Editor’s Corner God sells us all things at the price of labor. Leonardo daVinci
Cover
This Month’s West Coast Cover,
There is no substitute for hard work. Thomas Edison All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence. Martin Luther King Jr Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our United States. More than 100 years after the first Labor Day observance, there is still some doubt as to who first proposed the holiday for workers. Some records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a cofounder of the American Federation of Labor, was first in suggesting a day to honor those “who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold.” Many believe that Matthew Maguire, a machinist, not Peter McGuire, founded the holiday. Recent research seems to support the contention that Matthew Maguire, later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, N.J., proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in NewYork. What is clear is that the Central Labor Union adopted a Labor Day proposal and appointed a committee to plan a demonstration and picnic. The vital force of labor added materially to the highest standard of living and the greatest production the world has ever known and has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy. It is appropriate, therefore, that the nation pay tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation’s strength, freedom, and leadership — the American worker. The first U.S. Labor Day celebrations took place in New York City in 1882 at the behest of local labor unions. The unions wanted to put the fruits of their industries on public display. In 1887, Oregon instituted a state-level Labor Day holiday. 29 other states followed suit before it finally became a federal holiday in 1894. In response to a groundswell of support for a national holiday celebrating the nation’s workers, Sen. James Henderson Kyle of South Dakota introduced a law declaring Labor Day a national holiday to the 53rd Congress celebrated on the first Monday of September each year. It was approved on June 28, 1894. The original Labor Day celebrations consisted of street parades displaying the contributions of laborers in various industries. These parades were followed by local festivals and other amusements. The holiday was also a time for giving speeches on labor-related topics, which is still occasionally done today. We encourage you to celebrate the fruits of your labor. We appreciate the work you bring to the table and the fine work ethic you demonstrate to the U.S. workforce. In closing please read about some great companies in the articles within this issue and let us know if you know of a company that deserves an article written on them. Thank you for your continued support. Bless our troops!

As North Korean missile capabilities and tests are increasing, experts agree that a near-term, affordable defensive solution is needed. RPA’s and their video sensors can enable early ballistic missile tracking in boost and ascent phase, thereby increasing probability of intercept. Developing and delivering capabilities to protect and defend the U.S., Japan and South Korea is a critical part of the General Atomics’ mission,” said Linden P. Blue, CEO of General Atomics – Aeronautical Systems.

The conference, titled “The Role of Unmanned Platforms in Ballistic Missile Defense: From Persistent Surveillance to Boost-Phase Intercept,” brought together leading experts on ballistic missile defense and advanced aerospace systems from the United States and Japan. Keynote addresses were given by Itsunori Onodera, who has since been appointed as Japan’s Defense Minister, and Congressman Duncan L. Hunter, former Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee and Representative, California, 52nd District. Other speakers includedVice Admiral RobertThomas (Ret.), former Commander, U.S. 7th Fleet; Masao Akiyama, senior vice president, IHI Inc.; Mr. Michael Del Rosso, vice president, The American Strategy Group; Dr. Leonard Caveny, former science and technology director of the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization; and Dr. Kenneth Weinstein, president and CEO Hudson Institute. “The defense of the United States against a North Korean missile threat has to begin over the Sea of Japan,” said the conference’s organizer Dr. Arthur Herman, Hudson Institute senior fellow and Pulitzer Prize Finalist historian and policy analyst. “Japan will be one of America’s most important partners in developing a missile defense system that prevents a North Korean launch from ever reaching our shores. At the same time, armed unmanned aerial vehicles may represent the best way to stop a missile attack before it leaves North Korean airspace.” A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Foxconn Technology Group, the Apple Inc. manufacturing partner that recently announced plans to build a $10 billion complex in southeast Wisconsin, now plans to create a research and development facility in Michigan centered around the auto industry, a sector that Apple is investing in too. Foxconn CEO Terry Gou said in an interview with a Chinese newspaper that his company will develop “next generation auto technology, such as Internet ofVehicle (IOV) and self-driving cars” in Michigan, Crain’s Detroit Business reported, citing published reports from Chinese news organizations.
“The Michigan investment will be unveiled soon, yet the transaction amount cannot be released,” Gou said in a report published by the Securities Times. Apple is currently building selfdriving car technology, and earned a California DMV permit in April to test prototypes on public roads. CEO Tim Cook confirmed soon after that the company was working on self-driving cars — “the mother of all AI projects.” Gou met over the weekend with Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder during Snyder’s trade mission to China to discuss the company’s potential investment in Michigan, China Daily reported. The Michigan governor confirmed his meeting with Gou in a statement issued by his office that suggested a significant jobs deal with Foxconn could be in the making. “I believe we have a strong future with Foxconn, and while I don’t have an announcement to make today, I think there are very exciting things to come in the future,” Snyder said. Snyder’s meeting with Gou came within nine days of Foxconn’s announced plans to build a massive 20-million-square-foot manufacturing campus in southeast Wisconsin, possibly in Racine or Kenosha counties, and employ 3,000 initially to assemble liquid crystal display screens. When Gou announced his company’s Wisconsin manufacturing plans on July 26, Snyder signed legislation designed to attract Foxconn and other companies to Michigan with an incentive that would allow employers to keep state income taxes generated by new jobs. Michigan’s so-called “Good Jobs”
www.faheyinc.com 503-620-9031 tax incentives include a provision that seemed to be written with Foxconn in mind allowing an employer to keep 100 percent of its employees’ state income taxes for up to 10 years if they paid above-average regional wages. In Wisconsin, the next meeting of the committee discussing the more than $3 billion state incentive package that would pave the way for Foxconn to build its giant complex will likely be up for discussion Aug. 10. The Taiwanese electronics manufacturing giant — Apple’s main manufacturing partner — said it will invest $10 billion to build the Wisconsin plant, which will make liquid crystal display panels. The Wisconsin plant will employ 3,000 workers to start, and that number could grow to 13,000 over time. The news follows a recent Wall Street Journal interview with President Donald Trump, who claimed that Apple CEO Tim Cook had promised him that the Cupertino-based company would build “three big plants — big, big, big” in the United States. Apple has not made any announcements of U.S. factories and has not responded publicly to the president’s comments. Apple typically doesn’t operate its own assembly lines, preferring instead to use contract facilities like Foxconn’s. — Silicon Valley Business Journal staff contributed to this report. Manufacturing is alive and well throughout the Bay Area. As a whole, the nine-county region boasts 347,620 manufacturing workers while the industry reflects approximately 10 percent of the local workforce from San Francisco and Silicon Valley to the East Bay and Wine Country, according to average monthly data from the California Employment Development Department for the third quarter of 2016. Local technology companies certainly drive much of the area’s production of goods — Santa Clara County’s computer and electronic products labor force alone (112,063) rivals the total manufacturing employment in all other Bay Area counties combined across all sectors (186,752). Beyond tech, however, other specialties crop up in the region, from food and apparel in San Francisco, pharmaceuticals on the Peninsula and in Marin and Solano counties, petroleum products in Contra Costa County and, yes, wine in Napa. Some Portland Companies Are Hiring Like Crazy In an interview, Adidas’ Mark King talked about various growth strategies that the company believes will propel it as its market share battle with the likes of Nike Inc. and Under Armour accelerates. Part of that strategy involves hiring. Lots and lots of hiring in lots and lots of areas.Worldwide, the company reported it had nearly 2,000 open jobs available. At least 100 of those are in Portland. Indeed, the company has effectively doubled its Oregon employee base over the last several years, from around 800 in 2014 to 1,700. It’s done so by spelling out specifically which types of workers it wants. For instance, in Portland, there’s a need for marketing and communications pros, product developers, financial whizzes and digital experts. Adidas is clearly navigating a brutal hiring field. Oregon’s unemployment rate, hovering just above 4 percent, has led to a talent crunch that’s sent many local companies scrambling. In just the past two days alone, Insitu, a Boeing-owned drone maker, confirmed it has around 100 jobs open in the Portland area. Procore, considered a “unicorn” company with massive sales potential, is also opening a Portland office that’ll hire as many as 25 workers. The job market continues to bustle in a state where the number of nonfarm workers jumped by 3 percent year-over-year in June. What’s more, the state counted fewer long-term unemployed residents: the number of Oregonians who unemployed for more than six months is the lowest on record, dating back to 2002. The total number of such residents was 10,700 in June. In contrast, the figure exceeded 100,000 in 2010, the aftermath of the Great Recession.

Helping Oregon’s University Research Meet Its Market Potential What do search engines, rocket fuel, pacemakers, bar codes, seatbelts, new strawberry varieties and Vitamin D fortification all have in common? Answer: all of these impor tant innovations began in universities and successfully survived the long journey from the laboratory into the commercial marketplace. Most people believe in the importance of innovation to solve problems, but many don’t understand the hurdles an innovation must overcome to reach consumers and achieve productization. To launch a university tech-based startup, a strong alignment of funding, business strategy, entrepreneurship and technical talent and a supportive technology transfer office must all co-exist. This combination isn’t easy to find. The good news is that, here in Oregon, we’re working to align these resources at the right time and with the best technologies. Oregon BEST, a state funded nonprofit, is helping ensure that Oregongrown cleantech innovation — including innovation at universities — has the chance to reach its fullest potential. Since 2011, the Portland-based economic development organization has been supporting and investing in tech startups and promising university R&D projects. In six years, $6 million of Oregon BEST investment has helped to secure an additional $58 million-plus of follow-on funding — a pretty good ROI. For example, Eugene-based NemaMetrix, a University of Oregon spinoff, uses nematodes, microfluidics and electrical measurements to quickly test for toxins in drug discovery. Oregon BEST funding helped the company apply the technology to detect environmental toxins. Last year, the company raised $1 million in a seed funding round in which Oregon BEST participated. One of the primary issues in taking technologies to market is latestage R&D funding. Federal grant dollars help with basic and earlystage research, but often there’s a funding gap for projects that help technologies become purchasable products and systems. To address this gap funding need, some states, including Oregon, have developed university venture development funds. These funds accept gifts from individuals and organizations in exchange for tax credits. Federal Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) funding, dubbed America’s Seed Fund, also can help to fill this gap (although formation of a startup is required). Other funding sources include philanthropic groups and organizations like Oregon BEST. One Oregon BEST recipient of late stage R&D funds is Oregon State University spinoff eChemion , a company with a technology that drives down the price of redox flow batteries while improving performance. The company was awarded about $200,000 of Oregon BEST funding, part of which was awarded at the pre-company formation research phase and another part at post-company formation. eChemion has been able
to raise $275,000 in follow-on financing and recently shipped products to its first customers. What other technology nuggets lie dormant in the laboratories of Oregon universities? In 2016, Oregon BEST decided to find out, launching a program to seek out “good for the planet” technologies, assess commercialization potential and award grants accordingly. A little over a year later, late-stage R&D projects addressing problems such as low crop yields, ineffective and harmful dyes, toxic materials in personal care products and more are underway. Two projects are on the cusp of company launch, and a range of other university based cleantech research and startups will be on display at BEST FEST 2017 on September 14th at Portland’s World Trade Center. In 20 years, perhaps our world will be a more sustainable, thriving place as a result of these visionary efforts that Oregon’s innovators are making today. Source: Portland Business Journal
Longshoremens’ Union Says Early Votes Show Labor Contract Extension For Seattle, Tacoma Ports Will Pass The International Longshore and Warehouse Union said that early West Coast election results show an existing labor contract with waterfront employers represented the Pacific Maritime Association will be extended by three years. As of late last month, the ILWU said it expected the contract extension
will pass by a 67 percent margin. Longshore workers represented by the ILWU load and unload ships at West Coast ports, and handle cargo in marine terminals and through terminal gates. A labor-management dispute in 2014 led to massive delays and congestion, caused by worker slowdowns, most notably at the Ports of Oakland, Long Beach, Portland, Tacoma and Seattle. The current ILWU-PMA contract would’ve expired on July 1, 2019. The union said wages would rise, health benefits would be retained and pensions increased, although it provided no details. The pact encompasses 29 ports, including Oakland, Los Angeles, Long Beach, Portland,Tacoma and Seattle, and includes 20,000 longshoremen on the West Coast. A labor-management dispute in 2014 led to massive delays and congestion, caused by worker slowdowns, most notably at the Ports of Oakland, Long Beach, Portland, Tacoma and Seattle. Negotiators for both sides signed a contract in 2015 and opened talks on extending the pact last year. “There was no shortage of differing views during the year-long debate leading up to this vote, and members didn’t take this step lightly,” ILWU President Bob McEllrath said. “The members made the final decision to extend the contract for three years,” to July 1, 2022. The new random access disc-type tool magazine allows high-speed 0.9 second tool-to-tool and 2.3 second chip-to-chip times. In addition to minimizing non-cutting time, this design also reduces vibration, resulting in more stable operation. In optimizing the construction of the machine, the footprint of the NHP has been reduced by 15% compared to the previous model, yet the machining area has been expanded by 24%. The three point leveling design makes machine installation and maintenance much more convenient. The center-through bed chip management evacuates large volumes of chips quickly for enhanced efficiency. The pallets can accommodate loads of up to 400kg (880 lbs), for the NHP 4000 and up to 500kg (1100 lbs) for the NHP 5000, and both throughpallet and overhead hydraulic fixturing options are available. Additionally, the APC has been refined to achieve a 27% faster indexing time.

As he moves forward with Aerovel, McGeer is looking to replicate his previous success.
DISCOVER THE SOURCE OF SUCCESS.
McGeer, a Stanford- and Princetoneducated aeronautical engineer and Aerovel’s founder, president and chief engineer, is feeling a lot of pressure these days. Lives may depend on how fast his Columbia Gorge-based company can perfect the Flexrotor and get it to the commercial market.

Innovator Of The Month: Aerovel’s Flexrotor Drone Could Save Your Life Tad McGeer’s eyes dart back and forth from the cockpit of his Cirrus airplane to the rippling green waters of the Columbia River thousands of feet below. When he spots what he’s looking for, he cracks a smile and banks the red-and-white plane sharply before negotiating a perfect landing at an airstrip in the middle of nowhere. This is where McGeer’s real flying begins. McGeer is a leading scientist in the development of drones, or what the industry calls “unmanned aerial vehicles.” He was the driving force behind Insitu, which began in a Silicon Valley garage in 1992 and moved to the Columbia River Gorge in 1994. It developed the now famous ScanEagle unmanned aerial system that has been used for surveillance in the Middle East since 2004. Insitu was sold to Boeing for a reported $400 million in 2008. His latest venture is a company called Aerovel. It has developed the Flexrotor, a small, unmanned vehicle that takes off and lands vertically — like a helicopter but in much smaller spaces — but can still fly like a regular aircraft once airborne. By the time that McGeer left Insitu in 2005, the Bingen-based company had more than 100 employees and more than $20 million in annual revenue. It was one of the fastest-growing technology firms in Washington state before Boeing acquired it. A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

“For every year we are not out in service, people literally die,” McGeer said. The Flexrotor can do jobs that right now are done by people flying helicopters into dangerous areas, such as Coast Guard searchers who look for troubled ships during storms. Flexrotor’s unique features are its ability to perform vertical takeoff and landings in confined spaces. A partnership with Hood Technology in Columbia Gorge has equipped the aircraft with powerful, highresolution imaging “turrets.” The Flexrotor sips gas to stay airborne for hours while transmitting video back to its ground operator. At the airstrip, McGeer and his team are subjecting Flexrotor to a battery of flight and systems tests. It takes off and lands flawlessly at a little used remote airstrip on the Washington-Oregon state border, a narrow band of airspace that sits between a highway and a restricted military facility. No one is watching Aerovel’s activities more closely than the handful of companies that operate the world’s Pacific tuna fishing fleet. The tuna fleet uses low-flying helicopters that patrol ocean waters to spot tuna and direct boats to fish-rich locations. The operations are expensive and often dangerous: There have been dozens of deadly helicopter
www.faheyinc.com 503-620-9031 accidents during these searches. “The tuna industry has a huge helicopter safety problem. Every fisherman has a story — a real story — about people dying in accidents,” McGeer said. “If we can operate all day long with nobody hurt or getting killed, and do it a lot less expensively than a helicopter, it’s real value proposition there.” The Flexrotor was used on a trial basis on one fishing boat in the Pacific last fall. McGeer’s phone started to ring almost immediately after word of trials spread.Thierry Le Guennec, an executive with Tri Marine Fishing Management of Bellevue, said his people are trying the Flexrotor on a ship in the Pacific. “The drone assisted us at catching about 500 metric tons of free school fish, about half the load,” Le Guennec said. “There is still some fine tuning needed but, overall, in the over 30-plus options that we considered during our original search, the Flexrotor is by far the most reliable long-distance tuna spotting drone available on the market.” Except it’s not on the market just yet. McGeer and his team need more time and as much as $20 million more to complete all the fine tuning. They recently crashed an aircraft, and he wants dispatch reliability rates to be better. You get that through hours and hours of tests and part failures, and all that costs money, he said. Skeptics in the aerospace world note that aviation is littered with failed vertical takeoff and landing aircraft (also commonly called “tailsitters) like the Corvair XFY Pogo and Lockheed XFV. Flexrotor’s small size has helped minimize the challenges vertical
take-off vehicles have faced, McGeer said. The U.S. Coast Guard would like the aircraft to help patrol for fish poachers and drug smugglers. Commercial shippers would like Flexrotor to help steer ships through the Arctic ice floes. Oil and gas companies would like it for reconnaissance and offshore oil work. U.S. government special operations forces would like it for their own unique operations. All have tried the aircraft in trials. The market Aerovel is trying to tap is huge and ripe with opportunity, according to investment management giant Goldman Sachs. Goldman Sachs Research has forecast that between now and 2020 there exists a $100 billion market opportunity for drones, a market helped by growing demand from the commercial and civil government sectors. About $70 billion of that estimated market covers military buyers and applications alone, Goldman Sachs said.“Defense will remain the largest market for the foreseeable future as global competition heats up and technology continues to improve,” the investment firm said. McGeer confirms that’s where the money is because the military cares more about performance and advantage than price. Unmanned aircraft have been the next big thing for decades, McGeer said, but the market hasn’t taken off because the cost to develop the technology has just been too high. “We’re getting significant military interest in the aircraft and that’s fine if they want it. We’re happy to oblige,” he said. “To make the civil side work is a bigger challenge.” Source: Puget Sound Business Journal A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

Vahana includes a parachute that automatically deploys in an emergency, saving the entire craft, and its passenger. It’s one of a handful of flying car prototypes floating around the Valley. Critics say self-driving cars, which are further along in development, will face a gauntlet of regulators and a skeptical public. The challenges around producing car-sized, self-flying drones will be even bigger.

The Pros And Cons Of Manufacturing In Portland The players in Portland’s manufacturing industry are diverse – almost as varied as their perspectives on being based in the Rose City. For some, Portland’s growing population of educated, skilled workers is promising; for others, rising costs of living and doing business in the city are creating serious hurdles. The manufacturing industry as a whole, though, is growing, despite what many assume. Ball State University’s Center for Business and Economic Research found that U.S. manufacturing production has grown 11 percent since the dot.com boom and despite the 2007-09 recession. The study’s author, Michael Hicks, said he expects 2017 to be a record year for manufacturing. The CBER also puts out an annual state-by-state report card grading manufacturing and logistics performances. Oregon earned a “B+” in the manufacturing category, consistent from the previous year and suggesting that the state has room for improvement when it comes to the share of manufacturing employment per capita, wages paid to manufacturing employees versus other workers and the share of total income earned by manufacturing employees. But the state also earned an “A” in productivity and innovation in manufacturing. Many believe U.S. manufacturing will continue to grow due to increasing A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST • 22 • AUG - SEPT 2017
labor costs in competing countries and technological advancement; however, uncertainty surrounding the fate of free trade in the U.S. and elsewhere could throw a wrench in the demand for manufactured goods. The Business Journal recently gathered the CEOs of five local manufacturing companies to talk about the state of the industry and their expectations for the future of manufacturing in Portland. Here are three takeaways from that conversation: Innovation is exciting, but for manufacturers, innovation is only part of the equation. Often an equally (if not more) difficult step is getting others to buy into the idea, a struggle familiar to several local companies. “We created something incredibly groundbreaking and novel, disruptive, and that is every entrepreneur’s dream,” said RevMedx CEO Andrew Barofsky of the company’s device designed to better heal gunshot wounds. “But it also brings challenges with respect to changing, in our case, the practice of medicine.” According to Peggy Miller of PacStar Communications, this is something her company is trying to combat with “program of record” contracts. These major, multi-year contracts would mean the company won’t have to work so hard to secure projects on an annual basis, and could instead focus on maintaining quality while ramping up production. PacStar, which develops advanced communication technology for troops to take into the field, won two programs of record within the past two years:
one with the U.S. Army and another with the Marine Corps. For APDM Wearable Technologies, CEO Matthew Johnson said the challenge lies both in changing clinical practice and the behavior of the consumers who will wear its products. “You’re changing industry practices and that takes a long time,” Johnson said. “You’re changing culture, how someone was trained, it’s a long road ahead.” APDM’s products track users’ movements and other data, creating the added ethical challenge of interacting with big data companies. “This idea of big data has just kind of taken this health care world without really thinking, ‘Why do we need it? How do we obtain it? What’s the value to everyone across the chain?’” Johnson said.
And while the manufacturing cluster in Portland is not as large as in some other cities, industry leaders say it does make operating here easier.
CRAFTSMANSHIP. ON TIME.
Portland – and Oregon more generally – is home to several business “clusters,” most notably: the outdoor retail industry.
FABRICATION
“It’s the only reason that we were able to settle here,” said Ryan Coulter, CEO of the James Brand, one of several Portland-area knife manufacturing companies. “It was a foundational part of us trying to decide whether there was viability for this business, because there was a lot we didn’t know how to do and we were going to depend on this community to make it happen.” Coulter said he learned from similar companies when starting his business, and the local industry made it easier to find employees. Now, there’s a “friendly rivalry” and a group of manufacturers that meet up for beers at tradeshows, he said.
MACHINING
And the benefit is not just from the local manufacturing cluster – technology, health care and a group of companies catering to the Department of Defense all add value by making it easier to find skilled employees. “In our technical positions, pretty much everybody has come from one of the other larger medical device producers in the region, and all of our production people, our quality managers,” Barofsky said. “I think if Portland were completely devoid of those types of companies, then we wouldn’t have been able to do what we do here.”
ASSEMBLY
Speaking of life in Stumptown: it’s getting more expensive. Portland has become a leading destination for people around the world looking to move, especially those who are young and educated. And while this influx of people is good news for the economy, it also means housing supply is tightening and costs are going up.
CORE CAPABILITIES:
Supporting employees who need more money to live is hard for a small company, Coulter said. The James Brand has had trouble retaining employees; the company hires and trains young staffers, only to lose them once they’re unable to match salaries offered by competitors, he said. Nonetheless, Portland maintains its draw and the potential for a growing manufacturing industry. Source: Portland Business Journal

In an NFL First, Patriots Buy Their Own Planes: Two Boeing 767 Jets The New England Patriots are taking their game to the sky. In a first for any National Football League team, the Patriots have purchased two 767 Boeing wide-body jets and retrofitted them, according to ESPN, citing sources. According to the report: “One plane will be used as the main plane for the season, while the other will be the backup, with flight operations being run out of Providence, Rhode Island, sources said. Patriots spokesman Stacey James said team officials would not be publicly commenting on the acquisitions.” The planes, depending on a variety of factors, generally cost between $5 million and $65 million, ESPN reported. A brand-new plane could reportedly cost $200 million.

Westinghouse Reaffirms Commitment to Delivering the Nuclear Promise In a speech delivered to the American Nuclear Society UtilityWorking Conference andVendorTechnology Expo Westinghouse Electric Company President, Americas Region David Howell, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to Delivering the Nuclear Promise. A multiyear strategic plan commissioned by the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI), Delivering the Nuclear Promise seeks to transform the nuclear industry and ensure its viability for consumers as well as its essential role in protecting the environment. One example of Delivering the Nuclear Promise fromWestinghouse’s spring outage season was the deployment of the Zephyr® Advanced Acquisition System at Arizona Public Service Company’s Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station inWintersburg, Arizona. In an industry-first, the Zephyr System successfully examined 100 percent of the tubes in a steam generator from a single plenum, using revolutionary probe delivery to more rapidly perform highquality eddy current examinations, and ensuring safe, economic and efficient operation.
Sergey Brin’s Secretive Project To Build The World’s Largest Aircraft Google cofounder Sergey Brin is secretly building an airship in Mountain View that will be the largest aircraft on the planet once it’s complete, the Guardian reports, citing unnamed sources.
Brin’s airship is reportedly being built at Moffett Field, inside Hangar 2 at the NASA Ames Research Center.
The airship under development will reportedly measure nearly 200 meters long, or a little over two football fields. If that’s true, that would make it the largest aircraft in operation today. By comparison, the ill-fated Hindenburg— the largest aircraft ever built — clocked in at 245 meters long.
The more likely scenario will be that Brin flies himself and his guests around the Bay Area in luxury. By comparison, the last sightseeing airship to operate in the Bay Area, the 12-passenger Airship Ventures that was in business from 2008 to 2012, was just 75 meters long.
T he project will cost $100 million to $150 million to complete, the Guardian reports.
Brin hasn’t said why he’s building the airship. Airships could be used to deliver cargo and people to remote areas of the planet on humanitarian missions: Unlike trucks, trains and airplanes, which require roads, rails and landing strips, Brin’s airship would only need a 200-meter-long clearing.
In the airship’s heyday of the 1920s and 1930s, the public envisioned skies filled with airships of all sizes, delivering people and cargo to their final destinations without the need for any infrastructure below. In that way, airships and self-flying drones share some similarities. The challenge was that airships were slow ( an experimental airship commissioned by the U.S. military in 2012 tops out at 92 mph), couldn’t fly in bad weather and carried less cargo-per-pound than conventional jets. Faraday Future Puts The Brakes On Nevada Factory Plans Faraday Future is halting plans to build a $1 billion factory in North Las Vegas.
Faraday had been supported by LeEco chief Jia Yueting, who invested $300 million of his own money in the company. But Yueting stepped down as CEO in May amid mass layoffs and a botched U.S. expansion in Silicon Valley, and resigned as chairman at the company’s publicly traded arm last week. A Shanghai court froze $182 million of his assets earlier this month when LeEco didn’t make some loan payments. The Nevada project isn’t the first Faraday factory to hit the skids. The company pulled the plug on a massive California factory in March after the splashy debut of its FF91 luxury vehicle at CES in January. Source: L.A. Biz

Instead, the Tesla rival plans to build its manufacturing operations in an existing building in California or Nevada in order to deliver a vehicle by the end of next year. Faraday Future has continued to struggle since the splashy debut of its FF91 luxury vehicle at CES in January. Faraday will hold onto the 940-acre plot in the Apex Industrial Park in North LasVegas for a future plant. “We at Faraday Future are significantly shifting our business strategy to position the company as the leader in user-ship personal mobility — a vehicle usage model that reimagines the way users access A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

Boeing secured commitments for a slew of potential orders worth more than $40 billion at list prices in Paris at the Air Show.
But don’t count on those deals just yet. In commercial aerospace, a commitment means a buyer wants to order airplanes but hasn’t signed a formal contract or reached a final agreement on price or other details. The last day of the air show brought Boeing’s biggest commitment, worth more than $14 billion at list prices. Truck Giant Paccar Plans To Open Innovation Center In Silicon Valley Bellevue-based tr uc k manufacturing giant Paccar says it will open an advanced technology research and development center in Silicon Valley later this year. The center will coordinate next-generation product development and identify emerging technologies that will benefit future vehicle performance, the company said. “Paccar is a technology leader in the commercial vehicle industry and is investing in the next generation of automotive technologies,” CEO Ron Armstrong said in a news release which mentioned the project. The Paccar Innovation Center will include state-of-the-art laboratory and workshop facilities, and office space, the company said. Technology areas of focus at the new center will include advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), artificial intelligence, vehicle connectivity and augmented reality. “Paccar looks forward to expanding its partnerships with technology companies in SiliconValley,” said Darrin Siver, a Paccar senior vice president. George West, another Paccar vice president, said the truck maker is planning to spend and invest $250 million to $270 million this year on research and development to support new product development, enhanced manufacturing facilities and its aftermarket support programs. For the first half of 2017, Paccar reported that it made a $683.3 million profit on $8.94 billion in revenue. Paccar CFO Harrie Schippers said the truck manufacturer has added 1,200 new jobs in the U.S so far this year, thanks to stronger parts sales and increasing truck production in North America and Europe. The company, which is the maker of Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks, also said it is spending $35 million on a new 160,000 square-foot truck parts distribution center in Toronto. That facility is currently under construction and is expected to open in mid-2018, said David Danforth, a vice president and general manager of Paccar Parts. Source: Puget Sound Business Journal

ULA leads the launch industry worldwide in reliability, with 117 consecutive successful space launches. “Technical credibility and signed deals remain key differentiators for Astrobotic as a lunar delivery company. Our customers and partners know that our 10 years of lunar lander development work has made us the world leader in this market,” Thornton said. Arstrobotics is working with ULA, NASA, shipping logistics company DHL, aircraft manufacturer Airbus and others to establish its Peregrine Lunar Lander transport service. It charges $1.2 million per pound for moon access, offering multiple payloads delivered to the surface on each flight. ULA has stiff competition from Elon Musk’s SpaceX for rocket launches to low-earth orbit, where most satellites and the International Space Station fly. But ULA has experience launching missions with precision deeper into space using its Centaur upper stage rocket engine. clinical use.
Now they’re on track to launch the first automated earwax r e m ov a l d e v i c e f o r
The SafKan OtoSet is an automated, wearable earwax removal device developed by SafKan Health. The OtoSet’s disposable silicone nozzles spray saline solution against the outer walls of the ear canal while sucking the solution and wax back into the single-use nozzles, which collect it all for disposal. OtoSet removes impacted earwax in about five minutes versus 20 to 30 minutes for traditional removal with a syringe. Shaving earwax with a metal scoop takes even longer. “Time saved by our device now makes this procedure profitable for providers and encourages them to offer it to more patients who need it,” said Sahil. “We want to make our SafKan OtoSet the standard of care.” About 12 million Americans go to the doctor’s office each year for ear cleanings, according to the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery Foundation. Excess or impacted earwax affects about 10 percent of children, 5 percent of adults and up to 57 percent of senior citizens. Dr. Jonathan Overdevest, rhinology and skull base fellow at Stanford University, said while he hasn’t used the device, he predicts it’ll have plenty of buyers if it works safely at an attractive price. “We are generally receptive to innovative approaches that may reduce harm, shorten wait times, and improve our practice of medicine,” he said. SafKan won first prize and $145,000 at the Seattle Angel Conference in May, beating out 42 other entrants and bringing its total funding to $175,000. The Seattle-based company is seeking another $575,000 in seed funding over the next few months. Sahil expects its first clinical trial to be done as early as September, which would put SafKan on track for FDA clearance to sell the device in the second quarter of 2018.

The B-21 Raider stealth bomber is expected to add between $1 billion and $2 billion a year to Northrop Grumman’s top line over the life of the military aircraft program. The company beat Boeing to win the huge contract. The aerospace giant, which also makes unmanned sea and air vehicles, says it wants to meet small businesses in manufacturing, engineering and other industries.
“They’ve identified Seattle is a strong place to find good suppliers,” said Tiffany Scroggs, program director with Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) within the Thurston County Economic Development Council. “Representatives from all three of their business units will be here for the first time so we’re excited they’re coming.” Participants will hear how to do business with the major defense contractor and get the chance to meet one-on-one with Northrop Grumman representatives. After registering, businesses will be invited to sign up for one-on-one or small group meetings with Northrop Grumman representatives by taking a survey indicating what products or services they sell. The Thurston Economic Development Council said every effort will be made to match companies and their executives with an appropriate contact at Northrop Grumman, a company that has 50,000 employees and operations in 50 states. PTAC officials say they’ve helpedWashington state companies secure more than $453 million in government contracts over the past year. The Thurston PTAC is funded in part through a cooperative agreement from the Department of Defense under a program that is administered by the Defense Logistics Agency, the military’s procurement arm.
The council provides free and confidential, one-on-one technical assistance in all aspects of selling to federal, state, and local governments. The Council’s PTAC also hosts procurement training classes and seminars, and helps businesses register with the correct databases in order to compete for government contracts. Announces Its New State-Of-The-Art Facility
Foresight Finishing is not just Nadcap accredited. They are Nadcap accredited and have consecutively received two-year ‘Merit’; they are looking forward to the same success in their upcoming audit in August 2017. At Foresight Finishing, all orders are processed under Nadcap guidelines and certified regardless of customer requirement; you simply can’t operate with two quality standards. The company, Nadcap accredited to AC7004 and AC7108 (for Chemical Processing and Aerospace Quality System) specializes in plating precision components with tolerances tight as +/- .0002.The finished parts pictured on the next page are .1481” in length and .012” in diameter. There are 10,000 parts in the container. The company is focused on the connector and RF industry, which means their facility Is designed around this market from the plating lines, processes, controls, quality systems and inspection equipment. Foresight also provides selective plating of loose piece contacts. Their plating expertise includes Gold, Silver, Nickel, Electroless nickel, and Bright tin, on red metal alloys (i.e. Copper/Brass) and Stainless Steel. The majority of their end customers hail from the aerospace and defense industries. Foresight Finishing opened for business nearly 7 years ago, and is co-owned by brothers Casey and Joe Weizel.Though the business is relatively young, both Casey and Joe have a combined thirty-one years in the plating industry, the majority of it in their hometown of Minneapolis, MN. They credit some of their success to Steve Forsythe, their mentor, along with various other people that have impacted their careers. It was through Steve that Casey, Joe, and Joe’s wife Stephanie, were mentored in finishing. Sadly, Steve passed away, but his memory lives on. Foresight Finishing was founded in 2010 with a start-up team of 3. The company launched in Tempe, Arizona, where the new company’s largest customer was located.Today, the company has grown to 32 employees and it operates 2 shifts. Its phenomenal growth has meant that the company just moved to a new larger, state of the art finishing facility, nearly 25% larger than its previous location, and the new building is owned by the company. Though Foresight Finishing still does work for the customer that helped launch their business, today the company is quite diversified in the customers it serves. Casey says, “We have a number of customers on the East and West coasts, and though we are based in Arizona, few of our customers are located here. We’d like to expand our local customer base.” The Weizel brothers recognize the value of their employees to the businesses success. Casey says, “90% of our staff has been with us for 3+ years.” Prior to a new employee coming into the business, they are typically interviewed three times – once by each of the brother/owners and then A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

once by the supervisor. “We want very specific types of individuals to join our team”, Joe says. “They have to have a ‘can do’ work ethic and understand we are a service oriented company. We prefer that they don’t have plating/ finishing backgrounds but manufacturing of other basis is encouraged. We want our supervisors and lead platers to help mentor them in the ‘Foresight Finishing’ methodology and embrace continual improvement.” Casey says, “Our move to the state of the art new facility will undoubtedly be valuable to our customers, but it is also very beneficial to our loyal team members and like everything else is part of our continual improvement efforts. It offers a better work environment, from the rest rooms, to the temperature controlled areas, to the break rooms, and lastly they will be working with the very best high tech equipment.” Casey and Joe both know first hand what it is like to work in a finishing environment that has poorly laid out lines and older equipment. “We buy the equipment needed to reduce bottlenecks and to increase the productivity”, Casey says. He continued, “Some of the newest equipment that is being added to the new facility includes new X-ray machines, that will fit in with our existing testing equipment that includes; Atomic Absorption, heat testing oven, steam age and solder units.” Since many of Foresight Finishing’s customers require heat treating, which they are doing in house, or sending to outside suppliers, they have asked Foresight Finishing to add this to their scope of work under the Nadcap guidelines. The heat treatment oven will be under vacuum and inert atmosphere. Automated hardness and polishing testing equipment will provide the ease of cross training and controlled processes for employees. Joe says, “The finishing industry requires strict environmental regulation. The city of Tempe monitors our effluent water each quarter, and we consistently meet or exceed their requirements. We view this as just another part of the business that we have responsibility for. It’s not just about ensuring the safety of our employees, but it is also about the safety of our neighbors.” He added, “There is a right way and a wrong way to run a finishing business. We are deliberate in our business growth – you can’t add new finishing processes without first adding the infrastructure.” Joe says, “Casey and I came from manufacturing/finishing. We
know that we don’t know everything there is to run a successful business, so we surround ourselves with people who are exper ts in their given field.” Casey adds, “Todd was our Nadcap consultant and conducted our internal audits. It was apparent that Todd would be a great addition to our team when we first meet.” Todd says, “I made the decision to come to Foresight Finishing because I saw something very special in the owners and the team. There is a powerful sense of cooperation that is conducive to the company’s success – I wanted to be a part of it.” The owners at Foresight Finishing know that plating can be considered risky management in the precision manufacturing industry, and their goal is to ensure that Foresight Finishing doesn’t fit the industry reputation. Casey says, “We are an extension of our customers’ business. A value added service we offer includes, pre and in-process inspection of parts to ensure that the parts will meet their post plate dimensional requirements. We pride ourselves on the service we provide, but our quality speaks for itself. Foresight has a 1/1 ratio of inspectors to platers due to our stringent in process quality checks. We invest aggressively in our support departments for production. When you don’t, it then becomes the bottleneck.” Foresight Finishing accreditations include Nadcap, ITAR, RoHS, to ‘assuring no use of Conflict Metals’, and they serve to make customers more confident in their abilities, but nothing says more than testimonials from customers, particularly when they are sent to the company without request.
Here are some comments from customers: “Thank you all! You guys are amazing and we appreciate the continued incredible effort by the entire team at Foresight.” “Thanks Casey, good luck with the move. We did it a couple years ago. Foresight has been an exceptional vendor. We appreciate all you have done.” “Thanks, by far the fastest quotes of all suppliers I have! Appreciate it!”

The Manufacturer’s Secret Weapon Manufacturing – The Bigger Picture By Stephen Hannemann Machining, precision sheet metal, injection m o l d i n g , fabrication, finishing, circuit boards, wire and wire harnesses – big business all. E ve r y c o m p a ny providing these services considers themselves manufacturers – and rightly so. H oweve r, m o s t of those houses are ser vicing component needs of their customers, parts that make a sub-assembly or a critical widget that makes something l a r g e r. P a r t s Hover Refill Pump for an airplane, a Kawak Aviation Technologies – Bend, OR s p a c e ve h i c l e, a ship, an automobile – describes things on the larger scale. On the flip side are small or micro components for medical devices used in heart, eye or brain surgery. All are portions of a bill of material – a BOM, delivered to a parent manufacturer. That is the easy part. Now these component producers will probably take issue with the easy part statement, for many are complicated and difficult parts with exacting requirements. But bear with me. Every machined, sheet metal, or injection molded part or a bajillion other components have a genesis. First they must be designed by an army of designers and engineers, prototyped and tested. Then the fun begins. The bajillion components have to be sourced by a platoon of buyers, purchasing agents, and sourcing specialists. But first the suppliers must be vetted for their quality and on time delivery track record over time. Oh yes, they have to have competitive pricing, not a minor detail. A great deal of effort is expended to make sure the BOM is within the budget constraints and the supply
chain is reliable. A line down will be catastrophic. Enter the managers of the programs, production, supply chains, inventory, and production engineers. Theirs is the responsibility to see to the design of the production line and manage a BOM that ranging from a few part numbers to a document resembling a New York City phone book! They manage inventory which in turn has great impact on the company’s cash flow and overall profit. They are the ones that identify and eliminate bottlenecks, keep the production lines running to ensure smooth and efficient throughput. As with the buying contingent, they are the unsung heroes of manufacturing. So, on your next business or vacation flight, or car trip to purchase that piece of hardware or furniture, think about “the bigger picture of manufacturing,” the logistics of producing that airplane, car or millions of other products we easily take for granted and fail to consider how they came to be. 3D Printing Mind Meld: How GE And A 3D-Printing Visionary Joined Forces
by Tomas Kellner
Few people know more about 3D printing than G re g M o r r i s. T h e entrepreneur bought his first stereolithography machine back in 1994, when 3D printers were still largely confined to univer sity labs and research centers. That machine allowed Morris to print polymer parts layer by layer directly from a drawing inside a computer. After his first taste for this emerging technology, Morris wanted more. He acquired an early 3D printer for metals that used a laser beam to fuse together fine layers of metal powder. The machine was useful for rapid prototyping, but he also saw the technology’s potential for mass production. He would go on to launch what we now call additive manufacturing. His company, Morris Technologies, was based in Cincinnati, and by 2003, word about his project had spread around town. This was propitious timing for engineers at GE Aviation, which is based in Cincinnati’s northern suburb of Evendale. At the time, they were developing an efficient fuel nozzle for a new jet engine, but the design was so complex they had trouble producing it. It had more than 20 parts that had to be welded and brazed together. “We tried to cast it eight times, and we failed every time,” recalls Mohammad Ehteshami, who now runs GE Additive, a new GE business dedicated to supplying 3D printers, materials and engineering consulting services. When Morris agreed to help, the GE engineers sent him a secret computer file with the drawing of the intricate nozzle tip. He printed it from a nickel A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

alloy and invited the team over a few days later. “I remember that day like today,” Ehteshami told GE Reports. “I was excited but also disturbed. I knew that we found a solution, but I also saw that this technology could eliminate what we’ve done for years and years and put a lot of pressure on our financial model.” We caught up with Morris at the GE Additive pavilion at the Paris Air Show in June. Take a look. Morris combined all 20 parts into a single unit that weighed 25 percent less than its predecessors and was more than five times as durable. “In the design of jet engines, complexity used to be expensive,” Ehteshami says. “But additive allows you to get sophisticated and reduces costs at the same time. This is an engineer’s dream. I never imagined that this would be possible.” But to make this dream a reality requires more than new machines, says Morris, who sold his business to GE and now works with Ehteshami. “You also need a new design mindset,” Morris says. “There’s an epiphany that happens after working with the technology for a little while. You start to realize you have this design freedom available to you that allows you to think about your designs with much more freedom than the traditional constraints of manufacturing, such a machining or casting. When that happens, then you become very creative.” That’s why GE Additive is opening “centers of excellence” where

customers can take the technology for a spin. “When we pull engineers and designers into the courses, we first spend a week deprogramming what they are used to in traditional design,” Morris says. “Then we start to build the foundation of thinking about additive and designing in an entirely new way.” That way can include cribbing ideas from nature, an approach called bionic design. “We take the basic mechanical function of a component or, ideally, of a system or a product, and then incorporate some of these, what you would say, bionic designs or some of these very nature-inspired lattice structures,” Morris says. “What you end up with is something that looks very organic many times, but not always. It gives you a performance of a part that’s better, maybe it gives you light weight — it certainly will drive cost down in many instances.” The nozzle that Morris first printed certainly did the trick. It now serves inside the LEAP jet engine developed by CFM International, a 50-50 joint venture between GE Aviation and Safran Aircraft Engines. Planes powered by the LEAP already have carried more than 5 million passengers, and the CFM has received orders for more than 14,500 LEAPs valued at $210 billion. The 3D-printed nozzle helped contribute to the 15 percent improved fuel efficiency of the LEAP engine, compared with the previous CFM engine.
an economic success. He called me, and he said they are going forward.” During last year’s heated presidential campaign, Cook was a supporter of Trump rival Hillary Clinton. But since the Republican’s victory, Cook has tried to keep an open attitude toward working with Trump, despite the administration’s policies on the environment and immigration — two areas where Cook has publicly disagreed with the president.
Trump: Apple’s Cook Promises To Build 3 ‘Beautiful’ Manufacturing Plants In U.S.
Trump, of course, has made homegrown manufacturing a priority and has challenged tech leaders to create more products in the United States rather than in other countries where the cost of labor is cheaper. Apple, for its part, does some manufacturing in the United States through contractors, but does the bulk of its assembly work in China.
Apple CEO Tim Cook has committed to building three manufacturing facilities in the United States, President Donald Trump said last month. Trump dropped that piece of news in an interview with the Wall Street Journal and said Cook made the promise to him directly.
Coincidentally, one of Apple’s main Chinese partners — Foxconn Technology Group — is near a decision to open a U.S. plant in Wisconsin. An announcement on that may take place Wednesday.
According to Trump, Apple’s chief executive said the company would build “three big plants, beautiful plants” but the president didn’t elaborate on where they would be built or when it would happen.
Earlier this year, Cook announced that Apple was creating a $1 billion fund to foster advanced U.S. manufacturing. The first company to benefit from that fund was Corning, which got $200 million.
“I spoke to [Mr. Cook], he’s promised me three big plants—big, big, big,” Trump told the Journal. “I said you know, Tim, unless you start building your plants in this country, I won’t consider my administration
Apple did not issue an immediate comment on Trump’s comments or its potential plans to build plants in the United States. Silicon Valley Business Journal A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •
