Editor’s Corner “Life is a preparation for the future; and the best preparation for the future is to live as if there were none.” Albert Einstein This is the way 3D printing is moving, so fast, evolving every day like there is no tomorrow. The 3D printing process combines powders and binders with complex geometric flexibility and structural rigidity. Different materials can be printed using different print heads. This allows printing of liquids or it can be applied as molten matter. From plastics to aerospace metals, and recently, printed human tissue all are made via additive manufacturing. For years, scientists have been able to “print” types of human tissue using a 3D printer, but in a significant leap forward by United States and Australian researchers they can now make that tissue survive on its own. Printing tiny sheets of tissue to entire 3D organs required developing the blood vessels that provide cells with nutrients and oxygen, and allowing them to excrete waste. This essential process is called “vascularisation” and is necessary if researchers are to ever prevent cells from dying so they can grow large, transplantable organs. In a major medical breakthrough, researchers from Sydney and Harvard Universities have managed to 3D bio-print capillaries, the tiny channels that allow vascularisation to take place so that cells can sustain themselves and survive using a high-tech “bio-printer”. We are entering an era where what we conceive really can be achieved. The basic model, or idea materializes through Computer Aided Design CAD, the CAD model and can be manipulated with various software that talks to, or codes the 3D printer and its print head. Basically any geometry, any material, any microstructure, and surface texture can be controlled to a print environment. What will the future bring? Flying cars, printer perfect organs, longer healthier lives, and a world where the possibilities are limitless. 4D printing has entered the manufacturing field where parts are printed using 3D techniques but engineered to transform in certain conditions on there own, with no human intervention. The material is designed and manipulated to act when subjected to an outside force. 4-D printing employs dynamic materials that continue to evolve in response to their environment, “programmable materials.” In closing I encourage you all to live like there is no tomorrow and embrace today’s fast paced manufacturing environment. There are a few shows that will be featuring some of the latest technology in 3D printing, Go witness them in action and be edified. Thank you for your continued support!

RMT was founded by longtime friends who are as close as family, Kyle Jorgenson and Steve Larsen. Kyle started in the machine tool industry working with his father, Roger Jorgenson, who founded Jorgenson Machine Tools in 1974. Roger taught Kyle how important relationships and customer service are, and Kyle has built his reputation on those principles. Steve has over twenty years of business management experience in both corporate America and as an entrepreneur. While Kyle is the visionary giving direction for the company, Steve helps make it happen. RMT is supported by an ever-expanding team of industry professionals, who have experience in include machine design, marketing, service, and support, and they also share the vision of the company. It is a very robust and talented group. Together, they are creating a revolution in the metal fabrication Machine Tool industry. While RMT continues to grow, their impressive product line demanded a larger space and the ability to display their machines for customers. This necessitated finding a building that not only offered a large showroom space, but also enough office space for 20 people and a warehouse with enough room to store their increasing inventory of both new and used equipment as well as a crane that can move it all. There were many buildings available, but only one that was just right.

Proper Requirements of Spring Design When approaching an engineering challenge such as the designing of a custom spring, you may ask yourself, “What parameters would be paramount in the manufacturing of this particular item?” In this article, we aim to educate the designer on the key factors that are required to precisely evaluate and engineer a custom spring that will meet and exceed all of the designer’s expectations. The first question a designer must take into consideration is the environment in which this custom spring will be required to perform within. Will this spring be required to perform in excessive heat or cold? Continued Page 10AGE 10

How To Sustain Strong Performance Achieving high levels of performance is hard enough, but sustaining those high levels over a prolonged period of time is incredible difficult, especially in a rapidly changing environment such as we operate in today. So a new study that explores how companies can achieve that sustained excellence should be of interest to managers everywhere. The companies chosen for the study were those who had been recognized by trade associations as having been high-performing businesses. Managers at each firm were then quizzed to understand both the performance of the firm, and the environment within which they operated. The researchers also analyzed financial performance and internal audits to better understand the quality of the products and services on offer. What makes for sustainable excellence? After controlling for as many possible external factors as possible, the researchers honed in on a number of factors and capabilities that underpinned sustainable excellence: • Innovation – which is defined as the ability to create new products and enter new markets • Improvement – unlike innovation, which is defined in more radical terms, improvement refers to more incremental improvements to products and services • Spotting weak signals – there are always things one can do that make an outsized impact, and always blind alleys that can see a lot of time and energy wasted. The best performers were exceptional at spotting the difference and understanding the wider business environment they operated in. • Adaptability – if the previous capability falls under the ‘sense’ part, then this could neatly be defined as the ‘respond’ aspect of Stephen Haeckel’s sense and respond approach. It relates to the ability of a company to solve unexpected problems and function in a complex environment. Suffice to say, each of these capabilities impacted different aspects of high performance. For instance, improvement was more important for maintaining high consistency, whereas innovation was more valuable in improving quality. Likewise, adaptability was more important for the quality levels, whereas sensing was more useful in maintaining consistency.
As with so much in life, the key isn’t to focus on one or two of the above, but to strike a balance across all four capabilities. The results suggest that if you can master them all, then your chances of sustaining excellence go up considerably. Source: Social Business

GE announced goals of having 20,000 women to fill STEM roles at GE by 2020 and obtaining 50:50 representation of all our technical entrylevel programs. The program will significantly increase the representation of women in its engineering, manufacturing, IT and product management roles – a strategy necessary to inject urgency into addressing ongoing gender imbalance in technical fields and fully transform into a digital industrial company. While efforts have been made across the sector, through education, funded initiatives and the emergence of non-profit discussion, progress has been slow on this issue. Technical and engineering sectors are still male dominated and the pipeline for future talent is currently insufficient to meet future needs. Without more women in technology and manufacturing, GE expects the skills gap to widen, impacting productivity and diminishing the potential of digital and other new technologies transforming industry and manufacturing.
Boeing’s 747 Jet Program Gets Reprieve, Lifted By Big UPS Order And The Amazon Effect When the first 747 was rolled out in 1969, it amazed people with its size. Last month, however, Boeing CO Dennis Muilenburg said Boeing’s Everett-based jumbo jet manufacturing program has stabilized and the Queen is out of intensive care. “On the 747 program, we are encouraged by the modest recovery in the air cargo market and the October order from UPS for 14 747-8 Freighters with options for an additional 14,” Muilenburg said on a conference call last month.

Wanted: Factory Workers, Degree Required When the German engineering company Siemens Energy opened a gas turbine production plant in Charlotte, N.C., some 10,000 people showed up at a job fair for 800 positions. But fewer than 15 percent of the applicants were able to pass a reading, writing and math screening test geared toward a ninth-grade education. “In our factories, there’s a computer about every 20 or 30 feet,” said Eric Spiegel, who recently retired as president and chief executive of Siemens U.S.A. “People on the plant floor need to be much more skilled than they were in the past. There are no jobs for high school graduates at Siemens today.” Ditto at John Deere dealerships, which repair million-dollar farming machinery filled with several dozen computers. Fixing tractors and grain harvesters now requires advanced math and comprehension skills and the ability to solve problems on the fly. “The toolbox is now a computer,” said Andy Winnett, who directs the company’s agricultural program at Walla Walla Community College in Washington. These are the types of good-paying jobs that President Trump, blaming trade deals for the decline in manufacturing, has promised to bring back to working-class communities. But according to a study by Ball State University, nearly nine in 10 jobs that disappeared since 2000 were lost to automation in the decades-long march to an information-driven economy, not to workers in other countries. Even if those jobs returned, a high school diploma is simply no longer good enough to fill them.Yet rarely discussed in the political debate over lost jobs are the academic skills needed for today’s factory-floor positions, and the pathways through education that lead to them. Many believe that the solution is for more Americans to go to college. But the college-for-all movement, which got its start in the 1970s as American manufacturing began its decline, is often conflated with earning a bachelor’s degree. Many high school students rush off to four-year campuses not ready for the academic work or not sure why they are there. Government data show that 44 percent of new graduates enroll directly in a four-year college, but based on recent trends, less than half of them will earn a degree within four years. And though two-year colleges have long been identified as the institutions that fill the job-training role, some 80 percent of community college students say they intend to go on for a bachelor’s degree, or they leave with generic associate degrees that are of little value in the job market. Students in the United States are offered few feasible routes to middleskill careers — jobs that require more education than a high school diploma but typically not a bachelor’s degree. The National Skills Coalition, a nonprofit organization, calculates that middle-skill jobs — in computer technology, health care, construction, high-skill manufacturing and other fields — account for 54 percent of the labor market, but only 44 percent of workers are sufficiently trained. Faced with a skills gap, employers are increasingly working with
community colleges to provide students with both the academic education needed to succeed in today’s work force and the specific hands-on skills to get a job in their companies. John Deere, for example, has designed a curriculum and donated farm equipment to several community colleges to train technicians for its dealer network. About 15 to 20 students come through the program at Walla Walla each semester. Because they are sponsored by a John Deere dealership, where the students work for half the program, most graduate in two years with a job in hand. Technicians start at salaries just shy of $40,000, on average. Dr. Carnevale’s research has found that 40 percent of middle-skills jobs pay more than $55,000 a year; some 14 percent pay more than $80,000 (by comparison, the median salary for young adults with a bachelor’s degree is $50,000). Jobs like the ones John Deere offers are still associated in people’s minds with students who performed poorly in high school, those considered “not college material.” But to succeed in programs like those at Walla Walla, students need to take advanced math and writing in high school, academics typically encouraged only for those going on to four-year colleges. Persuading students and their parents to consider the apprenticeship track is a tough sell, especially because companies want students who have a strong academic background. Struggling to fill jobs in the Charlotte plant, Siemens in 2011 created an
apprenticeship program for seniors at local high schools that combines four years of on-the-job training with an associate degree in mechatronics from nearby Central Piedmont Community College. When they finish, graduates have no student loans and earn more than $50,000 a year. “These are not positions for underachievers,” said Roger Collins, who recruits apprentices for Siemens at 15 Charlotte-area high schools. The Department of Labor’s registry now lists 21,000 programs with about 500,000 apprentices, which sounds impressive but represents only 1.5 percent of 18- to 24-year-olds in this country and is far short of demand. Still, participation is up 35 percent and the number of programs by 11 percent since 2013. Apprenticeships are making a comeback thanks in part to bipartisan support among lawmakers. In the last two years, Washington has allocated $265 million to spur programs. President Obama’s secretary of labor, Thomas E. Perez, a strong proponent, attempted to rebrand apprenticeships to appeal to educators and parents. During his tenure, the department established a partnership between registered community colleges and sponsors that allowed on-the-job-training to count as academic credit toward a degree. “Apprenticeship is the other college, except without the debt,” said Mr. Perez, who had a goal of doubling the number by 2018. Advocates are hopeful that the trend will continue with new leadership in Washington, given President Trump’s familiarity with construction. Source:The New York Times A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST

SpaceX Adds Another Iridium Launch Order Just weeks after returning to flight this month, SpaceX has won a contract f ro m s at e l l i t e o p e r at o r I r i d i u m Communications Inc. to launch five satellites. The satellites are scheduled to launch in early 2018 from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, according to an announcement from Iridium. Space X’s Falcon 9 rocket booster weighs 50,000 pounds and stands 162-foot-tall. The order is SpaceX’s eighth Falcon 9 launch with Iridium. The Hawthornebased company delivered 10 satellites into orbit for Iridium on Jan. 14, four months after a launch pad explosion in Florida prompted a suspension of launches during a company investigation into the cause of the explosion. Iridium said that in the upcoming launch its satellites will ride alongside twin satellites jointly operated by NASA and the GFZ German Research Center for Geosciences, marking the first rideshare deal for Iridium. McLean, Virginia-based Iridium said sharing the rocket with the scientific satellites was “economical for all parties” and “represents a material savings from other supplemental launch options.” The company said it also allows it to complete its entire operational constellation at a faster rate. “This is a very smart way to get additional Iridium Next satellites into orbit,” said Iridium Chief Executive Matt Desch in a statement. “This launch provides added resiliency to our network for not much more than we had planned originally to launch 72 satellites, including two with Kosmotras.” Iridium Next is the company’s nextgeneration global satellite constellation, replacing its existing network of lowEarth orbit satellites.
Iridium has contracted with SpaceX for seven dedicated Iridium Next launches, deploying 70 Iridium Next satellites into low-Earth orbit, across a 13-month period out of Vandenberg AFB. This eighth launch will increase the constellation’s count to 75 total in-orbit satellites, nine of which will serve as on-orbit spares. The first set of Iridium Next satellites, launched on Jan.14, is currently under test in orbit. SpaceX now is targeting mid-February for its next launch, according to the Los Angeles Times. The company will carry supplies for NASA to the International Space Station and plans to launch for the first time from the historic Pad 39A at Kennedy Space Center, which was previously used for the Apollo and space shuttle programs. Oregon Manufacturers Fighting Expanded Overtime Interpretation A new interpretation of Oregon’s overtime laws by state labor regulators has sent manufacturers to Salem seeking relief from the Legislature. The manufacturers say new guidance from the Bureau of Labor and Industries in December — advising employers to pay both weekly and daily overtime to workers, rather than the greater of two — is putting a hurt on businesses. Oregon has two separate overtime laws for manufacturers, one that requires OT for working more than 10 hours in a day, and another that requires OT for working more than 40 hours in a week. “This has a huge impact on the majority of our members,” said Ian Tolleson, director of government affairs for the Northwest Food Processors Association. “Our companies in Oregon have been getting hammered with laws that have been outright hostile, and this is just one more on the top of all the others.” The BOLI interpretation arises from a class-action lawsuit brought by workers at industrial baker Portland Specialty Baking in Gresham. The workers, represented by the Northwest Workers’ Justice Project, brought several complaints, among them that the company failed to pay overtime wages under both Oregon laws that apply to manufacturers — one for hours worked over 10 in a day, and another for hours worked over 40 in a week. BOLI had long published “technical assistance” saying, “When employees who are entitled to and have worked daily overtime have also worked more than 40 hours in the workweek, the employer should calculate overtime wages for hours worked on both a daily basis and a weekly basis and then pay the greater amount of the two.” However, according to BOLI Communications Director Charlie Burr, the agency’s Wage and Hour Division hadn’t examined the issue until it came up in the Portland Speciality Baking suit. “The lawsuit brought to our attention that there might be some confusion, and prompted our Wage and Hour Division to take a look at it,” Burr said. “Because of that, we’ve clarified our technical assistance and reached out to business groups to inform them of that.” BOLI’s technical assistance includes the caveat that it isn’t intended as legal advice, and Burr said the agency gives “employers the most conservative advice” in order to help them stay out of trouble. Record Profit At GE Aviation Shows Promise For Boeing’s New Service Thrust General Electric Co.’s GE Aviation posted solid revenue growth and a record profit in its latest quarter, helped by a shift to services. GE Aviation reported revenue of $7.2 billion in 2016’s fourth quarter, a seven percent increase compared to the $6.7 billion it reported for the same period in 2015. Commercial jet engines stand before being shipped to customers from the GE Aviation test operations facility in Peebles, Ohio. Sales of spares and a big increase in new customer services agreements helped GE Aviation generate record profits in the fourth quarter of 2016. The unit’s profit was a record $1.74 billion, up 11 percent compared to the $1.57 billion profit made by the aviation unit a year earlier, helped by a significant shift to services, according to Sam Pearlstein, a Wells Fargo aerospace analyst. Pearlstein noted GE Aviation’s total aftermarket sales rose a whopping 12 percent to $3.9 billion. Fourth quarter average daily commercial spares sales were up 18 percent to a record as well, he said. The numbers are noteworthy because they highlight just how much of GE Aviation’s profits are now coming from the aviation services and spare parts aftermarket segments, the same market segment that Chicago-based Boeing (NYSE: BA) is trying to crack. Boeing created its global services unit last fall and hired new CEO Kevin McAllister (and former CEO of GE Aviation Services) to run its Boeing Commercial Airplanes unit. Pearlstein expects GE Aviation’s growth

GE Aviation’s total backlog now stands at $154.5 billion at the end of 2016, representing 48 percent of GE’s total backlog, Pearlstein said. Aerospace analysts like Pearlstein watch GE Aviation and its financial results and trends very closely given its sizable presence in: aviation original equipment (commercial/military engines), aviation aftermarket (spares and service agreements) and its major aircraft leasing unit (GE Capital Aviation Services). Tormach: Enabling Your Ideas With Personal CNC Machines
in the late 1970s, and began to put together a list of design criteria for a PCNC. These included:
At Tormach, our mission is to empower people who make things. We are dedicated to providing exceptionally engineered small CNC machines, tooling, and related products with best-in-industry technical support and customer service. Our focus is to help our customers turn their concepts in to reality by providing the tools and information that help them be successful with CNC. Our flagship products are our PCNC, or Personal CNC, series of machine tools. PCNC mills have become the CNC machine of choice for inventors, small/boutique manufacturers, garage entrepreneurs, product developers, hobbyists, educators, and people who make things around the world.
Capability to meet/exceed typical machined part tolerances: a PCNC Mill should not sacrifice the end result part quality. Machine frame rigidity and position resolution are critical; if needed, compromises can be made in spindle power, and maximum motion speed –attributes that affect throughput, but not product quality Affordable to justify occasional, as needed use: a PCNC mill must not need to be constantly producing to pay its own carrying costs. It is not designed as a replacement for a production capability, but rather as a CNC tool to assist with R&D, Design, and Product Development Open-source, user serviceable architecture: PCNC mills should be based on simple and robust machine architecture for minimal maintenance and repairs. PCNC mills should not require specially trained service personnel, and repair components must be obtainable and affordable. Expandable, modular design: a PCNC Mill should minimize upfront investment with options that could be added on an as-needed basis – 4th axis,AutomaticTool Changer, Coolant Kit, etc. Components such as tooling, etc. should be sold on an a la carte basis to allow customers to pick and choose exactly what they need. Minimized delivery charges – hidden delivery/installation fees can be over 25% of the sales price of a conventional CNC machine. A Personal CNC is designed to minimized acquisition fees – even to residential addresses. Tormach Personal CNC Design Story
The Personal CNC Story Our company has grown quite a bit from modest beginnings. Like many of the businesses that use our PCNC machines, Tormach was started in garage – not too far from our current shop near Madison, WI. Back in 2001, two friends had a series of casual conversations, basically maligning how there were no good small CNC machines available for inventors, R&D professionals, or small manufacturers. Both had expertise in manufacturing automation: one of the two owned a specialty tool company, and the other was general manager of a technology research company. Both agreed they could really make use of an affordable small CNC machine – whether for prototyping products or for specialty manufacturing – if only such a machine existed. They came up with the concept of Personal CNC – paying homage to some of the same ideas that spawned the personal computer revolution A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST • 22 •Feb / Mar 2017
Not long after, the 2001-2002 recession hit hard on technology companies. When investment pulled out, the research company shut its doors. About
that time, the tool company owner called up the former research manager and reminded him about those first conversations concerning thePersonalCNC Machine and that the time might be right to do something more than just talk about it. That was the start ofTormach LLC. Fast forward 10 years and several thousand CNC machines sold. Tormach has seen much success – with a staff of experienced engineering and manufacturing professionals, dedicated to creating unsurpassed value in CNC machines – and grown significantly because of it. Now, the company is 100% employee-owned and known as Tormach Inc. through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan, or ESOP. Employee ownership keeps Tormach on its already successful trajectory while allowing the employees to take greater leadership in the organization. Mission Driven Tormach was started because we felt there was a real need among entrepreneurs, researchers, educators, and hobbyists for affordable small CNC machines, what we called personal CNC machines or PCNC machines. If we seem to know what you want, it is probably because we have been in your shoes. We’re a company of engineers, machinists, and “tool guys”, just like our customers. At Tormach, we also feel that the best method for sustaining and developing the manufacturing base of a nation is through a wide spread understanding of manufacturing processes. Trade barriers and factory subsidies pale in comparison to the potential of thousands of entrepreneurs with ideas, ambition, and smaller scale machinery to bring their ideas to life. Tormach applauds the innovators among us and is dedicated to providing the affordable small CNC machines (PCNC) and other tools they need to support their ambitions. Combining Quality andValue Prior to the release of our PCNC Series of CNC milling machines, there were no suitable options for affordable small CNC machinery. Companies associated with low cost CNC machine tools, such as Grizzly, Enco, or Smithy, are essentially resellers of machinery made in China. They may select the color and a few options, but they do not have an engineering staff that truly controls the design of their CNC machines and tooling. The cost is low and quality is variable. In contrast, CNC machine tools, such as those from Hardinge, Mori Seiki, and others, are highly engineered products, designed and manufactured by companies in USA, Germany, or Japan. This provides high quality but at a tremendous cost. In creating the PCNC mill, we pioneered a new way, working closely with
asian factory partners to provide the best value in CNC machines to our customers at an affordable entry point. Our experienced USA-based engineering team guides every detail of product design and development, while our independent China-based QA team inspects all products prior to shipment. This combination of western technology and Asian manufacturing provides quality and value that is unmatched anywhere. Full Spectrum Tormach is dedicated to helping people enter the world of CNC manufacturing, by providing affordable small CNC machines (personal CNC machines) and related products. But that is only a part of what is needed to accomplish that. Through our website, engineering documents, manuals, training, software, tooling, and engineered accessories, we are working to make CNC machining easy to learn and productivity quick to achieve. There is a learning curve, but it is not a brick wall, and Tormach makes the process easier! A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST

Powin Energy Says Big Southern California Battery Project Is Online Powin said last month that the 2-megawatt/8-megawatt-hour Millikan Avenue Battery Energy Storage System in Irvine was online, serving Southern California Edison with peaking capacity and grid-support services. Powin Energy battery energy storage systems come with a patented batterypack operating system that the company says improves efficiency and longevity. Powin won a contract to build and operate the facility last summer as regulators and utilities in the region scrambled to avoid peak energy shortages after leaks forced the shutdown of the Aliso Canyon natural-gas storage facility. The contract came with pressure: Not only was it Powin’s first big commercial project, but the company had less than six months to get the system in place. It turned out to be just the opportunity the company was looking for. The “bp-OS” is Powin’s patented battery-pack operating system, which optimizes battery functions down to the cell level. Cells are aggregated into modules, packs and strings to comprise the battery energy storage system. Powin said the Irvine facility “consists of 2,400 Li-ion battery packs, each A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

containing 3.7 kWh of lithium iron phosphate prismatic modules.” The system is housed in a 35,000-square-foot warehouse. Powin is providing energy and grid services to Southern California Edison under a 10-year contract. Terms of the deal are confidential, but Powin told the Business Journal last fall that it could earn between $4 million and $6 million over the period. Four Bay Area cities, SFMade Join ForcesTo Save Manufacturing Between beer brewers, car makers, sewn goods and metal workers, the manufacturing sector in the Bay Area is flourishing. In 2015, the region outpaced both the nation and California in manufacturing growth and today supports more than 8,000 manufacturing companies with 300,000 jobs, according to a report from by SFMade. But with rising rent, stiff competition for space and often unfavorable business conditions, the Bay Area is at risk for having its manufacturers flee. In light of this, the region’s four largest cities – San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose and Fremont – have joined forces to launch the Bay Area Urban Manufacturing Initiative (BAUM), a three-year project to
develop a well-defined and interconnected regional ecosystem to support, grow, develop and protect the area’s manufacturing sector. “Our four largest cities are saying, ‘Let’s seize this moment, break down barriers and work together to create a stronger, more resilient, inclusive, interconnected local economy,’” said Kate Sofis, CEO of SFMade, at today’s Summit for Urban Manufacturing.

SFMade is leading the initiative, which came together after the organization compiled a report based on research and surveys on manufacturers. The report found that together these four cities have more than 3,200 manufacturing companies that create over 108,500 jobs and account for over 20 percent of California’s manufacturing sector, which is the largest in the nation. The region also contributes over $55 billion to the California economy each year.

Robotics Startup Raises $13.3M To Make ‘Auto-Correct For Your Hands’
ISO/AS9100 CERTIFIED
Robotics startup Shaper raised $13.3 million in new funding to help hobbyists make cool crafts, according to a new filling from the SEC. Prior to this, the company had raised a $3 million seed round in August from backers such as Root Ventures, SOSV and Eniac Ventures. CEO Joe Hebenstreit heads up the San Francisco-based company, which was founded in 2012 to build the Origin, a handheld computer numeric control machine. Origin helps users produce professional quality products by precisely cutting through a variety of materials, including wood, carbon fiber and vinyl. “Origin uses computer vision to understand its location relative to a workpiece,” the company said on its website. “Its precision motors fine-tune the router spindle’s position in real time using sophisticated sensing and control algorithms that keep you accurate to within 1/100th of an inch of your intended path. If you stray outside of Origin’s correction range, the blade automatically retracts, protecting your workpiece. Think of Origin as auto-correct for your hands.” The device is available at $1,499 for a limited time, but eventually the Origin will retail for $2,099. Source: Silicon Valley Business Journal

i3D MFG Specializes in Metal 3D Printing Serving The Aerospace & Defense Industries Additive Manufacturing OEM EOS Is Their Partner i3D MFG™ is a relatively young company that is doing extraordinary things. In just its 4th year of business, the ITAR registered company supports some of the largest aerospace customers with cost-effective, small batch, complex and high-value metal parts – parts that are manufactured with 3D (additive) technology. The company is in the process of certifying to AS9100 Rev. D, with plans to achieve this in Q3.
i3D MFG is so proficient in DMLS that 3D manufacturer EOS designated the company a ‘North America Material Process Partner’. This gives them access to the latest DMLS machine parameter sets, and it enables the company to develop custom powders or ‘recipes’ for their customers. Their expertise has been called on by the US Air Force to publish a chapter in their manual for Additive Manufacturing.
“We take 3D models and lay extremely thin layers of the powdered metals, then weld the micron layers together. It comes out denser than a cast part.” Erin Stone, CEO Today the company is co-owned by a team of 4, 3 who run the day-to-day business, and the 4th is an investment partner. The 3 active owners include founders Erin Stone and Matt Garrett, and Chad Cooper, who joined the company shortly after it opened for business. All 3 owners bring decades of manufacturing and technical sales expertise to their company. Collectively, they have over 50 years of management level experience. Erin describes i3D’s decision to launch a DMLS start-up, “3D metal printing has emerged as a critical component in aerospace, rocket, and UAV design and manufacturing, but until i3D began in 2014, companies in the Western US were forced to use DMLS services thousands of miles away, reducing some of the lead time and cost advantages 3D printing is known for.” Chad explains, “What differentiates i3D MFG from other 3D manufacturing entities who specialize in prototypes only is the technology we use. It is called ‘Direct Metal Laser Sintering’ (DMLS), also referred to as Direct Metal Laser Melting (DMLM), and it moves 3D printing from the prototyping realm into true production parts manufacturing. DMLS parts are typically characterized as having strength, hardness and durability that is, at the least, comparable to cast or forged parts in comparable metal.” Chad adds, “Today, DMLS parts are used in final assemblies by NASA, the Army, the Air Force, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, GE, L3 and BAE, and these are some of our customers. DMLS is perfectly suited for aerospace and UAV thermal, weight reduction and complex part requirements. Generally, 3D metal printing holds tolerances off the printer as tight as +/- .002, and prints densities above 99%, making tighter tolerances and post process A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •
requirements easily achievable. At i3D, we also manufacture parts for medical and dental device applications, firearms accessory manufacturers, the energy and recreational gear industr ies, and automotive parts users.”
26 • FEB / MAR 2017
Regarding the process itself, Matt explains “As opposed to traditional, or subtractive manufacturing where parts are carved out of billet, the additive manufacturing process starts with 20-40 micron layers of powdered metal and uses a laser to melt thousands of micro layers together, one layer at a time based on a 3D CAD model – adding material only where the model dictates. DMLS enables production parts to be built that cannot be traditionally manufactured, including weight reductions through lattice and honeycomb structures, conformal cooling channels, and single part builds of multi-part assemblies.” i3D prints stock metals including Titanium, Aluminum, Inconel, Monel K500, Haynes 282, 4 medical grade Stainless Steels, and Maraging Tool Steel as well as custom powders created for specific customer applications. Matt says that since there is no material waste and the ability to reduce assembly components, DMLS printing can reduce the cost of parts made from exotic metals like Titanium and Inconel by 50- 70%. Parts and small batch test runs can be 3D printed impressively fast and post-processed to meet finish requirements in days. Multiple design iterations are possible within the same build allowing a shorter design time-line. This type of nimble market reaction time gives i3D clients a competitive advantage in market testing, product improvement reaction time, and JIT delivery. i3D MFG opened for business with 1 EOS M280 (DMLS) machine. Just 4 short years later, the company now owns 5 EOS DMLS machines. How did a start up grow to 5 DMLS machines, one could ask, as these machines are
quite costly. Optimism and hard work meet preparedness, that’s how. Early on, the company was awarded funds through a program called the ‘New Market Tax Credit Program’ (NMTC). The NMTC Program is a US Department of Treasury program that incentivizes community development and economic growth through the use of tax credits that attract private investment to distressed communities. i3D MFG opened for business in The Dalles, Oregon, about an hour from Portland, because the city qualified for the NMTC program. i3D MFG didn’t expand their business with new DMLS machines just to increase capacity. Rather, they did it to increase turnaround time for their customers and to increase their portfolio of offerings. Matt says, “We now offer 3D printing of 15 different stock metal powders, and for our most heavily utilized metal powders, we have dedicated DMLS machines. (Powder handling is critical, Matt says, as cross contamination is unacceptable, and to prevent this, it can take hours to remove the previously used powder prior to printing with a new metal powder). Through the use of 5 DMLS machines, i3D eliminates the need to constantly clean the machines of the previously used metal powder, creating nimble response time and creating cost efficiencies. i3D offers ‘Design-for-3D-Expertise’ to its customers. “The company’s proposals for manufacturing are not optimally done over Internet quoting”, Erin describes, expanding, “At i3D, we closely assist our clients’ designers and engineers in Design-for-3D manufacturing. Design-for-3D manufacturing creates limitless new opportunities for game-changing new parts and efficiencies.” i3D MFG is equipped with in-house finishing equipment specifically chosen to efficiently remove support material and deliver a professional quality part. The finishing shop includes heat treat, wire EDM, drilling, tapping, tumbling, ultrasonic cleaning and blasting equipment. Their expanding quality department is stocked with necessary measurement tools and a 3D scanner used to assure customers they are receiving a conforming product.Matt clarifies, “3D doesn’t per se compete with traditional or subtractive manufacturing — rather it is complimentary and often the two manufacturing methodologies are best suited for specific applications.” That being said, i3D MFG has partnered with a machine shop in Montana, Thompson
Precision, for reciprocal machining arrangements. Chad adds, “We encourage other machine shops to contact us for synergistic business opportunities.” The i3D team isn’t just passionate about 3D additive manufacturing — they are also passionate about their home state of Oregon. In fact, each of the DMLS machines are named after rivers in Oregon, and the partners say in jest that when they have named their machines for all of the rivers in Oregon, they will be moving on to names of mountains and lakes next! (There are somewhere between 37 and 59 – some numbers count creeks, and some use ‘forks’ on given rivers to double or triple count). “The partners have been a part of companies that moved manufacturing from the United States to China, or to other low-labor cost countries. We started i3D MFG because we want to participate in the reshoring initiative that is taking place today”, Erin says, adding,” We are proud to bring new jobs into the industry through i3D MFG, and these aren’t minimum wage jobs — the team we continue to grow is experienced in engineering and design, and they earn a true family wage and benefits.” There are so many reasons to contact i3D MFG. If you have complex parts that can benefit from 3D manufacturing, contact them at 541.588.0986 or visit their website at i3DMFG.com. You will find a wealth of information on 3D DMLS printing in their online library. complex parts. EOS, the global technology and quality leader for highend 3D printing (AM) solutions, has almost 30 years of experience in this field, and uses their unique combination of systems services and processes to enable their partners to manufacture parts, tools and components with more efficiency and design freedom than ever before. In the aerospace industry specifically, EOS is teaming up with innovative companies like i3D MFG to manufacture critical components for the aerospace industry that would previously have been impossible using traditional manufacturing methods. Through Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS), EOS’ metal, or ‘M’ series, machines use lasers to create parts additively, melting metal powder together to form intricate designs created through CAD data and programs. This technology has been instrumental in shifting industrial 3D printing from prototypingonly to production of actual parts in the aerospace industry given the strength, hardness, and durability of parts equal to that in subtractive manufacturing, while part design creativity is significantly improved. “DMLS functions as a no-waste process, enabling parts to be built that cannot be traditionally manufactured, including complex geometries, conformal channels, and single part builds of multi-part assemblies,” says Matt Garrett, one of i3D MFG founding members. “DMLS is perfectly suited for aerospace and UAV thermal, weight reduction and complex part requirements and the possibilities for this technology are endless.” i3D MFG currently uses EOS’ metal machines to decrease turnaround time and cost in part production for their customers around the globe – EOS’ global footprint and expertise are another reason they serve as a strong partner. In addition, EOS’ extensive library of metal materials available for use ensure i3D MFG can accommodate a range of manufacturing requests on behalf of their diverse customer base. “EOS’ DMLS machines have empowered our partners in the aerospace industry with unprecedented flexibility in design and engineering that enables them to produces the same part with weight reduction of about 40-60 percent,” said Scott Killian, emerging technology business manager at EOS North America. “Using this technology, partners like i3D MFG can help their customers produce products that consume significantly less fuel and emit less carbon dioxide due to manufacturing efficiencies. These enhancements translate directly into cost-savings.” And lightweighting is just one of the uses for DMLS. This technique allows a toolless production which requires less energy and raw material than conventional manufacturing. Traditional techniques that use wax molds have restrictions that limit production to 20 units per day. The DMLS process does not require tools or molds, enabling independence from batch sizes, which is also an important element in the aerospace field. “Since our technology uses CAD data and digital designs, our customers have the freedom to produce anywhere from one to thousands of parts in one day,” adds Killian. “Innovative companies like i3D MFG that are growing at a rapid pace and challenging the status quo can shorten the time they spend in R&D and bring their innovations to market quicker than ever.” Since launching as a startup in 2013, i3D MFG now houses five EOS DMLS machines and works with several top government and private aerospace companies. EOS collaborated closely with i3D MFG to ensure the right mix of machines and materials were in place, giving i3D MFG’s customers a distinct competitive edge. Aerospace companies like i3D MFG see the potential in futurefacing manufacturing technology that upend limitations inherent in conventional manufacturing, and are bringing these solutions to bear for their customers at a breakneck pace. The company will also continue its operations in Connecticut and in the United Kingdom. David Burns, who became Superwinch’s CEO in 2014, lives in Oregon, which has in part prompted the move of the company’s headquarters. The transition is expected to be complete when the company fully occupies the new space in May. “Adding a new facility on the West Coast will provide faster service and delivery, allowing Superwinch to be even more competitive,” Burns said in a release issued by commercial real estate firm CBRE. Cara Nolan, vice president of CBRE Portland’s office, represented Superwinch in the transaction.
Subaru of America Inc. has opened a massive master parts distribution center in Gresham.
“The Portland Metro industrial market is facing historically low vacancy rates,” she said, in the release. “Finding a facility that offered the right size and efficient layout in a tight market was a challenge. Despite the small number of options in the preferred Southwest Portland submarket for Superwinch, we were able to secure a lease with PacTrust on a building that was under construction.”
The 600,000-square-foot facility will serve as a key West Coast hub for Subaru’s existing regional center network. The company plans to hire 50 full-time workers at the site, into which $60 million was poured.
Scott Salmon, Superwinch’s vice president of consumer business and himself a graduate of Lake Oswego High School and Marylhurst University, said the company would be sharing more details about the new headquarters once it’s up and running.
“Gresham’s location logistically matches our ideal vision for our master redistribution center in the U.S. and we look forward to seeing firsthand the positive impact the center will have on the local community,” saidThomas Doll, Subaru of America’s president and COO, in a release. 10 ptThe facility sits at the Port of Portland’s Gresham Vista Business Park. It will work with nine Subaru regional distribution centers.

It sounds incongruous, but the testing at the NationalWindTechnology Center in Boulder reflects the design and scale of the generator developed by Corvallis-based Columbia Power Technologies for the company’s StingRAY wave energy converter. “We are testing the StingRAY at the NWTC because the core design is similar to a wind turbine — it is direct drive, but with a very large diameter,” Columbia Power Technologies CEO Reenst Lesemann said in a release from the National Renewable Energy Center, which runs the wind test center. “The dynamometer can mimic the sea, with backand-forth oscillation, and will put the generator through its paces to ensure it can withstand ocean forces.” Columbia PowerTechnologies is aiming to have the StingRAY ready for ocean testing in Hawaii next year. It’s a big device — it will house two of the 6.5-meter-diameter generators — with a big price tag, costing “significantly more than $5 million” to build and deploy, Lesemann told the Business Journal. While Colorado is the site for testing the generator, and Hawaii is its destination for getting wet, the project has deep roots in Oregon. Columbia PowerTechnologies employs 10 people at its Corvallis office, and a host of companies in the region — Ram-Z Fab in Corvallis, Greenberry Industrial in Astoria and Vancouver, Concept Systems in Albany, Durham & Bates in Portland and Ershigs in Ridgefield, Wash. among them — had a hand in the developing the generator. Lesemann said the project demonstrates the type of economic impact that wave energy can have in Oregon, which he said should grow if a federally backed Pacific Marine Energy Center test site off Newport begins operations in 2020 as planned. “This is more than just renewable energy here,” he said. “There are a lot more drivers behind why this test center makes sense for Oregon. There’s already been significant investment in Oregon, and with PMEC you’ll see it on a larger scale.” Source: Portland Business Journal
Sharp May Break Ground On US Plant This Year Reuters reports Sharp Corp may break ground on a new $7 billion US plant in the first half of this year, according to “a person with knowledge of the plan.” Parent-company Foxconn reportedly decided “to give Sharp the lead” on the project ahead of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s scheduled diplomatic visit to the US – in which he plans to unveil a “package Tokyo hopes will please Trump,” including unveiling “investments to create as many as 700,000 U.S. jobs.”
Sharp hopes to have the LCD display panel plant operational by the end of 2020. The plan calls for either Sharp or Foxconn to “invest in a panel maker that will operate the plant,” according to an unnamed Sharp executive. The Nikkei says that the move “is widely seen as a response to pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump on manufacturers to invest in the U.S. and create jobs there.”

The CST-100 Starliner space crew capsules will be made with more than 600 3D-printed parts, Reuters reports. Boeing plans to use more than 600 3D-printed parts on its CST-100 Starliner space taxis, according to a report from Reuters. Oxford Performance Materials created the parts with strategic investment support from Hexcel totaling $25 million. Boeing currently has a $4.2 billion contract with NASA to build three Starliner taxis and Oxford’s fire-and-radiation-resistant PEKK plastic is supposed to help reduce building costs, Reuters said.

The Starliner is a crew capsule designed for NASA’s Commercial Crew Development program, an effort to broaden space travel beyond the confines of government-led missions. The private sector has been front and center in recent months in rocket launches and test flights by the likes of Elon Musk’s SpaceX, Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin and Richard Branson’s space tourism-minded Virgin Galactic. SpaceX is also building a capsule for NASA under a $2.6 billion contract. A Boeing representative told me the company has relied on 3D printing since 2003 and is currently using 50,000 parts made through additive manufacturing. She added that Oxford’s 3D-printed parts will be used on the “air revitalization system, interior closeouts and support structures” on Boeing’s three Starliner space taxis, which are scheduled to start test flights in 2018.
US Employers Add 227,000 Jobs In January President Trump hailed the Labor Department’s announcement that US employers added 227,000 jobs in January, though average hourly earnings increased by just 0.1 percent year on year and the unemployment rate rose slightly to 4.8 percent. While the network newscasts only devoted just over two minutes to the latest data, coverage was heavy in print and online. Reporting was generally positive toward the employment data and highlighted that while the report was the last of former President Obama’s term, Trump also deserves some credit for the gains. ABC World News Tonight broadcast in a brief report that “both President Trump and former President Obama [are] taking credit” for the figures, though theWashington Post saysWhite House press secretary Sean Spicer “went further” than his boss “in his afternoon briefing,” stating that the “report reflects the consumer confidence that the Trump presidency has inspired.” A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

Portland Among Possible Locations For Japanese Tool-Maker’s U.S. Headquarters The sales and service arm of a Japanese company that makes machines for jet engine manufacturers is considering Portland as a new home for its U.S. headquarters. According to the Albany Business Review, Mitsui Seiki, a subsidiary of Mitsui Seiki Kogyo Co. Ltd. inTokyo, is on the hunt for a new headquarters. The New Jersey based company is considering Albany, New York, the Carolinas, Indianapolis and Portland for a possible relocation. Mitsui Seiki, a company that makes and services tools used to make jet engines and aircraft parts, is searching for a new home for its U.S. operations. Portland is on the short list. Mitsui Seiki President Scott Walker told the Business Review that he is searching for “communities with a strong workforce and lower housing costs than he currently has near the company’s U.S. headquarters in Franklin Lakes in northern New Jersey.” The cost of living near the company’s current location, he said, is so high that it’s hard to find and retain talented workers. The company is also looking for a location with easy airport access. Mitsui Seiki currently employs about 40 people in New Jersey. The search for a new home should be narrowed down to two by this summer. Source: Portland Business Journal
Caterpillar Looks To Startup For Drone Technology The venture arm of Caterpillar Inc., a major manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, has invested in San Francisco drone tech startup Airware. Rather than make its own unmanned aerial vehicles, Airware has focused its efforts around providing software and services that help large enterprises use drones throughout their operations. Airware’s cloud-based software helps companies plan flights, automate those as much as possible, then analyze all the data their drones collect. In putting drones to work, large construction, mining and insurance companies generally seek to cut costs, improve worker safety or increase their revenue and productivity.

Lockheed Martin, Pentagon Reach Deal For ‘Lowest-Priced’ F-35s
Lockheed Martin Corp. has struck a deal valued at more than $8 billion with the Department of Defense that reduces the total cost of the next lot of F-35 aircraft by $728 million. The deal for the first time brings the cost of the F-35A, the Air Force variant, below $100 million — a goal the Bethesda defense contractor has been working toward for quite some time, before the program’s costs came under attack from President Donald Trump for being “out of control.” Lockheed Martin has reached an agreement with the Pentagon to provide its latest lot of F-35 Joint Strike Fighters, at its lowest price yet.

The entire contract, pegged in media reports between $8.2 billion and $8.9 billion, is for 90 aircraft in the 10th lot.The company billed these as the “lowest-priced F-35s in program history.” Lockheed pointed to lower unit prices, including the jet, engine and fee for the three F-35 variants, for the price drop. The F-35A unit price dropped 7.3 percent compared with the previous contract lot to $94.6 million. Across the last two lots, that amounts to a 12 percent cost reduction, the company said. The F-35B, for the Marine Corps, dropped 6.7 percent from the prior lot to $122.8 million. The third, the F-35C for the Navy, saw a 7.9 percent price cut to $121.8 million. “The LRIP-10 contract is a good and fair deal for the taxpayers, the U.S. Government, allies, and Industry,” said Lt. Gen. Chris Bogdan, F-35 program executive officer, in a statement. “We continue to work with industry to drive costs out of the program.” Lockheed CEO Marillyn Hewson has met at least three times with Trump after he tweeted concerns in December about the F-35 program’s costs. But costs have been a focus for the company well before that— it’s been working for some time on its long-term plan
to drive costs down to $85 million per jet. In all, since the delivery of the first F-35, costs per jet have dropped 57 percent. Additionally, Lockheed has two long-running cost-cutting initiatives — Blueprint for Affordability, aimed at reducing the price per plane, and the Sustainment Cost Reduction Initiative, aimed at bringing down sustainment costs of the jet. Together, the two programs have resulted in an estimated $5 billion in cost savings in recent years.
But the company said the new administration helped bring a brighter spotlight to the cost issue. “President Trump’s personal involvement in the F-35 program accelerated the negotiations and sharpened our focus on driving down the price,” the company said in a statement last moth. The new agreement with the Pentagon includes 90 aircraft, 55 for the U.S. military and 35 for international partners and sales, with the highest number, at eight, heading to Australia. Of the U.S. aircraft, 44 will go to the Air Force, nine to the Marine Corps and two to the Navy.
Lockheed, along with partners Arlington-based BAE Systems Inc. and Falls Church-based Northrop Grumman Corp., had already committed to spending $170 million in the Blueprint for Affordability program and $250 million under the Sustainment Cost Reduction Initiative to further save on costs.
The delivery of this lot will begin in early 2018.
“With initiatives like Blueprint for Affordability and the natural learning curve, we are substantially bringing the cost of each aircraft down,” said Jeff Babione, Lockheed Martin F-35 vice president and general manager, in a statement.
To date, eight countries use more than 200 F-35 aircraft, including Australia, Italy, Israel, Japan, Netherlands, Norway and the U.K. Lockheed has been on a mission to increase its overall international sales. Source: Aerospace, Military & Defense A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

If the company’s work sounds familiar but the name doesn’t, that’s because the name — formerly KW Associates — has changed since we wrote about it late 2015. The goal remains the same, however: Ampere Scientific hopes to provide “the first technical advancement in the specialty metals industry (manufacturers of titanium and nickel) in more than four decades,” according to its grant proposal abstract. As Oregon BEST explains it, vacuum arc remelting furnaces generate an electric arc, or plasma column, that melts a consumable electrode, burning off impurities and creating a large ingot of the specialty metal, which can be used in a wide range of products. The problem — and the opportunity for Ampere Scientific — is that without precise control of the process, waste is tremendous, upward of 40 percent for electrical input and 8 percent in yield.

Ampere Scientific Grabs Federal Grant For Energy-Saving Metals Manufacturing Technology A Corvallis company aiming to unlock big energy and material savings — and that means dollars — in the specialty metals industry has won a $225,000 federal grant to develop its technology. Ampere Scientific is working on ways to more precisely control an old and inefficient process of making specialty metals ingots in vacuum arc remelting furnaces. Sounds arcane, but a lot of money could be at stake — approaching $800 million, the company believes. Ampere Scientific is a small company, with just five employees. But that’s up from two a year ago, and the company has plans to bring on another electric engineer soon, according to Oregon BEST, the state’s A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

Ampere first developed what it calls “Arc Position Sensing” to give manufacturers a way to see and adjust the arc. With the new grant, it’s building on that to develop “VARmetric technology,” to yield finer control of the arc. The technology “could save 40 to 50 percent of the energy currently lost in the use of these furnaces, while improving ingot quality and reducing much of the $800 million in lost revenues annually through material waste and associated electrical inefficiencies,” Ampere Scientific CEO Paul King said in a statement. Steel Supplier Moves Headquarters To Elk Grove PDM Steel Service Centers, a steel supplier for the western states, has moved its headquarters from Stockton to Elk Grove, city officials announced last month. The
company employs 19 managers and administrators at its headquarters. PDM Steel Service Centers Inc. is a 60-year-old steel supplier with 10 locations in California, Washington, Nevada, Colorado, Idaho and Utah. The company said in a blog post in August it was moving to Elk Grove because of its proximity to Sacramento, which it said would provide “greater accessibility for our people, our customers and our business partners.” “We know our employees will be happy being part of the Elk Grove community, and we’re all very excited about this next chapter in our company’s long history,” said Sean Mollins, president and chief operating officer of PDM Steel, in a statement prepared by the city. The company has signed a lease for 10,000 square feet of office space at 9245 Laguna Springs Dr. The site is within a 72,000-square-foot office building at the Laguna Gateway project by Jackson Properties. Following the relocation, Laguna Gateway is now 100 percent occupied. PDM Steel distributes a line of steel products to a range of industries. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Los Angeles-based Reliance Steel & Aluminum. Reliance Steel & Aluminum Co. is the largest metals service center company in North America, with more than 300 locations in 40 states and 12 other countries, according to the city of Elk Grove.

PDM Steel reached out to Jackson Properties last year about leasing space at Laguna Gateway. City officials then hustled to give PDM the “red carpet” treatment with speedy permitting, said Darrell Doan, economic development director for the city of Elk Grove. The relocation may help Elk Grove establish a business-friendly brand for its corporate office space, Doan said. “It’s a small deal by regional standards, but for Elk Grove it’s a big deal and it helps us plant the flag for office relocation,” he said. Sunnyvale Startup Gets $22M To Bring ‘Heads Up’ AR Cockpit Tech To The Street Heads-up display technology from Digilens is already flying in the skies, thanks to a partnership with avionics tech powerhouse Rockwell Collins. Another partnership with BMW is bringing the Sunnyvale-based startup’s tech to motorcycle helmets this year. And now it has raised $22 million in new funding from strategic partners Sony, Panasonic, Foxconn, Continental and venture backers to change the way automobile drivers and others see the world. “Our mission is to get DigiLens into every augmented reality product out there. Anywhere you are looking through glass and you want to see data, that will be us,” says founder and CEO Jonathan Waldren. This may sound like a tall boast from the head of a 42-person company that has raised only a total of $35 million in eight years. But Digilens hasn’t used the traditional Silicon Valley funding strategy to get its waveguide optics platform where it is now. Waldren has primarily bootstrapped the long process, winning military research grants and partnering with key companies that it wants as big customers in the future. “About 60 percent of our funding has come from our strategic investors

Do Apprentices Need Formal Qualifications? Despite many in industry requesting that they be retained the government has decided not to include formal qualifications in new apprenticeship standards. TheTrailblazer Apprenticeship program was introduced with the laudable aim of giving employers the power to fashion training according to their needs. The first such programs were implemented in 2013 with eight employer-led training programs. By January 2017, over 215 employer groups had stepped forward through the Trailblazer programme to develop over 490 new apprenticeship standards. In April 2017 the Institute for Apprentices was established to give employers a stronger role in the leadership of the apprenticeship system, including the sanctioning of ‘end-point assessments (EPAs)’ to evaluate whether trainees have achieved the required level of knowledge, skills and behaviours deemed competent by employers.

The Richard Review of Apprentices in 2012 identified a need to move away from detailed occupational standards and ‘bureaucratic box-ticking qualifications’. According to a report published by the Institute for Apprentices, government was encouraged instead to ‘free up its process requirements and focus more on the outcome of an apprenticeship: the skills, knowledge and behaviour that an apprentice can demonstrate at the end of their apprenticeship.’ It added that EPAs are an attempt to ‘address employers’ concerns that under the old system they could hire someone who had successfully completed an apprenticeship but they would not always be capable of actually doing the job they were meant to be trained in.’ There are those who want to see vocational, industry backed and developed qualifications retained in order to maintain standards, one of whom is John Hillier, chairman of EAL, the specialist awarding organization. He told MPs that such qualifications are essential to prove competence, transferability and give confidence to employers and customers. “Time after time, employers have requested the inclusion of qualifications. They’ve always used them, they trust them and they like them – so why wouldn’t they keep using them? This is going to become even more important in the coming decades,” he said. “The new system of assessment of apprentices being imposed by government is experimental at this stage – no other European country uses it as the sole method of assessment.” Source: The Engineer A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST • $PAC-089_A2Z_Manufacturing_3.875x5.125_AprMay2015.indd 1

The Manufacturer’s Secret Weapon The Millennial Conundrum Although American manufacturing never completely deserted this country, the truth is outsourcing has been the norm since the early 1980’s, particularly production of consumer products. A plethora of issues exist as to why these manufacturing jobs disappeared: The perceived notion of economic advantage, skewed trade agreements, tax incentives, and as of late, domestic automation, all contribute to this complex issue. The hard fact is many consumer products can sell for less when manufactured off shore. Over the last six to eight years, a strong reshoring trend has come to the forefront. The companies surviving the 2007-2008 peak and subsequent years’ depression have learned a great deal about how to effectively compete against outsourcing. But now the conundrum – an aging and shrinking labor pool and a fickle millennial workforce has manufacturers across the nation struggling to fill open positions. The millennial generation, while very intelligent and creative, but through no fault of their own, are having a hard time integrating into today’s work force. They have been programed to go to college whether they were suited for college or not. They have been told they are special. They have been told they can be anything they want to be. They grew up with Game Boys, cell phones, and video games and expect instant gratification courtesy of Amazon and eBay. They are a result of our modern technological environment. From a manufacturing standpoint young candidates are hard to manage because they are impatient and don’t feel they are making a memorable impact. So now it becomes the challenge for industry to pick up the gauntlet. How do you train and stimulate new hires to understand they are making a valuable contribution? Scout Systems has successfully addressed the challenge! Last year Scout Systems introduced their new hardware-software suite of manufacturing aids: Tracker, Compass, and HQ! Tracker will aid in A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •
44 • FEB / MAR 2017
monitoring nearly every movement and operation, timing them to the second, a target to be bested. Compass provides digital visual work instructions, reducing training time and frustration for the new hire. HQ provides the data collection component for analysis, and process improvement. Working together these three components are revolutionizing manufacturing. Now you’re probably asking yourself how does this hardware-software help the employee? Manufacturing is a lot like the game of golf. It is a game you can’t win! In its purest sense, golf a game between you, the ball, and the field. No matter how well you play the game, there is always one less stroke to be had. It is the same in manufacturing and continuous improvement – there is always some way to improve. Millennials are very creative and visually stimulated. As in the game of golf there is always one less second or step to be gained. It allows the employee to challenge him or herself to shave the tack time or to suggest a change in the process order, or in some way improve productivity. At the end of the day the HQ scorecard will tell the story and kudos will abound. Millennials, as do we all, appreciate affirmation when we are making an impact! That’s more solar than the state’s total installed capacity — 218 megawatts — as of the end of the third quarter last year. It’s also more than the program’s limit of 150 total megawatts, which means Business Oregon will pare down the participants, enrolling the projects that it determines are most likely to be built in the next year. The big response was a gratifying surprise to David Brown, who runs Obsidian Renewables, one of the state’s leading solar developers. He spearheaded lobbying for the subsidy in recent years, finally winning passage last March. “I thought we had to do something to help get languishing programs going,” Brown said. “Apparently, it’s been enormously successful.” Brown, whose company could directly benefit from the subsidy, conceded that falling costs had already begun to improve the economics of utility-scale solar development in the state. “That’s certainly helping to fuel this flurry of projects,” he said. “But as a onetime, short-term program to ensure that projects get built, the incentive is a great thing for Oregon.”

Aerospace Groups Merge, Vow To Persuade Boeing To Make Next New Airliner In Puget Sound Region Two Washington state aerospace industry groups have merged operations, saying they’re eliminating overlap and joining forces to persuade Boeing to make its next new airliner in the Puget Sound region. The boards of directors of the Aerospace Futures Alliance of Washington (AFA) and the Washington Aerospace Partnership (WAP) unanimously supported merging the two industry organizations, effective immediately, following a year of talks, said AFA President and CEO Kelly Maloney, who remains the leader of the combined entity. Kelly Maloney, the President and CEO of the Aerospace Futures Alliance, a business and advocacy group that tries to promote and defend the interests of the aerospace industry and its almost 1,400 member companies in Washington state. “There was a lot of overlap between our boards of directors and members,” AFA Board Chairman Ben Hempstead said. “By merging the organizations, we can streamline our offerings and lessen the confusion in the industry of having too many aerospace entities to belong to.”
Brown said building projects will help strengthen the industry.“When companies and counties gain experience getting projects done, that helps bring costs down,” he said. “So even though this program is very limited, I think its impact could be felt for a long time.”
Hempstead, a senior executive with Boeing tool and factory automation supplier Electroimpact in Mukilteo, represents one of 1,400 aerospace and manufacturing companies that belong to the AFA, which aims to advance the interests of the aerospace sector in the state through its lobbying, outreach and education efforts, as well as recruiting new companies to move here.

space Partnership. The AFA recently announced it was publishing a new quarterly aerospace magazine called LIFT. WAP President Alex Pietsch, who has served on both AFA and WAP’s boards over the years, will join the merged organization’s newly formed executive committee. Pietsch said the new combined entity will lead the effort to encourage Boeing to build its next new airplane in Washington, which could be announced within the next few years. “Boeing’s selection of Washington as the final assembly location for its ‘Middle of the Market’ ( or MOM) aircraft, as it is known, and a future 737 replacement, are essential to maintaining the vitality of the aerospace industry and the broader economy of the entire state of Washington,” Pietsch said in statement. For more than two years, published reports have stated Boeing has been developing plans for a mid-sized new jet with between 200 and 250 seats to compete with Airbus A321 neo. High-Tech ‘Megafactory’ In San Jose To Create Hundreds Of Jobs Velodyne LiDAR is in the final set-up stages of opening what it calls a “megafactory” in south San Jose to produce three-dimensional sensors in demand for the self-driving car market, among other uses. “Production will start soon,” a company spokesman said, who added that the facility will employ “hundreds” but not as many as 500. Velodyne closed on the 200,000-square-foot building at 5521 Hellyer Ave., last month, according to county records, purchasing it for $23.4 million from M West. The building had earlier been the home of Nanosolar Inc., a producer of

“This Megafactory requires to manufacture its cutting edge, long-range sensors in a single location, as well as the ability to scale to meet growing global customer demand for LiDAR tvtdiecast.com 800 280 2278 while pursuing an aggressive growth ▼strategy,” Mark Shandley, Velodyne 9001:2008 Certified vice president of operations, said in aISO news release. “In addition, the location in Santa Clara County is ideal, as it allows us to produce LiDAR sensors in the US with a skilled workforce alongside precision robotic manufacturing processes so we can continue to grow and deliver world-class products,” the release said. LiDAR sensors are used for industrial applications and drone aircraft in addition to autonomous cars. Ford Motor Co. and Chinese search engine company Baidu poured $150 million into Velodyne LiDAR in its first round of venture funding last August. The company said at the time that it would use the funding to scale up its manufacturing and research and development. It employed more than 200 people then and planned to double that number by the end of the year. Source: Silicon Valley Business Journal
Uber Hires NASA Aircraft Engineer To Aid In Developing Flying Car Platform Bloomberg News reports former NASA advanced aircraft engineer Mark Moore has been hired by Uber as “director of engineering for aviation.” At Uber, Moore will work on Uber’s flying car initiative called Uber Elevate. Moore is quoted saying, “I can’t think of another company in a stronger position to be the leader for this new ecosystem and make the urban electric VTOL market real.” Bloomberg notes that Uber isn’t building a “flying car yet,” but recently “laid out a radical vision for airborne commutes and identified technical challenges it said it wanted to help the nascent industry solve” in its own white paper. The Verge reports Uber isn’t interested in developing its own flying car, but rather wants to “contribute to the nascent but growing VTOL ecosystem and to start to play whatever role is most helpful to accelerate this industry’s development.” A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •
