the Annual BCB Home Fair Expo Despite the snow continuing to blow, temperatures remaining frigid, and an active bounty on Punxsutawney Phil, there is one sure sign of the coming Spring - the annual BCB Home Fair Expo. Celebrating 31 years of successful home shows, the Better Contractors Bureau (BCB) is planning for it’s best show yet.

“The Home Fair Expo is the event of the year for our members.” says BCB Executive Director, Carmen Santora. “It’s hosted by the BCB for our contractors to promote their services in the finest way.”

Since many contractors are busy working during the day, finding convenient times to answer questions and discuss possible projects can be hard to come by.

By directly interacting with the public, exhibitors can demonstrate their knowledge and skills while explaining their services. “We offer people an opportunity to get to know their contractors, ask questions and get inspired.”

Show-goers can expect to see nearly 300 exhibitors displaying the latest trends and resources available for home repair in the largest home show in Western New York.

Guests are welcome to sit in on educational seminars offering informative tips and to learn about new programs available in their communities. In addition to the exhibitors and seminars, the BCB has opened the show to Realtors and mortgage brokers so the show will now cover all areas of home ownership - building, repairs, remodeling, selling and finance.

The host of the show, the Better Contractors Bureau, “... is a non-profit consumer protection agency built to protect and inform consumers.” says Santora.

Considered a “Watch Dog’’ for homeowners, the BCB and it’s members work to ensure credibility and peace of mind for customers and business owners/contractors alike. “Rochester is one of the few communities with an organization that gives contractors the opportunity

to belong to a contractors bureau. Our members are in alliance with the New York State Attorney General’s Office to uphold the credibility of honest contractors and increase the image and reputations of their trades.”

BCB participants receive a certificate, ID cards and logo decals to display at their place of business to ensure customers that they are members in good standing who subscribe to the professional standards of the Bureau. In addition to protecting consumers and promoting high standards, the BCB also offers: access to mediation of consumer and member problems, information regarding new laws and regulations of New York State, a team of advisors available for financial, tax and legal advise, and opportunities for members to increase business through social gatherings and events (such as the Home Fair Expo). The BCB of Rochester currently has a dedicated membership of 8,000 Accredited Businesses.

In keeping with it’s commitment to the community, the BCB donates part of the proceeds from the expo to a charitable cause. This year, the BCB has chosen the Pierson Family. After the tragic death of Officer Daryl Pierson, a group of business owners and employees donated their time to repair the family home and the BCB would like to continue this support.

The Home Fair Expo runs from Friday, February 27th through Sunday, March 1st at the Dome Center and Minette Hall in Henrietta. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at Wegmans or at the door and discount coupons are available on the BCB website. Harry Nillson nailed it. He put the lime in the coconut and we were all inspired to drink the daiquiri. The coconut has enjoyed a resurgence.

My daughter who works in the health food industry, insisted that I get reacquainted with the goodness of the coconut, mostly coconut oil and of course organic coconut oil.

So while she was in town we sauntered down to the health food store several times and purchased among other delights, coconut oil. Plantation Parade Revisited We had an easy winter until January hit.

With it came snow, snow, snow! On top of that freezing cold temperatures! Many in our region are heading south, if they are not there yet. One of my favorite places in the south is Louisiana. I have spent many happy hours there exploring the state, its history and architecture. Today New Orleans is a balmy 68 degrees fahrenheit!

What we wouldn’t give for that right now!

Last year, I was busy researching my upcoming book Plantation Parade Revisited, which updates a story previously told.

Plantation Parade, written in the 1930’s by a renown southern scholar Harnett T. Kane, contained stories and photos of plantations as they were at the time. Some in disrepair and others lovingly preserved.

These homes have been the stage for many stories that played out in the lives of their inhabitants. Let me tell you some stories of a couple of these beautiful homes.

At the time the Plantation Parade was written, some Plantations were still held by the families that lived in them for several generations. Today few hold that distinction. One property still in family hands is Parlange, located on the banks of False River in Pointe Coupee Parish, it was built in between 1830-1840, by the Marquis de Ternant. It passed into the Parlange family through marriage. Virginie de Ternant, after the death of her husband took her children to Paris to recover. There, Virginie eventually met and married Colonel Charles Parlange. Together, they spent time between apartments in Paris and the plantation, which took on the name of Parlange.

There are many tragedies and distinctions in the history of Parlange. The fabled Madame X, painted by John Singer Sargent was the grand daughter of Virginie.

Her name Virginie Amélie, and her ties to Paris and the art world came thanks to her grandmothers hard determination not to fall away from an elevated social position.

Tragedies were known also, in the drowning the young heir, left for a moment by a slave along the riverside. His sister later felled by mental illness, was hidden by a false tale of her death. Supposedly forced to marry by her mother Virginie, the story went, she ran crying out into the evening, and tripped on a tree root. She fell, crashing her head on the oak, dying crumpled at its base. Virginie supposedly never forgave herself after. In actuality her daughter never married and lived the rest of her life in France!

After the Civil war, hard times descended on Parlange. Madame was determined to hang onto her home. Her youngest child took the burden of securing the family home. He worked the land, building savings and acquiring a profession. He became a lawyer and eventually a state senator and then a Justice of the Louisiana Supreme court. After the death of Virginie, Charles closed the doors of Parlange,

leaving it for twenty years to the vagaries of time. Only after the First World War, did his son Charles Jr. return to the family home with his bride, Paula Brier. Together they opened the windows and doors of this house to its new life, as Queen of False River.

You all have seen this house in one form or another. Today, few would recognize it by its original name, Bon Sejour. The cultivated name “Bon Sejour” has fallen, thanks to the gasps of those passing and seeing the large alley of oaks framing this house. Now known as Oak Alley this fabled pink palace is everyones vision of a plantation. People travel from all over the world to see it and it’s towering oaks. Yearly, thousands of buses descend on Vacherie where this tourist attraction sits. It was built between 1837-1839 on the west bank of the Mississippi. A towering Greek Revival, graced with twenty-eight Doric columns, each eight feet circumference around, no expenses were spared in its building.

Christened Bon Sejour (Pleasant Sojourn) by Célina Roman, the wife of its builder, Jacques Roman, this home has endured. Jacques allowed his wife free rein in suggesting what to install in the new home, hoping she would learn to prefer the country life over what New Orleans had to offer. She never did develop that preference. But her taste is still reflected in the very construction of the great house. Each door is framed by double columns, the floor plan was laid out to host many dinner parties. The home features large windows and transoms. It was fit for all the best furniture its builders could buy in New Orleans or on their trips to France.

Despite all the finery, Jacques was really a farmer at heart, running his plantation well. He encouraged his slaves to learn the art of cultivation and was rewarded with the development by one of his slaves, of the grafting process of Pecan limbs which produced desired thin shells. This is credited with being the beginning of the pecan horticulture and industry of the south. After the death of Jacques, the plantation ran up large debt and was auctioned off. Ironically, many years later, cattle were harbored on the ground floor, resting their hoofs on cool marble. The irony being, cattle were the original means to Mr. Romans incredible wealth.

Bon Sejour passed through several hands until it was rescued by Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Stewart. They lovingly restored the

home to its first glory. Besides its majestic beauty, one of the more important distinctions is that the Andrews started a trend of rescuing the old plantation homes of Louisiana. This rescue effort is ongoing to this day, with still more plantation homes being pulled back from the brink of being forever lost. After the death of Mr. Andrews, Mrs. Andrews opened her home to school tours. She eventually founded the non-profit Oak Alley Foundation, so that her home would always “remain open for all to share.” Two years after her death, the home was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1974.

The last home I will talk about is my favorite. Built by Duncan Kenner, Ashland is now owned by the Shell Chemical,LP. Geismar Plant. Not open to the public, this home sits off the road and is partially restored, but only on the outside. The interior, especially the ground floor has seen the damage years of neglect brings. If only I could own it and live there the rest of my days!

Built as a wedding gift for his bride, Anne Guillotine Nanine Bringier, it proved to the Creoles, that an Anglo could have taste and distinction.

Kenner was worthy to marry into the esteemed Bringier family. The marriage proved to be a happy one. Duncan Kenner was a man of many colors; a horseman, gambler, inventor, lawyer, politician as well as multi-lingual. He was a staunch confederate, yet championed emancipating the slaves despite having many himself.

His charm opened many doors, his intelligence kept him afloat.

The home was started in 1839 and finished in 1841. It was considered one of the grandest and largest plantations ever built in the state. It has 28 columns extending two stories all around the house. Twelve foot wide galleries cool the house. During the war, while enjoying the evening on the second story gallery, Mrs. Kenner and

her daughters heard Mr. Kenner speeding away at dusk on horseback. “Some one is in a hurry” she remarked, not knowing it was her husband.

Union forces had arrived, determined to capture Mr. Kenner, a high positioned confederate official. He was saved by slaves that rushed to him in the fields, warning that soldiers had landed on the dock. Kenner regularly rode into the fields on his racehorses incase of the need for a fast escape. This horse balked, refusing to move.

Offered another mount he made his escape. Union forces seized the home looting it, taking away all that could be moved.

Kenner’s prized racehorses were taken with the childrens ponies. Young Master Kenner created such a fuss, an officer took pity on him and called the pony back for him.

The family left after the home was confiscated in 1865. But in 1866 Mr. Kenner swore an oath of allegiance to the Union, resulting in the return of his properties.

He fared better than many and was able to return to his prosperous ways.

One last story illustrated his relationship with many of his slaves. Besides risking their lives to warn him, another exhibited the deep loyalty felt. Abe Hawkins, a jockey trained to ride on Ashland’s private track, won great acclaim after leaving Ashland. He had won one of his biggest victories ever at Saratoga Race Track. After, Abe spied someone he knew from Ashland and asked a message be relayed; offering his money to help Kenner back on his feet.

Kenner responded: “Look Abe up, thank him very much for the offer. I do not need the money…the plantation has been restored to me… Ashland is as much his home as it ever was. And when he wishes to return there, he will be welcomed.” Return Abe Hawkins did, one year later, to die of Tuberculosis. He lies buried under an oak near the track he so loved at Ashland.
