QualiChem, Inc. and Star Metal Fluids would like to thank all of our customers in Arizona and Utah who have responded to the call to help fight the COVID-19 virus. We are aware that there are multiple companies in each state participating in programs that include COVID-19 test kits, personal protective equipment, and ventilator components. While most of these companies do not want to be singled out or recognized by name, we believe it important enough to the local manufacturing community that their contributions not go without thanks. Your friends, your neighbors, your peers, and perhaps in some cases, your competitors, are doing what they can to ensure we get back to a more normal way of life. American manufacturers of all sizes, from all regions and industries, are stepping up to fight this invisible enemy. Whether redirecting resources toward production of open-source face shields, ventilator components, or test kits, Americans are heeding the call. And while we thank these manufacturers, it is more important to acknowledge the real heroes in this battle: the healthcare professionals, the pharmacists, the truckers, the grocery store employees, and all those who remain engaged with the public despite the risks. Together, as Americans in all capacities, we will overcome. Thank you to everyone for doing their share. Sincerely, The management teams at QualiChem, Inc. and Star Metal Fluids

Foresight Finishing Has Placed Itself At The Forefront Of The New Push In The Electronics Industry To Not Only “We all do better when we work together. Our differences do matter, but our Be Nadcap Accredited For Plating, common humanity matters more.” Bill Clinton But Also Nadcap Accredited For Heat What our country would look like if there were more cooperation, Treat “If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with your enemy. Then he becomes your partner.” Nelson Mandela

particularly in our government today. Cooperation is, after all, one of the most widely taught skills. At an early age, we are taught “united we stand, divided we fall.” Cooperation means to work together to achieve a common goal. In the workplace this means a healthy environment in which employees work side by side to achieve both personal and organizational objectives. They must work with others, instead of against each other, to be productive.

So how does cooperation happen in a person? Is a person innately cooperative; in other words is it a personality trait? Studies say cooperation is indeed a personality trait. It is one of the “character” dimensions in Cloninger’sTemperament and Character Inventory (Dr. C. Cloninger developed an integrative bio psychosocial model of human personality). Through this model, cooperativeness is assessed with five subscales in the Temperament and Character Inventory: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Social acceptance vs. intolerance Empathy vs. social disinterest Helpfulness vs. unhelpfulness Compassion vs. revengefulness Principles vs. self-advantage

In business, cooperation is always advantageous. It improves overall employee performance and organizational productivity. In a team, each employee is responsible for success. It is a combination of strengths, which can also lead to minimizing individual weaknesses. In this case, the strengths and weaknesses of team members can enhance and complement each other. With team cooperation, everyone’s morale will get naturally boosted once there is a healthy work environment, improving employee motivation and ultimately incline everyone towards the achievement of organizational goals, visions, and objective. A Stanford study from a few years ago found that even the mere perception of working collectively on a task can supercharge our performance. Participants in the research who were primed to act collaboratively stuck at their task 64% longer than their solitary peers, while also reporting higher engagement levels, lower fatigue levels and a higher success rate. What’s more, this impact persisted for several weeks. A similar finding emerged from a recent joint study between the Institute for Corporate Productivity and Rob Cross, Edward A. Madden Professor of Global Business at Babson College. Its study examined more than 1000 companies, and found that companies that promoted collaborative working were 5 times as likely to be high performing. I have interviewed hundreds of small manufacturing companies in my past 15 years in this industry. Intuitively, I can attest to the value of cooperation in these companies. It appears that business owners and managers who value teamwork and cooperation tend to have organizations with much lower turn over. People, it seems, value working in a healthy, cooperative environment. In closing, I wish you all the best during this difficult period in all of our lives. Hang on to those great employees and encourage an environment where cooperation thrives. God bless our troops and our front line workers.

Announcements & Releases ELFA 2020 Survey of Equipment Finance Activity Reports New Business Volume Grew 10.5% in 2019 New business volume grew 10.5% in the equipment finance industry in 2019, according to the 2020 Survey of Equipment Finance Activity (SEFA) released by the Equipment Leasing and Finance Association (ELFA).The rise in new business volume marked the 10th consecutive year that businesses increased their spending on capital equipment. The 2020 SEFA covers key statistical, financial and operations information for the $900 billion equipment finance industry, based on a comprehensive survey of 100 ELFA member companies. While the report does not reveal the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the equipment finance industry—as it focuses on data from fiscal year 2019—it provides insight into multiple aspects of the industry, as well as the state of the industry preceding the pandemic. Survey Highlights Key findings for 2019 as reported in the 2020 SEFA include: • New business volume grew 10.5% in 2019. The rise was stronger than the 4.4% increase achieved in 2018, and considerably stronger than the growth of the nation’s GDP, reported at 2.3% for 2019 by the U.S. Department of Commerce. • By organization type, banks saw a 12.8% increase in new business volume, independents saw an 8.4% increase and captives saw a 6.9% increase. By market segment, new business volume grew 20.0% in the large ticket segment, 9.0% in middle ticket and 8.1% in small ticket. • From an asset perspective, the top-five most-financed equipment types were transportation, IT and related technology services, construction, agricultural and industrial/manufacturing. The top five end-user industries representing the largest share of new business volume were services, agriculture, wholesale/retail, industrial and manufacturing, and transportation. • Delinquencies edged up in 2019 to 2.1%, from 1.8% in 2018. Delinquencies have been on the rise since 2013 when only 1.2% of receivables were over 31 day past due. • Charge-offs increased marginally overall to 0.3% of average receivables in 2019. • Credit approvals remained steady year-over-year, as did the percentage of those approved applications being booked. • Employment levels grew slightly by 1.2%. ELFA also released a companion report to the 2020 SEFA called the 2020 Small-Ticket Survey of Equipment Finance Activity. The report, which focuses on small-ticket and micro-ticket equipment transactions among the SEFA respondents, found that new business volume in the small-ticket space grew by 5.8% in 2019. PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP administered the 2020 SEFA. The results were compiled from surveys sent to 352 eligible ELFA member companies in the first quarter of 2020. US Gives First-Ever Ok For Small Commercial Nuclear Reactor BOISE, Idaho (AP) — U.S. officials have for the first time approved a design for a small commercial nuclear reactor, and a Utah energy cooperative wants to build 12 of them in Idaho. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission on Friday approved Portland-based NuScale Power’s application for the small modular reactor that Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems plans to build at a U.S. Department of Energy site in eastern Idaho. The small reactors can produce about 60 megawatts of energy, or enough to power more than 50,000 homes. The proposed project includes 12 small modular reactors. The first would be built in 2029, with the rest in 2030. NuScale says the reactors have advanced safety features, including self-cooling and automatic shutdown. “This is a significant milestone not only for NuScale, but also for the entire U.S. nuclear sector and the other advanced nuclear technologies that will follow,” said NuScale Chairman and Chief Executive Officer John Hopkins in a statement. Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems already has agreements with the Energy Department to build the reactors at the federal agency’s 890-square-mile (2,300-square-kilometer) site that includes Announcements Continued Page 8

Announcements Continued the Idaho National Laboratory, a nuclear research facility that would help with the development of the reactors. The Department of Energy has spent more than $400 million since 2014 to hasten the development of the small modular reactors, or SMRs. “DOE is proud to support the licensing and development of NuScale’s Power Module and other SMR technologies that have the potential to bring clean and reliable power to areas never thought possible by nuclear reactors in the U.S., and soon the world,” said Rita Baranwal, assistant secretary for Nuclear Energy. The energy cooperative has embarked on a plan called the Carbon Free Power Project that aims to supply carbon-free energy to its nearly 50 members, mostly municipalities, in six Western states. The company plans to buy the reactors from NuScale, then assemble them in Idaho. The company is also looking to bring on other utilities that would use the power generated by the reactors. Cooperative “members themselves would use a portion of the electricity, but other utilities would become involved and purchase power,” said LaVarr Webb, spokesman for the cooperative. He said not all the power that will be produced from the proposed reactors has been allocated, but he expects more interest with the U.S. approval of NuScale’s design. He said the next step is for the cooperative to submit a combined construction and operating license application to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The process also includes an environmental analysis. Webb said the cooperative will likely have that ready within two years. The first small modular reactor is scheduled to come online in 2029, with 11 more to follow in 2030.

The Institute for Supply Management’s PMI rose To 56% In August

Manufacturing and the overall economy continued to grow in August, according to the Institute for Supply Management’s August report on business. Their purchasing manager’s index for manufacturers grew to 56.0% in August, an increase of 1.8 points from July. The ISM’s production index rose to 63.3%, up 1.2 points from July. New orders and prices both increased by more than 6 points in August, as the new orders index rose 6.1 points to 67.6% and prices increased 6.3 points to 59.5%. The PMI, new orders, production, and prices indexes all grew for a third month running since pandemic-related contraction in April and May. Trade picked up for the second month in a row in August as the new export orders index grew to 53.3% and the imports index rose to 55.6%. Suggesting resurgent demand, the ISM’s index tracking order backlog rose 2.8 points to 54.6% as it, too, increased for a second straight month while supplier deliveries slowed for a tenth. “Demand and consumption continued to drive expansion growth, A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

with inputs remaining at parity with supply and demand,” said Timothy Fiore, CEO of ISM. Contraction in manufacturing employment slowed but did not move into growth territory in August, sustaining a 13-month trend of shrinking workforce numbers. The ISM’s employment index for August is 46.4%, 2.1 points higher than it was in July. Quoted respondents to the August ISM survey were more optimistic than they were in June and July as the recovery maintained its course. “Business is very good,” wrote a chemical products CEO. “Production cannot keep up with demand.” A plastics & rubber products executive reported “solid month-over-month order improvement in all manufacturing sectors” and said they were looking to hire more factory operators. Others reported continued difficulty, the result both of renewed demand as well as the lingering virus. A respondent from the food, beverage, and tobacco products industry said that ramping up production has been a struggle. “We have started and stopped lines numerous times at all 18 of our manufacturing plants due to COVID-19 issues,” they wrote. A member of the transportation equipment industry noted that pressure on airline manufacturers has not let up: “Airline industry continues to be under great pressure,” they said. Where Will Manufacturing Get Highly Skilled Workers for the Digital Revolution? There are articles every day in the trade magazines describing the new digital programs that will revolutionize manufacturing. They are all about bringing digital technology to the shop floor to increase productivity. According to the experts, everybody should be on the Industry 4.0 bandwagon today, or they will be left in the dust. The articles also say that adopting these advanced technologies will require high-skilled workers who can use the new technologies in their work on the shop floor. But in the rush to adopt the new digital technologies, nobody seems to want to address the big question— where will these highly skilled workers come from and where are the advanced training programs that will teach them the new skills during a skills gap? I began following the skills gap (303) 466-3777 in 1990 when I read the report foothillsmachinery.com America’s Choice: High Skills or Low Wages? make the big investment needed in apprentice training that would produce the high skilled workers they need. A 2018 a study by Deloitte and the Manufacturing Institute showed that “as recently as August 2018, there were 508,000 open jobs in U.S. manufacturing” and this crisis is projected to reach 2.4 million unfilled jobs by 2028. The 2018 study is the sixth survey in the last 30 years that has carefully documented the manufacturing job shortages and the inability of America’s flagship corporations to invest in the kinds of advanced training that would solve the problem. Instead, they opted for the short-term solutions of relying on immigration, outsourcing and automation, but not in advanced training. A study called the Transformation of Manufacturing by the National Bureau of Economic Research in March 2018 shows that manufacturing has lost 7.5 million jobs since 1980. Two million manufacturing jobs were lost between 1980 and 2000.Five million manufacturing jobs were lost between 2000 and 2019. The study cites the primary problem as a skills mismatch where manufacturing has moved from low-skilled jobs to very high-skilled jobs and the training to support the new jobs simply didn’t happen. A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

14 • Sept / Oct 2020

Despite all of the studies, manufacturing simply didn’t react from 1990 to 2018 with training for the skills needed, and are now faced with the 4th Industrial Revolution and need workers who understand robots, automation, artificial intelligence, machine learning, the Internet of Things, and a host of other new digital technologies. The 2018 skills gap report defines five skills that are needed—digital skills, technology and computer skills, programming for robots and automation, working with tools and techniques, and critical thinking—but it doesn’t say how workers will get these skills. American manufacturing is faced with two different problems. The first is attracting new people into the industry, and the second is investing in training programs to give them the needed skills. Attracting People into the Industry The Manufacturing Institute surveyed its members and found that the three top reasons for our current skill shortage are: 1. The negative perception by the public of the manufacturing industry (45%) 2. The retirement of baby boomers (36%) 3. New skills needed in the high skilled jobs (36%) The negative perception is driven by two factors—outsourcing of jobs and automation. It will be difficult to do anything about the perception problem because America’s flagship corporations continue to outsource jobs and close U.S. plants. They also are committed to automation to eliminate labor, which many people view as an effort to eliminate white and blue-collar jobs. So, job security is a big issue, and all of the Manufacturing Day events and high school visits won’t change people’s perceptions unless the companies can

do something about job security The problem of the retirement of baby boomers has been known for many years. In the next 10 years, 2.6 million baby boomers are expected to retire from their manufacturing jobs. Since the coming retirements were ignored, there’s little that manufacturers can do now to stop these retirements, except train new workers.

Investment in Training Employers have also tried signing bonuses to attract skilled people, but they don’t seem to acknowledge the fact that there are few skilled people to hire. They are going to have to accept the fact that they must create this new skilled work force, and the only viable alternative is to focus on investing in advanced training needed for these highly skilled jobs. But this would require a massive investment in advanced training, and many companies think it should be a public/private investment where the government contributes a lot of the money. The 2018 skills gap report said that apprentice training “has shown to be a promising pathway for many skilled jobs” and “the government and manufacturers together can fund the education and apprenticeship programs to develop a job-ready stream of qualified workers.” This is important because it is the first time that a survey on the skills gap identified the type of training that is needed, which is training that takes thousands of hours, not hundreds of hours. In the last 40 years, most of the manual and repetitive jobs have been replaced by automation; i.e. robots, cobots, palletizer’s, artificial intelligence and a wide variety of packaging machines. The simple jobs requiring little education and training are pretty much a thing of the past. What is needed today in manufacturing are highly skilled workers like machinists, fabricators, and maintenance people who can troubleshoot repair, and maintain all of this automated equipment. To train these kinds of highly skilled workers isn’t going to happen with a couple of months of on-the-job training or a few classes at the community college. What is needed are apprenticeship programs like the journeyman machinist programs, which take approximately 2 to 4 years to complete. The Bureau of Labor Statistics is the federal agency that keeps track of registered apprentices. Overall, the registered apprentice program has grown from 420,000 registered apprentices in 2009 to 633,000 active and new apprentices in 2019. However, most of the apprentices are in construction, public administration, transportation and warehousing—not in manufacturing. The data from the U.S. Department of Labor–Office of Apprenticeships shows that in 2009, there were 18,889 registered (active) apprentices in manufacturing—and as of fiscal year 2019, there were 17,334 active apprentices. In December 2019 there were 12.8 million people working in manufacturing, so 17,334 apprentices are about 1% of all manufacturing employees. What this tells me is that American manufacturing corporations do not want to invest in long-term advance training like apprentice training.

We have been talking about the skills gap and apprentice training for 30 years with very little progress. A White House fact sheet in 2015 said, “If the U.S. had as many apprentices per capita as Germany, we would have 7 million apprentices”. Since manufacturing has made very little headway in apprentice training for machinists, fabricators, maintenance people, mechatronics and other journeyman level jobs, I asked myself, just how will all of these workers also be trained in advanced digital technologies? So, I repeat, with the new stampede to use digital solutions, where will the people who can operate, troubleshoot, repair and maintain these digital systems come from? It appears that we have the proverbial cart before the horse again. Michael Collins is the author of Saving American Manufacturing and can be reached at mpcmgt.com. Take, for example, where people choose to live. In a study released on Sept. 3 .Tech Domains, talked to U.S-based technology workers in August and found that COVID-19 is placing pressures on tech talent to move to more affordable areas. The study found that 81% of tech workers living within 30 miles of the country’s biggest tech hubs, including the Bay Area, Seattle, New York City, Boston,Washington, D.C., Austin are considering or have already made plans to move to a more affordable city. While the entire technology workforce is affected, millennial tech workers have taken a more significant blow than other generations. They are significantly more likely than older tech workers to say that they have considered moving to a more affordable area. Additionally, an overwhelming 84% of millennial tech workers with a full-time job say that they are more likely to consider taking on freelance work since A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Marketing During a Pandemic: Are You Up to the Challenge? Even before the impact of the coronavirus hit, the manufacturing sector was bracing for a challenge. A survey by the National Association of Manufacturers conducted in early March found that 78.3% of member companies anticipated a financial hit to their businesses. Over half also cited likely changes in operations, and 35.5% expected supply chain disruptions. Six months later, the industry has adapted. Many supply chain disruptions have eased; elsewhere, companies have identified alternative vendors. Rigid health and safety protocols have been put in place to keep workers safe. And companies that could do so retooled production to produce critical supplies from commercial bleach to

Now is the time to ensure that you’re giving prospects a steady stream of thought leadership articles, blog posts, and data-driven information they can use to vet your company’s smarts and the value of doing business with you. As you plot your content strategy, don’t forget that different people consume information in multiple ways and across different channels. So maybe this is the time to incorporate a podcast series into your marketing mix or to add more visual content—from socially distanced photos from the factory floor to people’s pets as they work from home. Invest in virtual events. With most trade shows cancelled into the foreseeable future, virtual events offer a fresh way to get your team in front of prospects. Identify opportunities to speak at virtual conferences or create your own conference or webinar. For example, can you bring together industry leaders for an online conversation about pandemic lessons learned? Can you turn your latest trends research into a webinar for prospective buyers? Take advantage of the intimacy of the small screen to talk to your key audiences. Review your current marketing plan and concentrate on the areas that will deliver the highest return. Once you have identified the key activities, do them consistently. Measure your results and keep refining to improve. Service Robots Protect Medical Professionals While Providing Needed Care To COVID-19 patients Since the pandemic first shook the global stage there has been a lot of attention on the need to keep frontline workers out of harm’s way. For many, this meant taking efforts to flatten the curve through self quarantine. While these efforts played a meaningful and documentable role in flattening the curve, various pieces of technology took on significant roles as well. The Cheetah Mobile AI-enabled service robot is a prime example. They are so knowledgeable about the process, and our relationship with them made the experience very rewarding.” T-N Machining “One of our fears about certification was that we would bring in a consultant and they would tell us all the ways we needed to change the way we were doing business. That didn’t happen with BMSC – they helped us with documenting processes we were already doing, and in some cases, helped us to improve processes.” Valley Precision “The ISO experience was significantly easier than we expected, and we can say this is thanks to the help from BMSC.They effectively laid the groundwork that simplified the entire process.” Sun Grinding “I liken Bretta and Debbie’s team ability to ours – both women have unique strengths, and when Bretta and Debbie came to help us to achieve AS9100 certification, they were like a smooth running machine. They work seamlessly together. They are such a great fit and did an outstanding job at capturing the tone of our shop.” Peterson Machining “I was anxious about the investment required for certification and the level of work we would have to exert to achieve it. Bretta and Debbie continued to boost my confidence — not only are they so knowledgeable but they are also extremely supportive. They weren’t the least bit surprised that our Audit was so successful that we had ‘0’ findings. The processes we’ve further established with ISO 9001 and AS9100 have resulted in lower scrap rates.” Ayers Gear “We interviewed Bretta Kelly, owner of BMSC, for our AS9100 consultant. We didn’t interview other consultants because these same precision machine shops who said we’d need a consultant, also all recommended Bretta.” Cleveland Electric Labs Are you ready to implement a new ISO 9001:2015 or AS9100D / ISO 9001:2015 System or simplify your current Quality Management System? US Military Picks Two Colorado Space Companies To Develop New Communications Network The U.S. military’s Space Development Agency awarded two Denver-area aerospace companies $281.5 million to start developing a new kind of communications network in orbit that’s expected to eventually grow to hundreds of satellites. The awards were made public this week by the SDA, a procurement agency of the Department of Defense. The contracts call for Jefferson County-based Lockheed Martin Space and Denver-based York Space Systems to develop 20 satellites to test out the beginnings of what’s called a mesh network meant to improve communications from existing satellite systems upon which U.S. warfighters and their allies depend. The project is called the SDA’s Space Transport Layer Tranche 0 and is meant to be the start of large new space communications network. The satellites are supposed to be ready to launch in two years, by which time the SDA expects to be awarding work to build more satellites. Lockheed Martin Space, a division of Bethesda, Maryland-based Lockheed Martin Corp. won a contract worth $187.5 million, with it as the prime contractor and about 54% of the work expected to be done in Colorado.York Space Systems, a satellite-building startup, won a contract worth $94 million. “York is truly honored to have been se-

Its first satellite, for the U.S. Army, launched last year. The SDA’s communications network is meant to be an adaptable, secure network of many small satellites that can communicate among each other and with existing military satellite systems to quickly carry data to warfighters on the ground or in the air. Satellite systems traditionally communicated directly to ground stations, but weather, interference and latency can affect the smooth transmission of information. What the SDA seeks is to route crucial data quickly, sometimes relaying it to other satellites in orbit, to find the most efficient path to its destination. Such a mesh network would make military space communication faster and more resilient, said Eric Brown, director of mission strategy for Lockheed Martin Space’s military space business. That’s particularly important for U.S. soldiers, sailors and pilots as other nations push to develop more advanced weapons capabilities, including in orbit.

Lockheed Martin Space plans to use satellite bodies made by Tyvak, a small-satellite startup in which Lockheed has invested. Lockheed will integrate technologies into the satellites that are developed by Canada’s Telesat and other partner companies, Brown said. The SDA envisions its network as a sort of “internet of things” in space, he said. Brown likens it to smart appliances people have adopted in their homes, many of which can now communicate with each other and work in concert. “It stopped being individual smart devices and it started being a smart home, and I think that’s where we are in military space technology — on the cusp of true smart technologies,” he said. York Space Systems and Lockheed Martin Space are contracted separately and are not working together on the project. Part of the point is to enable different companies’ satellites to network seamlessly with each other, allowing the military to scale a larger network that isn’t tied to a single vendor, Brown said. As a result, the SDA is expected to bring in other contractors on future rounds of the network development. “Going from 10 satellites to 200 satellites is going to be a really big jump for any one company,” Brown said. 4 Considerations for Reshoring Supply Chains For the past 30 years, businesses have capitalized on the rise of globalization, and this is especially true for manufacturers. China has risen to dominate global trade since it was inducted into the World Trade Organization in 2001 thanks to low costs, a massive pool of qualified labor and unmatched production capacity. But, 2020 brought a major test for those global supply networks, and when something is tested, weaknesses are exposed. Businesses received a sudden wake-up call, realizing just how much they didn’t know about their offshore suppliers and manufacturers and this lack of visibility caused major problems. A survey by the Institute for Supply Management revealed that 97% of businesses experienced or will experience supply chain disruptions. However, in March, only 44% said they had a plan to overcome these disruptions. Suddenly, supply chain resilience became a popular topic and conversa24 Sept / Oct

Here’s what businesses need to consider when reshoring their supply chains: 1. It’s not an all-or-nothing proposition For U.S. businesses that have been operating abroad for decades, it may seem cumbersome and unrealistic to replace an entire network of suppliers, manufacturers and distributors with partners in North America. But, you don’t have to. You could start by just adding secondary suppliers in the U.S. or using a contract manufacturer in Mexico while keeping your established partners overseas. Additionally, there are alternative options that make supply chain relocation less daunting.

tions around businesses reshoring their supply chains began forming. Sourcing and manufacturing locally make businesses more flexible and responsive, which improves resilience when the unforeseen strikes. Many are exploring this option – 55% of supply chain leaders told Gartner they expect to have a highly resilient supply chain in 2-3 years, up from 21% that said they have such a supply chain today.Though finding partners outside of China is not the only path to better resilience, 33% said they have or will move sourcing and manufacturing activities outside of China in the Gartner survey.

2020

The first is delayed differentiation or postponement, a process where a business outsources certain component manufacturing and then handles subsequent processing steps internally. A warehouse in North America receives components in bulk and employees handle light assembly, packaging, labeling and shipping to the final destination. Postponement can decrease lead times and works well for direct-to-consumer brands, as it enables them to keep more of the right end product on hand to quickly fulfill customer orders. The second is a joint venture model where a business can partner with other businesses in the same vertical to stand up a factory or supply a specific material. This enables the business to split the cost of capital and labor and as such, is particularly appealing to more risk-averse or midsize businesses. Both of these options will help mitigate the impact of another major disruption without fully uprooting a long-standing network. 2. Greater flexibility and control When China became the global hub for manufacturing, the rationale for many businesses was they were sacrificing flexibility for significant cost savings. This compromise set businesses back this year as long lead times in China made last-minute production changes almost impossible. The closer the supply chain, the shorter the lead time, meaning you can better accommodate a surge or decrease in demand for certain products. The United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) also ensures local manufacturers and suppliers follow certain labor and environmental regulations, helping a business gain greater control

both over their production process and end product. In North America, there is far less likelihood of a partner using a cheaper fabric than ordered or outsourcing labor to a third party that doesn’t offer fair wages or decent working conditions.

CMM Revo Half Page Final.indd 1

In addition to the labor practices mandated by the USMCA, the agreement also regulates greenhouse gas emissions. People are becoming more aware of the environmental impacts of their consumerism, with 81% of global consumers saying it’s very or extremely important businesses try to improve the environment. Another 38% say they will pay more for goods that use sustainable materials, according to a Nielsen report. This passion is shared greatly by the largest generation of consumers – Millennials and Gen Z - although their older relatives are also paying more attention to this issue. Having suppliers or manufacturers in North America provides more clarity around the sustainability of your operations, therefore giving you more confidence in communicating about the environmental impacts to your customer. 3. Costs may be lower than you think Unsurprisingly, the number one reason China has dominated the global supply chain market is overall costs, and labor makes up a large piece of that. But, as the country became the world’s largest exporter, it lifted the entire economy, and wages increased. Now, the average hourly rate for a manufacturing employee in China is about $2 more than that of a worker in Mexico. Other capital costs in Mexico like real estate, land and machinery are also comparable to China. However, it’s worth noting that both Mexico and emerging manufacturing hubs like Vietnam do not offer the same production capacity as China. If a business is looking to move parts of its supply chain onshore, it still may be look-

ing to offset the cost of relocation. Automation bePMa 4/6/2020 can 2:04:17 driver of those savings as automated material handling can help businesses with labor-intensive processes such as sorting, packing and packaging. The equipment is expensive and finding labor that can maintain the heavy machinery can be challenging, but the investment is often worth it in the long run. Keep in mind that automation is a better option for organizations in the hard goods space that can use robots to assemble products versus apparel, which must be sewn by a human. 4. Reshoring makes more sense for certain industries Before deciding to reshore your supply chain, it’s important to consider your industry. As noted earlier, the production capacity of China is unrivaled with exports totaling $2.5 trillion in 2019, far more than the United States’ $1.65 trillion, according to Statista. Finding qualified labor in China, no matter what industry you’re in, is hardly an issue. Some other countries may not be able to support the needs of large businesses, especially in industries that went entirely offshore in the last few decades. There are other sectors that rely on components produced exclusively offshore – for example, a large electronics manufacturer that needs chips, processors and displays – making it nearly impossible to have a fully Continued Next Page A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

learning strategies to close the skills gap.

However, organizations that make essential or highly-regulated products such as pharmaceuticals, medical devices and construction materials have a stronger case for a local or even U.S.-based supply chain because greater control over the end product is critical. These types of businesses are also more likely to earn government subsidies to help with the higher costs of a predominately U.S.-based supply chain.

The pandemic has created a “new normal.” Failure to address the underlying problems in manufacturing will leave us susceptible to future disruptions and economic uncertainty. AME’s “Manufacturing Marshall Plan” provides a solid start to prevent that. By: John Sprovieri

While a mass exodus of production from Asia by U.S. businesses is unlikely, the past six months have highlighted the limitations and risks of an entirely offshore supply chain. Many organizations should and will rethink their strategy and look to strengthen their supply chains to be better prepared for the next disruption. If your business is thinking about reshoring its supply chain, keeping these considerations in mind will help leaders figure out if it’s the best way for your business to improve supply chain resilience. By: Matt Wisner

AME Issues Plan to Increase US Manufacturing Jobs Since the end of the Great Recession, U.S. manufacturing jobs increased steadily, from 11.5 million in December 2009 to 12.9 million in November 2019. Then came the COVID-19 pandemic. In just five months, we lost nearly 1.4 million jobs. Fortunately, that trend began reversing in May, and the sector has recovered 623,000 jobs through July. Still, there’s a lot of work to do. Beyond the economic and job losses, the pandemic exposed our overreliance on imports of medical devices and pharmaceuticals. Clearly, we must think differently about how and where to make our products. To that end, the Association for Manufacturing Excellence (AME) has published a new report, “A Manufacturing Marshall Plan,” that maps out how manufacturers can prevent post-pandemic supply chain disruptions, boost productivity and reskill their workforces. The plan advocates for reshoring, near-shoring and what it calls “LeanShoring,” the idea that if manufacturers can reduce costs by just 10 percent through continuous improvement and waste elimination, then 40 percent of what is now offshored could be reshored profitably.

Manufacturing in U.S. Expands at Fastest Pace Since Late 2018 U.S. manufacturing expanded in August at the fastest pace since late 2018, powered by growth in new orders that are a bright spot in an otherwise struggling economy. A gauge of factory activity increased to 56 during the month from 54.2 in July, Institute for Supply Management data showed. Readings above 50 indicate expansion, and the figure surpassed nearly every estimate in a Bloomberg survey of economists and the median projection of 54.8. The purchasing managers group’s measure of orders, which jumped more than 6 points, reached the highest point since the start of 2004. The increase in bookings, along with declining inventories, should continue to underpin production. The ISM’s gauge of output improved to a more than two-year high, though factory employment remained weak. “The index was stronger than July but we’re still recovering from the historically low levels of the pandemic,” said Timothy Fiore, chairman of the ISM Business Survey Committee, said on a call with reporters. At the same time, Fiore said he expects the recent strength to continue in September, traditionally a good month for factories. Fifteen of the 18 manufacturing industries tracked by the ISM, the most since March 2019, reported growth in August, led by wood products, plastics and rubber, food and textiles. Comments From ISM Respondents • • •

“Business is very good. Production cannot keep up with demand.” – Chemical Products “Current sales to domestic markets are substantially stronger than forecasted.” – Fabricated Metals “Homebuilder business continues to be robust, with month-overmonth gains continuing since May.” – Wood Products “Capital equipment new orders have slowed again. Quoting is active. Many customers waiting for the fourth quarter to make any commitments.” – Machinery “We are seeing solid month-over-month order improvement in all manufacturing sectors such as electrical, auto and industrial goods. Looking to add a few factory operators.” – Plastics

Establishing new domestic supply chains will require manufacturers to increase productivity, speed and quality. All of which can be helped through the digitalization of production. By pairing a connected environment of people, processes and services with the generation of actionable data, manufacturers can realize smart industries that foster innovation and collaboration.

Workers in these smart factories will require digital fluency, technological savvy and data analytics know-how—skills that previous generations did not require and that future generations often lack. Development of a skilled workforce must begin with increasing both the quantity and quality of recruits. Vocational education at the high school level must be revived. The report details how employers, community colleges and other organizations are advancing apprenticeships and work-based

The pickup in U.S. manufacturing output is slightly faster than Europe’s, according to separate data from IHS Markit. At the same time, an acceleration in new orders contrasts with a slight slowdown in that gauge for the euro area, highlighting uneven global growth.

The 2020 race for the White House and battle for U.S. Senate will reshape the manufacturing landscape for a generation. NTMA’s lobbyist in Washington, D.C., Omar S. Nashashibi, will discuss some of the issues most at stake during this campaign and will provide insight into the 2020 elections, race for the White house, battle for the Senate, and whether Speaker Pelosi will lead the U.S. House for another two years. Mr. Nashashibi will preview possible outcomes for trade, taxes, job training, and other issues important to members of the NTMA if either candidate wins the White House. This presentation will help your business to hear directly from a Washington insider, bypass the media spin, and learn how the government will continue to affect manufacturing in America.

NOVEMBER 12: ANNUAL MEETING/ROUNDTABLE DECEMBER 10: CHAPTER MEETING-Automation Panel

Please RSVP to Maddie Dahl, NUNTMA Chapter Executive, Email: NUNTMA.org/upcoming-events; Note: All Events Are Virtual high in August, continued to show factories are cutting staff. The ISM report doesn’t detail the actual levels of improvement in manufacturing since the survey of purchasing managers asks whether activity is increasing, decreasing or stagnant. So the figures are subject to big swings during turning points in the economy such as now. The ISM’s index of factory inventories fell to 44.4 in August, the lowest since January 2014, indicating stockpiles were declining at a faster pace. Customer inventories contracted at the quickest rate since June 2010, the report showed. “The recovery in production is badly lagging the stronger turnaround in spending, with the result that inventories are now looking very lean,” Andrew Hunter, senior U.S. economist at Capital Economics Ltd., said in a note. “That points to further gains in production in the months ahead.” The overall manufacturing gauge was also boosted by a slowdown in delivery times, which indicates supply bottlenecks. The ISM’s measure of export orders also rose to the highest level since the start of the year. Maxar Lands Satellite Work Worth Hundreds Of Millions Tied To 5G Spectrum Clearing TheWestminster-based aerospace company won a contract to build a fifth satellite for Intelsat, the final one the McLean,Virginia-based company is ordering to shift its video distribution over North America to new frequencies and clear spectrum for 5G wireless services. The companies announced the contract to build Intelsat’s Galaxy 37 satellite last month. Intelsat is also having Maxar build another geostationary communications satellite, making a total of six satellites ordered from Maxar, which the company says is work worth hundreds of millions of dollars. The companies have worked together for decades, dating back to Maxar’s predecessor company in satellite manufacturing, Space Systems Loral, which was acquired in 2012 by what’s now Maxar. “With a relationship dating back to the 1970s, Intelsat has procured 59 spacecraft from Maxar,” said Megan Fitzgerald, Maxar’s senior vice president of space programs delivery. “We’re delighted to add Galaxy 37 to the five other spacecraft we’re currently building for Intelsat.” Intelsat has commissioned new satellites to move its video distribution to new frequencies under a federal government program paying satellite companies to make way for wireless telecommunications companies to use specific parts of the spectrum band for 5G services. The spectrum clearing for 5G, overseen by the Federal Communication Commission, is injecting hundreds of millions of dollars into Colorado aerospace. A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Long Accredited To Nadcap For Plating.... And Now Announcing Nadcap Accreditation For Heat Treating

If your Copper, Copper alloys or Stainless Steel parts are very small, ultra precision and require Nadcap accredited plating, likely you consider Foresight Finishing to be an integral supplier to your business. The company, based in Tempe, Arizona for the past decade, specializes in plating connector contacts, RF components and loose piece contacts. Typical parts have tolerances as tight as +/- .0002. The finished parts pictured in the blue container to the right measure .1481” in length and .012” in diameter, and there are approximately 10,000 of these parts. Parts on the left are a result of Foresights pristine pre-clean and heat treat process. Casey Weizel, co-founder with his brother Joe, says, “Our customers all across the United States have been utilizing our Nadcap accredited plating processes, but major OEMs are now starting to flow down Nadcap heat treat in the electronics industry. For the past few years, we’ve had a number of customers request that we add heat-treating to our list of competencies. 2 years ago, we brought heat treat in-house, and we perfected the process for the ultra small precision parts that are the cornerstone of our business.” The contacts and connectors Foresight plates are typically used in the Aerospace and Defense industries. As such, just like plating for these industries requires Nadcap accreditation, they would also require Nadcap for heat-treating. Casey says, “We’ve been heat treating for the past couple of years, but only for customers who didn’t require Nadcap accreditation. That being said, it has always been part of our business plan to achieve Nadcap accreditation for heat treating.” He added, “Our customers regularly tell us that standard heat treat companies who heat treat larger parts are not set up to handle ultra precision small parts.” Casey and Joe enlisted the help of Rod Beverley to spearhead the company’s preparation for Nadcap accreditation for heat treat. Rod says, “6 months ago we began the difficult process of accreditation, and in June of this year, we were 34 28

successfully Nadcap accredited for heat treating.” Today, customers who machine very small parts that require both heat treat and plating, Nadcap accreditation, can simplify the number of companies in their supply chain and send their parts to Foresight Finishing. Casey says, “A major challenge that is witnessed across the electronics industry is plating coverage on the insides of small heat-treated beryllium copper parts. One can have the best plating chemistry in the world, but heat treat scale and parts not cleaned properly prior to heat treat is often a major contributor to this issue.” He adds, “Foresight Finishing has in process inspection that validates the cleaning of heat-treated components so we don’t go to plating with contaminated ID’s. However, this does not correct the problem — it only identifies it, until now. The combination of Foresight’s small parts plating line, pre-clean process and vacuum furnace provides our platers with a bright, pristine, oxide free surface that eliminates harsh cleaning cycles that can undersize and etch parts. Foresight’s heat-treating process creates a surface that accepts the plating deposit willingly instead of hampering it.” Joe says, “Before we opened our plating business in Arizona, both Casey and I had worked for many years plating in Minnesota, where we grew up.We learned much about the process, and we also knew that one of the key differentiators we could offer our customers over other platers was state of the art technology and processes. Foresight Finishing’s plating processes and equipment are best in class. The prep processing we’ve instituted prior to plating significantly reduces our turn around times. When we made the decision to add heat-treating to our business, we applied these same principles. Our built in cleaning processes help to ensure that the parts that we heat treat

are free of debris and oils. When we heat treat and plate a part, our prep and clean process can take 30 minutes. In comparison, if we plate a part that hasn’t been properly cleaned by an outside heat treater, the cleaning process can take hours or even days de-scaling the parts.”

Vacuum heat-treating creates an oxygenfree environment so your metals receive all the benefits of heat treatment, without any of the downsides of oxygen contamination. Parts come out clean,

Joe says, “We did research prior to investing in our heat treat oven. We wanted to ensure our oven would be the best fit for the type of parts we plate. In our analysis, we determined that we would purchase a vacuum heat treating oven, as we learned it could reduce cleaning cycle times by as much as 70%.” Rod says, “We offer some of the most competitive heat treat prices and turnaround available in the market. Our heat treat and hardness testing lot charges are $275 for heat treat and $100 for hardness testing. In the market, our customers have told us that they paid $350 for heat treat and $150 for hardness testing.” He added, “We also hear from our customers that 2-3 weeks turnaround for their parts to be heat treated is the norm. We are running 24x7, and with the best equipment, so we are able to offer 3-5 day turnaround for heat treating and plating.” Casey says, “Within our Quality Metrics, we are achieving 98.9% on-time delivery and 99.6% quality.” He adds, “When our customers bring us their parts for heat treat and plating, they will see many advantages over using two different suppliers, one for heat treat and one for plating. We can provide reduced variability in the process, we can control cleanliness throughout both processes, and we can reduce their turnaround times. When you add this to extremely competitive pricing, I think we’ve got an outstanding solution for customers new and old.” Prior to starting the Heat Treat division in their company, Joe and Casey solicited colleagues for recommendations on a hire. Casey says, “Mary Treiny came highly recommended, and we brought her on-board to get the heat treat division up and running.” He added, “Mary has done an outstanding job, and we are proud to say that through her efforts, we have the best heat treat facility for ultra precision parts around.” Rod adds,” When you add an oven to Nadcap accreditation, it doubles or even triples the accreditation process, it is just that difficult. I think our successful accreditation to Nadcap for heat treat is a testament to both Mary and the company owners’ drive for continuous improvement. I know our customers value what we have put in place to make their jobs just a little more simplified.” If Foresight Finishing isn’t one of your suppliers, and you have plating and heat-treating requirement, visiting their new facility, purchased 3 years ago, should be a must. I am confident you will not see a special processing facility, with plating and heat-treating, that is as immaculate as you will encounter in this 14,000 sq. ft. state of the art business.

BYU Students Make Glasses To Help Autistic Kids’ Eye Contact Heidi Kershaw was sitting in on a therapy session with her 7-year-old son, who has autism, when she noticed he kept getting distracted from the therapy exercises. His eyes were glued to the corner of the room, where Mickey Mouse was on the TV.

If only there were an image of Mickey Mouse on her face, the mom told the therapist, she would finally be able to establish eye contact with her son. Kershaw, who is the senior vice president of operations at the Entertainment Industry Foundation in Los Angeles, kept the thought with her and came up with an idea: a pair of glasses that stream digital content on the lenses, allowing parents or therapists to keep eye contact with nonverbal children with autism. After getting turned down by engineering firms who told her the glasses would cost about $1 million to design and develop, Kershaw pitched the idea to the BrighamYoung University Engineering Capstone program, in which senior students undergo a two-semester project related to mechanical, manufacturing, electric or computer engineering. A team of six students - three mechanical engineers and three electrical engineers - took on the project and developed two prototypes of glasses. The glasses design chosen by Kershaw, who sponsored the project, consists of two LCD screens, two sheets of teleprompter glass and a speaker, according to a press release. The glasses, which bear a resemblance to virtual reality headsets, are connected to a control box that allows the user to control the opacity. The lower the opacity, the more clearly the user’s eyes are visible to the child. By Connor Richards

Skyworks Global Announces Collaboration with Airo1 to Manufacture Gyroplane Skyworks Global Inc. (“Skyworks”) and Airo1 LLC (“Airo1”) are announcing an agreement for Airo1 to produce SparrowHawk III kits for American Autogyro Inc., a subsidiary of Skyworks. This agreement will restart SparrowHawk production in response to demand for the aircraft from both domestic and international customers. In order to celebrate the start of the agreement, Skyworks will offer a discounted price to the first 10 customers. The normal price is $69,500 and the first ten customers will receive a price of $59,900. Interested customers can contact Skyworks at: info@skyworks-global.com. The home-build kit provides everything needed to fly except fuel (and the pilot!). Airo1 will offer commercial assistance for building the kits. Airo1 will also provide after-market support and replacement parts for the aircraft. Prior to the introduction of the original SparrowHawk Gyroplane, the homebuilt gyroplane kit industry had a poor reputation due to accidents. The majority of these could be attributed to flawed designs that misplaced thrust vectors. The SparrowHawk corrected this issue by introducing the innovative “center-line-thrust” placement of the propeller and appropriately aligning the rotor thrust vector. Over the next several years, other gyroplane manufacturers adopted centerline thrust (others left the market) and the accident rate declined. As a result, the gyroplane market has experienced significant growth and renewed interest. American Autogyro is building out a distribution network, recently announcing the introduction of distributors in countries such as Brazil and Australia. A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

The $51.2 million project is meant to integrate tracking and command systems for two Spacebased Infrared System satellites known as SBIRS GEO 5 and GEO 6 — being built by Lockheed Martin Space to launch in 2021 and 2022 — and to serve as command-and-control software for three Next-Generation Overhead Persistent Infrared (OPIR) satellites. The military selected Lockheed Martin Space two years ago to lead development of the Next-Gen OPIR satellites, with their launch planned for 2025. “We understand the OPIR mission end-to-end because we developed, launched, and sustain it, both in space and on the ground,” said Maria Demaree, vice president and general manager of Lockheed Martin Space Mission Solutions, in a statement. “We also understand that our nation’s adversaries would also seek to defeat our defensive systems and are committed to developing advanced technology that always keeps us ahead of the threat.” Its headquarters campus southwest of Denver and offices in Sunnyvale, California, are where it develops global positioning, missile detection and other satellite technologies for the military as well as civilian space vehicles for NASA and commercial satellites. The U.S. military’s missile-launch detection satellite fleet is managed from Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora. Separately, the U.S. Army Geospatial Center this week selected Maxar Technologies Inc. Maxar said. The Army wants the terminals able to be set up by two people in an hour or less and then help “analyze and disseminate data from commercial Earth observation satellites” and help troops on the ground during military, humanitarian and disaster-relief missions. The terminals will make use of data and images collected by Maxar’s high-resolution WorldView earth-imaging satellite constellation and are designed to be able to add other commercial optical and synthetic-aperture radar information sources. “The RGT is revolutionizing the way users in remote sites obtain the critical Earth Intelligence their missions demand – when and where they need it most,” said Tony Frazier, Maxar’s executive vice president of global field operations. The remote ground terminals are meant to also integrate with a modular field intelligence ground station system being developed by the Army, known as the Tactical Intelligence Targeting Access Node, or TITAN, the company said.
