Are you looking at your workforce options from every angle? Manufacturers across the country face serious workforce shortages. How can you beat out your competition in winning and retaining employees? The Pandemic changed that way and the place where many workers did their jobs. And for those positions that could work at home, results were by all means very positive. Research shows that businesses lose $600 billion a year to workplace distractions and that remote workers are 35% to 40% more productive. In a recent FlexJobs survey, 65 % wanted to work remotely full time, while another 31% wanted hybrid. And ¼ of the survey participants said they would be willing to take a pay cut in order to work remotely. Sure, remote work is good for the employees and for the environment, but the reality is that many who work in manufacturing, particularly in the factory or machine shop floor, simply cannot do their jobs without coming to work. There are still opportunities to attract and retain more employees than you would otherwise simply by creating a flexible work environment. In the FlexJobs survey, 81% of workers say they would be more loyal to their employer if it offered flexible work options. How can this work in a manufacturing environment? • Flexible benefits – Older workers who are on Medicare and younger workers who are on their spouse’s medical plan may opt for their ‘medical dollars’ going elsewhere. Some may opt for additional vacation time while others may choose the $ be added to their paycheck. Your company is paying for medical benefits anyway, why not reallocate the dollars to where employees want them? • Other types of compensation – in many parts of the US, home prices are skyrocketing, and rentals are in short supply. Any type of housing assistance will be appealing to prospective employees moving from other areas. • Flexible Hours – There is really no downside to helping employees with childcare needs with a flexible start or end time. If you don’t offer this, those who need start or end time flexibility will simply not come to work at your company if they can find this option elsewhere. • Job sharing – I cannot emphasize this option enough. Take, for example, an older experienced worker who does not want to fully retire but wants to reduce his or her hours. Couple this individual with a worker who has young children and wants to spend more time with them, while still working. Not only can this arrangement work immediately with job sharing, but you will likely retain the young worker once they want to come back to the position full time. Harvard Business School ‘s Ashley Whillans analyzed more than 42,000 employee responses in a Glassdoor survey, and found that benefits like parental leaves and flex time had more of an effect on job satisfaction than even tens of thousands of dollars in additional salary.“Time is one of our most valuable resources that we often squander -- we often don’t think it’s as important as it is,” she said.

In summary, Glassdoor says nearly 3 in 5 people say benefits and perks are a top priority when it comes to accepting a job. And, as we already know, happy employees are more productive and willing to stay at the company long term. If your organization is struggling to attract and retain top talent, it’s time to reevaluate your employee benefits. Until next issue, God bless our troops and our Front liners.

The White House confirmed receipt of the letter spearheaded by One Voice and sources indicate the administration is making incremental progress in talks with our allies on the Section 232 National Security 25% tariffs on steel and 10% tariffs on aluminum imports. One Voice members and manufacturers across the country report continued delays and record pricing as the domestic metals shortage continues. One Voice is working with the administration, partners on Capitol Hill, and others in industry to address China overcapacity in the metals markets while bringing relief from businesses manufacturing in America who are the ones paying the price of a restricted market, tariffs, and delays.

Equipment Finance Industry Confidence Remains Near Historic Highs The Equipment Leasing & Finance Foundation (the Foundation) releases the May 2021 Monthly Confidence Index for the Equipment Finance Industry (MCI-EFI). The index reports a qualitative assessment of both the prevailing business conditions and expectations for the future as reported by key executives from the $900 billion equipment finance sector. Overall, confidence in the equipment finance market is 72.1, easing from April’s all-time high of 76.1. When asked about the outlook for the future, MCI-EFI survey respondent Bruce J. Winter, President, FSG Capital, Inc., said, “While vaccine ‘herd immunity’ may be unachievable, warmer weather, immunity provided by previous infections and over 105 million Americans fully vaccinated will allow most economic activity to resume at pre-pandemic levels this summer. Throughout history, when confidence increases, consumers and businesses are more apt to acquire more consumer goods, equipment, and durables, and invest at prevailing prices. When confidence decreases, spending and risk-taking tend to fall. Investors are said to be confident when the news about the future is good and stock prices are rising. Who participates in the MCI-EFI? The respondents are comprised of a wide cross-section of industry executives, including large-ticket, middlemarket and small-ticket banks, independents and captive equipment finance companies. The MCI-EFI uses the same pool of 50 organization leaders to respond monthly to ensure the survey’s integrity. Aerospace Company Aims To Build Its ‘Mega Factory’ On The Edge Of Downtown A growing space startup plans to build what it calls a “mega factory” on the edge of downtown Denver where it can build dozens of satellites at a time. York Space Systems, a 5-year-old company based at Metro State University south of downtown, has unveiled a project to quadruple its current satellite-building capacity with a new facility near campus. “Our next generation mega-center ensures our ability to deliver our proven solutions at a rate and scale that is unprecedented in the space industry,” said Dirk Wallinger, CEO of York, in an expansion announcement. The company, formed in 2016, launched its first satellite in 2019, one it built in 2019 for the U.S. Army. York has grown steadily since then. The company has deemed its new factory “mega” for its production capacity, but the facility’s size is more ordinary, and its location — in a sea of parking lots south of Ball Arena across Auraria Parkway from the MSU campus — provides plenty of room.

York Space Systems, a satellite manufacturer, has its operations center housed on the Metropolitan State University of Denver campus. The company leased space in the building in April 2020, and the next month it announced a major expansion of its manufacturing capacity. Now, a year later, the company aims to boost its production capacity again with a project to turn the site into a 115,000-square-foot satellite production hub. York’s current lease covers the existing building at 501 Wazee St. The expansion calls for construction of a three-story building on an adjacent, 1.15-acre parcel to the east, at 551 Wazee St., according to a concept plan submitted to the city. York Space System’s new “mega facility” will deliver spacecraft at four times the scale previously possible. That building would feature 95,325 square feet above ground, with the first floor primarily for York’s satellite integration and production, a second floor for spacecraft sub-system assembly and a third floor of offices for engineering. A below-ground level would have about 72 spaces of

ULA Launches Latest Missile-Detection Satellite For The Space Force A United Launch Alliance rocket carried a Colorado-born missile-detection satellite for the U.S. military into orbit Tuesday, completing the company’s second launch of 2021. Centennial-based ULA’s Atlas V launch vehicle blasted off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida at 11:37 a.m. MT with the U.S. Space Force’s newest Space-based Infrared System (SBIRS) geostationary satellite. The rocket’s upper stage released the spacecraft after a two-hour flight to an orbit 19,300 miles above the earth. GEO-6 satellite, which it — and its team including Northrop Grumman, the Aerospace Corporation and other contractors — is scheduled to deliver for launch in 2022. ULA launched the first SBIRS GEO satellite on May 7, 2011. The military calls the system “the tip of the spear for global missile warning.” The military’s ground control and data processing for the SBIRS system is handled at Buckley and Schreiver Air Force bases in Aurora and Colorado Springs, respectively. Last month’s launch by ULA also released a pair of small cubesats, called the Technology Demonstration Orbiters, that were sponsored by the U.S. Air Force Academy, which is outside Colorado Springs. ULA’s next launch is scheduled to take off from Cape Canaveral on June 23, launching the Space Test Program-3 mission for the U.S. Space Force’s Space and Missile Systems Center. ULA is a joint venture of Boeing Co. and Lockheed Martin Corp. ULA employs about 2,500 people, about half of them locally at its headquarters in the southern metro area. It’s the highest-profile Colorado example of the wave of “special purpose acquisition company” deals, or SPACs, making dozens of growing, private companies publicly traded. GigCapital 3 shares have been listed under the symbol “GIK” for months. Its acquisition of Lightning eMotors, in the works since December, closed last month. The shares switched a few days later to the ZEV ticker, a nod to “zero emissions vehicle.” Reeser’s makes what it calls electric “vocational” vehicles, including specialty delivery trucks, ambulances, buses, bucket trucks, tow trucks and similar medium-duty automobiles. Unlike a traditional IPO, Lightning eMotors faced no mystery about how much funding it would collect. The SPAC acquisition generated $268 million in proceeds. It also enlisted BP Technology Ventures, the startup investment arm of London-based energy giant BP plc. (NYSE: BP), and other unidentified institutional investors as backers of Reeser’s company. Unlike passenger vehicle production, which makes models of identical vehicles by the hundreds of thousands, Lightning eMotors manufactures its electric fleet vehicles in smaller numbers, with most buyers requiring customization. Lightning eMotors estimates it could serve a $67 billion market niche. GigCapital3 is among multiple SPAC entities started by parent company GigCapital Global, which formed in 2017 as a “private-to-public equity” firm. NASA wants Artemis missions to reach the rugged south pole region of the moon. The Lockheed and GM partnership will design a vehicle capable of that journey and to help deliver science payloads, the companies said.

Sierra Space’s space station project is based on the company’s inflatable space habitat, which it calls LIFE, that expands in orbit to have a 300-cubic-meter interior. The habitat is modular and can be connected to others to create larger spaces for an orbiting space station.

Colorado Company Inks Agreement For Manufacturing At Its Private Space Station A Colorado aerospace company planning to build a private space station has s i gn e d a n agreement with another growing company covering manufacturing in orbit. Louisville-based Sierra Space signed a memorandum of understanding with Jacksonville, Florida-based Redwire that envisions using Sierra Space’s planned commercial space station for inspace services and possible manufacturing.

NASA has called for commercial space stations to fill the void left by the International Space Station’s expected retirement around 2030. Sierra Space revealed that it intends to have at least one of its three-story, 27-foot-diameter inflatable habitats in low-earth orbit and have a space station operating by as soon as 2028.The company was formerly known as Sierra Nevada Corp. The station will feature docking ports for the company’s Dream Chaser self-flying space plane it’s developing to carry cargo to the International Space Station on missions starting next year. A version of Dream Chaser in development will be able to fly with astronauts on board. The company, a subsidiary of Sierra Nevada Corp., a privately held aerospace and defense contractor, says it has multiple agreements about the potential use of space station workspace for research, development and manufacturing. Sierra space is also willing to arrange to have other companies’ modules dock at the Sierra Space station and use its power, communications, environmental controls and transportation. There’s a lot of interest in such arrangements now. “The companies and countries that master microgravity R&D and manufacturing will be the economic leaders of tomorrow,” said Redwire’s Mike Gold, who last month left a NASA associate administrator’s position to become the company’s executive vice president of civil space business development and external affairs. “By utilizing expandable habitat technology Sierra Space is offering a robust capability that will bolster and accelerate the substantial technological benefits of in-space manufacturing that Redwire Space is leading.” Redwire formed last year with backing from AE Industrial Partners, a private equity firm, with a strategy of acquiring complementary space businesses that could benefit from being part of a larger organization able to attract work the businesses wouldn’t have been able to alone. It bought three growing Denver-area space businesses, Deep Space Systems, which makes devices and gadgets used in space missions; Roccor, which makes solar arrays and antennas for spacecraft; and Oakman Aerospace, a digital design company specializing in space systems.

In Push For Sustainability, Denver Startup Designs An All-Electric Motorcycle As automobile companies around the world look to electrify their fleets, a Colorado startup is taking on the challenging task of building an all-electric, high-powered motorcycle. The idea struck Anthony Cross nearly two years ago as he sought to get back into riding motorcycles. As an avid rider in the past, he wanted to pick the hobby back up, but wanted to do it on an electric bike. As he scoured the market, he was unimpressed by the offerings. Bikes were either underpowered, lacked long-range batteries or came in at a price outside of his budget. “A lot of them are embellished mopeds, a little underpowered but being sold as motorcycles,” he said.

“If you do get an electric motorcycle that fulfills all that criteria, it’s exorbitantly expensive, which is the problem we’re trying to solve,” he said.

Additionally, satellite mass production could reduce costs to $500K, the Morgan Stanley report suggests. “Before such US entrepreneurs as Elon Musk (SpaceX), Jeff Bezos (Blue Origin) and Richard Branson (Virgin Galactic), space exploration was almost completely driven by the government and a handful of Fortune 100 traditional aerospace companies, including Boeing, Northrup Grumman and Lockheed Martin”, says Dan Schatzman, CEO of Jaguar Precision Machine (JPM). He continued, “One of the fastest growing industries in the world is the space industry. It is an immense universe and there is plenty of room for all of us. We simply cannot fail in this race!” New Mexico has a rich history in the space industry. Robert Goddard, inventor of the liquid fuel rocket, early on recognized its suitability for space research. What made the state particularly well suited for rocket launches were its large expanse of flat open space, little vegetation to catch on fire, few people to be frightened or injured, good weather throughout the year, power availability, access to rail and air transportation, and higher elevation for fuel conservation. In 1930, Goddard moved to Roswell, NM and his first rocket launch that year reached an astounding altitude of 2000 feet and a speed of 500 miles an hour. A decade later he launched the first manmade vehicle to travel faster than the speed of sound and sent a rock to an altitude of nearly 9000 feet. For the same reasons Goddard selected New Mexico for its test site, in 1945 the US Army established the first atmosphere testing rocket

Today, New Mexico has three key Space Force organizations that work in space operating at Kirtland Air Force Base (KAFB): The Space Rapid Capabilities Office (Space RCO), the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), and Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC). The state also boasts two Department of Energy National Laboratories: Sandia National Laboratory and Los Alamos National Laboratory.

The US government has made significant investments in space through NASA, and with NASA increasingly relying on private companies for goods and services, it means very good things for spacefocused companies. Today there are more than 200 manufacturers in Aerospace in the Space Valley (from Brownsville, Texas to Denver, Colorado), making parts for space. Spaceport America is right in the center of the Space Valley.

The FAA designated a number of ‘Spaceports’ throughout the US, all with a runway for horizontal take-offs and landings. New Mexico has its own Spaceport, called ‘Spaceport America’. It is located on 18,000 acres in Sierra County near Elephant Butte Lake. Spaceport America, owned and operated by the state, is the world’s first ‘purpose-built’ commercial spaceport designed and constructed specifically for commercial users. While the first rocket to launch from Spaceport America took place 15 years ago, today it has seen more than 300 launches. Its tenants include Virgin Galactic, SpinLaunch, AeroVironment’s UAV project HAPSMobile, and UP Aerospace. Its customers include Boeing, Swift Engineering, C6 Launch Systems, ABL and WSRD, LLC. The facility is frequently used for STEM education projects for students of all ages. In February 2020 Virgin Galactic’s WhiteKnightTwo, a custom-built, four-engine, dual-fuselage jet aircraft, designed to carry SpaceShipTwo (an air-launched suborbital spaceplane type designed for space tourism) up to an altitude of ~50,000 feet) moved to Spaceport America, and months later, Virgin Galactic carried out its 1st and 2nd successful glide flight of its spaceship. Virgin Galactic held its first successful human spaceflight from Spaceport America in May 2021. Also last year, Aerovironment’s HAPSMobile, a joint venture with Japan’s SoftBank Corp., announced that it has chosen Spaceport America for test operations and development of a specialized communications platform.

SPACE Valley

There are many places an individual can invest in space today. For example, there are ETFs like UFO, ARKX, and individual stocks such as Virgin Galactic (SPCE) available on the stock market exchanges. In addition, people can invest privately in things like the Space Fund, which is rapidly becoming the world’s leading space venture capital company. Its team started the LaunchPad fund in 2019 as a proof of concept to demonstrate its ability to find, navigate, and capitalize on deal flow that may be elusive to those outside of the insular next generation space community. “We balance our excitement about what is and will be happening in space with a deep and thorough vetting process,” said SpaceFund managing partner and co-founder Meagan Crawford. “We don’t chase rockets, satellite swarms, or shiny objects. Instead, we find brilliant teams with game changing technologies and solid business plans. While some of them may not seem glamorous, they are the foundational elements of a rapidly rising space economy.” Casey shares Dan’s enthusiasm for the market potential for space in the state. She says, “There are a variety of in-state space companies that range in size from large prime contractors to innovative high–tech startups some of which have started via government contracts. New companies are starting in our state with private investment. New Mexico has over 140 companies working in the space industry. Virgin Galactic, the anchor tenant of Spaceport America, is gearing up to take tourists to space. Virgin Galactic has over 600 space enthusiasts signed up for its flights, at a cost of $250,000 per person.”

Equipment Leasing and Finance Association’s Survey of Economic Activity

Monthly Confidence Index (MCI-EFI) in May is 72.1, easing from April’s all-time high of 76.1, but still at historic high levels.

The Equipment Leasing and Finance Association’s (ELFA) Monthly Leasing and Finance Index (MLFI-25), which reports economic activity from 25 companies representing a cross section of the $900 billion equipment finance sector, showed their overall new business volume for April was $9.8 billion, up 19 percent year-over-year from new business volume in April 2020. Volume was up 5 percent month-to-month from $9.3 billion in March. Year-to-date, cumulative new business volume was up 4 percent compared to 2020.

ELFA President and CEO Ralph Petta said, “Respondents showed robust April business activity, attesting to a strengthening economy. Despite soft labor market data for the month, an increasing number of businesses are opening up, as more Americans are receiving a vaccination, traveling and otherwise trying to return to some semblance of normalcy. Portfolio quality also shows resilience as lease and loan contract modifications requested by many customers appear to be in the rear-view mirror. The economy and business activity still have a ways to go to return to pre-pandemic levels, but what we see so far in terms of capital equipment investment is indeed encouraging as we head into the summer months.”

Receivables over 30 days were 1.8 percent, down from 1.9 percent the previous month and down from 3.0 percent in the same period in 2020. Charge-offs were 0.30 percent, down from 0.43 percent the previous month and down from 0.80 percent in the year-earlier period. Credit approvals totaled 76.3 percent, down from 77.0 percent in March. Total headcount for equipment finance companies was down 15.4 percent year-over-year, a decrease due to significant downsizing at an MLFI reporting company. The global pandemic affected all businesses throughout the state, either through significant growth or, contrarily, through steep revenue declines, according to a news release. In response, state and federal agencies provided much-needed funding to those impacted or through agencies charged with delivering targeted aid to local businesses. “Utah’s manufacturers are positioned to have more favorable economic outcomes than originally forecast in November 2020,” said Tulinda Larsen, executive director of the Utah Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Initiative. “Utah’s economic performance, combined with mostly positive economic activity and improvements in logistics over the same period nationwide, places Utah’s manufacturers in good position for further recovery and growth over the forecast period to 2025.” A state economic analyst echoed those sentiments, stating the Beehive State’s manufacturing industry has indeed fared well during the upheaval caused by the pandemic.

Utah Manufacturing Holding Strong Despite Pandemic Impacts The state’s manufacturing sector is among the strongest economically, a recent report says, even with the turmoil wrought by the coronavirus outbreak. “During the COVID-19 pandemic, manufacturing has been a significant contributor to the lifeblood of Utah’s economy,” said Stephen Reed, director of Utah State University’s Utah Manufacturing Extension Service. “While we have seen a decline in some of Utah’s manufacture segments, others, like those associated with the outdoor recreation industry have experienced significant increases in production demand.” The Utah Industry Resource Alliance released the latest information from an in-depth economic study on the impacts of the pandemic-induced recession on the state’s manufacturing industry. The alliance, a nonprofit organization supporting economic development for Utah manufacturers and rural businesses, announced last week its 2020 Economic Impact Report detailing the impact of the industry on the state’s A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

“Right out of the gate, there were probably some slowdowns, but while (the industry) had some job losses, it wasn’t real deep. In fact, by December that industry was back to job growth,” explained Mark Knold, chief economist for the Utah Department of Workforce Services. “Their setbacks might have been about 2% during some of the deeper parts of COVID, but that’s pretty much nothing compared to some other industries.” He noted that quantity-wise, most manufacturing takes place in Salt Lake County, but areas like Cache County have manufacturing comprising as much as 30% of the local employment base. Fortunately, the industry and its various subsectors have been able to maintain their economic vitality even during the worst of the COVID-19 downturn. “Utah has really just been bucking the national trend for a long time. You got that slow, that long steady decline largely across the nation, but not here,” he said. “It can grow around 2% per year. Obviously, we didn’t do that last year (because) COVID knocked everybody off track a bit. By December, (the industry) had come back to job growth on a year-over basis. “In our local economy, the predominance — 80% — of the manufacturers have less than 20 employees so our goal is specifically to work with small and medium-sized manufacturers, anyone 500 or below,” he said. “Utah is a prime spot for the (Manufacturing Extension Partnership) and for an opportunity to make a difference.” He said since 2016, the program has helped that state grow its manufacturing base and attracted companies from other states to consider relocating to the Beehive State. “We’re actually seeing an influx of manufacturing into Utah. Originally when the MEP grant came to the university, it was estimated we had about 3,200 manufacturers, Black said. “As our outreach has continued, that number has gone up significantly (to approximately 4,300) and a lot of the companies have moved from California or from other states to Utah because of the favorable conditions that we have here — both politically and economically, and the educated workforce.” For Kirk Gates — director of Continuous Improvement at Complex Fabricators, a Utah-based machining and fabrication

company — the pandemic had a major impact the 4/6/2020 on 2:04:17 PM business as orders for services dropped off significantly as the outbreak took hold in Utah and nationwide. “We don’t have as much revenue as we used to,” he said. “We had to really scramble over this last year to try to replace as much of that as we could, which has been a challenge for sure.” He said over time, however, the company has been able to restore most of its business production as the economy began to rebound. “The economy has bounced back rather quickly. Raytheon lands $234M contract for GPS satellite system work in Aurora Raytheon Intelligence and Space won $234 million in work from the U.S. Air Force to update the ground control system for future GPS satellites, a project the company does in Aurora. The military’s Space and Missile Systems Center contracted Raytheon Technologies Corp. for the project to update the Next-Generation Operational Ground Control System, a software and technology system that Raytheon spent years building to fly the fleet of new global positioning system satellites, known as GPS III, and process their data. Raytheon Intelligence and Space has worked on the NextGeneration Operational Ground Control System since 2010, a project that has cost an estimated $3.7 billion. The Raytheon Intelligence and Space office in Aurora has grown to employ more than 2,500 employees. Raytheon’s project fell five years behind schedule and grew infamously over budget — enough to trigger federal cost-overrun limits in the Nunn-McCurdy Act — before the company turned the project around in 2017 by changing project management and adopting agile software development techniques. Raytheon’s software development changes became a leading example of agile software development among U.S space contractors. The latest GPS III ground control contract is to update the ground system to incorporate new capabilities of a future batch of GPS orbiters, known as the GPS IIIF satellites. The GPS III system is gradually replacing the Air Force’s existing GPS satellite fleet, updating the signal strength and improving encryption and anti-jamming of its signals. The first GPS III satellite launched in 2018. The fourth launched in November, and new orbiters are scheduled to be added regularly for years. The system is used for warfighter navigation and to guide missiles. Its unencrypted timing signals also provide geo-location data used by billions of civilian devices, from car navigation to smartphones. As part of the recent NUNTMA Emerging Leaders Conference, we had a lively discussion about the reasons behind why we’re in the machining trade. My guess is that there are multiple reasons that you’re in this trade and if you’re honest about

them they really don’t have all that much to do with your paycheck, though we all need those. As an industry, we make medical parts that help people’s lives to be better and sometimes save their lives. We make things that help cars and trucks move up and down the road. We make things that make ATV’s and snowmobiles work. We make the parts that let airplanes fly and on those planes, people fly to an endless number of significant events for them or maybe just on a business trip or a much-needed vacation. One that hits close for me personally is the things we make to be used in the defense of this great country we live in. My son is currently an active duty infantry US Marine. Please make those defense parts correctly! I’ll never forget standing in a lobby in Saco, Maine, and reading a letter from a very grateful soldier that told about how his life was saved because his M-16 continued to work even after he kept putting the red hot barrel in the water of the rice patty he was pinned down in under fire in Vietnam. The plant that made his gun was full of mills and lathes and machinists just like those in your shops. However much I love metal and parts my absolute favorite thing we build is people. This industry allows so many people to use their creativity, hard work, and pure grit to make the world a better place for them, their families, employees, customers, vendors and so many other people that it’s hard to reach the end of the list. Putting it simply manufacturing creates wealth. We take materials and turn them into something that allows all kinds of things to work. In the process of creating those parts and that wealth, we build people. In the process of managing that wealth, we build people. So while it’s all about milling machines and cool parts it’s really about people. Some of the best most honest hardworking salt of the earth people that I could even imagine. In the manufacturing industry, particularly in small job shops, you often see companies that run their businesses today much like how they ran it a decade ago. If they make good parts and deliver them on-time, likely they are still in business…and that is good enough for them. And whether they like it or not, their business has most certainly plateaued. For other manufacturing businesses, status quo is not acceptable. This other‘breed’of manufacturing companies also makes good parts and delivers them on time. But these are companies who aren’t about ‘doing business as usual’; they are consistently investing in and bettering their company. Manufacturing Technologies Inc. (MTI) epitomizes the 2nd type of manufacturing entity. The company, based in Bernalillo, a town a short distance from Albuquerque, New Mexico, provides excellent quality parts to their customers (with a 96% rating) and has an exceptional customer satisfaction rating (99%).

MTI has long been a family business, with Chuck and wife Elaina integral to its daily operations. Their son Lucas was raised in the business (coming to work to help from the time he was 6) and joined full time as soon as he graduated from high school. Lucas says, “Chuck was always a very good business owner and mentor to me. Chuck learned machining in a time when manual machines were the norm, and with a superior understanding of machining, I learned from the best.” Chuck and Elaina are lucky. Often a machine shop is started up with a superior machinist. When he grows the business, he hopes to pass it on to one of his offspring, and often finds no family member is interested or capable of pursuing it. Lucas says from a young age, this is what he always wanted to do. He says, “I had an advantage that not many others get.” It is fair to say Lucas spent his first 5 full time years learning the business inside and out. It is also a fact that Lucas learned some very difficult lessons in his early years at the company. You see Lucas joined the company at 18, 12 years ago. That happened to coincide with the worst recent recession prior to our pandemic. During his early years with the company, he saw Chuck and Elaina make some very difficult decisions to keep the business open, and this meant laying off staff. Clearly these early years had an impact on Lucas, who has since spent sleepless nights worrying about key financial decisions and how they could affect the business. “I know how it feels when you are running a business, and some of the decisions you make will be ‘make it or break it’,” Lucas says. Lucas is a highly trained machinist, and today you will regularly see him on the floor running a machine or programming a job. But ~5 years ago, in 2017, the owners made the decision to take the business to the next level. They moved to the state-of-the-art facility they reside in today, and the facility at 23,000 sq. ft. is 5 times the size of their previous facility. Lucas says that they have tripled the number of machines they own since moving into their current facility.

something they must embrace to continue to service their customers and grow the business. The company’s first 5 axis machine was the Haas UMC-750SS, a 5-axis vertical machining center. Lucas learned how to run the 5-axis machining center first, so that he could comfortably help others in the company to learn how to use it. Since then, the company has added a second Haas UMC-750SS, which Lucas says the company utilizes for 3+2 machining plus simultaneous 5-axis machining. They also own 2 Haas DM-2 compact high-speed machining centers, and 1 with the TRT100, which is a dual-axis tilting rotary table that offers high-speed, accurate performance for 5-axis machining. Lucas says, “With our 5 axis machining centers, we can be so much more competitive than shops that don’t have these capabilities – not only can we make the parts faster and less expensively with our savings on set-up times, but we can make parts so much more accurately.” MTI also added horizontal machining with the addition of their Haas EC400 Horizontal machining center. “We added the pallet pool for production and lights out capabilities”, Lucas says. He adds, “We know skilled labor is getting more and more difficult to find, and so our machine tool purchases are always made with automation in mind.” Danny White, Sales Engineer for MMT Productivity, supports the MTI team with most of their machining purchases. Danny says, “Lucas and the machinists at MTI make some very intricate parts. To make these exceptional parts, they often push the envelope with technology; it’s not just the machines they purchase, they are also aggressive with their dynamic toolpaths, and they are highly efficient with their programming.” Lucas says, “I first learned to machine a part on a Haas machine, and they have always been a good, solid and well-priced machine for us. constituents of air pollution, including nitrogen dioxide, ozone, sulfur dioxide and other atmospheric pollutants that have the greatest impact on human health and agriculture productivity. Ball completed the TEMPO instrument in 2018, delivered it to NASA Langley after a successful final acceptance review and stored and maintained the instrument until the spacecraft was ready for integration. Leveraging 40 years of heritage in Earth-observing instruments, Ball built the TEMPO instrument in tandem with the Geostationary Environmental Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS), the Asian element of a global air quality monitoring constellation of geostationary satellites. GEMS launched in February 2020. Ball is currently involved in several other space-based environmental science and monitoring missions. It is developing the Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS) of hyperspectral instruments that measure the global distribution and vertical structure of ozone for NASA and NOAA missions. Ball is also building the advanced spectrometer instrument for MethaneSAT, which will locate and measure methane emissions around the globe. Colorado Office of Economic Development Supports Advanced Industries The Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade, or OEDIT, handed out a total of $8,567,756 in grant funding to support Colorado’s advanced industries, which include work like advanced manufacturing, aerospace, bioscience and electronics. “As Colorado begins its recovery from the economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, support of the economic engines that are the advanced industries is more important than ever,” said Katie Woslager, senior manager of Advanced Industries. “These projects expand the Colorado innovation ecosystem, creating jobs, expanding industries and driving investment into the state.
