As someone who lives in the Maplewood neighborhood of the City of Rochester, I’m looking forward to the annual home tour coming up on September 17th. This is a fabulous tour of some really incredible homes. Don’t miss out on learning what this unique part of Rochester has to offer! What many people don’t know is there are many stunning homes in the Maplewood area built by some of Rochester wealthiest residents of the past. This tour is an opportunity to see some of them and learn what possibilities await anyone who wants to buy an amazing home at incredible pricing compared to other parts of the city. I bought an old Queen Ann Victorian now nearing completion of it’s restoration. It has become a very pretty home offering a comfortable way of life. In short, I love my house. And the best part? Homes like mine are typical of this area! Tour Headquarters is located at 1290 Lake Avenue, (corner of Seneca Parkway) at the University Preparatory Charter School for Young Men. This is housed in the W.G. Tuber Mansion, which was rehabbed to accommodate the school’s needs. Though repurposed, the mansion has retained it’s history and architectural details. The tour starts at 11:00 am and ends at 4:00, rain or shine. In addition, Cynthia Howk of the Landmark Society of WNY will give a free lecture on the history of Maplewood and its architecture from 10:00 to 11:00 am in the gym.

Is A 100 Amp Electric Service Enough? Should you upgrade?
The most common electric services in typical residential homes are 100 amp, 150 amp or 200 amp. Larger homes may even have 400 amp services. For this article we’ll say the home is your typical 3 bedroom /12001500 sq. st. home. So how much power do you really need? To get an accurate number you would have to do a load calculation using exact numbers measured with an amp meter. The alternative would be to add up all the nameplate ratings of the appliances, electronics & light fixtures in the home. Unfortunately, neither of these methods are 100% accurate as there are many variables that would need to be considered. So how do you determine roughly what size service is right for your home? Does a 150 amp or a 200 amp service really give you “more power” and what does having more power really mean? Do you really need it? The common myth is that the homes of today use more electricity than the homes of yesterday. This is false! With LED lighting replacing incandescent bulbs and Energy Star rated appliances becoming more common, replacing the power hogs of years ago, our power consumption in typical residential homes is lower than it’s been in previous years. Having a larger electric service gives you the potential to be able to connect more

If your home was built this way you most certainly already have an electric service large enough to handle this load but if you convert to electric heat from another type of fuel then you will definitely need an upgrade.
