The Ashhurst After 5 Business Networking group was set up in 2017 by Property Brokers and a small group of businesspeople. We found that most of us worked quite independently so it was a great opportunity to get together and support each other and their businesses. We are dedicated to helping Ashhurst grow and thrive! We are all passionate about Ashhurst and serving our community. It’s surprising how many businesses we have in the Ashhurst region.
Over the last few years we have organised two Ashhurst Night Markets, held movies in the Domain and fundraised to get a mural in the main street. Ashhurst finally has its beloved community pool back, restored to it’s original name – Splashhurst Community Pool The local pool has been refurbished and repaired after Palmerston North City Council announced in December 2018 that it had taken over the aquatic facility. Splashhurst Community Pool supports the community and Ashhurst School by providing separate hours for both groups to enjoy the facility. The pool is currently open school term time: Tuesday to Friday 6am-9.30am; 1pm-7pm, and Saturday 8am-6pm. School holidays: Tuesday to Friday 6am-7pm, Saturdays 8am-6pm. The pool is closed Sunday and Monday.
The facility offers lane swimming/walking, learn to swim lessons by an award winning swim school SwimMagic, leisure swimming, aqua fitness, birthday parties and other events for children and families. Our team is supportive of school events and will advertise increased hours that the facility is unavailable to the public during events such as swimming sports and triathlons as necessary.

Adrian and Jill have been making cheese at Cartwheel Creamery since 2014. The Creamery is just 10 km up Pohangina road from Ashhurst, 2km before the Pohangina village. The cow’s milk for their cheese comes from a couple of farms in the PohanginaAshhurst area and goat milk is collected from a farm at Opiki. Typically, they make cheese twice-a-week, and every week is different depending on which style of cheese is being made, and what markets and events are on the calendar. It almost goes without saying, the COVID-19 situation disrupted and severely reduced the normal flow of business during autumn 2020. Although that’s been very challenging, it did give Jill and Adrian the time and energy needed to get their online shop up and running. Scooptruck rolled its first ice cream in Ashhurst one year ago at the Back to Back ‘woolathon’ held in the VVC. It was the middle of winter! At that time, the business was a scooping freezer, five flavours, a plastic table and a shoe box for a cash till. From that beginning, Scooptruck developed into a purpose built passionfruit striped caravan that has contract sites around Palmerston North and a regular spot by the library in Ashhurst. The range now includes 25 flavours (8 non dairy)! Ashhurst has been my home village for 15 years. For most of that time I have been a primary school teacher. The concept of Scooptruck emerged from my hankering to run a business and my love of Duck Island ice cream!
The Duck Island company was set up by my daughter and her partners following a successful stint in the restaurant trade. They wanted to create a high end, all natural product with creative flavour combinations. The journey of becoming a small business owner has been somewhat like riding a new BMX track on a borrowed bike - lots of bumps, and it takes several laps to get the hang of things! I have learnt to ask lots of questions, trust my instincts and have a good accountant. Hi my name is Melissa Shani and I run Inspire Physio out of our local Plunket Rooms 3 days per week. I’ve lived in Ashhurst with my 4 children for almost 3 years, after returning to the Manawatu to be closer to family In 2006 I graduated from AUT with a Bachelor of Health Science (Physiotherapy) and have also completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Rehabilitation through the University of Otago. I have worked in a variety of places in NZ including Wellington (Lower Hutt Hospital), Auckland (Middlemore Hospital Rehab) and Wakiato (Laura Fergusson, Quality Rehabilitation Services and Active +). Prior to having children, I also travelled and worked in 2 private clinics in Dubai. Ashhurst has proved to be the perfect place to raise my children and I have loved getting to know more of the locals in my clinic over the past year. My children currently attend Ashhurst School and Learning Adventures, in the past I have also had a child at Ashhurst Kindergarten all of which we found to be excellent. I enjoy working closely with people and get a lot of satisfaction out of good result. Although I do hands on soft tissue manipulation and manual therapy, I also have a strong emphasis on education, activity modification and exercise. I treat a wide range of conditions including back injuries, sports injuries, neurological, orthopaedic and women’s health. I believe in ongoing professional development and in the last year have done several online physiotherapy courses as well as a 5-day women’s health course in Sydney. I plan to keep my home and business in Ashhurst long term and are thankful to be part of this community. I have received excellent support from locals since starting up last year. This year we have been able to put back into the community by sponsoring the Ashhurst Pohangina Rugby Football Club.

Hi I’m Renee and I am the photographer and owner of Renee Emma Photography. I live in Ashhurst with my husband Michael and our two little rascals Matilda (5) and Alfie (3). We also have two dogs Kevin & Boo who are very important members of our family. Originally from Colyton I studied at the Wanganui School Of Design after attending high school and received my bachelors degree. I have always had a passion for photography and dressing up pet sheep, dogs and cats in fun outfits and taking photos of them was a favourite pastime! After working as a graphic designer for a year after I graduated I headed off to Europe and beyond to travel the world. This reignited

John and Heather moved to the Manawatu from Waiheke after running a clinic there for 25 years. For five years they commuted to Kapiti where they ran a de-sex clinic for the Wellington SPCA. They also did all their soft tissue surgery for that area. “Animal Welfare has always been an interest for us and we have worked for welfare groups throughout the local area” says Heather. “We have run small clinics together throughout our working lives and we aim to provide a personal service with friendly affordable care”.
