The little guide to

A country village with metropolitan style

Hello, I’m Amy It’s a pleasure to meet you.

Welcome to Greytown Greytown is a beautiful place to visit and an amazing place to live! My husband Steven and I made the move to Greytown in 2010. At the time we were expecting our first child and living in Wellington. Increasingly, we found ourselves escaping the city and we fell in love with Greytown (it’s hard not to!). Fast forward six years and we haven’t looked back. Steven commutes to Wellington by train, Florence attends Greytown School and I’m working in real estate for Property Brokers. Greytown really does provide the ultimate in living for the whole family. I hope more people discover Greytown’s magic - a real sense of community, quality amenities, glorious summers and wonderful people make it a truly special place to live. This guide will provide you with all the information you need to choose Greytown as a place to call home. AMY BAILEY 021 066 8080 0800 668 080 amyb@propertybrokers.co.nz

Welcome to our village Villages don’t get much prettier than Greytown - home to New Zealand’s most complete main street of Victorian wooden buildings. Historic Greytown was New Zealand’s first planned inland town. It was established in 1854 by settlers from Wellington who were looking for small, affordable portions of land to farm. In recent years Greytown has seen an increase in popularity as a place to live. Many young families, professionals and retirees have fallen in love with what our unique village has to offer and have made it their home.

Stepping back into Greytown’s rich history Annabelle O’Meara What’s your involvement with Cobblestones? When I first visited Cobblestones I was hooked. I loved all the stories behind the historic buildings and the whole feel of the place. I wanted to be part of it so when I had more time, I signed up as a volunteer. Cobblestones is run completely by volunteers – a great group of people with a fantastic range of skills. People offer as much time as they can; it’s a great way to be part of the Greytown community. What role does Cobblestones play in Greytown? Everybody knows that Greytown has some of New Zealand’s best-preserved Victorian buildings; Cobblestones Museum offers the chance to see what the town was like when it was established in 1854. It brings together a lot of local stories and history in one place. When you visit Cobblestones

Museum, you’re immersed in life in the Wairarapa as it was in the late 19th Century. You can hire Cobblestones for christenings, weddings or fundraising events. It also hosts a number of community events such as the annual Christmas carols. What does Cobblestones mean to its visitors? I have never seen anyone come out of Cobblestones Museum who hasn’t loved their time there. The museum is number 1 on Trip Advisor for Greytown – and a visit will quickly show you why!

The chance to make a difference Jo Parker How did The Good Mood Company come about? I had always dreamed of opening my own business. After years of advising other businesses about marketing, branding and communications, I decided it was time to take the plunge. I’d always loved essential oils and so I developed my own brand. It was only going to be wholesale but the shop has been very successful. Why Greytown for your business? I came to the Wairarapa reluctantly but now I’m a total convert – Greytown especially. Greytown is thriving and the ‘mood’ is contagious!

What’s life like here? I love it. My son, Riley, and I go to the supermarket and we see half a dozen people we know. I love that I know my customers and that the local cafes know what coffee I have before I order it. The local school is great and Riley is very happy. What’s surprised you about Greytown? The Greytown retail businesses work really well together. People are very conscious of not encroaching on anyone else’s territory and everyone is really committed to supporting other local businesses.

A world-class brand rides into town Daryl Watt Pashley is a world-leading brand – why here in Greytown? We think there is a real synchronicity between Pashley and Greytown – they’re both romantic, stylish and classic. We’re the only people selling these beautiful bikes in New Zealand and Greytown is the perfect place for our showroom – a gorgeous country village with wide, flat roads perfect for riding with lots of places to stop for world-class food, coffee and wine. We have an online shop so if customers can’t make it here, they can still buy the bikes.

How did you end up in Greytown? My wife and I wanted to retire but we didn’t want to leave the big city offering of Wellington. We looked all over the Wairarapa and decided on Greytown. It offers more space, more time and great weather. We’ve got a lifestyle block with chooks, ducks, fruit trees and olives which we really enjoy. What do you think makes Greytown special? As a tourist you have everything you need within easy walking distance within an hour’s drive of Wellington – it’s so easy. As a resident and part of the business community, you’re part of a small, vibrant and friendly town which is only going to continue to get better.

Wicked design combined with family life balance Alex Hutchings and Matt Calder Why did you choose to move to Greytown? Alex: We made the move two years ago with our daughter India, having bought a property to renovate and make our own here. We left Wellington to escape the chaos, and to begin our own business venture. Matt: The community, people, weather, business opportunities, and social life here leaves Wellington for dust! Mornings are spent with my girls grabbing a coffee, afternoons having a wine, and weekends heading to the river. It’s a wicked village.

What has it been like starting a business here? Alex: It’s been incredible; huge local support, community spirit, and freedom to explore our design ideals has meant we’ve seen huge growth in a short period of time. And it’s down to the people here and their support for a small agency like ours. Matt: Greytown provided the platform for A+M to flourish with a team of four in the studio (all from Greytown) — we’re thrilled! Has it been an easy move? Alex: We’ve made great friends, connections, and have really felt the support of everyone here - it’s been a breeze. Matt: We’ve fallen in love with the people, lifestyle, and the village. This is it for us for a long while yet. The Hub 78 Main Street Greytown 021 159 7855 team@alexandmatt.co.nz alexandmatt.co.nz

Local lads extend their reach Jason Osborne and Gavin Hodder Are you locals? Jason: I’m Greytown born and bred so I’m very happy to be able to open a second branch of the business in Greytown. Our original office is in Masterton but we wanted to be closer to our South Wairarapa clients. Gavin: Wairarapa’s my home province as well. After working in Wellington and overseas, it was great to come back to the Wairarapa and join Jason in 2012. We’re also launching our new enterprise – Maxim Business Consulting, we’re excited to offer more services focusing on strategic business planning. What are the benefits of working in Greytown? Gavin: We like to visit our clients at home, at their farms or where they work, so being in Greytown

makes South Wairarapa much more accessible. Jason: Since we moved here, we’ve been surprised at how vibrant Greytown is. We’re providing a hotdesking service for local business people who want all the benefits of a professional office right on their doorstep and we also have a state-ofthe-art boardroom that is available for hire. What about the benefits of living in the Wairarapa? Jason: The Wairarapa is a hidden jewel, I love living here. Gavin: It offers a great lifestyle and a shorter commute. I get to manage the Wairarapa Bush Rugby team and I would never have the time to do that in a bigger place. Ponsonby store flourishes in Greytown Siddhi Smith Why did you decide to expand your Auckland-based business to Greytown? I’d wanted to leave Auckland – to escape the complications of big city life. I’d looked into other places in New Zealand - up north, Nelson and the Hawkes Bay but after visiting friends in Masterton I fell in love with the Wairarapa. The pace of life is lovely, people just have more time, and everyone’s so friendly and welcoming. How does Encore fit into the Greytown retail scene? Encore is special in that we offer both new (samples, end of line etc.) and recycled designer clothing. I ship the clothes down from my Auckland store to sell here and I work between here and the Auckland store. I love the fact I can bike to work in just 5 minutes, in Auckland the commute could take over an hour!

What’s it like having a business in Greytown? Greytown is exciting. There is a great energy and the local retailers are really enthusiastic. It’s a lovely looking town and people who drive through really want to stop. What has the move been like for you personally? It has been great. I have made lots of friends here and my social life here is much better than in Auckland. Everything is just a bicycle ride away!

The perfect place to start a business – Dr Manji Sony How did you end up in the Wairarapa? I’ve lived in both North and South Islands – when I got to the Wairarapa I was surprised by its beauty and knew we had to live here. My husband and I live on an acre section with our two children. Why do you love Greytown? It’s such a creative and exciting place. I love the light and the space as well. I’ve designed my practice to reflect that – I have windows for walls and my patients look out into the branches of a 100-year-old walnut tree – where else would you find this kind of beauty in New Zealand.

Why set up your practice here? I’ve been working in the Wairarapa for five years and when the chance came up to open my own business in a brand new, purpose-built space in Greytown I knew this was it for me. I thought I’d need to market the practice but in a small town the word gets out fast, I was fully booked for at least two weeks before I even opened. Are there disadvantages to working in a small town? Not so far. I try to offer my patients a ‘big city’ service with late nights and Saturday appointments. I’ve invested in state-of-the-art equipment like a macrovision intraoral camera, advanced equipment to numb just a single tooth, low radiation digital x-rays to name a few.

Making our community a better place – Vicki Eckford and John Hume What role does Rotary play? Vicki: Our Rotary club owns the Martinborough Fair, which is the largest country fair in Australasia. We raise substantial funds from it that go back to the local community. The feedback we get back from the individuals and charities we help is amazing. John: As well as the fair, our club contributes in so many ways. Recently one member donated a row of pine trees which we chopped and delivered to local people who couldn’t afford to buy it - so satisfying to make a difference in people’s lives. What else does Rotary offer? John: We run a series of awards like the Pride of Workmanship Awards that recognize outstanding service given by members of our community to others, and our Youth Awards celebrate the fantastic achievements

of our local young people. Vicki: We work together to make our community a better place to live, work and play in. There’s great fellowship and it’s very rewarding. What’s Greytown like to live in? John: My family has lived in the South Wairarapa for five generations. We moved to Greytown a few years ago and it’s the best thing we’ve ever done – friendly people, a lovely climate, and so much to do. Vicki: Greytown has a great culture and sense of community, and I don’t know of anywhere else I’d rather live.

Flexible, friendly, child-led care Semone and Katie What makes Early Years such a great place for kids? Semone: It’s small – the maximum number of children we have at one time is just 22. The staff are amazing and the flexibility is great – there are no set or minimum hours, which is quite rare these days. Katie: Early Years has a real family feel. We’re not-for-profit with a real community focus. We don’t see ourselves as just a service but part of our community’s future. What is special to you about the Early Years philosophy? Katie: Early Years has a really strong focus on child-led learning, we are so lucky to be there as children investigate their interests and

ideas in a supportive and dynamic environment. Semone: As co-managers we support our fantastic, qualified team who are 100% inspired to make a positive difference in the lives of so many families. How does being in a small town affect how Early Years operates? Katie: It’s really important for us to create a sense of belonging for our children, not just within their family and Early Years but also the wider community – visits to the library, local orchard and rest home are easy because Greytown is small and friendly. Semone: Parents and staff all work together to help each other out. The sense of being supported you get in a small community is priceless.

We live our dreams building homes here Paul & Jeanette Southey How did you come to be in Greytown? Paul: Jeanette and I are both Wairarapa born and raised. We have travelled all over the world - to 52 different countries - but you can’t beat the Wairarapa. How long have you been in business together? Jeanette: I’ve run my own businesses from my early 20s and Paul was a teacher. Eleven years ago we opened A1 Homes because we could see the amazing potential of the Wairarapa. 460 homes later and we’re still convinced there is nowhere better to live. Who makes up your client base? Paul: About 60% of our clients are from outside the Wairarapa and of those there are 10 – 20% who don’t even ‘watch the build’ – they work with us entirely online. It’s a real

passion of ours to get people into affordable quality homes. We offer free interior design and colour consultation so it’s really easy. We have a system that is second to none. What do you love about living in the Wairarapa? Jeanette: The schools here are excellent. I love that the kids can bike to the local pool, to school and to see their friends – it’s a proper oldfashioned childhood. Paul: I love everything about Greytown. It is a really supportive community and I can make a difference. Jeanette and I are entrepreneurs - the Wairarapa offers us the space to have a go at everything. Multi-generational success Ebonee, Brook and Rob Wilson How did you end up in Greytown? Rob: Brook and Ebonee were living in Wellington when Ebonee got pregnant. As grandparents we wanted to be closer – we were living in the Bay of Islands. We’d driven through Greytown and loved it. I said ‘This place is going to take off - in 10 years it will be “it”! and seven years later I’ve been proved right. What’s life like in a small town? Ebonee: It’s great – a fantastic, friendly community and a great school. Brook: We’ve loved it since the first day we moved here.

How did you end up being Greytown’s handymen? Rob: I’m a builder by trade and decided to open a business doing all the jobs builders hate. I put my name and number on the side of the hot rod. On the first day I had two jobs, after that I couldn’t keep up. Ebonee: Brook and I were in big jobs and earning good money but working 60 – 80 hours a week. Brook was away from home up to six months at a time. We both wanted a lifestyle change. Brook: When Dad told me he was overwhelmed with work and asked me to come over and join him, it felt like a big risk. Now we’re so busy Dad can’t retire!

World-class printing on Main Street AJ Dawes Why are you based in Greytown? I’m Wairarapa-raised and the options for living and working here make Greytown a brilliant place to be. With the changes in technology over the last 20 years we can offer a huge range of services to our clients right from Main Street, they don’t need to go further afield. Recently we have invested in a large format printer which does everything from fine art prints to banners to stickers – all amazing quality. It means our clients can come to us for everything they need. Is most of your work local? We do a lot of local work but also work nationally. The lower overheads

here make us an appealing option for businesses in Palmerston North, Hawkes Bay, Wellington and even as far away as Auckland. What makes working in Greytown special? I really enjoy the hands-on relationship I have with our local clients. People just pop in – they can touch the paper stock and see exactly what we’re doing. Working face to face always means you have a better feel for what people want. As well, Greytown is vibrant and buzzing; seeing it change from the sleepy little town 20 years ago to all this growth and energy – it’s phenomenal and it’s great to be a part of it.

European design with a Kiwi twist – Alex Glicas and Sarah Bartlett How did you end up in Greytown? Alex: In London I was working for large companies fitting out hotels and restaurants. Sarah was pregnant with our first child and we just couldn’t imagine having children in London. We’d thought about going to Lithuania - where I’m from - but the language would have been a real barrier for Sarah. I already spoke English so we moved to New Zealand. Sarah: My family have lived in the Wairarapa since I was a teenager. We wanted to be close when the baby came, so we moved to Greytown. Had you always wanted your own business? Alex: I like working for myself, the satisfaction of designing and building my own pieces is great. I combine a modern European feel with more traditional features. I love the joinery – merging old and new to create a really personalised product for our clients.

And I am really enjoying working with New Zealand native timbers. Sarah: I do the marketing and communications for Mano and another Wairarapa-based company. The flexibility of owning the business means we have a great family/work balance. London to Greytown is a real change! Sarah: I love the community feel of Greytown and it’s a great place to bring up kids. There are so many creative people here doing interesting stuff and everything is right here.

Good for everyone from start to finish Nikki McIvor and Marina Adams How did Wild Honey come about? Marina: Nikki and I met 12 years ago and became great friends. I’ve always loved her art and wanted to find a way to get it to a wider audience. Three years ago I convinced her that we could create a viable business from reproducing her artwork - now we make and sell cards, high quality homewares, fine art prints and original works of art from Auckland to Stewart Island. Nikki: It was also really important to have a business that reflected what was important to us - sustainability, a local focus and environmental responsibility. What brought you both to Greytown? Nikki: We bought here because it was more affordable than over the hill and it offers a wonderful lifestyle. Marina: I’m originally from the States. The first time I came over the Rimutakas I wanted to live here. What are some of the best things about living in the Wairarapa? Nikki: It is a lovely friendly community and I really like living close to Wellington – it’s easy to get to and great for a visit. Marina: I can cycle to town, have a wonderful pastry at the French Baker, buy delicious meat at the butcher and then get my fruit and vegetables at Pinehaven Orchard - perfect! wildhoneyart@gmail.com
