2013 festival image: turtles walking on land

The 2013 SheppARTon Festival theme is Emerging Voices. This theme pays tribute to the traditional custodians of the Goulburn Valley through a story of a Long-necked Turtle, a creature of perseverance and a totem of the Yorta Yorta Aboriginal Nation.

Long-necked Turtles are a totem/symbol of artist, Ross A. Morgan’s clan group/tribe, the Yorta Yorta. This animal is protected and can’t be eaten by tribe members.

The turtle also represents a welcoming spirit to immigrants and refugees who have travelled with their homes on their backs, to emerge in the Goulburn Valley with a free voice.

The turtles in the painting represent Ross’ ancestors now in the dreamtime. Ross’ painting will be on display at La Trobe University as part of an exhibition of his work and is for sale by silent auction during the term of the festival. To place a bid on the image, either place a bid in the ‘Bid Box’ accompanying the painting or email johnh@mcmedia.com.au with your offer. Bids will be accepted up until the evening of Monday 11 March and the winning bid will be announced at the Opera in the Orchard. (No correspondence will be entered in to.)

Our team of enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers have put together an eclectic and exciting variety of events to provide something for everyone over the eleven days of the festival. Some events are old favourites like the Literary Lunch and Opera in the Orchards; while innovative new events like The Dookie Community Performance celebrate the unique landscape we are so lucky to have at our doorstep. Personally one of the best parts about living in Shepparton is the cultural diversity we are privileged to be part of. The SheppARTon Festival gives a voice to the different groups in our community and through the inclusion of Multicultural Arts Victoriaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Emerge on the Goulburn Festival: Emerge at Twilight Festival within the festival program; this will be showcased even further. This one day workshop introduces novice filmmakers to the complete process of digital filmmaking. This is an exhibition of art by the painter of the 2013 festival theme image, local indigenous artist Ross Morgan. His painting, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Turtles Walking on Landâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; is also on display as part of the exhibition and offers the opportunity for festival patrons to purchase the work by silent auction. This exhibition will be opened by John Head, the SheppARTon Festival Artistic Director and include an overview of the Emerging Voices theme and highlights of festival program events. These lantern making workshops are designed to give children a chance to make paper mache lanterns for the Emerging Voices Community Performance. These workshops encourage children to learn about and participate in the festivalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Emerging Voices theme. The lanterns will be made using balloons, tape, PVA glue, cardboard, grease-proof paper and battery powered candles. They will then be decorated using local indigenous words and words in different languages to represent the welcoming spirit of the Emerging Voices theme. Children present at the workshops will also be encouraged to participate in a lantern parade as part of the Emerging Voices Community Performance on the evening of Saturday 9 March at a free BYO picnic with live entertainment at the Tallis Winery Dookie. All details of the performance will be available at the workshops. Please note: These workshops are suitable for children of all abilities aged 6-16 and include all materials. It is recommended participants wear a smock or clothing suitable for working with glue and paint. Children may keep the lanterns at the conclusion of the performance on the Saturday night. The Choir of Hope and Inspiration (formerly known as the Choir of Hard Knocks) began rehearsing in September 2006 under the leadership of Founding Music Director, Dr Jonathon Welch AM. Jonathon established the Choir upon his return to Melbourne, having previously created the Sydney Street Choir in 2001. That choir still performs regularly, with Jonathon now as Patron. Created specifically for people experiencing homelessness and disadvantage, Jonathon’s original inspiration for creating such Choirs came from reading an article about the Montreal Homeless Men’s Choir whilst in Canada. Jonathon’s talent and passion for music, as a musician and professional opera singer, his teaching work, and his tireless efforts in creating music projects for the indigent, and for the disadvantaged, have recently been recognised with an Order of Australia, and the award of Australian of the Year: Local Hero, in 2008. The Choir is enormously proud of the Logie Award they received for the Most Outstanding Factual Documentary TV Series in 2007 (for the ABC Choir of Hard Knocks documentary). The Choir has also received ARIA awards for Best TV Soundtrack, a Platinum ARIA award for their first CD “Songs from the TV Series” and a Gold ARIA award for their second CD “Songs of Hope and Inspiration”.

This exhibition is drawn from the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, one of the most significant collections of Japanese prints in the world. Focusing on what is known as the golden age of nishiki-e colour prints, the Tenmei and Kansei eras (1781-1801), it showcases 100 ukiyo-e prints and offers a rare opportunity for visitors to appreciate the gorgeous colour aesthetic that is the essence of nishiki-e, or ukiyo-e printed in multiple colours. The exhibition focuses on the art of three master printmakers who were key innovators in the medium: Torii Kiyonaga, Kitagawa Utamaro and Toshusai Sharaku. At the time they were produced, the images were considered to be crude and unsophisticated, and for popular consumption. The superficial world of beauty and entertainment, of the pleasure quarter and the theatre were considered to be both remote from everyday life and not appropriate subjects for art. However the art form rose to great popularity in the metropolitan culture of Tokyo during the second half of the 17th century and has had a powerful and enduring influence on Western art. Included in the exhibition is also a showcase of works from SAM’s own collection, looking at the influence of Japan on Australian ceramics, titled Crawling Through Mud.

Cameron Lowe is a sometimes surfer, a plasterer by trade and a sometimes young poet from Geelong. His poetry talks about life in the Australian suburbs, the delicacy of flowers and dragonflies, music, sausages cooking in backyards, sweet seductions and shadows on bedroom walls. He has edited poetry magazines and his work has frequently appeared in Meanjin, Southerly, The Age and other publications. His 2010 book Porch Music contains poetry “at once engagingly familiar and enticingly rich and strange”. Cameron is currently teaching poetry as a postgraduate student at Melbourne University. This year, our poetry event moves to Sunday at The Vault with a relaxed mid-morning feel. Cameron Lowe is sure to present a fresh, young look at Australian poetry now.

The Filmmakers’ morning starts with a two hour forum led by a panel of experienced filmmakers from Open Channel. The forum, from 10am - 12noon will watch and discuss a selection of films and television productions to dissect what makes them entertaining. Filmmakers can learn about some of the pitfalls of making early career productions with an emphasis on improving skills in story telling for the screen. The Forum is then followed by a Filmmakers’ Lunch at 12noon, where filmmakers can network with the panel and other filmmakers and view screenings of successful short productions or films made during the Open Channel Guerilla Filmmaker Bootcamp. This workshop is designed to cater for all ages and levels from the beginner (even if you have never played before) to the more advanced. After the workshop show off your talents at the Lakey Ukulele Performance from 6.30pm at Victoria Park Lake. The Ukulele workshop group will wow us with what they have learnt earlier in the afternoon. Di and her Ukulele players will then present a selection of zany and fun Ukulele music that will have you tapping your foot and singing along. Open to all ages and abilities. Families gather on picnic rugs spread out on the grass and enjoy a film under the stars. This year the SheppARTon Festival is delighted to present a majestic Disney animation classic, Beauty and the Beast. Poor but beautiful Belle lives with her inventor father Maurice in a small provincial French town. Belle is considered eccentric by most of the townsfolk, since sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more interested in reading books than in the attentions of her would-be suitor, the handsome but conceited Gaston. While travelling through the woods one night, Maurice is taken prisoner in the castle of the mysterious Beast who is secretly under a spell that will only be broken when a woman falls in love with him. When Belle travels to the castle in search of her father, the Beast agrees to release Maurice only if Belle will become his prisoner forever. Victoria Park Lake is a stunning backdrop for this family event, which forms part of the Summer Film Festival in conjunction with Greater Shepparton City Council.
