Editor’s Corner Knowledge comes, but wisdom lingers. It may not be difficult to store up in the mind a vast quantity of facts within a comparatively short time, but the ability to form judgments requires the severe discipline of hard work and the tempering heat of experience and maturity.

Calvin Coolidge Education; There are a few different Latin roots of the English word “education.” They are “educare,” which means to train or to mold, and “educere,” means to lead out.The Latin word, “educo,” meaning to educe, to draw out, to develop from within.

An educated person is not necessarily one who has an abundance of general or specialized knowledge. An educated person is one who has developed the faculties of his mind and puts it to good use. As knowledge is acquired it must be organized and put into use, for a definite purpose, through practical plans. Knowledge has no value except that which can be gained from its application toward some worthy end. This is one reason why college degrees are not valued more highly.They represent nothing but miscellaneous knowledge without practical experience.

Many successful people, in all walks of life, never stop acquiring specialized knowledge related to their major purpose, business, or profession. Those who are not successful usually make the mistake of believing that the knowledge-acquiring period ends when one finishes school. The truth is that schooling does but little more than to put us in the way of learning how to acquire practical knowledge.

Thomas A. Edison had only three months of “schooling” during his entire life. He was taught reading, writing, and arithmetic by his mother, but was always a very curious child and taught himself much by reading on his own. Edison did not leave this world poor.

Henry Ford had less than sixth grade schooling, but he managed to do pretty well financially. From the time he was a young boy, Ford enjoyed tinkering with machines.

Farm work and a job in a Detroit machine shop afforded him ample opportunities to experiment and expand his knowledge. Through the years he honed his skills and his passion for what he put his hands and mind to.

We are in an information age, and it is up to us to follow the correct data, use this information and train ourselves to walk in a way that others can benefit and learn from. Tinkering with good knowledge can lead to an evolution of a life of practical hands on wisdom. This is called experience in many walks of life and can be second nature to people that have lived it to a near perfection level. We all have our talents, we all have the fingerprint that makes us unique, and we all have the ability to follow a passion we so choose.

In closing I challenge you all to tinker, to acquire knowledge, to temper yourselves into wisdom and to prosper in a life that is an utter pleasure to hold.

Boeing and JetBlue Are Funding This Startup’s Electric Aircraft

ATS Receives Boeing Performance Excellence Award for Seventh Consecutive Year AviationTechnical Services (ATS) announced that it has received a 2016 Silver Boeing Performance Excellence Award. The Boeing Company issues the award annually to recognize suppliers who have achieved superior performance. This is the seventh consecutive year that ATS has received the Gold or Silver Performance Award. ATS maintained a Silver or better composite performance rating for each month of the 12-month performance period.

This year, Boeing recognized 480 suppliers out of over 21,000 Boeing partners and suppliers who achieved either a Gold or Silver level Boeing Performance Excellence Award.

ATS provides component MRO services, on site support and machining services to Boeing for its commercial aircraft fleet (including the B787) and military derivatives, and is proud to be recognized as a supplier with high performance standards.

L.A. Company Gets Licensing Deal For Kenmore Grills Sears has reached a licensing agreement with Pomona, California-based Permasteel that will allow the sale of Kenmore grills in stores other than Sears and Kmart.

The Chicago Tribune reported last month that the Hoffman Estates, Illinois-based retailer has made a deal giving Permasteel permission to manufacture Kenmore and Kenmore Elite gas grills, grill covers, and accessories for distribution at retailers across the country.

Sears Holdings made a licensing deal that gives California grill-maker Permasteel permission to manufacture and distribute Kenmore brand grills to retailers nationwide.

Earlier this month, Sears said it would explore sales or licensing options for its Kenmore appliance and DieHard battery brands as a part of a larger restructuring program.

That announcement came on the heels of the company’s January sale of Craftsman tools to Stanley Black & Decker, a deal valued at $900 million over 15 years.

Sears’ Chief Marketing Officer Peter Boutros said in a news release that the Kenmore agreement is the “first example of our expansion strategy to unleash the power of the Kenmore and DieHard brands globally.”

Most Kenmore products sold domestically are only available Sears stores, the Tribune reported.

Aerospace and automotive parts supplier Arconic had a big 2016, but don’t feel bad if you’ve never heard of it.

Arconic is an old company with a new name and a big new deal. Airbus picked the New York-based company to supply metal 3D-printed parts, its first agreement to make printed parts for commercial jets.

THAAD is designed to shoot down short-, medium-, and intermediate-

range ballistic missiles in their terminal phase using a hit-to-kill kinetic warhead.The missile relies on the kinetic energy of the impact to destroy the incoming missile.

The system is a key element of the U.S. ballistic missile defense system to defend the continental United States, its deployed forces, friends, and allies against ballistic missiles of all ranges and in all phases of flight.

THAAD consists of five major components: launchers, interceptors, a radar, THAAD fire control and communications (TFCC) units, and THAAD-specific support equipment.

Lockheed Martin started developing the THAAD system in 1992, and first tested the system three years later. The first THAAD tests that hit their targets were in 1999, after the first six tests missed. THAAD missiles, which have a maximum range of about 125 miles, are expected to hit incoming ballistic missile warheads as high as 93 miles above the Earth’s surface.

School’s In: GE’s New “Brilliant Learning” Program Will Train Workers For Jobs Of The Future

by Tomas Kellner Jesse Schrimpf didn’t study additive manufacturing in school. But when a 3D printer showed up at his plant inWaukesha,Wisconsin, the GE Healthcare engineer decided to give the machine a whirl. One of the company’s European factories was seeking to improve a production line, and Schrimpf came up with a clever design for a tray that enabled workers to quickly fill it with product — small vials filled contrast medium for medical imaging — and then use a collaborative robot, or cobot, to move it around.

Production redesigns tend to be expensive affairs. In this case, the trays — there were thousands of them in the factory — were made by injection molding. Normally, Schrimpf would design a new master mold, order a wooden mold prototype costing as much as $20,000 from a supplier

and wait as long as four weeks for the delivery. He would test it, make tweaks and repeat the process. The costs quickly added up.

But with the 3D printer at his disposal, he could print a mold that performed better than the wooden kind in just two days on-site and for $1,000. The printer, which creates 3D objects directly from a computer file, enabled him to incorporate changes into the next design version with his keyboard and a mouse. “These trays are just an enabler for a bigger automation project,” says Schrimpf’s boss, Jimmie Beacham. “It will help the workers focus on tasks where they can add more value and save the factory significant money.”

Schrimpf is in many ways the poster child for GE’s new “brilliant learning” program the company is launching for employees around the world this week. It includes “massive open online courses” in several languages, workshops, “immersion boot camps on lean manufacturing” and other training designed to help employees get ready for the arrival in the factory of 3D printing, big data, robotics, digital and lean manufacturing and other advanced technologies. “Today, manufacturing is driven by productivity — and when combined with the merging of hardware and software, the need for a highly skilled labor force is becoming integral to the success and modernization of our industry,” says Philippe Cochet, GE’s chief productivity officer. He said that “at a time when the creation and retention of U.S. jobs in America’s manufacturing cities is more important than ever,” the brilliant learning program could help secure these jobs and “become a model for the industry.”

Custom paint jobs for military aircraft around the world are enjoying a comeback as military leaders realize they help build morale and lift spirits among the rank and file, Boeing says.

Wartime was once the primary push for bringing out combat aircraft paint sprayers, Boeing historian Michael Lombardi said in a feature about the “air spray” trend on the Boeing Defense website.

WWII painters used to depict sultry pin-up girls on aircraft for lonely soldiers to eyeball or ferocious predators to intimidate enemies. These days, aircraft program milestones and messages of honor are behind many of the flashy paint jobs, Lombardi said.

Have A Heart: New Software Could 3D Print Organ Replicas On Demand

by Tomas Kellner Erica Endicott was pregnant with her son, Kaden, when cardiologists at Phoenix Children’s Heart Center discovered that the left side of the boy’s heart was not growing properly. Kaden, who is healthy now, was treated by a team of doctors in Boston for the life-threatening condition. Following the procedure, they used data from an ultrasound system to create and print 3D models of Kaden’s heart before and after his surgery.

“As a parent, it was incredible to get an actual, tangible model of our son’s heart,” Erica told GE Reports.

Erica’s experience with 3D models of organs remains rare, but if Jimmie Beacham, chief engineer for advanced manufacturing at GE Healthcare, has his way, it won’t be for long. Beacham, 43, and his team at the company’s futuristic laboratory in Waukesha, Wisconsin, are looking for ways to quickly and efficiently translate image files from computed tomography (CT) scanners and other imaging machines so they can be printed. “Today, when people print organs, it can take anywhere from a week to three weeks to manipulate the data,” Beacham says. “We want to do it with a click of a button.”

It’s not an easy task. A CT scanner like GE’s Revolution CT generates and transmits in 1 second an amount of data equivalent to 6,000 Netflix movies. “Right now, we convert all that data into an image on the screen,” Beacham says. “I’m pushing our teams across GE Healthcare to look at how we can create a software package that turns that image into a printable file that can be sent to a 3D printer. We’ve already printed several organs like the liver and the lung. It’s valuable learning.”

GE recently launched GE Additive, a business unit that’s developing machines for 3D-printing and other additive manufacturing methods. As a next step, Beacham’s team is collaborating with GE Additive to explore whether “a custom machine that prints organs from the files that we derive from our software” makes sense. Given the industry’s advancements, Beacham says, speed is of the essence. “If we don’t figure it out, someone else will,” he says.

Beacham believes that both doctors and patients will benefit from the technology. “All humans are built a little bit differently,” he says. “When a surgeon has to go in and do a procedure, they are sometimes surprised by what they find.”

Beacham says that anatomical replicas of organs would provide the surgeon with more information upfront. “Surgeons sometimes have to repeatedly go to a workstation, look at the image on the screen and try to figure out what’s going on,” he says. “It slows the surgery down and increases the odds of introducing infection or slowing the patient’s recovery time.”

He says that radiologists also have been asking for 3D-printed models of organs because they improve the dialogue with patients. “You can show the patient the body part that has the problem,” he says. “When they hold it in their hands and see it clearly, rather than look at a grayscale 2D image on-screen, they can quickly grasp what needs to be fixed.”

He compares the experience to visiting a car repair shop. “If you are not a gearhead and don’t know a lot about cars and the mechanic comes out and tell you that you need a new transmission, you are not going to know if that’s true or not,” he says. “The first thing you think is ‘Do I trust him?’

The Robots Are Hiring: San Jose Startup Raises $3M, Partners With IBM Watson AI Messaging startup TextRecruit raised $3 million in funding to connect employers with job candidates with the help of IBM Watson AI technology.

This marks the company’s first public backing. It will use the funds to expand into artificial intelligence and chatbots in a partnership with IBM Watson.

SignalFire led the Series A round. Other backers included Julia Popowitz, former deputy general counsel at Facebook; Sarah Imbach, former chief risk officer at LinkedIn; for mer Google engineer Steven Baker; former Heidrick & Struggles CEO Tom Friel; and Ben Davenport, founder of Beluga (which became Facebook Messenger).

“TextRecruit now has the highest volume of 160-character conversations about job opportunities in the world,” CEO Erik Kostelnik told the Silicon Valley Business Journal. “We have this massive data set on how people communicate via text message on our platform. Instead of building AI ourselves, we decided to use the smartest computer out there, Watson, and build an AI assistant for all of our customers.”

Kostelnik bootstrapped the San Jose-based startup with Chief Technology Officer Jed Danner in 2014 to create intelligent text messaging and chat tools that help employers attract talent, recruit candidates and engage employees.

“The idea came from VMware” Kostelnick said. “I was having a conversation with their team, they said all their recruiters were texting and they had no idea where the texts were going. There was no centralized platform to help them manage that communication.”

TextRecruit was able to pre-sell their concept to VMware, Cracker Barrel, Conway Trucking, U.K.-based retailer Next and CenturyLink.

The team sold about $1 million in product prior to having the solution.

Now, more than 200 companies use TextRecruit, including VMware, Kindred Healthcare, Sodexo,Waste Management and the U.S. Marine Corps. Last year, TextRecruit helped employers send text messages to more than 5 million job candidates.

The company will also use the new funds to accelerate growth, enhance its suite of intelligent messaging solutions and expand into global markets. TextRecruit has 19 staffers and hopes to have 50 by the end of the year.

Davis explained, “We work hard to create a quality product but give appreciation to everyone involved in our success while having fun.” Engagement at all organizational levels, including millennials, is key to Romac employee retention, he said.

The impending retirement of baby boomers coupled with demand for STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) skills demonstrate the importance of millennials to local manufacturers’ success.

Boeing Partnership With Texas Firm Could Triple Number Of Satellites Deployed From Space Station Boeing and Texasbased NanoRacks LLC have joined forces to develop the first privately funded commercial space airlock device for outer space.

The companies hope their new module will enable the United States to potentially triple the number of small satellites deployed from the International Space Station (ISS) during a single airlock cycle.

The companies’ deal to develop a new, larger airlock module for the International Space Station (seen here) marks the start of a new chapter in the space station program where the private sector is taking on more responsibilities, NanoRocks CEO Jeffrey Manber says.

The NanoRacks Airlock module, which the companies are hoping will be attached to the U.S. segment of the space station in 2019, will increase the station’s capability of transferring equipment, payloads and deployable satellites from inside the space station to the outside.

Boeing, the space station’s prime contractor, said in a news release its staff will build and install hardware to connect the pressurized modules of the ISS, formally called “the Passive Common Berthing Mechanism.”

The new commercial airlock will be larger and more robust to better handle the increasing requirements of the private space and satellite industry, Boeing said.

Currently, the United States uses the airlock on the ISS Japanese experiment module for its space station payloads. Astronauts use a separate airlock facility.

“The installation of NanoRacks’ commercial airlock will help us keep up with demand,” said Boeing International Space Station program manager Mark Mulqueen in a statement. “This is a big step in facilitating commercial business on the ISS.” Jeffrey Manber, CEO of NanoRacks, said the deal marks the start of a new chapter in the space station program where the private sector is taking on more responsibilities.

“We see this as only the beginning and are delighted to team with our friends at Boeing,” Manber said.

NanoRacks said in a news release one of its in-house teams will oversee the project management, mechanical and avionics design engineering, safety, operations, quality assurance, mock-ups and crew training, and

the final assembly, integration and testing of the airlock.

Earlier this month, NASA Johnson Space Center gave NanoRacks, which is a partner of Kent-based space transportation company Blue Origin, its small business prime contractor of the year award for 2016.

Intel Renews Focus On Artificial Intelligence, Merges Units Under New Chief Intel merged its artificial intelligence units into a single operating group overseen by Naveen Rao. Rao will serve as the unit’s vice president and general manager. Rao was previously CEO of chip startup Nervana, which was acquired by Intel last year for a reported $408 million.

Santa Clara-based Intel’s ar tificial intelligence products group will focus on the development of chips and software products tied to machine learning, algorithms and deep learning. In addition, Intel said it will create an applied AI research lab “dedicated to pushing the forefronts of computing.”

“Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing the world around us and will bring new capabilities to everything from smart factories to drones to sports to health care and to driverless cars,” Rao said in a blog post on Thursday. “Data is the common thread across all these applications, and our strategy is to make Intel the driving force of the data revolution across every industry.”

Rao noted that the new group will work across multiple units at Intel to help bring AI costs down.The new AI research lab will explore “novel architectural and algorithmic approaches” that could apply to data center technologies and IoT devices.

Wired magazine noted that Intel is likely launching the lab “because it wants to sell the enormous number of computer chips that others will need to build their AI.” Companies like Google and Facebook are already hiring top-tier AI talent to build services that transfer vast amounts of data into insights.The move will also help Intel better compete with the likes of chip maker Nvidia as the AI race heats up.

Intel has made several recent moves to keep pace in the sector. In November, Intel created an automated driving group to work on self-driving cars.

One month later, Intel partnered with Microsoft on Project EVO to bring Microsoft’s virtual assistant Cortana into homes. The company is also creating a reference design for “an Intel-based smart speaker” that includes Amazon’s Alexa virtual assistant.

Drones Are Noisy And Don’t Have Great Depth Perception. New Amazon Tech Aims To Change That.

Amazon.com Inc. has filed a pair of drone patent applications focused on reducing noise and landing packages in a customer’s yard.

The new technology is evidence of the significant resources Amazon is expending on developing its drone delivery system.

The company tested the concept in the UK in December and last week in Palm Springs.

Much of this technology is being developed at the company’s Seattle offices.

To dampen the buzzing sound of Amazon’s flying delivery robots, the company has applied to patent a “floating motor mount” that connects a propeller motor to the body of a drone and quiets the vibrations from the propeller.

Maker Of Electric Vehicle Components Sets Up In West Sacramento A Japanese company that manufactures components for electric vehicles is setting up its U.S. headquarters and first U.S. manufacturing facility in West Sacramento.

Mikuni Color Ltd., which also produces synthetic organic industrial dispersion ink, has moved into 21,000 square feet at Riverside Commerce Center. The exact address was not available, although the center is on Riverside Parkway, in the northern part of the city. The site appears to be owned by Westcore Properties.

Mikuni Color Ltd. manufactures components for electric vehicles. The company is setting up its headquarters in West Sacramento.

According to a news release from the city of West Sacramento, the U.S. site will supply products for manufacturing lithium ion batteries, for use in electric vehicles.

“Such noise modification may be particularly beneficial for certain applications, such as when the [drone] is utilized for delivering an ordered item to a user who may find the unmodified noise to be undesirable,” the filing states.

Amazon also applied for a patent to scan and photograph potential landing or drop-off destinations as the drone descends to the ground. The system would look to make sure the area was clear and that nothing moved into the place during the drone’s descent. The technology would also help the drone know how far it is from its landing site so it could potentially slow down or speed up its descent accordingly.

“Increased demand for electric vehicles will contribute to sustainable development, which is becoming more and more important. One answer is energy harvesting and lithium ion batteries will play a vital role,” said Kozo Kishida, CEO of Mikuni Color USA, in the release.

The patent also mentions a “delivery location identifier” that Amazon customers may place in their yard to help the drone determine its path of descent.

Apple To Bring Graphics Chips In House Apple told partner Imagination Technologies it will d e v e l o p i t s ow n graphics technology.

Cupertino-based Apple revealed t h at i t w i l l s t o p using Imagination’s intellectual property for Graphics Processor Units (GPUs) chips within 15-24 months, per a statement from Imagination. The move stems from Apple wanting to use its own alternative.

“Apple has used Imagination’s technology and intellectual property for many years. It has formed the basis of Graphics Processor Units (“GPUs”) in Apple’s phones, tablets, iPods, TVs and watches,” Imagination said in a statement. “Apple has asserted that it has been working on a separate, independent graphics design in order to control its products and will be reducing its future reliance on Imagination’s technology.”

The change is a huge hit for Imagination, which relies on Apple for the majority of its revenue, according to TechCrunch. Reuters reported that Imagination’s share price dropped more than 70 percent on the news.

One year ago, Apple confirmed it was considering acquiring Imagination, but no deal ever materialized, per TechCrunch. However, Apple did poach a few engineers off of Imagination’s team, per MacRumors.

Apple paid Imagination license fees and royalties totaling about $75 million for the year to ending April 2016, making up half of Imagination’s total revenue, according to Fortune. Apple is expected to pay Imagination about $81 million this year. Most of Imagination’s costs come from designing new technology far ahead of when it appears on the market.

In addition to the blow from Apple, Imagination is facing increased competition from chipmaker Qualcomm and British semiconductor firm ARM, according to Fortune. Imagination claims 50 percent of the high-end smartphone market, but maintains just 7 percent of mid-tier devices.

Imagination pointed out that Apple will find it “extremely challenging” to develop its own GPU without infringing on Imagination’s IP.

The production ramp-up for Tesla’s new Model 3 is expected to triple the car manufacturer’s production at its Fremont plant this year and increase its employment there by 50 percent to more than 9,300.

Following the December approval by the Fremont City Council of three new buildings doubling the size of Tesla’s plant to 9.9 million square feet — the former NUMMI manufacturing facility — Tesla’s employee parking facilities have been stretched to the limit. Last month’s opening of the new Warm Springs BART station adjacent to the plant is expected to relieve that situation to a degree, serving between 4,700 to 7,200 passengers each weekday.

Palo Alto-based Tesla shut down production of its Model S (sedan) and Model X (four-wheel drive vehicle) for a week in February to produce a test run of Model 3s, which, at about $35,000 each, are expected to significantly broaden the company’s market beyond luxury vehicles.

More than 400,000 Model 3 orders have been received. Tesla previously announced that it plans to produce 500,000 cars per year in Fremont by 2018.

Tesla announced two weeks ago that it raised $1.2 billion in a new stock offering to “strengthen its balance sheet and further reduce any risks associated with the rapid scaling of its business due to the launch of Model 3.”

That was about 20 percent more than originally planned.

China’s Tencent Holdings Ltd. has bought the entire offering for $1.78 billion (including commissions, giving it a 5 percent stake in Tesla, Reuters reported.

The Journal adds that economists expect this week’s ISM manufacturing index release to show further improvement by hitting 57.5 in March.

The New York Times reports that attendees at the Corporate Law Institute in New Orleans were optimistic that President Trump and his support for lower taxes and reduced regulations mean “deal making should boom” and more mergers are likely. The Times adds that the feeling is “lower taxes and less regulation...should contribute to strong stock prices,” which would lead to companies being “more likely to strike big deals.”

Elon Musk, who fears that artificial intelligence could become a dangerous rival to humans, has now reportedly launched a company that would merge computers with human brains.

The Tesla and SpaceX founder is actively involved in the launch of a Bay Area startup called Neuralink Corp., the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.The business was registered in California as a “medical research” company last July.

Elon Musk, founder of Tesla and SpaceX, is reportedly working on yet another startup.The new one is called Neuralink and is working on ways to connect human brains and computers.

The Journal said Musk may also take a leadership role in the company and quoted unnamed sources who said that it is working on something he calls “neural lace” technology. This involves implanting tiny brain electrodes that can upload and download thoughts.

The report didn’t say exactly where Neuralink is located but said it has hired leading academics and has talked to Founders Fund — the venture firm of Musk’s PayPal co-founder, Peter Thiel — about a possible investment.

A “spaceshot” company that emerged from Y Combinator t h r e e summers ago and is targeting a revolutionary change in the way computers work has landed $64 million to help it in the race against much bigger tech giants.

Rigetti Computing, which operates out of Berkeley and Fremont, is tackling quantum computing and going up against research being done by the likes of IBM, Intel, Microsoft and others.

The stakes are high because a working quantum computing system can tackle problems that are too hard to be done efficiently by today’s computers. For example, it could crack encryption by testing huge numbers of combinations that wouldn’t be feasible today.

Quantum computers store and process information using individual photons, giving them far greater speed than systems built on miniature transistors. Rigetti’s team includes experts in computer science, engineering, physics and chemistry.

A big problem has been the physical challenges involved. A system IBM has been testing, for instance, has to be chilled to a temperature that’s colder than is found in outer space and that takes days to achieve.

Rigetti is building a cloud quantum computing platform for artificial intelligence and computational chemistry. It recently opened up private beta testing of Forest, its API for quantum computing in the cloud. It integrates directly with existing cloud infrastructure and treats the quantum computer as an accelerator.

“Quantum computing will enable people to tackle a whole new set of problems that were previously unsolvable,” Chad Rigetti, the startup’s founder and CEO, said in the funding announcement. “This is the next generation of advanced computing technology. The potential to make a positive impact on humanity is enormous.”

Rigetti said his company is about one to two years from tackling real world problems with its technology. He declined to comment on whether it is getting revenue yet.

Add 1 Robot On The Manufacturing Line, Watch 5 Jobs Go Poof A m e r i c a n manufacturing jobs have been in decline for decades, with automation long identified as the key dr iver of those job losses.

Now, a new working paper from economists Daron Acemoglu of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Pascual Restrepo of Boston University suggests the negative economic effect of this automation might be ever greater, as they found little evidence that other industries have grown enough to offset the jobs lost to robots in manufacturing.

The issue is particularly acute given that technological advances will likely keep coming, and businesses likely will continue to keep deciding that they’d rather invest in automated labor rather than human labor, MIT’s Technology Review reported recently.

Furthermore, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin told Axios he’s “optimistic” that robots won’t displace people in the near future.

Acemoglu and Restrepo’s paper puts some hard numbers to the question of how many people robots displaced from their jobs from 1990 to 2007. Specifically, the paper said, “one more robot reduces aggregate employment by about 5.6 workers… and one more robot per thousand workers reduces wages in the aggregate by about 0.5 percent.”

Economists have hypothesized that when robots displace manufacturing workers, jobs in other fields pop up to offset those losses. The new paper says that hasn’t happened to a large degree in part because, on the local level, those displaced workers generally aren’t qualified for or aren’t willing to do those new jobs or other jobs that might be hiring, so they remain unemployed and the new jobs that do get filled elsewhere don’t make up the difference, according to The New York Times.

As for what might be ahead, The Washington Post analyzed how voting data seems to correlate with where people lost jobs to automation. Rust Belt regions where manufacturing automation has been most concentrated tended to vote for Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton last year. That suggests Trump’s message about reinvigorating American manufacturing played especially well in the same communities where automation put many people out of work, the Post said. But at the same time, it also suggests Trump’s efforts to have companies keep their manufacturing plants open in the United States isn’t as direct an appeal as it could be, as it’s one thing to call for companies to keep their operations in the U.S. and another to call for plants to hire people rather than invest in robots.

SpaceX Launches Communications Satellite Using Recycled Rocket SpaceX successfully launched a commercial communications satellite last month using a recycled rocket.

The rocket took off from Cape Canaveral, Florida sending a communications satellite into orbit and subsequently landed on one of SpaceX’s drone ships floating in the Atlantic.

The Hawthorne, California-based company initially landed the same rocket booster on a floating platform last year, according to The Los AngelesTimes.The use of a recycled rocket represents a major advance for the company and signifies a way to make space flight more cost effective.

“It means you can fly and refly an orbital class booster, which is the most expensive part of the rocket,” SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said on the company’s live stream shortly after the landing. “This is going to be, ultimately, a huge revolution in spaceflight.”

SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell said reusable rockets could eventually cut the company’s launch prices by 30 percent, perTheTimes. Launching one of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rockets currently costs at least $62 million.

Last month, Elon Musk’s aerospace company announced it will fly two private citizens to the moon and back.The journey is slated to take place in the fourth quarter of next year.

The space tourist mission will take place aboard a Dragon 2 capsule powered by a Falcon Heavy rocket, which is due to launch its first test flight this summer. SpaceX will send the Dragon 2 to the International Space Station later this year in autopilot mode without people aboard, followed by a crewed mission in the second quarter of 2018.

Fast-Growing Eyewear Startup Shifts Some Manufacturing To Portland Just over a year ago, Portland entrepreneur Jason Bolt sold his upstart company Society43, a maker of collegiatebranded sunglasses, in order to focus his attention on his other startup — Revant, a maker of replacement eyeglass lenses.

It was a move that continues to garner success for Bolt and Revant.

Revant CEO Jason Bolt said the company, a maker of replacement eyeglass lenses, will begin manufacturing its lenses in Portland next month.

Using the proceeds from the sale of Society43, Revant has evolved into a company of 21 people while carving a niche for itself in the the business of replacing lenses for high-end sunglasses that work for brands such as Oakley or Ray-Ban. Now, the company is gearing up for its largest product expansion yet. It will soon be manufacturing on-demand lenses here in Portland. This means anyone with frames they love — high-end or not — can purchase replacement lenses that could be made locally by Revant.

To do this, the company has gathered an inventory of frame details and the proper equipment — in particular, a five-axis router that can cut any sort of lens. The move will boost the number of products it can produce from 6,000 to 60,000, Bolt said, which

includes both prescription and non-prescription glasses.

Until now, Revant worked exclusively with manufacturing partners in China, Taiwan and Japan to make its lenses. Bringing some of that manufacturing in-house has been a project two years in the making.

“There are cost implications to do so,” Bolt said. “For us, we refined who we are and what our values are and the growth opportunities ahead. (Manufacturing) needed to be a core competency. To scale up, we needed the equipment here.”

Revant, which ranked 56th on the 2016 Business Journal list of the region’s100 fastest-growing companies, leased about 2,500 square feet of warehouse space not far from its headquarters in the Ford Building at Southeast 11th Avenue and Division Street.

Boeing Fires Warning Shot To Suppliers As Aircraft Seat Shortage Persists Automotive seat maker Adient says it’s collaborating with Boeing to explore how to design and build better commercial aircraft seating and interiors.

The announcement appears to be a warning shot at airplane seat makers that have failed to keep up with growing demand, resulting in supply chain delays and stalled aircraft deliveries to airlines.

Adient stopped short of saying it will become a Boeing airplane seat supplier. In 2015, Boeing was forced to park unfinished Dreamliner 787 jets in California’s Mojave desert as it waited for premium seats from French supplier Zodiac Aerospace.

United Airlines parked two brand-new airplanes because of Zodiac seating shortages that left the aircraft cabins unfinished, travel industry news website Skift reported.

Chinese Manufacturer Bringing 200 Jobs To McClellan, Greater Sacramento Says A Chinese manufacturing company is expected to set up shop at McClellan Business Park, and will hire 200 employees, according to the Greater Sacramento Economic Council.

According to a media advisory from Greater Sacramento, the economic development organization will announce the new company at a press conference at the McClellan Conference Center. The company will be hiring “more than 200 employees locally,” the advisory states, and the new plant will be located in a 140,000-square-foot building at the business park.

The company will be the latest from China in recent months to announce expansion to the Sacramento area. Boshaw has seen firsthand the consumer shift to more online purchases, and it’s been good for business. He projects the company will hit $200 million in revenue this year, up from $155 million last year.

“More people are becoming comfortable with – and preferring – ordering products online, delivered to their doorstep,” Boshaw said. “That plays right into what we manufacture and how we can support those businesses.”

When Boshaw’s parents, Phil and Cathy Boshaw, founded the company in 1975, it was called PAC National Inc. and was concentrated in the courier industry: the U.S. Postal Service, Airborne Express and several small regional couriers.

The company changed hands in 1989, but by 1996 Boshaw’s parents bought it back. Then, in 1998, his parents acquired the corrugated sheet plant he had started in Arizona. Boeing’s Apache Deal Could Be Worth More Than $7 Billion The Boeing Co. scored a major win, with the Pentagon announcing that it reached a $3.3 billion agreement to buy 268 AH-64E Apache attack helicopters — with 24 of those going to Saudi Arabia.

But recently, Boeing executives and military officials assured reporters that the deal could be — and likely would be — much larger. This five-year contract includes options that push the total value to more than $7 billion.

The contract allows for up to 450 total Apache orders through a mix of Army and international purchases.

While Boeing’s military production is not done in the Puget Sound region, big deals like this can take some of the pressure off the region’s commercial airplane division.

The multiyear nature of this contract allows Boeing to keep its Apache production line hot and gives the company certainty in this business line over the next five years. This allows the company to crank these helicopters out and save costs as the volume increases. This initial base contract alone will allow for cost savings of about $330 million — a figure that would expand as more options are exercised. Those savings in price, program officials said, would further attract more interest.

“We intend to see additional interest and growth as a result of this multiyear contract award,” said Kimberly Smith, Boeing’s vice president of attack helicopter programs.The multiyear allows customers to order against a catchall contract, rather than negotiate standalone deals, which Smith said would “allow for an expedited and efficient process.”

While both Boeing executives and Army officials declined to comment on the potential international customers, Army Col. Joseph Hoecherl, project manager for the Apache program, said five international customers have expressed a “very serious interest” in getting in on this multiyear deal. Last summer, the Port of Portland sold 29 acres in the Gresham Vista Business Park to Trammell Crow Company for $7.8 million. The developer is building three buildings ranging from 155,000 square feet to 190,000 square feet.

The port also sold 37 acres in the park to Specht Development Inc. for $9.3 million. On those acres, Specht and its partner, NewYork Life Real Estate, is well on its way to completing the three-building Vista Logistics Park, which upon its planned Sept. 1 delivery will offer up three buildings totaling more than 733,000 square feet. The discrepancy comes largely from a lag in supply and a boost in demand in recent years. During the recession, what had been delivered to the market annually all but dried up, especially in the speculative and large space market.

Then, as the economy picked up in 2014 and 2015, companies needed more space — and quick. But new construction takes time.

The result: a market-wide vacancy rate of 3.9 percent, rents up 16 percent year-over-year in 2016 and vacated space that gets snatched up before it even has a chance to hit the market.Throw in some massive new leases – Amazon took 303,000 square feet on the west side and will take another 855,000 square feet in Troutdale in 2018, while CTDI signed for 210,000 square feet — and the market is a tight one.

Airbus America has increased its spending in the Pacific Northwest aerospace supply chain by 70 percent over the last three years, Procurement Director Joe Marcheschi says.

The European jet maker is forecasting its spending will continue to steadily grow in the region as it ramps up production rates for its A320 and A350 passenger jets, he added.

Airbus America Procurement Director Joe Marcheschi discused how to become a supplier for the France-based jet maker at a recent conference in Seattle.

Marcheschi shared those numbers and a pitch to become an Airbus supplier to local aerospace players attending the Pacific Northwest Aerospace Alliance’s 2017 conference.

Like Boeing,Airbus puts potential suppliers through their paces, subjecting them to a rigorous qualification process. That includes product quality audits and manufacturing process quality audits.

Airbus’ top five suppliers in the Pacific Northwest are (in alphabetical order): Crane Aerospace and Electronics, Honeywell, Kaiser, Panasonic, and PCC Aerostructures. Kaiser and Crane are affiliates of Rockwell Collins.

As Boeing suppliers in the room listened intently, Marcheschi described what Airbus looks for in its suppliers, which he said play a key role in helping his company meet its delivery commitments: • Ability to ramp up: Suppliers must demonstrate they have sufficient capacity to meet the jetmaker’s needs.

• On-time delivery: Sustained excellent performance is key.

• Quality: Partners must make it right the first time.

• Cost: Vendors need to be creative and propose solutions to reduce costs.

The CEO of Local Motors, whose company produced the world’s first opensource car, the Rally Fighter, is coming off a path-breaking year. The company designed and built the first 3D-printed car and then shifted gears to join with GE to bring its innovative co-creation and micro-manufacturing process to the appliances business through FirstBuild.

But Rogers, a former marine with an MBA from Harvard, doesn’t see the cocreation movement ending there. “From consumer to industrial applications within fields such as medicine, defense and manufacturing, the possibilities are limitless,” he tells Ideas Lab. In an interview, Rogers discusses the prospects for co-creation, 3D printing, sustainable transportation and the future direction of auto manufacturing itself: You have demonstrated that co-creation isn’t just a viable business model, but a powerful innovation spark. What industries are best poised to benefit — or be disrupted by — co-creation?

Just 10 years ago, the ability to engage a global community of innovators in co-creation was near impossible. The tools for collaboration and design were simply not accessible to the average person.

You developed the first fully functional 3D-printed car. How will 3D printing technology and the way it’s used evolve? Are we moving closer to the democratization of manufacturing?

At Local Motors, we view 3D printing (additive manufacturing) as just one of the many tools available in a suite of tools used to make things.

Depending on the function and design, it may make more sense to form, cut, weld, fasten or coat material. It is important to note that 3D printing is not a “one tool fits all” solution — like anything, there are inherent benefits and drawbacks to the technique.

Perhaps the greatest advantage that 3D printing has over other manufacturing methods is that it gives the user control of where materials are placed. Smart designers are able to create complex pieces optimized for strength and weight. As we continue to focus our efforts on local transportation challenges, I believe that you will notice that there is no single “one size fits all” solution to transportation. Instead, many solutions appropriate to the needs of a local community will emerge.

The new global is local. The world is increasingly in a position to switch to a model of contained-energy economies. Such economies utilize local resources to create the energy powering the production and transportation ecosystem.The result is that jobs are created locally, while wealth that had been traditionally exported from the community is captured and reinvested.

Altering a design is as simple as uploading new instructions to the 3D printer; if a designer or engineer believes that there is room for improvement, they can rapidly prototype and refine the new solution.

The best solutions can then be implemented on the very next vehicle built. This capacity for constant improvement will immediately improve vehicle safety, customizability and speed the pace of technology adoption.

Further, when a thermoplastic material is used in the printing process, the potential for recyclability is tremendous. Imagine being able to recycle your old car and watching a new one printed and assembled for you while you wait.

How can U.S. manufacturing, including the auto sector, best maintain its competitiveness? What can it learn from Local Motors?

Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin Lands Deal To Launch Satellites Jeff Bezos’ rocket firm signed a new client that will boost major launch activity at the $205 million manufacturing plant it’s building.

Kent-based Blue Origin announced that it will do five New Glenn rocket launches for satellite maker OneWeb. Signing Blue Origin as the firm to launch its satellites is ideal because of the proximity to Blue Origin’s rocket manufacturing center at Kennedy Space Center’s Exploration Park.

OneWeb hopes to launch 900 satellites into orbit within a few years. A new constellation of microsatellites could provide affordable broadband to billions of people not yet connected to the Internet.

Both companies are expected to create hundreds of high-wage jobs once the projects are complete. Blue Origin will create 330 jobs paying an average annual salary of $89,000, and OneWeb will create 250 jobs paying an average annual salary of $64,500.

Blue Origin made headlines when it announced satellite operator Eutelsat as its first client for its New Glenn rocket. Launches for Blue Origin’s most powerful rocket will take place at Cape Canaveral’s Launch Complex 36. Its first launch is scheduled to take place in 2021.
