“We’re sorry to every family we’ve let down…. We are making significant investments to ensure this never happens again… These steps we’re taking won’t end the struggles of families today, but we will not rest until it is done. I will not rest. I want everyone to trust us to do what is right, and I know that must be earned back.” When I first read about this public apology issued by Robert Ford, CEO Abbott Laboratories, I thought how unusual it was for a business leader to take full responsibility for a customer issue, albeit a very serious customer issue, and to publicly apologize. At some point, every company makes a mistake that requires an apology. More often than not, companies fail to apologize effectively, if at all, which can severely damage their reputations and their relationships with their customers. Apologies are difficult in life in general, for most, and perhaps are even more challenging in business. When considering when and how to apologize, many business leaders can become gripped by indecision. That’s understandable. A company mistake is often caused by a single division or employee, and a bad situation is frequently made worse by events beyond its control. It can feel unjust for a CEO or an entire organization to have to take responsibility. But more often than not, it’s just the right thing to do. Most apologies are low cost—and many create substantial value. They can help defuse a tense situation. When a company apologizes, it accepts full or partial blame for causing harm. The way an apology is delivered can matter just as much as the content of the apology. Informal language and personal communication can help. Recall Zuckerberg’s use of the phrase “We really messed this one up” in his apology when Facebook launched new features that created privacy concerns. The best apologies show candor. They leave no room for equivocation or misinterpretation, and they make absolutely clear that the organization acknowledges both the harm that was caused and its own responsibility. Consider the candid apology Razer’s CEO gave after severe delays for preorders of the company’s Blade laptop in 2014. “We’ve been doing a terrible job anticipating and meeting demand for our products…We suck at this. I suck at this. I apologize to all of you who have had to wait for ages each time we launch a new product.” But… In assessing whether or not to apologize, business leaders must also focus on the extent to which they are willing—and able—to change the company’s behavior. If they can’t or don’t want to do things differently in the future, the case for making an apology is weak, because it will sound hollow and unconvincing. Apologizing is a human behavior that acknowledges and resolves an issue. In business, it’s more than learned behavior; it’s an essential part of a growth strategy. I challenge you to try it the next time you let your customers, employees or other stakeholders down. Until next issue, I wish you the best, and as always, God bless our troops and our front liners.

months, even as employment contracted and firms continue to face supply challenges, according to a business survey released. The Institute for Supply Management said its manufacturing index rose to 56.1% from 55.4% in April, beating expectations and staying above the 50% threshold indicating expansion for the 24th consecutive month. Prices showed signs of easing, but employment entered contraction territory, falling 1.3 points to 49.6%, the report said. “The U.S. manufacturing sector remains in a demand-driven, supply chain-constrained environment,” ISM manufacturing survey chair Timothy Fiore said. “Sentiment remained strongly optimistic regarding demand.”However, he said, 10% of firms surveyed said they continue to have difficulty getting material from Asian suppliers. “Overseas partners’ disruptions are beginning to impact U.S. manufacturing, creating a nearterm headwind for factory output growth,” he said. 55 • Nov / Dec Continued page 8

Comments from survey respondents reflected signs of optimism. “Suppliers are seeing a light at the end of the tunnel for restoration of (semiconductor) component supply,” one Computer & Electronic Products executive said. Oren Klachkin of Oxford Economics flagged the positive signals in the report but said even though China is loosening lockdowns, supply issues will persist. “Supply-chain conditions will remain highly strained and are unlikely to return to pre-Covid norms any time soon,” he said. “Growth in the manufacturing sector will moderate, but a mix of still-healthy goods spending and backlogs will keep factory output rising in the second half of A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Announcements & Releases training to individuals impacted by COVID-19 at no cost. Training will be aligned to employers needs and curated primarily from Idaho institutions. The WDC has been working on two initiatives that can be leveraged to stand up this skills training program relatively quickly. The first is Idaho LAUNCH – a marketing campaign that was designed to encourage Idahoans, with a focus on those under 40, to take advantage of existing training opportunities that lead to indemand jobs in their region of the state. Idaholaunch.com has been built and the WDC was just beginning to test the messaging before kicking off a social media campaign as the COVID-19 pandemic unfolded. The second initiative is the creation of a new policy under the Workforce Development Training Fund. In January, the WDC discussed the need to fill a gap for individuals who want to pursue additional education and training; but either the training program does not qualify for federal financial aid, or the individual does not qualify for support under the traditional workforce system programs. The Policy Committee had already started working on a framework to provide financial assistance to these individuals and has now prioritized bringing the recommendation to the WDC for approval in July. In addition, WDC staff have been working across 10 agencies to identify a list of high-quality industry- recognized credentials that employers are seeking through their job postings to direct the assistance to developing the specific skills that Idaho’s A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

employers are requesting.
These two initiatives will be enhanced by employer data regarding the specific skills they need individuals to develop as the recovery progresses. A survey of Idaho employers will be conducted with an emphasis on regional needs and those skills will be mapped to training opportunities – first targeting existing programs at Idaho’s institutions and then curating opportunities where there are gaps. Comparable state programs have been launched in Maine and Connecticut. A nearly identical program is being launched in Utah on June 1. Please contact Wendi Secrist at wendi.secrist@wdc.idaho.gov or (208) 870-6573.

Robots Pick Up More Work at Busy Factories Robots are turning up on more factory floors and assembly lines as companies struggle to hire enough workers to fill rising orders. Orders for workplace robots in the U.S. increased by a record 40% during the first quarter compared with the same period in 2021, according to the Association for Advancing Automation, the robotics industry’s trade group. Robot orders, worth $1.6 billion, climbed 22% in 2021, following years of stagnant or declining order volumes, the group said.
Rising wages and worker shortages, compounded by increases in Covid19-related absenteeism, are changing some manufacturers’ attitudes about robotics, executives said. “Before, you could throw people at a problem instead of finding a more elegant solution,” said Joe Montano, chief executive Continued next page

Announcements & Releases officer of Delphon Industries LLC, a maker of packaging for semiconductors, medical devices and aerospace components.
Delphon, based in Hayward, Calif., lost 40% of its production days during January when the coronavirus spread through its workforce. The disruption accelerated the company’s purchase of three additional robots earlier this year, Mr. Montano said. A worker at Athena Manufacturing prepares a piece of equipment to be smoothed out by a robotic grinder. Manufacturers in the U.S., where workers typically have been abundant and wages stable, have been slower to embrace robotics than those in some other industrialized countries. The number of robots deployed in the U.S. per 10,000 workers has traditionally trailed countries such as South Korea, Japan and Germany, according to the International Federation of Robotics. The use of industrial robots in North America for years had been concentrated in the automotive industry, where robots took on repetitive tasks such as welding on assembly lines. While auto
1/24/22 9:51 PM
makers and manufacturers of auto components accounted for 71% of robot orders in 2016, their share declined to 42% in 2021, the automation association said. Meanwhile, robots made inroads into other sectors including food production, consumer products and pharmaceuticals. Executives said improved capabilities are allowing robots to be programmed for more-complex tasks requiring a mixture of strength and nimbleness. At Athena Manufacturing LP, a fabricating and machining company for metal equipment used in the semiconductor, energy and aerospace industries, Chief Financial Officer John Newman said customers have been ramping up orders, but Athena has struggled to find enough workers to staff a second weekday shift and a weekend shift. The Austin, Texas, company purchased seven robots in the past 18 months, including one that grinds down the welds on steel frames for holding semiconductor equipment. Mr. Newman said Athena has spent more than $800,000 on robots, including about $225,000 for the grinding robot alone. The investments aimed to increase Athena’s capacity to handle orders, he said, more than lowering costs.By Bob TitaFollow, WSJ A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Aerospace Boom Draws Industry Supplier Growth To Denver Area It’s not just the marquee aerospace contractors and commercial space giants that are dramatically expanding in Colorado. The industry’s growth is prompting companies that have typically been suppliers in space to build a bigger presence in the Denver metro area too, citing the growing business opportunities here and workforce talent. A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

The 13,000-employee business has a presence in 26 countries but chose to expand here because it’s where the growth made sense, said Hallie Freeman, site director and head of Moog’s space vehicles unit. The facility almost quadruples Moog’s space in the metro area, adding to its Golden location and giving the 60-employee operation room for its planned hiring of 20 more people. Beyond Gravity, a Zurich, Switzerland-based defense and space manufacturer formerly called RUAG, was known in the U.S. for making rocket fairings that protect satellites and being a key supplier to Centennial-based United Launch Alliance. In the past four years, the 1,300-employee company established a Denver-area office and added a dozen employees, including its global vice president of innovation and its global business development head work. It’s trying to hire 60 more people between its Denver and Alabama sites. The opportunities connected to big companies like Lockheed Martin Space, Northrop Grumman, Ball Aerospace, Sierra Space and ULA are growing and drew Beyond Gravity to Denver,
rebranded work of the Colorado Space Coalition. But it’s the space industry’s growth in the past five years that is without precedent, with industry employment expanding 30% and its annual payroll topping $5.2 billion Space Colorado says. The effort to recruit space companies to Colorado has more often become helping companies after they’ve decided Colorado is the place they want to grow, said Vicky Lea, director for the Metro Denver Economic Development Corp. Movement, measurement and monitoring all around the world. The Absolute Arm was designed from the ground up with usability in mind. The goal is to deliver consistent, reliable and accurate results, whatever the experience level of the user.
The Centennial-based rocket company’s Atlas V launch vehicle blasted off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Base in Florida in the early evening carrying the uncrewed Boeing Starliner capsule up the east coast of the U.S. and to the edge of orbit. Last month’s flight came more than two years after a different test-flight version of a Starliner capsule failed to reach the ISS due to software glitches that mistimed its engine firings in orbit. Boeing ultimately brought in a different Starliner capsule and rescheduled the flight to this spring. The flight test is key for NASA and Boeing. The space agency hired Boeing in 2014 to develop the capsule and fly U.S. astronauts to the ISS. The program also contracted SpaceX to use a human-rated version of its Dragon capsule for ISS crew missions. Elon Musk’s space company has flown four crews to the station for NASA — plus the first commercial flight to the station by civilian astronauts — while Starliner has been going through its test flights. The rocket, featuring a special twoengine Centaur upper stage, carried the Starliner on an arching trajectory keeping the forces on the capsule low enough to be protective had there been people on board. Recycling Metals, Conserving Resources, Since 1961 Reshoring Initiative® Data Report: Essential Product Industries Drive Job Announcements to Record High In 2021 the private and federal push for domestic supply of essential goods propelled reshoring and foreign direct investment (FDI) job announcements to a record 261,000, bringing the total jobs announced since 2010 to over 1.3 million. For the second year in a row, reshoring exceeded FDI by 100%, in contrast to 2014 thru 2019 when FDI exceeded reshoring. Additionally, the number of companies reporting reshoring and FDI set a new record of over 1,800 companies. The Data Report discusses the trend and how reshoring will continue to be key to U.S. manufacturing and economic recovery. Jobs Announced, Reshoring + FDI, Cumulative 2010-2021
More Takeaways from the Report The year over year increase is due almost exclusively to companies filling supplying chain gaps of essential products including: electric batteries, semiconductors, PPE, pharmaceuticals, rare earths and renewable energy. The Computer and Electronics industry has seen the largest jump in % of jobs, due to semiconductor/chip investment. Reshoring from Asia is about 10X that from Western Europe. Texas led the other states in jobs announced, followed by Tennessee. Preliminary data indicates a continuing surge of reshoring and FDI in 2022. Reshoring was the key to U.S. manufacturing and economic recovery in 2021. The Biden administration actions to fix key supply chains contributed substantially to the 2021 and forecast 2022 results but are short term fixes.

Quality, Reliability and Service
“PMA’s May Business Conditions Report shows that metalformers continue to experience challenges, mainly due to supply-chain issues,” association president David Klotz said in a news release. “Problems experienced throughout manufacturing in obtaining steel, aluminum and other raw materials, together with the inability to fill job openings, is starting to slow the sector’s recovery as reflected in this report.
We are a full service job shop, providing as much or as little project involvement as required – from tool and die design to finishing and assembly.
PMA has been advocating Congress to include the JOBS and College Transparency Act in the COMPETES Act to help our industry in its efforts to attract the next generation of workers.” By: Rachel Abbey McCafferty

To bridge the perception gap, manufacturers need to overcome the “mismatch between advertising methods.” The younger workforce is receptive to social media, television, and the news for information, so manufacturers need to leverage those platforms to reach their desired audience. Manufacturers must also grapple with two key issues: global competition with retail, service, and technology brands, and competition with local businesses. To combat these threats, “manufacturers may need to offer better wages and benefits and more flexible opportunities,” the report said. However, manufacturing has positioned itself as an attractive option for workers. The industry’s benefits and hourly wages performed better than the retail and service sectors, and the tenure of manufacturing employees is “among the highest when compared to other private-sector industries.” But wages and tenure may not be enough to attract a younger workforce. The survey analysis shows a renewed focus from workers on well-being, flexibility in where/when to work, and a desire for more advanced technology in the workplace.
Report: Changing Workforce Provides Opportunity for Manufacturing
The report recommends a focus on “elevating the workforce experience as well as recasting perceptions of the industry.”
Manufacturing is at an inflection point, with the opportunity to attract a new generation of workers, according to a new report.
For one, manufacturers should promote career growth and learning through upskilling and development programs.
The Deloitte and Manufacturing Institute’s 2022 Competing for Talent: Recasting Perceptions of Manufacturing study provides key insights into educating the public about the benefits of manufacturing and how to attract and retain a post-pandemic workforce.
In addition, increased flexibility in work location and meeting employees’ needs—such as childcare benefits—are critical in attracting and retaining a loyal workforce.
Similar to other studies, the report found those who work in manufacturing—or have friends or family working in the sector—have a better perception than those who do not.
Manufacturers should also put an emphasis on the company’s mission and purpose, and include a strong diversity, equity, and inclusion program.
For example, while only 34% of the general public believe entry-level manufacturing jobs tend to pay more than other industries, 66% of those who work in manufacturing believe that is true.
And nearly half of the survey respondents agreed that “alignment and adaptability of work to the company mission, values, and purpose” are important.
And 32% of the public believe manufacturing jobs are clean and safe, compared to 61% of those familiar with the sector.
The report concluded with a recommendation on how to meet the challenges facing the manufacturing industry: engage, involve, evolve.
“Those unfamiliar with manufacturing have minimal awareness of how modern technology, such as robotics and artificial intelligence, can make jobs safer and allow employees to do more productive work,” the report states. A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Tactics include sponsoring internships, partnering with local high schools, leveraging social media, and engaging more with your community. Involving is the process through which manufacturers can better understand the needs of the current workforce. This process includes programs that connect experienced workers with new employees and specialized roles for retiring employees to share their knowledge. Evolving is the transformation of company policies to attract a new generation of workers. Examples include career development programs, location flexibility, and an enhanced diversity, equity, and inclusion program. “Companies can step up their initiatives,” the report said. “Engage new employees, involving existing employees to retain them, and evolve the work and workplace in response to customer needs.”Source: CBIA
Ogden Boasts Biggest Tech Growth In Utah As The Industry ‘Decentralizes’ The irony of the U.S. tech industry is that even though it’s made it possible to work anywhere, for much of its history jobs have been concentrated in a handful of mostly coastal cities and urban areas. D.C.-based public policy think tank Brookings Institution. It tracked the growth and change of the tech sector, defined as a group of “advanced industries” such as computer equipment manufacturing, software publishing and data processing. Researchers say the changes seem to be driven by the pandemic and rise of remote work. The report found job growth has slowed in some of the biggest tech “superstars” like the Bay Area and Seattle and increased in other midsized and smaller markets, including “smaller quality-of-life meccas and college towns. One of the beneficiaries is Ogden, which had a 7% increase in techrelated jobs between 2019 and 2020, the report found. That’s more than any other region in the state. Do You Have A Passion For Manufacturing?
SOBRsafe crossed the line into revenue in the first quarter of 2022. The company has raised $17.5 million to date in investor validation. SOBRsafe’s Vice President of Communications Justin Davis said the company has capitalized on the recent lack of technological innovation in the sobriety space. Similarly, he said drinking habits developed during the Covid-19 pandemic aren’t easy to break and are being taken back into the workplace, which is where their products step in.

SOBRsafe is increasingly marketing to employers amid the return to offices after alcohol consumption increased during the Covid-19 pandemic. A survey of U.S. adults found that excessive drinking increased by 21% during the Covid-19 lockdowns in 2020.

“Working with Spirit Defense and Space, we will broaden access to tomorrow’s space economy; lowering the cost of entry and increasing the speed to market of Sierra Space’s Dream Chaser franchise. Together we will accelerate the commercialization of space,” Vice said in a statement “We are very excited about the opportunity this partnership with Sierra Space represents,” Spirit CEO Tom Gentile said in a news release. “Spirit AeroSystems brings unparalleled value in terms of design for manufacturability and industrialization to help scale production rates on the Dream Chaser and its derivatives. We look forward to joining Sierra Space on its mission to create exciting breakthroughs that enable existing businesses, entrepreneurs, researchers and governments to empower humanity to enhance life on Earth. We are grateful to Sen. Sierra Space inks partnership to build space vehicles An ambitious Colorado-based space company has inked a deal with Spirit AeroSystems Inc. to help design and build its space vehicles. Wichita, Kansas-based Spirit said the agreement will pair it with Louisville-based Sierra Space to help build its planned Shooting Star cargo module and further develop that company’s planned family of Dream Chaser spaceplanes. Sierra Space spun off last year to become a wholly-owned subsidiary of its parent company, Sierra Nevada Corp., a privately held Sparks, Nevada-based defense and aerospace contractor. Sierra Space's owners, Fatih and Eren Ozmen, are married billionaires who hired CEO Tom Vice last summer from supersonic jet plane startup Aerion after that business lost funding. Spirit had been in line for work with Aerion prior to that business folding. A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

The Sierra Space Dream Chaser is expected to launch on missions for the first time early next year. Sierra Space secured $1.4 billion in capital in 2021 to mark the largest Series A capital raise of last year and the second-largest private capital raise in history. Space work has been a growing priority for Spirit, so much so that it rolled those programs into those for its military customers last year to form Spirit Defense & Space. The company expects that to be a $1 billion business unit by the middle of the decade. By Daniel McCoy – Reporter, Wichita Business Journal
Maxar Technologies’ Satellite Images Help Clear Fog Of War In Ukraine The gutting image of a bombed-out theater in the besieged city of Mariupol, Ukraine, tells a story. So too does the image from a few days earlier that shows the words “children” spelled out in large letters on the theater grounds in the hope that people sheltered there

would not be targeted. The pictures, taken by a Colorado company’s satellite nearly 380 miles away in orbit, told of devastation from the bombing of the civilian building at the height of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in early March. The theater bombing was just one moment in an invasion that has led news cycles for more than three months, making Maxar Technologies a regular name in the news or as a logo watermark frequently appearing in news story images. Maxar has taken pictures of Earth from space and sold them for more than 20 years, but there’s never been a point at which its images have played such a sustained role in shaping so many people’s understanding. The U.S. commercial satellite industry — Maxar and smaller competitors, such as Planet — has made public, in nearly real time, detailed information about troop locations, battle damage, potential mass graves and other features that a generation ago likely would’ve been known only to military and intelligence officials. The company has been cited by name in 54,000 news report s about Ukraine since Jan. 1, Maxar officials said, usually with accompanying satellite images.

Maxar’s involvement in the biggest global news event of the year started as far back as November, when its imagery revealed troop movements in western Russia and in Belarus. U.S. diplomats spoke with unusual transparency about intelligence that portended the Russian army tanks rolling into Ukraine. When Russian troops withdrew from suburbs surrounding the Ukrainian capital, a complex analysis by The New York Times used satellite imagery and geolocation data from Maxar to match video footage from the ground. The newspaper reported, in detail, locations of civilian bodies that could be seen in the streets from space, confirming the killings happened while Russian soldiers still controlled the area and suggesting they had a role in the atrocities. Such detailed public use of commercial satellite imagery to bear witness like this has been unprecedented, both in its sophistication and its scope. Colorado Electric Vehicle Maker Partners To Offer Autonomous Passenger Vans A Colorado manufacturer of electric shuttles and trucks is partnering with another company to sell selfdriving shuttle vans capable of ferrying passengers around corporate campuses.Lightning eMotors, based in Loveland, has teamed with Crozet, Virginia-based Perrone Robotics to offer autonomous, electric shuttles for use on defined routes where traffic is controlled. Perrone Robotics has been developing its system of sensors and software for years and has several shuttles being used in pilot programs by clients. Commercial deployment of vehicles is expected at some campuses this year, and well over 80% of customers in discussion for autonomous shuttles request they also be electric. Lightning eMotors initially expects to sell the vehicles for use in environments with dedicated routes, such as colleges or large corporate campuses, or in scenarios in which autonomous A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

technology serves as high-end visual and safety features for human drivers of commercial vehicles. Lightning eMotors makes electric cargo and delivery vans, shuttles and utility vehicles. It retrofits vehicles built on automakers’ standard chassis to have electric drivetrains and other features instead of gas-burning combustion engines. The company has orders for thousands of fleet vehicles from companies. Lightning eMotors’ scale and experience converting shuttles to electric made it a natural partner for Perrone Robotics’ autonomous vehicle systems. Perrone Robotics adds laser and radar sensors, video cameras and computer systems to a vehicle, making it possible for the vehicle to drive itself and avoid obstacles on a defined route. The companies have made their first sale of electric autonomous shuttles to PIDC, a public-private economic development corporation in Philadelphia, for the 1,200-acre Philadelphia Navy Yard campus it manages. Perrone Systems will sell many of its vehicles recommending a person be present in the vehicle for such circumstances. The company grew from employing a few dozen to a staff of more than 220 people now. It’s hiring steadily and is currently producing electric vehicles for clients at a rate of about 2,500 annually. That rate is climbing as Lightning eMotors expands its production capacity in Loveland, said Nick Bettis, the company’s director of marketing and sales. Whose Lane Are You In? Wes Michie; Skydandee ; NUNTMA President Supply chain issues continue to plague our businesses and cause frustration in our lives. These challenges can cause tension and stress that is felt by every employee within our shops. These issues have caused me to reflect on the relationships of things that are beyond my control vs. things I can control. While riding in the car with others, I’ve heard many people say,” Stay in your own lane!”. And, certainly, I’ve said it more than once myself.
THE NORTHERN UTAH CHAPTER OF THE NATIONAL TOOLING & MACHINING ASSOCIATION Established in 2010, the NUNTMA is a gathering place for machine shops in Northern Utah.

REGISTRATION REQUIRED FOR ALL EVENTS. VISIT: NUNTMA.ORG/UPCOMING-EVENTS This statement is often said with strong feelings, and frustration of another driver that is paying little attention to the lines painted on the road. Causing you some panic or annoyance that they could, or would, be so inconsiderate. These same things happen in our work lives. Even in small organizations, individuals have different roles and responsibilities. And for good reason. Some jobs and tasks have specific instructions that must be followed with precision. Others, there is room for flexibility and have more than 1 right way to complete the job. Any time there is more than one person working, lanes of travel, whether figurative or not, exist. And at some point, or another we will be one of those drivers and cross into the lane of another. I’m certain, all of us have sat in both seats. So, we know what both sides feel like. No matter your role, it is imperative that when you see something that could be improved, you should speak up. Share that thought or opinion. But remember, sometimes that opinion really is just that, an opinion.
The lines painted on the road to help you to your destination. Your car can easily cross them, however there is an appropriate time to do so, usually indicated by breaks between the lines. And I think most appreciate it when you go to the extra effort and use the signal, just to let them know that you are coming over. In life, these lines are not always drawn in yellow our white paint. Learning how to see them takes practice and active reflection to see them clearly. I’ll provide a few ideas on how this can be exercised: • •
• • •
Focus on YOUR responsibilities When you see a problem in a lane other than your own, determine whose lane that is. Often, understanding just that one thing, changes the way you would approach it entirely. And, sometimes, keeps you from doing anything at all. When you need to cross lanes, be kind The next time you reach outside of your lane, take a few minutes to reflect on how you went about it. Adjust where necessary. When someone crosses into your lane, be kind. Whether they crossed into yours on purpose, or not, kindness will benefit all parties.
Great leaders work hard on their OWN problems. And they allow others solve and work through theirs. Often that does include providing advice, sharing past experiences and solutions. Correcting the course of another from time to time does come with territory. Great leaders do it with kindness and tact. They know when to STAY IN THEIR OWN LANE and use a signal when it’s time to cross into another lane. A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

He noted that quantity-wise, most manufacturing takes place in Salt Lake County, but areas like Cache County have manufacturing comprising as much as 30% of the local employment base. Fortunately, the industry and its various subsectors have been able to maintain their economic vitality even during the worst of the COVID-19 downturn. “Utah has really just been bucking the national trend for a long time. You got that slow, that long steady decline largely across the nation, but not here,” he said. “It can grow around 2% per year. Obviously, we didn’t do that last year (because) COVID knocked everybody off track a bit. By December, (the industry) had come back to job growth on a year-over basis. It’s in pretty good shape.” Among the organizations tasked with providing guidance to the state’s manufacturing industry is the University of Utah Manufacturing Extension Partnership Center — the statewide help center funded by the U.S. Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology Manufacturing Extension Partnership. The local center acts as a consulting company to advise manufacturers across the state how to improve their productivity, explained U. center director Steve Black. “In our local economy, the predominance — 80% — of the manufacturers have less than 20 employees so our goal is specifically to work with small and medium-sized manufacturers, anyone 500 or below,” he said. “Utah is a prime spot for the (Manufacturing Extension Partnership) and for an opportunity to make a difference.”He said since 2016, the program has helped that state grow its manufacturing base and attracted companies from other states to consider relocating to the Beehive State.
“We’re actually seeing an influx of manufacturing into Utah. Originally when the MEP grant came to the university, it was estimated we had about 3,200 manufacturers, Black said. “As our outreach has continued, that number has gone up significantly (to approximately 4,300) and a lot of the companies have moved from California or from other states to Utah because of the favorable conditions that we have here — both politically and economically, and the educated workforce.” For Kirk Gates — director of Continuous Improvement at Complex Fabricators, a Utah-based machining and fabrication company — the pandemic had a major impact on the business as orders for services dropped off significantly as the outbreak took hold in Utah and nationwide. The economy has bounced back rather quickly. We’re looking to hire a few skilled folks, even not so skilled, and we’re already having trouble finding them,” he said. “We need welders, we don’t have welders, and we’ve been trying to find that skill set and we — I’m sure, along with others — are having that same issue.” He said once the pandemic restrictions subside, the company hopes to hire more people as production ramps up.“We are optimistic, for sure,” Gates said. “We’re seeing an uptick in requests for quotes and we’re trying to compete for (contracts).” By Jasen Lee, Deseret News A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

In fact, the aluminum cups are helping to drive sustainability at sports and entertainment venues across the country, including at Ball Arena in Denver, SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, and Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle. At Ball Arena, in particular, aluminum beverage packaging has helped to eliminate more than 350,000 single-use plastic cups and bottles, and the arena is on pace to eliminate more than 1 million single-use plastic cups and bottles in 2022. Infinitely recyclable and economically valuable, aluminum is the most sustainable beverage packaging material, and, like aluminum cans, aluminum cups can be easily recycled. In fact, 75 percent of the aluminum ever produced is still in use today and aluminum cans, cups and bottles can be recycled and back on a store shelf in as little as 60 days. In addition to its sustainability and recycling strengths, the aluminum cup is lightweight, sturdy, cool to the touch and provides an elevated drinking experience.
Urge Congress to Support Workforce in Competition Bill Members of the House and Senate are still working to assemble a final version of legislation to incentivize manufacturing in America and counter China’s technological rise. One Voice is continuing to urge lawmakers to include in the final bill the JOBS Act to allow Pell Grants for short-term training, provisions to inform students about the costs of student debt, and additional resources for apprenticeships. Please help this effort by sending a letter to your Senator or Representative calling on negotiators to include the JOBS Act to expand Pell Grants for short-term training and the College Transparency Act to inform borrowers about student debt and career opportunities.
