Editor’s Corner We Are Privileged To Be American, USA Citizens We can take most freedoms the other humans of the world hold dear, but do not possess, for granted. We all have lapses in memory as to the many trials and tribulations our forefathers had in molding this country into a home of the brave, and into a melting pot of religions and cultures that we all welcome in the new world. Freedom of beliefs and worship came over on many boats, and not many were free of scurvy, and long days at sea took a toll on many freedom seekers. Many people have fought long and hard to be a part of the freedom movement in the United States and many continue to fight and die for the many freedoms we all hold dear. Then there are the multitudes from all other countries that yearn to be a member of this free world and will do anything to get here and breathe the freedom that exists in our homeland. We have a fight in front of us now and it is multifaceted. The invisible enemy is Covid-19, the visible enemy is the plague that attacks us in the guise of reform, the guise of righteousness, and the guise of ‘free stuff’. In the USA we all work hard to maintain our freedom and a quality of living our relatives before us may not have enjoyed. We also want these benefits for our offspring and abundantly. We must remember where we came from. Once rooted in our heritage, we must grow and share the fruits of a free society with all of our American family, so that we can share it with the other fellow humans on planet Earth. We sometimes need a few phrases to show us how we may have wandered off our path. These little blurbs sure made me see a few things a little clearer. I’ll share them with you… • Somehow it’s un-American for the census to count how many Americans are in America. • People who have never owned slaves should pay slavery reparations to people who have never been slaves. • People who have never been to college should pay the debts of college students who took out huge loans for their degrees. • Immigrants with tuberculosis and polio are welcome, but you’d better be able to prove your dog is vaccinated. • $5 billion for border security is too expensive, but $1.5 trillion for “free” health care is not. • If you cheat to get into college you go to prison, but if you cheat to get into the country you go to college for free. • People who say there is no such thing as gender are demanding a female Vice President. • Some people are held responsible for things that happened before they were born, and other people are not held responsible for what they are doing right now. In closing I want to encourage you all the keep your eyes on the prize,‘American Freedom’!We all work very hard for it and we must continue to walk the walk and show the up and coming Americans how this wonderful game is played and why it’s rules are important to fair play. Thank you all for supporting our three regional Manufacturing Magazines and please allow us to help you gain more market share and exposure through our 30,000 readers. God bless our great people in the USA! A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST

Announcements & Releases Don’t Just Weather The Storm. I think we can all agree that 2020 has not gone as planned and continues to hit us with the unexpected. Some predict that the economy will take years to recover and that we will see many closures of businesses on the horizon. What does that mean for manufacturing? That means many opportunities will be available soon if they aren’t already presenting themselves. From equipment to commercial real estate, reshoring production or resourcing for a number of reasons. Now is the time to be seeking out these opportunities. There is a number of ways you can use this time to strengthen your position for the future. You can review your teams and make sure you have no single points of failure. Meaning that you have a back up plan for every key person and/or process in your organization. Secondly you can take a deep dive into your key processes using lean principals and highlight or eliminate any wastes found. Lastly you can help others find success. The universe has a funny way of giving to those that spend their time giving to others. In times like these it is easy to be in a fight or flight mode and the quote that I keep getting reminded of is the one that states “don’t just go through it, grow through it.” This is a good reminder to not sit back and just weather the storm. Push past it and thrive! A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

Introducing the AERISI™ Wine Aerating System After 50 plus years of developing productivity and CNC automation solutions for the machine tool industry, Mike Cayley, Sr., founder of Midaco Corporation, has developed a solution to enhance one of his personal passions… enjoying the flavor and aroma of wine the way it was meant to be. How do you get to the prime of your wine experience? It’s all about aerating. Wine needs to “breathe”. Aerating offers your wine the opportunity to both oxidize the good stuff (deep breaths in) and evaporate the unnecessary stuff (ahh, exhale). The result is a smoother, more refined taste, showing off the oaky, jammy, slight citrus or more emboldened notes of your favorite wine. The AERISI™ Wine Aerating System, by Metal Shapes Inc., treats your favorite wine

PIE has a written application online or founders can upload pitch decks. The second group open for applications is the Westside Startup Challenge, which offers investment, mentorship and support through the Oregon Technology Business Center in Beaverton. This program selects five startups and invests $25,000 in each of them. Applications are available online and the deadline is Sept. 15.

The Westside Challenge program starts in January and organizers hope startups will be able to work out of the business center. Otherwise, the mentoring will be done virtually. Both organizations are important parts of the local startup ecosystem. Alums include Liquid Wire, Cliqa, Cloudability and Lytics.

For PIE, this next cohort is once again a tweak in the experiment. This time to create a wholly virtual accelerator. General Manager Rick Turoczy expects about 80 percent of the program to remain unchanged — mentoring sessions, peer-to-peer support and speakers. One big difference he expects is a more structured experience with more scheduled meetings rather than organic discussions. So far, all of the group’s mentors have stayed on board to continue helping the next class of startups. Within the three different cohorts of PIE,Turoczy expects about 10 startups will be selected for each. So far, applications for this round of PIE are in line with previous years.

CA Based Freewire Unveils Device To Charge Electric Car In 15 Minutes
STACKS ON STACKS
Ready for an unstoppable money-making tandem? This is the NHP 5000 with RPS. On its own, the NHP 5000 is a powerful 40 taper, 500mm pallet horizontal machining center. But when teamed with the stackable multi-level Rotary Pallet System (RPS), it becomes legendary. With a compact floor layout and vertical structure, the RPS keeps you running lights out—without taking up valuable square footage. And if projects change constantly from month to month, JIT scheduling on the RPS cuts setup times like 15,000 r/min cuts aluminum. The 3-tier, 21-pallet RPS is the perfect partner for the massive metal removal of the NHP 5000. So buckle up, because you’re about to produce day in and night out.
Last month , the maker of super fast electric car charging devices FreeWire Technologies, based out of San Leandro, installed its first charging station at an ampm gas station in Lodi, California, just off State Highway 99 between Stockton and Sacramento. FreeWire CEO Arcady Sosinov told me the ampm now has the “fastest electric car charger in Lodi,” which I am not sure is saying much, no offense Lodi. Regardless, a typical electric car driver can juice his car from empty to full charge in 15 minutes for about $21, Sosinov said. But the real value is for the “site host” or gas station that buys one of these Boost Chargers. Because the charger uses battery-integrated technology to power the device, it can be installed “effectively as simple as plugging in a refrigerator” and at a fraction of what it cost to install a charging system that needs to be connect to the grid, which cost tens of thousands of dollars, said Sosinov, noting that it also has a 20 times smaller carbon footprint than a traditional charger. The Boost Charger draws a very low

amount of power from the grid, making it a much more affordable option to install for retail customers like gas stations or shopping centers. As such, the site host can pass the savings to the consumer, Sosinov said. FreeWire offers a mobile charging station, which costs the price of a Tesla and a $1,000 year for the software. Sosinov said the mobile charger is in use in parking lots around the world, including at big-name tech companies here in the Bay Area like Linkedin, Google and Netflix. Interestingly, the electric mobility startup in the old Chrysler and Dodge manufacturing building in San Leandro. In April, Freewire coffers were super charged with a $25 million Series B, led by BP Ventures. In total, the company has raised $40 million. In partnership with BP, the rollout of these super fast charging stations will be at gas stations that are in between cities. A number of more stations will be deployed in the coming months, and though specifics are sparse, the next two will be in Oklahoma. But don’t expect to drive from Lodi to there on a single charge. The jet maker is offering its aerospace suppliers, large and small, a mix of advance payments, additional work across business lines and ways to get paid for manufacturing work faster as it works to keep the 12,000 companies in its supply chain solvent and open for business. “Certainly, the suppliers have been a big priority for us from day one, and certainly once Covid kicked in, we really amplified our effort with the supply chain and through all of this continued to pay them,” Boeing CFO Greg Smith said during a recent call with aerospace reporters.Smith says that keeping its supply chain healthy is a “big focus” for Boeing, whether the company helps small businesses directly A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

A major supplier, Kansas-based Spirit Aerosystems Holdings, which makes fuselages for 737 Max and other Boeing jets, landed a financial aid deal in the first quarter of 2020. It received $225 million, including $70 million right away for its built-up inventory of 737 Max fuselages. The remaining $155 million represented “an incremental prepayment for costs and shipset deliveries over the next two years,” Spirit disclosed in a securities filing. Other smaller suppliers in Seattle are also getting help. One said that after layoffs at its facility, Boeing’s procurement staff helped their company get more opportunities to bid on Boeing work across its different divisions. A second supplier said Boeing offered a deal with its banker, Citibank, to get paid much faster in exchange for Citi getting a small cut.A third supplier in Washington state said Boeing helped their company get a government loan after their own efforts failed and they were grateful for that help. Survey Says Underused Apprenticeship Programs Prove Their Worth Amid COVID-19 Skill Shortages
CMM Revo Half Page Final.indd 1
Thomas has released the results of a survey canvassing 746 North American manufacturing and industrial suppliers to identify the major trends stemming from the global pandemic as the industrial sector pivots its supply chains and tactics to prepare for the new industrial landscape. A key survey finding shows the value of apprenticeship programs in combating the skills gap: 26% of companies surveyed have adopted such programs, and those that have were overall less impacted by the lack of available skilled labor.
4/6/2020 2:04:17 PM “As companies work to adapt and implement the most impactful practices to support the industrial economy, the survey also shows expanding interest in automation, pivoting supply chains, and addressing the labor shortage.”
More than half of the respondents indicated that they meet or exceed industry standards on automation processes. The top three automation technologies that manufacturers are most interested to invest in over the next 12 months are production performance (55%), product testing and quality assurance (48%), and process control (46%).
The survey also indicates that while 91% of manufacturers are confident the industry will recover, many predict it will take months to several years to earn back the lost revenue.
Nearly 70% of respondents report that they are extremely likely to bring production/sourcing back to North America in the future. Additionally, the top products North American manufacturers are looking to source domestically include metals (15%), machining tools and parts (13%), fabricated materials (13%), and personal protective equipment (12%).
“Manufacturing and industrial companies continue to demonstrate remarkable innovation and resilience to overcome the challenges brought on by COVID-19. Our latest survey shows interest in reshoring acceleration,” said Thomas President/CEO Tony Uphoff.
More than one in three companies report they are actively hiring. Additionally, while 52% of companies have continued their apprenticeship programs during the pandemic, 40% report they have paused their programs in place and only 3% have ended them.

“WiBotic will use the Series A funding to accelerate the company’s growth, expand our sales team, advance hardware and software engineering, and fulfill increased customer demand,” WiBotic CEO Ben Waters said in a news release.
Seattle Startup WiBotic Raises $5.7M For Wireless Drone And Robot Charging
WiBotic said it aims to help companies scale-up their robotic fleets rapidly, while also improving robot inservice time by reducing recurring charging and maintenance costs.
WiBo t i c , a S e a t t l e company that specializes in wireless charging and power optimizing systems for aerial drones and mobile and marine robots, says it has secured $5.7 million in Series A funding.
A recent report by ABI Research on commercial and industrial robotics estimated that this market could be worth $277 billion by 2030. As WiBotic grows, it’s expanding it’s board, the company said. Coolfire Solutions’ Chief Revenue Officer Mark Rogers was appointed as a WiBotic director. He brings extensive expertise partnering with startups to enhance sales strategies and revenue streams.
The company said its latest investors include Junson Capital, SV Tech Ventures, Rolling Bay Ventures, Aves Capital, The W Fund and WRF Capital, and others.
Rogers was an officer at Mendix, a startup acquired acquired by Siemens. He also had senior roles with two Microsoft programs.
The round comes after the startup raised $2.5 million in seed funding in 2017 from China-based Tsing Capital, which led the round, and investments from Bay Area firms Comet Labs and Digi Labs.
Waters said Rogers’ experience will help contribute to the startup’s technology and business growth. By Andrew McIntosh, Puget Sound Business Journal A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

Arcimoto Snares Patent As Pandemic Revival Continues EV-maker Arcimoto has received a patent for its Fun Utility Ve h i c l e d e s i g n , boosting a stock price already on the rise since midMarch. The patent for the Eugene company’s “narrow ultra efficient threewheeled vehicle with automotive class feel,” as it’s officially described, is both validation and protection, CEO Mark Frohnmayer said. “It speaks to what separates us from other vehicles in the marketplace, our platform that allows for two large adults and stuff, or one large adult and a lot of stuff, and that is not much bigger than a motorcycle,” Frohnmayer said. “This is the patent that underpins all our products. As a smaller new vehicle entrant, having intellectual property protection is important. We don’t want a big player to come in and roll over us.” After shutting down production completely in March — at about the time its stock had sunk to an all-time low $0.97 — Arcimoto returned to “low-volume production” in May. workforce is on the job, some in the Eugene factory, others at home working on plans to scale up production. Arcimoto’s Nasdaq-traded stock closed at $3.47 on Wednesday, up more 32 percent since the patent news came out a day earlier, but it has been climbing steadily since the Deliverator emerged this spring as the company’s big growth play. Frohnmayer said that more of the vehicles, outfitted for deliveries but also promoted for general utility use, have gone out for pilot testing. The company also announced that it would work with the Michigan firm Munro & Associates “to evaluate Arcimoto’s manufacturing processes and supply chain management in order to drive down costs and begin high-volume production of Arcimoto ultra-efficient electric vehicles.” Munro & Associates is headed up by Sandy Munro, who has been in the news recently for his reverse engineering of Tesla vehicles, including the new Model Y, shared recently in a series of YouTube videos. “Often appearing on-camera in a face mask, Mr. Munro has become an EV folk hero during the pandemic, genially detailing the Y’s breakthroughs while reminding the ‘boys and girls’ watching to ‘tip those cashiers,’” the Wall Street Journal reported. State of the Art Manufacturing By John Higgins, Marketing Manager, Ace Wire Spring & Form Advanced Manufacturing is a priority at Ace Wire Spring & Form, staying up to date on modern manufacturing techniques. Ace Wire Spring is investing in the company’s future by purchasing state of the art machinery for its employees to work with. One of the machines purchased and installed has caused some excitement within the company, it is a robot. Late last year Ace Wire Spring purchased and installed a robotic arm for use on the shop floor. The robot is currently programed for a project need involving an intricate, multistep production process which includes forming wire into metal hooks, passing them as bulk material into bins, and pressing the ends of them. These hooks are ultimately used in a swivel hook extension spring. A key part of the production process involves moving a single hook out of a cluttered pile — a classic bin picking task that was previously performed manually at Ace. But unlike simpler bin picking applications, it quickly became clear that grasping a hook from a pile can be exceedingly complicated; the hooks are dumped into the bin and often get tangled. The robot reaches into a bin of metal hooks, picks up one hook, is able to sense if the hooks are tangled, untangles them if needed, and then places the hook into a press for the end to be swedged. Once done, the hook is then placed in the box of completed hooks. With the use of the robotic arm, Ace Wire Spring has created a high-speed, low-cost advantage, with consistent quality and savings that can be passed on to the customer. Also, workforce efficiency is improved, there is less downtime, and safer working conditions for the employees exist. The employees can now concentrate on less mundane tasks by working on projects that they are trained for. This leads to a higher output, better performance, and creation of quality products. Grasping one hook at a time manually is a time-consuming, monotonous task that used to take skilled workers at AceWire Spring away from their core tasks for hours at a time. Now moving a single hook out of a cluttered pile and into the press by hand is a thing of the past at the company’s factory.
Why Choose Ace Wire Spring Ace Wire Spring and Form Company offers manufacturers a distinct advantage over other companies when it comes to manufacturing springs and wire forms. the tolerance is maintained for each spring. Tolerance is the key to our unique advantage, and it is essential to understand what specific tolerance is required to meet your application. Standard tolerance springs are accurate to a wider margin of specifications than custom springs. These springs are acceptable for non-critical applications but are not made to meet the demands of critical applications. Higher tolerances require the specifications and techniques used to manufacture the spring are more rigid and therefore are designed to meet the needs of critical applications. A tighter tolerance also demands that the production of the spring is monitored to produce accurate repeatability and that each spring meets the higher tolerance. Standard springs are not held to this level of accuracy and may vary in dimension or strength and thus may not be appropriate for the application. AceWire Spring & Form Company (www.acewirespring.com) has manufactured custom precision springs for diverse applications since 1939.The ISO Certified/ITAR registered company develops and manufactures a wide variety of compression springs, extension springs, torsion springs, and wire forms. By comparison, American companies now dominate many parts of the global chip industry. They account for around half of the world’s chip sales, while US equipment makers are behind much of the complex technology used to design and manufacture chips. That has left the US with a choke hold over the global electronics industry, enabling it to threaten serious damage to Huawei and other Chinese companies it views as hostile. Yet that has not prevented rising worries in Washington over a looming vulnerability, as trade tensions rise, as well as industry calls for billions of dollars of taxpayer support. Many advanced chips are designed in the US, but only around 12 per cent are manufactured there. The gap has left politicians more concerned than they were about competition with Japan, said Dan Hutcheson, chairman ofVLSI Research and a longtime chip analyst. “Finally, the US has decided to assert itself,” he said.

Rising tensions with China have also underlined the potential weakness stemming from US dependence on other Asian countries to make its chips. At the center is Taiwan’s TSMC, a foundry, which makes chips for US concerns like Nvidia, Qualcomm and AMD.

There is no mystery behind the anxiety. China is still years behind the US in semiconductors, but it is racing to develop a globally competitive chip industry and is projected to become a serious competitor by the end of the decade.
The rising tension in the electronics industry has served as “a wake-up call”, even if there is no immediate need for taxpayer support, added Sean Randolph, senior director at the Bay Area Council Economic Institute. “Global supply chains seem to be tightening, particularly in critical or strategic technologies, and chips are at or near the top of that list,” he said. As if to underline the growing precariousness of America’s silicon dependence, Intel — long the symbol of the country’s leadership in chip production — shocked the industry with the disclosure that it had fallen a full year behind schedule in the process technology needed to make its next generation of chips. The slip has forced it to look into contracting out its most advanced manufacturing, with TSMC the only company to have mastered the necessary technology.

engineers to create a virtual representation of a part, machine or process. GE is already using the technology to monitor jet engines, gas turbines and many other assets and systems. The GE Research team will use its digital twin to simulate scenarios that nuclear facilities experience in real life to determine what needs to be monitored, where sensors should be placed and how best to detect wear and other potential problems in the system, says Abhinav Saxena, a senior AI scientist at GE Research and digital twin expert. The sensors themselves add another layer of complexity; they can also degrade or require recalibration, and the GE Research team will study how they might be monitored and maintained remotely. Correctly analyzing all of the incoming data is paramount, says Saxena, given the nature of the energy source. That’s why the GE Research team is planning to use its “humble AI” software. Humble AI is a machine learning program GE is developing to monitor incoming information, draw conclusions based on that information and notice when certain data are missing. The AI package will then ask for more data or for human input, while also predicting the accuracy of the conclusions it has drawn — essentially telling engineers when AI might be wrong, and the likelihood of that outcome. Information about the accuracy of readouts coming from sensors adds another level of safety. Ultimately, by further developing this software package, GE hopes to provide predictive maintenance capabilities that determine whether a component needs to be fixed right away or whether maintenance can be deferred until scheduled, thereby optimizing cost and safety of maintenance operations.
Virtual Energy: Artificial Intelligence Will Help Run Nuclear Reactors Of The Future

power plants can produce huge amounts of electricity while keeping their carbon footprints at relatively low levels, compared to power stations that burn fossil fuels. But building, maintaining and operating a nuclear plant is also relatively expensive. To make sure these plants remain competitive, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency energy division (ARPA-E) has scientists at GE Research helping to find a way to reduce operations and maintenance costs at such facilities to a mere $2 per megawatt-hour when engineers start designing the next-generation of advanced reactors. That’s a tall order, given that operators can spend more than 10 times that amount to keep their nuclear plants up and running. The DOE is betting that, by automating some tasks with artificial intelligence, nuclear facilities could reduce their operating expenses in the future. Last month, ARPA-E awarded grants to a group that includes GE Research, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Argonne National Laboratory, the University of Michigan and others to conduct a three-year study on how AI and computer simulations can help monitor and maintain nuclear reactors — part of a program dubbed Generating Electricity Managed by Intelligent Nuclear Assets, or GEMINA. For the project, the GE Research team will use a highly detailed virtual model of a new GE Hitachi reactor. Slated to begin by September, the study will test these and other technologies. Saxena says that discoveries made along the way will undoubtedly lead to cost savings for power plants in the future, and that’s really what ARPA-E is going for. “This is a very futuristic, forward-looking program,” he says.
IRS Announces Rule Updating Small Business Taxpayer Exceptions On July 30, the IRS sent out a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) updating several tax accounting regulations to adopt the simplified tax accounting rules for small businesses under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA). Of importance to One Voice members, the simplified tax accounting rules will increase the level of its “gross receipts test” which allows businesses to use the cash method of accounting. Under the proposed rule, a business meets this test if its inflation-adjusted average gross receipts for the three-tax-year period ending immediately before the current taxable year do not exceed $25 million (adjusted for inflation to $26 million for tax years beginning in 2019 and 2020). Before theTCJA, the gross receipts test only applied if the business’s average annual gross receipts for all prior taxable years did not exceed $5 million. This is a major victory for our members as One Voice lobbied extensively to the increase the $5 million level. Now that the rule is published in the Federal Register, the agency has started a 45-day public comment period ending on September 14.

Can you bring us up to date on where you stand with replacing the Turkish suppliers on the F135 engine, especially with the Integrated Bladed Rotors (IBR)? We launched [theTurkey supplier replacement] program well over a year ago. The [bottom line] is we have 188 critical parts that needed to be replaced. A dozen of those are in the IBR—a very, very critical technology. And we’re on track with our commitment to have everything requalified by the first quarter of 2021. COVID-19’s putting some delays in there, but we have some buffer in our schedule. So we’re on track with qualification. In fact, about 128 out of 188 parts are complete and ready to transition. Our commitment to the [F-35] Joint Program Office is to have the transition done at rate by the time we get Lot 15 engines, and we’re on track for that. [The pandemic] slowed us down about 2-3 months, but we had some scheduled buffer, so we’re able to absorb that and maintain the target. Where are you with the Adaptive Engine Transition Program (AETP), also known as the XA101? Do you see it as an all-new engine, or at least one that could provide an option for a next-generation fighter, as well as potentially a longer-term re-engine option for F-35, should that evolve? Where are you with balancing that work? Are you slowing down? Not at all. We are as focused as ever on AETP. Our XA101, we firmly believe, is the future of fighter propulsion and the future of military engines. The question just is when, and we are laser-focused on our first engine to test. We’re racing with our program office to that milestone, [and we’re] thrilled with how the technology has progressed—both through [the preceding Advanced Technology Engine Demonstration] and some of the early stages of AETP. We think the technology—whether it’s in the entire AETP incarnation, XA101 with the third-stream architecture, or some elements that we’ve developed—make that whole system work the way the services want. As an engine provider, my goal is to provide options, and if I can, provide an option that meets the needs in an agile fashion, that takes a subset of AETP technologies and creates an upgrade to an F135 potentially—or even an F119 [for the F-22] or an F100 [for the F-15 and F-16]—that’s a home run for [the Defense Department]. Some AETP upgrades just don’t necessarily fit in a smaller, mid-thrust engine like an F100. Putting a third stream on that size of engine could be possible, but it’s going to be tough with the additional weight and complexity of it. By taking some of the advanced systems—
mechanicals, power and thermal management, controls, a world-class compressor and turbine, in addition to the third stream architecture—we can leverage that technology to upgrade F100s or F119s. So I’m super-excited about that. We hope to provide similar solutions both with an upgraded F100, which is an early conversation, and an F119. As people look at the F-22 Raptor in 2040, they ask: “What do we need out of the engine?” I tell my technologists at GatorWorks: “You guys have all the Legos on a shelf.” And the Legos are the various technologies we put into the different engines. I challenge them: “How do you pull the Legos off?” That’s what GatorWorks is designed to do. A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

But some analysts, who have seen many military designs die in the notorious “valley of death” between prototyping and large-scale production, are skeptical of the approach. Others think it might better suit unmanned aircraft.

Citing the way the car industry tweaks and improves designs, Roper aims to marry cutting-edge digital design techniques with a proposal that hearkens to the Century Series program of the 1950s. “The idea behind the [original] Century Series was to develop new designs very quickly, build them and evaluate them, and then go right to the next design that incorporates the lessons from the previous design,” Bryan Clark, a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, told The Epoch Times. “The idea would be maybe the first one, the F-100, was going to be a traditional jet fighter-bomber aircraft, and then the next one might be an interceptor that designed mostly to attack enemy bombers.” “After they built these half-dozen fighters, the idea would be well,‘OK, we’ve learned a lot about jet propulsion, we know more about supersonic flight, and by looking at the collection of fighters we have, we can decide what are the ones we want to build as a main jet fighter of the future for the Air Force.’ “They’re going to basically redo this approach … to develop the successor to the F-35,” Clark said. The new program, called the Digital Century Series, is just one of several lines of effort that may churn out the next generations of fighter jets.

At present, typically, the Air Force develops a concept for a new aircraft, perhaps influenced by demonstration aircraft or two, then puts it out for competition. Competing designs are submitted, then a winning prototype is selected for production.Assuming the political winds continue blowing in the right direction, that design will then go on to be produced in numbers. Even then, the first aircraft rolling off the line still have to jump through further testing hoops before being fully integrated into the force.

From concept to flying in combat might typically take 20 years.
He emphasizes the importance of the “digital thread”—a cutting-edge way of tracking and incorporating design changes and feedback that reduces the need for prototype and real-world testing.
But that approach doesn’t fit today’s rapid pace of technological innovation, Roper says.He likens the
The Army, too, has been trying to hack the slow-moving acquisitions cycle, trying to get still-developing kit into soldiers’ hands to tighten feedback circles, running testing and development in parallel instead of series, and setting ambitious time-frames.
A continual process of development makes it harder for adversaries to make decisions about their own weapon’s development because they cannot get a clear picture of the strategic environment. In the past, “technology gains were hard-fought, so you could rest on them longer,” Roper says. Today, however, he says “technology is cheap, ubiquitous, fast happening all the time, and happening 80 percent outside of government. “The model has to change because technology is everywhere. And we don’t know which technology is going to be the next big mover and shaker on the battlefield, there may be multiple ones. The speed at which we do it, the agility by which we do it are the most important things in this century.” Improvements to computer modeling reduce the need for expensive, timeconsuming prototyping, and can even model production line assembly and maintenance, Roper says.
The military is revamping as a whole to align with the 2018 National Defense Strategy, which placed renewed competition with Russia and China as the top priority. This “great power competition” reaches far beyond the battlefield to include foreign policy, economics, intellectual property protection, and public relations. Analysts have increasingly called for a whole-ofgovernment approach in the race for supremacy. One common theme of modernization is the development of unmanned systems that can potentially collaborate with human counterparts. The Air Force is prototyping this kind of concept with Skyborg, its so-called unmanned wingman program. Clark thinks unmanned aircraft are a much more natural fit for the Digital Century Series than the current, more ambitious goals. One of the reasons, he says, is that the series will produce various modular components that will be mixed and matched to produce new aircraft. A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

Unprecedented? You Bet! Unprecedented circumstances. Uncertain times. Unusual environment. New normal. These phrases may feel overused at this point, but they all fit. After all, the pandemic has upended much of what manufacturers have always known about business as usual. Regardless of the catch phrase, today’s manufacturers are in a position where realizing sustainable success is going to depend on their ability to embrace a unique blend of agility, determination, strategy and cautious optimism. All qualities that typically define successful businesses, but today’s circumstances have added a twist. Understandably, the recipe will differ from company to company. Yet, technology is sure to play a pivotal role in helping manufacturers navigate this COVID-19 induced reality in two ways: providing awareness and fostering innovation. Providing Awareness. One of the keys to effectively reopening manufacturing operations is to keep employees safe, primarily through increased sanitation efforts and social distancing. However, let’s face it, there will still be interactions resulting in people coming into contact with one another. This is where the growing array of contact tracing technologies are playing an instrumental role. Despite the security and privacy concerns naturally associated with “big brother” style monitoring, the use of wearable trackers or AI enhanced vision technology can help manufacturers quickly pinpoint who is at risk if/when an employee tests positive.
:2015
If properly sourced, these technologies can remain viable long after the need for contact tracing dissipates. For instance, manufacturers can easily repurpose these same investments to help track materials and strengthen the in-house supply system.

Fostering Innovation. According to the results of Fictiv’s 2020 State of Manufacturing Report, COVID-19 has negatively harmed most businesses (89%), sales are down (44%), cost of materials and components have increased (41%) and production times have lengthened (41%). The stats do not paint a pretty picture.Yet, opportunities often surface in the face of diversity. As manufacturers across the globe were forced into remote work situations overnight, it understandably created challenges that some businesses were not ready to accommodate.Yet, many manufacturers found creative new ways to leverage internal resources (pivoting operators and leveraging 3D printers to meet immediate market needs), or tapping into connected systems to enable remote operations in ways the manufacturer did not realize existed. In each instance, having the right technology in place enables innovation. Going back to the survey results, nearly all (97%) respondents said COVID-19 has created new opportunities, with 87% making digital transformation a high priority. Reducing cost (46%), increasing supply chain visibility (42%) and driving efficiencies (40%) are some of the top goals for these digital efforts. Of course, deploying technology has a cost, and for many manufacturers justifying that cost can quickly become a seemingly insurmountable barrier. At least in normal times. However, we are truly in unprecedented times . Today’s digital technologies are truly transformative. Now is not the time
to try to make do with what’s already in place. Now is the time to take strategic action. Source: Industry Week, By Peter Fretty
Supersonic Jet Maker To Roll Out Prototype This Fall Boom Supersonic, the aerospace startup which is building the world’s first supersonic passenger jetliner since the Concorde, said it will roll its smaller scale, demonstrator jet this fall. Known as the XB-1, the Boom Supersonic scale prototype of its future passenger jet will be used to demonstrate key technologies for Overture, the name of Boom’s full-scale commercial airliner, including its advanced carbon fiber composite construction, computer-optimized aerodynamics, and its supersonic propulsion system, the company said. Boom will roll out the demonstrator jet on Oct. 7 and begin tests later in 2020, followed by a first flight in 2021, according to Boom founder and CEO Blake Scholl. The jets are only concept airplanes for now, but the supersonics proposed by Boom Supersonic, Boeing-bcked Aerion and Spike Aerospace offer a glimpse into the future of air travel.Boom Supersonic is currently building a scaled prototype jet, the XB-, or what the company call the Baby Boom. It is scheduled to fly later this year. Despite challenges, Boom has taken several successful steps to move its airplane project forward in the past year.Launched in 2014, Boom recruited and hired a team of 140-plus full-time employees and has raised well over $100 million to develop its jet. Boom Supersonic said that because of the pandemic, it will host a virtual rollout event to offer aviation enthusiasts and potential buyers a first look at the completed aircraft and hear from its team of aircraft designer and manufacturers. Boom’s website is accepting requests from those who want to participate in the virtual event. By Andrew McIntosh – Puget Sound Business Journal
How Oregon Projects Are Helping Apple Reach Its Green Goals Apple Inc. is committing to 100 percent carbon neutrality through its supply chain and products by 2030, and is highlighting contributions from two Oregon renewable energy projects in its latest environmental report. Recently, Apple cited the Montague Wind Power Facility as a significant
new renewable energy contributor in its portfolio. Apple enabled construction of the 200-megawatt Gilliam County wind farm, which went online last October, through a long-term power purchase agreement with Portland-based Avangrid Renewables. At the same time, Apple contracted for power from a 56-megawatt (AC) solar power plant, which went online in 2017 near its Prineville data center. The projects were rare departures from PacifiCorp service in Oregon through the state’s long-term direct access program, which allows big power users to buy their energy from independent electricity service suppliers. Doing so requires paying exit fees approved by the Public Utility Commission, fees that one business group said are “structured in a way that makes it essentially uneconomic for all but the richest customers, who really don’t care about cost,” to use long-term direct access. Utilities and residential ratepayer advocates say the fees help avoid shifting grid investment costs from the departing companies to remaining utility customers. Together the Oregon wind and solar plants produce around 700 gigawatthours of electricity annually, far more than the 254 gigawatt-hours that the data center uses, suggesting the Oregon resources are helping offset Apple energy use elsewhere. Small hydroelectric projects and smaller solar projects had made the Prineville facility fully powered by renewables before the wind farm went into operation.By Pete Danko – Portland Business Journal A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

Bath Iron Works, IAM Local S6 Reach Agreement to End Strike
The agreement ends a strike of more than 4,300 shipbuilders that has been going since June 22. Late August 7, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local S6 negotiating committee reached a tentative agreement with General Dynamic’s Bath IronWorks. While still subject to ratification by union members, the tentative agreement will allow the union’s members return to work building ships following a lengthy strike over wage disagreements and changes to the pension and subcontractor rules. According to General Dynamics, roughly 4,300 union members participated in the strike at its Bath, Maine shipyard, which began June 22. According to General Dynamics, the proposed agreement covers the use of subcontractors, work rules for accelerating Bath Iron Works’ schedule A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

performance, 3% wage increases in each year and continuation of existing benefits. In a piece on the IAM’s website, the IAM S6 said the agreement keeps existing subcontracting language, healthcare premiums, and senior preferences. Dirk Lesko, the President of Bath Iron Works, said leadership worked “hand-in-hand” with the union negotiating committee on the agreement. In a statement, he said he hoped “our most valued employees” would “return to work soon so we can get on with our important mission of building ships for the U.S. Navy.” Phebe Novakovic, CEO of General Dynamics, said she was “pleased to have reached an agreement” with the union and credited assistance from Peter Navarro, a trade advisor to the White House, and AFL-CIO department president Jimmy Hart for “bringing the parties together.” IAM General Vice President Brian Bryant commended “the entire membership of Local S6” for their persistence. “Their strength and resilience allowed the negotiating committee to bring back this agreement.” IAM International President Robert Martinez Jr. and IAM Local S6 President said they were “proud” of the striking workers. A pair of dueling editorials published in June by the Portland Press Herald spelled out the terms of the disagreement. On June 17, the Herald published an editorial by Chris Wiers, president of the Local S6, in which he criticizes the company for attempting to “outsource jobs to out-of-state subcontractors, attack employee seniority provisions and dramatically increase employee healthcare costs.”
In response, Jon A. Fitzgerald, VP and general counsel of BIW, noted that the offer included wage increases to more than make up for the increased healthcare costs, and that changes to subcontract policies were to facilitate work unrelated to shipbuilding like shoveling snow. “It is our responsibility to ensure the competitiveness of one of the state’s largest employers,” he wrote, noting that BIW had recently lost a competition to build a new frigate. “This includes proposing changes to restrictions on our ability to muster and deploy every available resource.” On June 21, 87% of union members voted to approve a strike, which began the following day. “We appreciate the hard work of all who contributed to this effort, including both the BIW and LS6 negotiating committees as well as the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Services, who will continue to work with both parties to implement the agreement when it is ratified,” said Lesko.
Boeing Defense And Space Wins Deal To Build Four New Satellites From European Buyer Boeing’s Space, Defense and Security unit said it has won a deal to build four additional 702X satellites for SES, the European-based satellite network communications service provider. The Manufacturer’s Secret Weapon By Stephen Hannemann
Surviving the Times Manufacturing is tough enough in a booming market but now – surviving in our current ever-evolving environment takes a whole new level of creativity and grit. For businesses that have the good fortune of having their business or products deemed essential, the challenges are many. Purchase orders have been cancelled, and material supply chains have been interrupted or evaporated entirely. Workforces have diminished, and once robust manufacturing houses find themselves in financial crisis mode.
Flatline Fab, Sergio Torres & Robin Olsen, creating wall graphics Though with these current medical, economic, and civil unrest hurdles, our American manufacturing backbone exhibits astonishing resilience. That resilience stems from managers with positive attitudes and a dedicated and unified, nimble workforce. They know on a gut level all things are possible.

As a manufacturing rep and consultant, I am encouraged by the qualities and depths of human spirits. I have mentored, and have been mentored, not only by managers I have met over the years, but by their employees as well. Learning never stops when we are open minded. I have learned a valuable lesson: Inspiration affects equally as well from the bottom up as it does from the top down. The companies that are surviving even flourishing in these times are the ones where managers are partners with their work forces. For the past six months I have witnessed this choreographed ballet play out with many of the manufacturers I represent. The constants in all the successes during these times are attitudes of gratefulness and positivity. Challenges are viewed as opportunities for personal growth as well as an employer’s fiscal health when the attitudes are positive. Revamping manufacturing floors to keep employees safe and responding to sudden changes in business climates are no small matter.
