Celebrate Monichino’s
vintage history By Debbie Mori
With roots that trace back to the world-famous wine-producing Piemonte region in northern Italy, Katunga’s Monichino family is passionate about its vineyard and the award-winning wines it creates...
Monichino Wines will host an end-of-vintage banquet on Saturday, August 28. Guests will dine among the towering century-old wine barrels while enjoying the rich aromas of past vintages. Anna will select wines from Monichino’s large range of traditional and Italian winegrape varieties to match each of Francesca’s beautiful dishes, made from local produce, while Terry will showcase the estate’s new-release wines. Bookings are essential.

Carlo Monichino, who will celebrate his eightieth birthday this year, was only 18 when he left the breathtaking vista of vines and rolling hills in the Asti province of Piemonte to migrate to Australia The son and grandson of Italian winemakers, Carlo recognised the winegrowing potential of the Goulburn Valley region, and by 1962 had transplanted a little of his history into the fertile earth at Katunga. The vineyard he established with his wife Margaret has become an award-winning tourists’ destination and a popular place to enjoy an authentic Italian food and wine experience. Carlo’s daughter Anna and son Terry have continued their family’s proud winemaking traditions, and although Carlo is still active on the Katunga estate, Terry has taken over from his father as chief winemaker. Terry studied wine oenology at Charles Sturt University and furthered his education by working in a winery in the Napa Valley, California. “We are a small producer of hand-crafted wines and are passionate about the quality of wines we produce,” Anna says. “Our wines are distributed to leading restaurants in Melbourne and Sydney and we have a strong following in our local restaurants.” Anna manages the cellar door at Monichino Wines of Victoria and is in charge of administration. It’s a real family
affair at the Katunga estate; Anna’s nephew Frankie Sergi, who recently returned from working in the Italian winemaking region of Marche, is the assistant winemaker, and his mother Francesca Sergi is the renowned chef who has made Monichino Wines so famous for its exquisite Italian cuisine. Francesca has worked with celebrity chefs Stefano de Pieri and Patrizia Simone. The cellar door, which is open seven days a week, overlooks the vineyard and offers wine tasting, food platters and coffee. Barbecue facilities are available in the picturesque picnic grounds. Monichino Wines also offers a mail-order service. The function room is open for group bookings only. [hs]

After close to two decades playing for AFL club North Melbourne, Anthony Stevens retired to Echuca in 2004, down the road from where his football career began in the Tungamah under 12s. Anthony epitomised the true ‘shin-boner’ spirit of the Kangaroos in his 16 years at the club. Premierships in 1996 and 1999 and being named in the North Melbourne Team of the Century are standouts in a highly decorated career. This unassuming Kangaroo legend also won the club’s best and fairest in 1997 and 1999, captained his team in 2002/03 and donned the ‘big V’ for his state alongside AFL greats Tony Lockett, Gary Ablett and Robert Harvey. Where are you now and what are you up to? I live in Echuca with my family and am owner/operator of an event hire business, Perfect Party Hire. We do events such as weddings, field days, fundraisers, Country Racing Victoria meets and award nights. I am not involved with any footy at the moment but hope to when my little boy River commences playing in a couple of years. I try and get down to Melbourne when I can to watch the Kangaroos play. We are currently travelling around the west of Australia for six months to visit amazing places in the Kimberley Region. Did you have trouble keeping busy once you retired, after full-time football for so many years? When I retired in 2004 my wife, daughter Ayva and I travelled around Australia for three months, which I enjoyed thoroughly. My passion now is building my own business and spending time with my family. What do you miss most about playing in the AFL? The mateship, having a laugh with the boys and challenging myself to play at the elite level in a sport I loved so much. Why is life after football challenging for many AFL players and what would you attribute to your business success following your retirement? Many players do not prepare themselves for life after football. The money that young footballers receive today is quite substantial and a lot do not financially plan for the future. I was always careful with my money, so I tried to invest wisely. I always wanted to own a business and because I have carried my work ethic, willingness to learn from others and dedication towards football for so many years into my business, hopefully I will be comfortable in my lifestyle. Who will win the 2010 AFL Premiership and Brownlow Medal? My tip is St Kilda and the Brownlow Medal, Joel Selwood.

REECE WINNER What makes this bathroom a winner? ✲ IT’S LIGHT AND AIRY WITH PERFECT INDIVIDUAL TOUCHES Congratulations to Penny and Dean Anderson, who won the Reece Your Bathroom Your Life competition. Their gorgeous bathroom renovation was praised by the Reece judges for its calming effect and delicately balanced decorative features. “We are thrilled to win,” says Penny. The couple had long wanted a beautiful, airy, modern bathroom yet achieved it just months ago, during the top-to-toe renovation of their heritage-listed home.
Designed from the heart
And, from tap choice to tiling, the couple chose all the fittings and finishes themselves. Collecting ideas from magazines, Reece showrooms and websites they came up with their dream look: modern, yet referencing the home’s heritage, light-filled with soft organic shapes and most importantly, a view of nature. “We just love the end result, especially the large shower, the natural light and the outlook,” says Penny.
AND THE BEST BATHROOM GOES TO... This Shepparton bathroom captured the imagination of the Reece judges, who praised the way the organic shapes and natural light combine to create a calming atmosphere.

Penny and Dean Anderson have been celebrating their success in the Australiawide Reece Your Bathroom, Your Life Competition announced in June, after a panel of Reece representatives judged their magnificent bathroom as the best entry out of hundreds of hopefuls from around the country. The finishing touches to the couple’s bathroom renovation were literally just completed when Penny decided to enter the competition, which offered a $5000 cash prize. Penny believed she had created a gorgeous room and thought entering the competition “would be a bit of fun”. Each entrant had to submit photos and write 25 words or less on what inspired them to create their bathroom. She was chosen as one of 10 finalists and her bathroom was posted on the Reece website for people to vote on.
Above: The Reece competition panel of judges highlighted Penny’s choice of striking wall tile as a winning feature. It is ‘Venezia’ from Tile Boutique in Shepparton.
“Getting the call that we had won was just amazing. I mean we love our bathroom but we were up against some very nice designs,” Penny says.
The gloss finish on the custom-built vanity, crisp white tiles from floor to ceiling and lime-green accents, such as towels on heated towel rails, all add to the luxe theme.
“It was obvious some of the entries had spent a lot of money on theirs so I wasn’t confident we had all the elements to win. I couldn’t believe it when they called. I asked so many questions about why they chose us.”
The striking metallic patterned tile, Venezia, used to create a feature wall in the large walk-in shower was a favourite with the judges. The unusual tile, purchased at Shepparton’s Tile Boutique, looks like textured wallpaper and was chosen to inject a touch of tradition into the modern interior of the heritage-listed home.
The judges considered overall look and layout, clever design, product selection and use of space. Penny’s use of natural light through a huge north-facing window, a wall of mirror and seamless glass shower screen, from Austview, creates an illusion of space. The free-standing, egg-shaped bath and minimal tap and shower fixtures give the room a polished resort feel.
“I love the idea of having gorgeous things around us but it is still very livable and practical for our family,” Penny says. The bathroom, featured in House & Garden’s July issue, is part of stage two of the Andersons’ renovation and replaces the original kitchen.

Top left: Soft mood lighting and rich timber furniture add warmth to the otherwise minimalist décor. Top right: White and chocolate brown are used to create a modern but practical kitchen in the open-plan home. Above: Small details like candlelight and carved figures are placed perfectly in the more informal living areas.
Penny’s preference for white is reinforced in all rooms on walls, cupboards, bench tops, curtains and even furniture. The home renovator has not been afraid to use white on white, but at the same time has cleverly introduced warmth and texture via timber furniture in the dining and living areas and dark floor coverings, including the chocolate-stained timber in the front entrance complete with in-floor lighting. Many of the larger pieces of furniture in the home are from Empire Trading in Shepparton, while Penny chose her curtains and blinds from The Curtain Room. She has painstakingly chosen all light fittings to help dress each room, as well as provide appropriate mood lighting. In the main bedroom, a king-sized timber bed is the masterpiece, flanked by oversized pendant-shaped wicker light shades which extend purposefully from the ceiling. Strategically-placed large, ornate mirrors in the bedroom and front sitting room continue to create the illusion of space but
are a decorative focal point in an otherwise minimalist décor. The open-plan kitchen, living and dining area at the back of the home was completed in the renovation’s first stage, transforming the dated 1980s interior into a contemporary family space. Here too, attention is paid to detail, with quality Caesarstone in Nougat chosen for bench tops, and chocolate-stained Victorian Ash used under-bench and on cabinetry around the fridge. A wall of glass sliding doors opens onto Merbau decking and the swimming pool, and in the hotter months the family makes the most of indoor-outdoor living. Dean, a qualified builder, was instrumental in the structural design of the home, turning his hand to first demolishing the old living areas and then rebuilding, sometimes from floor up, hanging plaster, sanding surfaces and painting, all, of course, in the colours and fashion that Penny had chosen.

This spectacular interior transformation belies the home’s historical façade. The Andersons, however, have been sympathetic to its era and incorporated many of the home’s period features into the exterior facelift. There is no question this renovation has produced an impressive result, but it is still a work in progress with stage three to be completed – a bathroom upstairs that the couple can’t wait to spend their prize winnings on, and the boys’ bedrooms. Pictures tell Richard’s story BY CHERYL HAMMER
Top: Richard Moran’s coverage of the Iraq War received commendations in one of Australian journalism’s most coveted awards. Above: A young Richard Moran fell in love with camera work at Shepparton’s former GMV 6 television station. Right page Top, right: Richard Moran was among the rescuers who dug, bare-handed, for a small child in the aftermath of Haiti’s devastating earthquake earlier this year. Bottom, right: The story of this little girl’s rescue from under deep rubble made world news.
www.homescape.com.au
A career in the electronic media is often harrowingly demanding. At the other end of the spectrum it can be amazingly rewarding. As former Shepparton TV cameraman, Richard Moran, reveals, it is never ordinary.
As the bloke behind the camera, he is charged with the responsibility of bringing those events to the rest of the world via our televisions, but he has also made the news headlines himself.
At the young age of 44, Richard Moran is an award-winning veteran of 25 years in TV, and he can tell stories that would normally take a much longer lifetime to collect. His career in recording moving pictures for news and current affairs programs has taken him around the world and exposed him to the most extraordinary experiences and events.
Richard spoke to Homescape from the Nine Network studio in Los Angeles, where he is now based. I asked him to recall being involved in the rescue of a young girl from under rubble, two-and-a-half days after the Haiti earthquake.
From political stoushes, civil unrest and outright war in Iraq, to devastating and life-threatening bushfires in Canberra in 2003, floods that inundated New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the more recent Haiti earthquake, Richard has witnessed and documented events that will fill our history books.
Richard was there to film the disaster but says helping save that little girl is a highlight of his career. “We could hear this little girl calling out. It felt like she was just there, close to where we were standing. Deiby, who was our (Nine Network) interpreter, said he would attempt to dig her out and it was taking so long. I decided to put my camera down and help with the rescue; all of us there were so focused on getting her out.
richard moran homescape: home & lifestyle magazine
“It was one of the most memorable things I have ever done. Something positive happened among all that tragedy,” Richard recalls. This was written about him in the international media at the time: “He is the only Australian TV cameraman ever to win the Gold Walkley for journalism but when Richard Moran heard the soft, desperate cry of a baby girl beneath the rubble in Haiti, he put down his camera and started to dig. ‘He was up to his waist, lifting out pieces of concrete,’ says Nine Network reporter Robert Penfold, who was with him.” Richard’s Gold and Silver Walkley Awards came in 2003 for his coverage of the Canberra bushfires. He filmed the firefighting process during the ACT fires, while still managing to help evacuees. It’s the first time a cameraman has been awarded the prestigious journalism accolade. “I ended up in the CFA captain’s fourwheel-drive and was able to film the fire from the front-line, but at the same time we were helping people flee their homes and transporting people who were caught in the fires.” Richard was living in Canberra, working for the Nine Network at the time and was also concerned for his own family and home. “My wife Roselea and daughter Erin were home at the time and had to evacuate. Our house was not lost but many homes around us in our street were. We were very lucky.” The talented newsman has also received a Walkley commendation for his filming of Australian soldiers in Iraq. Richard’s TV career began at Shepparton’s GMV 6 as a 15-year-old after getting a job sound recording on the What’s Doing show. “I think I got the job because the guy who was hiring went to the same Catholic church where I served time as an altar boy. I honestly think this is true,” Richard laughs.

richard moran homescape: home & lifestyle magazine
He moved to working in news when cameraman Gary Goff retired and soon worked his way up to senior cameraman. He has witnessed many changes on the local TV scene with GMV 6 becoming Vic TV and then WIN Television, which is owned by the Nine Network. Richard says he loves his job because of the diversity. “Every day is different. I can be in Iraq one day and at the Oscars the next. The story I covered today was about John Travolta’s wife being pregnant. It’s great.”

Roselea (Thomson) and Richard met in Shepparton as teenagers. They have been married for 25 years and according to Richard, without the support of Roselea, he would not have been able to pursue the career that has taken him around the world. “I feel very lucky to have the job I have and to have the support of my family. I look back with good memories of where I started, filming local events like Carols by Candlelight at the Queens Gardens in Shepparton, to today being at (Barack) Obama’s inauguration. Pay it forward
BY DEBBIE MORI
Shepparton’s Trevor Morris was inspired by one of the saddest times in his life to bless the lives of others in the 10 years since his father Ted died. In the spirit of “paying it forward”, Trevor was so touched by the support his family received from Goulburn Valley Hospice Care during Ted’s final months, that he began the Fruitloop Ride in 2001 to raise funds for the palliative care service.
Participants are set for the start of the annual Fruitloop Ride to help raise funds for GV Hospice Care.
The money raised from the annual cycling event helps Shepparton-based GV Hospice Care to provide free, round-theclock, in-home care and support for the terminally ill and their families.

500 participants, with people travelling from as far away as the Queensland Gold Coast, Sydney and Adelaide to take on one of three challenging routes. Participants choose a 50km, 100km or 180km route, starting and finishing at Princess Park in Shepparton. The two shorter routes are mainly over flat terrain while the 180km ride includes a hill climb through the picturesque Strathbogie Ranges. Registration is $70 for the 50km ride and $90 for the 100km or 180km route.

Trevor, who is the GV Hospice Care Fruitloop Ride Committee chairperson, says anyone can join the ride – it is not a race – to raise much-needed funds, so that the palliative care nurses can continue to provide a 24-hour-a-day service.
Pacific Brands has donated two Malvern Star bicycles to help with the fundraising efforts; one will be auctioned at Friars Café and the other will be a lucky draw
Trevor Morris
“Palliative care is not a nine-to-five job. The nurses are there during the night as well. They helped Mum a lot when Dad was really ill. They are very special people. They rely heavily on fundraising in the region they cover,” Trevor says.
This year’s ride will take place on Sunday, September 12. Australia’s first cyclist to feature in the Tour de France, Phil Anderson, has participated in the last two Fruitloop Rides. Trevor says Phil will be invited to join the ride again this year and to speak at the popular pasta night held at Shepparton’s Friar’s Café on the eve of the cycling event.
prize. [hs] The Fruitloop Ride – so called because the ride takes in Shepparton’s surrounding fruit-growing region, or as Trevor jokes, “People might think you’re a fruitloop if you do the ride!” – raised $32,000 for GV Hospice Care last year.

By Bridgette hall
gap year student
In this second instalment, Shepparton’s Bridgette Hall shares with Homescape readers how she spends a typical Monday as an AFL trainee at St Brendan’s Primary School. Bridgette, a former Notre Dame College student, is completing her traineeship during her gap year. 7.45am: Rise and shine. 8.10am: Breakfast – a glass of juice and one slice of Vegemite on toast. 8.25am: Time for school. Leave my house and trek across the school oval to St Brendan’s. 8.30am: Reading with children who have English as a second language and recording their performance in their reading log. 9am: Meeting time with learning support staff and deputy principal. Here we discuss any problems we may have, information about professional development, duties, rosters, difficulties we may have encountered with students etc.
9.30am: ‘Bluearth’ with the 5/6 class that I work with. Run by one of the program’s coaches, this is a different approach to sport that involves games, stretching and core movement. 10am: Back to the classroom that I have been assigned to. I am required to work as a teacher’s aide with students who have individual learning plans and to offer them support as they complete their work. 11am: Students’ play time. Off to the staff room for a cuppa and a chat. 11.30am-12 :30pm: During this period I am situated in our learning enrichment room. Activities we run here range from cooking, craft, board/card games, puzzles, completing work, downball, reading or simply talking in a group with students of different ages and backgrounds. 12.30pm-1.30pm: Return to my designated classroom to work with various students. 1.40pm: Yard duty on the oval. 2pm: Lunchtime – salad roll from the canteen or sandwich from home.
2.20pm: Into the office. The afternoons are set aside for me and the other AFL trainee to complete our administration work as part of our traineeship. This includes any assignments we may have to complete, organising camps and school sports/excursions, making phone calls, sending out notes for zone/regional sporting trials, auditing sports equipment, notifying children of upcoming events and many more tasks required in order to successfully pass our Certificate 3 in Sport and Recreation. I have also been nominated team manager of the grade six netball squad so this keeps me busy with notes, organising tournaments and training. 3.30pm: Coordinate Active After School Care with another teacher and fellow trainee. This program aims to provide primary school children with the opportunity to participate in physical activities. 4.30pm: Home time!
Top and left: Bridgette Hall enjoys spending time with the children in the classroom and in the playground at St Brendan’s Primary School.

the outdoors, creating a sense of light and space. This is most evident in the ingenious indoor/outdoor area. Many modern homes have expensive dedicated outdoor entertaining areas with fridges, tables and equipment which duplicate items already available inside. These outdoor rooms are often on the north side of the home and their roofline blocks winter sunlight. Not so in this home. This ‘outdoor’ area can be used all year round and is adjacent to the kitchen. Inside it is a sleek vented Top: The outdoor room with views of the bush can be enclosed during the colder months. heating system or a cosy fireplace, with neatly stacked logs creating a beautiful feature on one wall. Another terrific idea is the black steel balcony surrounds which surprisingly don’t impede views and are more practical than glass. The home is full of many other great ideas. Like many couples it suits the Boyles to have a separate study and sitting room for Jim’s use. However, sliding doors can close off this space to form an extra bedroom when the family visits. “The kids love having the computer and TV in their room,” Lyn says. “Living here is as good as you can get for our lifestyle,” she says. “Deniliquin is a good, friendly town. It’s only 10 minutes away if you need anything and we have a lift for taking the shopping upstairs.”

Polished concrete and honed bluestone pavers provide practical but very appealing floor finishes throughout the hallway and bedrooms. “We were over the heritage look and find the home much easier to maintain than the original farmhouse.” In their spare time the couple thoroughly enjoys a dip in the “drinking pool”. This area can also be opened up to the garden in warm weather. Otherwise there’s the option of a hit of tennis on the lawn tennis courts or a game on the four-hole golf course which surrounds the home! [hs]

Echuca Wonderland You will often find Elaine Roberts sharing a pot of tea with family or friends on her front veranda, enjoying the magical morning sun. Significantly, this is also the best spot to take in the beautiful cottagestyle garden that has been her labour of love for more than 30 years.

When Elaine and husband Russell moved to their now 150-year-old period-style home in Echuca, the garden was barely that – a simple row of camellias, three pine trees, a couple of fruit trees and a basic lawn. Despite being busy with raising four children, it wasn’t long before Elaine began work on the well-established garden we see today. Sections of lawn disappeared periodically to make way for garden beds full of colour and texture, featuring everything from agapanthus and Canna lilies to a magnificent Manchurian pear tree, a stunning snowball tree, irises and many a maybush, to name a few. “And weeds,” Elaine says.
It’s hard to resist following the sandy path.
But it is the imperfection of this town garden and how each section blends with another that gives it its magical Alice in Wonderland effect. It truly is a place where you expect to find fairies at the bottom
of the garden. “Tulloh”, as the property is historically known, welcomes you as you pass under an arbour adorned with budding climbing roses, and you can’t help but follow the sandy path to the favoured front porch, not knowing what you might discover along the way. Despite the garden’s humble beginnings, the well-established magnolia tree in the front yard, now close to 50 years old, was a hint of things to come for Elaine and Russell. An elm tree was placed in the middle of the front lawn when they began planting and it now stands pride of place as the overseer of the entire front garden. It is the true hero of the garden, especially during late autumn when it shows off its striking yellow leaves before giving in to its winter nakedness. However, this imposing elm has not been without its problems. The troublesome elm leaf beetle caused Elaine

Elaine’s garden is well recognised and many locals use the mighty elm as an indicator of seasonal changes, often more accurate than a calendar. Children regularly stop as they walk past, peering into the garden with wonderment, Elaine says.
Elaine’s garden is still a work in progress, with new infrastructure and the re-establishment of backyard plants on the agenda.
Children often peer into Elaine’s yard to see what she has on display.

Building an eco-friendly empire The trend towards eco-friendly products and a personal desire to have minimum impact on the environment keeps Empire Trading owner, Lesa Hall, busy travelling overseas to source recycled and ecologically-sustainable timber products to sell in her Shepparton superstore. Lesa also buys stock items that are handmade by traditional craftsmen whenever possible. “More and more people are conscious of buying eco-friendly products so we use recycled timber where possible,” she says. The environmental angle doesn’t stop there; Lesa financially contributes to a tree-planting program associated with containers of furniture she buys from selected suppliers in Indonesia. She also encourages the use of recycled timbers in the various other countries she visits to choose new furniture ranges. Empire Trading’s exquisite furniture collection includes pieces made of recycled and reclaimed teak, elm, oak, pine and fruitwood, along with ecologically-sustainable plantation mahogany. From the rustic to the ornate, there’s something to suit everyone, and Lesa makes an effort to choose pieces that reflect the varying tastes of the Goulburn Valley’s cultural mix. Her collection includes provincial French farmhouse pieces, elegant polished mahogany, rustic pine and European-designed contemporary recycled teak as well as Australian-made products. There are vases, handmade pots, prints, lamps, cushions, candles, magazine racks and more among her attractive array of homewares. Lesa also sells world-renowned Bayliss rugs in various designs and textures. Lesa established Empire Trading in a 300 square metre store in High St, Shepparton 12 years ago. Today she welcomes customers from as far south as Melbourne and north into New South Wales to her 2500 square metre superstore. Lesa’s partner Geoff Shiell introduced her to the furniture trade when she owned a florist’s shop in Bendigo. She began selling pieces of furniture in her shop and recognised the potential in establishing a furniture store in her home town of Shepparton. Lesa says Geoff’s contacts in the furniture

Thirty-three-year-old Pip Cowan is testament to that. Born and bred in Numurkah, he is adamant he wouldn’t live anywhere else right now. The young man has turned his energies to contributing to his community, taking on an organiser’s role in the town’s highly successful Food Bowl Music Festival, and spreading the word on what a great place Numurkah is. Pip’s story is a little different. He has been confined to a wheelchair since a motorbike accident when he was 17, but like all young people, Pip felt he needed
to fly the coop to live and work elsewhere. After some time in Brisbane, he decided he preferred the comfort and ease of living in this small community. “I felt a bit like a duck out of water in the big smoke. It is nowhere as friendly and I just found I was missing the village feel of home. I definitely have a sense of place here, and because of that, I like to feel I am contributing to the town that looks after me,” Pip says.

Pip can often be found at the local community learning centre teaching computers, or at local schools sharing inspirational words with teenage students or helping younger students with reading and sports days.
Numurkah is part of the Moira shire between shepparton and Cobram and boasts more sunshine throughout the year than Queensland, a bragging right that fits beautifully with the shire’s sun Murray Country campaign.
“The town’s new slogan is ‘Love our Lifestyle’ and I guess that sums it up for me,” Pip says.
A large timeshare resort, on the outskirts of town, is instrumental in attracting many holiday-makers to the area, as is its proximity to the Murray river.

Community Leaders Bendigo Bank Branch Manager, Lisa Liddell, outlines how customers can help community thrive. With a view to becoming an integral part of the Numurkah community, they moved into newly built premises on 28/9/09. The branch now boasts 6 staff with an ATM installed. In line with their commitment to reward the local community, a round of community grants were held Jan 2010 and over $12,000 was handed out. Information night for next round will be 14/7/10. Numurkah Caravan Park manager, Terry Harbor, has also returned to Numurkah, from Melbourne. Terry has joined his parents in the family business and has helped rebuild the park to its former glory on the picturesque Broken Creek. The park offers 44 caravan sites – four with ensuites – three cabins and grass areas for camping, and is only a stone’s throw from the main shopping centre. “where else around here could you get absolute water frontage only minutes from town?” Terry laughs. “we have people from the region stay with us just as a quick getaway.” The park was earmarked for demolition before Terry’s parents rescued it and implemented a lot of what they had learnt caravanning around Australia. The park won the Numurkah Business and excellence Award in 2006.

All Aboard For an Alaskan Adventure
By Jock O’Connor
In this edition of Homescape, Shepparton’s Jock and Maureen O’Connor share the final stages of their travels through breathtaking Alaska on the McKinley Explorer bubble train. After our seven-night Alaskan cruise we arrived in Anchorage for an overnight stay. By the way, Anchorage is home to the busiest seaplane airport in the world. The morning after arrival, we boarded the McKinley Explorer bubble train for a twoday journey to Fairbanks. On day one we travelled through some spectacular countryside, arriving at Denali National Park for an overnight stay. The park is home to some 160 species of birds and 37 mammals. We stayed in very cosy log cabins and set off on a sixhour sightseeing tour of the national park the next morning. We took off at 5am and travelled through the park in old coaches (I think they got them off the set of the TV show MASH). The horizontally-operated windows were difficult to use and when it came to taking photos, sometimes we missed the shot, however at the end of the trip the driver was selling a video she had taken along the way. We did see some wildlife – some were close by, but the bears were that far away they could have been men in bear suits! However, the clear morning sky did make for great photo opportunities of nearby Mt McKinley.

The park operators are very environmentally conscious; we were not allowed to eat or drink coffee outside the bus. Apparently, if we had spilled food or liquid on or near the road, the animals with a highly-sensitive sense of smell might come close to the road to investigate a possible cheap feed. Personally, I thought the closer the animal the better the photo. That afternoon we boarded the bubble train again to continue the journey to Fairbanks. The rail trip can only be described as spectacular; we were sitting on the higher deck, travelling at treetop height, some four metres above the ground. This made for great sightseeing, good commentary and fantastic photo opportunities. We arrived at Fairbanks just on dark. We stayed overnight and took a riverboat cruise on the Chena River the next morning. It was amazing to learn that within three months, light planes would fit skis to land on the same river, as it would freeze solid to a depth of 1.2 metres. After our second night in Fairbanks we organised a visit to Santa’s house – an
operation that is open all year-round and has a magnificent display of Christmas fittings. For a small fee you can send the grandkids a personal letter from the old red-suited fat fella (not me!). We thought this was great because it gave us a warm and fuzzy feeling to have the grandkids get something out of our holiday. The next day we boarded a late flight home via Seattle, arriving some 24 hours later. [hs]
In the next edition of Homescape, read about our visit to Vietnam and Cambodia, and how we were pickpocketed just five hours after our arrival!

Once again our tasting panel was put to work matching a wine to savour with this dish.

Brysons pick: Majella Sparking Shiraz - a spicy Coonawarra great to match the spicy continental sausage
The melt in your mouth feel of the beans and pork go with this full buttery chardonnay. Tims pick: Plunkett Fowles Riesling - but it has to have 5 years on it! I think the point we’re trying to make here is that it all comes down to personal taste!
Enjoy!
