This is officially graduation season, and it is such an extraordinarily proud time for the graduate as well as his family and loved ones. My family and I just returned from Austin celebrating my son’s graduation. It was a beautiful memory. Education isn’t just about earning a higher-level degree. It is about furthering one’s education so that one can have a meaningful set of skills that will facilitate the potential to make an ‘honest wage’ that can support a family in the future. We just went through a house move. I am always eager to leave one house and enter a new chapter in my life, though I admit I find the actual moving experience as deplorable as the next person. Our moving company had earned the highest marks on Yelp, and true to their reviews, the young men who moved us were professional, polite, on-time and hard working. As they moved many of our belongings into the new house, I noticed boxes of magazines in the garage – they were the A2Z Manufacturing magazines we publish. I asked the young movers if they had ever thought about machining or manufacturing in general, as a career choice. The team had been busy packing and moving us for the past 5 hours, and it was a grueling process in the heat that can often come early in Arizona. I handed them each magazines, and suggested that there were opportunities for Apprenticeships – I know these well as I participate in the Arizona Precision Manufacturing Apprenticeship program. When my partner suggested that they could learn a highly skilled trade that wouldn’t require the strenuous activity inherent in moving, that they could begin working in a machine shop, being mentored by a Journeyman caliber machinist, while attending school part time, the 3 seemed interested.Then, when we mentioned that experienced machinists could earn upwards of $30 per hour, it seems as if we caught the attention of the 3 movers.

Deloitte and Touche conducted a study just this year on the public’s view of US manufacturing. The findings show a true dichotomy in our beliefs. First the good news, we believe manufacturing is important to America’s economic prosperity (83%) and 88% of us believe manufacturing requires high technical skills. When it comes to actually recommending manufacturing as a career, Deloitte’s study depicts a very different picture. 70% feel manufacturing isn’t a strong career path, and 1/3 of Americans would not recommend manufacturing to their children. Those familiar with manufacturing (often in the industry) are 2X as likely to encourage their children to pursue a career in manufacturing. What does this mean to us in manufacturing? I feel that we must all be advocates of the industry; we should be educators of the industry whenever possible.Take the 3 young movers – I feel that their lives will be much richer and rewarding if they pursue the trade of manufacturing. They will, without doubt, enjoy a higher standard of living, and they will not have to leave a trade in the next decade because their backs have given out. In closing, I ask that you be active in promoting manufacturing - find opportunities to share your knowledge. We need young talent to join the industry. As a second-generation Phoenician, he is a loyal fan of most things Arizona, including: Diamondbacks, Cardinals, Suns, and Arizona State University (ASU). Sean went to Glendale Community College where he studied psychology. He began his career as a Paperboy at the age of 13. High-Dollar Acquisitions,Tech Sector Helped Utah’s EconomyThrive in 2016 If the laundry list of accolades and awards lauding Utah’s red-hot economy and business-friendly environment weren’t convincing enough, a new report has the data to back it up. MountainWest Capital Network released its 22nd annual Deal Flow Report Friday, showing in black and white what a year companies in Utah really had. And it was a good one: funding for deals made in 2016 totaled $19 billion, nearly twice 2015’s $10 billion. The total number accounts for mergers and acquisitions, private placements and public offerings. “Utah continues to receive national recognition for its success in being a well-run state that’s conducive to business,” said Quinton Stephens, MCWN Deal Flow Chair, who presented the report.
However, even besides these unusually large deals, the year was good for Utah, Stephens said. “Even if you were to take those out, I think the total number is still ahead of last year, even if the total number of deals is lower,” Stephens said. And the number of deals that make up that $19 billion is almost 20 percent lower than the year before—in 2015, there were 524 total deals made, but there were only 423 in 2016. “In this case, there were a few really large deals that drove the amount really high,” said Stephens. Large acquisitions deals aside, one of the continued drivers of Utah’s success was in the tech sector. Technology and software deals made up the largest share in terms of the number of deals made—196 deals in 2016, up from 151 in 2015. Katie Chandler, MWCN Deal Flow Vice Chair, said the booming tech sector is a strong economic driver for many reasons, but one of them is because, in that industry, industry tends to grow exponentially. “[The tech sector] is going to continue to grow, because it just breeds itself,” she said. “We see a lot of people leave one tech company and found another one—serial entrepreneurs.” The full report, which contains an accounting of each of the 423 deals made in 2016, is available for download at http://www.mwcn.org/deal-flow/. While the report is strictly a review of deals already made and doesn’t attempt to make any guesses about what 2017 holds, Stephens says from what he can tell, the outlook is good.

Victory in OSHA’s N e w T h i r d Pa r t y Walkthrough Policy In a significant victory for One Voice members, on April 25, 2017, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued a statement overturning an Obama-era Letter of Interpretation supported by national unions allowing third parties to attend OSHA inspection walk-throughs. The original 2013 OSHA letter stated that a union official may act as the employee representative during an OSHA walk-through at a non-union plant, representing a shift from the traditional definition of “employee representative.” This position made the OSHA inspection process more problematic and troublesome for the employer, as well as allowing union organizers an important means of access during an organizing campaign. One Voice members are still advised to consult their counsel or contact NTMA or PMA for advice upon OSHA inspection requests. This action does represent a major victory as many employees raised concerns over allowing a third party not duly selected to represent their interests speaking on their behalf and disrupting operations and the employer-employee relationship. Colorado Manufacturer To Build 205-Job Plant In North Carolina It’s official: Colorado-based Prescient Co. Inc. is moving forward with a 205-job, $15 million plant project in North Carolina. Arvada-based Prescient, founded in 2012, uses software to design multiunit buildings for apartments, student housing and the senior living and hospitality segments of up to about 14 stories. Prescient then manufactures the parts for the structures.

Ball Aerospace expanding in Colorado Ball Corp. is expanding its Aerospace Manufacturing Center in Westminster.

In a groundbreaking, officials at Colorado-based Ball and state officials celebrated the planned 145,000-square-foot expansion that’s expected to be completed in spring 2019. Ball said the original facility, which includes design facilities, product manufacturing, test ranges and administrative space, was built in the 1980s and was expanded by 60,000 square feet in 2006. The company said the expansion was necessary “in order to keep pace with projected growth and meet the needs of the customers we serve every day,” said John Hayes, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Ball Corp., in a statement. Quality Assurance is a critical and integral part of operations at Machinists Inc. Heading up the department is Rick Bradbury, Director of Quality. With a bachelor of science in Total Quality, his master in business administration and 20+ years of experience, Rick maintains a team of highly skilled inspectors and technicians who administrate all elements of the Quality Management System (QMS) at Machinists Inc. Mr. Bradbury actively maintains oversight and involvement with Model Based and Conventional inspection methods at all plant locations. Rick says; “we combine both modern and conventional inspection equipment to

The system employs three integrated cameras simultaneously to verify probe-tip position. Bradbury explains; “These systems work optically. They triangulate probe-tip position using a minimum of 9 infrared strobe lights and 3 cameras, each tracking the
probe-tip at over 1000 times per second. Additionally, it has a dynamic reference system capability which is a whole different approach and gives MI a real capability / capacity edge, particularly for model based inspections.” In short, this brief interview with Mr. Bradbury was a real eye opener. Each micro and tiny home takes four to eight weeks to construct, and Micro Homes has the ability to work on four at a time. If the house is built on a trailer, Micro Homes purchases the trailer from suppliers in the region as a construction platform. Because these homes are portable, they must be able to withstand wind gusts as they travel 60 miles per hour on the highway. “They are very structurally sound,” Scott says. But to attract a buyer, Scott knows they must be more than sound. They have to be “real cute.” An average micro home is 900 square feet and costs $120 to $150 per square foot. “We have to give a buyer a bath/shower, washer, dryer, vanity, and linen closet in 40 square feet,” says Scott. “It has to be extremely ergonomic and efficient.”
Founder Jamon Scott Brings The Big Idea Of Tiny Houses To Utah And The Rocky Mountain Region Founder Jamon Scott brings the big idea of tiny houses to Utah and the Rocky Mountain region. The best ideas often come after a good meal. At least that’s the experience of tiny and micro homes manufacturer, Jamon Scott. Several months ago, Scott’s daughter tried to rush through their dinner together so she had time to sit down and watch her favorite reality show. “I had no idea what she wanted to watch,” Scott says. “I thought it might be another survival show or someone trying to win a bachelor. But my daughter promised I’d like this reality show.”Not only did Scott like the show, an HGTV show on tiny houses, it changed the direction of his professional and personal life. “On the way home from dinner, I looked at my wife and said, ‘You know, honey. . .’ and she said to not even think about it.” But he didn’t stop thinking about it and, a year later, Scott and his wife are building their own tiny house and working to build Micro Homes of America with their partners. Within the industry, wording is important. A tiny house is portable and is built on wheels for the purpose of being movable. A micro home does not include a transport system and is more permanent. Whether micro or tiny, Micro Homes of America plans to place up to 24 homes this year. “That’s where we are aiming,” Scott says. “We would like to be able to build four a month.” A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Challenges: Zoning. In the end, Scott can only build them as quickly as Utah can find a place to put them. Though HGTV makes tiny houses seem modern and fun, city and county codes are just now beginning to allow them “The challenge in Utah is where to put them,” Scott admits. “But it’s changing. Washington County changed their rules last fall. They were followed by Pleasant Grove and other Utah County communities. Even so, it’s still a big problem for us in the state.” One of Scott’s competitors has built 48 tiny homes in 12 months. Only three of the 48 stayed in Utah. The cost of customization is another challenge. A tiny or micro home can cost $70,000 and buyers are balking at the price tag. “We can get prices down if we can come up with a combination of mass producing 70 percent of the home and only customizing 30 percent,” Scott says. “The high price comes from customizing each and every home.”Source: Utah MEP, By Alicia Cunningham

Operations Manager Frank Lewis says, “We communicate extensively with our customers to ensure that we can meet our customers’ delivery and quality metrics.” He continued, “Prior to getting a purchase order from our customers, we have discussions regarding their requirements and their delivery schedules. We reach agreement prior to accepting a purchase order — this allows us to provide outstanding quality and on-time delivery.” Jon Page, a mechanical engineering professional, founded the ISO 9001:2008 certified company nearly 20 years ago. Jon was raised by a family of entrepreneurs, and had spent a number of years employed in the medical industry as a design engineer. When Jon made the decision to launch his own business, designing and manufacturing medical test equipment and parts, he opened for business in his garage. Today, AMT is well versed in designing and machining complex parts and equally proficient at medical clean room automated assembly equipment and medical product development. They have expertise with medical disposables and assembly fixtures, laser-etching multi axis positioning systems with onboard vision systems, pressure testers, dental paste dispensing and packaging equipment, ambulatory infusion pumps, to name just a few of their products.They additionally have been awarded patents on their syringe infusers, their multidose syringe mechanisms, and their auto injection syringe devices. Though the majority of AMT’s customers hail from the medical industry, including such companies as BDC Labs, Cardio Optics, Medtronic Navigation, Baxter Medical Products, Phillips Medisize, the University of Colorado Health Science Center and Covidien, the company also machines parts for the aerospace industry, with customers including Ball Aerospace and Bandit/Idex Corp. Frank says, “About half of our employees came to AMT with little or no machining background. Jon mentored each of them, and when superior people come to work at AMT, they stay.” Frank says that the average tenure for employees is 8 years. AMT doesn’t have a sales force. often earn new customers who come to us with difficult jobs that others ‘no bid’. Our extensive experience with CAD design and programming allows us to assist our customers in the design of their fixtures.” AMT has a somewhat unusual approach to its business growth. Frank says, “We are very careful about growth — we are concerned about our superior employees being secure in their positions.We don’t believe in staffing up and down; rather we plan for controlled growth. Jon and I share in this philosophy, and I believe it has helped us to retain the team that we have today.” He added, “It is also a formula for repeat loyal customers.” AMT has a large number of long-term customers who they align their business to. “Our customer requirements dictate even the types of machines we purchase”, Frank says. AMT doesn’t purchase one machine tool brand as often happens in a machine shop. “We’ve got Haas, Mori Seiki, Sharp, and Southwestern Industries machine tools in our shop”, Frank elaborates. Months ago, an older machine that was causing headaches with extensive repairs and down time forced the AMT team to look for a new machine to replace the ailing one. Frank says, “Jon knew about Foothills Machinery and he contacted them to allow them to bid
on our new machine tool purchase.” After careful evaluation, AMT purchased the Takumi VC0852, a threeaxis CNC machine that is equipped with the FANUC 0i-MF control. The EP Systems project will create up to 128 jobs over the next seven years at its new facility near the Logan-Cache Airport. EP Systems may earn up to 20 percent of the new state taxes it will pay over the seven-year life of the agreement in the form of a post-performance EDTIF tax credit rebate. As part of the contract with EP Systems, the GOED Board of Directors has approved a post-performance tax credit rebate not to exceed $1,674,781. Each year as EP Systems meets the criteria in its contract with the state, it will earn a portion of the total tax credit rebate.

Lockheed says Saudi Arabia intends to spend $28 billion on its products, including integrated air and missile defense systems, aerostats, multi-mission surface combatant ships, radars, surveillance systems, tactical aircraft and helicopters. Lockheed and Saudi Technology Development and Investment Company (Taqnia) have agreed to form a joint venture to build 150 Sikorsky S-70 Black Hawk helicopters locally for the Saudi government. Riyadh also has expressed interest in Lockheed’s Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (Thaad) anti-ballistic missile system, which comes with Raytheon’s 621-mi. Senate Confirms U.S. Trade Representative Last month, after numerous delays, the Senate confirmed President Trump’s pick, Robert Lighthizer, as U.S. Trade Representative. Environmental Concerns Driving Manufacturers to Make Changes When considering the dismal state of our state’s air quality, many people are quick to point fingers. Some blame the refineries, some blame traffic, some blame our geography, but the truth is that all of these factors shoulder the blame. The pie is cut thusly: 39 percent of Wasatch Front pollution comes from area pollutants, 48 percent from mobile and 13 percent from point pollutants (like refineries.) For some in the manufacturing community, this can be a sore spot. On a morning in the downtown Salt Lake City Holland & Hart offices, a group of eleven manufacturing professionals gathered at the annual Utah Business Manufacturing roundtable to talk about the state of their industry, and what growth areas, opportunities and challenges make up the manufacturing landscape. Environmental concerns, said Joe Wizom, president and CEO of Fetzer, Inc., are at the front of mind for smaller A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

“One of the challenges as a small business that we run into is that there’s a heightened sensitivity to the environment in the state of Utah. I believe everyone lumps all of manufacturing into the negative end of the spectrum on our effects on the environment,” said Wixom. “It is creating, for us, in the company, a substantial overhead cost to manage and report on something that is so minimal on the grand spectrum of what is effecting the environment in the state of Utah, that it’s a challenge for us.” While Wixom stressed that nobody in manufacturing is trying to “hide anything behind the curtain,” he said that the current state of environmental sensitivity is difficult when other states are trying to compete with Utah by luring manufacturers away from the state. “It’s hard when you see states that are out there, that are offering a lower tax structure and incentives because they want to diversify their economy.They want to be the next Utah,” he continued. “So they’re going and they’re offering these attractive opportunities in an environment that—I don’t want to say is less sensitive to the environment, per se … We show what we are. The staff and the effort that we have to do to stay in the good graces of the state of Utah and the general public is a challenge. It’s a cost that drives the expense and the cost of the product that we offer to the point where it’s not palatable to the customer.”
The current environmentally conscious climate is driving companies to take a look at their waste and recycling programs, although Todd Bingham, president of the Utah Manufacturer’s Association, says that sometimes figuring those programs out is also a difficulty for manufacturers when recycling resources become scarcer, or when recycling facilities close or cannot handle the load. “One of the things that we’re seeing right now is we know all of our companies are doing everything they can to reduce their footprint. I’ll give you one example: many of our facilities are zero-waste facilities. Right now, a lot of our companies are sending recycled material to certain facilities that are along the Wasatch Front— but one of those facilities is about to close down … It’s interesting to see how, as an industry, we’ll deal with that and not have to dump all of that in a landfill,” he said. Still, for those companies who manage to find a way to become more environmentally friendly, the opportunities to recruit based on that platform are ripe for the taking, said Mark Jenkins, CEO of Petersen, Inc.

“About the workforce side, often we don’t say enough about what our companies are doing environmentally.We don’t say what you’re doing beyond to control your footprint,” he said. “From a recruiting standpoint, that’s a necessity these days,” continued Dave Frick,VP of Operations forVarex Imaging, who added that, when Varex expanded, they became 100 percent LEED Gold certified, and reduced the amount of power the building was drawing, even down to individual cubicles. “The students coming out of college, use that as a factor in deciding what company they want to work for. “We get their attention by showing how much is happening, and then, appeal to them to reevaluate,” Moser explains. “We have a free online ‘Total Cost of Ownership Estimator’ tool, which helps them go beyond their historical sourcing practices.” For companies, that’s always started with price, as in: “Where can I find acceptably competent workers at the lowest possible wage?” But Moser’s tool incorporates other elements that often add up to 15 to 20 percent of additional costs to send jobs offshore, like “carrying costs of inventory, travel costs, intellectual property risk, and the impact on innovation when you separate engineering from manufacturing (or bring them back together), the lost orders and lost customers when you have volatility in demand and you stock out because you have a two- to three-month delivery where you wouldn’t have stocked out if you had a two- or three-week delivery because you have a local source or make it in your own factory here.”

Why The U.S. Is Now Winning The Fight To Keep Manufacturing Jobs Onshore New research from the Reshoring Initiative confirms what many have been speculating: Rising costs for overseas labor and services and important brand considerations are now compelling U.S. companies to reshore jobs or create new jobs domestically. From the new report: “In 2014 and 2015 parity was reached between offshoring and returning jobs, indicating that the net bleeding of manufacturing jobs to offshore had stopped. As of 2016, for the first time, probably since the 1970s, there was a net positive gain in U.S. jobs. The U.S. has gone from losing about 220,000 manufacturing jobs per year at the beginning of the last decade, to adding 30,000 jobs in 2016. Measured by our trade deficit, of about $500 billion/year, there are still 3 to 4 million U.S. manufacturing jobs offshore at current levels of U.S. productivity, representing a huge potential for U.S. economic growth.” As Harry Moser, founder of the Reshoring Initiative, says in the new report, “The tide has turned.” For American manufacturers, it may now make economic sense to manufacture in the U.S. where it didn’t before. Moser has been documenting trends in manufacturing economics for several years. His contribution has been to provide manufacturers data, to one, help them understand trends (such as: “What industries and companies are reshoring jobs, and why?”), and reevaluate their own offshoring decisions. As he began running the numbers, what he suspected might happen, in fact did. “When companies do the analysis, in some cases -- not all cases -- it makes sense to bring the work back,” Moser says. “To quantify that a bit, we took the first batch of cases we had with China versus the U.S., and in 5 percent of the cases that the company had done a cost analysis, the U.S. had the lowest price. But based on a total-cost analysis, the U.S. won 53 percent of the time, just by using the correct metrics.” Is the number improving, given rising wages in China and other historically low-wage markets? “We believe it is,” Moser answers. “One the one hand, Chinese wages have been going up 13 to 15 percent per year. On the other side of that, the Chinese are investing more in automation and productivity than we are, so their productivity rate has been rising much faster than ours has been, and that counteracts some of that wage increase.” The new data seem to confirm the trend. Moser’s analytics also coincide with a profound change in the how U.S. companies are building brands.Today, offshoring jobs and service contracts in pursuit of the lowest cost provider is out of favor, inconsistent with a new consumer ethos that favors quality and value -- often the added value of creating homegrown jobs. Hap Klopp, founder ofThe North Face, provides an elegant explanation as to why companies reach a similar conclusion as those using Moser’s total cost of ownership tool: “The mistake the people in the apparel business are making right now is that they think it’s a race to the bottom because of price, and everyone’s trying to take ‘make’ out of the product. The real differentiation (for brands) is making something of value. If you’re not afraid of making the best, you’ll stand out from the crowd. 80 percent of the crowd are just trying to make something cheap, and the reality is that the cost of making these products at a distance is going up and up and up. The labor costs in China, in India, and in other places is going up much faster than in the U.S., and in eight or nine years the labor costs will be the same. Then the long lead times of getting products from Asia are really going to be a hindrance. There’s going to be more close-tohome product manufactured, and addition to that, ‘value’ is going to take over. And a brand is shorthand for value.”

The rocket took off at 7:21 p.m. from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The launch took Inmarsat-5 Flight 4, part of the company’s Global Xpress network, to geostationary transfer orbit, and spacecraft separation occurred at 7:54 p.m. At that point, Boeing and Inmarsat were to take control of the spacecraft to maneuver it into geostationary orbit. There, it will deploy its five solar arrays, made of ultra-triple junction gallium arsenide, and its reflectors before beginning payload testing. Like the three prior Inmarsat satellites, this one was built by Boeing in El Segundo, California, and should last for 15 years.The previous three were launched from Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Global Express is the first Ka-band globally available high-speed mobile broadband service.Through the 6,100-kg (13,450-lb.) spacecraft, which features 89 fixed spot beams and six steerable spot beams, Inmarsat offers a wide range of services.That includes GX Aviation for broadband service on airline flights, Jet ConneX for the business aviation market, and services for the U.S. military, foreign governments, the global shipping industry and other industries.The constellation entered service in December 2015, and this fourth satellite will add more capacity to the network and in-orbit redundancy.

that the company endeavored to do nearly everything needed to manufacture a part in-house. Today, they offer CNC machining, welding, waterjet cutting, heat-treating, wire and sinker EDM, black oxide, and grinding, all done in house. Literally, they outsource only plating and painting, and occasionally count on outside shops to help them with parts that require Blanchard grinding and screw machine.

“We are always looking to take our business to the next level,” Jason says. “It’s never really business as usual for us. We make great products, have the best machine tool technology, and take great care of our customers. That is what Mountain View Machine is all about.” The management team at MVM&W, consisting of Jason Crook, his son Rob, and Cliff Abbott, all recognize that they must continuously invest in new technology if they want to retain their valuable customers and grow the business. In just the last couple of years, they purchased a Romi 620 Lathe, which enabled them the ability to offer a bigger spindle bore, and the Mazak Nexus VCN-530CII. Just months ago, they invested in their first 5-axis machine, a Mazak VTC 800/30SR. “We had some customers asking us to do some jobs that required 5-axis machining, and until we purchased our machine, they were taking this work out of state.” Cliff added, “In the few months that we have been running the VTC 800 / 30SR, we’ve already acquired some new customers.”

Smith Machinery is the dealer for the Mazak machine tool line, amongst other fine machine tool lines they carry. David Soares, Sales Engineer for Smith Machinery, supports the team at MVM&W. David says, “The VERTICAL TRAVELING COLUMN (VTC) 800/30 SR Vertical Machining Center features a high speed spindle, swivel spindle head (B-axis), full traveling column design and fixed table for machining of extremely long and heavy work pieces. The swivel head delivers improved accuracy and repeatability due to the backlash free design, which allows the machining of complex features and contours. These features offer excellent machining capacity for a large variety of work pieces.” He continued, “Perhaps most importantly, a significant reduction of machining processes and increased productivity can be realized thanks to the additional axis, and when combined with a rotary table, full 5-axis simultaneous machining is possible. The machine also delivers fast rapid traverse rates to reduce non-cut times.” Many machine shops purchase 5-axis machines, but a significantly smaller number utilize the machine’s full 5-axis capabilities. David says that Rob Crook is so gifted a machinist that he was able to quickly utilize the machine, capitalizing on its full 5 axis capabilities. Rob worked closely with Gibbs and Mazak to perfect the post processor for MVM&W’s specific requirements. Jason says that he values the fact that the new Mazak machine gives the
company a longerY travel coupled with true 5-axis capabilities. With the new Mazak, MVM&W can manufacturer much larger parts, effectively double the size that they could previously machine (118 in x 31.5 in y and 33.86 in z). Early results have been dramatic. On one part that previously required 5 set-ups, with their new 5-axis Mazak, there are now just 2 set-ups required. On a part that previously took 3 weeks, it is now finished in 3 days! Rob says, “When we made the decision to purchase a 5-axis machine, we looked at different Mazak models. Not only do we think Mazak is an exceptional machine builder, we additionally value the support and expertise we get from Smith Machinery.” Jason added, “We selected the Mazak VTC 800/30SR for the horsepower, the size, and the versatility.” Clark Smith feels the VTC800/30SR is “the perfect job shop machine, because it’s so versatile. A job shop will have all the advantages of 5-axis capability; you’ll have fewer set-ups, it can hit 5 sides of a part, also it can handle small parts as well as parts up to 118” long and 31’ wide, the 18,000 RPM spindle is super-efficient, and the footprint is significantly smaller than typical machine designs with a moving table with the same travels. It can do simple 3-axis flat plate work and also full 5-axis simultaneous machining. The 737 MAX 9 is the second member of Boeing’s 737 MAX family, with a maximum capacity of 220 passengers and a range of 3,515nm. The airplane now begins system checks, fueling, and engine runs on the flight line. Colorado’s Aerospace Industry:GOING THE DISTANCE It has become a mantra among those leading America through the Digital Age that technology is shrinking the world – that the Internet, social media, satellite communications and other advancements are connecting people regardless of geography, taking down barriers and erasing distances before our very eyes. And while that may be true, in Colorado – home of the nation’s second-largest aerospace economy – the challenges of physical distance and the importance of geography still drive some of the greatest innovations taking place in the industry today. Going to Jupiter, for example, involves solving a major puzzle involving distance, energy and physics. The planet is 1.76 billion miles away from Earth, and when NASA scientists decided to send a spacecraft to explore the giant planet, they had to figure out how to get there using the same amount of power as a blender, while solar arrays providing power would absorb less and less sunlight as it flew deeper into space. Did it matter that when the spacecraft, Juno, entered Jupiter’s orbit in 2016 that it had been built in Denver by Lockheed Martin at an elevation of 5,280 feet, a mile-high closer to space? Or that several instruments for the nearly 10-year, 3 billion mile voyage of the New Horizons Mission to Pluto were built in Boulder? Today, Blue CanyonTechnologies in Boulder provides satellite technology for NASA and is one of the fastest-growing privately owned engineering companies in the United States. It was recently awarded a contract for the agency’s HaloSat project, a new high-performance small satellite featuring an ultra-precise attitude control system. The company is also developing a new test facility and creating a ground station for satellite missions – building on state’s history as a strategic location for some of the nation’s most critical command and control systems going back to the 1950s. Colorado’s aerospace industry was “destined to grow because of its location,” and the state’s central vicinity in the United States made it less vulnerable to enemy attack, according to a history of the industry by the Colorado Space Coalition. Also important was the military’s ability to “bounce shortwave radio signals to both its Asian and European operations from Colorado bases.” Colorado’s location would only become more desirable as the industry grew over time. In 1955, the Glenn L. Martin Company established a plant to build intercontinental ballistic missiles in Waterton Canyon, just southwest of Denver. Ball Aerospace, a business of Ball Corporation, was founded in Boulder, Colorado, in 1956 by Ed Ball, one of the sons of the original Ball Brothers in collaboration with faculty and graduate students from the University of Colorado. By then, the “Centennial State” had long been a site for military training and activities – think of the Army’s famous 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale, whose veterans helped found the modern ski industry. In the 1940s and 1950s, Colorado added aerospace to its military role. Aurora’s Buckley Air Force Base, begun as an Army Air Corps base. In 1943, today is an Air Force Space Command base with responsibility for air operations, space-based missile warning capabilities, space surveillance and communications operations. In 1954, Air Force Secretary Harold Talbott announced a site north of Colorado Springs as the new location for the Air Force Academy. The youngest of the nation’s five service academies has distinguished itself by graduating thousands of pilots, astronauts and officers who have provided leadership for U.S. air and space activities. AIA and its member companies regularly participate in the Space Symposium, scheduled this year for April 3–6. At the 2016 Space Symposium,AIA’s David Melcher spoke to attendees about the need for a 21st Century Space Competitiveness Strategy. Given that Colorado has produced a disproportionate number of astronauts, including one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts, Scott Carpenter; and Apollo 13 command module pilot Jack Swigert, whose heroic image in statue greets visitors to Denver International Airport and the U.S. Capitol; it’s fitting that the space community gathers in Colorado Springs each year. Of course, Colorado is a hub much of the innovation occurring in the aerospace industry right now.Today, companies like Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company and Ball Aerospace support multiple commercial and government programs from Boulder, Colorado Springs and Denver-area locations. “Colorado is at the intersection of virtually every element that makes the aerospace industry successful.
It attracts a talented, diverse workforce with the high-tech skills aerospace demands,” says Mark Valerio, vice president, Enterprise Solutions and Integration for Lockheed Martin Space Systems. “A strong network of suppliers and small businesses complement a number of large prime contractors that operate here. The state government also works proactively to create an environment where aerospace can thrive. Few places offer that incredible mix of talent, partnerships and infrastructure.” Lockheed’s Colorado-based programs include Orion, NASA’s next-generation deep space crew exploration vehicle that will take astronauts to the Moon, Mars and beyond. Orion’s engineering and design is led out of Lockheed’s Denver office. The company also built the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft – operated from Denver – that NASA launched in September 2016 on a seven-year mission to the asteroid Bennu. Lockheed Martin also supports a growing commercial satellite industry with capabilities and partnerships in Colorado that are improving the design and manufacturing process. At a facility in Denver, the company is working with additive manufacturing technology – and materials from plastics and polymers to titanium – to produce 3D-printed satellite parts, which can be manufactured in half the time and at a fraction of the cost of traditionally manufactured components. When it launched in 2011, Lockheed’s Juno was the first interplanetary spacecraft made with parts produced through additive manufacturing. Meanwhile, Lockheed can trace its current work for military customers back to the military command, control and reconnaissance missions that accounted for Colorado’s aerospace growth throughout the 20th century. Programs and capabilities supported by Lockheed in the state include the Army Warfighter Information Network, the Air Force’s global intelligence processing system, the Air Force Operations Center and the Missile Defense Agency Battle Management System. “We do a lot of work that entails capabilities related to intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance for different types of platforms,” said Suzanne Smith of Lockheed Martin. These developments encouraged aircraft-component manufacturers to consolidate and create a new breed of supplier aligned with a Tier 1 world. Honeywell, Safran, Goodrich and Hamilton Sundstrand led the way.They took on system engineering and supply chain responsibilities and paid for this additional capability with larger aftermarket revenue streams. Rolls-Royce brought in automotive supply chain executives and reduced its supplier count dramatically. Airbus narrowed to fewer than 100 major suppliers on the A380 and outsourced 60% of its value; on the A350XWB this figure would grow to 80%. And Boeing famously embraced an aggressive Tier 1 model at the same it integrated many new technologies on the 787. It looked like the Tier 1 supply chain model was here to stay, until several factors intervened. Boeing’s massive losses from the 787 came to light, and it began to question why it seemed to take all the risk while earning lower margins than its suppliers. Its Partnering for Success (PFS) initiative ensued in 2011. It also embraced reengining over new designs and shifted its focus from technology innovation to process innovation.Airbus initiated its own Scope+ cost-cutting initiative on the A320.
OEM-supplier Relations Are Changing Shortly after becoming CEO of Ford Motor Co., former Boeing Commercial Airplanes chief Alan Mulally was asked if he was ready for the complexity of the automotive industry. “An automobile has about 10,000 moving parts, right? An airplane has 2 million, and it has to stay up in the air,” he reminded his Detroit audience. It is no surprise that the jetliner supply chain is complex and constantly evolving. Now it is transitioning into an era we might call Post-Tier 1. This unfolding era of OEM-supplier relations entails more OEM vertical integration and restructured supplier responsibilities—and offers new opportunities for nontraditional suppliers. To understand the implications of this shift, and why it is happening now, requires a brief review of recent supply chain history. In the first four decades of the jet age, aircraft and aeroengine OEMs were vertically integrated. In-house production of aerostructures, aircraft systems, parts and interiors fed their final assembly lines. This changed in the 1980s and 1990s as Douglas outsourced large chunks of aerostructures and then Bombardier pioneered a new supply chain model, called “Tier 1,” on the Global Express. In this new approach, which borrowed heavily from the automotive industry, Bombardier brought in 10-12 risk-sharing partners and gave them large work packages and system design responsibility.The experiment worked, and these partners funded roughly half of the aircraft’s development costs. Embraer followed suit on the E-Jet in the late 1990s and reduced its A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Disruptive technologies—including additive manufacturing, advanced automation and digital manufacturing—began to change the make-buy equation for OEMs as the labor content of manufacturing plummeted. And recently, political populism put globalism and sourcing from lowwage countries in retreat. Boeing made a major break from the Tier 1 model on the 777-X when it sourced from Heroux Devtek (landing gear) and Nabtesco (flight controls) in make-to-print contracts where Boeing controls the system design and aftermarket. It brought the 777-X’s wings, nacelles and pylons back inhouse, and it recruited a new supplier to manufacture 737 economy seats (also make-to-print) so Boeing could keep the profits. A senior Boeing supply chain executive stated in March that the airframer is now interested in working with more suppliers and is intrigued with “focused factories” in which a supplier dedicates its production primarily to Boeing (see graphic). In 2016, it launched a new phase of Partnering for Success (PFS2) that includes additional pricing concessions and revised payment terms in addition to targeting supplier aftermarket revenue streams. And in July, Boeing will start operation of its new Global Services Unit, which has a goal of $50 billion in services revenue. Lucrative Tier 1 aftermarket revenue streams will be a key target. In aeroengines, GE is pursuing an aggressive vertical integration strategy (AW&ST May 23-June 5, 2016, p. 11). It would like to replace most aeroengine superalloys with ceramic matrix composites, and it is building its own supply chain from scratch. GE is making unprecedented investments in additive manufacturing and recently bolstered its capabilities with the
acquisition of Arcam AB and Concept Laser, two major European additive-manufacturing suppliers. Some 35% of its new advanced turboprop engine for the Cessna Denali will be printed in-house, reducing the serialized part count to just 35. This leaves little value-added for suppliers. A supply chain meltdown on the 787 program prompted Boeing to change its approach to sourcing products and services. Tier 1 suppliers are an important part of the aeroengine ecosystem and are often risk-sharing partners on new engines. It is not unusual for Tier 1 suppliers to own 25% of the equity of a new engine program. In 2013, GE acquired Avio, one of the most important Tier 1 suppliers of gearboxes, transmissions and low-pressure turbine modules. It also established joint ventures with Woodward and Parker Aerospace to build aeroengine fuel systems. The Parker joint venture uses GE’s additive-manufacturing capability to make Leap fuel nozzles. To be fair, not all aircraft and aeroengine OEMs are shifting to “Post-Tier 1” supply chain strategies to the same extent as Boeing and GE. Bombardier and Embraer are heavily dependent on Tier 1 systems-engineering capabilities. Airbus has maintained a consistent make-buy approach, although it continues to demand more supplier-pricing concessions. And Pratt & Whitney needs its Tier 1s as it ramps up its geared turbofan production. Still, with few new aircraft programs on the horizon, unrelenting customer cost pressure and disruptive technologies entering the mainstream, it is a good bet that the “Post-Tier 1” supply chain trend will continue. The implications of the trend are considerable. A recent white paper identified three likely outcomes. First, “Post-Tier 1” there will be a significant boost to aircraft OEM margins and cash. By improving their own operational performance, cutting supplier costs and capturing more aftermarket and services revenue,Airbus and Boeing will average low-double-digit profitability by 2020, the white paper forecasts. A second implication, not surprisingly, is major disruptions to the supply chain. Suppliers at all tiers will face unrelenting financial pressure. Aerostructures companies are particularly vulnerable, and the recent news that the Triumph Group’s aerostructures division may soon file for bankruptcy is a harbinger. Interiors, flight controls and landing-systems suppliers are in the bull’s-eye, as well. However, not all segments are susceptible: Aircraft OEMs likely will not vertically integrate in avionics or aeroengines, for example. Finally, there will be new supplier opportunities. Manufacturers of industrial automation and digital manufacturing equipment should see a major boost. Nontraditional suppliers, including agile and lean suppliers with automotive experience, will be in demand. Boeing recently announced a partnership with automotive seating supplier Adient to create new aircraft interiors competition. The shift to a Post-Tier 1 supply chain is in its early stages and entails huge execution and financial risks. EP Systems Selects Cache County for New Headquarters Utah’s higher education system plays a significant role in EDCUtah’s efforts to recruit companies to the state. That significance is exemplified in Electronic Power (EP) Systems’ decision to move to Logan, Utah. EP Systems traces its roots to Los Angeles-based Phillips Machine & Weld. Beginning as a manufacturer and supplier of machined parts to aerospace companies such as Boeing and Northrop Grumman, the company ventured into energy storage systems for electronic vehicles. EP Systems’ product integrates key technologies such as lithium-ion batteries, converters, controllers, software, and mechanical packaging for major industrial and aerospace markets. Its technology aims to address issues such as energy independence, carbon emissions, and global security. It is this technology, and the research being done in the field, which brought EP Systems to Utah. The company was looking to move their headquarters, including a new facility to handle R&D as well as advanced manufacturing, from their current location in Los Angeles. Though courted by Arizona with a large incentive, “team Utah” came together to show EP Systems that Utah was the best place for them to innovate and grow. One of the key decision drivers for EP Systems was that Utah State University (USU) conducts similar research to what the company does. company not only in the collaboration of research being done, but also the workforce being developed at USU that will feed directly into the company. Having recent graduates that are well versed in the complex technologies EP Systems designs and manufactures will significantly reduce the costs of training new employees. Another key decision driver was operating cost. Through two site visits, site research, cost comparisons, and occupation reports, Max Backlund, who managed this project for EDCUtah, showed the company the significant cost savings that can be achieved in Utah and particularly in Logan. The Utah Science Technology and Research Initiative (USTAR) also played a crucial role. They provided a grant for the renovation of lab space at USU that both the company and university will use, reducing costs for all parties involved. Additionally, the potential that Utah’s Foreign Trade Zone will expand to Logan will add more cost savings for the company. The Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) led the efforts of “team Utah,” specifically in providing an incentive. Logan City was with EDCUtah every step of the way, supporting the company as they considered where in Logan to locate. EP Systems will be a great addition to Logan’s growing aerospace and defense industry, as well as Governor Herbert’s goal to create 25,000 jobs in rural Utah over the next four years. On May 11th, 2017 EP Systems accepted an incentive to create 128 jobs and $11.6 million in capital investment.The company has selected a two acre site in Logan and plans to build a 15 thousand square foot facility.
