Editors Corner “To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you lived. This is to have succeeded.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson

I remember reading somewhere that it’s not important if you are remembered by people when you are gone, but how you made people feel. In this life I forget more than not, to enjoy the day like it’s my last and to see the sunny side and the funny side of this short life. It’s like Old Mark Twain said, I want to make my vocation my vacation.

We think we are working harder for that dollar than we ever have, and maybe we are, but I remember the people that came before me working 2 to 3 jobs just to better our family’s lives. I think I need to work harder at a lot of things; making a better magazine, improving our U.S. economy by working harder to find things I need that are made in the USA, letting people know what my laughter sounds like, and letting people know what my hand shake feels like.

Mazak Optonics Introduces New 6,000Watt Laser-Cutting Technology Mazak Optonics Corporation has taken its SuperTurbo-X Mark III 2D laser cutting system and made it even more advanced by increasing its power output to 6,000 Watts. This boost allows the system to meet the unique demands of processing thicker mild steel and stainless materials. The STX Mark III system is a flexible, rugged workhorse that offers significant technical advantages and standard features for a variety of material types and thicknesses. Built utilizing Mazak’s proven hybrid platform, the new system’s constantbeam length construction provides uniform cutting across the machine table. Additionally, the STX Mark III utilizes several advanced features found in Mazak’s high-end Hyper Series machines, including intelligent setup functions for automated nozzle spatter removal, a three-station nozzle changer as well as focal point measurement and adjustment capability. These functions are part of the Mazak Opti-Pod, which helps minimize system setup time and extends unat-

tended operation for longer periods of time while still maintaining optimized machining conditions. The STX Mark III also incorporates a Servo Focus Torch and High Accuracy Auto Centering Lens and Nozzle. The servo driven system significantly reduces piercing time, while the lens and nozzle design further reduces setup time and increases pierce, plasma and poor cut sensing to ensure consistent performance over a wide range of materials.Together, these technologies yield a considerable increase in productivity. Mazak Optonics paid special attention to flexibility throughout the design of the STX Mark III, evident in the fact it is available in 4’ x 8’, 5’ x 10’ and 6’ x 12’ table configurations and offers three power output levels: 2.5 kW, 4.0 kW and 6.0 kW. It is also available with a large range of automated material handling systems, including Load/ Unload Cells and Flexible Manufacturing Systems. Until McNerney’s remarks last month, the assumption had been that any new derivative of the 737 would continue to be built in Renton. The Boeing CEO’s statements galvanized political, business and economic development officials in Washington state. Tayloe Washburn, a lawyer appointed in June by Gov. Chris Gregoire to head “Project Pegasus” — the effort to keep the 737 or any successor jet in Washington state — convened the meeting of the Washington Aerospace Partnership (WAP). A letter sent out to invitees described plans to mount “a broad-based, sustained effort to ensure our state has the policies and programs in place that are important to aerospace companies.”

Google To Buy Motorola Mobility Albaugh: ‘Six to eight months’ until Boeing picks 737 site Boeing will deliberate over “the next six to eight months” before deciding where it will build a new version of the 737 single-aisle jet. In Seattle a group of economic-development leaders held the initial meeting for a campaign to persuade Boeing to build the new jet in Renton. Boeing Commercial Airplanes chief Jim Albaugh told a crowd of several thousand employees at the company’s 737 assembly plant in Renton last week that the company will conduct a careful selection process over “the next six to eight months” before deciding where it will build a new version of the single-aisle jet. “We will go through the process and look at all the plusses and minuses. Renton clearly has a lot of plusses,” Albaugh said, according to an internal Boeing news item, responding to workers’ questions raising concern that Renton could lose the 737 work. In Seattle, a group of about 70 business, government and labor leaders met to plan a campaign to persuade Boeing to build the new 737 in Renton. Concern for the long-term future of the plant rose after Boeing Chief Executive Jim McNerney said the company had other options besides Renton for a location to build a newly announced version of the 737 with a next-generation engine. “There would be major investments (needed) in Renton beyond the currently planned production rates,” McNerney said then. “Until we sort that all out, we can’t confirm where we’re going to put it precisely.” A2Z METALWORKER •

NBC Nightly News reported, “Google’s now going to become a manufacturer; they have made a deal to acquire Motorola’s mobile handset business for about $12.5 billion. If this gets approved the deal turns Google, the maker of the android platform into a full blown cell phone maker in direct competition with Apple.” “Google Inc. said that it will pay $12.5 billion for cellphone maker Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc., the biggest acquisition in the Internet search giant’s history and one designed to make it a more formidable competitor to Apple Inc. and its iPhone. The result, said Google’s chief executive, Larry Page, will be more and better smartphones for consumers.”

NASA Uses Solar Power for Jupiter Probe

probe, went as far as the asteroid belt between the orbits of Jupiter and Mars.

NASA’s mission to Jupiter will be solar powered. Its Explorer Juno will be shaped like a windmill with solar panels that would generate its power. It would be the most distant probe to be powered by the sun.

Juno’s three large wings are needed so that it could absorb more sunlight. Jupiter receives 25 times less sunlight than Earth. During the launch, the solar panels are folded. They will unfold once in space and would look like large blades of a windmill. Once Juno reaches Jupiter, it could generate around 400 watts of power. In Earth’s orbit, it can produce 35 times more power.

Juno will travel two billion miles to the outer solar system. It will be launched on Friday morning aboard the unmanned Atlas V rocket. This is just two weeks after NASA’s last space shuttle flight. The journey will cost $1.1 billion. Jupiter is the largest and oldest planet in the solar system. NASA might have discontinued its manned shuttle missions but it is set to launch three astronomy missions in the next four months. The Jupiter mission is the first one and its goal is to learn more about the origins of the planet. Juno will explore the gas-filled planet, which is a lot different than Earth and Mars. If Juno is successful, then it would be a good sign for future solarpowered missions in outer space. Jupiter might just be two planets away from Earth but it is far enough to be considered part of the outer solar system. It would take Juno five years to reach the planet. Juno will be the first spacecraft powered by solar panels to go that far Europe’s•Rosetta, which is a solar A Zaway. METALWORKER 42 • March/April 2011powered comet chasing 2

Coating Technologies Inc., a precision engineered coatings company, was founded nearly 25 years ago by Robbie Barrkman.Today the NADCAPTM accredited company supports customers almost exclusively in the aerospace industry, with their processes approved by Boeing, Honeywell, Raytheon and a variety of other aerospace and defense prime contractors. The company is expert in precision engineered coatings, including;

• Electroless Nickel/ PTFE • Electroless Nickel Plating • Gold Plating • Black Oxide Coating • Passivation • Phosphate Coatings • Masking • Thermal Treatment • Blast Finishing • Paint

Phosphorous matrix creating a true and stable composite. As wear occurs, fresh particles of PTFE are exposed to keep the surface lubricated. This lubrication is available as long as the integrity of the coated layer is intact. With NP3, the innovative engineer can specify surface characteristics that were previously thought to be unattainable. Autocatalytic Nickel plating is a process for depositing a Nickel alloy -- relying on chemical rather than electrical energy. This enables a totally uniform deposit to be applied to a component without the current density problems usually encountered during conventional Nickel plating. A by-product of the chemical reduction process is Phosphorous, which is found in the deposit at concentrations of between 2-14 percent by weight. This Nickel-Phosphorous alloy is in a microcrystalline or amorphous state when deposited.

There are a number of precision coating companies throughout the United States. What differentiates Coating Technologies, Inc. is their NP3 Process. In fact, the company is the original supplier of NP3 in the United States. Robbie licensed the unique process technology in 1987 from an English company that patented it. He owned the right to sell and distribute in all of the Western United States. Robbie was so confident that it would fundamentally change his precision coating business that he sold his private airplane to pay for the license!

What is NP3? NP3 is an autocatalytic Nickel/PTFE (TeflonTM) plating process for low friction surfaces. It combines sub-micron particles of PTFE (Teflon) with autocatalytically applied Nickel/ Phosphorous. The result is a dry lubricated, low friction surface that is extremely hard and resistant to wear and corrosion. The PTFE is evenly distibuted throughout and locked into the Nickel A2Z METALWORKER •

18 • Aug/Sept 2011

NP3 is an evolution of the autocatalytic (electroless) Nickel plating process. With NP3, charged particles of PTFE are introduced into the Nickel plating solution with a blend of surfactants which enable the PTFE to be co-deposited with the Nickel and Phosphorous. This composition incorporates approximately 25% volume of PTFE into the Nickel matrix. Unlike other Nickel/PTFE products, NP3 is a true composite.

What are the benefits of NP3? • HARD, CORROSION RESISTANT SELF LUBRICATION and dimensionally accurate finish. • EXTREMELY CORROSION RESISTANT - a 1 mil (.001) thick coating can withstand a salt spray corrosion test of 100+ hours per ASTM B-117.

• TOLERANCES ARE PREDETERMINED to meet a customer’s specific needs. Parts that are dimensionally undersized can be built up and retrieved rather than scrapped. • THE PROCESS CAN BE SELECTIVELY APPLIED by masking off any zero tolerance areas. • SELF LUBRICATING COATING parts that reciprocate, slide, turn or in any way interface with other parts are prime candidates for this coating. NP3 provides long term lubrication, a great benefit to parts that are inaccessible. • CAN OPERATE IN AWIDE RANGE OFTEMPERATURES - NP3 has been used in a wide spectrum of applications from cryogenic atmospheres to high temperature mold applications. • CAN BE USED IN MANY HOSTILE ENVIRONMENTS - without any degradation. Medical equipment, food processing, firearms, rocket components, aircraft parts, machines, electronic assemblies and a multitude of other sensitive equipment have benefited from the attributes of NP3. • VERY ABRASION RESISTANT - with an as-plated hardness of Rc 35-50. This property alone makes NP3 viable as a coating in high friction or high load applications. With post-plate heat treat, hardness can be elevated into the Rc 68-70 range. Robbie believes in fate and that chance encounters can change your entire direction. 24 years ago, Coating Technologies had just purchased the NP3 license, and Robbie was using NP3 on new, custom and refurbished guns. On a Saturday morning, a young man came into the facility, and asked if Robbie could help him re-assemble his gun. The young man inherited the gun when his father passed away, and was trying to clean it. He found that he couldn’t put it together. While the young man waited for Robbie to assemble the gun, he started reading some of Coating Technologies’ literature. He asked if he could take the literature on NP3, and said that he worked as a materials and processing engineer for Hughes Aircraft (now Boeing). This young man was the catalyst for Coating Technologies entrance into the aerospace market, which represents the lionshare of the company’s business today.

Hear from Coating Technologies’ Customers: “We were having terrible issues with the platers we were using on the East Coast. We make several critical parts for Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin. On a customer visit to Northrop in Chicago, we were telling our customer about the issues we were having with plating - parts with non-coated areas and bubbling -- they recommended Coating Technologies in Phoenix, AZ.

I sent some of our problem (e.g. odd shape) parts to CTI to test them out, and the results were fantastic! Virtually every one of our parts needs plating, and when it requires electroless Nickel, it goes to CTI all the time now. I wish they did more processes so I could send more of my work to them, but I guess that it is good that they do a limited number of processes really well. What you get at CTI is proactive support and superior communication. This just doesn’t happen much in the plating business.”

President, Precision Machine Shop,Tampa, FL “Coating Technologies Inc. (CTI), is one of our major suppliers for Nickel plating of the solenoid parts we manufacture. Their plating is superior and they do a great job for us. Their turn around on parts is very fast, 3-5 days and we don’t have to follow up with them to obtain status on our parts. They are always on time. CTI helps us with daily drop off of parts and over all they do a wonderful job.”

Supply Chain Analyst, Precision Machine Shop, Phoenix, AZ “I have been doing business for over 10 years with CTI, and I think they are wonderful to work with! Due dates are always perfect, they pick up and drop off parts at my facility, and they have excellent follow up. I don’t have to worry about how CTI is going to perform or if parts will be done correctly. They are responsive and proactive. Deliveries are 3-5 days unless I have a rush and they sometimes give me 1-2 day rush deliveries if I need it. These people are fantastic to work with!”

Purchasing Manager, Aerospace Manufacturer “We have been working closely with Coating Technologies Inc. (CTI) since 2000. Ken and his team at CTI do a great job for us! When we request the impossible, they do it.We recently needed some same day turn parts and they took care of us.They pick up and deliver daily and their quality is near perfect. We seldom hear of a return issue and CTI maintains our highest rating for Quality. Our partnership is so good that when we get new employees, part of the training is to tour the CTI facility and have CTI train the new employees about the plating process. They really have their process down!”

A new market insight report from the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) outlines an impressive first quarter (Q1) for U.S. Solar, and significant contributions made by solar technologies on the U.S. economy. The U.S. Solar Energy Trade Assessment is the most comprehensive study of its kind to date, analyzing trade flow and domestic value creation in the U.S. solar industry. The news appears to be all good for the U.S. economy, with total net exports of solar technology reaching $723 million and solar installations earning $2.4 billion in direct value support.

Some of the more interesting details from the report: Solar Systems (wafer and cell) pricing down 15% from Q1 2010. New Solar Installations up 67% from $3.6 billion in 2009 to $6.0 billion in 2010. 2.85 GW of new solar energy installed -- enough to power 570,000 typical homes. 1.1 GW concentrating solar installations currently under construction - enough to power 220,000 typical homes. Industry now boasts over 100,000 jobs (according to SEIA Bureau of Labor Statistics)

Top three solar energy states: California, New Jersey, and Arizona. In spite of the much-needed boost to the U.S. economy, there is concern about stability -- namely, how to implement and maintain a plan with long-term effect. As expected, the report has suggestions for industry leaders and government alike. “We’re pleased that the solar industry is helping to reduce the U.S. trade deficit through significant exports of solar energy products. We are seeing investments in U.S. manufacturing in areas of the country hit hard by the recession - Tennessee, Michigan, Ohio and others,” said Rhone Resch, president and CEO of SEIA. “But we’re concerned that there is a lack of stable, long-term federal policies in the U.S. amidst an increasingly competitive global marketplace. Even modest federal policies like expanding the 48c manufacturing tax credit can help the U.S. solar industry remain one of the few sectors of our economy that is a net exporter, while creating tens of thousands of jobs.” A2Z METALWORKER •

Western Sintering Company Inc. is the Northwest Leader in Powder Metallurgy. An ISO9001:2008 Certified Company With Great Processes That Can Run 24/7, Lights Out. Sintering; a very hot process, used in the making of parts for many different industries, holding high dimensional accuracy and repeatability over tens of thousands of parts. Powder metallurgy: Is a process for making structural metal parts by pressing metal powder into a tool steel die into it’s net shape and then sintering the parts in a sintering furnace to diffusion bond the metal particles together to form a solid part. A simple example of sintering can be observed when ice cubes in a glass of water adhere to each other.

This process can be found as early as 1906 when English engineer A. G. Bloxam registered it in 1906 for the first patent on sintering powders using direct current in vacuum. The primary purpose of his inventions was the industrial scale production of filaments for incandescent lamps by compacting tungsten or molybdenum particles. The applied current was particularly effective in reducing surface oxides that increased the emissivity of the filaments. Fast forward to ~1943, and let’s see how Western Sintering Inc. started. John Rector, Western Sintering’s founder grew up in a college town. He earned his machine shop merit badge with the machine shop instructor at the University of Illinois. The instructor invited the 5 Boy Scouts to come to his facility on Saturdays if they wanted to learn more. The only one to accept the offer was Johnny Rector. Then at the young age of 26 John Rector was leading a dozen tool and die makers at the DuPont Plant in Kansas City. They made tools to form 16mm cannon cartridges for the war. He received his first promotion because he could do mathematical square roots in his head. DuPont sent him out to the “Manhattan Project”, a secret weapons plant in the Eastern Washington desert. He arrived on his Harley Davidson. Here, he designed the process to sinter aluminum-boron, which was control rod material for the historic B Reactor. Later; It was the sintering process that captured his attention. Rather than machine parts, John learned he could just press powder into shapes and sinter them.Western Sintering became his new life’s work. The facility moved from the family basement to 28 acres, and expanded from one building to three. Sintering furnaces are now fully automated with complete robotics and operate 24-7. A2Z METALWORKER •

Today Western Sintering is an ISO 9001:2008 Certified Company, a privately held corporation with shares being held primarily by the Rector family and a few private investors.WSC Inc. maintains many PMT ( Powder Metallurgy Technologist ) Certified Employees and continues the tradition of sintering Powdered Metal in a state of the art facility, managed by long-term employees and Western Sintering alumni. Rooted in the school of Western Sintering, Jeff Wood President, with over 29 years of tenure and Dave Morasch Product Development Manager, with over 15 years of tenure were both trained by the experts at Western Sintering. Mike and Bob Rector were those experts. John’s Nephew Mike R e c t o r, w o r k e d closely with Jeff when he came aboard in 1982, fresh out of machinist school and helped Jeff become the Chief Tool and Die maker for WSC Inc. Jeff maintained this position for 10 years and continued to learn every facet of the business under Mike and Bob Rector’s direction. In 1990 Jeff went back to school, thirsty for continuing his education, and though he had a wife and two boys to help his wife raise, Jeff attained his Mechanical Engineering Degree from Washington State University in 2000. He credits his wife and kids for their support in helping him juggle a full time job, family, and school. In 2008 Jeff was promoted to President while Mike Rector has now become Vice President and Bob Rector has now become Chairman of the Board. The other side of this dynamic duo is Dave Morasch. Mike Rector, former President and John Rector’s nephew, worked very closely with Dave when he came aboard in 1996, a graduate from the University of Idaho. Dave worked as an intern while working for his Industrial Technology degree, (and minor in Business) under Mike’s supervision and mentoring. In 1996 Dave was looking for a job and at that time there was a Production Manager job opening. Dave and Mike talked and came to terms. Dave was extensively trained by Mike, Bob and the rest of the Western Team to succeed in this new role as Production Manager.

Dave worked hard at this for 10 years and also learned every facet of the business. Dave now works at the helm along side Jeff and has been a great asset to the management team. Both are PMT certified and Dave has served two terms on the Board of Directors of the APMI (American Powder Metallurgy Institute).

The mixed powder is then pressed in forming dies using up to 100,000 p.s.i. to mold t h e p ow d e r into structural par ts. Multiaction tooling is utilized along with high-speed robots to perfect the WSC Inc. process. Compaction results are statistically monitored for ISO 9001:2008 reporting. The compacted parts are robotically placed in, and out of the 12-zone, high temperature furnaces for the sintering process. These WSC Inc. robots perform the loading and unloading duties to keep WSC Inc. at the cutting edge of World Class Manufacturing.

Today Western Sintering remains strong, well managed, and maintains a diverse customer base. WSC Inc. owns their property, building, and machinery, and maintains a healthy and green work environment. Some of WSC Inc. employees have over 30 years of tenure; the newest employees have over 10 years with the company. When management was asked about the company goals, WSC Inc. Management said “The goal of the company is to strive for excellence through continuous improvement the informal goal is to keep a sense of humor, to grow personally, to enjoy life and work, at its best. The Western Sintering business model is one of automation and processes. WSC Inc. parts are tooled to perfection, with very tight tolerances. This is how WSC Inc. makes it work so well: First the WSC Inc. Team blends certified raw metal powders to the required alloy specifications.

This intricate sintering process allows high tolerance parts to be finished with out machining. Parts are carefully, slow cooled after sintering, then finished to Customer specifications. The WSC Inc. Team inspects finished pieces and records data to insure that the parts meet customer requirements. So, let’s recap; Western Sintering gives you World Class Customer Service & Quality, Expert Engineering Assistance, In House Tooling, High Temperature Sintering, Complete High Tolerance Parts with all Secondary Processing, Bar Coding, CPKs (Statistical Control Data), JIT (Just in Time Delivery), ISO 9001:2008, Solutions in many materials including; Iron, Steel, Stainless Steel, Copper Infiltrated Steel, High Conductivity Copper, Brass, Bronze, Invar, Coated Powders, with Certified PM Technologists on staff. Here’s what some of Western Sintering Customers have to say about their favorite supplier: “After moving up to Idaho, one of the goals was to locate good, local suppliers to support our production. It’s been about 3+ years now, since finding Western Sintering, and we feel they are one of our strongest companies in the field they reside in. We know they have a methodology in their engineering of tooling, quality put into the tooling, and both items show in the end result of the finished part. Their experience in powder metals is unsurpassed and helps to educate us as well. We’re a Lean Manufacturing company, needing to pull inventory on demand. Western already shares the philosophy of build/hold in order to accomplish this, making themselves available for anything that might arise. Not to forget their customer service – just as important as everything else – I wish I could duplicate the service they provide in the way they provide it to all of my other suppliers. I would definitely recommend, and have recommended Western to others.” Purchasing Lead – for a leading Manufacturing company in Idaho. Western Sintering is by far our favorite supplier for so many reasons. Not many of our suppliers work so hard to understand our processes and our customer’s needs, but this element in their service is what givesWestern the edge over their competition. Because the whole team atWestern Sintering so closely understands their customer’s needs, they can continuously improve quality, communication, delivery time, and even cost. It’s extremely refreshing to work with a company so dedicated to customer service. Without Western’s willingness to go the extra mile, our company could not be as successful as it is today. I’m so glad their getting this kind of recognition! They’ve worked very hard to build up a sterling reputation. And while I know their efforts weren’t for the glory, it’s great to see them rewarded in this way. The Western Sintering team rocks! Simple as that. Weapons Control System (TTWCS), a critical system that integrates the launch hardware and software to provide weapon control for variants of the Tomahawk Land Attack Missile. The Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) exercised an option valued at $13 million on an existing software development contract to sustain TTWCS. The total contract value could reach $50.2 million if the three remaining options are exercised. “Lockheed Martin has a long history of technical excellence and will continue to be a key partner in supporting the Tomahawk Weapons System and our fleet warfighters,” said Captain Chris Flood, Tomahawk Program Manager. “Over the decades, Lockheed Martin has worked closely with the Tomahawk Weapons System program office in the evolution of Tomahawk, often the first weapon employed when our nation goes to combat,” said Jim Quinn, vice president of C4ISR Systems. Under this contract, Lockheed Martin will continue to maintain and sustain TTWCS, one of three major components that comprise the Tomahawk Weapons System. Lockheed Martin will also provide the software development, systems engineering, software and hardware deployment support needed to upgrade TTWCS, as well as any management required to continue the system upgrades to address significant hardware, software, and interoperability

obsolescence issues. Ship classes programmed for the Tomahawk capability include all Navy cruisers, all Navy destroyers and all attack and guided missiles class submarines. Integration of the Tomahawk Weapons System with these various launch platforms provides the fleet with an enhanced capability to satisfy the Navy’s vision elicited in Sea Power 21, specifically the Sea Strike pillar. Additionally, the Tomahawk Weapons System provides the United Kingdom’s Royal Navy the same firepower capability to its Astute and Trafalgar class submarines under a Foreign Military Sales program. Lockheed Martin has supported all versions of the Tomahawk Weapons Control System. As part of the Tomahawk System Development Activity, Lockheed Martin, together with Navy labs in Dahlgren,Va., Newport, R.I., and Port Hueneme, Calif., helps maintain current fleet released products and develops new products that address emerging fleet priorities. Boeing’s Albaugh wants to upgrade 737, 777 and 787

TVT DIE CASTING

Boeing is developing a less-expensive reengined 737 that will free up cash to develop a larger 787.

As an engineer, Boeing Commercial Airplanes CEO Jim Albaugh would have preferred to build a new airplane

But he said that the decision to re-engine will be better for customers, who want a replacement 737 sooner, and it will free up funds to advance two other Boeing models, the 777 and 787. Albaugh was speaking at the Jefferies 2011 Global Industrial and A&D Conference, along with many other top executives talking about their companies.Albaugh clarified earlier statements that the crux of the 737 decision rested on how to make the volumes needed, up to 60 a month.

ISO 9001:2008 Certified

“The issue was that nobody could tell us the production system to build 50 or 60 all-composite airplanes a month,” he said. Waiting to figure that out would have pushed delivery of the airplanes into 2021 or 2020, and customers did not want to wait that long. “They want certainty, more efficient airplanes, and they want them now,” he said. He added that he’s convinced that the necessary technology for a new aircraft exists now. “As an engineer, I really wanted to do the new small airplane, and the technology existed to do it,” he said, adding that people had asked if he was certain Boeing could reduce fuel burn 20 percent over the current 737 model. “We just did it on 787, and taking those technologies, and some other technologies that have matured over the last seven or eight years, we could have built an airplane that would have been more than 20 percent more efficient compared over the 737ng,” he said. He added that he’s convinced that a re-engined 737 will be more efficient than the A320neo, a re-engined version of the narrow body A320. “By re-engining, we will have a plane that’s much more capable and much more efficient than the A320 neo; just as the 737ng is more efficient than the A320 classic, we’ll maintain the advantage on the narrow body,” he said. Alluding to the cost of re-engining the 737, which analysts have put at about $1.5 billion to $2 billion, compared to $10 billion for a new plane, Albaugh suggested that part of the re-engine decision was driven by Boeing’s own need for funds. “It will free up a lot of R&D money to do things with the 777 to make sure it continues to be the most capable airplane, and it gives us the money and wherewithal to do another variant of the 787, the 787-10, that will be a simple stretch,” he said. Suggesting that re-engining is also in the cards for the 777, Boeing’s largest wide body aircraft, Albaugh said, “We believe that with a re-engine, we will maintain the position we have on the narrow body, and we think when we do a 777-X, if and when we do it, it will be much more efficient than the [Airbus] A350-1000.” Referring to the 787’s production delays, and the effort to increase production rate from the current two monthly to 10 monthly by 2013, Albaugh said there’s much more efficiency to be squeezed out of the system as workers get used to working with composites. “They’re looking at the work for the first time; we’ve never built an all-composite airplane ... there is learning we have to go through,” he said. “I’m an engineer; I have had a lot of jobs in engineering program management and production, I understand what the mechanics are up against. tools we have in the factory are not as good as they should be. I think we can make them more efficient, I think we can do a lot to make mechanics much more efficient than they are today.” Albaugh said he expects Boeing will receive FAA type certificates for both the 787 and 747-8 this month, to start deliveries in September. He said the 787’s last testing will finish in August.

Nanosys Wins DOE Grant Nanosys, Inc. announced that the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded it funds to refine and bring to scale its SiNANOdeTM materials for the automotive market. These innovations will enable Electric Vehicles (EVs) to travel 300 miles on a single charge. In addition to the primary DOE award of USD 4.8 million, approximately USD 6 million will be spent, through sub-awards and matches by the DOE and Nanosys, in the development and commercialization of advanced material technologies and manufacturing in the United States.

through targeted programs aimed at increasing vehicle efficiency. DOE’s comprehensive approach is aimed at creating new innovations throughout the vehicle, including high capacity electric vehicle batteries and components that should significantly exceed existing state-of-the-art technologies in terms of performance and/or cost. The agency has set a target for bringing the cost of lithium-ion batteries down to USD 250/kWh and increasing capacity to 300 miles per charge for the next generation of EVs. In recent tests, Nanosys’ SiNANOdeTM anode material has doubled capacity while providing breakthrough charge/discharge cycle life improvements. Nanosys will use the DOE funds to accelerate development through purchases of additional equipment and the hiring of additional staff. “The Department of Energy is investing in new advanced technologies that will significantly improve vehicle fuel economy, save consumers money, and create skilled jobs for Americans,” said U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu in a DOE press release. “Investments in the next generation of autos will strengthen our economy and lead to a more fuel-efficient, clean energy future.” In addition to EVs, Nanosys is currently working with domestic and international battery manufacturers to improve lithium-ion battery capacity using SiNANOdeTM in batteries for laptops and tablets, smart phones and other electronic devices.

Science Applications International Corp.Supports Mine Resistant Ambush Protected All-Terrain Vehicles SAIC was awarded a $29,348,146 firm-fixed-price level-of-effort contract. The award will provide for the procurement services to install underbody installation kits on Mine Resistant Ambush Protected All-Terrain Vehicles in Afghanistan. Work will be performed in the United States, and Afghanistan, with an estimated completion date of July 19, 2012. One bid was solicited, with one bid received. The U.S. Army Contracting Command, Warren, Mich., is the contracting activity (W56HZV-09-A-0003).

“We are honored the DOE has selected Nanosys for this grant,” said Jason Hartlove, president and CEO of Nanosys. “The future of a clean energy economy depends on increased adoption of electric and hybrid electric (PHEV) vehicles. Until such vehicles are able to achieve substantial operating range on a single charge with the economics of combustion vehicles, acceptance will be limited to early adopters. The commercialization of architected material solutions like SiNANOdeTM provide the breakthroughs needed to progress on the path to achieving those goals.”

General Atomics Awarded Contract to Manufacture Superconducting Magnets

We’ve been passionate about Waterjet for years. At Flow, in 1979, Dr. Mohamed Hashish invented the abrasive waterjet...

...though his passion started well before then.

Today he continues to develop breakthrough waterjet solutions with an equally passionate team of experts at Flow.

Our passion for waterjets, years of experience, and dedication to our customers drives us. Waterjet is our life. Driven by passion. Inspired by you.

General Atomics was awarded a subcontract by UT-Battelle, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, home to the US ITER Project Office, and funded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science, to produce seven superconducting magnets, six of them to be configured as the Central Solenoid for the ITER Tokamak fusion experiment. ITER is an experimental facility that aims to demonstrate the feasibility of fusion energy for the commercial power grid. The goal is to produce fusion power that is at least ten times greater than the external power delivered to heat the plasma. ITER is now under construction in southern France as a joint project of the European Union, India, Japan, People’s Republic of China, Russia, Republic of South Korea and the United States. The Central Solenoid is a key system for ITER; it drives 15 million amperes of electrical current in the fusion plasma to help confine it. Each

of the seven Central Solenoid modules GA is to fabricate will contain 6.5 kilometers of superconducting cable, will be four meters in diameter and two meters tall, and weigh 110 tons. The superconducting cable will be provided by Japan. The ITER Central Solenoid will be the world’s largest pulsed superconducting magnet. For this project, GA will employ about 80 engineers and technicians in the San Diego area. Additionally, numerous subcontractors in the United States and Europe will participate. Fusion powers our sun and the stars, and when realized on earth, it will be an ideal source of energy. There is an endless fuel supply on earth to support the production of fusion energy, as well as existing electrical grids to support large-scale electricity distribution. Fusion energy emits no greenhouse gases, is inherently safe, and poses no long-term waste disposal issues. A2Z METALWORKER •

The Machinery & Tooling Specialists in Metal Fabrication

Solyndra LLC, the leading American manufacturer of lightweight, easy to install cylindrical photovoltaic (PV) systems for commercial rooftops, announced the Solyndra 200 Series Metal Roof Solution. The unique non-penetrating adjustable mounting system is designed to meet the additional solar installation challenges posed by metal roofs. Metal roofs make up a significant and growing portion of the large, low-sloped, commercial, industrial and agricultural rooftop markets. “Customers with metal roofs have been excited about the benefits of using our lightweight, non-ballasted and non-penetrating design on metal roofs, but have been in need of a flexible mounting solution to address the wide variety of roof types in the market,” said Brian Harrison, Solyndra’s president and CEO. “Adapted from our proven 200 Series mounting system, the new metal roof mounts require no tools in the assembly process and are adjustable to meet the majority of low-slope metal roof configurations supplied by the industry’s leading metal roof manufacturers.”

FIBER LASERS

We SELL and SERVICE New and Used Machinery 12512 Beverly Park Rd. B3, Lynnwood, WA 98087

The innovative adjustable mount design has no attachments, and uses no tools, allowing Solyndra 200 Series panels to be installed faster than any other standing seam solution on the market today. The mounts are currently available and to date have been installed and tested on metal roofs by ASC Building Products, Bemo USA , Kalzip, Kingston and Gibraltar. Solyndra’s 200 Series products are ideally suited for metal roofs. The low, 13,9 kg/m2 distributed load allows for simple installation without ballast or penetrations in winds up to 208 km/h when installed in accordance with Solyndra’s installation guidelines. Attaching conventional racking to metal roofs often damages the metal roof and could compromise the integrity of the roof. While not required, to maximize power from Solyndra’s cylindrical solar modules roof owners can choose white or reflective, “cool roofs” conserving energy and reducing ambient heating caused by rooftops while generating more power. Metal roofs are often employed on temporary or re-locatable

buildings and Solyndra’s ease of install and simple relocation makes the panels a good solution where the possibility of relocation exists. Solyndra designs and manufactures solar photovoltaic systems, comprised of panels and mounts, for the large commercial rooftop market. Using proprietary cylindrical modules and thin-film technology, Solyndra systems are lightweight and non-penetrating, and the fastest and easiest to install solar panels for rooftop applications. This allows Solyndra to achieve the lowest system installation costs on a per watt basis for the commercial rooftop market. Solyndra manufactures its rooftop solar panels and unique greenhouse solar system in the United States and is headquartered in Fremont, California. Solyndra designs and manufactures proprietary cylindrical modules incorporating copper indium gallium diselenide (CIGS) thin-film technology. Our panels employ cylindrical modules which capture sunlight across a 360-degree photovoltaic surface capable of converting direct, diffuse and reflected sunlight into electricity. In the industry sometimes panels are referred to as modules; at Solyndra, each panel is made up of individual modules. A2Z METALWORKER •
