Louise Dobson

M I N S

LOUISE DOBSON, Former Shepparton Olympic hockey player and Business Manager for Nuby Australia. Nuby is the world leader in care and feeding products for infants.

Your journey must be a dream come true?

W I T H . . .

For me, since retiring, I have really had to look at the overall experience of the 10 years of being in the Australian team and the achievements, experiences and life lessons that I walked away with over such a long campaign, as opposed to reflecting on the final result at the Athens Olympics. The whole journey from the highest to the very lowest point has been an experience that as a kid is something you only dream about. I am so grateful that I have been given the chance to really live out that dream.

What is life after hockey like? I don’t have any involvement in hockey these days but in the lead up to the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games I was involved in the Sports and Technical committee with M2006 as an athletes representative. I thoroughly enjoyed the six year experience where we made decisions on anything that involved the athletes, from the athletes village, medal designs and events. During the Commonwealth Games I was a women’s hockey commentator for Channel 9 and worked with Australia Post on their corporate program, which I absolutely loved.

Business Manager & Former Olympic Hockeyroo You started playing hockey in Shepparton and have achieved the highest level of success. What are the highlights? Olympic Gold in Atlanta in 1996 with the Hockeyroos was amazing. Having family and friends there also was such a special part of that achievement. The other highlight would have to be winning the Commonwealth Games Gold Medal in 1998. It was the first time hockey had been included in the Commonwealth Games and to be part of the first winning team was very special.

What do you do for relaxation? Relaxation….what is that? I have to admit being able to sit still for a period of time is not a great strength of mine! My role with Nuby keeps me busy and also involves a fair amount of travel. When I am around home, I love getting down to the beach at Sorrento and also catching up with friends and family in Shepparton and Melbourne.

Can you share the low moments as well? Missing out on selection for the Sydney Olympics was one of the toughest things I have had to go through. The team had really taken their ability and depths to another level by the time the Sydney Olympics came around and unfortunately for a couple of us, we were left out of the final mix. Having to break the news to my parents was not a great time, considering they had booked their accommodation five years out from the Olympics. (Louise did make it to Athens as vice captain if the Australian team where they came 5th).

Did you make a New Year’s resolution? I am not a huge fan for a New Year’s resolution as you tend to know when the time is right to do something that matters to you, as opposed to working towards a date. I am definitely going to make a point of seeing the people that matter to me, on a much more regular basis during 2008, so maybe that can be my goal for 2008!

Foodie File: Sweets that tempt: A whole range of sweets to tempt the tastebuds. Availble at Echuca Heritage Sweet Company, Echuca.

The Monichino Family estate is a winery highly regarded for its award winning vintages. The vineyard was founded in 1962 by Carlo Monichino and his wife Margaret after arriving in Australia from northern Italy in 1948. Carlo, who is still active on the estate, recognised the winegrowing potential of the local area and set about building the family estate. Today the winery is run by chief winemaker, Terry Monichino, and his sister Anna. Terry has studied oenology at Charles Sturt University and furthered his viticulture education by visiting wineries in Italy and France and spending a season working at a winery in California’s Napa Valley. The high quality of the grapes produced by Monichino vineyard’s 35 hectares of low-yielding wines is enhanced by heavy pruning and a light supplementary watering. Soil type and climate of the local area provide the “terroir” (the natural environment of any viticultural site) which, together with an experienced team of winemakers, is creating premium wines of full bodied aroma and richness. W i n e r y

Up until recently the estate’s winemaking team has made wines only from the types of grapes traditionally used in Australia. They have now extended the range by creating new varietals from traditional Italian grape categories such as Barbera, Sangioves and Rosso Dolce. Terry has also initiated a winemaker’s exchange program and enlists young European winemakers to help with each vintage.

T r a i l

Monichinos distributes its wines to leading restaurants in both Melbourne and Sydney and has a wide following on the local tourism trail at Echuca, Yarrawonga and in leading provincial cities such as Shepparton and Bendigo. Through the extensive mail order service, the family is building a niche market of dedicated wine lovers Australia wide.

Testament to the high regard Numurkah’s Monichino Wines is held in the industry, the family run business has recently taken out another Excellence in Tourism and Hospitality accolade. Monichino’s is known throughout Australia for producing high quality, award winning wines but it has also built an enviable reputation as a destination for tourists and locals. The vineyard is in the heart of the fertile Goulburn Valley wine growing region, close to the Murray River, and offers visitors a chance to try a range of premium wines and enjoy a tasty platter of local cheeses and home made antipasto. Like the wines, the food served at Monichino’s has a real injection of the family’s Italian heritage. Cuisine by Francesca served in the winery’s function room and at its many events is legendary.

Back in Business When the Echuca Heritage Sweet Company in High Street Echuca burnt down earlier this year it made headline news across Australia. Miraculously, the shop’s famous giant lollipop was one of the few surviving items. So loved is the shop, the owners, Heather and Ken Wells, were overwhelmed by messages of support from around Australia and overseas. Now one of Echuca’s favourite family destinations has been rebuilt, using bricks from the old building. Pine-lined ceilings and a replica of the original skylight recreate much of the heritage atmosphere. The shop’s many regular customers will be pleased that the train and the giant lollipop are both back on display. Shelves are chock-a-block with sweet offerings such as fudge, licorice, mango drops and guilt-free sugarless lollies, with some fabulous Easter treats arriving in February. Alternatively, check out the tasty titbits in the “naughty section! [hs]

Sheryl and Bruce Anderson chose a houseboat honeymoon and were thrilled with their decision. “It was more like living in a five star penthouse than on a boat. The furniture, fittings and floral arrangements just ooze luxury,” says Bruce. “It took us back to another era of romance, exploration and adventure. When time came to shut out the world we could watch onboard movies or retreat to any of the four queen size bedrooms, each with its own ensuite and large doors opening onto a surrounding board walk.” Sheryl and Bruce hired the Indulgence from Murray River Houseboats, whose owners, Ken and Julie Montgomery, also fell in love with the Murray when they started coming to Echuca on holidays. Like many others Ken and Julie made an inland sea change, moving here in 2004. Ken was formerly CEO of North Melbourne football club, having played fourteen seasons with the Kangaroos. A highlight of his career was winning against Collingwood in the 1977 grand final. Julie was Victorian Sales Manager for Family Circle magazine.

The couple has no regrets about leaving the city. “We wouldn’t go back for anything,” comments Julie before she greets an enthusiastic group of eight, surrounded by piled high boxes of food and wine, who’ve hired a houseboat for their annual get-together.

Each year

they try one of the different companies renting boats in the area. They love the relaxed pace and lack of time schedules. By holidaying locally they avoid the stress of travel and pack more into their week off work. The nightly accommodation cost per couple is probably less than for an average motel room. On board the couples load their gourmet goodies into the huge fridge and start the sound system. Someone finds the cupboard containing the glasses whilst the rest explore the architect-designed interior of the boat. As champagne is poured at the bar the friends spread themselves around the large living room. Unlike the Andersons, who have booked the Indulgence again for their first wedding anniversary, this group is looking to party. The upstairs deck with its BBQ and 10 person spa is perfect for this.

Aptly named, these houseboats are pure indulgence. Julie’s attention to detail and pride in presentation is evident throughout, from the cutting edge design to the crisp white sheets and 40 fluffy towels stacked neatly in the cupboard. Guests only need to bring toiletries, clothing and basic food items. Murray River houseboats are moored in central Echuca so you can pull in for the night and stroll to one of the many restaurants around the historic port. Alternatively cruise to one of the nearby wineries or let Julie organize caterers to provide your own private dinner party on a quiet beach. [hs]

Aquamoves Redevelopment After years of successfully giving many clients a fitness makeover, Shepparton’s Aquamoves has recently undergone its own physical transformation. The $1.3 million facelift has doubled the gym and cardio exercise floor space and a new cardio platform, with state of the art equipment, has been designed to overlook nearby Lake Victoria. There are two new group fitness studios big enough to hold a master class of 70 participants and the roomier RPM studio now has more bikes to cater for demand for the popular classes. With more than 80 classes on the timetable there is plenty of choice for everyone. The redevelopment has incorporated a specially designed circuit room with cardio equipment and hydraulics strength machines for an effective total body workout - great for people that have time constraints or people that have never worked out in a gym before. Health and Wellbeing Coordinator, Diana Gibson, says the hundreds of users will benefit from the spacious new look gymnasium which provides a standard of facilities equal to any gym in Victoria.

Personal trainer, Laura Veal, says she is very excited about her new studio work space - a specially equipped room to create a more personal and individualised environment for clients. The studio is exclusive to personal training clients who opt for the one on one sessions or small groups. “With a trend toward people wanting individual assistance with their fitness and weight loss the new facilities means we can offer each client a totally personal program in a private environment,” Laura says. One of a team of personal trainers at Aquamoves, Laura works with the rest of the team to develop an individual program which gives great results. Some of her clients have lost up to 18 kgs in 6 months, triathletes are maintaining peak fitness due to her workouts and Laura has also assisted with injury rehabilitation and strength training with some amazing results. “Working with people to achieve their goals is very satisfying. We keep them motivated and on track to reach their goal and it is a great feeling when you see the results of all their hard work.”

“Hey you on the couch...

...we’ve changed our name”

It’s no secret that the Australian backyard has become more like a holiday destination than a place for the clothesline and garbage bins. Swimming pools, games rooms, tennis courts, outdoor theatres, barbecue kitchens and children’s playgrounds are the norm in many backyards these days catering for the whole family. Shepparton builder, Glenn Rikys has witnessed first hand the trend to incorporate complete indoor/outdoor living spaces in new homes and renovations and has embraced the ideal in his own home. His six year old 60 square home boasts all the modern luxuries of the 21st Century, creating living spaces indoor and out, designed specifically for his young family.

A curved tinted glass wall with double glass doors in black aluminium dominates the back of the home and opens directly onto a large undercover patio and swimming pool. This is the view from the front entrance which boasts a large entry and step up into the open plan kitchen, dining and lounge areas. By day the tinted glass is an alternative to window dressing which would interrupt the view to the backyard and by night lighting transforms the area into an entertainers paradise. The bar, billiard room, gym and home theatre also have direct access onto the easy care patio finished in exposed aggregate and edged with low maintenance hedging and palms for a tropical feel. A large lawned area, a children’s playground and full size fenced tennis court gives the whole family plenty of options for play and exercise, and of course entertaining, which Glenn says is a favorite pastime. The outdoor kitchen has a large barbecue, fridge and storage and is close to the bar and wide screen home theatre for 10 people creating a perfect space for family parties or a get together with friends. “These days it is practice to have the outdoor area under the existing roofline, not an add on like in the past, and it is actually an economical way to do it with less upkeep, “Glenn says. “We use this outdoor space nearly all year, it is definitely a lifestyle choice.”

The transition from indoors to outdoors is seemless in this in this well designed home

TraveL Adventure Brown Skuas are always present, scavenging for any leftover morsel and as we head around the bay we stop to watch Albatross sitting on the water feeding as South Georgia Shags fly past in formation overhead, and the curious seals keep an eye on the visitors.

Discover Antarctica

Stepping ashore at Prion Island we are greeted by some very hostile yet playful Fur Seals. We manage to weave our way up the beach and climb the small hill to get our first glimpse of Wandering Albatross nesting. These graceful birds have a wingspan of 3 meters. On the way down to the waiting zodiacs we were serenaded by the moans and groans of the seals – were they asking us to stay a bit longer? – Oh how we wish we could. Arriving at Salisbury Plain, the home of about 100,000 plus King Penguins, I could hardy contain my excitement, a sight that will never be erased from my mind - a stunning landscape of snowcapped peaks, a crescent shaped beach cluttered with Fur and Elephant Seals

several large fur seals guarding their beach, tiny baby seals crawl around us not afraid to come and say hello. As we were taking off our life jackets and getting prepared for our walk up through the tussock grass to see the nesting Macaroni Penguins, two large fur seals having an argument between themselves, suddenly came thundering down the hill towards us, brushing our legs as they land on the beach in front of us, quite an experience – we think they are the welcoming party!! The Macaroni’s are instantly recognizable by the orange crest above its eyes and watching them they look at you as if to say “I wonder what type of Penguin you are?” On the way back to the ship two icebergs that look like giant shoes appear out of the mist, so of course we divert and go around them to have a closer look at these beautiful sculptures.

The Nagambie lakes Leisure Park stands true to its name, having been developed specifically with the leisure seeker in mind, the appeal is in the diversity of that leisure! Read a book as you relax under the shade of an old river red gum, have a game of tennis, or swim in the pool, row on the magnificent lake, grab a bite to eat in the first class café or fire up the BBQ, take a short drive to one of the many wineries or explore the local villages and their many rustic attractions. The possibilities are endless. Importantly, the NEW Nagambie Lakes Leisure Park is about 40 minutes south of Shepparton and when you arrive you have the choice of luxury cabins on the river bank, ensuite and powered caravan sites or camping areas…. Picture yourself watching the mist rise off the lake as dawn breaks, or the magnificent colours as the sun sets. For a region renowned for its laidback, genteel and rustic style, the number of local activities for visitors are numerous to say the very least. Nagambie Lakes is reputed far and wide for its food and wine, the latter sourced from a large number of wineries… mostly situated within a grape’s throw of Nagambie. This is definitely an area that rewards “explorers”; follow your nose and visit many of the small villages where you can stumble upon old pubs, beautiful gardens, art galleries, museums, antique shops and a host of other treasures.

Nature walks are something else as well with marvelous sights to behold in the wetlands… wildlife galore and picnic areas to adore. For those who want to see Nagambie Lakes from a different angle, sky diving and gliding is yet another option. Naturally enough, for those who choose to spend their time on or by the lake, fishing, water, skiing, sailing, rowing and canoeing are all popular pursuits. The thing that strikes you most about the Nagambie Lakes region is its accessibility to Melbourne – just 80 minutes from go to whoa. Hardly time for a single “Are we there yet?”

Nagambie is the heart of the Nagambie lakes region, extending along the Hume Freeway from Avenel to Longwood and following the Goulburn Valley Highway and the historic Goulburn Weir. As you reach the Nagambie Lakes region you will pass a number of famous wineries – landmarking them for subsequent viticultural research – while other magnificent natural attractions such as rivers, lakes and wetlands loom large. You will find that you’re asking yourself how this jewel in Victoria’s crown can be so close to the hustle and bustle of regional cities. [hs]

wealth Finance Conveyancing made simple Once you are considering buying or selling property, you will need to understand about conveyancing. In simple terms, conveyancing is collecting various documents to show the property is acceptable for the purpose and ensuring that settlement occurs as it should.

Is it necessary? Conveyancing is essential. You can’t legally transfer a property without getting the conveyancing done. It involves government bodies such as the road authority (to make sure no roads are planned across the property), water authority (to determine easements and flood risks) and the Lands department to ensure the land is free to be sold.

For help buying your home, start by talking with a local.

available to aid this process.

However, if there are any problems, you may find yourself out of your depth. Using a professional conveyancer or legal firm means that experienced people will collect the documents and know what to do with any problems in the documents. The settlement adjustments are often dealt with better by a conveyancer as they are less emotionally involved in the sale.

What does it cost? For each of the documents you need to collect, there will be a charge. These charges vary between states and departments, but you can expect to pay from $6 to $20 per document. Using a conveyancer, you will still pay these charges as well as paying for their professional service.

wealth Finance Some conveyancers charge a set fee for all the conveyancing required, whilst others may charge you by the task or the hour. Ask what they are including in their set price - it may look cheap but if it doesn’t include document fees and attending settlement, it may end up being more expensive. Unless you have a recommendation, a set price for all of the conveyancing is probably the safer option to go with. Although it is an expensive time when you buy or sell property, the cost of a conveyancer is small compared to many of your other expenses. Compared to the time and stress involved in doing your own conveyancing, though, the cost is often a worthwhile investment. [hs]
