Fuse Panels

should they all be replaced?

Fuse panels are no longer used in new homes. Fewer and fewer people are familiar with them. As a result, when most people see a fuse panel they immediately think, “That is unsafe and will need to be replaced right-away”.

Most electricians agree that fuses are actually more "fail-safe" than circuit breakers in terms of “blowing” or ”tripping” when they are supposed to, in order to protect the circuit. The problem is that people do not put the correctly sized fuses in the panel (the circuits are “over-fused”), and that creates a safety hazard. If the fuse installed can handle more current than the connected wiring, the wiring could overheat in an overload condition and potentially lead to a fire.

Circuits usually become “over-fused” when a fuse keeps blowing. Occupants figure out that if they put in a higheramperage fuse, it will not blow as much.

Unfortunately, this is not the right way to handle the problem. Usually the circuit needs to be split into multiple circuits, in order to reduce the electrical load on the fuse.

Fuse panels come in all different sizes and shapes. However, most of the residential panels are typically small and do not accommodate enough fused circuits for the modern needs of homes. As circuits get added, more space is needed. As a result, most fuse panels are surrounded by additional fuse panels or small circuit breaker panels referred to as sub-panels.

When inspecting fuse panels, we remove the covers and check that the wire sizes match the fuse sizes (i.e. 14 gauge wires have 15 amp fuses, 12 gauge have 20 amp, 10 gauge have 30 amp, etc.). It is a common occurrence is to find several green screw-in fuses (30 amp) connected to relatively small wires. If you see a lot of green fuses when first looking at a fuse panel, there is a good chance that several of the circuits are “over-fused”, creating a potentially unsafe condition.

Although fuse panels can be used safely if properly sized fuses are installed, most electricians will recommend upgrading the panels to a modern circuit breaker panel if any electrical work is undertaken in the home. Un-

less the panel is an unusually large fuse panel that accommodates many circuits, most people should budget to replace their fuse panels to allow room for more circuits. Prior to replacement, owners should at least ensure that the properly sized fuses are installed, for safety.

When To Pay The Contractor and how much

You’re planning a home improvement and hopefully got three estimates from contractors that you checked out with the Better Contractors Bureau. You have decided on one as your contractor and call him to let him know he has the job. A date is set for him to come over to sign the contract and discuss the specifications: approximate start and completion dates and most important to him, the payment schedule.

You check the contract over to make sure it contains the contractor’s company name, address (not P.O. Box number), phone number, correct price, specifications, and the payment schedule. You find that he’s asking for a large down payment and three progress draw payments that are tied to various phases of the project’s progression phases.

This is where you have the upper hand and hold all the so-called cards! (money) Never give a large down payment! It’s suggested that you give a good faith deposit of no more than $500.

Where specialty items have to be ordered such as custom cabinetry, custom

windows or doors or any other items that will only be able to be installed in your home he will usually ask for more but it’s advisable to tell the contractor when he produces proof of the actual placed order you will then give him a draw for the item.

The regular payment schedule in this area is usually a small good faith down payment and then three progress draws.

Always make sure the payment coincides with the work that’s done. For example in the case of an addition if the contract states one third when the mason starts the foundation don’t pay it until you see the materials are on the site and the mason is actually working. The same for a framing draw or other similar work done.

Any remodeling contractor worth his salt should have enough credit to buy materials and pay subcontractors to get the work started. However some suppliers want payment up front on specialty items and won’t except credit so in this case the contractor is within his right to ask for payment before ordering.

Most jobs will entail changes so be sure that you get the specifications and cost in writing and signed by both parties! Again don’t pay for a change upfront and only when the change is started. No matter what the draw schedule is that you agree on always protect yourself and keep a large enough balance to insure that the job is to your satisfaction.

A walk through final inspection should be mandatory and usually produces a punch list. If the job is completed and the punch list only has a few minor items on it such as some missing caulking or a molding that needs replacing and the balance is large then you should work out a payment for the balance holding enough to insure the contractor returns to finish the punch list items. Do not add to the punch list after the initial one so be sure you have listed all your concerns.

When the job is finished hopefully it was an enjoyable experience and you can recommend the contractor to friends and relatives. Good Luck with your project.

You have finished your 2015 jobs around the house. You’ve de-cluttered and organized. You have happily put away all traces of holiday. You have vacuumed up tree needles several times. Now what? Think accessories for your home. Give your place a facelift with some new ideas that won’t break the bank.

Is your hanging artwork drab? Find some new and uncommon pieces to hang on your walls. Maps! I love them, old and tattered or new crisp and fresh. I recently took an old fishing map [purchased at a garage sale for a quarter], and had it mounted on a board and hung it over the fireplace.

To my surprise, the frame shop got all the wrinkles smoothed out. If you have a favorite vacation city, get a map of it and frame it, or, take that map and cut it into sections and frame those then hang. I saw at one local store, a large map of the USA framed and matted.

Hung in a boy’s room it would be fun and unexpected. Frame old photo-

graphs of your family. Use large frames and large mats with smaller photos.

Black and white photos are super cute framed this way. If your photos are not black and white, just use your copier and copy on white card stock. Reimagine your walls!

Anything old is new again. Scour goodwill stores for monogrammed decanters. Look for apothecary bottles and unusual glassware. Find an old silver tray and fill it with your found glassware and place it on your coffee table. You could fill one vase with a single flower stem or fill a square vase with muted colored stones. While shopping at goodwill, look for books.

Use them piled high for extra height on your mantle or under a too short lamp.

Take your kidlets on a nature walk and display a bowl of found objects.

We have a bowl in the front hall with acorns, deer antlers, pinecones and feathers that my daughters found many years ago in the back woods be-

hind our house. If you love your wine, save those corks and display them in a large silver bowl in the dining room.

Have some old table clocks? Arrange them together on your desk or mantle.

Toss pillows are the easiest and quickest way to accessorize. I am the queen of toss pillows. They are so inexpensive and easy to make. Keep your inserts and just make new covers using napkins, dish towels, wool blankets and even your hubby’s discarded tattered shirts. I have several shirts at ready to

be made into pillow covers. My fave is an old Polo button down in stripes of cream and white. One day this winter it will be transformed into a fresh, crisp pillow for the cottage.

Think outside the box. And on these long, snowy days get creative and accessorize!
