It’s Likely That 2020 Will Be Another Good Year In The USA That’s why Bloomberg Economics is forecasting that the U.S. economy will grow 2% in 2020 as the record-length expansion turns 11 years old in June. Real incomes are rising, and unemployment is at a 50-year low. We like to focus on the good news because there is always a lot of news published that is negative. Here are some good excerpts from 2019: * January 4 – Government data reveals that the U.S. economy added 312,000 jobs in December, far ahead of predictions of 177,000, and that manufacturing ended 2018 with the most jobs added in one year since 1997. * February 27–28 – The 2019 North Korea–United States Hanoi Summit is held in Vietnam. It is the second summit with a United States President and the North Korean leader. * March 3 An unmanned demonstration flight of the SpaceX Dragon achieves successful autonomous docking with the International Space Station. * March 17 – The University of Tennessee announces it will guarantee free tuition and fees to admitted in-state residents with a family household income of less than $50,000. * March 19 – American Karen Uhlenbeck is the first woman to win the Abel Prize for outstanding contributions to mathematics. * April 23 –Wing Aviation, a Google offshoot company, becomes the first drone delivery service to receive Air Carrier Certification from the Federal Aviation Administration. * April 28 – Undersea explorer Victor Vescovo sets a new world record for the deepest ever sea dive at 10,972 meters (35,997 ft) in the Pacific Ocean’s Mariana Trench. Several unusual things are discovered at the bottom, including four new species of prawn-like crustaceans and a new species of snailfish. * May 3 – New economic data shows that the U.S. unemployment rate fell from 3.8 percent to 3.6 percent in April 2019, the lowest in 49 years, with employers adding 263,000 jobs in April versus the expected 190,000. * June 7 – NASA announces that, beginning in 2020, the International Space Station will be commercialized, allowing private companies to use the station to conduct for-profit activities, including marketing, advertising and space manufacturing. * June 10 – United Technologies and Raytheon agree to a merger. The resultant company is projected to be the second largest defense and aerospace contractor in the U.S. * July 11–The Dow Jones Industrial Average exceeds 27,000 points for the first time in its history. * July 31– The Federal Reserve cuts interest rates for the first time since 2008, with a 0.25% reduction to a baseline level of 2–2.25%. * August 28 –16-year-old Swedish student Greta Thunberg arrives in New York Harbor after sailing across the Atlantic. Thunberg plans to testify at a UN summit on zero emissions. * September 6 – The Artificial Intelligence and Technology Office (AITO) is established, as part of the Department of Energy. * October 25 –The longest strike in General Motors’ history ends when 57% of the members of the United Automobile Workers union vote to ratify a contract. * November 21 – At a showcase in Los Angeles,Tesla CEO Elon Musk unveils theTesla Cybertruck, the company’s first electric pickup truck. * December 6 – The U.S. unemployment rate drops to 3.5%, the lowest in 50 years. * December 11 – Time magazine names climate activist Greta Thunberg Person of the Year. Top-ranked UC Berkeley startup accelerator SkyDeck, which helped bring forth scooter and bike rental company Lime that is now valued at more than $2 billion, opened applications today for its Spring 2020 cohort. SkyDeck usually accepts about 20 applicants. The startups selected each receive $100,000 investment from UC Berkeley’s $25 million SkyDeck Fund plus mentorship, access to the school’s resources and a dedicated workspace. At the end of the 6-month program, startups present on demo day to hundreds of potential investors. Applicants can be from any industry — life sciences to consumer apps to hardware or software — but need to have at least one team member who has gone to one of the 10 UCs or UC labs. Applications are also open to any startup that has an international founder, regardless of UC affiliation. SkyDeck places a special emphasis on

applicants from UC Berkeley— students, faculty or alumni— and founders with a diverse background. “We are particularly interested in inclusion and are looking for founders who are diverse and want to be a part of a vibrant program with a very inclusive culture,” said Caroline Winnett, SkyDeck’s executive director. Winnett said that past startups focused on CRISPR technology, material sciences, gene therapy and artificial intelligence. SkyDeck recently partnered with Amazon’s $200 million Alexa Fund and will be looking for startups in this cohort doing interesting work in voice technology. Beginning in 2012, SkyDeck has had 340 companies go through its program, garnering more than $1 billion in investments, with 46 exits. SkyDeck also runs an incubator program for early-stage startups called HotDesk, and is a joint program in UC Berkeley Haas School of Business, the College of Engineering, and the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research. The Quick-Change polyurethane guide channels can be changed quickly and easily in about 10 minutes to accommodate multiple bar stock diameters. Oil filled guide channels envelope the stock, providing the ideal guiding system for high RPM turning operations. During this process the rotation of the bar creates a hydro-dynamic effect, centering the bar stock in the channel reducing noise and vibration. The guide channel is securely closed with a toggle lever system while machining bars. Bar stock collet changes can be done less than 2 minutes with the “Pin-On” collet feature. A Roller Steady Rest device on the Turbo guides the bar stock between the bar feeder and lathe. Rollers or blocks provide excellent feeding of round or profiled material. The rollers can be continuously adjusted to the bar diameter and can quickly be replaced with blocks for supporting profiled material.Two Turbo 3-38 configurations will handle bar lengths of 3800mm (12’ 5”) with the standard 12-foot unit, or 2200 mm (7’ 3”) bars with the 6-foot unit.

Bars are placed on the storage table at the side of the guide channel This table features a loading capacity of 11 inches.The new bar is automatically positioned in the lathe ready for facing before the first component is produced. Part to part feed out can be controlled without a dead stop being required. Loading time for a 12‘ bar is 24 seconds. Maximum adjustable forward feed rate is 1000 mm per second and maximum adjustable return speed is 2000 mm per second.

The bar remnants are withdrawn to the back end of the magazine and a gripper extracts it out of the collet and deposits it in a remnant basket. An air operated gripping device is used to both insert the new bar into the bar stock collet and to extract the remnant. It is not necessary to chamfer the bar if it is cleanly cut. No adjustment for bar size is necessary and it is completely “Self-Centering”.

Studies Reinforce Automation, Workforce Development Trends In Manufacturing
Both units ordered and revenue are up 1 percent in the quarter compared to 2018.
Walking around FABTECH last month, it was hard to miss the widespread presence of automation – even outside of the designated Robots and Industrial Automation pavilion. Examples of burgeoning automated tech were everywhere: grinding cells, press brakes, self-learning finishing, material handling, large-scale folding, and so on.
The largest driver of the year-to-date growth in units ordered was an increase in orders from automotive OEMs at 47 percent, followed by plastics and rubber at 15 percent, and food and consumer goods at 4 percent.
That shouldn’t have come as a surprise to any fabricator, welder, or manufacturer at the recordbreaking show this year, though. In general, the amplified prevalence of automation in every sector of manufacturing is unavoidable. But so is the industry’s glaring skills gap. Discussions during FABx Tech Talks and Leadership Exchanges about the labor shortage were equally abundant as the robots throughout the halls of McCormick Place. After all, automation development and skilled worker shortfalls go hand in hand. In the last couple of weeks two separate surveys have emerged that only reinforce the connection. Industrial Robotic Automation Continues Steady Expansion The Robotic Industries Association (RIA), which is part of the Association for Advancing Automation (A3), released a report this past week showing that robotic unit orders have increased more than 5 percent over the past year in North America; to be exact, 5.2 percent through Q3 2019, compared to 2018 results. So far this year, North American companies have ordered 23,894 robotic units, valued at $1.3 billion. And looking at Q3 results only, North American companies ordered 7,446 robots, valued at $438 million. A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST

Jeff Burnstein, president of A3 and RIA, said he sees strong interest in robotics from companies that have never invested in robots before and that orders from nonautomotive customers remain near-record numbers. That’s a promising indication for long-term growth in robotics and automation. “We continue to see improvement in the robotics market,” Burnstein said in the report. “At this time last year, we saw a dip in orders of around 15 percent, so it’s encouraging to see a recovery through the third quarter. We hope to end the year strong and see growth in 2020 as well.” Survey Reveals Negative Perception,
Lacking Awareness of Trade Schools and Careers One of the biggest culprits in the mounting skills gap is the increasing indifference in manufacturing careers among younger generations. So, really, the skills gap is preceded by a perception gap since potential manufacturers, fabricators, and welders are hindered by stigma even before they get the chance to learn or become interested in a skilled trade. And according to in-depth data from a new survey commissioned by Metal Supermarkets, a supplier of small-quantity metals, the perception gap is unfortunately holding up. The national poll of more than 500 men and women ages 18-24 reveals that those surveyed do not give serious consideration to enrolling in trade school as a path to landing a stable, well-paying job and believe attending traditional college is the best path to a successful career. “Despite skyrocketing student loan debt and the growing global demand for skilled trade positions with great job security, most young people still believe attending traditional college is the only route to a successful future, “said Stephen Schober, president/CEO of Metal Supermarkets. Here are five items from the Metal Supermarkets survey that stand out: Nearly two thirds (65 percent) believe that student debt was simply the price you pay for a college education.
Half said they’d rather work in a coffee shop as a barista than as a welder—even though top-paying welder jobs can pay well more than $100,000 a year.
More than half (56 percent) say they’re not—or never were—interested in going to trade school. Two out of three (66 percent) said they did not know enough about trade schools.
“What they don’t seem to know is that attending a trade school is a great option for students who want to learn a craft, enter the workforce earlier than others, and carry less student debt,” said Schober. “It is also a path to a great career and a potentially high-paying career.”
More than half (62 percent) said they didn’t learn about trade school options in high school, and more than two thirds (68 percent) said trade schools were never discussed by their guidance counselor.
Additionally, 73 percent polled said traditional college gives you a better future than trade school. A quarter of those surveyed (25 percent) felt students who attended trade schools were not as smart as those who went to traditional college and believe people attending trade schools were not as motivated as four-year college grads. And more than half of the respondents (55 percent) believe people with office jobs earn more respect than those who work with their hands.
More than half (58 percent) admitted they do not know about the trade schools in their community.
The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) shows that there’s almost a $100,000 difference between attending a traditional college and a trade school. Composite Solutions Secures Drone Components Contract A Pierce County maker of composite aerospace parts has won a deal to supply its lightweight components to an emerging drone manufacturer. Composite Solutions of Sumner says it’s won a contract with Drone America, located in Reno, Nevada, to build and supply the wings, horizontal stabilizer and fuselage for its Savant unmanned aircraft system. The Savant is a medium sized, all-electric aircraft for emergency services, search and rescue and wildlife management. It is capable of vertical take off and landings, and can stay in the skies for up to 90 minutes at a time, Drone America says. It flies at between 42 and 85 mph and can cruises as high as 12,000 feet. In 2017, it completed a 39-mile flight to make a package delivery over water while being flown by an operator who did not have a direct sight line to the aircraft. Composite Solutions, a unit of Taiwan’s Topkey Group, makes high-strength, lightweight composite structures and components for commercial and military aircraft, helicopters and business jets. Composite Solutions works with several commercial and defense aerospace companies, including Boeing, Bell Helicopter, HondaJet, Raisbeck Engineering, Collins Aerospace and Sikorsky. California-Based US Hammer Builds StandAlone, Gas-Powered Jackhammer Locally
a decade he’s run Pioneer Machinery, a construction equipment rental company in Woodland.
Woodland-based US Hammer Inc. plans to disrupt the construction tool business with its patented and portable gas-powered jackhammer.
US Hammer makes its products locally in Knights Landing, using parts sourced from two companies in California and one in Oregon, as well as U.S.-made Honda four-stroke, 2-horsepower gas motors, Galloway said.
US Hammer jackhammers are more fuel-efficient, quieter, cleaner and lighter than most pneumatic jackhammers, which need to be tethered to large diesel air compressors. “The technology behind the jackhammer hasn’t changed in 60 years,” said US Hammer CEO Chris Galloway. “No one is looking at it because it’s not glamorous.” While a quieter, lighter and portable jackhammer might not be glamorous, it is something that nearly every rental yard in the country would probably like to have on hand, and just selling one to every yard could keep US Hammer busy for quite some time, Galloway said. The gas-powered onboard engine takes away the need for towing around an air compressor on a trailer, which makes the US Hammer jackhammer a lot more convenient, Galloway said. The company sells its hammers for $5,000. Pneumatic jackhammers can be had for about $2,000, but the compressors cost $20,000, and they also require hoses, oilers and other equipment, Galloway said. “I don’t think this was an easy product to innovate,” said Gino DiCaro, vice president of communications for the California Manufacturers & Technology Association. DiCaro was a judge in the 2019 Sacramento Region Innovation Awards, where US Hammer won top prize for advanced manufacturing. US Hammer incorporated two years ago and began selling its jackhammers this year, Galloway said. So far, the company has sold 30 jackhammers, he said. “We sell them as fast as we can make them.” Early next year, the company will promote its products at construction tool and tool rental trade shows in Las Vegas and Florida, Galloway said. Smith & Wesson Owner Boosts Outlook As US Gun Demand Heats Up Smith &Wesson’s parent company Amer ican Outdoor Brands raised its full-year outlook after booking stronger quarterly sales than forecast, as US demand for firearms has picked up in the back half of 2019. The results come after the Springfield, Massachusetts-based group said last month it would separate its gun-making business from the rest of the company whose products include knives, rifle scopes and other outdoor gear. American Outdoor reported on Thursday net sales of $154.4m in its fiscal second quarter that ended in October, down 4.5 per cent versus the year-ago period but more than $4m higher than the top end of its guidance. On an adjusted basis, earnings of 9 cents per share surpassed estimates by two pennies. Background checks — used as a gauge of consumer gun sales — are poised to set a new annual record in 2019.The FBI processed 2.57m background checks in November, up more than 7 per cent versus last
year, and the agency has recorded year-over-year gains in every month since April. Black Friday set a mark for the second-highest daily total on record. American Outdoor lifted its revenue forecast by $50m at both ends of the range. It now expects $680m to $700m in net sales for the year ending in April 2020, greater than analysts’ average estimate of $638.5m. Its guidance for full-year adjusted earnings per share rose to between 76 cents and 84 cents, from 70 to 78 cents. Analysts had projected earnings of 74 cents per share. The stock has gained nearly 13 per cent since news of the proposed spin-off, and nearly 10 per cent in the past two days amid hopes for an upbeat earnings surprise against the backdrop of stronger demand. Back then, Frohnmayer had talked about — though hardly promised — an uptick in production to perhaps five vehicles a day around the end of the year. Now the expectation is to see the ramp-up sometime in 2020, to “somewhere in the vicinity of 100 to 150 vehicles per month,” although Frohnmayer said the company was “not giving any guidance beyond Q4.” Meanwhile, Arcimoto is continuing to deal with meeting its heavy capital needs while awaiting revenue. In the most recent quarter, it banked sales of $33,331, against operating expenses of more than $3.7 million. Including interest expenses, it reported a net loss of just over $4 million, bringing losses since the beginning of the year to about $11 million. Cash on hand dipped to $748,000 at the end of the quarter, but the company raised $2.35 million in a direct offering in early October. Just in the past week, it unveiled plans for a follow-on offering of 5.5 million shares. Along with making vehicles,Arcimoto has to sell them, of course. products to market faster and address consumer demand for more personalized products. The goal is to boost productivity and profitability. The trend is creating a challenge for companies who must train their workers on the latest 3-D skills and create new job roles to oversee design, prototyping and production. These include 3-D lab technicians, 3-D print experts and 3-D print coordinators. The pace of change is mind-boggling. A decade ago who would have imagined we would be using 3-D printing to personalize cosmetics and dentistry, print body parts and use it to make spare parts for a wide range of industrial applications? “We are moving towards 3-D printing as a main action [manufacturing] platform,” says Jennifer A. Lewis, ScD., core faculty member at the Wyss Institute. “It’s no longer just for prototyping.” For a peak at how 3-D printers are revolutionizing manufacturing, one can examine the work at Harvard University’s Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering. Scientists there have developed what they call MM3D, (Multimaterial Multinozzle 3D printing). Using this method, a 3-D robot can switch between up to eight different printing materials, enabling the creation of complex shapes in a fraction of the time of current machines. Each nozzle is capable of switching materials at up to 50 times per second, which is faster than the eye can see, or about as fast as a hummingbird beats its wings. Right now extrusion-based 3-D printing allows a broad palette of materials to be printed, but the process is extremely slow and can take days if it is a large part. “This new technology is our attempt to solve this,” says Mark Skylar-Scott, Ph.D., a research associate at the Wyss Institute. $1.77B Boeing Defense Deals Boost Company Boeing’s defense arm recently secured a handful of deals worth a combined $1.77 billion to maintain and upgrade military aircraft in the U.S. and Europe. Boeing’s deals include a $1 billion contract to upgrade NATO’s fleet of 14 AWACS surveillance airplanes, providing them with new communications and networking technologies to extend their lives until 2035. Boeing International President Michael Arthur said 16 NATO allies on both sides of the Atlantic will pay for the AWACS modernization. The distinct-looking reconnaissance jets, with spheres positioned on top, are capable of detecting hostile aircraft, missiles, ships and other weaponry. The Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey is a tiltrotor military aircraft with both a vertical takeoff and landing and short takeoff and landing capability. It is designed to combine the functionality of a conventional helicopter with the long-range, high-speed cruise performance of a turboprop aircraft. The V-22 Osprey built by Bell-Boeing, a joint venture involving Boeing Company and Bell Helicopter, recently received contracts worth a combined $598.1 million. One deal announced recently involved a $218.7 million contract by the Defense Logistics Agency to provide “performance-based logistics and engineering support” for the Osprey. A $379.4 million contract awarded by the agency last month was for maintenance, repair and other materials for the V-22. Fed Survey Finds U.S. Economy Expanding Despite Trade Fallout The Federal Reserve said that the U.S. economy was expanding at a modest pace in October and early November, supported by growing consumer spending. In its latest assessment of business conditions nationwide, the Fed struck a more upbeat tone than it had in its previous report when it had worried more about trade tensions and slower global growth. However, it still noted that the majority of the Fed’s 12 districts were not experiencing growth in manufacturing, which has been hurt by a widening trade war with China.

The Fed report, known as the beige book, will be used when Fed officials meet in mid-December to set interest rate policies.The wide expectation is that the central bank will leave its benchmark rate unchanged after
cutting it at its three previous meetings. Those rate cuts, which followed four rate hikes last year, have given a boost to interest-rate sensitive sectors of the economy such as housing and auto sales.
Emirates, Unnamed Asian Airline Order Boeing 777X Flight Simulators Emirates, the biggest customer for Boeing’s 777X jet, has ordered two flight simulators and training suites to prepare its pilots to fly the massive aircraft. Dubai-based Emirates also acquired options to buy four additional training suites from flight simulator maker CAE Inc. under a deal announced Thursday. CAE also revealed that it recently sold a 777X simulator to an unidentified Asian airline. Boeing has two known 777X customers in Asia: Cathay Pacific of Hong Kong and Singapore Airlines. Emirates and CAE Inc. declined to disclose terms of their deal, but Emirates said its first simulator will be delivered by early 2021. Production of Boeing’s newest, biggest and most advanced passenger jet ever has begun and the first jet rolled out of the factory for flight tests in March. Explore its features, cabin interior, and innovations, including its unique folding wingtips. Timothy Clark, the president of Emirates Airlines, said recently he doubts that the Dubai-based airline will get any new Boeing 777X jets in 2020. He was correct. Boeing said it now won’t deliver until 2021. His airline has ordered 150 back in 2013. Boeing was scheduled to start 777X flight tests this fall, but load testing was suspended in September after a cargo door blew off during a ground pressurization stress test. The jet’s GE
Aviation GE9X turbine engines also suffered premature wear and were returned to GE’s factory in Ohio for upgrades. Two engines are back at Boeing’s Everett factory, and a first flight test is slated for early next year. Boeing vows to deliver the jet in 2020, but Emirates President Tim Clark has been skeptical of that timeline and recently cut Emirates’ order for 777Xs from 150 to 126 aircraft. Boeing has also eliminated the tandem use of robots to do riveting, a problem one Seattle-area supplier anticipated. The jet maker this summer showed off some of what its largest commercial airplane can do, giving it a “fullbody workout” and demonstrating how the folding wing tips work. He had learned over the years that he had a passion for creating innovative productions, and with his military background, he sought to launch a company that would proudly manufacture products in the USA, and would make an effort to hire Veterans. Prior to opening GreenBroz, Cullen did some extensive analysis of various industries, seeking out one that had tremendous growth potential. “I looked at the evolving cannabis industry and saw that there were bottlenecks. After visiting a number of cultivation facilities, I recognized that the equipment wasn’t the most technologically advanced. I knew I could improve the harvesting machines.” 24

GreenBroz was officially formed in 2012, and from its inception, the GreenBroz strategy was to design and manufacture machines that would enable their clients to process their harvest more efficiently and consistently while saving them time, money and labor costs. As start-ups often do, Cullen‘s first ‘corporate headquarters’ was his garage. He calls himself fortunate because, very early in the company’s existence, and with just the 2nd piece of equipment he invented, a dry trimmer, the company was an overnight success. So much so that today Green Broz isn’t operating out of Cullen’s garage, rather is occupies a 50,000 square foot building in Las Vegas, Nevada. GreenBroz manufactures a number of products, many which have patents or are patent pending, including sorters, trimmers, extractors, batchers, destemmers, rosin presses, and fan slides. They even have a line of GreenBroz apparel. “Our machines are designed for harvesting and work very well for harvesting cannabis”, Cullen says. He continues, “Our trimmer machines are our flagship product. GreenBroz’ latest trimmer, introduced earlier this year, the GreenBroz Model M Dry Trimmer, is designed to closely mimic the act of hand trimming your harvest while at the same time increasing the consistency and efficiency of your harvest process. It is GreenBroz, Inc.’s largest and most high-efficiency automated harvesting machine to date, with 8-12 pounds per hour. The lesson Cullen learned from his parent’s purchase of a machine that didn’t work properly drives GreenBroz’ business model. GreenBroz must make machines that work well and help their customers to increase profitability. “The machines we purchase to make our machines too had to be reliable and so technologically advanced that we would be able to manufacture best in class harvesting machines on time and at the right price.” In addition to being an entrepreneur, Cullen is a manufacturing engineer with a very high comfort level, even a passion, for new technology. Cullen evaluated different press brakes while attending Fabtech in Las Vegas a few years ago, and in the end, decided on builder SafanDarley. SafanDarley is the leading global specialist in developing and constructing press brakes and shears for both thin and thick sheet metal. Boeing, Kitty Hawk Reorganize And Rebrand Mountain View ‘Flying Car’ Venture The Boeing Co. and the Kitty Hawk Corp. startup funded by Alphabet Inc. cofounder Larry Page said they have reorganized and rebranded a flying car venture they are collaborating on as Wisk Aero.
“Together we work toward a future where flight is woven into our everyday lives, and transportation is driven by sustainable, electric power,” they said. It remains to be seen how the newly named venture fits into what Kitty Hawk is doing and Boeing’s other similar projects. Boeing also has a flying car partnership with Porsche called Aurora Flight Sciences and another one with SparkCognition called SkyGrid.
At the core of the joint venture is a flying car dubbed Cora, which has been tested in New Zealand. The new company is headquartered in Mountain View and headed by Gary Gysin. He previously led Liquid Robotics, a Sunnyvale startup that Boeing bought in 2016 when it was developing a wave and solar powered unmanned ocean robot. Wisk’s board is heavily weighted towards Boeing, with Kitty Hawk CEO Sebastian Thrun as the only person not connected to the aviation giant among its four directors. Thrun and Kitty Hawk, meanwhile, unveiled a single person flying vehicle at TechCrunch Disrupt in October called Heaviside, predicting that fully self-flying vehicles will happen before self-driving cars. The reorganized Wisk venture, however, was announced after Forbes posted a story on Monday that said Kitty Hawk has faced numerous technical issues, safety problems and unresolved questions about the practical use of its battery-powered aircraft. The Forbes article is based on interviews with four former Kitty Hawk employees who were among six who spoke to the magazine on the condition of anonymity due to non-disclosure agreements. Kitty Hawk told Forbes that it has decided not to sell the one-seater Flyer
that is unveiled last year to individuals and has returned deposits to would-be buyers. Among the problems recounted in the story is an early morning fire that Mountain View Fire Department had to put out last year at a building used by Flyer. The former employees told Forbes that the fire at the Googleowned building involved damaged batteries that had been pulled out of a Flyer that had crashed the previous day in flight testing. Forbes said former Kitty Hawk employees said the company let go of two members of the flight test team when they cited concerns they had about the safety of the Flyer. “It was a pattern—if you talked about safety you were done, so you just didn’t,” quoted a former Kitty Hawk employee. “That’s just how it had to be if you wanted to get a paycheck.” Shernaz Daver, an advisor to Kitty Hawk, told Forbes, “No person has ever been harmed or exposed due to undue risk in over 26,000 test flights with over 100 prototype vehicles.”By Cromwell Schubarth – Silicon Valley Business Journal

America Makes Announces New Seven Year, $322M Cooperative Agreement with Air Force Research Laboratory America Makes, the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute, proudly announces a new, seven year Cooperative Agreement (CA) with the Department of Air Force, Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). The CA is a Cost-Reimbursement/Cost Share agreement with a total funding value worth up to a combined $322 million of government cost and America Makes cost share. US Manufacturing Index Shows Signs of Stabilizing
Currently, America Makes sees the greatest need and opportunity resides within the AM materials space.The lack of materials design data for both metal and polymer is hindering the wider adoption of AM technologies and processes in general, and within specific industries like automotive, for example. With a greater understanding of the most critical materials and how to best optimize them for the available AM technologies and process would be a significant step forward industry-wide.
A gauge of U.S. factory activity unexpectedly improved in October for a second month, offering some hope that the manufacturing sector is stabilizing.
Within the education and workforce area, overcoming the skills gap that exists in the AM industry is a top priority. It’s not enough to adopt and implement the technology. Full commercialization of AM into production and supply chains cannot be realized without an acute understanding of how to best maximize the design freedoms and benefits of AM. Making design for AM (DfAM) courseware for designers more widely available at the academic level to include trade schools and universities, and the business level with apprenticeships and training, would spur innovation and generate substantial economic gains for the industry. The IHS Markit manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index rose to 51.5 from a final September reading of 51.1, according to a preliminary October report issued Thursday that matched the highest estimate in Bloomberg’s survey of economists. “If manufacturing can continue to gain momentum this should hopefully feed through to stronger jobs growth and an improved service sector performance, leading to better GDP growth,” said ChrisWilliamson, economist at IHS Markit. Imagine two companies in the same industry, serving the same markets while offering virtually the same products and services. One company is growing, while the other is struggling. Why? There are many reasons for success and failure, but in my 23+ year career, I have seen successful companies distinguish themselves through their people, processes, and use of technology. Accounting departments are no different! Driving profitability and cash flow with your accounting function, starts by analyzing accounting team skillsets; key accounting processes; and the use of technology. Accounting Team Skillsets As businesses grow and become more complex, accounting departments must evolve also. A Space-Age Insulating Technology Drives Portland’s Cold-Weather Apparel Stars When you walk into the soon-to-be Oros headquarters in Southeast Portland, the first office you see will be the company’s research and development lab. Liquid nitrogen. Infrared cameras. Hot plates. Cold plates. Chemists. Deep freezers. “Hardcore science,” said co-founder and CEO Michael Markesbery. The outdoor apparel company is known for its technology. Oros makes jackets and outerwear that is insulated with the same technology used to in spacecraft and astronaut suits. Oros, which relocated to Portland from Cincinnati in June, has quickly become one of the most promising companies in Portland’s robust ecosystem of apparel startups. It has raised $10 million in venture capital, leased nearly an entire floor of a building near the east end of the Hawthorne Bridge, landed a grant from the U.S. Department of Defense and started hiring from the area’s deep industry talent pool, including
employees who previously worked at Adidas and Columbia Sportswear. The idea for Oros came to Markesbery when he was on a backpacking trip in Europe during his sophomore year of college at Ohio’s Miami University.“The coolest thing I did is I climbed the tallest mountain in the Northeast Swiss Alps,” he said. “And I absolutely hated it. I looked like the Michelin Man. I remember thinking that, you know, there had to be a way to cut the bulk and cut the layers and still stay warm.” At the time, Markesbery and Oros co-founder Rithvik Venna, who also serves as the company’s chief operating officer, were pre-med students, working in university research labs, publishing research and trying to obtain the credentials needed to get into medical school.Around that time, Markesbery earned what’s known as an Astronaut Scholarship from NASA. “NASA was taking this stuff and using it to insulate the Mars rovers and all this stuff in space,” he said. “And I’m thinking, ‘You know space is like negative 455 degrees Fahrenheit, right? And you’re telling me you use this stuff to keep astronauts warm in space? How come it’s not being used in apparel?’” The company has raised $10 million to date, including an investment from the Portland Seed Fund, making it among the best-funded apparel companies in recent Portland history.Markesbery declined to disclose Oros’ annual sales, but he said revenue has at least doubled every year. The company employs 11 today. Die-Tech Precision Machining & Turning Certifies To ISO 9001 : 2015 With The Help of Consultant Team BMSC Father and son Andrew and Chris Bieganski are pleased to announce that they recently certified to ISO9001: 2015 with the support of consulting firm BMSC. It’s about an immigrant who comes to the United States armed with an advanced degree in engineering. He can’t find employment in his profession because he doesn’t have proficiency in the English language. He is extremely mechanically inclined, well schooled, with a high aptitude in math, so he finds work as a machinist. And so it goes with Andrew Bieganski, founder of Die-Tech. 47 years ago, Andrew immigrated to the United States, to New Jersey, from his homeland of Poland. “We came to New Jersey because my wife had family there”, he says. He was a degreed engineer, but with limited English, he sought out work in a machine shop. Andrew says, “In Poland, we had 4 seasons, and too had this in New Jersey.” Andrew wanted sunny, warm weather, and so 5 years after coming to the US, he moved his family to Northern California. Andrew was by this time a Journeyman toolmaker, and finding work in California was easy. “It was with my employer in California that I really gained experience in machining very tight tolerance parts”, he says. Andrew had a dream to own his own business, and just 2 years after moving to California, he realized his dream, opening Die-Tech with two partners. Throughout the next few years, the partners went on to different businesses and Andrew focused on the success of Die-Tech. The Bieganskis have 2 sons, Chris and Mike. Chris joined the company in 1994 upon graduation from high school; working in between the classes he was attending to pursue a degree in Engineering. Mike chose a very different path in life, becoming a chiropractor. Chris says, “I preferred manufacturing to engineering; it really pulled me in and everyday is different.” For this reason, Chris left school to work at the family business full time. In 1994, when Chris first joined the business, all machines in the company were manual. Chris says, “In 1996, my dad purchased our first CNC machine, a YCI/Supermax. He told me to take my time getting comfortable with the machine, we didn’t really need it yet, so that is what I did.” Chris was just out of high school, eager to learn, and he quickly taught himself how to use the machine. “That was more than 2 decades ago”, Chris says, “and today we have 7 CNC mills (4th axis capabilities and soon to add a 5th axis, 3 CNC lathes (with live tooling), manual mills, surface grinders, and wire EDMs.” With Chris in the family business, it was clear Die-Tech would do what it
takes for a long successful future. “Five years ago we moved from our 2400 square foot facility in San Jose, to a building we now own, in Morgan Hill, with 12,000 square feet of space”, Chris says. ISO certification is something Chris always planned for, and over the past couple of years, he would contact different consultants and interview them. “They just weren’t a fit”, he says, “and to be honest, I was really uncomfortable about how much work and overhead ISO certification would mean to our business.That is really what prevented us from pulling the trigger.” Chris has a friend from high school, Mark Diaz who owns Gentec Manufacturing. Mark and Chris were discussing ISO certification, and Mark had hired consulting firm BMSC to help achieve certification. Chris says, “Mark had so many great things to say about BMSC, owned by Bretta Kelly. He was so positive about the impact it was having on his business, and how it wasn’t nearly as difficult as he thought it would be, that I made the decision to contact BMSC.” Chris and his team were very impressed with BMSC, and they contracted with her a couple of years ago. “We got very busy, we were growing so fast, that we put the brakes on ISO certification back then”, he says. “Working together with James Maldonado, Chris and James re-engaged with them this past summer, and within a few months, we successfully achieved certification”, he says. “Everyone at our company participated in the certification process, and they did an exceptional job”, Chris says. Opinion: Product Safety Awareness — Differentiating this from Personal Safety Bretta Kelly, Owner BMSC, LLC Josh Kelly: Illustrations Employee Awareness of Product Safety is a new requirement to the AS9100D Standard. The requirement in Section 7.3 of the Standard makes it mandatory that every employee becomes familiar with it. There have been complications recently due to the AS9100D Standard’s ambiguous expectations for employee awareness; this ambiguity can be attributed to the rise of inconsistent training, questioning, and comprehension among Aerospace employees and auditors alike. Product Safety is a longstanding requirement in the AS9110 standards for maintenance, repair and overhaul. Product Safety involves an awareness of the potential consequences a final product deemed dysfunctional o r hazardous can caus e. While employees generally comprehend Product Safety, many are not accustomed to it being a requirement. Historically, Product Safety has not been treated as an urgent topic and has existed in the shadow of Personal Safety instead. A typical aerospace company has numerous procedures in place that are intended to keep the customer safe long after the product has been delivered. These processes include the removal of protruding wires and sharp edges to prevent a potential injury. Employees can find themselves in a situation where they are familiar with the procedures themselves but fail to answer questions about the procedure’s purpose correctly; this is likely because employees are still unfamiliar with the new standard, and the structure of the question itself can lead to uncertainty regarding what category of safety-precaution the procedure would fall under. Personal Safety is often at the forefront of the employee’s mind at all times, and they are instructed to follow strict guidelines to maintain a level of caution. It is included within the employee’s training who they should report to, what type of hazards to be aware of, when they should wear specific kinds of safety equipment, where to safely dispose of dangerous materials.The employee is also trained about why they engage in specific procedures, the issue arises when they are not informed about the different types of safety precautions. Employees are aware of what they need to do to stay safe while the product is A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

being made, this does not mean they do not also know what they need to do so that others are safe when the product is completed. Auditors have noted a pattern of failure to differentiate between Product and Personal Safety when interviewed. In a presentation at the Aerospace Users Group recently about the new AS9100 Product Safety requirements, auditors were instructed to make observations for a one-time error and any further confusion about Personal and Product Safety would result in a non-conformance. In my opinion, this is not an example of auditing for conformity, it is seeking out a nonconformance. Questions that require knowledge about the actual process of making a safe product are more effective than those that test whether an employee knows the correct terminology for safety procedures. For example, if an auditor were to ask an employee “are you aware of what you do here that impacts the Product Safety of the finished product customers purchase?”, the employee is informed about what procedures the question is referencing. Additionally, an employee could be redirected from a clear miscommunication, an example would be “what procedures take place to keep the product safe after its been shipped?” This direct line of questioning would allow the employee to differentiate making a safe product from staying safe while a product is being made. Since many products have numerous stages that take place before completion, the individual being questioned could instead recount the processes that make the final product safe, without regard to their safety or their fellow employees’ safety. In the event that an employee is instructed that they are confusing Personal and Product Safety, the ratio of correct to incorrect answers would surely improve if the employee was given clarification about the difference, or if the questions were clarified to offer context. Most employees can recount all the different safety-related procedures the company requires with ease; if asked plainly about Product Safety and what they do about it, an individual may not know that there is a term for safety-procedures that keep other people safe. The only way to prevent this issue as an employer or an employee is to become familiar with the differences between Product Safety and Personal Safety, and to become as familiar as they can with examples of both of them.
Bills to Strengthen Career Counseling, allow 529s for Training, Credentials On December 6, U.S. House Representatives Abigail Spanberger (D-VA) and Rob Wittman (R-VA) introduced bipartisan legislation allowing students and workers to use 529 education savings plans for workforce training and credentialing programs. The legislation allows 529 payments to pay for credentialing programs recognized by a state government or the federal government—or widely recognized as providing reputable credentials in the occupation. Senators earlier this year introduced similar legislation.

Separately, in November, the co-chairs of the Congressional Career and Technical Education (CTE) Caucus, Congressmen Jim Langevin (D-RI) and Glenn “GT” Thompson (R-PA), announced the Counseling for Career Choice Act. This bipartisan legislation amends the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) by providing grants to states in order to assist in the implementation of statewide career counseling frameworks. In addition, the bill will leverage input from community stakeholders, such as educators and businesses, on how to improve statewide career counseling frameworks.
House Democrats and Trump Administration Reach Agreement on New NAFTA On December 10, 2019, surrounded by fellow Democrats, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi announced she had reached an agreement with the Trump administration on changes demanded by House Democrats and unions to the new NAFTA, known as the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). The AFL-CIO confirmed they will support the updated agreement, a significant boost to its prospects of generating a significant number of votes in favor by House Democrats. U.S.Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and White House advisor Jared Kushner flew to Mexico to formally finalize the new terms of the agreement that the Mexican Senate is approving. House Democrats sought changes to provisions covering the environment, labor enforcement in Mexico, and generic prescription drugs.While details have yet to emerge, a last minute push by the Trump administration may lead to a requirement that automakers purchase 70 percent of steel smelted within North America to qualify for zero tariffs starting five years after the agreement enters into force. It remains unlikely the U.S. House of Representatives will hold a vote on the new NAFTA in 2019, but likely will begin consideration at least at the committee level later this week or early next. The administration must also formally send to Congress a text, starting a timeline under which both the House and Senate must both vote. This sets up a possible vote by the house, then the Senate in 2020. Most sources indicate the new NAFTA will likely easily pass the Senate but questions remain about how many Democrats will vote in the House to provide President Trump this significant victory, which needs at least 218 members of the House of Representatives to pass and be sent to the Senate for approval.

When University of California at Berkeley students go on winter break, an army of Kiwibot delivery robots will be doing the same. Changed bots with new features will return in the new year. Between Dec. 15 and Jan. 21, the army of cute Kiwibots that roll throughout Cal’s campus delivering food, groceries, and supplies will go dormant because 90% of its customer base will be gone, said Diana Leano, a Kiwi official, told the San Francisco Business Times. The service pausing during school breaks is nothing new and is used to conduct maintenance and make changes on the robots. This time, Kiwibot is planning to roll out changes to the robot and its service, Leano said. Stephanie Falla, head of growth for Kiwibot, said that the startup has been working on reinventing Kiwi over the past few months.
