“Most people, if you live in a big city, you see some form of schizophrenia every day, and it’s always in the form of someone homeless. ‘Look at that guy - he’s crazy. He looks dangerous.’ Well, he’s on the streets because of mental illness. He probably had a job and a home.” Eric McCormack

The A2Z Manufacturing magazine is in its 22nd year, and it has, since its inception, been a tool to promote positive news in manufacturing. We simply don’t publish bad news. As we go to print, I have a heavy heart. And I don’t think it is just me…I can see it in the face of friends, colleagues, and family.

Our world has never been as scary in my life as it is at this present time. My adult children have both traveled internationally in the past couple of months, and I admit, I was worried for their safety abroad. Just last month, The New York Times stated “In total, more than 1,200 people outside of Iraq and Syria have been killed in attacks inspired or coordinated by the Islamic State.” The research goes on to say that nearly half of the victims were killed in attacks that targeted Westerners. The others have been civilians in Arab and other non-Western countries, killed in mosques, government offices and other targets. Closer to home, in our own great United States, we are seeing horrific acts of violence, targeting Police officers, the LGBT community, and people of color. I am a firm believer that most people are inherently good. When we see incidents like we are watching on TV or reading about nearly daily, I think we have to consider that many of these people doing unthinkable criminal activities are suffering from a mental illness of one form or another. My sister is an Army veteran and a psychiatrist. She served over in Iraq and today she is helping active Veterans with mental illness. One of her recent patients served 8 tours in combat. Understandably, this soldier suffers from PTSD (Post-traumatic stress disorder), a mental health condition that’s triggered by a terrifying event — either experiencing it or witnessing it. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares and severe anxiety. This patient didn’t seek help on his own. When his erratic behavior became so severe as to potentially lose his wife and family, he was forced to seek help. People suffering from mental illness are not likely to get the help they desperately need on their own.

I suspect that nearly every reader of this publication knows someone who suffers from mental illness. A study from The Kim Foundation estimates that ~26.2 percent of Americans ages 18 and older suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year.

Published bi-monthly to keep precision manufacturers abreast of news and to supply a viable vendor source for the industry.

What does this mean? In our business and personal life, it is up to us to help those who are suffering. The Mayo Clinic cites signs and symptoms that include: Feeling sad or down. Confused thinking or reduced ability to concentrate. Excessive fears or worries, or extreme feelings of guilt. Extreme mood changes of highs and lows. Withdrawal from friends and activities. Significant tiredness, low energy or problems sleeping.

Circulation:The A2Z Manufacturing has compiled and maintains a master list of approximately 6500 people in the Rocky Mountain states actively engaged in the Precision Manufacturing Industry. It has an estimated pass on readership of more than 18,000 people.

If you know of someone who is suffering with signs of mental illness, identify these issues with others, and do all you can to help the individual to become productive and healthy again. We can all help. It will go a long way towards makng America safe again. On a much more positive note, you can read about some very good news regarding the state of manufacturing in our country. You can also learn about the latest innovations in manufacturing by attending IMTS in Chicago this September. Until next issue, I wish you the best, and God Bless Our Troops!

Smith Machinery Recognizes Jack Treasure Of Live Wire EDM, Often Referred To As The “Father Of EDM In Utah” For Continuing To Invest In The Future! Jack Treasure opened ‘Live Wire EDM’ 23 years ago, as a pure EDM job shop. Prior to opening Live Wire EDM, Jack was an F4 Phantom pilot in the Airforce and he studied mechanical engineering in college. When he decided to make a new career for himself, he went to work for a wire EDM company, where he learned the trade. Shortly after becoming a seasoned wire EDM machinist, Jack bought the EDM equipment from his employer and started his own company. Jack says, “Back in 1993 there were a few shops in Utah that had wire EDM capabilities, but this is just one of the machine technologies they were utilizing. Live Wire EDM may have been the first pure wire EDM company here.” Today, Jack is still enjoying wire EDMing for his customers, and he has added EDM small hole drilling. For his wire EDM, Jack purchased 2 Mitsubishi wire EDMs through Smith Machinery, one just last March. Jack named the company ‘Live Wire EDM’, he says, because a live wire is a charged wire. And this is what EDM is all about. Jack says that Clark Smith, owner of Smith Machinery, and his sales engineer, David Soares, take very good care of him. He adds, “Clark also buys me colorful socks sometimes!” To learn more about how Live Wire EDM can help you with your EDM needs, contact Jack at 801-544-8581; Email: jack@livewireedm.com

Seventh Blanchard Grinder Added To The Dix Metals Fleet Ever conscious of the demands on manufacturers’ time and margins, Dix Metals has acquired a seventh Blanchard grinder to complement the existing fleet of Blanchard grinders, six double disc grinders and ten duplex mills already on their production line. Best suited for single-sided material removal and grinding applications too large for doubledisc grinding, Blanchard grinding, also known in the industry as rotary surface grinding, quickly removes stock from one side of a part. Each Blanchard grinder has the ability to offer dimensional tolerances to ±.001”, parallelism to .001”, and flatness to .001” part-to-part thickness consistency, multiple part grinding ability and size versatility, in order to meet exacting precision standards. Ideal in the production of large parts like mold plates, rotary tables or vacuum chambers, Blanchard grinding can also be an effective method for simultaneous grinding of multiple smaller parts. Dix Metals stocks a host of materials including aluminum, stainless steel and other alloys, which can be ground using the Blanchard grinding method, but they also welcome customer supplied material. Dix Metals prides itself on reducing customers’ prep time, production time and labor costs by supplying custom machine ready blanks direct to the customer. Increasing throughput on the shop floor means parts ship out faster, allowing customers increased efficiency, reduction in costs and noticeable improvements in profitability.

Preparing for a Business Move Step 4: Plan the Construction Step four in the six-step series on preparing for a business move is planning the construction. Once you have completed step three and decided whether you need to build, retrofit, lease or buy, you’re ready to move ahead. Design-Build vs. Design-Bid-Build With a design-build project you will work with a single contact person or team, instead of with both a designer and a contractor. On the other hand, a design-bid-build project will require you to work with several teams to finish your project. The one you choose will depend on your specific needs. You’ll also need to consider the following: • Timeline – Design-build is usually best for tight timelines. • Cost – Always get a detailed quote and plan for change orders. • Bonding Fees – Budget for a bonding fee as a sort of insurance. • Proven Record – Always choose firms with proven records of success Announcements Continued Page 13

Lockheed Martin Prepares To Build Another Batch Of Trident Submarine-Launched Ballistic Missiles U.S. Navy strateg ic weapons experts are preparing to buy another batc h of submar inelaunched nuclear ballistic missiles that are capable o f d e s t roy i n g c i t y sized targets virtually anywhere in the world.

and is deployed aboard U.S. Navy Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines. The U.S. Navy operates 14 of these ballistic missile submarines, each of which can carry as many as 24 Trident II missiles. Although the Trident II is designed to carry as many as 12 multiple independently targetable reentry vehicle (MIRV) warheads, current treaties reduce this number to four or five. The Navy started the D-5 Life Extension Program in 2002 to replace obsolete components using as many commercial off-theshelf (COTS) parts as possible to keep costs down and to enhance the missile’s capability.

Officials of the U.S. Navy Strategic Systems Program Office in Washington announced a $21.8 million contract to the Lockheed Martin Space Systems segment, for long lead items to support the fiscal 2017 Trident II D5 missile production schedule.

In practice, the Trident II missile’s inertial measurement system receives targeting data from computers aboard the submarine. The inertial measurement unit then transmits signals to the D-5 flightcontrol computer and converts them into steering commands to keep the ballistic missile on target.

The Trident II D5 is one of the most advanced submarine-launched atomic missiles in the world. Each Trident II missile has a range of 4,000 to 7,000 miles. The Trident II D-5 was first deployed in 1990 and is scheduled to remain in service until at least 2027.

The missile’s post-boost control system maneuvers the missile in flight to observe stars for the missile’s celestial navigation subsystem, which updates the inertial system in flight.

Long-lead items involve system components that require the longest time to build, which could delay overall system production if money isn’t allocated for production early in the process. The Trident II D-5 is the primary U.S. sea-based nuclear ballistic missile, A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Lockheed Martin also is integrating the Trident II onto the nextgeneration ballistic submarine designs of the U.S. and United Kingdom by adapting the Trident II missile and reentry subsystems into the common missile compartment for the Ohio replacement and United Kingdom successor programs.

NASA, Lockheed Martin Reach Jupiter With Juno Space Probe NASA’s Juno spacecraft made a tricky high-speed entry into orbit around Jupiter last month, completing a 1.7 billion-mile journey that began five years ago in Jefferson County. While many watched 4th of July fireworks, teams of engineers at the Lockheed Martin Space Systems Co. headquartered southwest of Denver and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, listened on edge to transmissions from the $1.1 billion science probe for indications Juno successfully made it into the giant planet’s orbit. “That’s how good this team is.You’re the best — you nailed it,” said researcher Scott Bolton, giddy at a press conference late Monday night. Bolton, a scientist with San Antonio-based Southwest Research Institute, conceived of and is leading Juno’s research mission meant to unlock mysteries about Jupiter. Lockheed Martin Space Systems Co. built Juno for NASA, developing a thick titanium-shielded body to protect the electronic components on board from the intense radiation put off by the gas planet. Juno is the first solar-powered spacecraft to reach the solar system’s outer planets. Previous probes to venture so deep into space used nuclear power. Transmissions from the craft take 48 minutes to reach earth. About two dozen people in the Lockheed Martin flight-control center, and more at JPL’s NASA lab, listened for changes in the tone of signals from Juno to indicate when its main engine fired on and shut off. Then, there was a tension-filled wait for the spacecraft to unfurl its solar panels, turn toward the distant sun and begin to re-charge its batteries for its 20-month mission orbiting Jupiter 37 times. Guy Beutelschies, LMSS’ director of interplanetary programs, marveled Monday night Juno could reach a hostile environment at such speed and arrive with such precision.

away the population of plant labor, Heimrich believes advanced manufacturing will actually drive up employment numbers when you count in the world of industrial technology vendors. “With Industry 4.0, industry is coming back stronger,” said Heimrich. “There are more jobs in an industry with connectivity. We believe we will provide an entire eco-system, not just for control systems, but also for communications, security, and industrial data-driven manufacturing.” Advances From the Design to the Customer Heimrich sees the advances in smart manufacturing stretching all the way back to the design of the product itself. “The process of how the product is designed is changing completely,” said Heimrich. “We start in a virtual world, designing the product and putting it in a simulated world where we build all of the components. It’s a digital enterprise concept.“

Visit us at booth N-6487 at IMTS

As well as digitizing the design process, Heimrich notes that the digital reach should extend beyond the manufacturing process, moving out to the end user by taking the end user’s response to the product and bringing it back to the design team. “Customers want to interact with the producer of the product. Customization is playing a big role in helping the customer interact with the design process,” said Heimrich. “It’s a vertical integration of design and consumer use that also includes the supply chain. It’s more than simple connectivity. It gives the customer the ability to interact with the design.”

US Will Be at the Forefront in Disruption of Manufacturing

Digitization Improves Plant Efficiency

Just as booksellers and the recording industry were completely disrupted by digitization, the manufacturing industry is experiencing the beginning a complete revamping, according to Klaus Heimrich, member of the managing board of Siemens, during the opening session of Siemens Automation Summit in Las Vegas.

In Heimrich’s view, manufacturing will become more efficient with digitization, and not just in the consumption of energy. “We have to think about how we can make our processes faster in timeto-market while also making them more efficient,” said Heimrich. “We’re seeing an increase in both flexibility and quality. The new efficiency is not only in the use of energy. It’s also in how long it takes to design the product.”

Heimrich asserted that competition requires an overhaul of pervious practices in industry just as it has in consumer products. “Only innovation and the ability to disrupt can keep competitors at bay,” said Heimrich. “Customers expect individualized products. If you don’t give it to them, someone else will. This increases pressure on industrial enterprises.” While the concept of Industry 4.0 was christened in Germany, Heimrich pointed to the US as the place where digital advances will likely develop for industrial technology. “The United States plays a pivotal role in industrial digitation. In the US, you have leading companies with leading expertise,” said Heimrich. “Digitalization is improving the quality of life, and now visualization is knocking on the door. This is a chance for companies in the US to be even more competitive than they are today.” While skeptics have insisted that advanced technology carves A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

He pointed to software as having the largest potential to bringing innovation to industry. “The biggest advance in machine building is software. Software drives the capability of the company,” said Heimrich. “It’s not only with the automation. It’s in the use of the right industry software along with automation. The next step is not just producing the same bottle of shampoo more efficiently, it’s actually producing a new shampoo that the customer helps to create.” Heimrich believes digitization will also revamp plant maintenance “Take 3D visualization. You can go into the plant with visualization to train your maintenance guy. You do the test-and-check for integrating a new pump. If you see something is wrong, you can go back and improve it in your design,” he said. “This produces a huge benefit in training and results in faster installation time.” Source: Design News

Littleton-based Thompson Creek operates the Mount Milligan copper and gold mine in Canada’s British Columbia. It also has molybdenum mines in British Columbia and Idaho. It has accumulated considerable debt since acquiring the Mount Mulligan mine six years ago and has been hurt by sagging gold, copper and molybdenum prices. Its share price has dropped about 95 percent over the last five years, Bloomberg reports. Centerra is offering a premium of 32 percent on Thompson Creek’s share closing price as of July 4. As part of the deal, Centerra will redeem Thompson Creek notes for $889 million. It said it has a deal with Denver-based Royal Gold Inc. to restructure a “streaming” deal for future metals production with Thompson Creek. “To broaden interest and maximize value, we demonstrated some flexibility in amending our gold stream to generate interest from gold companies,” Royal Gold CEO Tony Jensen said. The merger is expected to close this fall. It will leave Centerra investors owning about 92 percent of the combined company. A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

SME Announces Winners Of Additive Manufacturing Competition SME, working with Stratasys, sponsored a student additive manufacturing competition at the 52nd annual SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference in Louisville, Kentucky, June 21-23. The students were evaluated on their abilities and knowledge of additive manufacturing/3D printing processes. SME created the additive manufacturing contest to attract students to the new, exciting, emerging technologies and tools involved. These technologies are already very relevant to industry and companies are looking for a workforce with additive manufacturing/3D printing experience and ability. The competition helps contestants better understand additive manufacturing applications, and with the support of Stratasys, the 3D printing and additive manufacturing solutions company, students get hands-on experience using the latest 3D printing technology and software. Twenty-two teams competed in this year’s SkillsUSA Additive Manufacturing Competition, and six teams walked away with gold, silver and bronze medals for showcasing excellence in the field of digital and additive manufacturing. Prizes for the frontrunners include scholarships from the SME Education Foundation, a MakerBot Mini printer, 3D mouse, and SolidWorks 3D CAD design software. “The winners of this year’s Additive Manufacturing competition repreA2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

sent some of the best and brightest at their schools,” said Jeff Krause, CEO of SME. “Additive manufacturing/3D printing is growing rapidly, and the demand for talent in this field continues to outpace the availability of the workforce. Capturing the attention of high school students is key to securing a skilled workforce.” Now in its second year, the SkillsUSA Additive Manufacturing competition included two design challenges and a written knowledge exam to evaluate students’ general understanding of additive manufacturing technology. Each team designed a trading pin and catapult – printed onsite – to meet contest specifications including 3D print time, size, and material usage. After completing the design process and challenge, the teams presented their findings and engineering notebooks to a panel of judges – professionals in the additive manufacturing field. The National SkillsUSA conference hosted the top 6,000 high school and college students out of 300,000 contestants nationally to the week-long championship event that highlight the capabilities of career and technical education students in their respective fields. Your ISO 9001: 2008 Certified Precision Machine Shop In Colorado Springs That Specializes in Small to Large Diameter Parts

Likely, you have heard of MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). Its not just a great engineering school back East, it is considered one of the best in the world. US News ranked it #1 in their latest rankings, ahead of Stanford University. Forrest Titcomb, founder of Kineo Inc., earned his masters degree at this impressive university. After college, Forrest worked as an engineer for a number of large companies, including Digital Equipment Corp (DEC) and General Electric, to name a few. In 2003, Forrest founded Kineo, named after a beautiful mountain in the Moosehead range of Maine. Forrest loves manufacturing — it is in his blood. He has been involved in several designs over the years that have resulted in a dozen patents. And his sons Nate and Bill are following in Forrest’s footsteps, likely the very individuals who will some day take over the family business. Son Nate is a gifted machinist, he excels at programming, and he was mentored not just by Forrest but also by the Journeymen machinists the company employs. Oldest son Bill graduated with a degree in Operations Management from the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado. Bill says, “I was working for my father, doing inspection, and I knew that if I didn’t go back to college at A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

an early age, I would never do it.” Bill left the family business to complete his degree before coming back to support the business as a Business Development team member. While Kineo owns 14 CNC lathes and mills, as well as a Citizen screw machine, they admit that their specialty is lathes. They own 10 lathes today, mostly Haas, and their customers come to them for their ability to make small and large diameter round parts. Bill says that the larger round parts the company machines are up to 16” in diameter, and can bar feed 4” diameter rods. They also own 4 Haas mills (with 4th axis capability). Bill says that the company supports customers in a number of industries, including solar energy, commercial, industrial, medical, and computer/electronics. Forrest says a number of their customers value Kineo’s ability to machine parts as well as do higher production (automated) parts via their Citizen screw machine. For some of their long-term customers that require it, Kineo supports their inventory using the kanban methodology. In the report cards they receive, they earn ‘A’ grades for their quality and on-time delivery, and while a large number of the parts they make are components of finished products, they also do complete assemblies. The company has been ISO 9001:2008 certified for the past 5 years. Kineo has a full time Inspector, Bill says, and he adds, “All

company employees have the ability to use our CMM inspection equipment (we have 2 CMMs), and we are so fortunate to have such talented machinists and support staff.” Kineo employs best in class software to machine and inspect parts. “We utilize SolidWorks and MasterCAM and we run the shop using JobBoss”, he elaborated. Their CMM utilizes Nikon provided software. Making sure 100% of the parts that ship to the customer are correct is standard procedure here. Training is integral to Kineo’s business. Just this summer, Forrest brought on two engineering students from his undergraduate alma-mater Worchester Polytechnic Institute who are not only working on projects for their degree, but they are gaining the benefit of seeing and experiencing the projects being manufactured at Kineo. Bill says that internal training is conducted on an ongoing basis, as continuous improvement is a key element to the company’s ability to consistently make great parts for their customers. Forrest formed Kineo 13 years ago, in 2003. For the beginning years he purchased used machines, mostly Haas machines. Forrest says, “Our oldest Haas machine is 19 years old, and it is still running today.” Used machines do break down sometimes, and Forrest enlisted the maintenance support from MMT (Monckton’s Machine Tools). Forrest says, “The team at MMT provided superior support from day 1, even though we hadn’t purchased the machines from them.” He continued, “As the business grew, and we had the financial capability to purchase new machine tools, we knew that we would buy them from the company that supported us from the beginning, MMT.” Until he took over as General Manager for MMT, Mark Smith supported Kineo as their sales engineer. Today, Tony Rudd has taken over to support the team. Bill and Forrest value Tony’s expertise in the industry, as he formerly ran a machine shop and was a tools sales person for a number of years. Forrest says that over the years, the service and support Kineo consistently receives from MMT is outstanding. “When we have a machine down, they are here same or next day, and often they have the spare part needed in their truck.” With the merger of MMT with Productivity Inc. they are even stronger. He also values the fact that the Haas machine tools are designed and manufactured in the United States,

in Oxnard, CA. “I was absolutely impressed with the operation when Mark Smith brought me to the Haas Corporate facility for a tour”, he added. Bill continued,” We like the Haas machines. They work really well for what we do and they are a very good value. We like to stick with a machine tool that our team is all comfortable with.” He added, “We buy our Haas machines equipped with wireless probes – it is an option Haas provides as an extremely economical add-on.” Just this past year, Kineo is undergoing is third expansion in its current facility. Forrest says, “We are adding new customers and we are growing with many of our current customers.” Bill and Forrest both agree – the expansion Kineo is undergoing will enable them to continue to add capacity – and this means that they can grow while supporting their customers with ‘A’ rated quality and delivery. Local: (801)the 978-0562 When Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) releases its monthly Fax: (801) 978-0623 manufacturing job numbers, most people following the markets pay www.westernstatesmetals.com attention. Why? Because like the canary in the coal mine, slowing or declining manufacturing jobs have historically been an indicator of a weakening economy.

In 2016, the BLS has reported relatively flat numbers in the manufacturing sector. While June added some jobs, previous months lost many more. Although recent trends show that traditional manufacturing jobs appear to be going away, Deloitte is still projecting America to be the most competitive manufacturing economy in the world by 2020, even surpassing China. So, how is this possible considering we’re losing industrial job positions each month?

Manufacturers are retooling for low-volume, high-mix production, the idea of manufacturing small quantities of many different customized products to meet customers’ unique needs. They are tapping into sophisticated supply chain technologies and moving production operations closer to customers to improve speed and lower costs. Mass production is taking a back seat to mass customization and personalization of products. Processes that required manual production, paper work and hands-on support have been reduced. But other skillsets such as information technology, digital design, digital production management, supply chain management, big data, analytics and integration are in high demand. It’s easy to see the impact these changes have made when we look at a specific, small-scale example, such as creating a custom prototype. In the past, this could take many months of designing, testing, iterating and building, only to back up and restart after the testing phase.Today, digital tools including design software, virtual testing and analytics, paired with rapid prototyping and production technologies, allow product developers to reduce this formerly lengthy process to mere days in some cases.

The Digital Disruption

And this digital renaissance is not limited to 3D printing technologies. Traditional processes like CNC machining and injection molding have achieved amazing advances in quality, efficiency and speed because of software and hardware automation, too.

Not included in these manufacturing numbers are the burgeoning number of new roles that are powering the digital disruption happening in manufacturing. The same skills required of software developers at the likes of Google, Facebook and Amazon are now being applied

This quick turnaround has become critical in an age where low-volume, high-mix production is becoming the norm. The ability to transition quickly throughout the entire product life cycle process will help manufacturers stay on top of consumer demand and take advantage of trends.

Enabling the Modern Manufacturing Workforce So, despite a reduction in traditional manufacturing roles, digital manufacturing is actually creating thousands of new jobs and reinventing many of the old ones typically associated with the industry. The new jobs require a greater level of digital literacy and often come with higher pay. For example, entry-level mold technicians can make more than $75,000 per year right out of school, and software developers in the digital manufacturing space often bring in more than $100,000 per year. The challenge that all manufacturers now face is making sure we’re preparing our labor force for the jobs of today and tomorrow, not yesterday. We can make big strides by expanding and extending apprenticeship opportunities; continuing to invest in training and development programs; and working to influence STEM at every level of education. But we need to start now because there is already a huge talent shortage in digital manufacturing. The job numbers released by the BLS don’t tell the full story. Global manufacturing continues to be strong—driven by ingenuity, opportunity and consumer demand. As long as we embrace and nurture change and look at the big picture, we can see a clear shift and high demand for the new digital skills and roles that are powering manufacturing, rather than just a decrease in traditional manufacturing opportunities. It’s a great time to invest in education for those both within our industry today and those entering the workforce. Because we’re not losing manufacturing jobs, the roles are just evolving to embrace an important digital shift.

Vestas Secures Orders For 162 MW In The United States Vestas has received two firm and unconditional orders, totaling 162 MW of V110-2.0 MW turbines for projects in the United States. For one of the orders, some of the turbines will be delivered in the 2.2 MW power optimized mode. Vestas and the customer utilized the flexibility of the V110 power modes to customize a site-specific product mix that extracts the maximum wind resource output, reaping the optimal value between yield and cost. Both orders include supply and commissioning of the wind turbines as well as Active Output Management (AOM) 5000 service agreements, a full-scope service package to maximize uptime and performance and energy production. Turbine delivery will begin in the third quarter of 2017. Turbine nacelles, blades, and towers will be produced atVestas’ Colorado factories. “The V110-2.0 MW is our flagship turbine platform in the United States, and the versatility of site-specific power mode combinations unlocks the potential of the wind conditions and increases site output,” says Chris Brown, President ofVestas’ sales and service division in the United States and Canada.

The Centennial State has had faster growth in employment, home prices and personal income than the rest of the nation. It’s having a knockout year in leisure and hospitality with a 5 percent increase in jobs, lost some jobs in mining and natural resources — which includes the oil and gas sector — and maintained its steady growth in the financial services sector. Colorado’s construction industry continues to grow. In 2015, nominal GDP totaled $14.5 billion, or 4.6 percent of total GDP in Colorado making construction the sixth fastest-growing industry in the state. That’s according to an analysis from the University of Colorado Boulder’s Leeds School of Business, which released its Midyear Economic Update.

The report paints a picture of a healthy Colorado economy. More than 75,000 people have moved to Colorado in the last year pushing the state’s population up to 5.5 million and making Colorado the second fastest-growing state in terms of percent change, at 1.9 percent, and seventh in total growth in 2015. Those newcomers may have been attracted to the job scene across the state. Total covered employment in Colorado rose 2.4 percent year-overyear in May 2016. “There has been more growth in leisure and hospitality than we had anticipated,” said Richard Wobbekind, executive director of business research division and senior associate dean for academic programs at CU/Leeds. “There has been more growth in leisure and hospitality than we had anticipated. There more growth in government jobs than we anticipated. We certainly see significant flows into venture capital, particularly in software and applications areas. We remain a more desirerable, more rapid growth state that is able to bring in workforce as needed.” Upbeat jobs numbers

A GRIFFITHS COMPANY

The good news, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, is that all of the Colorado Metropolitan Statistical Areas, saw employment growth year-over-year in May 2016. Metro Denver had the biggest increase with 3.1 percent, followed by Fort Collins at 3 percent and Boulder at 2.7 percent. Colorado Springs also saw job growth of 2.5 percent. And that helped keep Colorado’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in May 2016 at 3.4 percent — below the national average of 4.7 percent — and a civilian labor force of 2.9 million. That’s a 2.4 percent year-over-year increase.

Part of the economy’s positive review is based on 2015 GDP estimates, among other data, released in June that show Colorado’s real GDP had grown 3.6 percent — outpacing the U.S. GDP growth of 2.4 percent. That makes Colorado the fourth fastest-growing state in terms of real GDP

in 2015, behind California, Oregon and Texas. Real GDP is adjusted for inflation while nominal GDP is not. Colorado’s total nominal GDP ranks 18th among all states. The 2015 numbers led to a forecast that the state would increase jobs by 65,000, or 2.6 percent, in 2016. The forecasts from December estimated an employment increase in every sector except natural resources and mining, which was forecast to decrease slightly. As of midyear, that forecast was reaffirmed, the report says. One area that saw increase in jobs was Colorado’s construction industry, which grew to 158,300 jobs as of May 2016. That still does not match pre-recession levels, and today’s jobs are down 6.9 percent from the peak construction employment in July 2007. However, the forecast is that the construction sector will grow the rest of this year. One indicator is that in 2015, nominal GDP totaled $14.5 billion, or 4.6 percent of total GDP in Colorado. Real GDP grew 3.9 percent year-over- year, making construction the sixth fastest-growing industry in the state. Data from Dodge Construction Analytics suggest the value of total construction rose 15 percent in 2015, driven by building construction. And work on several major multiyear projects in Colorado, such as the Gaylord Rockies hotel in Aurora, roadwork on C-470 and commercial facilities for Panasonic and Amazon, will contribute substantially to the value of construction this year. Manufacturing ahead of forecasts In manufacturing, employment continued to make gains, increasing 3.5 percent in 2015 and 1.8 percent year-over-year in May 2016 for a total of 143,300 manufacturing employees in the state. Manufacturing employment surpassed the forecast by 1,100 jobs in 2015 and the sector has made gains for five-consecutive years following a decade of employment losses. Despite sector growth, Colorado has a relatively low concentration of industry employment; it is 35 percent below the national concentration as of May 2016. Manufacturing nominal GDP totaled $23 billion in 2015, making up 7.3 percent of total GDP in the state. Real GDP grew by 3 percent year-over-year in 2015, making it the eighth fastest-growing industry in Colorado. The state posted modest gains of 3.6 percent in its financial services sector adding 3,500 jobs year-over- year as of May 2016. And the sector’s value to the economy continues to grow as well. According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, in 2015, Financial Activities nominal GDP totaled $62 billion, or 19.7 percent of GDP making it the fifth fastest-growing industry in the state. “We will wind up being, at this rate, a top 10 growth state in the country,” Wobbekind said. “You have to feel pretty good about the where state is positioned and that it continues to attract a very talented workforce.” Source: Denver Business Journal A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Aftermarket Spending To Reach $3 Trillion by 2035 Airbus has forecast that global commercial aviation aftermarket spending will hit $3 trillion over the next 20 years, with the Asia-Pacific region expected to represent the largest market share for maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), along with pilot and technician demand. In its first-ever Global Services Forecast (GSF), Toulouse-headquartered Airbus said the cumulative value of MRO activity will be in excess of $1.8 trillion by 2035. The aircraft manufacturer also predicted annual industry MRO spending will grow 4.6% year-on-year, from $53 billion to $132 billion per year. The reasoning behind this, according to the GSF, is due to the near-doubling of the global commercial aircraft fleet, from 19,500 aircraft with more than 100 seats in 2015 to 40,000 by 2035. Much of this growth will come from the Asia-Pacific region, due to the high volumes of aircraft expected to be brought into the fleets of the region’s airlines in the next 20 years to meet demand for air travel. For MRO spending, Europe and North America combined are expected to account for one-third of total market outlay. This also means more pilots and technicians will be needed in order to meet growth. Airbus estimates there are currently around 200,000 active pilots, a figure expected more than double to 450,000 in 20 years. However, Airbus A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

believes this may not be enough, and forecasts as many as 560,000 pilots may need to be trained during that period to meet demand, as well as to offset the retirement of flight crewmembers. Demand for technicians is also forecast to grow, and Airbus predicts approximately 540,000 new staff will be needed to service airframes, engines and components. Airbus is scheduled to further extend its training-center network for aircraft technicians, with a new location scheduled to open in Mexico later this summer. New centers are due to open in the next 18 months in New Delhi, along with facilities in Sao Paulo and in Vietnam, where the OEM will partner with Azul and VietJet, respectively.

Last month marked the biggest event in commercial drone history. America’s skies will now be officially open for business for the safe and responsible use of small unmanned aircraft as a result of new rules recently released by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The new rules are expected to make it easier for companies, farmers, nonprofits, and government agencies to use drones for mapping, building and site inspections, agricultural surveys, commercial television and film production, search-and-rescue operations, academic study, and countless other uses—many of which have yet to be imagined. The FAA’s long-awaited final rules for the commercial operation of small drones are the first comprehensive regulations for unmanned aircraft in the US.When the rules take effect in late August, they will enable a broad array of commercial applications for drones weighing less than 55 pounds.

Safety is central to the new rules. The regulations require that drones be flown within the operator’s line of sight and only during daylight or twilight. They also provide speed and altitude limitations, restrictions regarding operations near airports, and forbid flights over people uninvolved with their operation. Commercial drone pilots must pass a written knowledge test and go through a security vetting process. For operations outside of these parameters, the new rules empower the FAA to waive certain requirements. Depending on how the FAA exercises this waiver authority, it could open the door to an even wider range of innovative applications.

The potential economic impact of this breakthrough technology is breathtaking. Industry studies estimate that in the coming decades commercial drones could generate more than $80 billion in economic growth, and the FAA expects its new rules will result in a net social benefit of up to $9 billion over the next five years. Businesses in every industry should consider how drones could offer a new vantage point for their work, and evaluate the new opportunities and efficiencies created by the new rules. Beyond dollars and cents, unmanned aircraft also have the potential to save lives. They are transforming the ability of first responders to assist in emergencies and disasters. And they are making some of our most dangerous jobs safer. To take one example, more than 12,000 utility line workers were injured or killed last year. Using drones, workers can inspect power lines and downed electric lines more safely.

We offer a variety of services, including:

The advent of unmanned aircraft technology represents perhaps the most seismic change in aviation in our lifetimes. We may be witnessing the most transformational opportunity since the days of theWright brothers.

There is still much to be done. The FAA’s rules are far from perfect. And their relatively limited scope means that more work remains to realize the potential that unmanned aircraft hold for a variety of innovative applications, such as urban package delivery and operations beyond line of sight. These are still the early days of commercial drones, and we should anticipate many more historic days to come. For now, however, we can take a moment to celebrate that a new era of commercial drone operations has been cleared for takeoff.

NASA is ready to spend “on the order of $30 million” to assist that first private mission to Mars. Landing NASA’s own stuff inside the capsule is another story.

“We’ve got to demonstrate we can safely land on Mars, which we know is hard, using a technique that he’s going to try,” says Jim Green, head of NASA’s Planetary Science Div.The technique—supersonic retropropulsion—is the odds-on favorite for landing the heavy payloads that would be needed to support humans on the Martian surface. The combination of heat shields, parachutes and retro-rockwww.okeefeceramics.com ets used for the current generation of landers will only work with www.okeefeceramics.com ISO 9001: 2008 Quality Management System ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System payloads weighing about a ton. But exploration planners believe a human outpost will need habitats and supplies to arrive in 20-ton loads, and the “sky-crane” hovering retro-rocket platform that lowered Curiosity to the surface in the famous “7 min. of terror” will not work with payloads that big. Maybe supersonic retropropulsion—turning a big rocket engine downward and lighting it up as a brake—will do the trick.

SpaceX already uses supersonic retropropulsion to land Falcon 9 first stages back on Earth after using them to send cargo toward the International Space Station and satellites to geostationary orbit. NASA monitors those landings with aircraft-mounted infrared cameras and shares the data with SpaceX. Now the space agency wants to conduct similar research at Mars, perhaps even turning Curiosity’s cameras to the pink skies and using

In return, it has promised to help SpaceX with deep-space communications and planetary protection. Privately, the NASA team that prepared the unfunded Space Act agreement setting out the terms of the public-private collaboration found the risk of an unsuccessful Red Dragon landing after launch in 2018 “high” and noted there was “insufficient data to properly assess” the chances of success. Even so, according to an internal document prepared late last year, NASA identified 62 payload options for SpaceX missions to Mars in 2018 and beyond, including 20 for the 2018 opportunity. None was found ready to fly, and none had funding. Among the candidates identified for 2018 is a prototype Mars helicopter to provide stereo color images of surface targets at 10 times the resolution available from orbit, a “Rover Environmental Monitoring Station” to transmit “daily and seasonal reports” on weather and ultraviolet radiation at the surface and a group of atmospheric-dust sensors. Also on the list is a compressor developed for the “Moxie” In Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) oxygen-recovery experiment planned for the 2020 rover that would feed the dust sensors “if not integrated with [the] SpaceX ISRU plant.” SpaceX apparently agreed NASA would not send payloads on the first Red Dragon flight to Mars, although Musk says he wants to continue flying to Mars in all subsequent launch windows, which come every 26 months. “SpaceX sees any payload as a low priority for 2018,” the internal

document states. The Dragon vehicle SpaceX hopes to land on Mars (see illustration) would weigh about 6 tons, and Musk says, “if things go according to plan, we should be able to launch people probably in 2024, with arrival in 2025.” The early flights will require the 27-engine Falcon Heavy, which Musk says should have its first flight by year-end. The company’s website lists its planned payload capability as 29,980 lb. to Mars, with a $90 million commercial pricetag. While the Falcon Heavy will be “the most powerful rocket on Earth,” Musk says, the vehicle that will launch human colonies will be larger. He promised to give details in September. Meanwhile, NASA says it will continue to watch near-term developments in Musk’s ambitious plans. “If he can demonstrate he can land safely, I’m all in.We’ll start working with him on payloads,” says Green. Reed’s Precision Machine (RPM), located in picturesque Logan, Utah, is the epitome of a family run business that continues to evolve. Reed Bindrup, who turned 85 as we went to print, started the business nearly a half century ago, in 1968.Though he plans to slow down some time in the future, he still comes to work at the business each day for about 8 hours! You can immediately appreciate the work ethic Reed installed in his family. The company is exceeding industry statistics for family-run businesses; according to The Family Firm Institute, only about 30% of family run businesses survive into the second generation, and 12% are still viable into the third generation. Not only is RPM surviving, it is thriving. Sons Shawn, Brian and Dave grew up in the business, and they bought Reed out more than 20 years ago. (Shawn and Brian are close in age - just 18 months apart, and brother Dave is a few years younger.) Shawn’s wife Tiffany and his four sons are integral members of the RPM team, and though Brian and Dave’s children are younger, they are now beginning to participate in the business when they are not in school. From the small shop that Reed opened for business with two machines, a manual mill and a lathe, RPM has evolved into a world class manufacturing entity with the latest in technology. It is housed in a 30,000 square foot facility, and it employs a team of 38. The company provides high-quality parts delivered on time, at competitive prices. In their words, “We have the resources, in machines and manpower, of a large manufacturer with the flexibility of a small job shop.” Some of RPM’s customers formally rate them, and they are an ‘A’ supplier in quality and on-time delivery. Their quality department

is staffed with 2 full time inspectors who are able to check parts with the most rigorous tolerances, using their state-of-the-art CMMs, Optical comparators and gages. All 3 Bindrup owners are not just experienced machinists — in fact all earned their degrees in Business/Production Management from Utah State University.Today, each brother specializes in a specific area of expertise, and their roles all include business management (front office), customer interaction (sales), and machining, which they continue to do on a daily basis. It isn’t often that a small manufacturing entity specializes in both machining and fabrication, but this is exactly what RPM does. They offer Mill, Lathe, Weld, Saw, Laser Etching and fabrication, all done in house. They can manufacture both metals and high technology plastics, which Shawn says are used by their medical, food processing and electromechanical component customers. RPM also supports customers in the automotive, aerospace, and industrial industries. And while the majority of RPM’s customers are located in Utah, they support customers throughout theWestern United States, in CA, AZ, ID,WY, NV and MT, and they even ship products to customers in Ohio and on the East Coast. RPM offers the newest generation of milling techniques and processes. In addition to skilled machinists, the company has a very high accuracy 5-axis machine, a horizontal machine, and traditional 4-axis and 3-axis vertical machining centers that are great for prototyping and for production. The company utilizes the best in software to run the business, including: MasterCam,

its employees the ability to go to school for ongoing training, at RPM’s expense. The 3 Bindrup owners recognize the importance of regularly investing in new machine tool technology for their customers.Their CNC milling capability is impressive – with 15 machining centers, including a Mazak VARIAXIS 500-5X, a fully integrated 5-axis VMC with a 2-pallet changer system. Last year RPM added their first horizontal machining center, a Mazak HCN-5000-III and, in less than a year, they added a 12 station Palletech Manufacturing Cell to this machine. The Palletech system allows RPM to have parts/fixtures ready to go, and allows for extended unattended operations. Also, just this last month, they added another MazakVCN-430B-II. SolidWorks, CAD Systems, MCOSMOS CMM Software and JobBOSS. Shawn says, “Our machining flexibility allows us to serve a broad base of customers, from those who want low run, high accuracy prototypes to those requesting high run, high tolerance parts. Additionally, we can machine a wide range of sizes, from very small parts, to large diameter hubs & rings, to plates up to 48” x 62”.” Many of RPM’s customers come to them for specialty plate work. Shawn says, “We’ve developed systems for plate work that allow us to handle large, medium, or small plates by using various restraining and tie-down techniques.” The Bindrup owners are all advocates of education, and they draw from the engineering program at their alma mater, Utah State, to bring in new talent and to support training of our next generation in manufacturing. The company also offers

Clark Smith commented, “It is always rewarding for us to see a company moving forward with higher technology machine tools and be more efficient and more competitive in this global economy. You can’t stand still for too long these days.” The Bindrups have worked with Clark Smith, owner of Smith Machinery, for more than 20 years now, and they continue to purchase their superior Mazak machine tools from Smith Machinery. Shawn says, “Smith Machinery and Mazak have a service model that is unlike anything else I have seen in the industry. we also have the choice for direct support from Mazak’s two local service technicians.” He continued, “We appreciate this model of double-coverage, and we always get service team members who are highly trained.” David Soares, pictured on the previous page with Shawn, supports RPM for Smith Machinery today. Shawn says, “David does a great job, and since we have worked with Clark for so many years, we appreciate the regular contact and support we get directly from him. Smith Machinery always goes above and beyond for their customers.” RPM’s customers are a testament to their business. Here is what just a couple have to say about them. “Reed’s Precision Machine is one of the premier machine shops in Cache Valley and in the Intermountain area. Their expertise is matched by very few others. When I order parts from Dave Bindrup and his excellent staff, I know without a doubt that the parts will be accurate when delivered. Besides the quality that always comes with their products, the entire office staff and machinists are always friendly and extremely helpful. When our needs are urgent, RPM always comes through when we need them to.” Mark W. “As Purchasing Manager for one of the top roller coaster and amusement ride manufacturers in the world, I have worked with Reed’s Precision Machine for the past 13+ years. PREP TIME WILL NEVER BE THE SAME AGAIN...

Why Investment In Space Companies Is Heating Up It used to be that the only way to get to outer space was through the government. Those days are long gone, as the commercial space industry becomes increasingly crowded with companies geared toward such diverse goals as launching small satellites and mining the moon for minerals. This has made the commercial sector increasingly active for investors. A January report from aerospace consulting firm the Tauri Group found that space start-ups have attracted more than $13.3 billion of investment, including $5.1 billion of debt financing, since 2000. Nearly two-thirds of that investment funding has come in the last five years.

The Times spoke with Chad Anderson, managing director of Space Angels Network, about the growing interest and what’s next for the industry. Space Angels Network is a New York-based investor in early-stage private space companies, with virtual offices in Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco, Zurich, Hong Kong, Stockholm and London, and investor members all over the world. Chad Anderson is managing director of Space Angels Network, an early-stage investor in private space companies. The investor group has completed deals with outfits like Planetary Resources, a Redmond, Wash., company that intends to mine asteroids for minerals, and Planet, a San Francisco firm that launches small satellites to gather images of the Earth. The typical investment is $500,000 to $1 million. Here is an edited excerpt. It seems like every few months a new commercial space company makes its debut. What’s driving that? Low-cost access to space, hands down. All of the growth has come, really, over the last 10 to 12 years, so in my mind, it’s all riding on the back of SpaceX. In 2009, they had their first successful launch,Virgin [Galactic] got their first significant funding, and it was sort of on from there. I think that people look at SpaceX and its lower prices and that is a big piece of the puzzle. But another piece that I think people overlook is that they simply publish their pricing. They say, ‘Here’s this rocket, here’s how much cargo we can carry to what orbit and here’s how much it costs.’ That really changed the game and so once there was access to space and you knew the price of it, suddenly people could say, ‘Oh it cost me $200,000 to launch my small satellite. I could build a business from that.’ Tell me about the origin of Space Angels Network.

We’ve been around since 2007.The idea then was to bring some credibility to the sector. We started off as a typical angel group and a handful of successful businesspeople that had put money in space ventures, and they did some good work to build credibility through those formative years. As the industry has ramped up, we have grown into it. We went from 20 members in 2012 to 220 today. It’s really 100% year-over-year growth in

membership for the last 3 years. What do you look for when investing in companies? We’re invested in 34 companies to date and we look for a lot of things that a typical angel or VC [venture capitalist] would look for. Space is a high-tech industry, but we’re still looking for really great teams, really big bold ideas, people that can work effectively in a dynamic landscape. We’re looking for people with ambitious business plans, but a practical route to near-term revenue. I think a common misconception is that space has really long development times and is really capital intensive, but I’m not so sure that’s true. I think that’s true probably for launch companies but there’s a lot of different companies in space, from satellites to software to observation to other things, that’s less true for.

Are there particular areas of interest? It’s a dynamic maturing market, there’s a lot going on. And we really look at it ... in sort of three geographical regions –terrestrial, in-space and planetary. It’s really based on where the value is directed. So terrestrial is like launchers and satellites. Most of the benefit is for Earth. In-space are things that are built or manufactured for space in space. And then planetary markets provide value to other surfaces like the moon and Mars, which are getting more interesting. Space Angels has invested in that entire spectrum. There’s a lot of interest from VCs in the terrestrial markets because those are existing markets that are being disrupted. There’s no question about “Is somebody going to pay for this thing?” because they are. It’s more “Are there entrepreneurs doing this better, faster, cheaper?” Space Angels Network recently invested in Astrobotic Technologies, a company competing for the $30-mil-

lion Google Lunar X Prize, that intends to take payloads to the moon. Why return to the moon? We landed but we didn’t do much. There’s a ton of interest in spending more time on the moon compared to 24 hours at a time. I think that there’s a lot of opportunities for infrastructure development. People have referred to it as the eighth continent, and there’s a lot of resources on the moon that can be used to go deeper into space. Getting out of the Earth’s gravity is 99% of the issue. If you can launch from the moon ... it doesn’t take much fuel or energy to get anywhere, so you can basically explore the solar system from that point. Where do you see the commercial space industry going in the future? The potential is crazy. You talk to people who were around and starting businesses in the Internet boom, and they talk about how similar it feels.I think that the investors and members of Space Angels that are getting involved in this … see it as getting in at the ground floor of a new industry. They’re really looking to invest in the next Microsoft while it’s still a group of guys sitting around a computer lab. A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Rixey said the total could still fluctuate, depending on what happened in the fourth quarter.

He declined to comment on the Gulf sales that have stalled for well over a year now, including a $4 billion deal to sell 36 F-15 fighter jets to Qatar and a $3 billion deal to sell 24 F/A-18E/F Super Hornets to Kuwait, both built by Boeing Co.

Britain’s vote to leave the European Union should not affect its relationship with the United States, or potential future arms sale, Rixey said, citing two large UK arms purchases of Boeing Co (BA.N) equipment announced on Monday. “I’m personally not viewing any impacts to our current relationship with the UK,” he said. Global demand for U.S. helicopters and other weapons remained strong, Rixey said. Rixey has launched 40 separate initiatives to streamline the foreign arms sales approval process and respond to criticism about delays in handling a sustained high volume of requests. U.S. industry officials and top military officials have become increasingly vocal in expressing concerns about delays in approving fighter jet sales to U.S. allies in the Gulf and other deals. Rixey said he was working closely with industry officials to understand their concerns, but it was important to look at each case individually. He said his agency does not make policy determinations, but simply facilitates sales once they are

“Anything that is in foreign policy review is actually part of the deliberate conversation,” Rixey said. “When we get stalled there, the system is not broken, but actually acting as intended. We’re having a debate about foreign policy.” Rixey urged companies to “take the emotion out of it” and be as specific as possible about their concerns. He acknowledged that increased demand for U.S. weapons was creating strains for the government agencies that must evaluate such requests and then process the resulting contracts. “It’s not broken but it’s certainly burdened, with $47 billion (in arms sales approvals) in FY15, and we’re approaching $40 billion this year,” he said. “We’ve got to make sure that we get better.” A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Pitfalls Seen In Aerospace & Defense Digitization The aerospace and defense industry may be just now embracing digitization of business practices, but already warning signs are emerging, according to a new report from management consulting services company Accenture. Those signs include the growing challenge of A&D science and engineering talent being pulled away from legacy A&D companies to more digitally advanced aerospace startups and Silicon Valley-oriented high-tech industries, according to John Schmidt, global managing director for Accenture’s A&D business. Others are the rise in the number of cybersecurity breaches—39% of A&D executives report the number of privacy and security breaches has doubled over the past two years— plus the “unprecedented” volumes of complex, difficult-to-manage data being produced and transmitted by industry. “This is the digital ‘coming of age’ period for the aerospace and defense industry,” Schmidt tells Aviation Week ahead of a new study on Factories ‘Reshore’ Some the topic. “There will be turbulence and it’s notWork going awayFrom anytime soon. Recycling Metals, Conserving Resources, Since 1961 “This has been building – digital is becoming an answer to the challenges that these companies in aerospace and defense are facing,” he says. Whether its airliner cost pressures on the commercial side of the sector, or the drive for affordability and profitability in a slow-growth defense sector, companies and customers are trying to figure out how to innovate and digitization is becoming one go-to strategy. Yet, the drive to digitalize is only in part to ensure profitability. Companies are turning to digitalization to help address workforce concerns as well. Where once there was fear of a so-called silver tsunami of baby boomer retirements that would hobble A&D, now there is fear over losing talent to other industries. Accenture found that half of the jobs in the participating companies had a digital component. This is projected to grow to nearly two-thirds within the next three years. “The competition for talent is coming from new and different sources,” Schmidt tells Aviation Week. He relayed an experience at a recent Aerospace Industries Association meeting he attended that included representatives from Facebook, a new AIA member. Their participation raised

eyebrows and questions among some veteran participants, according to Schmidt, yet it reinforces Accenture’s findings. Schmidt says, “Not only are they here, they’re competing against you.”

US Air Force Funds Next Advanced Engine Stage The US Air Force has awarded a set of contracts to progress its Adaptive Engine Transition Program (AETP) forward. General Electric Aviation and Pratt & Whitney each received a contract following their work on the previous development program. Both companies received contracts worth $1.01 billion, with a period of performance ending in Sept. 2021. AETP seeks to revolutionize performance in engines used by the Air Force by adding a third stream of air inside the engine. The program’s goal is to “demonstrate 25 percent improved fuel efficiency, 10 percent increased thrust, and significantly improved thermal management,” according to an Air Force release. It is expected that AETP will help drive requirements and capabilities for the service’s next-generation air dominance platform. It is possible that developments from AETP could pour back into the F135 engine design, produced by Pratt, which powers the F-35 joint strike fighter fleet. A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Globalization, Brexit and the Rise of Localization With the passing of Brexit, the British voted for local control of immigration, regulations and the economy – in turn, rejecting globalization. The 2016 U.S. presidential race shows a similar backlash with U.S. manufacturing’s wide support for reshoring and its rejection of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). Even before Brexit and the 2016 election race, international trade had plateaued. Globalization’s peak is no surprise given the inherent economic inefficiencies and environmental damage associated with producing goods or rules far from the point of consumption. In a statement made earlier this year at Davos, AT Kearney, a global management consulting firm, asked“Globalization is Dead: what now?” And in “‘Brexit’ in America: A Warning Shot Against Globalization,” Jeffrey R. Immelt, G.E.’s chief executive, offered an answer – “A localization strategy.” Mr. Immelt said GE’s goal is to achieve “a local capability inside a global footprint.” Localization – production in the market where the product will be consumed – is a strategy increasingly used by many large companies to shorten supply chains and reduce shipping costs. On the reshoring front, Harry Moser, president of the Reshoring Initiative, said that offshoring has slowed considerably. “The bleeding of manufacturing jobs to offshore has already stopped,” commented Moser. Data from the Reshoring Initiative shows that new reshoring, including Foreign Direct Investment, balanced new offshoring in 2015 as it did in 2014. In comparison, in 2000-2003 the United States lost net about 200,000 manufacturing jobs per year to offshoring. U.S. companies, retailers and consumers are, collectively, implementing localization, voting with their dollars.

Localization also yields a green benefit. It reduces world environmental impactsthrough reduced carbon emissions fromproducing in developed countries and from much shortertransport. According to Moser, “We have gone from globalization at any cost to our economy, long-term company sustainability and the world environment to recognizing that via localization, a company often can embrace all of these benefits while maintaining or improving profitability.” The Reshoring Initiative is seeking collaboration and support for development of its Corporate Social Responsibility Estimator (CSRE). The new tool will quantify two key societal impacts of sourcing decisions: on the environment and on the domestic economy. By giving corporations a clearer and more accurate understanding of their decisions’ impacts, we will accelerate the reshoring of manufacturing to the United States, yielding a better outcome for the U.S. economy, the planet and the participating companies. The Reshoring Initiative wishes the British a successful Brexit and encourages U.S. consumers and companies to buy and produce more in-country. Both countries will find that avoiding globalization for its own sake brings economic strength and stability. Tools for better decisions The Reshoring Initiative offers many tools and resources to help compa-

nies make supply chain sourcing decisions. The Reshoring Initiative’sTotal Cost of Ownership (TCO) Estimator™ is the best-known publically available tool for this purpose. It uses advanced metrics that allow users to easily determine the total cost of offshoring by accounting for and understanding the relevant offshoring costs, which include inventory carrying costs, shipping expenses, intellectual property risks and more. www.reshorenow.org About the Reshoring Initiative A 50-year manufacturing industry veteran and retired President of GF AgieCharmilles, Harry Moser founded the Reshoring Initiative to move lost jobs back to the U.S. For his efforts with the Reshoring Initiative, he was named to IndustryWeek magazine’s Manufacturing Hall of Fame in 2010.Additional information on the Reshoring Initiative is available at MailScanner has detected a possible fraud attempt from “www.illinoisreshoring.org”” claiming to be www.reshorenow.org. Casting Your Ballot For The Manufacturing Industry This year has brought some unpredictable election stories, and as the months tick closer to Election Day in November, voters will be focused on major issues of interest and concern. For the sake of our state’s future economy, let’s hope that manufacturing and its growth get attention from voters and candidates. When deciding for whom to vote, whether for president or city council, we need to keep in mind a range of topics that will impact job growth in manufacturing. As Baby Boomers retire, they leave a gaping hole in the workforce, particularly for manufacturing. Over the next decade, nearly 3.5 million manufacturing jobs in the nation will likely need to be filled. This high number is due to both the gap caused by Baby Boomers exiting the workforce, as well as anticipated growth in manufacturing. Finding new workers for the industry is challenging due a long-standing negative perception of manufacturing work environments. Manufacturing jobs were once seen as dirty, dangerous and physically de-

manding. But today’s advanced medical device manufacturing facilities, for example, are high-tech clean rooms, making everything from cardiovascular stents to an artificial pancreas. One avenue for bringing in new workers to the industry is to expose young people and their parents to career opportunities available. Supporting vocational schools is a very important step in increasing the availability of new workers into the industry. Vocational school graduates can fill the pipeline of potential workers if curriculum on manufacturing is integrated into their programs of study. It takes a lot of effort and work to change the perception of manufacturing for the Millennial generation and younger generations to come. It will save hundreds of local manufacturing jobs from going overseas, if we can! Another topic to keep in mind when voting for your chosen candidate is his or her plan for public transportation. A growing number of people are unemployed or underemployed due to the lack of available transportation to commute to and from work on a daily basis. Owning a car is expensive, so we need better public transportation options in order to move workers from where they live to where the jobs are.According to the American PublicTransportation Association, every $1 invested in public transportation generates approximately $4 in economic returns, and every $1 billion invested Continued Next Page

in public transportation supports and creates more than 50,000 jobs. Some communities are getting creative with their transportation solutions, such as pooling money from companies for shuttle buses to transfer employees from train or bus stations to the companies’ job sites. If we want to keep the manufacturing industry growing in our region, we need our workforce to be able to easily commute to manufacturing facilities, which are not always close to commuter rail stations and bus stops. Voters have limited time and focus, and there are other issues that can seem a priority. If we want to keep manufacturing a viable industry in Central Massachusetts, we need advocates at every level of government. Pratt & Whitney, BAE Among Major B-21 Contractors The Air Force has named the seven major contractors who will join Northrop Grumman in building the next-generation B-21 bomber, including the new plane’s engine-maker Pratt & Whitney. Almost five months after the Air Force awarded Northrop Grumman a hotly contested contract to build the secretive long range strike bomber, now called the B-21, Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James gave reporters a sneak peek at the list of major subcontractors on the program during a March 7 briefing at the Pentagon. As many expected, F-35 engine-maker Pratt & Whitney will build the B-21 engine at its facility in East Hartford, Connecticut, James announced. As Defense News reported in November, the decision not to go with GE Aviation for the B-21 engine reflects a departure from history, as GE builds the F118 that powers Nothrop’s B-2 stealth bomber. The other six industry partners named March 7 will work on “airframe or mission systems” for the new plane, James said. These contractors are: BAE Systems, working out of Nashua, New Hampshire; GKN Aerospace in St. Louis, Missouri; Janicki Industries in Sedro-Woolley, Washington; Orbital ATK in Clearfield, Utah and Dayton, Ohio; Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and Spirit AeroSystems in Wichita, Kansas. The Air Force’s decision to release the names of the seven major B-21 contractors is part of an effort to be more transparent and build support for the costly program, James said. The B-21 faces a battle for funding against other Air Force and Pentagon priorities, particularly on Capitol Hill. Earlier this month, the powerful chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, John McCain, threatened to block the program. “The B-2 remained in the shadows for too long, it remained classified — too many details remained classified too long,” James said. “In the case of the B-21, we are leaning forward and we are trying to be more transparent and we are going to continue to do so.” Source: Defense News
