some places have a life of their own Halloween is upon us! The leaves have turned and we head into the ghostly white of winter shortly. It is time for me to reminisce about some homes I have long admired for their beauty, history and ghostly apparitions! Some local, others not. Driving through Clyde, New York, years ago, I was stunned at this decaying hulk of a home. It was huge and definitely had been a grand house. A old tattered sigh declared it was a home for veterans, but it seemed they were no longer there. The place was empty and dying. I was haunted by it, and would try to go by when ever I was in the area. Imagine my joy one day to see signs of rehab! Originally this home at 39 W. Genesee St., Clyde, NY. was built in 1858 and lived in by Dr. And Mrs. Smith and their daughter, Eugenia. Eugenia and her husband Charles Ely, the owner of one of the largest glass companies in the world (at that time) eventually took over the home. They proceeded to enlarge and adorn the house turning into an show-stopping mansion, by 1910. Two generations of family enjoyed the home before eventually selling. It passed through the hands of multiple private owners and eventually was turned into a Veterans home and sadly, low-income housing. Then it fell empty and was condemned in 2006. Mark Wright, a local investor of real estate, considered the importance and historical significance of this home, and knew he had to save it. He became the proud owner in 2008, and began the rehab to turn the house into his private home. It’s said that some workers refused to work alone in the home, after experiencing ghostly encounters or incidents. Locals would stop by during the renovation and share tales of hauntings. Who the ghosts are is a question. The Smiths and Ely’s died in the home and one servant apparently lost his body…only the head was found! Eventually, Mr. Wright decided he had to share this home with the public, and the haunting experiences as well. He turned it into what is now known as the Erie Mansion Bed & Breakfast. To experience this magnificent home, call 315-9024085 to schedule a stay in one of the luxury suites. You might get lucky and have your own ghostly encounter! 65 Jumel Terrace in New York City is the site of the Morris-Jumel Mansion. It’s reputed that five ghosts haunt this place, but one being most dominant, that being Eliza Jumel. This home hosted a sordid tale of a three way love triangle that ended badly for all. Eliza and Stephen Jumel moved into the mansion when they returned from ten years in France. The marriage was foundering and Eliza was

reputed to be having an affair with former vice-president Aaron Burr, also known as Alexander Hamilton’s assassin! Stephen accidentally fell (or perhaps was pushed) onto a pitchfork and died a gruesome death. His wife immediately married Burr, but only for three years. They divorced and Burr died a pauper. Eliza became a recluse with incredibly poor hygiene. She descended into a world of dementia, eventually dying alone in this big beautiful mansion, in 1865. By 1868, stories were being told by those that had visited or lived in the home. Loud rapping and ghostly apparitions wandered the halls. Once a woman in a violet dress appeared to school children in 1964, who were touring the house. She was recognized as Eliza from the portrait that graces the main hall. She screamed at the children to “Shut Up!” Nothing quite so dramatic has happened since. Seances in the house have conjured up a demented woman, believed to be Eliza. Her first husband Stephen also haunts the building, bemoaning the fact that he was murdered and buried alive! He told this tale to a ghost hunter researching the ghosts of the Mansion. You can experience a “paranormal evening at the mansion” on Saturday, Nov. 2. if you are interested. This entails bringing a sleeping bag and making a reservation. Call 212-923-8008 to be included! New Orleans is one of my most beloved cities! If we have lived other lives before, I have certainly lived there! One of my favorite homes in New Orleans is a bed and breakfast known as “The Magnolia Mansion”. It was selected as one of The Most Haunted Inns of America in 2006. Guests have written reports of experiencing ghostly behavior while there. The most common occurrences are movement of belongings during the night by a ghost known as “the caretaker”. This soul pulls covers over guests, strokes their cheeks like a parent would a child and sometimes sits at the foot of the bed. Other ghosts are known to play with shoes and guests phones or whisper hello in childish voices. This gorgeous home is one of the most photographed homes in the garden district. Sitting on the porch under its southern traditional light blue ceiling, on a summer day,

is a treat. Your mind wanders to what it must have been like to own this beautiful place. Head on over to 2127 Pyrtania St. to see if you too can be cared for by an other worldly soul! One of my favorite haunted homes is Chretien Point Plantation, located in Sunset, LA. True Stories! It was governed by a strong willed woman who was known for her beauty and determination. Her husband Hippolyte Chretien so wanted to marry her, he gave her family a dowry instead of the other way around. He was known as a romantic who preferred to spend his days creating poems and floating on the local waterways on a special barge he had built for this purpose. This was ideal for his wife Felicité, who was very hands on in managing the plantation. Not only was she in charge in that regard, she also joined the men at night, contrary to the times, at poker games, while the other women retired to chat about womanly concerns. In 1838 her infant son was taken by Yellow Fever and a year later her troubadour husband followed. Most women in that time period would have returned to their fathers home or remarried quickly. Felicité did neither. She continued to manage the house and plantation. One night she was awakened by a noise and went to investigate what was going on. Her help were in their cabins and only she and her four children, all fast asleep, were in the main house. She was horrified to see men outside the gate and the realized one had already entered the house and was coming up the staircase. She behaved as a helpless woman would do in her time and situation, begging for mercy and offered him jewels if he would leave immediately. The man advanced towards her on the staircase, no doubt pleased that such a comely woman was at his mercy and anticipating some fun at her expense. Sadly for him that was not to be. As he reached for the jewels being offered, she quickly revealed her gun and shot him in the head between the eyes, at close range. He tumbled down, off the 11th stair tread. She quickly summoned her servants and gave the men guns to stand guard

at the windows. Others dragged the body to a closet under the stairs so her children would not see it in the morning. The robbers friends became impatient and approached the house. She called out challenging them as to what they wanted. They inquired about their friend, to which she replied he had not come to her home. “All my men are with me and we have guns. He could not have come here!” The horsemen saw the glint of the guns in the windows by the light of the moon and quickly turned their horses, mumbling that they must have been mistaken. They never returned. In the morning the Sheriff was summoned to collect the body. Slave women scrubbed the closet floor, but the blood stains would not come out and they are visible to this day! Chretien Point was at the center of a civil war battle known as “Buzzards Prairie” which took place October 15th, 1863. The union soldiers led by General Nathaniel Banks, advanced on the plantation preparing to burn it to the ground. Its men were off at war and only the women of the family and Felicité’s son, Hippolyte Chretien II remained. Hippolyte was very sick and feeble but managed to get to the veranda and gave the secret Masonic distress signal only Masons knew. General Banks, a fellow Mason, spared the house but still raided the plantation and burned the rest of the buildings to the ground. The family was in dire straits from then on, eventually losing the magnificent home to mortgage holders. The heir (Jules) to Chretien Point, was reduced to becoming a traveling salesman of pots and pans. By the 1940’s the place was desolate and decaying. It remained so until the late 1970’s when it was restored to its former opulence. It now serves as a bed & breakfast. It is believed and claimed that the robber, now known by the name Robert; pronounced as “roh-Bair”, is still lurking about even playing with coins left by guests on dressers. Felicité too, still roams the house she loved so much, sometimes accompanied by some of her children and daughter-in-law Celestine. Soldiers are seem roaming the fields about the house, coming to haunt the place they drew their last earthly breath. As long as you do not anger Madame Chretien, you will leave intact!

come crawling back! You’ve seen it in the news, the issue of bed bugs seems to be growing in epidemic proportions. We’ve asked our business partner, John Fraysier from Castleguard Pest Elimination in Fairport to give us some insight on these pests. John can be contacted at 585-381-0395.

For the Pest Management Professional, bed bugs have become the new cockroaches of the early 21st century. Why the comparison? It’s not a biological one. The two pests are distinct species and there are many differences between them. The comparison lies in their proliferation in the US and throughout the world. And the fact that getting rid of them is not easy. The good news is that with the introduction of pesticide baits back in the 1990’s, cockroaches have become easier to control and heavy infestations can be eliminated without the use of sprays. Unfortunately, no “silver bullet” solution exists for eliminating bed bugs. Surprisingly, bedbugs are a favorite prey of the cockroach. It’s not uncommon to have a problem with both pests at the same time because of this relationship - just don’t think of this as a natural method of bed bug control as both pests are highly undesirable.

While both bugs may inhabit the same space, there are significant differences in the two pests. Cockroaches are known carriers of food borne illnesses like salmonella, whereas the bed bug has not been found to carry any disease transferable to humans. Studies continue to go on, but thus far scientists are baffled as to why this is the case. The feces left behind from both pests have been found to cause allergic reactions in some, and asthma in others. But these are allergy problems, not disease. So why is it that bed bugs have come crawling back? Forty years is a long time for them to be away. The quick answer often sited is the absence of DDT. This is taking on less importance now as research is showing that bed bugs were developing resistance to DDT back when it was used. It is now presumed that DDT, if it were used today, would be inef-

fective against bed bugs. Another answer commonly given is the change in pest management in the past fifteen years. Before the use of insect baits, liquid sprays were used liberally in homes and institutions for the control of cockroaches. These sprays, it is postulated, helped to keep bed bugs out of buildings as a side benefit. Baits have no such secondary benefit. Studies are underway to try and link genetic changes in the bug to their resurgence. Whatever the reason, bed bugs are back in force. So next time you hear, “Mommy, there’s a monster under my bed,” check it out. Maybe there is.

As I See It

• Likely entry points: Where dormers meet roofs or where roof shingles overhang fascia boards and especially where tree limbs are close to roofs, as squirrels can jump 10-12 feet through the air.

MICE & RATS:

• Preventive measures: Prune trees away from the house; keep roof and exterior trim in pristine repair; remove bird feeders. Nail hardware cloth over potential entry points until they can be repaired properly. This is a job for a pro!

• Diameter of entry hole: ¼ inch or larger. • Likely entry points: Garage, basement, gaps around utility lines.

• Signs of infestation: Scampering noises in ceilings or attics; insulation missing from spots near eaves; ½ inch droppings; piles of nuts.

• Signs of infestation: 1/8 inch long droppings; smell of urine; noises at night; holes gnawed in pet food BEES: boxes. • Watch for swarming in one area and if you don’t notice many bees • Preventive measures: Seal exterior wait until night and then spray gaps with mortar or caulk; weather-strip the bottom of basement opening with a wasp and bee spray and garage doors; keep all pet food and plug opening with steel wool. stuffs sealed in hard plastic, glass • Use a garden hose with a heavy or steel containers. spray to knock down small bee • Stopgap measures: Stuff copper mesh or bronze wool into foundation cracks. • Job for a pro? For many years of my career, I was hired to design and furnish the interior of model homes. There are ways that designers can maximize your home’s value by utilizing a few simple techniques. Every homeowner can and should use these tips from the pros when putting their home on the market. It is all about the curb appeal. We have heard this one over and over, but it is so true. A first impression lasts forever! Tidy up the yard, trim the shrubs, and pick up all debris. Put those garbage cans away neatly along an interior garage wall. If you had a blooming garden, clean it up now and trim back perennials. If we should have a warm day, give your front door a color makeover with a quick coat of fresh paint. If we don’t, clean it [try a magic eraser] and place a seasonal decoration on it. And while we are here, don’t overdo the decorations, less is best, always. Keep it clean. When open house visitors were asked what was their biggest turn-off they replied, ‘a dirty house’. Make your home sparkle. Start with the windows. To make the windows clean and streakless, wash with lemon Joy and warm water and use a squeegee. Clean counters and appliances and remove any magnets, sorry kidlets. Make sure the corners are clean, all corners. Certainly, when showing

your home the baths will be sparkling clean. Add a new neutral shower curtain and new, unused bar of soap. Have the carpets cleaned, or rent a machine and DIY. If you have some extra dollars and want to elevate your way to a speedy sale, here’s some great ways to spend your money. Invest in granite. Everyone wants it. Select granite to enhance your kitchen or bath. Use a small, tight pattern. Some granite selections have rather large, comet-like patterns, I would stay away from those. Paint your interior walls. Neutrals are always safe, but soft blues and greens are popular. Buy new towels and rugs for the baths. For all the bedrooms, purchase new pillow shams and toss pillows and coverlets. If you have hardwoods in your family room, look for a new area rug and pillows for the sofa. Add some large plants and make sure all lamps work and that the room is well lit. Buyers like light. Making your home look visually appealing is the secret that designers use and now the secret is out!
