Munger The pandemic clearly wreaked havoc with our lives. As we are emerging from this worldwide crisis, we can evaluate what good has come of this. And at least here in the United States, the pandemic had a very positive impact on our savings. The U.S. personal saving rate — the percentage of people’s income remaining each month after taxes and spending — skyrocketed to a record 32.2% in April, according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. To put this into perspective, data from the Federal Reserve shows the previous record American saving rate of 17.3% occurred more than 45 years ago, in May 1975. Time will tell if these record savings will have a lasting impact, but if all goes well, it just may have offered the best opportunity to change America’s savings habits for the better. A recent Schwab survey asked Americans how they expect their finances to change after the COVID-19 pandemic. Nearly half of survey respondents said they intended to save more overall.Further, about 34% of respondents are planning to pay off debt after the pandemic. For anyone who wants to retire, that’s a great first step. We’ve all heard about ‘the millionaire next door’, how often these individuals don’t live outlandishly – in fact they live well below their means. PH.D Thomas Stanley conducted decades of research on the habits and characteristics of America’s wealthy individuals and shared some very telling insights: • The vast majority do not have exceptional skills nor did they inherit large sums of money • They did share common attributes or behaviors that helped them to secure financial success: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

They live well below their means They believe financial independence is more important than high social status Their parents didn’t provide in the words of the author ‘economic outpatient care’ As well, their adult children are economically self sufficient They chose, and likely they helped their children to choose, the right occupation.

Key to this is that becoming the ‘millionaire next door’ is very largely determined by the choices you make. According to Stanley, the most productive accumulators of wealth spend far less than they can afford on homes, cars, clothes, vacations, meals, and entertainment. And most ‘millionaires next door’ are frugal, and they are likely happier than others because they are not dependent on their families, their employers, or the government. They maximized their incomes, minimized their outgo, and saved and invested the difference. COVID helped those who weren’t savers to save more and spend less. This is something good for all of us, and for our economy as a whole. I wish this for you, and don’t we all wish that our government could practice some of this financial prudence. It wouldn’t just benefit us today, but it would put less of a financial burden on our next generations. COVID was indeed horendous, but if it can help

us to save better, then we’ve realized some benefit. Until next issue, God bless our troops, our Front liners and our manufacturing industry.

AMT: Manufacturing Technology Orders Nearly Double Year-Over-Year AMT President Woods said 2021 is shaping up to be a historic year as the bounce back from the pandemic continued.

U.S. Manufacturing Technology Orders totaled $448 million in May, which were nearly double that of May 2020, according to the U.S. Manufacturing Technology Orders report published Monday by AMT – The Association For Manufacturing Technology. May orders were up 11% when compared to April’s orders. Total orders for 2021 topped $2 billion two months before that milestone was reached in 2020. “Given the state of the economy last year, orders were expected to be up, but so A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

far, 2021 is shaping up to be a historic year,” said Douglas K. Woods, president of AMT. “In only three other years since 1998 have orders surpassed $2 billion by May. Manufacturers across the industry have expressed broadly positive sentiment, so we would expect the remainder of the year not only to return to the pre-pandemic trend but also to exceed previous forecasts. “Despite the general optimism felt across manufacturing sectors, one common impediment to growth is the inability to find sufficient labor. Manufacturing employment is still about half a million jobs below pre-pandemic levels, and the current number of open positions in the manufacturing industry is double the February 2020 level. Growth with fewer employees occurs regularly during manufacturing recessions, according to work done by the Brookings Institution. Equipment Finance Industry Confidence Higher in July The Equipment Leasing & Finance Foundation (the Foundation) releases the July 2021 Monthly Confidence Index for the Equipment Finance Industry (MCI-EFI) . The index reports a qualitative assessment of both the prevailing business conditions and expectations for the future as reported by key executives from the $900 billion equipment finance sector. Overall, confidence in the equipment finance market is 72.9, an increase from the June index of 71.3. When asked about the outlook for the future, MCI-EFI survey respondent Bruce J. Ball Corp. is expanding its international manufacturing capacity by building new plants in England and Russia as the growth in demand for aluminum cans continues to surge.

It would be the company’s third plant in the United Kingdom, built to supply beverage company customers in that country that have been expanding use of aluminum cans through sales of hard seltzers, wines, ready-to-drink cocktails, and pure or enhanced water products.

The Westminster-based company plans to start building the new can factories this year, with each of the completed plants increasing Ball’s production by billions of cans per year starting 2023, the company said.

In Russia, the fast growth of beer and energy drinks packaged in aluminum cans is a driver for Ball to build a plant in Ulyanovsk, in Western Russia. That would be the fourth Ball can plant in Russia.

The projects add to the multiple plants Ball has in each country already. The company expects to add up to 200 permanent, skilled jobs in each country to staff the can factories, Ball said.

Ball is striving to capture growth that could require as much as 45 billion cans of added annual production capacity worldwide by 2025.

Companies moving away from plastic containers for beverages and favoring the more recyclable aluminum cans is driving the long-term growth Ball foresees, the company says. Cans have also grown in popularity among craft beer makers and have been the container of choice for the hard cider brands that spiked in popularity in the United States.

The 22,000-employee company is building a $200 million plant in the Czech Republic that’s expected to start can production in late 2022.

Lockheed Martin Readies NASA’s Lucy Spacecraft For 4 Billion-Mile Journey To Rare Asteroids A NASA robotic space probe named Lucy will soon leave Lockheed Martin Space, where it was built southwest of Denver, and start a 12-year, 4 billion-mile trip to reveal secrets of the solar system’s origins. The journey, slated to launch Oct. 16, requires surviving the harsh radiation and brutal cold of space and three passes of the earth to get Lucy a speed boost from the planet’s gravity. Despite the complexity of the flight and the spacecraft, the hard part of developing Lucy was the Covid-19 pandemic, said Richard Lipe, who oversees the Lucy program for Lockheed Martin Space. The company put Lucy into a chamber and subjected it to the freezing temperatures of deep space, vibrations, and up to 150 decibels of sound simulating the stresses of launch. The clean room and program work areas require people to don special suits, shoe covers and gloves. That added to Covid-19 protections and made for a safe-seeming environment to work in with a pandemic going on, but even so, the team figured out handling many spacecraft assembly and testing tasks while working remotely, said Cory Prykull, manager of the team assembling and testing Lucy. The company is reusing a shipping container that protected the space probe Cassini during its transport from testing from the headquarters campus to the launchpad at Cape Canaveral. Lucy will take that same journey from Jefferson County to Buckley Space Force Base for the military cargo plane flight in late summer, accompanied by Prykull the entire way. “Once it’s on a plane, it’s real. We’re almost there,” he said. Harold Levison, chief scientist at the Southwest Research Institute office in Boulder, conceived of Lucy and is principal investigator leading the research that’s hoped to shed light on the formation of planets in our solar system by examining a rare type of asteroids, known as Trojans, that orbit in the same gravitational plane as Jupiter.

NASA selected the Lucy mission in 2017 for one of its Discovery class projects, capped at $450 million in spacecraft and mission development cost. The Lucy spacecraft, launched atop a rocket made by Centennialbased United Launch Alliance, will fly by four Trojan asteroids over 12 months starting in 2027. Then, after crossing the solar system, it’s slated to reach the second swarm of Trojan asteroids in 2033. Lucy’s first asteroid pass won’t be of a Trojan asteroid, but of one from the inner asteroid belt, in 2025. That asteroid, fittingly, is 52246 donaldjahanson, an asteroid named after paleoanthropologist Donald Johanson, who discovered the primate fossil that became known as “Lucy.”By Greg Avery – Denver Business Journal

Ford Motor Co. and ride-hailing group Lyft announced plans to team up on an autonomous ridehailing venture that will begin with pilot projects in Miami and Austin, Texas. Under the program Ford self-driving cars, with safety drivers, will be deployed on the Lyft network in Miami later this year and in Austin starting in 2022. The companies are planning to deploy at least 1,000 autonomous vehicles on the Lyft network in various locations over the next five years. Lyft will take a stake in the autonomous platform Argo AI, which will supply the technology for the venture. “This collaboration marks the first

time all the pieces of the autonomous vehicle puzzle have come together this way,” Lyft co-founder and chief executive Logan Green said. “Each company brings the scale, knowledge and capability in their area of expertise that is necessary to make autonomous ride-hailing a business reality.” The venture is the latest step toward deploying robo-taxis on American roadways, with several test projects underway and a fully autonomous commercial service deployed in Arizona by Google parent-owned Waymo. Reata Adds To Its Mazak Machining Centers With The Newest VARIAXIS i-300 “We do the difficult parts that keep our customers up at night” — Grady Cope, Reata Engineering and Machine Works

With an education on Mazak technology coupled with Mazak-provided financing, Cope purchased his first Mazak in 2011. “It was a Mazak INTEGREX i-200s CNC Multi-Tasking machine that combines a turning center and machining center for full 5-axis machining and Done-In-One manufacturing,” says Randy Breitenbach, owner of Action Machinery.

Cope believes in the value of adopting innovative new technology. In 2011, he accepted the position of Chairman of the National Tooling and Machining Association (NTMA), which gave him the opportunity to travel to shops throughout the United States. “All around the country, nearly all of the highly successful shops were focused on automation. They invested in machine tools that afforded them the ability to run lights out, to minimize set ups, and to reduce their workforce needs,” says Cope. He saw the financial and technical benefits of investing in automation first-hand.

Since that first purchase, Mazak has become Reata’s standard for machine tools. Says Cope, “We selected a superior machine tool for our business, one that offers some of the best automation technology around. Mazak machines are just outstanding for hard parts. In our business, consistency with the machining centers and the machine tool dealer we buy from in our shop is beneficial in so many ways.” This consistency helps to speed up training for new employees, who only need to get familiar with one control. Cope also says that creating partnerships with dealers and builders allows for better service and more opportunity to learn about upcoming technology.

During one trip as NTMA Chairman, Cope visited Mazak’s US factory in Florence, Kentucky. During a lunch session he was seated next to Brian Papke, then-president of Mazak’s US operations. “When we talked, Brian asked why I didn’t own a Mazak,” Cope says. When Cope returned to Englewood, the local Mazak distributor, Action Machinery, had a salesperson at his door the next day.

Cope and the Reata team work to stay ahead of the technological curve. One of their recent acquisitions was the Mazak VARIAXIS i-300 AWC (Auto Work Changer), a highly versatile full simultaneous 5-axis Vertical Machining Center with a large tool storage capacity and an automatic pallet changing system.

Reata recognizes that monitoring and understanding machine tool utilization is a key factor in optimizing operations,” says Tucker. The Reata team isn’t immune to the staffing challenges every machine shop faces, though Cope has adopted forward-thinking strategies to solve this problem as well. Cope says women constitute one of US manufacturing’s largest pools of untapped talent. A Deloitte study estimated that women make up about 50% of US workers, yet they comprise less than one third of the manufacturing workforce. At Reata, 65% of women are employed in leadership roles – twice the industry norm. “If you aren’t hiring and promoting women in your manufacturing entity,” says Cope, “you are missing out on half the talent in the US.”

They are very interested in using feedback from actual users to continue to improve their machines,” says Cope. The VARIAXIS i-300 AWC has been an outstanding addition to Reata’s shop, Cope says. “Its 204 tools and 40 pallets with a robot on one machine offers the productivity equivalent to 3 vertical mills running 24x7. And where we would need 4 people to run 24x7 on the VARIAXIS i-300, without it we would require 12 people on the vertical mills.” Cope says that the team at Action Machinery provides excellent service to his company, with a strong emphasis on training. “Randy [Breitenbach] and his team recognize that the Mazak machine their customers invest in will only produce the best parts in the most economic manner if they understand the machine completely,” says Cope. After Reata’s VARIAXIS i-300 was delivered during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Action Machinery sent Applications Engineer AJ Tucker to their shop. Since hotels weren’t available, Tucker stayed in his trailer for a week to assist with set up and training. Cope says Tucker was invaluable to the team – he helped get their first parts up and running on the machine, and he provided informal training on

He sits on the board of the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS), where 24 students have completed journey level credentials this year. DARPA hopes the new engine systems can slash travel times between low-earth orbit and the moon, a project it calls the Demonstration Rocket for Agile Cislunar Operations, or DRACO. Sierra Space has been hired by General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems to build propulsion components and provide integration services for the nuclear-powered spacecraft. General Atomics won a $22 million contract in April from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA, to develop nuclear propulsion for a demonstration satellite the agency wants to put in orbit in 2025. Idaho Department Of Labor Receives $4.25 Million Grant For Apprenticeship Program The Idaho Department of Labor’s Apprenticeship Idaho program will be getting a $4.25 million boost, thanks to a new federal grant. “Idaho employers have one thing in common – they tell me they need a pipeline of skilled workers with industryspecific training and hands-on experience,” Governor Brad Little said. “By participating in a Registered Apprenticeship program, these same employers can create a customized talent pipeline with extensive education and training in one of more than 1,200 occupations.” The Idaho Department of Labor will use the money to develop a “robust recruitment strategy for reaching underserved populations,” according to a release from the department. They’ll also work to create a federally recognized Registered Apprenticeship program for in-demand industries, like advanced manufacturing, health care, and information technology. Apprenticeship Idaho was first established in 2016 with the help of a $200,000 USDOL planning grant.

NASA picks 2 Colorado-Built Spacecraft For Missions To Venus

NASA is sending two scientific probes to the planet Venus late in this decade, and a Colorado space company is building both spacecraft. The space agency selected two robotic research missions headed to Earth’s nearest neighbor for its latest Discovery missions, narrowing down from four researcher-led proposals chosen as finalists in 2020.

It will be the first U.S.-led mission into Venus’ atmosphere since 1978. The second Venus research mission that NASA chose is being called VERITAS, which stands for Venus Emissivity, Radio Science, InSAR, Topography, and Spectroscopy.

The two winning missions to Venus, both of which have partnered with Jefferson County-based Lockheed Martin Space for spacecraft development, are splitting about $1 billion in NASA funding.

The Veritas orbiter will use radar and infrared mapping to chart surface elevations of nearly all of Venus’ surface and determine rock types and whether active volcanoes are releasing vapor, NASA said.

The new NASA missions will study the hothouse planet’s atmosphere and geology.

The aim is to understand the planet’s geology and how the planet developed to be so different from earth.

One spacecraft, known as DAVINCI+, is designed to measure the composition of Venus’ thick atmosphere by sending a descent sphere down into it, measuring gases and other elements as it goes. DAVINCI+ also will measure suspected tectonic plate features of Venus’ surface.

German, Italian and French space institutes are building mapping instruments for the spacecraft, NASA said. The research is led by Suzanne Smrekar, of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, which will manage the project.

The mission, whose name is short for Deep Atmosphere Venus Investigation of Noble Gases, Chemistry and Imaging Plus, is led by principal investigator James Garvin, of NASA’s Goddard Space

Colorado-Based Maxar Reveals Contract Worth Millions For Earth-Monitoring Satellites

Maxar Technologies Inc. is already attracting millions in added revenue from its new Earth-observation satellite fleet, months before the first of them launch to orbit.

Maxar last said it plans to have the first three in orbit from a single SpaceX rocket launch before the end of 2021.

The Westminster-based aerospace company revealed that an unidentified foreign government added a contract provision worth $35 million related to its direct access to and use of images and data from Maxar’s Worldview Legion satellites, including 3D data capabilities. Maxar, with its business line formerly known as DigitalGlobe, has long been a provider of unclassified satellite imagery and data used by U.S. government agencies, allied nations’ governments and for commercial uses. It has for several years designed and is building a fleet of six new satellites, which it calls WorldView Legion, that the company will add to its fleet of existing, larger Earth-monitoring satellites. It had hoped to launch the first WorldView Legion orbiters early this year, but supply chain and manufacturing slowed down due to Covid-19 workplace changes that started in 2020 and continued into this spring. That postponed the likely launch until this fall, then more specific issues pushed the likely launch date into the fourth quarter of this year. A variety of small-satellite imaging and data startups have formed to launch low-earth orbit satellite and compete against Maxar for some of its business. Sen. Mike Crapo introduces bill to bolster domestic semiconductor manufacturing Idaho Sen. Mike Crapo introduced legislation to incentivize domestic manufacturing of semiconductors. The proposal comes amid a global microchip shortage that’s straining industries from personal computers to automobiles. The Facilitating American-Built Semiconductors (FABS) Act would create a 25% investment tax credit for investments in semiconductor manufacturing, both for manufacturing equipment and the construction of semiconductor manufacturing facilities, said a news release. The proposal includes incentives for the manufacturing of semiconductors, as well as for the manufacturing of the specialized tooling equipment required in the semiconductor

manufacturing process. Crapo, a Republican and ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee, introduced the bill with Committee Chairman Sen. Ron Wyden, a Democrat from Oregon. “Helping American semiconductor manufacturers strengthen their supply chains to better protect critical technologies is a longstanding bipartisan effort,” Crapo said in the release. “…Leveraging federal government incentives to bolster American companies and bring chip and semiconductor manufacturing back to the United States is critical. This tax incentive is a great step toward our goal of fortifying our supply chains, strengthening national security and boosting economic competitiveness.” The share of global semiconductor production in the United States has dropped from 37% in 1990 to 12% today, the release said. Meanwhile, 75% of global production is now based in East Asia. That’s where a slowdown in current production — a result of the coronavirus pandemic as well as natural disasters — is forcing auto dealers, which can use up to thousands of microchips in each vehicle, to keep mostly finished cars on factory floors. Leaders of Boise semiconductor manufacturer Micron Technology applauded the proposal, suggesting it would enhance the U.S. competitiveness, accelerate innovation and spur economic growth. As part of the proposal, taxpayers could elect to receive the tax credit as a direct payment, and must choose to do so before their facility or equipment is placed in service. 5 Things New CNC Operators Must Know Shops are hiring CNC machine operators that show aptitude versus experience. Despite this, there are five fundamental building blogs that be understood before true training can begin. Today’s manufacturing companies find it nearly impossible to find and hire qualified CNC machinists. Indeed, most find it difficult to find people that have any shop experience at all. Instead, they must hire people who simply show an interest in and (hopefully) have aptitude for manufacturing – and train them from scratch. What should new CNC machinists know? There are five subjects that would-be CNC machinists must understand before they can spend meaningful time on a specific CNC machine tool. 1. Shop safety - First and foremost, newcomers to manufacturing must understand that the shop floor is a dangerous place. You must convey general concerns in two areas: safety equipment that workers use and safety practices to which they must adhere. Also include any unique safety issues with which your company contends. 2. Shop math - You must ensure that newcomers can use a calculator to add, subtract, multiply and divide. CNC operators must be able to repeatedly perform simple calculations without making any mistakes. 3. Blueprint reading - Anyone working with CNC machines must be able to interpret a 3D workpiece from a series of 2D views on an engineering drawing. This involves understanding line types (visible, hidden, center, section, etc.) and orthographic projection. Fortunately, CNC operators will have a finished workpiece (machined during setup) for reference and comparison. Operators must also be able to interpret dimensions to judge the size of each workpiece attribute. 4. Tolerance interpretation - Newcomers must understand that every workpiece attribute has an amount of allowable error, whether it be specified or implied. The kind of tolerance that is of most concern to CNC operators is the dimensional tolerance. Attributes with type of tolerance can be easily adjusted. Point out that dimensional tolerances can be specified in three ways: 1) plus or minus a value, 2) high and low limit and 3) plus one value and minus another. Concentrate on the methods used in your company. Be sure your new CNC operators must also know the value you expect them to target when adjustments are required, which is often the mean value. Test arithmetic skills by providing a lot of examples and practice. Ask your new CNC operators to determine whether a measured attribute is within the tolerance band. If it is not, ask them to determine the amount and polarity of the required adjustment.Newcomers should also be exposed to geometric tolerances, but let them know that workpiece attributes with these tolerances are not as easily manipulated as those with dimensional tolerances. 5. Measuring devices - Explain the two basic types: fixed and variable gages. Go into detail for any fixed gages your CNC operators use, including go/no-go gages and gages that incorporate a dial indicator. If your company incorporates different types dial indicators in your fixed gages, be sure to explain the increment value for the dial (0.001, 0.0005, 0.0001 inch, etc.). Be sure people understand the variable gages they will be using. Most common are micrometers and calipers, but again, make sure you include any others your company uses. Most gages, and especially variable gages, require practice to master. In addition, there is a certain feel, bordering on intuition, that is required to ensure good readings. Be sure to provide a lot of practice.

With these five topics understood, newcomers will be able to take measurements and determine whether the measured attribute is within its tolerance band. If it is not, they will be able to determine whether the workpiece can still be saved by removing more material. They also will be able to determine the adjustment amount (value and polarity) that will bring the workpiece attribute back to its target value.
