AUTHORIZED QUALICHEM DISTRIBUTOR
QualiChem, Inc. and Star Metal Fluids would like to thank all of our customers in Arizona and Utah who have responded to the call to help fight the COVID-19 virus. We are aware that there are multiple companies in each state participating in programs that include COVID-19 test kits, personal protective equipment, and ventilator components. While most of these companies do not want to be singled out or recognized by name, we believe it important enough to the local manufacturing community that their contributions not go without thanks. Your friends, your neighbors, your peers, and perhaps in some cases, your competitors, are doing what they can to ensure we get back to a more normal way of life. American manufacturers of all sizes, from all regions and industries, are stepping up to fight this invisible enemy. Whether redirecting resources toward production of open-source face shields, ventilator components, or test kits, Americans are heeding the call. And while we thank these manufacturers, it is more important to acknowledge the real heroes in this battle: the healthcare professionals, the pharmacists, the truckers, the grocery store employees, and all those who remain engaged with the public despite the risks. Together, as Americans in all capacities, we will overcome. Thank you to everyone for doing their share. Sincerely, The management teams at QualiChem, Inc. and Star Metal Fluids

I have talked with somemanufacturing entities that are having banner years, though they are likely very much in the minority. Many of us are hanging in there, just counting the days until 2020 is over and praying for some sort of return to ‘normalcy’. Thankfully, there is much good news on the horizon. Many economists are forecasting that the US economy could return to near normal late in 2021. Their projections largely hinge upon the availability and distribution of the COVID vaccine. The annual U.S. Economic Outlook indicated that the real gross domestic product is expected to rise by 4.2% in 2021. “Regardless of what happens in the near term with the virus, I think the recovery will be pretty vigorous once we get a wide rollout of a vaccine,” said Daniil Manaenkov, U.S. forecasting specialist for the U-M Research Seminar in Quantitative Economics. Other economic forecasts are similarly upbeat, as is the U-M forecast. Moody’s economist Mark Zandi, for example, is forecasting that real GDP will increase by 4.1% in 2021. Zandi said his assumptions are based on the passage of a $1.5 trillion fiscal rescue package in February 2021 and a coronavirus vaccine that could be widely distributed by mid-2021. The U-M forecast gives a glimpse into what consumers might expect when it comes to the jobs outlook, car sales, mortgages and other factors. Here’s a look: A new hope for a V-shaped recovery. Growth in the 2020 third quarter at a 7.4% quarterly rate was extremely positive and shattered most expectations, the U-M forecasters noted, giving a footing for growth ahead. More people will be working. The U-M forecast says the U.S. unemployment rate is expected to fall slowly and steadily from 6.9% in October to 5.6% by the end of 2021. The expectation is that the U.S. jobless rate could hit 5.1% by the end of 2022. And in some additional positive news specific to our industry:

The US Manufacturing PMI (Precision Metalforming Index) jumped to 56.7 in November of 2020 from 53.4 in October, beating market forecasts of 53.The reading pointed to the strongest expansion in factory activity since September of 2014, amid a marked rise in output, largely driven by a notable uptick in new business as demand conditions improved. Moreover, the rise in production was the fastest since March 2015 and new export orders also rebounded. Finally, business confidence soared to the strongest since February of 2015.
Published bi-monthly to keep precision manufacturers abreast of news and to supply a viable vendor source for the industry.
September 2020 U.S. cutting tool consumption totaled $156.1 million, according to the U.S. Cutting Tool Institute (USCTI) and AMT – The Association For Manufacturing Technology. This total, as reported by companies participating in the Cutting Tool Market Report collaboration, was up 14.7% from August’s $136.1 million. According to Brad Lawton, chairman of AMT’s Cutting Tool Product Group, “Great, we have seen an improvement of sales numbers, which is a whisper to reduce the uncertainty from the 2020 year of trauma. The cutting tool industry will recover, but we all know it will take time and we must be patient. Stay focused and we will see the numbers continue to improve.”

Announcements & Releases Equipment Leasing and Finance Industry Confidence Ticks Up in November
will “remain the same” during the same four-month time period, an increase from 66.7% the previous month. 11.5% believe demand will decline, relatively unchanged from 11.1% in October.
The Equipment Leasing & Finance Foundation (the Foundation) releases the November 2020 Monthly Confidence Index for the Equipment Finance Industry (MCI-EFI). The index reports a qualitative assessment of both the prevailing business conditions and expectations for the future as reported by key executives from the $900 billion equipment finance sector. Overall, confidence in the equipment finance market is 56.1, an increase from the October index of 55.0.
• 23.1% of the respondents expect more access to capital to fund equipment acquisitions over the next four months, down from 33.3% in October. 76.9% of executives indicate they expect the “same” access to capital to fund business, an increase from 66.7% last month. None expect “less” access to capital, unchanged from the previous month.
The Foundation also releases highlights of the COVID-19 Impact Survey of the Equipment Finance Industry, a monthly survey of industry leaders designed to track the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the equipment finance industry. 55 survey responses were collected from November 2-13 on a range of topics, including payments deferrals, defaults, and staff analysis. 54% of companies expect that the default rate will be greater in 2020 than in 2019, down from 56% in October; 35% expect it to be the same, unchanged from last month; and 11% expect it to be lower compared to 9% last month. Only 4% of lenders reported having more than 10% of their portfolio now under deferral, down from 7% of lenders last month. The largest percentage of respondents (69%) have 0.014.99% of dollars outstanding currently under payment deferral in their owned portfolio. Comments from survey respondents follow MCI-EFI survey comments below, and additional survey results and analysis are available at https://www.leasefoundation.org/ industry-resources/covid-impact-survey/. When asked about the outlook for the future, MCI-EFI survey respondent Michael Romanowski, President, Farm Credit Leasing, said, “All eyes are on the election. Depending on what shakes out with the political environment will impact businesses’ longer-term plans for investment. The present environment is on shaky ground and fiscal stimulus is needed to stop the tremors.” November 2020 Survey Results: The overall MCI-EFI is 56.1, an increase from the October index of 55.0. • When asked to assess their business conditions over the next four months, 26.9% of executives responding said they believe business conditions will improve over the next four months, down from 29.6% in October. 53.9% believe business conditions will remain the same over the next four months, an increase from 51.9% the previous month. 19.2% believe business conditions will worsen, an increase from 18.5% in October. • 19.2% of the survey respondents believe demand for leases and loans to fund capital expenditures (capex) will increase over the next four months, down from 22.2% in October. 69.2% believe demand A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Announcements Continued Finance Industry:The Foundation invites all regular ELFA member companies to participate each month. Survey responses are limited to one per company. If you did not receive a survey and would like to participate, please contact Stephanie Fisher, sfisher@leasefoundation.org, by November 30 to determine eligibility for inclusion in the December survey. Who participates in the MCI-EFI? The respondents are comprised of a wide cross-section of industry executives, including large-ticket, middle-market and small-ticket banks, independents and captive equipment finance companies. The MCI-EFI uses the same pool of 50 organization leaders to respond monthly to ensure the survey’s integrity. Since the same organizations provide the data from month to month, the results constitute a consistent barometer of the industry’s confidence.
Reshoring Initiative Data Report: Reshoring Up Despite Covid. Key To A Strong Recovery In 2021 And Beyond Despite COVID, reshoring is up in 2020. Job announcements for 2020 are projected to reach 110,000, which will bring the total since 2010 to over 1 million by year’s end. In 2020 reshoring is exceeding foreign direct investment (FDI) in job creation. Reshoring will continue to be key to manufacturing growth and to U.S. economic recovery in 2021 and beyond. From 2010 through A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •
8 • Nov / Dec 2020
2019 over 900,000 reshoring and FDI manufacturing jobs have been announced. Allowing for a conservative two-year lag, over 600,000 will have been hired. This figure accounts for 44% of the 1.41 million increase in U.S. manufacturing jobs since the manufacturing employment low in 2010, and 5% of total 12/31/19 manufacturing employment of 12.9 million. The 2019 combined reshoring and FDI announcements totaled more than 117,000 manufacturing jobs, the third highest pre-revision annual rate on record. Additionally, the number of companies reporting new reshoring and FDI in 2019 was at the second highest annual level in history, 1,100 companies. The numbers demonstrate that reshoring and FDI are major contributing factors to the country’s rebounding manufacturing sector. About the Report The Reshoring Initiative’s 1H2020 Data Report contains data on U.S. reshoring and FDI by companies that have shifted production or sourcing from offshore to the United States. The report includes cumulative data from 2010 through 2019, as well as projections from 2020 1st half data and provides data and analysis in 10 categories, ranging from the number of manufacturing jobs gained, to reasons cited for reshoring, to a breakdown of data by industry, country, region and state. Announcements Continued
Announced to Reach 1 Million by Year End, 2019 Data Updates and Forecasts for 2020. Top Takeaways from the Report Due to the pandemic, in 2020 we are seeing U.S. reshoring outpacing FDI for the first time since 2014. COVID uncertainty is causing companies to emphasize operations in their home countries. The national demand to shorten and close supply chain gaps for essential products to make the U.S. less vulnerable is most likely to benefit the following industries: PPE, medical, tech, and defense. Already, 60% of cases after March 2020 mention the pandemic as a factor in reshoring decisions.
AgieCharmilles, Harry Moser founded the Reshoring Initiative to move lost jobs back to the U.S. For his efforts with the Reshoring Initiative, he was named to Industry Week magazine’s Manufacturing Hall of Fame in 2010. Additional information on the Reshoring Initiative and its many sponsoring associations and companies is available at www. reshorenow.org.
NUNTMA Welcomes Newest Member Silencerco
Going forward, we believe President Biden will prioritize reshoring highly but apply different methods than President Trump.
The (NUNTMA) Northern Utah Chapter of the National Tooling and Machining Association is pleased to announce its newest member, SilencerCo. SilencerCo is a manufacturer of firearm suppressors headquartered in West Valley City, Utah, founded in 2008.The SilencerCo Omega 36M has been awarded the Suppressor of theYear award from Guns & Ammo magazine for the second consecutive year.
There is continued growth in efforts by MEPs, EDOs and states to enable reshoring. The Reshoring Initiative is deeply involved in these efforts. By year’s end we will be working with 50 or more companies to reshore about 100 products. As a measure of corporate interest, the demand for this service is more than 20X the rate of 2019. Companies are doing their best to reshore, and we are here to help.
Established in 2010, the NUNTMA is a gathering place for machine shops in Northern Utah. The (NUNTMA) Northern Utah Chapter of the National Tooling and Machining Association’s mission is to help members achieve profitable growth and business success through advice, camaraderie, education, networking, information, advocacy, collaboration and services.

Corporate Expansions Will Be in Suburbs, Mid-Sized Cities While 61% of projects are moving forward, the location choices at the top of the list include Boise, Colorado Springs and Columbia, S.C. The impact of COVID-19 has extended into the decision-making process that determines where a company will locate.Suburban areas and mid-size cities, followed by rural areas, will be the biggest winners of new corporate expansions and relocations, with large urban areas falling to the bottom of the list, according to a survey releads on July 16 by the Site Selectors Guild.“Everything from physical distancing to changing transit preferences has affected the way that corporations view location decisions,” said RickWeddle, CEO of the Site Selectors Guild. Conducted the week of June 29, 2020, in partnership with Development Counsellors International (DCI), the survey of Guild members aimed to uncover changes and new trends in corporate location strategy brought on by the COVID-19 crisis. Suburbs and Mid-Size CitiesWill Be the NextWinners for Corporate Location Projects -The pandemic has brought suburban areas and mid-size cities into the forefront of consideration for future site selection projects and even put rural areas well ahead of large urban areas. When members were asked about locations that are “likely” or “very likely” to be considered by corporations looking to expand, relocate or open new facilities in the next 12 months, 64% chose suburban areas, 57% chose mid-size cities, 31% chose rural areas, and just 10% chose large urban areas. Consultants indicated that NewYork would be hit especially hard among the nation’s largest cities. Of the consultants who agreed that large urban centers are “not at all” or “unlikely” to be considered for future projects, 100% said that New York City would be among the least likely locations to be considered for future projects in the next 12 months. Los Angeles and Chicago followed with 63% and 42%, respectively. Consultants were also asked to name specific mid-size cities that would be strong candidates for new loA2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain•

cations in the next year and named the following cities: • Boise, ID • Colorado Springs, CO • Columbia, SC • Columbus, OH • Greenville, SC • Huntsville, AL • Indanapolis, IN • Kansas City, MO • Raleigh-Durham, NC • Reno, NV • Tucson, AZ Consultants Report 61% of Site Selection Projects are Moving Forward- Consultants reported an uptick in projects moving forward in June compared to April, with 61% of Guild members reporting that companies are moving forward with site selection projects, a 16% increase since April. Of Guild members surveyed, 34% said that companies are pausing site selection projects, and 5% reported companies are consoli-
dating facilities or canceling site selection projects. Guild members also indicated that manufacturing will continue to be driven by the need to de-risk the global supply chain. There will be an accelerated rate of reshoring as well as more, smaller regional facilities to mitigate risk. Majority of Project Activity Predicted To Resume in 2021- When asked to predict when client companies will restart expanding or adding new facilities, 13% of consultants reported that projects had already started moving forward in Q2 2020; however, with a rapid rise in COVID-19 cases across the U.S., none of the Guild members predicted paused projects would restart in Q3 2020. Twenty-two percent indicated companies will restart projects in Q4 2020, 39% indicated Q1 2021 and 26% indicated after Q1 2021.
Demand Heats Up for Hot Tubs When Dana Camarillo realized her family wouldn’t go on their usual summer vacation because of the pandemic, she looked to create a relaxing getaway in her s backyard.
Camarillo installed a hot tub, and industry experts say she is not alone. Hot tub and pool sales nationally are up about 25% on average, according to the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance. Hot tub manufacturers and dealers say they are experiencing a surge in demand, with one dealer reporting that sales in 2020 have tripled compared to 2019. But with the jump in demand has come longer-than-usual wait times for customers and a nationwide shortage of supplies for manufacturers.

The problem is not unique to the hot tub industry. Sports and recreational products like bicycles and golf clubs, along with supplies for home improvement projects, have also experienced heightened demand. At the same time, manufacturers of those products, including hot tubs, are battling a shortage of labor and materials as people hunker down in their homes and turn to outdoor exercise. When the pandemic first hit, it wasn’t clear how the economic shutdown would affect the hot tub industry.“As it started to go on, we started to think maybe people are going to want stuff for their home,” Gold said. “But it did (happen) much harder and quicker than I thought.” Sales started to pick up in April and stayed that way until October, Gold said. Jim Ferguson, southwest sales manager for Utah-based hot tub manufacturer Bullfrog Spas, said the pandemic has led to a reduction in workforce because companies have had to implement social distancing rules on assembly lines. “That’s why this whole supply and demand is actually flipped upside down,” Ferguson said. “There’s a significant demand and an inability to supply the demand.” Ferguson said Bullfrog sales are up about 35% over 2019. Manufacturing Fortunes Under Biden
CMM Revo Half Page Final.indd 1
President-elect Joe Biden’s take on manufacturing is varied and complex. He wants to offer tax incentives for reshoring while raising corporate tax in general. He’s pushing to add high-paying manufacturing jobs, but he intends to make sure unions are at the table. Yet, perhaps his strongest offering to manufacturers is the likelihood of stability on tariffs. President-elect Biden’s incoming administration intends to “mobilize American manufacturing and innovation to ensure that the future is made in America. In recent speeches, Biden has noted he intends to bring home critical supply chains so that the US isn’t dependent on other countries in future crises. Biden also plans to build a strong industrial base and small-business-led supply chains to retain and create millions of good-paying union jobs in manufacturing and technology. A big part of Biden’s talk about manufacturing involves his intention to promote reshoring. He wants to discourage companies from building overseas. To do so, his platform offers companies a 10% advanceable tax credit for investments meant to create US manufacturing jobs or modernize US-based manufacturing facilities. For those companies offshoring their production while selling products back to the US, he wants them to pay a 30.8% tax penalty on their profits.
4/6/2020 2:04:17 PM A Biden policy proposal to encourage reshoring may come with some unintended thorniness. “Biden has proposed a 10% Made in America Tax Credit and a 10% surtax on offshoring. These would certainly help reshoring,” Harry Moser, founder of the Reshoring Initiative told Design News.Stability may be Biden’s most important offering when it comes to trade and tariffs. “Under Trump, companies could not forecast what tariff rates would apply to what products for how long. So, they delayed decisions,” said Moser.
During the Democratic primary, candidates pushed for strong tax policies aimed at corporations. Biden was generally considered far more moderate. His moderate tendencies will be more pronounced if the Senate remains in Republican hands. “The more extreme policies heard during the Democratic primary will probably not be implemented,” said Moser. “Those include much higher corporate and individual income taxes, wealth taxes, and Green New Deal. They won’t pass as long as the Senate stays in Republican hands.” Moser believes that a greater move toward alternative energy under a Biden administration could be good news for manufacturers – but only if it’s done right. “Alternative energy can potentially have a positive effect on manufacturing, but with two conditions,” said Moser. “First, the vast majority of the manufacturing of the alternative energy equipment must be done in the U.S. Thus, the windmills and solar panels must be made here and not just installed here.”“Second, the price business pays for electricity, and gas must be as low or lower than today, despite the first condition and without government subsidies,” said Moser. “US manufacturing costs are far too high now. A further disadvantage would be disastrous. By: Rob Spiegel A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Recycling Metals, Conserving Resources, Since 1961 Japanese Space Company Chooses Denver Area For New HQ A Japanese aerospace company has planted its flag in the Denver metro area and will base its fast-growing U.S. subsidiary here in order to tap the region’s space and engineering expertise. Ispace Technologies U.S. chose the area for its headquarters over possible locations in Texas or Florida as the place where the company will grow and develop a lunar lander designed to help establish industries on the moon. The proximity to offices of some of its commercial partners, including General Atomics, and the area’s depth of experienced space industry and engineering workers made it a natural fit, CEO Kyle Acierno told the Denver Business Journal. Ispace, a subsidiary of its Tokyo-based parent company, has two people in Denver now, Acierno and engineering lead Kursten O’Neill. They plan to hire a team to start competing for NASA contracts funding the development of lunar landers. “It will require tens or dozens of people,” Acierno said. “We intend to build out the team pretty quickly.” The Colorado School of Mines program studying and teaching about establishing minA2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

ing and similar industries in space was also a big draw, Acierno said. The company doesn’t yet have an office and is working from Acierno’s apartment, so finding a headquarters and lander development space for the small team will be among Ispace’s first tasks. The Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade last month authorized a tax incentive package worth up to $1.5 million to Ispace if it expands to as many as 48 employees. State officials, including Gov. Jared Polis, praised the company’s choice to grow here. “Ispace is a natural fit with Colorado’s robust aerospace sector,” said Betsy Markey, executive director of OEDIT. “Colorado earns the largest number of NASA and U.S. Government contracts outside of Washington, D.C., and our talented workforce enables growth. Given the role that the Ispace lunar lander is poised to play in continued space transport and discovery, the future for Ispace and Colorado’s aerospace sector is bright.” The state incentives helped sway to company toward the Denver area, but the main draws were the depth of workforce skill in the areas Ispace needs, the ease of access to the rest of the country and to Japan, and the

Precision aluminum and zinc die casting, machining and finishing.
The first jobs the company is likely to hire for will need people with skills in structure engineering, mechanical engineering, propulsion, avionics and similar skills, Ispace said.
Quality, Reliability and Service
There’s an unusual depth of talent in those kind of hardware specialties and would have been harder to find in places like Northern California, where Ispace had an office at a NASA campus and software industries dominate, or in Texas, said Acierno. Ispace’s parent company in Japan will continue working on smaller lunar landers it’s developing for commercial partners, he said. And while the North American branch of the company aims to work with NASA’s lunar programs, it’s also planning to be a player in what it sees as a commercial economy involving access to moon, what’s talked about in the space industry as a cis-lunar economy. “A lot of the near-term opportunities are infrastructure development that’s going to be necessary no matter who the customer is,” he said. “I don’t think there’s going to be many industries that won’t be impacted.” By Greg Avery – Senior Reporter, Denver Business Journal

Information technology and cybersecurity professionals want the opportunity to continue working from home after the pandemic, according to a report from CyberEdge Group, a tech marketing and research consulting firm in Annapolis, Maryland. Out of 600 IT security executives, managers and practitioners surveyed, 81% said they have liked working from home amid Covid-19, despite its challenges, and hope they can continue to do so.The finding was one of several detailed in the CyberEdge report highlighting the impact the pandemic has had on the IT security workforce. The survey respondents work for organizations with 1,000 or more employees across 19 industries in seven countries, including the United States. CybderEdge CEO Steve Piper said many IT professionals have been doing their jobs remotely for a majority of the year, and if their companies want to retain them beyond Covid-19, they may want to make those arrangements permanent. “We ask people every year about the biggest barriers for security professionals, and every year everybody talks about the shortage of qualified workers,” Piper told the Baltimore Business Journal. “This can be an answer for smart enterprises that want to fill those open vacancies for qualified security professionals — to consider a remote-work policy.”

The economic fallout of COVID-19 has had a severe impact on women in the workplace. In fact, 58% say COVID-19 has had a negative impact on their careers., according to a new survey from MetLife examining the barriers women are facing amid the pandemic. Despite this disruption – or perhaps because of it – roughly 1 in 4 women have been considering a career change since the pandemic hit. Many women are looking at STEM fields, specifically, with 2 in 5 noting that they are interested in pursuing a career in STEM, an industry forecasted to grow at a greater rate than non-STEM industries in the years ahead. “We have an opportunity to turn this moment of crisis into a moment of opportunity that accelerates the number of women entering STEM professions,” said Susan Podlogar, executive vice president and chief human resources officer at MetLife. “The key is to remove roadblocks so that top talent can enter, stay and
flourish in STEM careers.” While increased interest in STEM is promising, there are still barriers to overcome. Among the survey respondents: •
•
•
Only one-quarter of women feel that STEM professions are supportive of women and their career advancement, compared to nearly twice as many who said the education industry was supportive. Nearly half (44%) of women credit uncertainty as the biggest barrier to pursuing a career in STEM. Almost 25% of women said they were deterred by a lack of skills or lack of mentorship.
However, the survey also discovered several employer-offered programs that would encourage women to pursue careers in STEM, with more than one-third citing “returnship” programs – which help experienced professionals who left the workforce for an extended period of time relaunch their careers – and nearly 40% pointing to digital accelerator programs. “By understanding the obstacles women face, companies can develop solutions to make STEM a more attainable career choice,” said Bill Pappas, executive vice president and head of Global Technology and Operations at MetLife. BIG CHANGES ARE HAPPENING AT MMT PRODUCTIVITY... THEY ARE EXPANDING TO SUPPORT CUSTOMERS INTO THE NEXT DECADE
MMT Productivity’s New Denver Showroom
MMT Productivity is announcing its latest expansion. The Denver regional office has moved to their new facility, a state-ofthe-art 17,000 square foot building. Just last year, they completed a major expansion with their new 13,000 square foot facility in their Salt Lake City regional office.
Mark Smith, General Manager overseeing the Rocky Mountain divisions of MMT Productivity, says, “I was a proud member of the Moncktons MMT Productivity’s Salt Lake City Machine Tools Showroom team, in business since 1952 serving the Rocky Mountain States. with offices in Denver and Salt Lake City. 5 years ago, we merged with a larger entity, Productivity Inc. of Minneapolis, MN. Since 1968, Productivity, Inc. supported customers throughout Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, the Dakotas, and western Wisconsin. Through this merger, Productivity expanded their footprint to Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and New Mexico.” Mark elaborates, “This purchase was very favorable for our customers for a number of reasons: •
It expanded our resources dramatically; we now have a team that is 350 strong. You won’t find another dealer in the Rocky Mountain States that is able to provide this level of resources to its customers.
•
It provided us with many more machine tool lines. Through MMT, for many years we have carried the Haas, Makino, Citizen/Miyano lines, amongst others. With Productivity, we were able to add to our portfolio such fine machine tool
brands as Matsuura, Miyano, Okamoto and Hwacheon. Our two biggest strengths are aerospace -- and that’s commercial, military, and space -- and medical. •
We now have a full portfolio of tooling and accessories that we can offer our customers. A little background on this, nearly 38 years ago, in 1983, Productivity’s Tooling & Accessories department was created and had 25 product lines. In 2004, Productivity introduced its own brand of cutting tools and tooling line, Redline Tools. The entire catalog of Redline tools is proudly made in the USA.
Mark highlights a few leading brands. “Haas is the largest US manufacturer of CNC machine tools, and they continue to evolve in so many ways.Their ‘Haas Build A Quote’ has been in existence for years but more recently Haas has really perfected it. During this pandemic it has been invaluable to our customers. They can literally select their machine and options and get complete pricing online. Haas is the only machine tool builder that offers complete transparency in their pricing. This means that whether you are a Fortune 1000 customer or a 2-man shop, you will see the same pricing. With our Haas line, we’ve seen a 100% increase over the past 2 years in 5 axis machine purchases. Haas significantly expanded their UMC 5 axis line from just the 750 to now a 500, 750, 1000, 1250 and 1500. With our Haas line, we keep a parts inventory of ~$40,000 in our vans at any given time, and within the company, we have an inventory that approaches $3 million. Another valuable program we can offer our customers through Haas is the ‘Haas Operator Certification Program. To date, we’ve certified approximately 50 machinists. Smith calls Makino “phenomenal on high-end aerospace and medical,” highlighting its ATHENA voice-controlled platform. “You talk to the CNC control and it creates code and operates the machine.” Japanese-made machine tools are often handcrafted, and that makes a big difference, notes Smith. “It’s the hand-scraping, hand-balancing, and attention to detail during assembly.” The end result is “a higher level of Continued Next Page A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

accuracy built into the machine. Our Okamoto line offers our customers some of the most advanced grinding machinery in the industry. MMT also sells Citizen’s Swiss-style lathes and low-frequency vibration (LFV) machines. “We’ve grown that business,” says Smith. “That’s probably one of our biggest growth areas in the last five years.” He says a Citizen LFV machine “actually breaks the chip by coming in and out of the cut and yet still holds geometric tolerance. Chip management is one of the biggest problem areas for automation.” Korea is renown for it industrial prowess, and Hwacheon has been a superior Korean machine tool builder since 1952. Hwacheon spindles and CNC software are created with their own proprietary technologies; they aren’t using a 3rd party as some machine tool builders do. Miyano Machinery, now wholly owned by Citizen, has become a world leader in the manufacturing of precision machining equipment. The primary features of Miyano products that have propelled the brand to its success are its high rigidity spindles, hand scraped slideways, and platform-style construction of the machine bed. Matsuura has been at the forefront of providing engineering excellence through innovation since 1935, and they are indeed pioneers in the development of high speed machining and the manufacture of automated, unmanned high accuracy CNC machine tools.Their products are considered by many to be technology leaders in 5 axis, horizontal, vertical, linear motor and multi tasking CNC machine tools.” Preventive maintenance “is one of our biggest areas of growth,” says Smith. MMT’s program involves annual evaluation and educational sessions that help reduce downtime. “There’s nobody else doing that.” Contact MMT Productivity today to see how they can help you with all your machining and tooling needs. You can visit their website at mmtproductivity.com or call them 1-800-947-8665. Hear from Nate Lebsack, Axelson Machine, Frederick, CO “5 years ago we weren’t getting the service we expected from our current tooling supplier. Moncktons (MMT) had just partnered with Productivity, Inc. so we contacted them to do some quoting on our tooling needs. Cory Lottman was our tooling account manager from Productivity when we started with them, and he continues to provide outstanding support for us today. We have Productivity’s Fast Track Vending solution for our tooling. It is beneficial in so many ways for our machine shop. We get a weekly report (we could get daily if we needed) and this tells us what tools we need to reorder. This system helps us to understand the true cost of the tooling on a given project and it also really provides a cost savings to us; we can reduce shipping costs and we’re not writing orders everyday for tooling. The advantages to having an organized system are huge and with this system we never have a machine down due to tooling.” Cory says, “Productivity developed its own software system with the Fast Track Vending, and this helped to lower the cost of the system. It is actually very cost effective even for small and medium machine shops.” Nate adds, “The fact that Productivity’s tooling support is local is a huge plus for us. Cory and his team can get me anything I need from cutting tools, to inserts, to thread gages, to name a few.Their turnaround on quotes is outstanding, nearly always within a day. He continues, “When we are trialing a new tool with Cory and Productivity, if the tool doesn’t work they take it back and there is no cost to us. Only when it works, do we get invoiced.” Cory says, “Our Fast Track Vending system helps our customers to manage their tooling requirements. It’s got a nice feature that allows Nate and other customers to override the system; changing order points if a particular job gets very busy or has a planned slow down. Fast Track gives our customers complete control of the tools they need.” Nate often takes advantage of the products in Productivity’s ‘Redline’ catalog. “The entire catalog contains Productivity branded products, and 100% of these products are made in the USA”, he says. At Axelson Machine, they purchase nearly 1000 different SKU items from Productivity. Axelson Machine has built a reputation for success in custom design requirements, prototype and production capabilities. Continued Next Page
Hear from Dave Jeffrey, JPM Advanced Manufacturing, Colorado Springs, CO When you hear about a successful precision manufacturing company that got its start as a prototype shop, you immediately recognize the talent of its founders. After all, making prototype parts means you aren’t really ever making the same part more than once or twice. You are being tasked by your customer with assisting with the design of the developer’s initial concept. And prototyping is just how JPM Prototype & Manufacturing got its start approximately 20 years ago. Dave Jeffrey started the company out of his garage and his first customer was his former employer. “They asked me to move from Colorado to Minnesota, and when I didn’t agree to this, they offered me a severance package. This severance package provided the seed money to start my business.” Business grew rapidly for Dave, so much so that he had to move the business out of his residence and into a 1500 square foot bay. Shortly after, the bay wasn’t enough, and so JPM expanded another 1500 square foot into an additional bay. “Our customers apparently were very pleased with our work”, Dave says, “and they encouraged us to support their production machining requirements.” In 2008, (yes 2008) right before the recession, JPM secured a loan to purchase their own building, a 42,000 square foot facility. The loan also enabled the purchase of 7 new machines that would be required for the production work they were doing, as well as the cost of the build out of the initial 18,000 square feet they needed. There are several factors that have contributed to JPM (now renamed JPM Advanced Manufacturing)’s success: 1) A belief in continuous investment in new technology. “We’ve purchased a new machine every year of our business”, Dave says. The company has additionally embraces automation in their machine tool purchases, including 5-axis machining and robotics. 2) Through the request of their customers, they shifted from 90% of their business coming from prototype work to one in which 90% of their business now is in production work.
3) They value relationships, from their customers to their suppliers to their employees, and to the industry. Dave remains active in manufacturing associations that help to promote precision manufacturing, and is today current Board Chair of Colorado Advanced Manufacturing Association (CAMA). Additionally, the company has supported its customers so well over the years that it has seen consistent growth year over year, and this despite the fact that they don’t do any marketing nor do they have a dedicated sales force. “All growth has happened through word of mouth”, Dave says. When it comes to the employees at the company, Dave says that many have years of tenure with the company. “We’ve never done a layoff, and we have in Sean Walker, our General Manager, not only one of the most gifted machinists you will ever encounter, but also a key executive who helps to mentor and grow the organization’s skills.” 4) Dave says, “When it comes to our machine tool dealer, in MMT, A Division of Productivity, we found in Mark Smith, Vice President of the Company, a true champion for our business.” Dave met Mark ~ 20 years ago, when he was planning to purchase his first new Haas machine. “Since then, nearly every new machine we’ve ever purchased has been through MMT Productivity, including so many of the lines they carry, including: a. b. c. d. e. f.
Haas 3, 4 and 5 axis machining centers Haas Multi-Axis lathes Makino EDM Matsuura CNC machining center Citizen/Miyano Swiss Screw machine centers FANUC robots
He adds that since MMT merged with Productivity Inc. just about 5 years ago, the Colorado entity Dave purchases from also has tooling. “We are buying much of our tooling through MMT Productivity today, and you can’t beat the knowledge that is inherent in their entire team”, he adds. Dave says that you will not find the customer service that his company gets from MMT, A Division of Productivity at any other dealer in the region. He elaborates, “Their technicians are outstanding, and when we have a machine down, with MMT we are typically back up and running same or next day.” A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

The spacecraft, formally called the Origins-Spectral Interpretation-Resource Identification-Security-Regolith Explorer, traveled 2.2 billion miles to collect at least 60 grams of what is the first U.S. sample of an asteroid, and what’s meant to be the largest extra-terrestrial sample of anything other than the moon. NASA and researchers say they believe the mission is successful. But after discovering the escaping bits of sample, they canceled plans for sample-measuring maneuvers this weekend and now won’t know for sure how much was collected until OSIRIS-REx’s protective return capsule lands in the desert of Utah in 2023. “I think we’re going to have to wait until we get home,” Lauretta said. “The good news is we think we have way more than 60 grams.” NASA chose the OSIRIS-REx mission in 2011 to bring back the first asteroid sample to the U.S. and allow sample research that Lauretta’s team hopes will help explain the formation of the solar system. Colorado-Built OSIRIS-REx Spacecraft ‘Almost Too Successful’ In 2.2 Billion-Mile Journey The sample collection head of NASA’s OSIRIS-REx probe is stuck open and bits of the asteroid it collected Tuesday are floating into space, prompting a scramble to avoid losing more. The mission, being flown from Lockheed Martin Space headquarters in Jefferson County, where the $400 million spacecraft was built, was scheduled to conduct maneuvers this weekend to determine the mass of what the spacecraft collected from the surface of the asteroid Bennu, but the spin motion required for the measurement could trigger more pieces of the asteroid sample to escape the container that scientists suspect is overstuffed and jammed open by a one-centimeter chunk. “We were almost too successful,” said Dante Lauretta, the University of Arizona researcher who’s the OSIRIS-REx mission principle investigator, updating media during a surprise NASA press conference last month. The news added a dose of unexpected uncertainty to a mission that had previously gone according to plan, with the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft sending A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Some of its projects expected to launch into orbit before 2023 include experimental high-speed data satellites for the Blackjack Program of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and the U.S. Air Force; weather observation satellites for Golden-based PlanetIQ, and a methane-detection satellite for the nonprofit Environmental Defense Fund. By Greg Avery, Denver Business Journal
Its Aurora offices are where it develops ground-control and data-handling technologies used in global positioning system and weather satellite fleets, and for classified defense and intelligence agency use.
ISpace Picks Denver For U.S. Operation
“RaytheonTechnologies is a leader in developing advanced sensors, cyber and software solutions,” said George Stafford, president and CEO of Blue Canyon. “That leadership, coupled with our innovative and turnkey small-satellite solutions, will allow us to continue to disrupt the space industry and drive our customers’ success.”
Defense prime contractors have grown more interested in small satellite technologies as the U.S. military begins to test them as a resilient and flexible way of placing critical surveillance and data capabilities in orbit. The interest in the technology has spurred several industry partnerships and acquisitions. Lockheed Martin Space has been adding small satellite manufacturing capabilities at its large Jefferson County campus. Blue Canyon Technologies is currently building more than 90 spacecraft for government, commercial and academic customers. It opened an 80,000-square-foot satellite constellation factory and headquarters facility in Lafayette earlier this year, expanding beyond its offices in Boulder and manufacturing space in New Mexico.
Japanese aerospace company Ispace Inc. has selected Denver to house its U.S. subsidiary, selecting Colorado over sites in Texas and Florida. The company is developing a lunar lander to help establish industries on the moon. CEO Kyle Acierno cited the proximity to offices of some of the company’s commercial partners and the Denver area’s depth of experienced space industry and engineering workers as factors in the decision. Acierno and engineering lead Kursten O’Neill expect to hire a team to start competing for NASA contracts funding the development of lunar landers. “It will require tens or dozens of people,” Acierno told the Denver Business Journal. Centennial-Based Jet Maker Rolls Out Test Version Of Its Supersonic Passenger Plane
The single-seat, 73-foot-long plane will prove crucial design elements and flight worthiness of the Boom concept and inform the final design and manufacturing of the company’s 65-passenger Overture jet.
Colorado’s most high-flying startup surpassed its most important milestone yet — finishing the test version of its supersonic jet and readying it for its first takeoff.
Boom, formed in 2014, is a graduate of the Silicon Valley startup acceleratorY Combinator. It has raised more than $140 million from investors and pursued plane designs promising to cut international travel times in half, making Washington D.C. to Paris a four-hour flight or Seattle to Tokyo in less than seven hours, and yet still having affordability comparable to fares today.
Boom Supersonic, the Centennial-based company formed to build supersonic planes for passenger airlines, unveiled its XB-1 test plane in a virtual video show that featured some of the company’s high-profile investors, military and former NASA officials, as well as slick video of highlighting the glossy new jet itself.
Affordable supersonic flights will alter more than just travel times, Blake Scholl, Boom’s CEO and founder, is fond of saying.“Ultimately, it will change the way we experience the world,” he said
“We’ve now shown the world that we can take a paper airplane and turn it into a physical build,” said Julie Valk, vice president of Boom operations, in the rollout presentation.
It also shows that Boom — which started with an exciting vision and founding team — has built an organization capable of executing its A Z MANUFACTURING SW • 55 • Nov / Dec 2020 ambitious plan, which is where many startups stumble and fail, said Reid Hoffman, founder of LinkedIn and an early investor in Boom.

The company, which employs 140 people now, plans to break ground in 2022 on its initial factory producing Overture planes. Boom expects to select and announce where that factory will be next year. Several international airlines are interested in buying planes and made some purchase commitments, with Japan Airlines having ordered 20 planes and being first in line to debut the planes on routes in Asia. Boom charges $200 million per plane, Scholl said. Overture will essentially be just the business class and forward cabin of existing planes that airlines fly internationally now, but they’ll be able to fly the routes twice as frequently because of their speed and use half the onboard crew because of their size, Scholl said. That means the planes themselves should be “profit machines” for airlines even with affordable fares, he said, and that will be part of how supersonic flight helps remake the industry over the next decade.By Greg Avery – Senior Reporter, Denver Business Journal
American Bullet Shortage Spells Profits For Idaho Manufacturing Plant A nationwide ammunition shortage is good news for Vista Outdoor, which owns a munitions factory in Lewiston.Weeks ago, the company announced it earned $78 million in profit during its latest quarter compared to a nearly $12 million loss this time last year. “We anticipate this heightened level of demand fueled by many factors, including civil unrest, a heightened desire for personal protection and increases in recreational shooting activities, to continue into the future,” said Vista Outdoor CEO Christopher Metz. The company owns several well-known brands, including Camelback, CCI and it closed on buying Remington’s ammo and accessory lines last month. Mets saidVista Outdoor also has a year’s worth of ammunition orders in the pipeline worth more than $1 billion. “This is unprecedented for our company,” he said. “With demand far outstripping supply and inventory levels in the channel at all-time lows, we see strong demand continuing.” Metz said the company’s ammunition sectors haven’t slowed down production – they just couldn’t keep up. Amid High Unemployment SomeWorkers Look For New Careers Normally, Jacob Narayan works as a waiter at an upscale steakhouse in Park City. But given all that’s happened in 2020, he’s set his sights on a new career. On a clear day outside Park City, he pulled over on the side of a narrow, tree-lined road that winds its way through a mountainous valley. He grabbed his drone with a camera mounted on the front. The propellers whirred into action and he sent it flying off over the trees. Narayan was using the drone to film a small house about five miles away. It sits on a quiet cul-de-sac next to a lake. Mt. Timpanogos — the second highest peak in the Wasatch Range — is visible in the distance. Narayan filmed all of it, with the hope that the footage can help sell the house. He’s not a real estate agent, but was hired by one to make a video they can show to prospective buyers. He hopes to make a career out of flying drones, and so far he’s been able to find work in the still-thriving real estate market. Narayan and many other Utahns have had to pivot their plans when they were laid off or when business slowed down at their old place of work.“Right now, we’re fishing,” he said. “We’re finding a really cool shot that can make my real estate video very competitive. Because I’m not just selling the house, I’m selling the environment that the house is in.” Real estate is one of the few booming industries in Utah during the pandemic. New home construction has hit record levels, with the median price of a single-family home up 10% since April alone. In Park City, realtors have reported selling million dollar properties to out-of-state buyers, some without ever seeing them in person. Narayan is hoping he can parlay that into a new career in aerial photography. Even A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

though he’s back to working at the restaurant now after being laid off for a few months, he doesn’t know how long it will last.“I think if the economy really takes a hit, people are not going to go and have a $75 steak,” he said. “I saw that and I knew that I needed to do something.” At 46, Narayan became one of the 325,000 people in Utah who lost their jobs after the coronavirus began spreading through the U.S. While applying for unemployment benefits, he heard about some of the retraining programs available in the state. Several have recently been created in response to the pandemic, such as the Learn &Work in Utah program, which launched in July to give workers displaced by COVID-19 free or low-cost training at local colleges in high demand fields. The Utah Department of Workforce Service also offers training under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act. The federal program was signed into law in 2014 and is open to applicants year-round. Both programs look to the labor market to see what opportunities are available and then help people get the resources and training they need to land a job in those areas. Through WIOA, Narayan was able to get some money to help buy his drone and start an apprenticeship. It’s a path state officials are suggesting others in his position take. “We understand that it’s not going to be easy,” said DWS Assistant Deputy Director Nate McDonald. “We understand that there are going to be hundreds of people searching for potentially the same job you are. And that is why now is the time to start looking.” Embarking on a new career is a tough decision, especially for older workers, said University of Utah Eccles School
of Business Dean Taylor Randall, who is also an advisor on the governor’s coronavirus economic response task force. Utah unemployment claims hit their peak in early May, with 127,532 people filing for benefits. Many have since returned to work or found new jobs, though the state unemployment rate jumped up slightly in September as more people are looking for work.
WE OFFER WORLD CLASS THREAD ROLLING CABABILITIES YOU CANNOT FIND ELSEWHERE
Unlike previous recessions, which almost uniformly flattened the economy, Randall said this time around certain industries — such as real estate — are actually doing better than ever. Construction, he said, has seen 8,000 more jobs this year compared to last. The transportation and utilities and finance industries have also seen growth of about 1,500 jobs each.
CNC Swiss & CNC Vertical Mill Machining Thread Rolling Lead Screws OD & Centerless Grinding
The DWS “hot jobs” website also lists over 33,000 open positions, he said, from entry level to management positions. But other industries are suffering. Randall said the leisure and hospitality sector, which includes hotel, restaurant and tourism jobs, has lost around 26,000 positions statewide. Professional and business services, which includes jobs like architects, lawyers and office administrators, have lost another 6,000 jobs. The challenge is it’s almost impossible to tell where things are heading.Randall said given the uncertainty, retraining for a new job is the best way for people to hedge their bets, so that if their jobs don’t return they’ll have another skill-set to fall back on. And he said the best time to start is while still receiving unemployment benefits, which people can only get for 39 weeks — a deadline that’s fast approaching for many. Tech executive Trina Limpert said transitioning is a particular challenge — but also an opportunity — for women. In Utah, they face one of the country’s biggest wage gaps, making 70% of their male counterparts — compared to 80% nationally — according to a report from YWCA Utah. Nationally, they’ve also been leaving the workforce about four times the rate of men because of the pandemic.“This is a very emotional journey for a lot of these women,” Limpert said. “I’ve seen things from ‘my husband got laid off’ or ‘I need a more stable income.’ It’s created this urgency and need to be able to shift.” Limpert recently launched a 9-week coding and networking bootcamp in Utah,TECH-MOMS, to help women break into the industry at a time when they need it most. She said tech is a great choice for women not only because it is doing well right now, but it also is a field women tend to earn more in and one that offers flexibility. Classes are taught in two cohorts, one in Ogden and another in Lehi. Women attend classes in person on Saturdays, and they’re limited to 15 people for social distancing. Participants learn the basics of a few coding languages and network with experts in the field. Limpert said she is working on expanding the program to other universities across the state, and is accepting applications for its second round of classes.

She lost her job in March, and though she recently got a position at a manufacturing company, she’s still finishing the program and hoping tech is in her future. Yarisantos said the whole process has been like running a marathon.“There are spurts where you’re excited and then you’re like,‘this sucks,’” she said. “And then when you’re almost getting close to the finish line, it’s like, ‘oh, Why Contact Faustson Tool? my gosh, there’s the finish line right there!’”

The Falls Church, Virginia-based public company has 350 positions open now between its sites in Aurora, Boulder and Colorado Springs, and the growth of its work in national defense-related space payloads, missile defense nuclear grounds systems and related software mean it’s likely to add more. “We are bringing in a lot of new growth,” said Lauren Smith, operations manager in Northrop Grumman’s operations unit. Smith herself is relatively new to the Aurora site for Northrop Grumman, having moved a year ago from the company’s space programs in southern California. Northrop Grumman Corp. employs 90,000 worldwide, more than 2,200 of them at its three Front Range locations today. Much of the work it does in Colorado is classified, some of it closely tied to military sites at Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora and Schriever Air Force Base outside Colorado Springs. About 35% of the company’s workforce in Colorado are military veterans, the company says. Northrop Grumman is among 1,000 aerospace companies in the state that employed 27,300 people in 2019 and recorded $12.3 billion in sales, according the Denver Metro Area Economic Development Corp. A high-profile new program Northrop Grumman is working on involves building a new ground-based nuclear missile fleet to replace the U.S. military’s Minuteman III missiles. The company won a $13.3 billion contract in September to get started. The program is expected to last for decades. Some of the company’s Colorado expansion is to hire people qualified to help designing new ground systems for ground-based nuclear weapons, and for other classified U.S. military systems. Northern Grumman also designs satellite instruments for the U.S. military and civilian satellites locally. The positions it’s hiring for are software engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, space operations, cybersecurity, business management and administration, the company says. Many of its positions require national security clearances to work on secret and top-secret projects, but not all require it and Northrop Grumman encourages people without clearances to apply as well, Smith said. Smith left NASA, where she started as an aerospace engineer, five years ago to work at the company. She has since worked on aircraft-related systems, space projects that were large and small, and is now in management. “The industry is growing. We’re working on some of the most challenging and exciting missions in this industry at Northrop Grumman,” said Smith, who is a mechanical and aerospace engineer. In September, the Air Force awarded the company a $13.3 billion contract for engineering and manufacturing work on replacing the nation’s intercontinental ballistic missile system. Northrop Grumman said it will carry out the work at its facilities in Colorado, Utah and other states across the country as part of its Ground Based Strategic Deterrent program. Smith said the company has about 2,200 employees in Colorado and more than 90,000 altogether. It has operations in Aurora, Boulder, Colorado Springs, Buckley Air Force Base and Schriever Air Force Base. Northrop Grumman’s programs in Colorado include supporting space mission payloads and ground systems and sustaining customers’ satellites in space.
