Open’s against all the odds in 1997 and 1998. He was the last of the great serve volleyers to play the game, and was plagued by a dodgy right shoulder that may have prevented him from reaching further greatness.

These world class competitions have been fantastic for Shepparton, what did you enjoy most about our region? Shepparton is a nice town, all the people have been very hospitable, and the tennis centre is great.

You started playing tennis when you were five, how important is junior development today? It’s important to enjoy tennis first of all, and then it’s also important to learn technique, and get that right.

If you weren’t an Australian tennis legend, what would you like to be famous for? Nothing. Being ‘famous’ has its drawbacks.

You have said the greatest honour of your career is winning the Australian of the Year award in 2002. World rankings and Grand Slams have been important to me, but I consider being named Australian of the Year to be the highlight of my life so far.

What is your next major goal? To be honest, I want to make sure my kids understand respect. This is my toughest challenge right now.

You are widely known as all round nice guy and committed charity worker , how would you describe yourself? I can also be a real pain but somehow that goes under the radar! Generally I try my best to be a decent citizen.

What would be your dream holiday? On a surf boat with three of my best mates with great surf, get to a golf course for a couple of rounds and then a week with my family by the pool eating nice food.

Foodie File Raelene is a familiar face at the restaurant in the front of house role most days and Steve is happy to be the jack-of-all-trades enjoying working in all stations “so I am aware of what is required in all jobs we give our staff.” The couple returned home to Shepparton after 10 years in a cafe and takeaway food business, Delatite Food Court, in Benalla. They had some time off around children but were keen to rejoin the hospitality industry and an a la carte restaurant was in their sights. “We have had Bohjass now for 12 months and we are confident we are offering what our customers want. We can be flexible with dining, the comfortable couches attract those in for a drink and the balcony over Wyndham St is great for more informal dining nearly all year round.” A large screen has been installed for corporate functions and the restaurant can be divided to cater for group bookings. Everything Jan and Graeme Weir wanted in their retired lives has been found on the banks of Lake Mulwala,

After nearly a decade of travelling from Donald to Mulwala for family holidays, Jan and Graeme chose the idyllic lake surrounds as their place of retirement and began building a home to cater for their family and new lifestyle. Over the past 13 years the energetic couple have built, bought and sold six homes, including a farm, in the Mulwala area but their most recent purchase has taken them back to the water - the familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very drawcard to the area more than two decades ago. The home is full of all the design elements a modern house can offer, with upper level privacy for the master bed and bath and designated study/office, and the lower level open plan kitchen, dining and lounge â&#x20AC;&#x201C; all making the most of the spectacular view over the lake. None more so than in the upstairs bathroom where a to-die-for free standing oval bath is placed precision like at a large return glass window which makes you feel like there is nothing between you and the water . No wonder this is Janâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s favourite room. The calming neutral tones of the ceiling to floor tiling is punctuated with a small white stone tile. Elegant! The master bedroom with comfortable sitting area also has an uninterrupted view.

The large galley style kitchen in muted grey features a stunning black granite bench top with Jan’s signature red introduced through kitchen accessories and soft furnishings. “This is where Graeme and I, and sometimes the whole family, grand kids and all, sit around while a meal is being prepared.” “Graeme is the cook so we tend to sit here for meals, particularly this time of year. It is a very liveable space,” Jan says. Again red has been chosen for the more formal dining chairs and gives the home a warm and inviting feel.

Garden and kitchen lessons are integrated into the school curriculum but this project reaches deliberately into the wider community to encourage others to participate in the wholesome environment. It is all about connecting children with the land, to help them understand what it is to nurture the soil and the seeds they plant in it, to live sustainably, and to take responsibility for their own physical wellbeing, but

Principal, Valda Dickens, planted the seed for the garden with the school council who have taken on the program with great enthusiasm. Led by parent and project co-ordinator, Leiticia Harmer, the school secured funding last October and since then has constructed a vegetable garden, installed a commercial style kitchen, hired a kitchen and garden specialist and integrated activities into the school curriculum. The program essentially targets Years 3 to 6 but Dookie, a school of 29, offers the experience to all students. The prep children, like their older fellow students, are taught how to plant seeds and seedlings, nurture them, harvest them when ready and prepare a meal to share.

As a natural bi-product of rice cultivation practices, rice straw is a clean and green alternative to traditional straw mulches. Unlike conventional mulch, rice straw doesn’t thatch or form a crust, which means that water is able to easily penetrate through. This has been a great advantage to orchardists who have found that traditional straw products pose problems with water runoff and weeds. Not only does rice straw offer a superior rate of water absorption, it also takes two to three years to break down (depending on layer thickness), and virtually eliminates ground weeds.

What’s more, its dense

structure performs well in windy areas, where lighter products are prone to blowing away. Ashley says that home gardening enthusiasts have had “great success with it around Mornington and Ballarat, both of which are notoriously windy areas.” In instances where pea straw and sugar cane are used, Aussie Rice Straw provides an ideal top coat by protecting the lighter products from the elements. The straw also comes with a number of environmental advantages. Given the quantity and quality of straw produced from a standard rice harvest, rice straw has been typically burned in the field. And of course the chook manure is essential for nutrient in the ground. No chemical sprays or soil boosters are used. After two months the dome is moved to the next circle where the chooks will do their good work all over again. The bed just released from the chooks is raked, some mulch is added and most of the vegetables will self seed, or Anne adds seedlings for variety. The whole garden is in a pattern to make the most of sun light and keeping beds moist encourages worms to migrate from circle to circle to assist with the natural preservation of the soil.

The kitchen, according to Leah, is a work in progress. It has been added onto the original house and features free standing timber pieces, a butcher’s block and a painted concrete floor that “is so easy to keep clean” and again is a way to add colour to the room. The painted concrete floor is extended out to a walkway and bathroom, but here Leah has spent hours hand painting the ancient Buddhist tree, the Bodhi tree, and created a border of dots to add interest to the back of the house. The rich orange and purples on both the walls and silk curtains in the bathroom and small laundry are breathtaking while pinks, purples and orange also feature in the Indian inspired torans over the office and back bedroom doors. In India they indicate good luck and celebration. “My house is a celebration all year,” Leah laughs.

A treasure trove for booklovers Kenneth Hince old & Fine books

It is amazing what can be found in the charming rural towns of our region, a treasure here, a quirky garden piece there, but the most pleasant surprises on these trips can be the people you meet . This is exactly what happened when we visited Euroa for this edition of Homescape. During our endeavour to get to know some of the locals we were steered into the Euroa Fine Books store where we had the pleasure of speaking with Mr Kenneth Hince. His small and somewhat crowded book store has been his place of business for some years now, after choosing to move with his wife from Melbourne for a quieter pace of life in Euroa. The book store owner is surrounded by a collection of rare books which has a limited off street audience but books, and music, are his first love. Kenneth has recently received an award for his 50 years of book sourcing and selling and is an Order of Australia medal recipient for his work as a classical music critic for more than 30 years.

Plasma’s generate the picture and light in the panel itself, so if the screen is showing a dark picture the individual cells are emitting very little light, whereas, a full white picture uses high energy levels.

Debbie who lives in shepparton has been a diabetic for 43 years and was diagnosed six weeks after undergoing a hole in the heart surgery when she was nine. “In 1966 I clearly remember the first of my daily injections and i thought the syringe was about three inches long! in those days the needles and the syringes had to be stored in mentholated spirits and my meals would have been a challenge for my mother. i was always encouraged to play sport which i did. i married when i was eighteen and a half and had two beautiful children. i have kept good health and these days i have an insulin infusion pump which regulates the infusion of my insulin requirements and allowed me much more flexibility on a daily basis” Also extolling the benefits of the syringe pump she now uses Jana Cronin recalled how difficult it was fifteen years ago when as a twelve year old she was diagnosed with diabetes. “It was difficult being a teenager and feeling “different” she said. but attending a camp for kids with diabetes was a life changing experience for me. i think my siblings liked it also because they could have some food treats which were denied to them when i was around!” Jana who is expecting twins says that whilst the pump is only suitable for type one diabetics who use a short acting insulin, it has certainly transformed
