Editors Corner “Your brand is what people say about you when you are not in the room.” Jeff Bezos What was one of the nicest things a client ever said about how you conduct business? Better customer service? You proudly make this one of your key messages in your marketing materials. The problem is that your competitors also boast that they provide exceptional customer service. Better pricing?This is a dangerous competitive advantage to tout.You are, after all, in business to make a living, and your customers want you to be around in the coming years. Your goal in business is not just to be ‘different’ but also rather to be different in a way that is highly relevant to your customers. When you differentiate your business, you make it memorable and credible. It helps your prospects to quickly understand what you do and what sets you apart from your competitors. The secret to creating your unique selling proposition is understanding what your ideal clients want and making sure you deliver it better than anyone else. Being unique is infinitely better than being perfect, or being like everyone else. Understanding your business unique DNA and the core of who and what you are will help you to grow and succeed in business. On a recent interview with a client who is celebrating 80 years in business (they must be doing something right), they told us that they recently introduced a new email and marketing program to their customers. They offer a portal, allowing their customers to see how their job is progressing through the shop. It is tied to their ERP system, and it offers pictures of the job throughout the life cycle. Material is delivered to start the job, and the customer can see that their job is ready to begin. In essence, the customer has the opportunity to see their job through pictures, from start to finish. Customers love this new visual communication – it just gives them confidence that their job will be done right and on time. Another customer, a machine tool dealer, made a public pledge to their customers. If you have purchased one of their machines, and it goes down, requiring a service call, they pledge to have a service technician onsite within 24 hours. If they don’t, you will get a $500 credit for every 24-hour window missed. Wow, what a powerful value-add! Being unique in a good way is how you distinguish yourself from your customers.You can do this in many ways, including;

Announcements & Releases Good Leadership Helps Others Succeed Last week I attended a meeting where Clark Whitworth, CEO of the LHM Group spoke on leadership. Everyone in Utah knows of or been touched by the Larry H Miller Group. It brings in 6 billionin annual revenue and employs over 10,000 people. The Larry H Miller Auto Dealerships are the 10th largest in the US. The Utah Jazz continues to pack the Vivint Arena Center with record sellout crowds. Who doesn’t enjoy catching a movie at the amazing Megaplex Theatres? With over 80 businesses united in one goal of Enriching Lives coupled with the LHM Charities, this company knows the importance of leadership. Clark was closely associated with Larry Miller for 22 years and learned the culture and vision of the Miller family. He is well respected by the Miller family and the employees he leads. Of course, integrity, hard work, stewardship, and service are the foundation of their culture which is what Larry Miller was about. What really resonated with me was Clark’s statement that great leaders are totally open to sharing their knowledge to help others succeed. This personal mantra was at Larry’s core. He was all about helping others even if they were his competitors. The NTMA was founded on the same principle of helping others even if they are in the same manufacturing industry. Considering we are American families building American machined products it makes sense that we can achieve more together than by ourselves. 2019 Colorado Manufacturing Awards finalists: Northern Colorado flexes its muscles In early 2017, I wrote that Fort Collins/Loveland had become Colorado’s top manufacturing community. The list of finalists for this year’s Colorado Manufacturing Awards (CMAs) suggests I wasn’t far off. Throw in Berthoud, Longmont, Greeley, and Fort Lupton, and 11 of the 37 finalists call northern Colorado home. This standout group reflects northern Colorado’s growing stature as a regional manufacturing powerhouse.
Yet the entire list of finalists, companies from a dozen manufacturing industries across the state, projects again what no single column or awards program can: Manufacturing is again an economic dynamo, a sector ripe with possibilities. From companies you know, to accomplished industry performers and upstart brands, manufacturing’s broad and deep comeback is the big takeaway from this year’s CMAs. And we’re just getting started. Ogden-Area Machine Industry Sponsors High School Robot Battle Due To Dire Need
The winning team was from Green Canyon High School in North Logan. In past competitions, more sparks flew, but this year many teams built defensive, tank-like bots. Fewer teams chose to include offensive “weapons” like spinning blades and whacking hammers. “I like that we got to design it, and then we got to see what our designs turned into,” said Josh McCain, a senior at Roy High who participated on a combined Roy-Bonneville team. “Knowing that we built this with our own bare hands, and it’s the fruit of our labors — it’s good to see something you worked so hard on do well.”
In each round of the competition, two remote-controlled robots battled it out in a transparent plastic cage, attempting to do as much damage as possible to their competitor.
Some teams were sponsored by local companies, who paid for their materials, and others were primarily supported by their schools. This is the fourth year of the competition, and organizers would like to double the number of teams that participate next year.
During each round, one member of each team controlled the team’s robot while the others cheered him on, occasionally recommending offensive and defensive moves. In between rounds, teams took their robots back to their workspaces to rapidly repair them.
While the attraction for many participants is the fun of the competition, they also gain marketable skills.
High school teams from around the state — most of them from Northern Utah — met at Ogden-Weber Technical College Thursday to wage robot battles with bots they built as part of the Rocky Mountain Robotics League 2019 competition.

Announcements Continued The local machining industry supports the competition through the Northern Utah chapter of the National Tooling and Machining Association (NTMA). The same group pays for the winning Utah team to compete in the national competition, which involves about 80 teams from across the country. Industry is so closely involved because they are having difficulty finding skilled machinists to employ. “It’s a crisis,” said Matt Wardle, president of JD Machine in Ogden. “Our major limiting factor in growth is skilled labor.” “Every shop I know has multiple openings,” said Reid Leland, founder and president of LeanWerks Manufacturing and Engineering. “We have four openings.” The machining process, which is now computerized, takes material, usually metal or plastic, and removes parts of the material in order to create component parts for a range of products. Machining positions are also good jobs. They start at $14 an hour, and a skilled machinist makes about $30 an hour. Many machine shops also offer on-thejob training. JD Machine has a formal 4-year apprenticeship. The program begins in the classroom at OgdenWeberTechnical College and continues as apprentices work at JD Machine. Apprentices earn a pay increase every six months in the program. “We’ll hire them with no experience, we’ll put them to work, and also we’ll send them to school,” Wardle said. Participants can work full or part time at JD Machine throughout their apprenticeships. Machining is also a pathway into engineering. “An engineer that’s been a machinist is worth their weight in gold,” Wardle said, though some taking this path enjoy machining so much that they don’t pursue engineering training. Bryant Davis is the chapter president of Northern Utah chapter of NTMA and the president of Brendell Manufacturing located in North Salt Lake. There was one element that all of the teams at the competition were lacking, though. There weren’t any girls. Charlie Nielsen, Career and Technical Education Director at Bonneville High School, said that girls participate in the necessary courses, but they don’t tend to join the robotics teams, even when invited. Hope Wheelwright is an exception to that rule. She was in attendance at the robotics competition, and she participated three years ago on the Bonneville-Roy team in the 2016 when she was a junior at Roy school. She was the only girl on her team. Wheelwright said that she joined the team because she loved “working with metal,” and she likes “everything” about building robots.When she was a sophomore, she got the highest score in her class on the machining state competency exam. She said that she wants girls who are interested in machining to know that “gender does not matter” when it comes to success in machining. “Follow your dreams,” she said. “We are past the point of “Can we do it?’ We can do it. Now we are scaling it up,” Christensen said. “The idea is to keep the vehicle at the 60-80 percent charge, the sweet spot for the battery.”
SELECT was started in 2016 as a project to bring together engineers and industry experts to make electrified transportation more accessible and try to solve associated engineering concerns. “In a lot of ways, it is a world class facility,” said Ryan Bohm, the lab’s manager. “To make electric vehicles something that works for the masses and can be adapted by all, there are substantial challenges to that. We are working on all those major challenges and trying to solve them.” The research facility and test track is the only one of its kind in the United States, with the only others like it existing in Europe and South Korea. Christensen and lead researcher Regan Zane host industry leaders and engineers from all over the world to show off the facility. “You would expect to see this in Detroit or Silicon Valley,” Christensen said. “But those people come here, on a regular basis. They walk away amazed that this exists here, and at this caliber.” One of SELECT’s most ambitious projects is creating wireless power transfer on roadways — charging electric vehicles as they drive. The test track at
SELECT is electrifying a highway in Illinois later this year, Christensen said, and hopes to install an electric lane in Utah in the near future. Bohm said they eventually hope to install chargers on one lane on Utah’s Interstate 15, and if Utah hosts the 2030 Olympics, Bohm said the electric lane could be a highlight for foreign visitors. “We can certainly hope for that,” Bohm said. Wireless induction has already been implemented by Tesla, BMW, Volvo and other electric vehicle manufacturers, but Christensen said standardizing the systems and working with states to install charging roadways will be the next challenge. “The transformation has been amazing, but there is still a lot of work to be done,” he said. “We are working on all those major challenges and trying to solve them; to take what used to be just a vision, or completely unknown, and make it feasible for the masses.”The solar panels will be live in March or April, Christensen said. Google engineers are studying foldable smartphones and say they’ve designed a screen that is capable of bending into a “U” shape, two new patent filings suggest.
In their research, Google engineers found flexible screens might have a limited lifespan, determined by how often they’re opened and closed.
The patents, which were published late last year, describe a screen with thin, flexible layers that can be bent into a number of configurations, or sit fully closed like a billfold wallet.
“It can be difficult to create foldable top-emitting plastic OLED displays that have a small folding radius in both directions (i.e., having two surfaces of the display fold both towards each other and away from each other) and that can survive many fold-unfold cycles,” they wrote in one of the patent applications. “In particular, creating sturdy, durable Z-fold displays (i.e., displays with both inward and outward folds) is greatly complicated by the fragility of the thin-film layers in the display stack.”
“Modern computing devices often attempt to achieve a balance between portability and functionality,” one of the filings reads. “A tension can exist between having a display that provides for a rich display of information on a single surface, which suggests a relatively large form factor of the device to accommodate a relatively large display, and a device that is small enough to be easily carried and accessed by a user, which suggests a relatively small form factor of the device.”

duction methods, such as automation, have driven the decline in U.S. manufacturing jobs. Still, during the last economic expansion, from 2001 to 2007, the U.S. shed more than 2 million manufacturing jobs, even as overall jobs rose. Now, manufacturing jobs are again rising. Much of the work in the industry has also changed. Today, at many factories, staffers help to program and oversee robotics, or repair machinery, instead of manually performing the same task over and over again, says Michigan State University economist Charles Ballard. “We still make a lot of stuff,” Mr. Ballard says. “It just doesn’t take as many people to make that stuff.” Recent job gains have boosted the fortunes of new workers like 25-year-old Marcus Dees, who was hired full time in October 2017 by Midwest Precision Inc., an 80-person sheet-metal and plate-fabrication company in Tulsa, Okla. He previously worked delivering drywall to construction sites. Mr. Dees oversees a 350-ton press brake that bends metal, earning almost 40% more per hour than his previous job. “It changed my life,” he says. “I was in a pretty tough spot, and it turned things around.”

After years of job losses, U.S. manufacturing employment has risen for 18 straight months among those holding production or nonsupervisory jobs, the longest stretch of gains since the mid-1990s. Employers have added 274,000 non-managerial manufacturing jobs since July 2017, Labor Department figures show. While few economists predict a return to an age when manufacturing accounted for the top job in dozens of states, many say the industry has stabilized. Much of the recent job growth has come from companies producing long-lasting goods, such as transportation equipment and machinery, a point of pride for those who recall America’s manufacturing roots. “Manufacturing is critical for the nation,” says Dave Petratis, chief executive of security products maker Allegion PLC, which employs 2,500 at production and assembly facilities across the U.S. that make locks, electronic card readers and doors, among other items. “The largest economy in the world has got to have the factories and production.” Overall employment in the sector peaked at 19.6 million people in 1979; today, the industry employs about 12.8 million. Surging demand for its products has sent Republic Wire Inc. on a hiring spree in West Chester, Ohio. The producer of copper and aluminum wiring has boosted its team by 50% over five years to 140 people. The company has automated work where it can. Machines now box and label wire, and add the packages to shipping pallets—work that previously required up to nine staffers—freeing employees for higher-value tasks. Republic Wire operates 24 hours a day during the week to fulfill orders, and is looking for an additional 15 hires, said Chief Executive Ron Rosenbeck, adding that the company has increased wages 4% annually each of the past five years to retain workers, above the national rate of wage gains. The company has tried to fill roles by reaching out to local technical colleges and posting “now hiring” signs outside its facility. But the region lacks available skilled workers, Mr. Rosenbeck says, so the company has also turned to staffing agencies, hiring temporary workers for entry-level positions. The company will spend up to six months to train those temporary workers into full-time, skilled roles, such as machine operators. “Even though it’s taken us longer,” Mr. Rosenbeck says, “we’re finding that’s been the way to go to build up these people into skilled positions.” Dave Younge, an owner of Progressive Stamping & Fabrication LLC in Oklahoma City, which produces everything from seat-
belt components to compressor parts, said manufacturing jobs will continue to require higher skills, such as familiarity with automation, computer technology and training in mathematics. He says more people should consider the industry, because many manufacturers often pay for employee training programs. “Building things is fun,” Mr. Younge says. “My favorite group to pick on are political science majors. New-Collar Workers- Who Are They And How Are They Contributing To Our Labor Shortage? Artificial Intelligence is changing jobs today and creating an increasing demand of skilled workers. The US Department of Labor is predicting a shortfall of over 2 million skilled workers by 2020. What does this mean for employers? It means that companies are considering employing a new set of workers referred to as “new- collar workers”. What is a new-collar worker? Ball Aerospace has been selected to continue work on the Space Evaluation and Analysis Capability (SEAC) testbed for the second phase of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s (DARPA) Hallmark program. Where the HCSW (pronounced Hacksaw) will have a conical glide body derived from the Army’s Advanced HypersonicWeapon, and based on Sandia National Laboratory’s Swerve winged reentry vehicle, TBG is developing a wedge-shaped glide body with higher lift-to-drag ratio for increased range. In competition with Raytheon, Lockheed Martin in 2016 was awarded a $147 million DARPA contract to develop and flight-test the 500-nm-range TBG. At the time, this was described as the sole contract for the demonstration phase. But in is fiscal 2019 budget documents, the Pentagon advanced research agency revealed it planned to select a second performer “to evolve an All-Up Round (AUR) design to a critical design level of maturity.”This appears to be the DARPA contract just awarded to Raytheon. The Air Force has already leveraged Lockheed’s DARPA contract to develop an operational version of the company’s TBG, the AGM-183A Airborne Rapid-Response Weapon (AARW). The company was awarded a $480 million contract for ARRW in August 2018. Total cost will be $859 million, the Air Force says.
DARPA Awards Raytheon Contract For 2nd TBG Hypersonic Weapon DARPA has awarded Raytheon a $63.3 million contract “to further develop the Tactical Boost Glide [TBG] hypersonic weapons program.” The funding includes a critical design review for the joint DARPA/U.S. Air Force program. Raytheon, now the second company on the TBG program, also has released a new artist’s impression of its concept that, while likely still notional, shows significant changes from its earlier design image. TBG is developing technology for an air-launched, tactical-range, hypersonic weapon that sits in capability terms between the Air Force’s rocket-boosted Hypersonic Conventional Strike Weapon (HCSW) and DARPA’s scramjet-powered Hypersonic Air-breathing Weapon Concept (HAWC). Flight testing of Lockheed’s TBG demonstrator was planned for the second quarter of this year, but has slipped to the fourth quarter, according to an Air Force report to Congress. The ARRW subsystem critical design review has also slipped a similar amount, to the third quarter of this year. Procurement documents released in 2018 revealed the Air Force has been targeting an early operational capability in 2021 for ARRW—ahead of the less-advanced HCSW, for which Lockheed was awarded a $928 million contract in April 2018 and which is aimed at an initial operational capability in 2022. Various concept images for TBG glide bodies have appeared, but no hard-
ware images. DARPA uses a notional, sharply swept triangular-section cone. Images of Lockheed’s arrow-shaped HTV-2 vehicle, flight-tested unsuccessfully under DARPA’s Falcon program, also are used as TBG is based on HTV-2 technology. Raytheon originally used a featureless arrow shape, with W-shaped trailing edge, to illustrate its TBG design. Its latest concept shows a waverider shape, with a distinct, sharp-edged, ogive-planform wing that quickly blends into a wide, wedge-shaped body. This is truncated at the rear, as was the HTV-2 design. The side of the body at the junction with the thin wing shows two unexplained indentations positioned between three bands of a slightly different color that extend across the vehicle from leading edge to leading edge.The function of these bands is not apparent.
Lockheed Martin Develops Fir st LTE-Over-Satellite System Lockheed Martin has developed a new LTE-over-Satellite system designed to provide connectivity to remote regions, including areas without cellphone coverage, boats off-shore, or during natural disasters like hurricanes, wildfires, earthquakes, catastrophic floods or volcanoes. New hotspots connect existing phones to satellites for reliable 4G connections. “When disaster strikes, cell phone networks often go down – whether because of the event or because of the sheer volume of traffic,” said Maria Demaree, vice president and general manager of Mission Solutions at Lockheed Martin Space. “So, it’s important to have new ways to connect families and first reponders with people who would be otherwise cut off from contact.” Typically, during an emergency that knocks out cellular networks, specialized satellite phones are the only option for mobile connectivity. While satellite phones will still play a key role in disaster recovery, Lockheed Martin’s LTE-over-Satellite solution lets people complement satellite phones with their existing commercial phones to connect to a pop-up cellular network that is connected directly to a satellite. The system takes advantage of the fact that 4G devices are now widespread across the world. According to a 2018 Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) report, LTE now accounts for more than a third of all mobile subscriptions globally (35.7%). LTE offers broadband data
rates in addition to voice and SMS, so important photos, files and commerce can still take place even if traditional communications infrastructure is disrupted. The new mobility system isn’t limited to use during natural disaster or terrorist attacks, it can be potentially used by offshore fisherman located far from cell towers, remote mineral production outposts, scientific and research stations, and in agriculture operations. Hotspots can be mounted to vehicles, trucks, or ships to provide additional connectivity. For example, with a vehicular-mounted device, LTE-over-satellite connectivity follows a first responder straight to the scene without a separate device. of training does not prove the employee received proper training. If an individual is not able to meet the objectives of the process, then the training is deemed ineffective. The most important part of the training is measuring the effectiveness of the training based on the employee’s performance according to the objectives and expectations of the process. Employees who require little to no training do exist. On the other hand, some employees may struggle to meet the objectives lined out in the process. In the case of evaluating competency, the most effective form of training can be identified. While some require hands on training, others are more familiar with test taking, whereas some may prefer to practice using the tools the company uses. As companies get better at defining the expectations, their evaluation of employees will get better as well; while this entire process goes on, a company can also measure the effectiveness of its training programs. Requirements from the ISO 9001:2015 Standard for competence are: A. Determine the necessary competency of person’s (or persons’) work under its control that influences the performance and effectiveness of the quality management system. B. Ensure that these persons are competent concerning basis of appropriate education, training, and experience. C. When applicable, take actions to meet the necessary competency, and evaluate the effectiveness of the actions taken. d. Retain appropriate documented information to show evidence of competency. What do employees need to be aware of for ISO 9001:2015 Standard? There is a section of the ISO 9001:2015 Standard that outlines what employees need to be aware of. Previous requirements included the policy; many companies post the quality policy and employees are expected to memorize it, some companies even had it posted on the back of their employees’ badges! It is also important that the employee understands what they should do when something goes wrong in a process (control of nonconforming). For aerospace companies, employees need to be aware of all changes to documents, product safety, and the importance of ethical behavior. It has been found that the best way to train and prepare employees for how to answer questions about employee awareness during an audit is to conduct a training and go through examples for each item under section 7.3 of the standard that they need to be aware of, one by one. It is also best to let them keep documents to reference.

Tesla Unveils $39,000 Compact SUV For The Masses Tesla Inc. unveiled the fourth car in its current lineup:A compact SUV that it promises will start at $39,000, with deliveries to customers beginning late next year. Onstage, at an event in Los Angeles, CEO Elon Musk said the ModelY will come in four variants. The car’s highend performance model is capable of 0-60 in 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 150 mph. It will seat up to seven people, with 66 cubic feet of cargo space, roughly equivalent to a Jeep Grand Cherokee. The company launched its preorder page for the car’s three higher-priced models, which should begin deliveries in the fall of 2020. The base Model Y will go on sale roughly six months later, in 2021. Tesla unveils its SUV model starting at $39,000 from CNBC. On the preorder page, Tesla asks customers to put down a $2,500 deposit to secure their
place in line for a ModelY.That request, too, seems to have investors worried. “The unveiling of the ModelY electric crossover was a more subdued affair than some of Musk’s past performances, and Tesla’s customer-deposit strategy rekindled concerns about the company’s cash position,” Bloomberg noted. Tesla is steadily unveiling a complete lineup of cars, with two sedans, two SUVs, and a forthcoming luxury supercar, pickup truck and semi. The only thing missing, it seems, is an electric van. The ModelY “has the functionality of an SUV, but will ride like a sports car,” Musk said onstage. “This thing will be really tight in corners, and we expect it will be the safest midsize SUV in the world, by far.” The company gave a select group of reporters a brief test ride in the ModelY after the event.The car shares about 75 percent of its parts with the Model 3, with a nearly identical cabin. It’s about 10 percent bigger than the Model 3, which is why it costs about 10 percent more, Musk said. The announcement was short on production details, including where the car would be built, and how much it would cost to set up the production line. Earlier this year, the company said it would “most likely” build the Model Y at the Gigafactory in Nevada. The announcement comes amid significant change at Tesla.The Palo Alto-based company laid off thousands of workers in January to cut costs and flip-flopped on a plan to close most of its retail stores, ultimately deciding to keep many of them open. Quick Turn Precision Machining Adds 5-Axis Capabilities With Its Newest Mazak — An Integrex J-200S
Christmas came early for Derek Norton, Journeyman machinist at Quick Turn Precision Machining in Ogden, Utah. Derek has been working for Quick Turn for the past 5 years, and he has seen the parts being manufactured at the shop getting increasingly more complex year after year. “I enjoy machining very complex parts”, Derek says, “yet it can be frustrating machining ‘5 axis complexity’ parts on a 3 or 4 axis machine.” QuickTurn has some of the best machine tools you can get (their lathes and mills are almost exclusively Mazak), and the team had been asking owners Nate and Adam Woods for a 5-axis machining center for more than a year. Derek adds “We had a number of parts with holes at different angles –we had to spend too much time for tool change over, and we were going through expensive tools with our current machining capabilities. Now there is less tool change over and when we do change tools, it’s easier.We no longer have to dial in our live tools to achieve high accuracy on centerline. The Integrex tools are always in the same position.” The co-owners were waiting for a specific job that would easily justify the purchase of the Integrex 5 axis (4+1) machine for their business. In the end, there wasn’t a specific job; rather a number of complex jobs that the company was machining on 4-axis machines that would be machined so much more efficiently on a 5 axis machine, that made the brothers pull the trigger. In late November, Quick Turn took possession of their first 5 axis-machining center, a Mazak Integrex J-200S. This Multi-Tasking machine makes use of two turning spindles and a milling spindle (large trueY-axis design), and it also offers automatic tool changing. The main spindle chuck size is 8” with the main spindle speed being 5000 rpm. The milling spindle is a single spindle turret with an automatic tool changer system. The milling spindle speed is 12,000 rpm. “I love running the Integrex J-200S. It offers more of everything; more tools, and more capabilities - I couldn’t spin the tools fast enough on our other machines, I’ve gone from 280” per minute to 700” per minute feed. The Integrex is limited only by my imagination. It is such a cool machine.” Derek He added, “The high pressure coolant on this machine is making a big difference for me; it provides up to 1000 psi of coolant to the cutting tool, allowing for heavier cuts, higher feed rates, deep-hole drilling, and better surface finishes.” Derek says perhaps the best feature the Mazak Integrex offers is the Mazatrol SmoothG control; it makes it easy to generate CNC programs for processing complex parts through off-centerline machining as well as angled drilling, milling and tapping. he has run nearly every builders’ machines over his past decades in the industry. “I hadn’t operated a 5 axis machine, so when we brought the Integrex into our shop, Smith Machinery’s AJ Tucker came in for a week of training.” Derek says learning how to run the Mazak Integrex J-200S was relatively straightforward. “AJ is an awesome teacher, he is extremely knowledgeable, but I also found that the Mazatrol SmoothG control follows the general methods of the controls on our other Mazak machines, so it was easier to learn than I had anticipated.” “The Integrex J-200S is designed to replace traditional turret lathes with 12 station turrets, especially with repeat work. It can drill/mill at angles, each tool can work on both spindles and with the 72 tool magazine, set-up time between jobs is reduced up to 90%! We also see a dramatic reduction in mistakes and crashes! It’s the perfect job shop mill/turn center.” Smith Machinery Owner Clark Smith Derek says, “The Mazatrol SmoothG Control offers an outstanding control, one that is so intuitive and user friendly. For many parts, I can do all of my programming right out on the machine, and when needed, the Mazatrol SmoothG software integrates with EIA (G & M code) programs as a subset of the Mazatrol program.” Today, Derek is machining 3 very complex parts on the Integrex J-200S. He estimates that he is reducing the time needed to complete one of the jobs by 2 months, and by 2 operations. On another part, Derek is using 1 tool that is, in essence, 6 tools, without one tool change out. “For all 3 of these parts, we would have still taken the jobs, but it would have taken longer and it would have cost us more time and
money to produce them.” Today, Derek sets up the Integrex J-200S, and is able to machine parts on one of the Mazak Quick Turn Nexus machines simultaneously. Derek says it would be nice to get another Integrex. Utah’s Tech Sector Now Accounts For More Than 300,000 Jobs In The State, A New Study Finds Employment in Utah’s technology sector has grown at twice the national average over the past 10 years and the industry now supports 1 in every 7 jobs in the state, a new study says. With more than 116,100 in direct employment, the tech sector’s influence on Utah’s overall economy is now ahead of the state’s real estate industry — only with an average yearly compensation of $102,000 per position, nearly 75 percent higher than the average of $58,400 paid per job in other industries. Spending in Utah by tech companies and their workers supported another 186,000 non-tech jobs on top of that, meaning that what analysts refer to as the state’s “tech and innovation economy” accounted for nearly a sixth of Utah’s total gross domestic product in 2017, according to the first-of-its-kind study by the University of Utah’s Kem C. The taxpayer-backed research paper was released Monday at the Utah Legislature in Salt Lake City as part of a “Tech Day on the Hill,” sponsored by Gov. Gary Herbert’s Office of Economic Development (GOED). Ranging from startups to tech firms with billion-dollar-plus valuations, firms that make up on the Utah’s technology sector centered along Silicon Slopes have been a key driver in the state’s recent economic success, according to Levi Pace, senior research analyst at the Gardner Institute and the study’s lead researcher. “Utah’s tech companies compete on a big stage when it comes to software, IT services, devices, and e-commerce,” Pace said in a statement.

Put another way, nearly 14.5 percent of all earnings by Utah workers in 2017 came either directly from tech companies or from companies outside the sector that were supported by its spending. The industry supported 15.2 percent of all jobs in Utah, either directly or indirectly.

The study analyzed four parts of Utah’s technology sector: IT support; information technology, such as software and telecommunications; trade and e-commerce; and manufacturing — but excluded in-house programmers and IT support specialists working at non-tech-related companies in Utah. Analysts drew on input from three Utah trade associations: Silicon Slopes, Utah Technology Council and Women Tech Council, along with GOED and the Economic Development Corporation of Utah. Utah’s tech industry averaged 3.6 percent job growth per year from 2007 to 2017, according to the findings, for a growth rate that was more than double that of the industry on a national level. Average earnings per job in the sector came in at $77,200 yearly in 2017, compared to $50,600 for all other industries in the state. The sector’s 116,100 jobs that year put it ahead of employment by the real estate industry and administrative and support-services sectors in Utah. Only finance and insurance; hospitality and food services; local government; and the construction sectors accounted for more direct employment in the state, the study found. Returning AstronautsToThe Moon: Lockheed Martin Finalizes Full-Scale Cislunar Habitat Prototype For long-duration, deep space missions, astronauts will need a highly efficient and reconfigurable space, and Lockheed Martin is researching and designing ways to suppor t those missions. Under a public-pr ivate partnership as a part of NASA’s Next Space Technologies for Exploration Partnerships (NextSTEP) Phase II study contract, Lockheed Martin has completed the initial ground prototype for a cislunar habitat that would be compatible with NASA’s Gateway architecture. This habitat will help NASA study and assess the critical capabilities needed to build a sustainable presence around the Moon and support pioneering human exploration in deep space. The full-scale prototype, or Habitat Ground Test Article (HGTA), is built inside of a repurposed shuttle-era cargo container, called a MultiPurpose Logistics Module (MPLM), at Kennedy Space Center. the team customized the interior making full use of the entire volume of the module to accommodate a variety of tasks like science missions and personal needs of future astronauts. The team also studied how to apply the advanced, deep space capabilities that are already built in to NASA’s Orion spacecraft. Through additional research and development funding, the NextSTEP team also applied mixed-reality technology to further refine the concept. Over the past five months, the team used tools like virtual and augmented reality to simplify and streamline the build-up process. They also applied expertise from Lockheed Martin’s heritage of operating autonomous interplanetary robotic missions, like OSIRISREx and InSight, to integrate reliable robotic capabilities in to the design. The Lockheed Martin team will soon transition the prototype to the NASA NextSTEP team for assessment. During the week of March 25, a team of NASA astronauts will live and work inside the prototype, evaluating the layout and providing feedback. The NASA test team will also validate the overall design and will be able to evaluate the standards and common interfaces, like the International Docking System Standard (IDSS), and how to apply those systems for longterm missions based at the Lunar Gateway. Once NASA testing has completed, Lockheed Martin will continue to optimize and study the prototype to prepare for other Lunar efforts.

It has the power to change the way we create, and the way we interact with our world. It has completely altered our products, our workplaces, and our modes of communication. And it has shaped entire generations, defined cultures, and reimagined industries. Today, technology is the driving force behind change in the manufacturing industry. We see it in everywhere we look. Paper has been replaced by touch screens. Meetings are conducted via Skype instead of face to face. Factories are more measured, more data driven, more agile, and more nimble than ever before. Artificial intelligence and robots are now a part of our daily lives. There is no doubt that these advancements have brought disruption, and cost to manufacturing. But the rise of technology in our industry has been vital in keeping us competitive and essential for sustaining the industry in the future. Manufacturing is more efficient, productive, and adaptable today than it was twenty years ago. There’s a greater understanding of
what happens on the plant floor, with more real-time data to guide decision making. With new software and technology, we’re seeing our industry reach new levels of performance that we couldn’t have imagined even a decade ago. Today, many factories are upping their performance by operating like video games. Gamification is taking the industry by storm, with systems designed to align with the natural motivations that people have to make a difference, and be recognized in how they drive plant floor performance. Increasing transparency and tracking achievements by individual user or teams has resulted in huge gains in efficiency for some companies.When contributions are seen by peers and managers, this motivates those people to continue to problem solve and innovate. When properly designed, gamification is making employees more engaged, productive, and happier. But most importantly, gamification and technology are opening the door to connect with a younger generation, who quite frankly, haven’t shown much interest in the manufacturing industry to date. When we look at the data on available jobs in the manufacturing industry, it’s sobering to say the least.According toThe Manufacturing Institute, 3.5 million manufacturing jobs will need to be filled over the next ten years. Two million of those jobs will go unfilled. Not thousands. Two million. This is a wake-up call for our industry. At my company, we read the statistic fromThe Manufacturing Institute and wanted to figure out why more Americans are not pursuing careers in manufacturing. We were also interested to see if there were any differences in perspectives by generation.We commissioned Engine, a survey provider, to poll 1,002 Americans demographically representative of the United States at a 95 percent confidence level. Responses were then grouped by generation, Baby Boomers (19461964), Generation X (1965-1980), and Millennials (1981-1998). We were shocked by how significantly the responses varied by generation.When asked whether respondents agreed or disagreed that manufacturing jobs are important to the U.S. economy, 86 percent of both Baby Boomers and Generation X agreed. In comparison, only 68 percent of Millennials agreed that manufacturing is critical to our economy. We then asked respondents about the supply of skilled workers in the U.S., and again observed differences by generation. Sixty percent of Baby Boomers and 63 percent of Generation X agreed that there is a shortage of skilled workers in the U.S. In contrast, only 51 percent of Millennials agreed that there is a shortage. Lastly, we asked respondents if they agreed that the manufacturing industry offers fulfilling careers. Fifty nine percent of both Baby Boomers and Generation X agreed.To our surprise, only 49 percent Millennials agreed.That’s less than half of the younger generation who believe our industry offers desirable or satisfying opportunities.This is a test for our industry, because our future workforce depends on what we do today to reach the younger generation. The truth is, our industry hasn’t done a great job at connecting with younger audiences about what makes manufacturing compelling or
