Editor’s Corner “You look at things you enjoy in your life, but much more important is what you can do to make the world a better place.” Paul Allen Paul Gardner Allen (born January 21, 1953) was an American business magnate, investor and philanthropist. He co-founded Microsoft alongside Bill Gates in 1975. In August 2018, he was estimated to be the 46th-richest person in the world, with an estimated net worth of $20.2 billion. Paul was always looking for the next big idea and he never stopped exploring, investing, playing music, dreaming, and living his dreams with the sky as his limit. Paul Allen had big ideas and he shared his life as he promoted change that would positively impact the world. In 2014, he pledged $100 million to combat Ebola in West Africa. That same year, he founded the Allen Institute for Cell Science, which researches cells in order to understand their behavior in how to fight diseases. Allen has also taken interest in space-time travel and launched Vulcan Aerospace in 2015. Paul owned one of the largest yachts in the world (The 414 foot Octopus). Paul would lend out his yacht for exploration operations. Most notably, Octopus was used in the search for a missing American pilot and two officers whose plane disappeared off Palau and for the study of a rare fish called a coelacanth. The Octopus is a member of AMVER, a voluntary group ship reporting system used worldwide by authorities to arrange assistance for those in distress at sea. Paul owned a football team, the Seattle Sea Hawks and a basketball team, the Portland Trailblasers, he sailed the seas, he wrote a book, he supported the arts and sciences, and for a quiet, solitary man, he changed the lives of millions of people in many positive ways.

Renishaw, a leading manufacturer of advanced metal additive manufacturing (AM) systems, has opened a new Additive Manufacturing Demonstration Center in Newbury Park, California. Working in collaboration with Ibex Engineering, the Demonstration Center is situated within Ibex’s headquarters and allows visitors to explore, interact with and use Renishaw’s latest metal additive manufacturing systems. The center will be equipped to print high-precision titanium (Ti64Al4V) parts on Renishaw’s RenAM 500 series of laser-powder-bed-fusion AM systems. Ideal for industrial production applications, the RenAM 500 series allows for powder sieving and recirculation to be carried out automatically within the compact system, reducing the need for manual handling and exposure to materials. To provide a complete picture of the metal additive manufacturing process, the Center will also feature ancillary elements such as wet downdraft, heat treatment, support, machining and inspection technology, and part removal equipment. These components work in concert with the AM system to ensure parts are printed and finished to specifications. Also available at the site are InfiniAM Central software showcasing AM production reporting functionality and QuantAM build preparation software which allows visitors to work through the development of a AM machine build file, including material parameter development. Stephen Anderson (AM Business Development Manager, Renishaw USA) stated, “It’s fantastic to be able to place a metal additive manufacturing production cell within Ibex. Not only does it allow us to showcase our latest technologies, but partnering with Ibex provides us access to an expert manufacturer of precision staging equipment who will utilize the technology to develop innovative products, and drive metal AM into new markets and even wider adoption.”

What Dozens Of Oregon Manufacturers Told Schwabe About The State Of The Industry Workforce management, tax policy and technological impacts were some of the top issues mentioned by manufacturers responding to a survey commissioned by Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt and Aldrich Advisors. The two partnered to produce a State of Manufacturing in the Pacific Northwest report that was released recently. More than 100 manufacturing executives were surveyed on the challenges and opportunities facing their companies and on their outlook and priorities for the months ahead. A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST

Finding skilled workers remained a top concern. Three-quarters of respondents said that improving and expanding the workforce is the top priority in the coming year. Demand is there for skilled labor, but also administrative staff, sales managers and executive leadership. More than half of those surveyed said they were unprepared to deal with the challenge. That squares with what executives from manufacturers including Greenbrier Companies, Nautilus Inc. and DWFritz Automation said during a CEO roundtable hosted by the Business Journal in July. The six executives at the event agreed that a surging economy was making it difficult for their companies to keep up with demand. Even with the workforce challenge, eight in 10 respondents to the Schwabe survey were positive about the future of their organizations and manufacturers in Oregon and Washington had a favorable view of the business climate in their respective states. Automated technology was expected to have the greatest impact on the manufacturing industry in the next two years, according to the report, followed by advanced data analytics and autonomous vehicles. The survey was conducted by DHM Research. A majority of respondents serve in executive leadership positions. A range of industries was represented, but a majority of responses came from the food and beverage industry and metals and machinery manufacturers. Lockheed Martin Reduces F-35 Price In New Production Contract The U.S. Department of Defense and Lockheed Martin have finalized an $11.5 billion contract for the production and delivery of 141 F-35 aircraft at the lowest per aircraft price in the program’s history.
The cost of an F-35A was lowered for the 11th consecutive year. Unit price for the F-35A including aircraft, engine, and fee is $89.2 million. This represents a 5.4% reduction from the $94.3 million it cost for an F-35A in low-rate initial production lot 10 (LRIP 10). In LRIP 11, the F-35B unit cost was lowered to $115.5 million – a 5.7% reduction from the $122.4 million it cost for the short-takeoff and landing variant in LRIP 10. The F-35C unit cost was lowered to $107.7 million, an 11.1% reduction from the $121.2 million it cost for the carrier variant in LRIP 10.
The LRIP 11 agreement funds 91 aircraft for the U.S. services, 28 for F-35 international partners, and 22 for F-35 foreign military sales customers. Deliveries will begin in 2019. “Driving down cost is critical to the success of this program,” said Vice Admiral Mat Winter, F-35 Program Executive Officer. “We are delivering on our commitment to get the best price for taxpayers and warfighters. This agreement for the next lot of F-35s represents a fair deal for the U.S. government, our international partnership, and industry. We remain focused on aggressively reducing F-35 cost and delivering best value.” The latest contract is a demonstration of the program’s progress and maturity, as industry and the government now set their sights on future acquisition approaches for the next

three production lots to further reduce costs. This agreement marks a significant step forward for the F-35 program as we continue to increase production, reduce costs, and deliver transformational capabilities to our men and women in uniform,” said Greg Ulmer, F-35 vice president and general manager. “As production ramps up, and we implement additional cost savings initiatives, we are on track to reduce the cost of the F-35A to $80 million by 2020, which is equal to or less than legacy aircraft, while providing a major leap in capability.” More than 320 F-35 aircraft operate from 15 bases around the globe. More than 680 pilots and 6,200 maintainers have been trained, and the F-35 fleet has surpassed more than 155,000 cumulative flight hours. The F-35 is built by thousands of men and women in America and around the world. With more than 1,500 suppliers in 46 states and Puerto Rico, the F-35 program supports more than 194,000 direct and indirect jobs in the U.S. alone. Boeing Plays Catch-Up As 737 Deliveries Outpace Production Rate Boeing reported 61 deliveries of its 737 aircraft in September, again boosting its total after supplier delays slowed the output of its best-selling jet earlier in the year. According to new data from Boeing, that pushed its 737 delivery total to 407 through September. Deliveries of the 737 — currently being built at the rate of 52 per month — dropped to just 29 in July after delays that Boeing managers reportedly said threatened to stop the production line in Renton. Boeing said earlier in the year that those delays would impact deliveries in the third quarter, before picking up speed later in the year. The company delivered 48 of the single-aisle jets in August, which contributed to a third-quarter total of 138 deliveries for the 737. It set a 737 delivery record earlier in the year when it handed over 66 of jets in March. Across all of its commercial aircraft models, Boeing reported total deliveries of 568 planes through September, including 34 deliveries in the third quarter of its 787 Dreamliner. That year-to-date total kept it ahead of Airbus, which has also battled supplier delays and reported 503 total deliveries through the first three quarters of the year. Boeing also added 50 new orders to its books in September, to maintain a wide lead over Airbus in the annual sales race. Boeing ended the third quarter with 631 net orders, compared to 256 for Airbus. Source: Wichita Business Journal A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

Tesla got a quick start out of the gate in October, building roughly 7,400 Model 3 sedans in two weeks, electric vehicle news site Electrek reports, citing an unnamed source. If the company continues at this pace, it’ll produce more Model 3 sedans in three weeks than it did in its entire first quarter. Roughly 4,100 Model S and Model X cars rolled off the production line during the same time period, Electrek reports. If accurate, the latest production numbers would support CEO Elon Musk’s assertion earlier this year that the Model 3 had exited “production hell,” with the factory in Fremont being able to comfortably crank out 5,000 Model 3 sedans per week. Instead, Musk said, Tesla now faces “delivery logistics hell,” as the company tries to figure out a way to get the newly produced cars to customers as efficiently as possible. Demand for the Model 3 continues to outpace its supply. The company produced 53,239 Model 3 sedans in its most recent quarter, roughly 580 cars per day. That’s up dramatically from its production rate in early January, which stood at 26 Model 3 sedans per day. The automaker has registered more than 30,000 new Model 3 vehicle identification numbers with federal officials so far this month, according to one closely watched monitor. In the U.S., Tesla outsold 10 other major luxury automakers in its most recent quarter, notably Audi, Acura and Cadillac, according to Edmunds analyst Jeremy Acevedo. MercedesBenz outsold Tesla by 1,815 cars in the U.S. last quarter, or roughly 20 cars per day, Acevedo estimates

Fahey Machinery Company, Inc. Is Pleased To Introduce Dylan Hardy As The Newest Member Of Our Team Dylan, a native Californian moved to Oregon in 2011 and began his career in the metal fabrication industry as a Laser Operator. Dylan is the son of Dion Hardy, General Manager of Connor Manufacturing who was the influence for Dylan in the world of lasers as well as his greatest role model. As the first Fahey Machinery Company Laser Applications Technician, he will continue to develop his skills with a visit to Mazak this fall attending a course typically reserved for training factory Laser Service Engineers. This course will be added to the many other Mazak courses Dylan has already attended in his career. This position is a new direction for both Mazak Optonics and Fahey Machinery. Viewed as a “first responder” yet still a dealer employed service technician available to help train and assist operators on both current and newer machines. This new service, which we believe will improve service request
time by allowing us to help the client in providing a level of triage in determining if there is an actual need to escalate the request for a Mazak service engineer or if he is able to solve the issue at hand via site visit or over the phone. The end result is an increased level of client service and more up time. Having a solid background in production with Co2 and Fiber lasers including Mazak Smart System and Radan software, will allow Dylan to have productive conversations with owners and operators of Mazak Laser cutting systems. Dylan’s favorite quote is “10% of Life is what happens to you, and 90% of life is how you react to it.”We believe he is reacting quite well.

For Eugene’s Arcimoto, The EV Production ‘Starting Line’ Is In Sight
A year into its run as a public company, Electric vehicle maker Arcimoto says it’s on course to begin retail production of the three-wheeled Fun Utility Vehicle by the end of the year. And the head of the Eugene company doesn’t anticipate camping out at the factory, Elon Musk-style, in a rush to meet the goal. “My house is really close to the factory and I believe a good night’s sleep is very important,” founder Mark Frohnmayer deadpanned on Monday while heading up 6th Avenue in Manhattan in an FUV. He was in the Big Apple for promotional events. “The important point is that we’re not sprinting to get to a finish line here,” Frohnmayer added. “This a marathon, and the Retail Series is actually the starting line.” Arcimoto said it completed a 15-car Beta Series in the recently completed third quarter and was onto a 25-car Pilot Series, the final step before retail production.
GMA GARNET GROUP when your abrasive matters!
The Pilot Series is significant, Frohnmayer said, because the vehicles will be the first made with custom frame and chassis components made fully in-house, taking advantage of the company’s investments in factory automation. Arcimoto netted more than $18 million in a public offering that closed in September 2017. The company, founded in 2007, leased factory space in Eugene shortly thereafter.

their productivity. The employee group at Micro-Tronic, in excess of 150 today, is seeing immediate major improvements in real time communications between office staff and manufacturing divisions. From the founders to the current MicroTronics family members, a respect for loyal long-term employees prevails. In fact, the team asked that all employees with more than 25 years be recognized in this article. Today, nearly 10% of the company’s team has more than 1/4 of a century of longevity with the company. I had the pleasure to interview 10 of these employees; there were a few not available on the day of the interview. Team member MarkThomas grew up on a farm in the Northeast. He has 28.5 years of tenure, and believes that he would never have had the quality of life that he has enjoyed through employment at Micro-Tronics, had he worked for any other company. Production Supervisor Lisa Olivares says that Micro-Tronics continues to offer growth opportunities for those willing to work hard, and she enjoys the fact that with so many different parts and processes, the work is always challenging. She adds, “I practically grew up here; the management team offered me flexible hours when my children were very young, and then I moved back into full time employ when they were older. She adds, “They instilled in Generation 3 great values.”
MTI employee Mike Thompson at IMTS 2018 with MTI’s new DOOSAN LYNX 2100 LSYB Lance Jennings, Quality Lead, feels that MicroTronics has always offered opportunities for its employees to succeed. He says, “They sponsored the training I needed, and I am grateful for this.” Lance adds that the outstanding team he works with in his department makes work life at Micro-Tronics enjoyable and rewarding. DanWolff is beginning his 26th year with Micro-Tronics. As a young air force veteran looking for a job, Dan interviewed with Bob Marusiak, son of the founders. Then he met with John (founder). John asked him if Bob had offered him a job, and Dan said yes. John then asked, “What starting salary did he offer you?”When told the answer, John said, “I am giving you a raise of $1 per hour.” Dan says, “I knew that the people who hired me would be outstanding to work for, and to get a raise before I even started the job was amazing.” Pete Casarotto has 31 years of tenure with the company, and says what he likes most about working at Micro-Tronics is: the great team he works with, the benefits, and the family/owners. Song Vuong started with MTI 28 years ago.Though he didn’t expect that he would remain with a company for his entire career, he says that he values the integrity of the business owners, from founder John to his son Bob to Mark Travis. He adds, “They continue to invest in my training, and they treat their employees very well.” Don Freestone is a machinist by trade and worked for MTI for years in this capacity. When he started having health issues that meant he couldn’t work on his feet all day, Bob Marusiak asked how I would like to become a debur specialist, working from a sitting position. “They took care of me, and the profit sharing and other benefits are outstanding.”
Johnny and Charlie Marusiak with new BROTHER R650 X1 that will enable high speed machining and reduced 2nd ops DJ Saunders is a 32-year veteran of the company. “Micro-Tronics is a great company because the owners treat us like family. The profit sharing they started many years ago will allow me to retire - I value how much they care.” Eileen Brantley says that she has remained at the company for the past 31 years at a rubber trim operator because of her love of the Marusiak family. “If you put in the time and work hard, there isn’t another company that will take care of you like the team at Micro-Tronics does. I think the management team has great values - they have integrity.” Peter Brown says, “Work at MicroTronics has been consistent. I wanted security and they gave me this. The management team has integrity - they treat their employees well.” The ownership and management of MTI is committed to our Core Values: Innovation, Performance: (Quality and Excellence), Adaptability, Positive Company Culture, Loyalty, Honesty and Respect. Everett Community College Works To Ease Aerospace Talent Shortage Rob Prosch and Everett Community College are working to alleviate a “gathering storm” that’s about to wallop aerospace manufacturing and the aviation maintenance and repair worlds. The crisis stems from a global shortage of aircraft maintenance mechanics and avionics technicians. ECC has launched and expanded two programs that will train graduates to fill jobs that are growing in number but getting more challenging for aerospace manufacturers and airlines to fill. Right now, demand for airplane mechanics and avionics technicians is strong and pay for those in the A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

Aeronautical Repair Station Association Vice President Brett Levanto told Congress recently the maintenance technician shortage is hurting the aerospace sector, small aviation companies and the entire U.S. economy. “Recruiting and retaining the next generation of aviation professionals is the most pressing strategic challenge facing the aviation maintenance community,” Levanto said. “For aviation businesses – large and small – the development, production, operation and maintenance of the world’s safest transportation system depends on a skilled, dedicated and knowledgeable workforce that is personally invested for the long term.” A Boeing 2018 aircraft technician outlook forecast that North American airlines will need 189,000 new technicians to keep pace with passenger jet fleet growth over the next 20 years. Factor in work performed on smaller civil aircraft — not only for passenger airline service — and that number grows. Prosch and ECC are working hard to help the industry stave off the crisis, enrolling 125 aircraft mechanics a year in a two-year program. In avionics, it’s aiming to attract another 40 students per year, Prosch said. Students in the programs learn the trade in classrooms and shops, working on real aircraft wings, fuselages, real engines and other parts and on avionics equipment, all at the college’s special facilities at Paine Field. Boeing saw the storm coming a few years ago.The jet maker approached Everett about introducing an avionics program, which is
an expensive beast — about $500,000 to launch -— because electronics are costly. Boeing provided textbooks and lent equipment to ECC for the program.“They recognized the need and stepped up. Boeing’s been very generous,” Prosch said. Dynon, a local avionics company owned by Seattle entrepreneur John Torode, also gave $50,000 in donations. ECC trustees also approved $300,000 in spending and Prosch’s group won a workforce grant to round out the avionics program’s total funding.

Students in the avionics and aviation maintenance technology programs are not only tracked closely by Boeing — and can be considered for jobs at the giant jet maker’s factories even before they graduate — but AviationTechnical Services and Alaska Airlines - two other major Puget Sound region aviation players - are also companies keen to hire its graduates. Graduates of both maintenance and avionics programs have no shortage of opportunities upon graduation. Many get job and internship offers while they’re in school — and the job board at the college’s aviation facility overflows with job ads and internships. “We have a 99 percent job placement rate,” Prosch said. “If a student wants a job, he has a job.” By Andrew McIntosh – Puget Sound Business Journal

With its twin F404 engines, the Hornet became the backbone of the U.S. Navy’s fleet of fighter planes through the 1980s and 1990s. “If you looked out on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier during those years, you’d see mainly Hornets,” says Tom Lodge, head of marketing for GE Aviation’s military engines business. “I would say the Hornet is more of a Corvette than a pickup truck,” he adds. “It’s high-end, but not expensive. Versatility and low cost were key words here. The F404 is a medium-size engine —11,000 pounds of thrust, 17,000 with afterburner. But it’s also relatively light, which makes it suitable for agile fighters, and designed to be easily maintained. Its six modules — fan, compressor, combustor, high-pressure turbine, low-pressure turbine and afterburner — were made to fit together like Legos. This design is convenient especially on an aircraft carrier, allowing engineers to quickly swap out a module for a spare. “You could pull the engine apart, mix and match, and get flying right away,” says Lodge. by Fred Guterl A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

Boeing-Backed Electric Airplane Maker Zunum Aero Signs Engine Deal With Safran Helicopters Hybrid electric airplane maker Zunum Aero of Bothell has unveiled a long-term strategic alliance with French aerospace giant Safran that will help bring its hybridelectric regional airplane to market in the early 2020s.
Knapp said he could not discuss whether Safran will become an investor in Zunum, joining venture capital arms of Boeing HorizonX and JetBlue Airways Ventures. The French and American companies negotiated the alliance for nine months before signing their deal, Knapp said. He added that Safran’s helicopter engine repair facility inTexas convinced Zunum’s executives and backers that they are serious and committed to the U.S. and North American market, a key focus of Zunum’s efforts going forward. Safran contacted Zunum to express interest in being the engine supplier for the 12-seater airplane, which will have a 700-mile range. Zunum says the operating costs will be a fraction of those of rival regional jets or turboprops. The Zunum aircraft under development will be powered by dual power sources: propulsion batteries, and Safran’s turboshaft engine, which the companies said will have between 1,700 to 2,000 shaft horsepower. Safran calls it the Ardiden 3Z, a variant of two of its earlier helicopter engines. Zunum is aiming to flight test its first aircraft and engine in 2019. It plans to deliver its first airplane in 2020. The company has already ground tested systems for its version of the aircraft using a Rockwell Turbo Commander 840 airplane at an unidentified airport near Chicago.
Safran Helicopter Engines will provide the new engine turbine that will drive the generator in Zunum Aero’s first electric airplane, known as the ZA10, the companies announced.
Safran Helicopter Engines, based in Bordes, France, is a leading manufacturer. It has produced more than 72,000 helicopter engines for more than 2,500 customers.
“This is a major vendor and what we have here is a very long-term production agreement,” said Matt Knapp, Zunum’s co-founder and chief technology officer. “Part of the attraction of working with Safran is they really believe in the attraction of this market and they are keen to work with us to meet our operating requirements.”

OIL MIST AND SMOKE IN YOUR SHOP?
SunPower CEO On What’s Next For The Solarworld Plant In Hillsboro Two days after it closed its acquisition of SolarWorld, SunPower’s Tom Werner was in Hillsboro. We caught up with the California-based company’s CEO and chairman for a quick update on what he sees unfolding in Hillsboro in the coming months and years.
Low-Cost, Highly Efficient Mist and Smoke Collectors Designed Specifically for the Metalworking Industry
The closing took more than five months, longer than anticipated. Was that because it hinged on SunPower getting a tariff exemption from the Trump administration on a high-efficiency product you make overseas? Yes. We would not have completed this transaction without exemption because SunPower was in no position to pay tariffs and fund this operation. In addition, the assessment of SolarWorld Americas took longer than planned because the market conditions were changing.
www.mistcollectors.com 1-800-645-4174
SunPower said Hillsboro will make SolarWorld products in the short-term and SunPower P-Series modules beginning in 2019. Does that mean the SolarWorld brand will disappear? Likely. In the solar industry things change rapidly, so I would say that’s the most likely plan. We’re investing as we speak. During the month of October we expect new capital equipment to be arriving and we expect to be making new technology modules at the beginning of next year. The cells for the P-Series that will be the focus, where will they be made? They could be made here because they make the cell that works in the P-Series module, and they can still be sourced from a number of other suppliers. SolarWorld had a unique technology several years ago but competition has been catching up, so there will be some externally sourced.

Given that and all the factors, what do you anticipate as far as the number of employees at the plant when it hits its stride? SunPower is starting with a number between 200 and 250. We would expect in a year that we’ll be at least that level and most likely higher. Between now and a year, think of two phases, phase one to implement the technology that we’re shipping in during the month of October. Phase two is being determined. Depending on the option we choose we’ll likely expand module production further, but the timing is uncertain. So in a year we’ll have more people, but during that year it may ebb and flow a little bit. SolarWorld had cell production capacity of 430 megawatts and module capacity of 550 megawatts. Where will levels go under SunPower? To get back to the full module capacity in a year, year and half, is quite possible or even likely. The cell side is indeterminate. There hasn’t been an investment in the cell manufacturing here in quite a while, so to complete it would require new investment. We would be working on sources of funding to improve the cell operation and if we can’t get those sources then we’ll have to decide what we’re going to do. The SolarWorld acquisition price was immaterial to SunPower’s earnings, and you’ve talked about investing $10 million to $15 million. That’s real money, but still fairly modest for a company with revenue in the neighborhood of $2 billion. Is SunPower looking to get a few years of tariffprotected production out of the facility or are you investing in it with a mind and expectation to compete without tariff protection? What I said last time, a version of this, is what I’d say now:We’re in this to win. This isn’t a treading water strategy. We will spend tens of millions of dollars. Probably in the low-digit tens of millions, but we will spend that over the next 18
months. You don’t do that unless you intend on it working. So we’re here to make this work. Source: Portland Business Journal
‘They’re Going To Change The Game:’ Boeing Calls Supplier Meeting To Reveal New Terms For All Future Interiors Work
With over a million standard tools, we’ve got the “ings” covered.
Boeing Commercial Airplanes is set to convene a supplier conference this month to discuss new contract terms for companies that want to bid on jet interior deals. The Oct. 30 suppliers/bidders conference at Lynnwood Convention Center has unnerved and angered Puget Sound-area aerospace suppliers, according to five industry sources who asked not to be named to avoid harming business relationships. Suppliers are upset because Boeing is proposing to rewrite its supply chain agreement, a kind of master agreement with interior parts and components suppliers. Boeing has asked all attendees to keep confidential anything discussed at the event, documents show. A copy of Boeing’s invitation obtained by the Puget Sound Business Journal says BCA “is looking to streamline its bidding process to increase supply chain efficiencies for all future work, all programs.”

“To that end we are looking at doing business differently which includes a new set of terms and conditions with the product life cycle and production system focus,” the invite continues. “Our suppliers are critical to our success and the intent of this conference is to share our request for proposal (RFP) and terms and conditions expectations for new work along with Q and A dialogue.” Boeing declined to comment. The move comes as it considers whether to proceed with its New Mid-market Airplane (NMA), also known as the 797. New terms could hurt the hundreds of companies that supply thousands of parts for Boeing jetliner interiors, including 737s, 787 Dreamliners and 777s. Boeing is suggesting that if suppliers want to bid for new business, they will have to accept new terms and conditions that are far more generous to Boeing and come at suppliers’ expense, one supplier executive said. “If we signed up for this, we wouldn’t survive,” this source said. “They’re going to change the game. It’s stressful and they’re not making it easy. We’ve heard people say ‘No way, we won’t sign it.’ But they’re big (suppliers) and they have deep pockets.” An executive with a second supplier said Boeing’s push comes as it tries to boost its airplane division profits, which account for more than half of Boeing’s total profit. Boeing’s margins have in the past been low while its suppliers’ margins were in the double digits. The jet maker is aggressively trying to reverse that trend under CEO Dennis Muilenburg. “We know that Boeing and also Airbus are trying to take back a bigger part of the profits from their suppliers,” that second executive said. Xometry: Meet The Matchmaking Masterminds Of Manufacturing
by Amy Kover
Manufacturing is a notoriously finicky business. But smaller machine shops dependent on a handful of local customers in a single industry are particularly vulnerable to the whims of economic downturns. Since finding new work can be costly and time-consuming, some have been hoping for an Uber-like service for manufacturing. The Maryland-based company Xometry recently developed that very model. Its software engineers have created a platform that connects businesses with a network of 2,500 manufacturers. Now a machine shop like Billet Studio — a specialist in computer numerical controlled machining located in Austin, Texas — can grow its customer base by logging onto Xometry’s website and submitting bids for new projects. “Xometry functions as our sales-and-marketing arm, making it easy for us to take on work without the cost and hassle of quoting jobs,” says co-owner Nick Aydelotte. For companies on the other side of t h e e q u at i o n — there are 10,000 members seeking manufacturing capacity — instant access to thousands of producers can be a lifesaver. In 2016 Ryan Lambert, an engineer who makes equipment for BMW’s production lines in South Carolina, was struggling to find a supplier that could combine 3D printing with other traditional manufacturing techniques. He went to Xometry, uploaded his 3D CAD files and instantly received a list of quotes, delivery dates and full analysis of what type of manufacturing works best. “I use Xometry because it offers all the major manufacturing processes within one interface and takes care of fulfillment, so I don’t need to juggle suppliers,” Lambert says. X o m e t r y ’s network includes ma nufa ct urer s with 13 different capabilities, including injection molding, CNC machining and additive manufactur ing. A c c e s s i bl e v i a website or as an add-in to design software like Solidworks, the platform runs each project request through a series of algorithms to find the perfect match. “If a supplier is really strong at working with aluminum, we don’t want to waste his time bidding on a job with steel,” explains Xometry CEO Randy Altschuler. “Our platform doesn’t only ensure that manufacturers get work, but that they get the right work.”The right
work sometimes comes from a completely new industry, he says, thus unlocking the door to a new line of business — and revenue — for a manufacturer.
tools, materials and supplies through the website, as well as additional professional services, such as equipment financing and technological training, through the Shop Advantage Program, launched in September.
It’s like Uber for manufacturing: Engineers in need of parts can go to Xometry, upload a CAD file and immediately start getting quotes and delivery dates.
With thousands of customers like BMW, NASA and GE— hailing from industries as varied as aerospace and consumer products — Xometry is poised to keep growing. Last year, the company doubled its annual revenue to roughly $40 million.
To get into Xometry’s network, manufacturers must fulfill certain criteria, including professional certifications. They must also make their work available to inspection by Xometry’s team of quality engineers. New members cut their teeth on smaller orders. If they perform well on Xometry’s scorecard, which measures timeliness and quality, the platform’s algorithm will ramp up its matching formula, throwing out increasingly complex projects. According to Altschuler, strong suppliers could potentially graduate to projects worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Manufacturers can further bolster their businesses by purchasing new
In the two years since BMW placed its first order with Xometry, the company has become an investor. In fact, in June, Xometry received money from the German carmaker, as well as GE Ventures, in a $25 million round of funding led by venture capitalists Foundry Group. Better yet, more than a dozen small manufacturers are now making parts for BMW. All of which lends credence to Xometry’s guiding principle: Plenty of potential suitors await U.S. manufacturers. It’s just a matter of finding the right match. A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

The Devil Is In The Details: How GE Found A Way To Bring 3D Printing To Mass Production
Making Precision Machined Parts Since 1974
by Tomas Kellner
3D printing has rightfully gotten a lot of buzz because of the marvels it can do. Also known as additive manufacturing, it has opened new paths for designers to create custom shapes that were previously too expensive or downright impossible to make. The technology’s potential is enormous, but GE engineer Peter Martinello offers a dose of perspective. “This is true if you have to print just one part,” he says. “But as soon as you have to print thousands of copies of the same part consistently, you are in a territory that’s both similar to traditional manufacturing, but also more complex than anything that we’ve had before.”
Howard Precision Machined Products Davenport and CNC Machines Prototype to Production Up to 3.00” Diameters
Martinello knows this as well as anyone. As a senior engineer for additive design at GE Aviation’s Additive Technology Center (ATC) in Cincinnati, in 2016 he helped bring to mass production a 3D-printed fuel nozzle that efficiently sprays fuel inside the LEAP jet engine. The size of a walnut, this wickedly complex metal part was previously made from 20 components. GE now prints 600 of them per week as a single piece.

www.howardpmp.com
But Martinello and his colleagues have just taken that feat to a new level. Over the last 10 months, they’ve developed a new process to mass-print a much larger part for a version of the GEnx jet engine that powers the latest generation of Boeing 747s.To do so, the team also had to “productionproof ” the new line of printers for the part.
(software for the rest of us)
This is the first time GE has designed a mass-production process for a line of its own printers made by Concept Laser, a German engineering company it acquired in 2016. “Minor tweaks here and there are OK in the development phase, but when you get into production, everything has to be locked down,” says Danny Brandel, a lead manufacturing engineer at the ATC and a member of the team. He says this is especially important in aviation because of tight FAA regulations due to the importance of safety and quality in air travel.

GE Aviation plans to begin mass-producing the GEnx parts this month at its factory in Auburn,Alabama. “The reason we did this project was because it represented several firsts for us,” says Eric Gatlin, a general manager for GE Aviation’s additive integrated product team. “It’s our first program we certified on a Concept Laser machine, and it’s also the first project we’ve taken from design to production in less than 10 months.”
Rio Fasteners Certifies To ISO 9001:2015 With The Help of BMSC! Rio Fasteners will celebrate 18 months in business this month! Though the Los Angeles based Minority-owned fastener business is very young, Owner Oscar Rivera has nearly 4 decades of experience in the manufacturing industry with more than 3 decades in the fastener industry. And though the company isn’t yet 2 years old, it is already ISO 9001: 2015 certified! Oscar’s story is an American success story that is inspiring to anyone who wants to someday achieve business ownership. Hard work, ambition, and a strong sense of customer service can indeed pay off. Oscar came to the United States 40 years ago, in 1978. He was a young man, just 20 at the time, and his country of El Salvador was unstable politically. Oscar’s mother had the foresight to get Oscar out of the country shortly before El Salvador’s civil war officially began in 1980. Oscar says, “When I first arrived in the United States, I landed in Montana. The language barriers for a person who didn’t speak much English made finding a job in Montana very difficult.” Oscar was a young ambitious man, and he utilizedTV, books, and magazines to continue to improve his English. Just 6 months after arriving in the US, he moved to Los Angeles where job opportunities might be better, and he quickly found work. When a cousin helped him to find employment with Informer, it was Oscar’s entrée into what would become his career in manufacturing. Over the next 6 years, Oscar’s English continued to improve, and with his strong work ethic, he moved from assembly to stocking to shipping and receiving, to purchasing, to inventory controls. Oscar left his employer when another company acquired it. Oscar says, “Informer enabled me to learn many different aspects of manufacturing, and in purchasing, I developed relationships with many people in the industry. When I made the decision to leave my employer once it was acquired, it was one of my supplier/customers who offered me a position with his company, Samson Fasteners. Oscar spent the next 19 years with Samson Fasteners (which later became TR Fastenings-Samson Industries).Through the course of his tenure at the company, Oscar worked in positions in shipping, warehousing, customer service, outside processing and purchasing. When Oscar’s boss gave him responsibility for supporting their customers Vendor Managed Inventory requirements (VMI), Oscar’s career with his employer took off. With his Spanish speaking ability, Oscar was promoted to ‘Outside Sales and Inventory Control Specialist’, and he was chartered with supporting Samson Fasteners customers throughout Mexico. In 1998, Oscar’s boss sold Samson Fasteners to a British company, called TR and the company is now calledTR Fastenings – Samson Industries. With the change in ownership, Oscar was promoted to General Manager for the company’sTijuana, Mexico operations. Oscar remained with his employer for 6 years, based in Mexico. A2Z MANUFACTURING SW •

Oscar says, “I dreamed of opening my own business, and I wanted to return to the US. I called my old boss who had sold Samson Fasteners years ago, and asked his advice on how to start my own fastener company.” He continued, “My old boss convinced me to come to his new company, called Jenson Fasteners.” Oscar accepted the offer and he stayed with Jenson Fasteners until his boss retired (2017). “Now it was time to follow my dream of business ownership”, Oscar said. “My new company was called Rio Fasteners, so named because of my name Rivera (Ri) and Oscar (o); hence Rio.” Rio Fasteners supports customers in Mexico and in the United States, with 80% coming from Mexico. Oscar has several principles within which his business operates: • Grow slowly so that you can continue to offer outstanding customer service. • Be diversified in your customers. Try to always apply the ‘10%’ rule, meaning retain customers who comprise ~10% of your business • Big companies are just as important to the business as are small companies • Continue to visit your customers. Face to face visits help cement relationships. • Put quality processes in place right from the start. Oscar says, “You tell your kids to always put the keys on the hanging key holder. Do it every time, and you will never be looking for your keys. This is what ISO certification is all about. Do it right from the start.” 7 months into business ownership, Oscar had contracted with Bretta Kelly, owner of BMSC, to begin ISO certification. Oscar says, “I knew the owners of RC Fasteners from working together at Samson. I contacted them about ISO certification and they highly recommended BMSC.” He added, “I additionally talked to one of my processing suppliers in Los Angeles and they also gave me some recommended consultants.” In the end, Oscar selected BMSC for the company’s ISO consultant. Oscar says, “I just felt very comfortable with Bretta’s style from the start.” About his experience in the months ensuing where he worked with Bretta and her colleague Debbie Hart, Oscar says, “Bretta and Debbie were outstanding. They gave me confidence from the start that they would help me to successfully achieve certification and I felt that they would be honest with me if I needed to improve or revise a process. My experience with BMSC was absolutely wonderful!” Rio Fasteners successfully certified to ISO 9001:2015 on September 18th. Oscar says, “We are ready to expand our business with customers who require ISO certification and our certification will just be another step in continuous improvement for our current customers.” Contact Rio Fasteners, a young, highly-experienced, Spanish-speaking ISO certified entity, at 323-920-4682 or email: orivera@riofasteners.com BMSC offers consulting services as well as proven, copy written templates for ISO 9001:2015,AS9100D,AS9110C and AS9120B Standards. ‘They’re Going To Change The Game:’ Boeing Calls Supplier Meeting To Reveal New Terms For All Future Interiors Work By Andrew McIntosh – StaffWriter, Puget Sound Business Journal B o e i n g Commercial Airplanes is set to convene a supplier conference this month to discuss new contract terms for companies that want to bid on jet interior deals.

We’ve heard people say ‘No way, we won’t sign it.’ But they’re big (suppliers) and they have deep pockets.”
An executive with a second supplier said Boeing’s push comes as it tries to boost its airplane division profits, which account for more than half of Boeing’s total profit. “They are more and more demanding.”

There will be a bigger battle when Boeing attempts to impose new conditions on components made for existing programs, the executive said: “That’s not what was expected when suppliers invested a lot money up front and signed contracts years ago to make these components.”

PacStar has built its business working with the Department of Defense. Last year, it secured a $50 million contract with the Marine Corps. In addition to the military work, the company is also expanding into industrial markets. That growth has led to hiring and expanding the company’s manufacturing facility. The company employs 70-plus workers. “We expanded our manufacturing facility last spring and we expect to double staff over the next few years as orders and PacStar proprietary revenue grows,” said CEO Peggy Miller in an email. “We expect that our suppliers — many are in Oregon — will also be adding space and staff to support PacStar’s growth.” By Malia Spencer – Portland Business Journal
