Editors Corner I hope you are well during this difficult time. Everyone is struggling with his or her own version of this crisis. We may be sick, or we may have loved ones who are ill. For many, we are faced with isolation and economic uncertainty. Our medical colleagues in the Emergency Rooms and ICUs are being asked to work tireless hours in very dangerous conditions. The Coronavirus pandemic has indeed rocked our world.Yet, what often happens during crises is that we can see some truly beautiful things that help us remember how incredibly good people can be. Elon Musk, despite downplaying the severity of the Coronavirus, nonetheless stepped up to secure 1255 ventilators from China’s oversupply. Celebrities, from athletes to singers and actors, were amazingly generous in their contributions, from food to monetary donations. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation pledged $100 million, and Arnold Schwarzenegger donated $1 million. Companies like Facebook, Apple, and Goldman Sachs donated their stockpiles of facemasks, including N95 respirators, to healthcare workers. Aside from people’s generosity, there are behavioral changes that we hope will be woven into the fabric of our culture moving forward. Panic buying is especially hard on older people, some of whom are less able to get to the shops regularly. To date, the highest Coronavirus mortality rates have been among through 70 and older — so many grocery stores have stepped in to open early just for seniors. In March 2020, the world was well into global shutdown measures designed to slow the spread of the virus. According to the European Space Agency, that had a shocking impact on pollution levels over China. When they compared air pollution and levels of nitrogen dioxide to the levels in the air at the same time the previous year, they found a huge drop. And that’s a big deal: nitrogen dioxide not only makes respiratory diseases worse for those who have them, but it is also responsible for global heating. Further, the drop in pollution could prove life saving. Stanford’s Earth System Science professor Marshall Burke says that the improvement in air quality could result in saving the lives of thousands of people. More people, he says, than have died of the virus in China. Working from home should become a viable option for many after the pandemic. For many, there’s really no reason why they can’t work remotely. But switching has been slow to happen — according to CNBC, it’s entirely possible that in a world post-COVID-19, that’s going to change. And it makes sense. Gallup polls suggest that workers are most productive when they can work remotely two or three days out of the workweek, with the other time spent in meetings and on collaboration. And there’s a bonus for companies, too — for every employee who spends half their time working remotely, they save around $11,000 a year. We must recognize the need to move some critical pharmaceutical and medical manufacturing back to the United States. I was astounded to learn that 100% of the active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) for two vital products — penicillin and the blood-thinner heparin — are manufactured exclusively in China. The majority of personal protective equipment (PPE) used by U.S. healthcare providers is manufactured in China and other countries hit hardest by the coronavirus. Only two U.S.-based companies — 3M and Prestige Ameritech — are full-line manufacturers of N95 respirators, and they historically have not produced enough units to meet domestic demand. Until next issue, God bless our troops and God bless all of those suffering from COVID-19. May we all be well on the road to recovery, medically, financially and spiritually. May we learn important lessons that will help make our planet a better place for our next generations. May we also prioritize manufacturing, particularly for the medical industry, coming back to the US. A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

The powerful satellite, made to carry mobile communications data, is built on a modernized LM 2100 satellite body that has reprogrammable onboard processors, making it more flexible than previous generations of large satellites the Jefferson County-based company made. But as advanced as the LM 2100 is, it’s been four years since a private-sector company has ordered one, and it’s not clear when the next one will. The LM 2100 is the satellite body for several U.S. military satellites Lockheed Martin Space is building, but the global market large commercial communications satellites has gone cold. The communications industry is watching the rollout of 5G telecom networks on the ground while also sorting out what new satellite technologies it wants in orbit — whether to adopt smaller, cheaper and shorter-lived satellites that have grown more capable in recent years, stick with larger traditional communications satellites that last 15 years or more, or rely on a mixture of satellite types and ground networks to relay data, TV signals and other traffic. Companies worldwide are expected to order 14 commercial communications satellites this year, predicts Guy Beutelschies, Lockheed’s vice president for communications satellite solutions.A fraction of that number was ordered from satellite makers each of the past two years. The drop in business led to layoffs of thousands of workers between major commercial satellite builders, such as Westminster-based Maxar Technologies Inc., Germany’s Airbus Space & Defense, andThales Alenia, based in France and Italy. Lockheed Martin Space unveiled what’s now called the LM 2100 starting in 2014, after the business moved its commercial satellite manufacturing headquarters from Pennsylvania to its campus southwest of Denver. It landed three orders from international buyers, two from a Saudi Arabian media company and the JCSAT 17 satellite, which was the eighth Lockheed Martin built for Sky Perfect JSAT. All three of the satellites have launched. Lockheed Martin Corp. started construction in 2017 on a $350 million satellite factory, known as the Gateway Center. The LM 2100 is the core technology for the Nex Gen OPIR missile-detection satellites, GPS III-F series of global positioning satellites, and for other satellites the company is building for the U.S. military under contracts worth $690 million last year and billions of dollars in revenue over time. Rather than struggle with layoffs like its commercial satellite competitors, Lockheed Martin Space has been able to focus on military work. “We’ve got a robust backlog from our government customers,” Pettigrew said. “It’s a good position to be in.” Later this year, the company’s $350 million Gateway satellite factory is slated to open. The facility is designed to produce the LM 2100 and three smaller styles of satellites that Lockheed Martin Space will produce for military, civilian government agencies and the commercial satellite market. A Canadian Company Is Evaluating Sites To Build Electric Vehicles In The U.S. Vancouver-based ElectraMeccanica is planning to build a 200-employee electric-vehicle assembly facility in the United States that would pump out three-wheeled cars described as “sleek, maneuverable and environmentally friendly.”

Tom Stringer, head of BDO’s site selection and business incentives practice – which has been tapped to consult for the project – confirms Denver is one of seven sites being looked at for the plant. In addition to the Denver, other potential sites include:Phoenix; Raleigh-Durham; Orlando/Central Florida; Spartanburg, South Carolina;Nashville, Tennessee and Fort Worth, Texas. “We’re looking at multiple sites in all of these locations,” he says. Stringer says the most important consideration is going to be the talent pipeline. The company will also be evaluating a talent pool’s ability to grow, as it’s a unique sector: “It’s not quite automotive, it’s not quite aerospace, it’s a little combination of each,” Stringer says.“Finding the right location is the most A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

important thing, and then obviously obtaining that location at a justifiable cost is the balancing part of site selection,” he says. “Incentives are a part of that, but they are not the deciding part.” The company has been in touch with the “requisite economic development folks” surrounding possible incentives, Stringer says. The leading and backup locations will be announced by the third quarter of this year, according to the company. A press release describes what to expect. Specifically, it plans to begin production and delivery of “it’s flagship, single-seat, three wheeled SOLO EV during 2020” alongside its contract manufacturing partner, China’s Zongshen Industrial Group. Zongshen will continue to manufacture SOLO EVs abroad for the global market, while also supplying knock-down kits for assembly in the United States. The proposed new facility would also allow ElectraMeccanica to reduce or potentially eliminate tariffs, the company says. “This strategic initiative will not only allow us to limit uncertainties in the global supply chain, but also grow our talent pool of engineering resources and seize the tremendous market opportunities in the USA,” Paul Rivera, CEO of ElectraMeccanica, stated. The company plans to launch the vehicle mid-year, starting in the Los Angeles market. ElectraMeccanica recently disclosed revenue expectations of $140,000 to $160,000 for its fourth quarter. Survey Says: Additive Manufacturing on the Rise Essentium recently released the findings from independent global research on the current and future use of industrial 3D printing. Simply put, acceptance across all industries is growing. And the key to continued growth is crystal clear: manufacturers desire an open ecosystem.

Although closed systems have been in the norm across industrial additive manufacturing - often locking manufactures into one vendors’ hardware, processes and materials - survey results show that the vast majority of executives see openness as crucial to advancing 3D printing at scale. Manufacturers are now demanding open ecosystems to overcome system inflexibility and use the materials of their choice with 50% of respondents saying they need high quality and affordable materials to meet the growing demand for industrial 3D printed parts. While 85% of manufacturers reported that industrial-scale additive manufacturing has the potential to increase revenue for their business, 22% said vendor lock-in has hampered needed flexibility. An open additive ecosystem will see more partnerships focused on giving customers greater control of their innovation, more choice in materials and industrial-scale production at ground-breaking economics. “Being locked into proprietary solutions that limit flexibility and choice is no longer an option if 3D printing is to become a serious contender as an industrial process for end-use products,” says Essentium CEO and Co-

(303) 466-3777 foothillsmachinery.com founder Blake Teipel. “An open market focused on developing new materials and better and faster machines is the only way for manufacturers to unlock new applications and new business opportunities. With this approach, the future belongs to the customer, not to the OEM.” Fortunately, as technology obstacles around economics, scale, strength and speed of production dissipate, the number of manufacturers using 3D printing for full-scale production rather than just prototyping has almost doubled when compared to last year (40% in 2019; 21% in 2018). Additionally, two-thirds of companies reported they have more than doubled their use of industrial-scale AM in their manufacturing, and 47% are now using the technology for runs of thousands of printed parts, a jump of 17% compared to 2018. While reduced manufacturing costs remain a key driver for many manufacturers (58%), the need to improve customer response time is also fueling interest in additive technologies with 61% of respondents are adopting the technology to reduce lead times. Teipel tells IndustryWeek, “Manufacturers are realizing more value from their systems because of open architecture. When companies install a system and have the ability to use more materials, they can quickly realize more value from their hardware investment and have the opportunity to achieve scale,” he says. “ A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Lockheed Martin test-fires PrSM missile for second time Lockheed Martin has test-fired its long-range Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) for the second time at the US Army’s White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, US.

All objectives were achieved in the test following the inaugural flight of the missile conducted in December last year. The company tested the next-generation missile PrSM from its High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) launcher and flew a nominal trajectory approximately 180km to the target area. Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control Precision Fires and Combat Maneuver Systems vice-president Gaylia Campbell said: “Today’s flight test further demonstrated the reliability, precision and critical capabilities Lockheed Martin is building A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

“The missile performed exactly as expected and successfully engaged the target with pinpoint accuracy.” The missile test-firing was aimed at confirming its flight trajectory, range and accuracy from launch to warhead event, as well as warhead lethality, HIMARS launcher integration and overall missile performance. The PrSM is a next-generation precision-strike, surface-to-surface weapon system and will deliver improved capabilities to attack, neutralise, suppress and destroy targets at depth on the battlefield.

Ball Aerospace Drives New Global PollutionMonitoring Satellite Network A new satellite instrument made by Ball Aerospace & Technologies is expected to turn on in orbit in two weeks, starting a new monitoring network expected to change global understanding of air pollution. The Boulder-based company made the Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer, or GEMS, instrument, which launched Feb. 18 on a Korea Aerospace Research Institute satellite. It’s the first of three geostationary satellites instruments that are planned to collect hourly air pollution data from most of Asia and in the Pacific Ocean, most of North America and the Caribbean, and from Europe. Ball Aerospace, a division of global beverage packaging giant Ball Corp, made both the GEMS instrument for Korean researchers, to monitor Asia, and the Tropospheric Emissions: Monitoring of Pollution, or TEMPO, instrument for NASA and the Harvard Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, which will cover North

America. The third satellite, to monitor European air pollution, is being made by European manufacturers. Most air pollution data today is collected from ground stations. What satellite data is collected comes from orbiters that take daily readings each afternoon. Each of the satellites in the new, multinational network is designed to take hourly readings of pollution at various altitudes in the atmosphere. That will provide data from times of day and capturing atmospheric mixing factors that haven’t been available, said Dennis Nicks, program manager for Ball Aerospace. “If you’re always measuring at the same time, you’re limited in what you can see,” Nicks said. “You miss the dynamic and interesting part of air pollution.” The satellites are all designed to capture information on nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, ozone, aerosols and fine particulate pollutants. GEMS is expected to start going through in-orbit testing in spring — a process that could last six months.Without hiccups there could start to be GEMS data this year, said Jhoon Kim, ofYonsei University, Seoul, who’s the GEMS project’s principal research investigator. Having detailed data will give researchers the ability to examine what role in air pollution is played by factors such as morning rush hours in cities, the seasonal prevalence of lightning, or the time of day that farms apply fertilizers, said Kelly Chance, lead TEMPO researcher, from the Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. Ball finished building the TEMPO instrument in late 2018. NASA struck a deal to add TEMPO to a commercial communications satellite being built by Westminster-based Maxar Technologies Inc. that is expected to launch in mid-2022. Renting space on a commercial satellite as “hosted payload” is a first for NASA, which used the strategy to save money on launch costs. Ball won the contract for GEMS and TEMPO on the strength of its experience building similar ”hyperspectral sensing” instruments for the federal government’s National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration weather and atmospheric monitoring satellites dating back to the 1970s. The difference with the GEMS instrument and its network is that the satellites operate from a geostationary orbit 22,000 miles above the Northern Hemisphere, which allows it to continuously monitor that same region of the planet. To make instruments for a satellite operating so far from the planet requires making the sensors bigger, which adds to the complexity and the resources needed to complete the work, Nick said. “You need a bigger team,” he said. “It’s very hard and you need to

Recycling Metals, Conserving Resources, Since 1961 What’s My Job? Fifty years ago, in a café that did not employ a barista—and coffee was cheap—I’m convinced two colleagues on their lunchbreak were debating what the future of jobs would look like. “I bet one day robots will have their own employment agency,” one said to the other. Laughter ensued, and they returned to their jobs on the production line of a manufacturing plant. Well, it’s happened. Robots do have their own employment agency. In December of 2019, MusahiAI offered up its robots for hire to be paid either on an hourly rate or a task-completed salary rate. Robots wanting these jobs would need to be able to do strenuous and repetitive work. While today, robots across the U.S. are employed doing just this type of work, they have a career development trajectory that involves more advanced skills such as “thinking.” Through artificial intelligence and machine learning, robots will ultimately be able to figure out ways to improve whatever jobs they are given. Does this robot evolution threaten human evolution? It depends on which study you believe. A study by Oxford Economics predicts that manufacturing could lose 20 million jobs by 2030, making the sector 8.5% smaller than “if robots were not remaking the market.” A A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

McKinsey Institute study predicts that by 2030, 39 to 73 million jobs that exist today – one-third of the US workforce– will be automated. Then there is the study from theWorld Economic Forum which predicts that the 75 million jobs lost by 2022 due to “the technological advances of the fourth industrial revolution” will in fact be overshadowed by the 133 million new jobs created. What Skills Are Needed in the Future? One thing that everyone can agree on is that whatever jobs are available in the future, they will look different and require new skills. Is this a bad thing? Well, one viewpoint is that robots are freeing us from the drudgery of both harmful and repetitive tasks, allowing us to move higher up the value chain in the organization. Jobs that involve creative thinking and problem-solving are more valuable to a company and therefore pay more and are more secure in terms of long-term employment. But that might be a large leap forward. While many reports show that jobs that require less skills have been taken over by machines, there is debate as to the scale of this. A recent report by the Brookings

While these programs are successful, they are limited. Research done by Johann Fortwengel at King’s College London of the apprenticeship model in the US, England and Australia found that many small-tomedium-sized companies cannot either afford these programs or find them to be too complex. State and local workforce agencies are jumping in and trying to build out these programs in order to accommodate any size company. But on a policy level, it’s slow going. While the Department of Labor certifies these programs, often they are company-specific. “America lacks a national strategy that prioritizes youth apprenticeship as an effective talent pipeline to boost the sector’s competitiveness and spread economic opportunity across the country,” says Brent Parton of New America, a nonprofit public policy institute. Where Will Future Workers Come From? Putting all of this together, there are a lot of questions to be answered and policy choices to make. Will the U.S. adopt the German model which tests children at a

Many educational systems are already doing this in an effort to fill manufacturing jobs, but the larger question is how education, and vocational education will be viewed in the future. In an extreme view, robots will do all of the work, even what we consider service work today, and then how will people earn their keep? Political discussions are already underway about universal income and using social wealth funds to compensate for earned wages. “A social wealth fund would create a true ownership society, insuring the working populace against the rise of the robots by allowing each person to own a piece of those robots’ output,” explained Noah Smith, professor computer science and engineering at the University of Washington, in a Bloomberg op-ed. What humans will do for work, how we will perform our jobs and how we will be compensated is not something that will be solved anytime soon. So, it’s possible that in 2070, there will be two robots sitting in a café with a robot barista, drinking expensive coffee. One turns to the other and says, “Do you think we need to contact that human employment agency to find someone who can come up with new product lines?” Source: Adrienne Selko, Industry Week A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Collaboration

Quality, Reliability and Service

The company is collaborating with researchers from Purdue University to develop a new framework for modeling and simulating certain types of composite materials and structures. The advancements will be incorporated into existing AnalySwift software, named SwiftComp, and used by companies to provide accurate and efficient modeling of composites. “This is an outstanding recognition and validation of our technology,” said Allan Wood, president and CEO of AnalySwift. “NASA is going to be able to use the software as it designs devices and structures to help achieve success in space exploration, including deployable structures and living vessels used in a space environment.”

We are a full service job shop, providing as much or as little project involvement as required – from tool and die design to finishing and assembly.

Utah Company Creates ‘Isolation Chambers’ For Covid-19 Patients

Cliff Hokanson, Executive Vice President of HHI, “it was like, this is awesome.”

A Utah construction company claims they are the ones who created the isolation boxes being used to help treat patients infected with the coronavirus or COVID-19.

HHI created an 8 foot wide and 8 foot tall “Containerized Bio-Containment System” (CBCS) that’s 40 feet long with three rooms inside.

The Hokanson family has been running HHI Corporation for nearly 50 years, and for 47 years they’ve worked with the Federal Government, designing and fabricating for the military. HHI stands for honesty, hard work and innovation. “It’s about families, it’s about connections, it’s about surviving this world in the best way we can,” said Regina Hokanson, President of HHI Corporation. Hokanson said their partner, MRI, received orders from the State Department asking for a product that could help ship home U.S. citizens infected with Ebola, along with their nurses and doctors. The orders were given to MRI at midnight. HHI was called at 6 AM with six hours to put together plan. The original order for the first two “shipping containers” was in December 2014, with completion of the units in April 2015. The second order for another two units was in September 2018 with the units completed in February 2019. “A lot of miracles happened to get the box approved, and then when we saw it in action,” said A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

One room was created for doctors to enter, a middle door leads them to a room to “suit up,” before heading into the final room, where patients are treated. “Everything had to be contained and washed down,” Cliff said. “Even the light fixture needed to be wiped down chemically.” HHI invented special doors that could handle decompression on a plane — meaning, should a plane go down, no biological hazards would be released from the boxes. “Everyone on the airplane wouldn’t be contaminated with that,” Cliff said. Working with a tight deadline, the Hokansons said they had a three hour float allowance — a

typical business would want a few days, not hours. A new type of epoxy needed for the walls almost threw a wrench into the tight schedule. The chambers had to be able flex and move while shipping across the world on the airplanes, Cliff said. Most epoxy would break and become brittle, especially in the corners. “We actually had their scientist, the guy who mixes the chemical, out here while we were applying it,” Cliff said. The first time the new epoxy was applied, it didn’t work. Cliff said they had to have multiple truck drivers bring a new formula from Pittsburgh overnight because the epoxy couldn’t be flown across the country. “We’ve never seen people work that fast and get us answers,” Cliff said. Seeing two of the CBCSs used to help patients from the Diamond Princess Cruise in Japan made the hustle all worth it, the Hokansons said. “They can’t get home, but with this container, we can bring them home and get them the proper care that they need,” Cliff said. The other two containers built by HHI are believed to be in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Cliff said, helping patients infected with Ebola. By: Erin Cox

Businesses Learn How to WorkWith Hill Air Force Base Weber State University recently hosted an industry outreach day. The event was sponsored jointly by the Air Force Base’s 748th Supply Chain Management Group (SCMG) and the Governor’s Office of Economic Development’s Procurement

Technical Assistance Center (PTAC). More than 100 contractors interested in doing business with Hill Air Force Base participated. Hill Air Force Base supports small businesses in the community by offering competitive acquisitions. It draws on the capability and flexibility of small businesses for low quantity and high demand types of items in addition to the base’s regular recurring requirements. “Working these types of events is at the core of what SRM (Supplier Relationship Management) does,” said Orren J. Hirschi, Supplier Relationship Management Office, 748th SCMG. “It’s a great opportunity for us to showcase our mission and to reach out to industry, seeking their expertise in helping us solve some of the challenges that affect our supply chain.” Col. Kieran Keelty, commander of the 748th SCMG, started the event by informing attendees about the mission, challenges and opportunities available to contractors at Hill Air Force Base. Afterward, a question and answer discussion led to conversations about the aging weapon systems, the need for change, international impacts and the power of competition. Intermountain Rigging and HeavyHaul Your Experts In All Aspects of Logistics Management It’s our people and our equipment that differentiate Intermountain Rigging and HeavyHaul (IRH) from others in our industry”, says Mike McKnight, president with 36 years of tenure at the company. He adds, “Our goal is simple: to make your life better.” Mike makes a good point - hire the right people and provide them with the training to do their jobs well. Purchase best in class equipment so that your team is well armed to safely support your customers. All of this enters into the equation for a successful business. But what Mike doesn’t mention is that a leader and his or her team that values its employees and helps to establish the entity as a ‘great place to work’, where people want to stay, even for decades or their entire career, that too enters into the equation. And that is just what happens at IRH. Today, IRH specializes in all areas of equipment logistics management, including:

• Rigging and Millwright with Full Heavy Rigging • Asset Recovery • Heavy haul • Crating and Shrink-wrapping • Warehousing and Storage

When Mike joined the company in 1984, just a kid recently out of High School, owner Bill Bailey was running the business (called Intermountain Rigging and Transfer or IRT) as a small transportation company. “We had 3 to 5 people at the company back then, and I loved the idea of this type of business”, Mike says. Business grew, and the company expanded beyond transportation, providing more and more services for their customers. They also grew their team, hiring good people and providing training. “I learned early on that our most valuable asset would be our employees and working to make them happy and successful would be key to how successful our company would become”, Mike elaborates. It was during the early 1990s that the company had expanded its team to 28 employees and 4 full time rigging crews. The company saw mergers and acquisitions during the 1990s. In 1994, Steven Knight, owner of Knight Brothers LLC, purchased IRT and 4 years later, IRT purchased the heavy haul assets and employees of Savage Industries. With these acquisitions, Steven Knight, who remains owner today, renamed the company Intermountain Rigging & HeavyHaul, or IRH as its customers refer to it. Today, IRH employs a team of 110, with 70% out in the field supporting customers. “We are a company today with amazing moving capabilities – we can move, haul, and rig items from 1 pound to 1.5 million pounds all across North America”, Mike says. He adds, “We also offer crating and storage capabilities for our customers, which means we can support all aspects of a customers’ machinery and equipment logistics. That can even include custom fabrication and full installation services.”Whether it is one machine, complete manufacturing lines or entire fabrication facilities, IRH is uniquely positioned to support its customers. Mike previously mentioned that employees are one of IRH’s most valuable assets. “We have our annual Christmas party, and at the event, we give our employee awards for their years of service. Each year, we give out many 25, 30, and 35 year awards. And with the acquisition of Savage’s heavy haul assets, which traces back to the early 1900s, last year we gave out a 40 year anniversary award.” Asset recovery is a term you may not be familiar with if you aren’t in the utility industry. When IRH’s customers’ electrical equipment has reached the end of its useful life or is no longer needed in their ongoing operations, IRH Asset Recovery can recover the value of transformers of all sizes, breakers, switch gear, oil, raw materials, and more. Their crews move, transport, decommission, dismantle and dispose of their customers’ equipment to maximize your investment recovery and minimize environmental risk and operational disruption. IRH also offers crating, whether it is small boxes to large tanks, columns, drives and machinery. Their in-house crating crew will build the exact custom enclosure your project needs, and they can provide the necessary stamps to prepare their customers’ equipment for international shipping or even long-term storage. IRH has 3 locations throughout Utah, and they are equipped to offer warehousing and storage capabilities for their customers who need temporary holding or long-term specialized storage. Just listen to a few of IRH’s customers. I am confident you will be as impressed as I was when interviewing them. “IRH offers the safest, fastest and most skilled machinery moving for our company. We’ve worked with Mike McKnight and his team for decades now. They have the best equipment in the industry; they always have the perfect size forklift regardless of what equipment we are asking them to move, and their entire staff is extremely professional.

We’ve tried other riggers in the past. What we have gotten with them is limited equipment (usually oversized since they don’t have rigging equipment for a variety of sizes), and since their machinery is old, we’ll even see oil tracks when the job is done. With IRH, their teams are skilled, and many are employees who we’ve gotten to know over the years. I think they’ve cornered the market and retained all the best employees in the industry. When we buy a new machine from a dealer here in Salt Lake City, we always ask that they utilize IRH for our installation. Generally, we get IRH, but occasionally, the dealer selects another rigging company. IRH is competitively priced and just the best in the industry.” Clint, COO, Machine Shop in Salt Lake City, UT “I’ve known IRH probably for 15 years or more now. They are just outstanding and their pricing is very reasonable. They are additionally extremely focused on safety, so much so that I have learned better safety procedures from them. We have $1 million molding machines, including 64 presses that each weigh several tons, and we have complete confidence in the IRH team to support our moves and installations. We also entrust them with our Class 8 cleanroom equipment, which takes tools specific to a clean room installation. In fact, they have their own set of tools just for our clean rooms. I actually count IRH as one of my best vendors, period. They will move mountains for us, and they do this consistently. Our founder is a major contributor to the Leonardo Museum here in Salt Lake City. In preparation for their Flight Exhibit, they enlisted IRH to install a full size Boeing 707 as well as a C-131, a twin-engine military transport plane used in the mid-1950s.

“We use IRH both for rigging and crating. At our company, we build composite frames for airplanes and helicopters. Our customers ship these frames throughout the world, and they provide specifications for the crates the end products are shipped in, including a stamp documenting that the crate has been sprayed and heat treated. When we took on this project for our customer, we bid it out to a number of crating/rigging companies. In the end, we selected IRH for so many reasons. We also utilize IRH for their rigging capabilities. They move our heavy equipment, and when we bring in new equipment, IRH takes care of everything, from bringing the equipment into our facility, leveling and attaching it to the floor. Not only is their pricing competitive, but their customer service is outstanding. IRH has an excellent reputation and I rate them A+ as a vendor.” Gary, Supervisor Aircraft Engineering Company, Salt Lake City, UT “What separates IRH from others is their investment of time and money in safety! They provide superior training to their team, and they have a team with incredible longevity with IRH. With their continuous investment in equipment, IRH is able to provide the right equipment for every specific situation; one size doesn’t fit all. Not only can they crate, rig, and heavy haul our machines for our customers, but IRH can do the electrical installation, the foundation for the machine, and any modifications needed for the building. IRH supported us not too long ago with 2 incredibly large installations. One job took 7 of IRH’s semis and the other took 8 or 9.With these jobs, IRH was onsite or available for 1.5 months on one and 2.5 on the other.

The team at IRH is so well trained and professional, and their track record for us is impeccable. I don’t believe a poor performer lasts with IRH, if they are ever even hired. From Holly in the front office, to John in the warehouse, to Mike, the president of the company, the service is just amazing. We’ve had the opportunity to work with several of their rigging teams, and they are all outstanding. When I call to leave a message with them on weekends, I can’t believe that they answer my call!

To sum it up, the entire team at IRH is awesome – they do so many things to make our life easier and that is why they are our go-to team for handling the machinery we sell and service!” Clark, Owner Smith Machinery, Salt Lake City, UT

We have 5 divisions in various locations, and all the divisions count on IRH for rigging and hauling. They’ve even transported our equipment toTijuana, Mexico, and throughout California. They are just the best.” Jason, Facility Manager, Medical Manufacturer in Salt Lake City, UT

Xerox lines up US$24b M&A loan in pursuit of deal with HP Xerox Holdings has arranged a US$24 billion loan with a group of banks as it continues a pursuit of HP Inc. It's the largest-ever bridge loan in the technology sector, surpassing International Business Machines Corp's US$20 billion facility in 2018 for its acquisition of Red Hat, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The rankings exclude the US$51.2 billion bridge loan, which was part of a larger US$100 billion debt financing for the failed Broadcom Inc takeover of Qualcomm Inc. The deal was blocked by US President Donald Trump. The Xerox bridge loan is also the first jumbo acquisition financing to emerge in the investment-grade loan market this year, which will be welcome news to banks hoping for more merger activity in 2020 after the pipeline dwindled last year. The debt pledge is intended "to remove any doubt" about Xerox's ability to raise financing, according to a public letter sent on Monday from Xerox chief executive officer John Visentin to HP's board of directors.

The letter referenced conversations with HP's largest shareholders that revealed HP, based in Palo Alto, California, and its advisers had questioned Xerox's ability to raise the money needed to finance the acquisition. Connecticut-based Xerox initially lined up financing from Citigroup in November, Bloomberg reported. But HP rejected the initial offer saying the price was too low. The computer company also declined Xerox's request to open its financial books and questioned whether the smaller suitor could raise the funding. Xerox, known for making copier machines, became a fallen angel in 2018 after both S&P and Moody's downgraded the company to high-yield amid challenges in the sector and falling revenue. Personal computer maker HP is rated Baa2 by Moody's and BBB by S&P. Xerox last raised a US$2.5 billion bridge loan in 2018 for its purchase of Japan’s Fujifilm with a margin of Libor plus 1.375 per cent. It carried higher ratings of Baa3 from Moody’s and BBB- from S&P at the time. “Though Xerox’s assertion that the combined company is expected to have an investment grade credit rating may remain in question, funding should no longer be a concern following US$24 billion in binding financing commitments,” Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Robert Schiffman wrote on Monday.

They Went Off the Grid. They Came Back to the Coronavirus. Every time Zach Edler sets out on a rafting trip — out on the water for days, away from phones, an internet connection and the rest of the world — the question comes up. “ S o m e b o dy wo u l d always joke and say, ‘What if we come back to a world where nothing is the same?’” Mr. Edler told me recently. “Of course, it never happens. Except for this time. This time it did.”

Blane, who worked for a rafting company out of Flagstaff, Ariz. He had one question: Have you been in contact with the outside world? They hadn’t. Aside from a few oneway text messages sent to family on a satellite phone, the friends hadn’t heard anything in more than three weeks. No cell service. No news. Not even a passing dispatch from fellow travelers. “He gave us a look, sighed, and then launched into it,” Mr. Edler said. Since they’d left, the coronavirus exploded in the United States and around the world, he told the group. Italy was under lockdown. The stock market was plummeting. Professional sports were suspended. Many schools were closed indefinitely. Infections were growing exponentially. Tom Hanks had it.

On Feb. 19, Mr. Edler, 27, and more than a dozen others set out for a 25-day adventure: rafting the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon — a trip so coveted it requires a permit won through a lottery. When they left, President Trump had recently granted clemency to Rod Blagojevich, the disgraced former Illinois governor, and Bernie Sanders had a double-digit polling lead heading into that night’s Democratic debate in Las Vegas. Cases of the coronavirus were showing signs of decline in mainland China and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued its first Level 1 travel notices — “practice usual precautions” for travelers heading to Hong Kong and Japan.

“Half of us thought he was joking,” Mr. Edler said. “It’s like, here’s an old river guide pulling our leg. I mean, I’ve heard some pretty big tales out on the river.”

By last Saturday, March 14, as they took the last paddle strokes of their journey, Mr. Edler and his friends were some of the last people on the planet unaware that the novel coronavirus had exploded into a once-in-a-generation pandemic, setting off a global health and economic crisis and shutting down large parts of American life. In moments, the man waving to them from the banks of the river would tell them that the world they were returning to looked vastly different.

A few of the rafters joked that they should just turn around and do the trip again. Somebody quipped that staying in the canyon was the safest course of action.

As they pulled their rafts out of the Colorado, they were met by a man named A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Others in the group weren’t so sure. “I think the girls believed it right away,” said Sarah Knaack, a nurse. “He said it in this real ominous way but then he just walked away to see about lunch and we were left nervously joking with ourselves totally unsure what was going on.”

Mason Thomas, 29, said he’d been monitoring the spread of the virus before he left. “The last thing I thought before I got into the canyon was: ‘Well, I can’t do anything about it. Maybe it won’t be there when I get back,’” he said. “I

figured if it was bad maybe we’d just all be washing our hands even more or something more serious. But not this.” For the rest of us who’ve followed the news of the pandemic as it’s swept across the globe, the experience is like tracking a hurricane and bracing for landfall. There’s a feeling of powerlessness accompanied by anxiety that ratchets up day by day. For the rafters, that stress and confusion and helplessness was compressed into an instant — and in a way, somehow both more and less intense. It’s left me wondering, if given the chance, would I trade places?

WE OFFER WORLD CLASS THREAD ROLLING CABABILITIES YOU CANNOT FIND ELSEWHERE

After they got out of the river on Saturday, the group packed up their rafts and gear quietly and got in their vans to drive out. Purposely, they kept the radio off, wanting to extend the blissful ignorance of the trip a little bit longer. Ninety minutes later, they picked up a cell signal. That’s when the texts poured in.

“The first one was from my mom,” Mr.Thomas said. “It was like, ‘You need to text me the second you get this. The world is going crazy.’ She’s immunocompromised so I was definitely worried.” Another rafter’s family texted that the supermarket shelves in California were bare and urged the group to stock up on rice, beans, dog food and toilet paper. “We’re sitting here trying to piece the world together,” Mr.Thomas said. “What does a toilet paper shortage mean? Why are they out of toilet paper?” “It was this feeling of disbelief,” Ms. Knaack added. “It’s like, ‘How’d we go from paradise to hoarding rice and beans?’” Another rafter searched Amazon by phone for toilet paper and saw that it wasn’t available. “That was a moment where it felt pretty real,” she said. The group stopped at an In-N-Out Burger in Kingman, Ariz., and called family members. “It’s just like this whirlwind of information,” Mr. Edler said. “You’re overwhelmed being in public for the first time and then you have this virus to think about. I’m standing in line for a burger and looking around thinking, ‘So, is it here right now?’” Huddled in an Arizona hotel Saturday night, the group tried to hang on to the last hours of the vacation. Most didn’t look at the news, hanging out with one another instead. But reality crept in. “The lady at the hotel was like,‘We have toilet paper; just don’t steal it.’ And the TV was showing some sports game from the ’80s or something and it was this reminder that,‘Oh, everything’s canceled,’” Ms. Knaack said. Re-entry has proved surreal for the rafters. When Mr. Edler went to pick up his mail, he discovered that most places besides the post office were closed. The supermarket was mostly out of meat. Since he’s a raft guide and part-time elementary-school teacher, his summer guiding and fall teaching plans are up in the air. Ms. Knaack is preparing to head back into a health care system strained by the epidemic. “I suppose it’s good that I got a vacation in,” she said. Mr. Thomas, now back in California, continues to worry about the

I’d really love to be back in that canyon right now.” (Shortly after our interview, Mr. Thomas texted me with a request: “Forgot to mention this, but my river name is One Chain. Real Estate costs are the second or third largest line item for most companies.Things to consider: First, talk to your insurance provider to see what coverage you have. Business interruption insurance might be a possibility if you have it. We asked commercial insurance folks if it would cover the current situation, and the answer is, it depends. Some policies clearly exclude pandemics, others don’t. Second, call your property manager/building owner and tell them what position you are in. Communication is key.You aren’t the only one. The property managers we have discussed this with are busy fielding these exact issues and concerns. Let them know your needs and your specific request. Some owners are being flexible, some aren’t, and many in between. They need details to figure out how to best work with you. Third, look into SBA disaster recovery loans, open to companies with fewer than 500 employees.

Finally, if changes in your business aren’t temporary, and you need to reduce your real estate footprint, here are a few options: • Facility assessment -- existing space functionality -- what do you have and what do you need • Recast your lease: This will take some time to work through with the landlord. Figuring out the best win/win is a process. Committing to more term is likely part of the equation. • Consider subleasing all or a portion of your space: We don’t know how deep this slowdown will go just yet, subleasing is about cutting losses, get aggressive to move the space quicker.
