2017 Has Been An Eventful Year For The Fahey Machinery Company Family.
founded. I believe we have. On a positive note, since the aforementioned tragic loss, we have actually grown in leaps in bounds.While reflecting and examining our current business practices it was apparent change was required and this change has manifested in several ways. We hired a seasoned Operations Manager whom is providing structure and support ensuring past mistakes or poor practices are not repeated while defining roles, processes and empowering our entire team. We have also expanded our sales team with the addition of a new salesperson for our Northeastern territory. He is off to a great start and doing an excellent job helping customers in that region.We have added a new position titled Machine Sales Coordinator, whose primary role is to manage each order as submitted through purchase, delivery, and installation. A secondary role of this position is marketing. This additional focus ensures our company, new products and solutions are readily available to both existing and potential customers.
The expansion continues in our service department. We now have three Machine Service Technicians, each bringing different experiences and talent to our service team. Customer support and service is a foundational precept of Fahey Machinery Company. Our service team benefits from continuing education be it classroom, seminars or other venues often provided by the manufacturers we represent in order to support the products and technologies 8am To 5pm we offer . We continue to explore ways to expand this department over the coming year as our goal is to have a serviceman available the same or next day following the request. In closing I wish to thank all of our customers. It is because of you we have grown so much in the last years. Wilsonville Battery Maker Nabs $13M, Plans To Automate Facility By Pete Danko – Staff Reporter, Portland Business Journal ESS Inc. says it will use a just-closed $13 million Series B financing round to boost production capacity at its plant in Wilsonville, where the company makes an unconventional battery that can provide long-duration energy storage. Lithium-ion batteries are the flavor of the day in energy storage, leaving alternative technologies fighting to pry their way into the burgeoning market. But ESS CEO Craig Evans said the fresh investment demonstrates growing confidence in flow batteries, the type made by ESS. “What we’ve needed to do with this technology is prove bankability,” Evans said Tuesday after the company announced the new funding round. ESS has been doing that, Evans said, with a growing roster of deployments, including at a UC San Diego microgrid, a wind farm in Texas and a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers microgrid in Missouri. Flow batteries use separate tanks of chemical solutions that are pumped into a chamber where they react through a membrane to produce electrical charge. ESS uses a non-toxic electrolyte made up of iron, salt and water instead of the commonly seen vanadium or zinc. The battery systems can be scaled to meet small or large needs by varying the size of the tanks, and can provide three to eight hours of power vs. around half that for lithium ion.

ESS packages its latest system in a 40-foot shipping container. Evans said ESS has deployed about 1 megawatt-hour of capacity — an amount of energy equal to about what a typical home uses in a month. The company expects to deliver about 2 megawatt-hours of additional product in the first half of next year. But this big financing round will allow it to invest in automation tools to ramp up capacity, Evans said — to 300 megawatt-hours by summer 2018 and eventually to 900 megawatt-hours, all at a 100,000-square-foot facility it recently moved into in Wilsonville. “I don’t think we’ll have that (capacity) needed in 2018,” Evans said. “But this funding allows us to get the line up, learn how to run the line and
be ready for demand in 2019 and 2020.” Energy storage can help integrate variable renewable energy sources, like solar and wind, which have been falling in cost. Evans see that feeding growth. ESS was founded in 2011 by Evans and CTO Julia Song, who had both been with ClearEdge Power, a now-defunct local fuel-cell maker. ESS landed a five-year, $2.8 million ARPA-E grant in 2012 that grew to $5 million, and picked up $3.2 million in a Series A funding round led by Pangaea Ventures. Pangea returned in the Series B round, joined by several new investors, led by BASF and including Cycle Capital Management, Presidio Partners Investment Management and InfraPartners Management. “If someone wants to work in renewable energy, we definitely have opportunities,” Human Resources Director Bettina Davis told the Business Journal. Davis said the Hillsboro solar manufacturer is aiming to hire 350 production workers, many at the entry level, in order to reach full capacity by July. That’s up from the 200 workers the company had talked about hiring by May just a few weeks ago.

Solarworld Americas Inc., Looking To Bounce Back From A Near-Death Experience This Summer, Is Ratcheting Up Its Hiring. By Pete Danko – Staff Reporter, Portland Business Journal
SolarWorld downsized from around 800 to 300 employees early this summer after its German parent SolarWorld AG fell into insolvency, and it warned the state that it could shutter the Hillsboro plant. The company has now embarked on a hiring spree and production ramp-up after winning a crucial first-round victory late last month in a high-profile trade case that could give it new protections against cheap foreign competition. A final decision in the case will come from President Donald Trump in January. In an interview last week, SolarWorld CEO Juergen Stein listed capital and hiring as main constraints to ramping up.
“Many, many people are coming back,” Stein said, “but it takes some time to get the people onboard again. And the newer ones, we have to train.” Davis said the rehiring rate is running at about 15 percent, which she characterized as high. Many of the open positions require no specific solar or manufacturing experience, she said. The company declined to reveal salaries, but said it had raised pay to lure workers in “a very competitive market that’s nearly at full employment.” When fully staffed, the company will be at “600plus” employees, Davis said, down from the its previous full-capacity level of around 800 and reflecting trimmed overhead.

Specht Development’s Vista Logistics Park, shown here in an earlier construction photo, is one of the new developments in the larger Gresham Vista Business Park. The Port of Portland will decide on Wednesday whether or not to sell 7.6 acres in a nearby lot to Element SixTechnologies, which wants to build a new manufacturing facility on the site. Almost 8 acres of vacant industrial property in Gresham could soon be home to an advanced manufacturing company that makes synthetic diamonds used in the industrial world. The Port of Portland will consider selling 7.64 acres in the Gresham Vista Business Park to Element SixTechnologies Corp., a subsidiary of the United Kingdom’s Element Six Holdings Ltd. The company would pay roughly $2.3 million for the property. Element Six has proposed building a new manufacturing facility on the property to produce synthetic diamonds. According to information on the plan from the port, the facility would initially employ 60 people.The company would also work with the nearby Mt. Hood Community College to develop training and apprenticeship programs. The city of Gresham would also have to approve a zoning change for the plan to proceed.The city will consider that change, from corridor mixeduse to general industrial, in January. Element Six’s synthetic diamonds are used in a range of applications, including as tweeters in high-end audio speakers, synthetic diamond sensors in radiation therapy, synthetic diamond cutters for oil and gas drilling and in semiconductors. A $37 billion order from China Aviation Suppliers Holding Company for 300 airplanes during a ceremony in Beijing; A $15 billion deal with Emirates, one of the world’s largest airlines, for 40 787-10 Dreamliners; A $7.4 billion contract with CDB Aviation for 42 737 MAX 8s, 10 737 MAX 10s and eight 787-9 Dreamliners; A $2.2 billion deal with ALAFCO Aviation Lease and Finance Company for 20 additional 737 MAX 8s; and A $1.9 billion order from Azerbaijan Airlines for five more 787-8 Dreamliners and a commitment to purchase two large freighters. All these deals come on the heels of a $14 billion deal with Singapore Airlines. Boeing has seen particular success with its 737 MAX, which is the fastestselling airplane in Boeing history, having surpassed 4,000 total orders from 92 customers. “With flydubai’s proven business model and ambitious growth plans, we look forward to hundreds of flydubai 737 MAXs connecting Dubai with the rest of the world,” Kevin McAllister, Boeing Commercial Airplanes president and CEO, said of the flydubai deal. These transactions will have a positive impact on Ohio. The Buckeye State is the No. 1 supplier to Boeing, which spends $10.5 billion with 392 suppliers in the state, including many in the Dayton region, and supports some 34,000 jobs in Ohio through its spending with suppliers. In addition to GE Aviation, other large suppliers to Boeing in the region include UTC Aerospace Landing Systems in Troy, which has 700 employees; Projects Unlimited Inc., which has about 165 workers; Centerville-based SelectTech Services, which provides support in structural engineering; Troy-based Dare Electronics, which supplies devices that monitor voltage or perform sensing or control functions; as well as Honeywell Aerospace in Urbana that provides lighting for jets.

General Motors Co. has bought Strobe Inc., a Pasadena, California-based company that makes laser-based imaging technology used in self-driving cars, for an undisclosed amount.
“To solve these problems we’ve acquired Strobe, a company that has quietly been building the leading next-generation LIDAR sensors,” Vogt wrote in a blog post. “Strobe’s new chip-scale LIDAR technology will significantly enhance the capabilities of our self-driving cars. But perhaps more importantly, by collapsing the entire sensor down to a single chip, we’ll reduce the cost of each LIDAR on our self-driving cars by 99 percent.”
GM, which recently announced plans to release a fleet of new electric vehicles by 2023, said the purchase will help GM speed up the development of autonomous vehicles and reduce sensor costs, reported Reuters. Strobe, which was founded three years ago, makes a sensor technology known as LIDAR, uses a laser light to measure the distance between objects. Kyle Vogt, chief executive of Cruise Automation, a unit of GM that is developing self-driving technology said the technology has been costly,

The companies didn’t disclose the financial terms of the GM-Strobe deal. Ford Motor Co. said late last month that it will develop self-driving vehicles for San Francisco-based Lyft Inc. in an alliance that will jointly design software for Ford’s cars to communicate directly with Lyft’s ridehailing app. The new partnership is another example of a large automaker teaming up with a smaller, tech-based company to advance in the race to bring fully autonomous vehicles to market. Intel To Explore In-Car Entertainment With Warner Bros. Partnership At the Los Angeles Auto Show recently, Intel Corp. Why manufacturing jobs are coming back to the U.S. — even as companies buy more robots So with robot sales on the rise, why aren’t U.S. manufacturing jobs plummeting? The answer, for now, may be that robots are actually helping bring more jobs back from overseas than they’re eliminating. Take the Carrier manufacturing plantTrump claimed he helped convince to stay in the U.S. last year. That decision was driven in part by the company’s decision to save on labor by automating the plant. Adidas, as another example, says it’s opening a new factory in Georgia that will be highly roboticized, with only about 160 human workers. So while those jobs are staying in the U.S., the plants aren’t employing nearly as many human workers as they would have in the past. “If you had an assembly plant that was making 500 cars a day and you shut it down 20 years ago and you offshored the production, and you move the plant here again, now you’re going to be making the same number of cars with maybe half as many people,” Moser says. 1. Automotive and Electronics Industry Growth The two industries that have relocated the most jobs back to the US are the automotive and electronicsindustries. This is partially because the size of these products makes it more difficult and expensive to transport them.
Groups such as the United AutoWorkers have had some influence in bringing jobs www.chemtool.com back to the US, but auto companies have also exceeded their promises to the organization and started producing advanced technologies, such as lithium-ion batteries, in the US. In some cases, unions have even considered allowing lower wages for US workers to make onshore production more cost-effective compared to outsourcing. If car part manufacturers reduce their U.S. wages by 40 to 50 percent, bringing operations back to America would make economic sense once shipping costs are factored in. After the reductions, the wages for US workers would still be higher than for those in Mexico. Advanced technologies are the most likely to be reshored, because they’re the most difficult to produce and often require highly skilled workers to make them. In the US, these workers are often easier to find, and companies can watch manufacturing processes more closely. 2. Increased Labor Cost One of the most common reasons for moving manufacturing jobs overseas is the cheap production and labor costs available there. Wages in other countries, however, have been rising, making outsourcing less lucrative. Wages in China, for example, more than doubled between 2005 and 2016, making production in China more expensive than in other middle-income countries and closer to the cost of production in high-income countries like the United States. Around the world, wages adjusted for inflation are predicted to increase by 2.3 percent.Asia is expected to see the biggest increases, withVietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, India, and China all near the top of the list.Vietnam is projected to have the highest real wage growth in 2017, at 7.2 percent.
North America, meanwhile, is expected to have smaller increases in salary. In the U.S., the number is just 1.9 percent. This means the gap between wages in Asia and the United States is closing. When taking into account other cost factors, the cost of having plants in the US versus other parts of the world becomes closer to equal. Automation — though it has a reputation for destroying jobs — has made labor costs cheaper in the US, encouraging more companies to bring production back to American soil.

3. Logistical Challenges Logistical issues are another factor making America more desirable for manufacturing companies. Moving production overseas can complicate the supply chain, and shipping products and materials from overseas to the US can get expensive. Moving operations offshore requires new facilities to be built and parts to be shipped to the new location, which necessitates significant fuel and transportation costs.The finished products then need to be shipped back to US markets, tacking on additional shipping costs. The Warner Bros. collaboration is a non-exclusive partnership and Intel is looking to partner with other media and streaming companies down the road, Weast said. The chipmaker is also interesting in the potential for enabling gaming experiences — a sector that rival Nvidia Corp. has largely dominated. “We view in-car entertainment as being non-passive but interactive, which lends itself very well to gaming applications,” Weast said. While it’s too early to say that any company has an advantage, Abuelsamid believes that he can see more car companies and suppliers teaming with media and streaming companies in coming months. “Nvidia also sells a lot of chips into the server and data center market and are also looking how to leverage data to make money in this business,” he said. manufacturing output has fallen, versus a third (32%) who say it has risen. Older people generally are more likely than younger people to believe manufacturing output has fallen. More than half (56%) of 50- to 64-yearolds, and nearly half (49%) of people 65 and older, say that’s the case, compared with 39% of 18- to 29-year-olds. Income also appears to be a factor: 42% of people earning $100,000 or more a year say manufacturing output has increased, the highest level of any income bracket, while 55% of those earning between $30,000 and $49,999 a year say output has declined. Most Americans Unaware That U.s. Manufacturing Output Has Grown By Drew Desilver Manufacturing jobs in the United States have declined considerably over the past several decades, even as manufacturing output – the value of goods and products manufactured in the U.S. – has grown strongly. But while most Americans are aware of the decline in employment, relatively few know about the increase in output, according to a new Pew Research Center survey. Four of every five Americans (81%) know that the total number of manufacturing jobs in the U.S. has decreased over the past three decades, according to the survey of 4,135 adults from Pew Research Center’s nationally representative American Trends Panel. But just 35% know that the nation’s manufacturing output has risen over the same time span, versus 47% who say output has decreased and 17% who say it’s stayed about the same. Only 26% of those surveyed got both questions right. College graduates are more likely to know that U.S. manufacturing output has increased than are people with less than a bachelor’s degree. Still, college graduates are about as likely to say output has increased rather than decreased (43% versus 39%), with the rest saying it’s stayed about the same. Manufacturing jobs peaked in 1979 at 19.4 million, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and by 1987 had fallen to 17.6 million.What had been a slow decline in employment accelerated after the turn of the century, and especially during the Great Recession. Manufacturing payrolls bottomed out at fewer than 11.5 million in early 2010, and even though more than
900,000 manufacturing jobs have been added since, overall employment in manufacturing is still at its lowest level since before the U.S. entered World War II. As a share of the overall workforce, manufacturing has been dropping steadily ever since the Korean War ended, as other sectors of the U.S. economy have expanded much faster. From nearly a third (32.1%) of the country’s total employment in 1953, manufacturing has fallen to 8.5% today. But that doesn’t mean Americans don’t make things anymore. Last year, U.S. manufacturers made about $5.4 trillion worth of goods and products (in constant 2009 dollars), according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis. The biggest categories were food, beverages and tobacco products ($817 billion), chemical products ($752 billion) and motor vehicles and parts ($670 billion). After adjusting for inflation, manufacturing output in the first quarter of this year was more than 80% above its level 30 years ago, according to BLS data. But while U.S. manufacturing output has increased in absolute terms, it still represents a smaller share of the economy than it used to: Manufacturing accounted for about 23% of gross output in 1997 (the first year for which such data are available) but just 18.5% last year. Output gains have varied widely among different manufacturing sectors. For example, according to a separate set of industrial production indices maintained by the Federal Reserve Board, computer and electronics production has soared more than 2,600% since 1987, interrupted only briefly by the Great Recession. Production of motor vehicles and parts fell steeply during the recession, but recovered strongly and is now 124% above its 1987 level. The apparel and leather goods sector, by contrast, has been on a long downhill slide: Its production index fell 85% between 1987 and the first half of this year. And while textile production fell sharply (about 52%) in the first decade of the century, it’s held mainly steady since then. It’s important to note, however, that nearly all of the growth in manufacturing output over the past three decades occurred before the

Great Recession, which had a devastating impact on U.S. manufacturing. After peaking in the first quarter of 2008, the BLS’ index of real (that is, inflation-adjusted) manufacturing output plunged 24% over the next year and a half, and only topped its pre-recession peak earlier this year. More with less The simultaneous increase in manufacturing output and decline in manufacturing jobs over the long term shows that American manufacturers have become far more productive than they were three decades ago – that is, they can produce more goods, or higher-value goods, with less labor. The BLS’ index of labor productivity for manufacturing is two and a half times higher than it was at the beginning of 1987. This reflects several factors, among them businesses investing more in machinery and replacing old machines with more advanced ones; workers becoming more skilled and educated; and firms streamlining and improving their industrial processes. Economists track productivity growth closely. As Christine Lagarde, managing director of the International Monetary Fund, commented earlier this year, “it is the most important source of higher income and rising living standards over the long term. General Manager Dave Baxter said the company is seeing pressure to raise wages for workers with technology skills—but it is having difficulty passing along cost increases to clients, especially because its services are sold as a costsaving technology. It is hard at this point to pinpoint how much of the apparent economic uptrend can be attributed to policies coming out of Washington and how much is due to other factors. The Trump administration points to its efforts to cut taxes and pare back business regulation. But other factors—such as long-delayed economic recoveries in Japan and Europe—are also likely independently at play. Some executives say tax cuts will help if they happen. Laurel Highland Total Communications, a cable and phone company that operates in rural areas of Pennsylvania, has kept its staff lean in recent years in response to a lackluster economy in the region and burdensome regulations,said Chief Executive Jim Kail. The company is now looking to add a few workers to its 65-person staff. “If the corporate rates go down, that frees up a lot of cash. We’d be
looking to hire and make investment in equipment,” Chief Executive Jim Kail said. Megan Greene, economist at Manulife Asset Management, doubts the tax plan will boost economic growth in the longer run. Business investment incentives, she notes, phase out after five years. “It could be a short-term sugar hit that will stoke the stock market, but not set us up for sustainable growth moving forward,” she said. Machinsts Inc. Goes Into Overtime For Alaska Project By Ian Dunn When Louis D r e y f u s Tr a v O c e a n needed some exper tise to outfit their barge for the harsh conditions of northern Alaska, they knew A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

where to turn, Machinists Inc. TravOcean was planning to lay 16 km of fiber optic network, the first part of their network around Alaska, the Quintillion Subsea Network. “We had been approached in April by representatives of TravOcean, checking out our capabilities.They dropped off some drawings and said they needed equipment made up for the barge, starting in May,” said Jeff Tomson of Machinists Inc. TravOcean was looking for a lot of brackets, bladder system, cable coil retention and several mounting blocks for the deck of the barge. Tomson said they put together a price associated with that. TravOcean representatives came back on May saying they needed it right away, by the end of the month. Machinists Inc. took on the challenge. “We put a team of 8-10 people on it, knocked out all of the components. In the meantime, they approached us with the opportunity to install all the components when it is on the barge,” Tomson said. “We delivered the components at the end of May and started installing them at the beginning of June. We were done with the instillation by the middle of June.” Meeting the tight timeline was a great example of the flexibility offered at Machinists. They were able to put a team together and support that team. “We’re very responsive in our fabrication department and are able to take on quick jobs on a regular basis. This one was very unique in its requirements, but the requirements fit well within our capabilities,” Tomson said. “We worked overtime and weekends to support the delivery.” TravOcean took the barge in the summer of 2017 to the north slope of Alaska for the fiber optic instillation.
When they came back, Machinists Inc. was commissioned to take everything off the barge. The barge had to be brought back to its original condition. The work was done close to Machinists Inc. facility on the Duwamish River at Sea Tac Marine. Machinists Inc. has done a lot of marine applications, but not the full rigging of barge systems. The rigging of the barge system was unique and new for Machinists, Tomson said. The biggest challenge was simply the schedule.

“We had to coordinate with their team. We had to get the parts over there. We had to coordinate with SeaTac Marine for accessibility and power requirements on the project. We needed a lot of power to run the welders. There were many requirements around collaboration and coordination. The toughest was just to make sure everybody was on the same page,” Tomson said. As you might imagine, the conditions in Alaska are pretty extreme, so Machinists’ work had to withstand that environment. Tomson said they had to do a complete inspection of all the welds. MI used a mag-particle inspection to make sure there were no cracks or voids. Plus, they had to prove they met the welding standards that were set for them, the ABS standards. It’s nothing new for Machinists Inc.

“There are certainly other projects that met very similar criteria. We do a lot of work on the fishing fleet based out of Seattle. Most of the work is in shop, not on the boat. But every now and then, we do some boat instillation,” Tomson said. All the barge equipment had to be removed in five days, because “time is money.” The barge had to be stripped down to make it ready for another project.Tomson said they had to make sure all the different teams were not in each other’s way.
Machinist Inc. put together a plan that everyone followed so they could be as efficient as possible to get the work done on time. “It was challenging, but the challenges were accomplished on schedule. The boat had to leave by a certain date to start laying cable by a certain time. We really had to meet the schedule challenge of the customer, which was paramount. We were able to build up the team with short notice that was very responsive and successful,” Tomson said.

Concept Laser Lays The Foundation For Additive Manufacturing Of Tomorrow With today’s groundbreaking, GE (NYSE: GE) and Concept Laser lay the foundation for a new facility in Lichtenfels, Germany. In the future, the 3D Campus will unite research and development along with production, service, and logistics.The new offices should be ready for move-in early 2019, and around 40,000 square meters will provide room for about 500 employees. The future machine production capacity will be four times higher than today. This will make Concept Laser’s Lichtenfels facility a global GE center for the production of 3D metal printing machines. About 105 million euros will be invested into the location. The 3D Campus will accommodate the strong growth of Concept Laser in recent years and make room for further expansions. Additive manufacturing (also called 3D printing) involves taking digital designs from computer aided design (CAD) software, and building them on an additive machine, layer by layer from metal powder. Additive components are typically lighter, more durable and more efficient than traditional casting and forged parts because they can be made as one piece, requiring less welds, joints and assembly. Because additive parts are essentially “grown” from the ground up, they generate far less waste material. The General Electric–Safran joint venture already expects to deliver 1,900 engines this year, the bulk of which – some 1,400 engines – will be CFM56s, while production of Leap engines alone is currently scheduled to reach 2,100 in 2020. On the way there, CFM will make 1,200 Leaps in 2018 and 1,900 in 2019. It is likely these numbers may be updated to reflect the additional production targets.

CFM Adds 800 Extra Engines to Ramp-Up

The extra engine tally will largely be made up of more CFM56 engines in the first two years and additional Leaps in the later part of the decade. The change in numbers will come through a stretch-out of CFM56 engines for additional A320ceo and 737 Next Generation aircraft that are expected to be announced by Airbus and Boeing at this week’s Paris Air Show. The additional Leap engines are expected to be for supplemental orders of A320neos, C919s and additional MAXs, including the newly launched -10. “Airbus and Boeing asked us to add a collective 800 engines between now and 2020,” says GE Aviation president David Joyce. Despite the additional load on the already unprecedented production commitment, he adds, “We feel pretty good about the ramp-up. It’s not an extrapolation, it’s an interpolation. It is game on and we are ready.”
It is not clear how the additional engines will be reflected in the aircraft ramp-up plans already announced by Airbus and Boeing. Both manufacturers are expecting to increase monthly rates, with Airbus targeting 60 A320s per month by 2019 and Boeing 57 by around the same time. The additional orders are expected to revealed at the show this week and will contribute to GE’s growing backlog of US$158 billion – some US$149 billion of which is for commercial engines. For Paris, “we are eyeballing US$15 billion in new business,” says Joyce. “So what’s not to like in this business environment?” he adds.

Prime Turbines Named Authorized Repair And Overhaul Center For Ge M601 And H Series Engines Dallas-based Prime Turbines LLC, a subsidiary of VSE Aviation, Inc., has advanced its partnership with GE Aviation from a Designated Repair Center (DRC) to an Authorized Repair and Overhaul Center (AROC) for GE M601 and H Series turboprop engines. Under the new designation, Prime Turbines now has the authority to accept and overhaul all GE M601 and H Series engines. Prime Turbines is the first AROC outside of Prague, Czech Republic, for these engines. As an AROC, Prime Turbines adds a new level of convenience for GE M601 and H Series owners and operators, allowing more flexible turnaround time for their turboprop overhauls.
