Editor’s Corner How many aerospace and defense systems can we make? And like the stock market, will this A&D (aerospace and defense) industry correct itself?

While looking at the data for the aerospace industry and the show in France, I was overwhelmed by the numbers of aircraft orders and the dollar amount this represents. According to the reliable sources in the aviation industry, globally, commercial airlines are expected to generate $865 billion in 2019.

In 2018 both commercial and defense sectors saw good growth and this is a rare market occurrence as these two markets have historically been counter-cyclical.

On the commercial side we have an increasing number of travelers worldwide and affluence is the key factor here. It is expected that 2019 will set a new record in terms of the number of scheduled passengers with almost 4.6 billion, around 130 percent higher than in 2004.

The number of scheduled passengers handled by the global airline industry has increased in all but one of the last 15 years. Scheduled passengers refer to the number of passengers who have booked a flight with a commercial airline. As of 2017, the Asia-Pacific region had the highest share of airline passenger traffic, accounting for around one third of the global total.

Plane sales are estimated to be at more than 14,000 backlogged orders. This has led to an increase in demand for airplane deliveries. Boeing has forecasted the need for 42,730 new jets to accommodate the growing passenger traffic and upcoming aircraft retirements. APAC leads the way here, with 40% of the demand accounting for 16,930 deliveries.

The total world military expenditure rose to $1822 billion in 2018, an increase of 2.6 per cent from 2017, according to new data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). The five biggest spenders in 2018 were the United States, China, Saudi Arabia, India and France, which together accounted for 60 per cent of global military spending. Military spending by the USA increased for the first time since 2010, while spending by China grew for the 24th consecutive year.

The spending boom is driven, above all, by the contest between America and China for primacy in Asia. In 2018 it raised its already large defense budget for the first time in seven years, ending an era of belt-tightening imposed by Congress.The boost reflected theTrump administration’s embrace of what it calls “great power competition” with Russia and China.

In closing I highly recommend that you set your sights on these two industries and their offspring. Many sectors grow as a result of these two major sectors expanding; SATCOM, wafer, oil & gas, and commercial sectors grow as well.

Reshoring Initiative 2018 Data Report: A Record 1,389 Companies Announce the Return of 145,000 Jobs In 2018 the number of companies reporting new reshoring and foreign direct investment (FDI) was at the highest level in history, up 38% from 2017.The combined reshoring and related FDI announcements totaled over 145,000 jobs, the second highest annual rate in history. Including upward revisions of 36,000 jobs in prior years, the total number of manufacturing jobs brought to the United States from offshore is over 757,000 since the manufacturing employment low of 2010.

Announcements Continued Allowing for a two-year lag from announcement to hire, the cumulative announcements since 2010 have driven 31% of the total increase in U.S. manufacturing jobs during that period and 3.3% of total end-of-2018 manufacturing employment of 12.8 million.

The Reshoring Initiative largely attributes the increases to greater U.S. competitiveness due to corporate tax and regulatory cuts. Similar to the previous few years, FDI continued to exceed reshoring in terms of total jobs added, but reshoring has closed most of the gap since 2015.

The Reshoring Initiative’s 2018 Reshoring Report contains data on U.S. reshoring and FDI by companies that have shifted production or sourcing from offshore to the United States. The report includes cumulative data from 2010 through 2018, as well as projections for 2019. The numbers demonstrate that reshoring and FDI are major contributing factors to the country’s rebounding manufacturing sector.

“We publish this data annually to show companies that their peers are successfully reshoring and that they should reevaluate their sourcing and siting decisions,” said Harry Moser, founder and president of the Reshoring Initiative. “With 5 million manufacturing jobs still offshore, as measured by our $800 billion/year goods trade deficit, there is potential for much more growth.We call on the administration and Congress to enact policy changes to make the United States competitive again. Our CompetitivenessToolkit is available to help quantify the impact of policy alternatives, including a stronger skilled workforce, continued corporate tax and regulatory reductions as well as a lower U.S. dollar.”

A Deeper Dive into the 2018 Reshoring Data Reshoring and FDI have driven 31% of the total increase in U.S. manufacturing jobs since 2010 and 3.3% of total U.S. manufacturing employment as of 12/31/18.

Reshoring from China accounts for 59% of all reshoring.

Although China topped Germany for the greatest number of FDI jobs announced since 2010, China announced 12% fewer in 2018 than in 2017.

Quality, freight cost and total cost make up the top offshore drivers of the trend.

Proximity to market, government incentives, supply chain optimization, higher productivity, skilled workforce, and brand image/made in USA serve as the top domestic drivers.

Reshoring has been increasing at a similar rate as FDI, indicating that U.S. headquartered companies are starting to understand the U.S. production benefit that foreign companies have seen for the last few years.

Hurco Reports Second Quarter Results for Fiscal 2019 Hurco Companies, Inc. (Nasdaq Global Select Market: HURC) today reported results for the second fiscal quarter ended April 30, 2019. Hurco recorded net income of $5,252,000, or $0.76 per diluted share, for the second quarter of fiscal 2019 compared to net income of $3,751,000, or $0.55 per diluted share, for the corresponding period in fiscal 2018. For the first six months of fiscal 2019, Hurco reported net income of $11,906,000, or $1.73 per diluted share, compared to $6,688,000, or $0.98 per diluted share, for the corresponding period in fiscal 2018.

Orders for the second quarter of fiscal 2019 were $67,207,000, a decrease of $12,717,000, or 16%, compared to the corresponding period in fiscal 2018, and included an unfavorable currency impact of $2,550,000, or 3%, when translating foreign orders to U.S. dollars.

Orders for the first six months of fiscal 2019 were $135,214,000, a decrease of $21,617,000, or 14%, compared to the corresponding period in fiscal 2018, and included an unfavorable currency impact of $5,166,000, or 3%, when Michael Doar, Chief Executive Officer, stated, “Even though we are seeing some hesitation in customer demand in the European and Asia Pacific regions, the U.S. market has remained relatively stable. Bill changed the focus of the business to producing grooving tools and applied for patent 3,296,683. Lathe tools were known as bits and the tools were thin. THINBIT® was chosen as the product name.

The first production ofTHINBIT® was done at the home of William and Hazel Kaiser on Weisser Park Avenue in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Manufacturing was done in the garage. The employees used the bathroom and kitchen of the house. The sales office was in the attic of the house and was accessed via a set of pull down stairs. The raw material was purchased at a local hardware store. The idea was successful and the company grew.

In 1980 Kaiser Tool Company moved to Sherman Boulevard and continued to grow.

The site was located along the St Mary’s river and terrible flooding in 1982 threatened to destroy the business. The extraordinary efforts of the employees and a few sand bags from President Ronald Regan saved the factory.

In 1994 the company built an energy efficient new manufacturing facility on Centennial Drive. The site was purchased and the building was designed with future expansion in mind.

The three deliveries stand to generate approximately $477 million in revenue for Boeing this quarter. However, the Air Force has withheld $28 million payments per jet that doesn’t meet technical specifications outlined for the first 52 deliveries.

This winter, the Air Force twice halted its acceptance of KC-46 jets after military officials found foreign object debris on jets. Ramey said that prompted Boeing to conduct additional company and customer inspections of the jets and implement preventative action plans.

“We have also incorporated additional training, more rigorous clean-as-you-go practices and FOD awareness days across the company to stress the importance and urgency of this issue,” Ramey said.

Boeing aims to deliver 18 KC-46 jets by mid-year and 36 by year end, Ramey said.

Boeing Delivers Trio Of KC-46 Tankers To Air Force In Sales Boost Boeing delivered three KC-46 aerial refueling tankers to the Air Force this month, bringing the number of deliveries for the jets to 11.

The specially modified and militarized Boeing 767-airframe based jets that are built in Everett and flight-tested in Seattle.

One KC-46 was delivered to McConnell Air Force Base in Kansas, and two others were sent to Altus Air Force Base in Oklahoma, Boeing KC-46 tanker program spokesman Chick Ramey said.

“We are seeing a lot of good progress on the program with the deliveries this month,” Ramey said in an A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST

The revenue is needed by the Chicagobased jet maker because it is not delivering and booking sales of any 737 Max jets — its cash cow — after the worldwide grounding of that fleet following two crashes that killed a combined 346 people.

“More deliveries are important for Boeing and the Air Force customer,” said Michel Merluzeau, a Seattle-based analyst for AIR, an aviation market research firm. “But there are still unresolved issues with some of the systems that do not bring the KC46 to the level of operational readiness it should have been at today.”

Ramey said another recent important milestone for the jet, which has been plagued by years of delays and $3.6 billion in cost overruns, was its recent completion of certification testing at Edwards Air Force Base in California, involving refueling of F-35 fighters.

It’s Sharif-Askary’s job to upgrade the grid and help it to catch up.The MDS Orbit, as the device is called, is one of the building blocks he is using.

In a way, the Orbit is the Swiss Army knife of communication devices. Unlike home modems typically capable of accommodating just one source, be it a phone line cable or Ethernet, this device can receive and send encrypted data over a variety of wireless communications links and protocols including Ethernet, Wi-Fi, 3G, and public and private 4G LTE networks, as well as specialized radio. “There is no one-size-fits-all solution.With different wireless technology options available, we wanted to offer our customers one common platform that is customizable to fit the different wireless needs across their networks,” says Steven Ruggieri, senior product manager for the device.

For example, a large utility company may invest in private LTE spectrum to shuttle massive amounts of data across the network. Ruggieri says some customers send video to monitor the security of remote assets and verify the badges of everyone who enters. Other customers may opt for public networks and share their bandwidth with everyone else. Should part of the network go down, say, during a bad storm, the Orbit can seamlessly

transition to a different communication mode, such as from LTE to radio, to make sure that operators do not lose access to their most critical assets.

“With more smart devices being added to the grid, customers benefit from this new technology when that information can be quickly, reliably and securely relayed and acted on, and this is what our devices enable,” Ruggieri says.

The Orbit’s reach and versatility allow operators to digitally glue together remote parts of the grid, including substations, neighborhood transformers mounted on utility poles and other equipment. It even comes with its own “brain” on a computer chip so it can perform critical and timely calculations at the site — or, in industry speak, at the “edge” of the network — rather than losing precious seconds by sending the information to the cloud or control center for analysis. For example, it can help engineers figure out immediately what happens to solar production when a cloud moves above their farm.

NASA MSFC Materials & Process Development Offers Plan for 3D Printing to Sustain Astronauts During Missions Not surprisingly, NASA is working on new developments for space travel—partnering with Auburn University to create new sensing technology, materials for 3D printing in space, as well as new hardware and capacitors (devices used to store electricity).

In the latest from NASA MSFC Materials & Process Development, their goal is to create processes that can sustain production, recycling, and maintenance on-demand while astronauts are completing exploration missions.

Beginning with a variety of different sensing platforms, the Materials & Process Development document outlines plans for flexible sensing technology such as next-generation printed sensors and platforms to be used for monitoring the health of astronauts while at the International Space Station (ISS), along with the specific, unique materials and new processes to create such devices. The document also outlines the need for both assessing and integrating wireless communications and flexible parts.

There are further plans to collaborate with other organizations and universities to create an In-Space Manufacturing Digital Design & Verification Database, along with another catalog of what parts and systems are to be created during missions. NASA also plans to create new laboratory methods such as: • Ceramic powder processing – materials can be reduced and homogenized • Vibratory Mill – using 3-axes grinding action • Micro mill – fast grinding for low-volume batches, achieving < 50nm particle sizes • Powder treatment – forming gas within a fluidized bed for creating dielectric properties for ultracapacitors A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

For particle size measurements in nanotechnology, NASA’s intention is to understand mean particle size and distribution aids in powder milling for uniform sizing. Along with that, sample preparation is vital to gathering proper data.They also plan on developing nano-inks through formulation with ceramic and metallic powders and additives, along with creating ‘thick film ink formulations’ with three-roll mills: “Roller speed and spacing are both controllable and are key factors in the final product. Thin film inks require fewer additives (typically the powder material and a vehicle) and are used in direct write deposition systems.Therefore, lower viscosity is necessary, which can be achieved using a high-shear dispersion mixer.”

NASA has been using 3D printing for decades—long before anyone even knew what it was. In the past few years, however, as the technology has been launched into the mainstream with growing popularity, there have been numerous challenges where NASA encourages participants to compete in creating new 3D printing technology for the Moon and Mars, as well as space habitats and more. It’s demeaning. It’s rude. It’s insulting. It’s playing a bigger role than you think in preventing the U.S. from creating a new generation of workers and truly beginning the process of rebuilding its manufacturing heritage.”

Aparn a Mathur, a scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank, told the Society of Human Resource Management that “younger workers are reluctant to take on these [blue-collar] positions because … parents perceive these jobs as requiring a lot of manual hard work, which for certain positions that have become more high-tech, is no longer true.The image of these jobs as being hard and ‘dirty’ often discourages people from applying.”

In my defense I never considered the term blue collar to be either outdated or negative in any way. I have had the privilege to tour many factories over the past fifteen years and have admired the people who are building things. In fact, at one of IndustryWeek’s Best Plants conferences a few years ago the CEO of an auto division said that he’s not the most important person in the organization; it’s the person who is putting the brakes on your car that is the important one.

So, I began asking others for their take on this term. Dan Johnston, co-founder of WorkStep, who is helping companies find warehouse, manufacturing and trucking workers, doesn’t use the term either. He prefers industrial workers.

Let’s change the term to “Industrial Artisans” as the work requires a high level of skill.

I have always considered myself to be part of the solution.Well, it turns out I might, in fact, be part of the problem.

After writing an article discussing how AI can help blue-collar workers, I got called to task by Jesse Z Melton, a process consultant at Harpers Ferry Toolworks.

“You are doing a great disservice to our industry,” he said, “by using the outdated term of blue collar. We are trying hard to attract the labor we need and using an outdated word that unfortunately conjures up images of undereducated, dirty, low paid, sweatshop jobs, is just not correct. These are high-tech jobs in clean environments and we have to get that message out.”

And it isn’t just Melton that feels this way. Another reader also admonished me. “Stop saying blue collar.

And when it comes to recruiting workers at technical schools, Professor Brenda Bouse from Maryville University doesn’t care for the term. “I think the term feeds into the stigma that manufacturing is dirty and that’s so far from the truth. Today manufacturing is full of technologies that are creating very cool products.”

Brousse stresses that the point is to encourage young workers, including women who wouldn’t normally consider manufacturing a career, that it’s a great career to enter, so we shouldn’t be using that term.

StandardAero Hosts Rolls-Royce RB211-535 Working Together Team StandardAero recently hosted the 2019 Rolls-Royce RB211535 Working Together Team (WTT) Customer Conference its maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility in San Antonio, TX, USA. The event involved over 80 attendees from 20 different companies, including operators, owners and support providers from Asia, Europe, Oceana and the Americas.

Rolls-Royce uses WTT conferences to maximize coordination with its program customers on the RB211 and Trent families of threespool widebody turbofan engines. The events offer an opportunity for operators to gain insights into the latest product improvements and program updates, as well as to benefit from best practices relating to these widely used engine models.

StandardAero continues to ramp-up to full capability in support of the RB211-535 end-of-life engine maintenance services partnership signed with Rolls-Royce in 2018. StandardAero this week commenced final assembly on the first two customer engines process at San Antonio, with delivery expected next month.

Under the partnership agreement, responsibility for RB211-535E4 in-service support is being transferred from Rolls-Royce’s Derby, UK location to StandardAero’s 810,000 sq. ft. facility in San Antonio.

The facility has already received FAA and EASA certification for RB211-535 disassembly, cleaning, inspection, repair, assembly and test (excluding performance), and full approval is expected to follow the correlation of two RB211 engine test cells at the San Antonio facility within the next month, enabling performance test certification to be completed.

“StandardAero is now delivering on its promise to provide RB211535 operators with reliable go-forward support for this acclaimed engine family,” said Kevin Collins,Vice President & General Manager, Commercial Programs at StandardAero’s San Antonio facility. “We were delighted to host Rolls-Royce and its customers for the WTT conference, which provided an opportunity to demonstrate to the RB211-535 community the investments we have made in preparing to support the global Boeing 757 fleet over the coming decades.”

Generating 40,100 to 43,100 pounds of thrust, the RB211-535E4 powers the Boeing 757, which is flown by many of the world’s major airlines, with half of the fleet in-service in North America.

a barn in 1939 by 3 owners, and John Smith was the company’s first employee. John left the company to serve inWorldWar II, and when he returned, he learned that the business was for sale. After a discussion with his wife Verna, the young couple made the bold decision to purchase the business. Under John’s tenure,Albina grew to become a fabrication shop with expertise in bending any form of steel. As the company evolved, its work in plate, angle, channel, beam and hollow structural sections soon outgrew the pipe projects.

John’s son Bill too proudly served our country, doing a tour in Vietnam after graduating from Portland State University. Once he returned from Vietnam, he came back into the family business, eventually taking it over as the 2nd generation Smith. Under Bill’s reign, the

Like his father Bill, Brian worked in the business during summers and holidays. He too made the decision to make the family business his career after he had graduated from college with a degree in business and entrepreneurship from the University of Colorado.

By all accounts, business has been good at Albina, so good that they outgrew the facility they were in. In 2001, the company moved to its current location, occupying 50,000 square feet sitting on 5 acres. Under the leadership of 3rd generation Smiths, Brian and his wife Jaime, the company has grown 4-fold.

You Can’t Grow Unless You Embrace Technology When Brian and Jaime took over, they began to explore ways to utilize technology for productivity improvements.

Brian says it was back in 2011 that the company began aggressively investing in digital (CNC) technologies.

Brian is an avid reader, and he had learned much about ‘Industry 4.0’ and the IoT (Internet of Things). He recognized that to ensure the success of the company over

the next decades, Albina had to invest in tec hnolog ies that would enable data gathering and data analysis.

These technologies, he knew, would facilitate Albina’s path for continuous improvement. He and his IT consultant developed an infrastructure based on the IPad mini.

The company rolled Modesto Junior College Science Community Center (Helical Stairs)- stringers, out its first IPads to handrail, second floor guard rails and observatory guardrails. staff in late 2018, and today the entire shop staff is equipped with one.

Brian says, “Through the software we have developed and with the IPads, our staff can instantaneously measure each machine’s uptime.We want to know what each job is actually costing to manufacture, and if an operator has a holdup, we want to fix whatever is causing it.”The IPads are also used to access mill test reports, production sc hedules, shift schedules, and even photographs of proper machine set-ups.

Today, Albina has integrated QR codes into their physical marketing materials, including on their business cards. Through the QR codes, buyers can download the full company directory, and select

the contacts they want in their database.

Customers also have access to calculators on Albina’s website to assist with complicated bending computations such as spiral bending math.

Jaime says, “We had the idea that our customers would value seeing their orders as they progressed through the shop, so we created a picture vault individualized to each customer. Through it, they can see their order at every stage – raw material, production, quality control, and packing – and their pictures can be sorted by purchase order.” A sampling of the positive feedback the company has received: “The vault gives us a little window into your world and provides some reassurance for purchasing agents and project managers that things are going according to plan.”

Jaime and Brian were honored when they were asked to participate (along with a collective of other AISC bender/ rollers) in the development of the first ever Design Guide of its kind in the US offering information on the fabrication, design and detailing of curved metal products.

The end reference book, titled Design Guide 33 ‘Curved Member Design’ was released in October of 2018. Jaime says the initiative was a collaboration between AISC (American Institute of Steel Construction) and members of the AISC Bender Roller Committee.

Investment Inevitably Includes New Machines In the last few years, Albina has purchased new machinery. One such investment was the Davi MCP30, the first type of bending machine with the ‘iRoll’ smart camera system. Brian says that the MCP30 has the ability to learn and remember how different materials bend, where the rolls need to be positioned, and how much spring back is associated with a bend/material. Jaime says that Albina specializes in structural steel, tube and pipe bending, plate rolling and fabrication. Brian says, “We are able to bend spirals from very large sections of HSS — many spiral bends we provide have faces larger than 8” (in fact we have spiral bent HSS as large as 20” x 12” and could bend even larger sections).

We accomplished this by introducing a unique invention/process, combining a commercially available induction heating unit with an extremely sturdy frame, a homemade feeding system, and a hydraulic unit that imparts just a bit of camber and twist at the same time.”

Albina Co., Inc. provided 109,000# of bent steel for the Eli Lilly San Diego Biotech Center in La Jolla, CA. Eli Lilly doubled the size of its research facility to 300,000 square feet during this project.

Paris Airshow: Difficult Decisions For Boeing Lie Ahead

With almost 2,500 companies exhibiting and 320,000 visitors expected over seven days, the show at Le Bourget on the outskirts of Paris is one of the aerospace and defence industry’s key trade fairs for a sector that generates global revenues of some $685bn annually.

Expect most of the press attention to be focussed on Boeing’s CEO Dennis Muilenburg, and how the firm is working with aviation regulators to get its troubled 737 Max aircraft back in the air.

Piling on the pressure facing Boeing executives, just this week a US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) official indicated that airlines’ fleets of Boeing 737 Max aircraft might be grounded until the end of the year - longer than many had been expecting.

Boeing’s Dennis Muilenburg says the firm’s priority is getting the 737 Max flying again For Airbus - under new CEO Guillaume Faury - it is the first airshow at Le Bourget since it made the decision to end production of its flagship A380. But the much-heralded unveiling of its A321XLR, is likely to garner positive headlines.

This is a single-aisle long-range airliner which Airbus hopes will generate new orders. Several carriers have already reportedly expressed an interest, including IAG - the parent group of British Airways and Iberia.

For Airbus this is possibly a strategy to counter Boeing’s eventual NMA (New Midsize Aircraft) that the US firm has been working on.The twinaisled NMA, also labelled the 797, has been designed in two variants: a 225-seat plane with a 9,300km (5,700 mile) range and a 275-seater flying 8,300km.

US firm magniX is showing off two of its electric motors at the show. It is working with North America’s largest seaplane operator to retrofit the entire fleet with electric engines and magniX motors will also power the new all-electric Alice, a small passenger aircraft from Israeli firm Eviation.

MagniX says it wants to transform the “middle mile” segment of the market - that’s cargo and passenger flights up to 1,000 miles (1,600km). “As we debut our propulsion system at the Paris Airshow, we’re one step closer to all-electric air transport starting in 2022,” says magniX chief executive Roei Ganzarski.

Adding It Up: This Factory Is 3D-Printing ArmSized Metal Parts For The World’s Largest Jet Engine

Nestled in the rolling hills of the Po Valley, the small town of Cameri looks like a postcard Italian village, complete with a classic piazza surrounded by traditional-style buildings and a church. It’s a startling contrast, then, that less than a mile from the center of this village sits a major hub of aerospace innovation, anchored by one of largest 3D-printing factories in the world.

Operated by Avio Aero, a GE Aviation company, the plant makes the arm-sized blades for the GE9X engine, the world’s largest jet engine.

GE’s Cameri operations are indicative of the advances taking place in manufacturing today. Making blades for an engine turbine typically involves casting them from redhot alloys or pounding them out on massive forging machines. At Cameri, though, it’s a quiet, controlled process that takes place inside humming, refrigerator-sized 3D printers that stand in neat rows inside a cavernous hall the size of a warehouse.

The printers were built by Arcam, a company GE acquired in 2016 and folded inside its GE Additive business. They use electron beams to weld together millions of grains of fine powdered metal, one hair-thin layer after another, to form some of the jet engine’s most durable parts.

Additive manufacturing is still a young industry, albeit one that’s growing rapidly. In 2015 GE Aviation opened its Additive Technology Center near its headquarters in Cincinnati, where engineers from GE Aviation and GE Additive conceive, design and manufacture 3D-printed components for jets and other products, and also improve on 3D printers. GE’s Power and Healthcare divisions are also exploring 3D printing, as are many of GE Additive’s customers, who use the technology to build everything from bicycles to skull implants.

At more than 11 feet in diameter, the engine is about the width of an entire Boeing 737. A series of innovative designs, however, means that despite its physical size, the GE9X improves fuel efficiency by 10% over the GE90 engine, which powers most current 777 planes.

One of the innovations involves making the blades from a wonder material called titanium aluminide (TiAl).

Jet designers love TiAl because it’s light and strong — but until 3D printing became a realistic option, manufacturing with the material was difficult, requiring molding and expensive tools. The alloy also tended to come out brittle. Arcam’s 3D printers solve those problems by welding metallic powder with an electron beam at temperatures up to 1,000 degrees Celsius. Following a software blueprint designed by GE engineers, each printer builds several of the 40-centimeterlong blades at once, layer by layer, over the course of a couple days.

To meet rising demand, GE recently expanded Cameri’s manufacturing space by 6,500 square feet to 26,000 square feet. The greater size allows the facility to host a total of 35 Arcam machines: 31 A2X printers and four Spectra H machines, which are larger and produce more parts at once. The expansion will allow Cameri to produce 60,000 turbine blades a year by 2023.

The GE9X engine had its maiden flight last year, and the Boeing jets they’re going to power are expected to begin deliveries to airlines next year. Avio Aero ramped up to continuous production at Cameri this spring. The company expects to add another 16 Spectra H machines to the plant in the near future, followed by a possible replacement of the smaller A2X printers with the Spectra H. “Thanks to the expansion and these new machines, we will definitely be able to produce a larger number of blades,” said Avio Aero’s Marco Bozzola, who operates the machines at the plant. “We can also count on greater mechanical and electronic stability, and we can even consider new geometries.”

manufacturing and 44 percent would not consider a career in manufacturing. Outside of compensation, respondents listed the following as the top things manufacturers could do to be more attractive places to work: • Provide clearly defined career advancement opportunities (44 percent).

• Make the work environment safer (42 percent).

• Provide job security, even in the face of advances in automation (41 percent).

• Fifty-six percent of Minnesotans say they would consider working in manufacturing, and this percentage increases if they were exposed to manufacturing careers through family members in the industry or through education during their youth.

Thirty-one percent have not worked in manufacturing because they do not have the right education or training. Minnesotans believe manufacturing companies are techforward, but the rise of automation holds them back from pursuing long-term careers in the industry. Three in four respondents think manufacturers use technology to its fullest potential, but Minnesotans are split as to whether that’s good or bad. Half think automation will replace jobs, but 48 percent also think it will create new job opportunities in areas like customer service, technology and engineering.

:2015 Manufacturers Must Promote Themselves To Attract Workers Some 12,838,000 million Americans held manufacturing jobs in April 2019. That’s 12 percent more than in April 2010, it’s the highest total since December 2008. Overall, the U.S. unemployment rate fell to 3.6 percent in April 2019—the lowest rate since December 1969.

As great as those numbers are, they could be even better.Talk to manufacturers anywhere in the country, and they’ll tell you their top challenge is the inability to attract skilled workers.

Minnesota manufacturers are no exception. More than 8,300 manufacturing companies are located in the North Star State, but they continue to lose talent to other fields like healthcare and high tech.

To understand why, business and technology consulting firm West Monroe Partners polled 1,000 Minnesota workers aged 18 to 40. The results are thought-provoking.

While 70 percent of Minnesotans perceive the industry positively, 75 percent have never worked in A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

“Given the majority of the population doesn’t want to work in manufacturing, education about the benefits and changing digital environment needs to start early,” says Dennis McRae, leader of the firm’s consumer and industrial products industry team. “In fact, our poll showed Minnesotans who learned about manufacturing careers before they turned 18 were more likely to have a positive perception of the industry and consider launching a career there.That early education can be new trade programs focused on using advanced digital manufacturing technologies or involvement in the youth community at large.”

Manufacturers have done a lot to improve the perception of their industry in recent years.

Raytheon To Merge With United Technologies In All-Stock Deal Raytheon In Tucson Will Manufacture The Navy’s AIM-9X Missiles.

Raytheon Co. and United Technologies Corp. announced a merger that could shake up the defense contracting world, particularly in Arizona.

The combined company will serve a range of business sector, from jet engines and avionics courtesy of United Technologies to advanced missile systems, such as those manufactured by Raytheon in Tucson, south of Phoenix.

The deal, announced on June 9, will see Raytheon (NYSE: RTN) shareholders receive 2.3348 shares of United Technologies (NYSE: UTX).

The combined company will be called Raytheon Technologies. The deal, termed a merger of equals, is slated to be completed in the first half of 2020.

Such a merger would produce a company with $74 billion in annual revenue, the second-largest defense contractor in the U.S. behind only Boeing Co., which also has operations in Mesa.

Waltham, Massachusetts-based Raytheon, which manufactures an array of missiles in Tucson, is Arizona’s largest defense contractor in terms of the amount of its government contracts, which totaled more than $37 billion during 2018, according to Business Journal research. The company has more than 12,000 workers in Tucson.

month: one to upgrade its High-Speed Anti-radiation Missile, or HARM, and the other to continue production of its AIM-9X Sidewinder missile program.

When the deal is finished, Farmington, Connecticut-based United Technology shareholders will own 57% of the company and Raytheon shareholders will own 43%.

“With our enhanced capabilities, we will deliver value to our customers by anticipating and addressing their most complex challenges, while delivering significant value to shareowners,” said Tom Kennedy, Raytheon Chairman and CEO, in a statement.

Under terms of the deal, Kennedy would become chairman of the combined company and United Technologies CEO and Chairman Gregory Hayes would become CEO for the first two years, after which Hayes would become chairman and CEO, according to documents filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

The merger is subject to approval by shareholders, but it would be expensive for either company to back out. Such a move would cost United Technologies $2.4 billion if it opted out and Raytheon $1.8 billion if it chose to leave, according to SEC filings.

Both Hayes and Kennedy would have their employment extended following the merger in equal deals that call for $1.6 million in annual salary and about $13 million in annual equity awards. Both contracts allow for bonuses and other compensation as well, according to SEC filings.

UnitedTechnologies already had plans to split into three companies.The split with its heating and cooling company Carrier as well as the Otis Elevator Co. are on a separate track, and the deal with Raytheon will not change that.

The Ohio-based producer of aluminum-body RVs said the single-axle trailers, Bambi and Caravel, were initially launched in the 1960s.

‘Bambi’ has been a nickname for Airstream travel trailers for decades and earned that moniker on a Cape Town-to-Cairo Airstream caravan trip through Africa, led by Airstream founder Wally Byam. Residents and the tens of millions of people who visit the state every year combine to spend 446 million participant days outdoors in Washington, according to the state office of Outdoor Recreation and Economic Development. The state’s national parks are a big reason why.

Puget Sound Region’s Other Airplane Maker Wins National Recognition The Puget Sound region’s other airplane manufacturer has won some big recognition.

Vashon Aircraft of Woodinville won an Editors’ Choice award from Flying Magazine for its Ranger R7 lightsport aircraft, which sells for less than $100,000.

“Vashon Aircraft surprised everybody last spring by introducing the Ranger R7 light sport aircraft as a fully typeapproved model that was ready for handover to buyers,” the magazine reports. “It’s a perfect Cessna 150 replacement for a busy flight school, or a fun two-seater for a sport pilot to take on adventures of a lifetime.”

Vashon Aircraft Chief Operating Officer Scott Taylor said the company is “super excited” by the honor.“It’s amazing that a 20-person startup in

Woodinville is even in the running against such big names,”Taylor said.

Entrepreneur John Torode, owners of avionics maker Dynon, owns Vashon.

Kirkland Startup Works Toward Aircraft Cabin Humidification System HumBay Health LLC, a Kirkland-based aerospace startup, is raising $2 million to further develop its aircraft cabin humidification system.

President Robert Nelson says HumBay’s system will cost $45,500 and can be installed on old and new Boeing and Airbus jets, or those of regional jet makers like Embraer and Mitsubishi Aircraft.

The system can increase the humidity in an aircraft to between 20 and 25 percent without water problems or corrosion.

HumBay Health, which is raising a seed round, intends to build the system itself or develop an alliance with a major aerospace manufacturer that is licensed to incorporate the humidification system into commercial and private jets.

HumBay, which has developed the system since 2012 and patented it in 2017, says its potential market is huge, with little competition and significant barriers to entry. The company points to Boeing’s 20-year forecast, which projects rising demand for 42,700-plus regional, singleaisle and wide-body airplanes.

Nelson said HumBay’s strategy is to align with premium airlines looking for partners that want to offer travelers better service and healthier experiences. He forecasts sales of 83 units in 2020, and 1,817 units by 2023, according to materials being shared with prospective investors.

Apple Expected To Take Massive South Lake Union Office Project

In 2018, Apple said it planned to add an additional 1,000 employees in Seattle by 2022. It’s unclear how many employees Apple has in the area now.

Apple Inc. is expected to move into a massive office project in Seattle’s South Lake Union, according to multiple commercial real estate sources.

A 630,000-square-foot lease would give Apple enough space for 4,200 employees using the industry standard of 150 square feet per employee.

One of the sources — who asked not to be named to protect business relationships — said Apple plans to take all of 333 Dexter, a Kilroy Realty project on Dexter Avenue and Harrison Street.The project’s website lists 630,000 square feet of office space.

Apple was previously said to be eyeing Bellevue’s Center 425 building, but Amazon snagged the lease. Meanwhile, Apple is also expected to sublease space from Amazon in Seattle’s Rainier Square, but there’s significant demand for the tower.

Hydrogen Fuel Cells To Power eVTOL Aircraft

A U.S. startup is preparing to fly a full-scale, five-seat electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing (eVTOL) aircraft that is powered not by batteries or hybrid-electric propulsion, but by hydrogen fuel cells.The result is a vehicle the developers say can fly for 3 hr., up to 300 mi. between cities and not the short hops envisioned for urban air taxis.

FAA certification of the Skai has been underway for 10 months, says Brian Morrison, president and co-founder of Massachusetts-based Alaka’i Technologies. Founded in 2015, the startup is aiming for FAA Part 21.17b certification in 2020 and is funded through to production by a single investor, he says.

Designed for simplicity and low production cost, the Skai is a multicopter with six motors and propellers mounted on arms above the cabin. “There are no fans, no wing, no movable surfaces,” explains Morrison. “We have designed it for automotive-scale manufacturing.

The 4,000-lb.-gross-weight vehicle has three fuel cells producing a total of 450 hp using liquid hydrogen stored at 100 psi in a double-walled tank. “Only two fuel cells are required to maintain flight,” he says. The Skai can fly on five of the six motors and controllers and has a triplex autopilot for redundancy.

Alaka’i is using a new-generation fuel cell that is lighter than other automotive units, with greater power output. No batteries are required to handle transient loads, Morrison says, and the fuel cells provide peak power for flight control as well as sustained power for thrust.

“That’s a significant step up from lithium-ion batteries,” he says, adding that Alaka’i will provide a ground-mobile refueling capability initially, but is working with hydrogen producers to build a refueling infrastructure.

The startup selected fuel cells after studying and rejecting thousands of lithium-ion batteries, he says, citing an energy density for hydrogen of 147 MJ/kg versus 0.6 MJ/kg for batteries. “And we produce a clean vehicle that does not contribute to pollution,” Morrison notes. Hydrogen fuel cells emit only water vapor.
