Until McNerney’s remarks last month, the assumption had been that any new derivative of the 737 would continue to be built in Renton. The Boeing CEO’s statements galvanized political, business and economic development officials in Washington state. Tayloe Washburn, a lawyer appointed in June by Gov. Chris Gregoire to head “Project Pegasus” — the effort to keep the 737 or any successor jet in Washington state — convened the meeting of the Washington Aerospace Partnership (WAP). A letter sent out to invitees described plans to mount “a broad-based, sustained effort to ensure our state has the policies and programs in place that are important to aerospace companies.”
Google To Buy Motorola Mobility Albaugh: ‘Six to eight months’ until Boeing picks 737 site Boeing will deliberate over “the next six to eight months” before deciding where it will build a new version of the 737 single-aisle jet. In Seattle a group of economic-development leaders held the initial meeting for a campaign to persuade Boeing to build the new jet in Renton. Boeing Commercial Airplanes chief Jim Albaugh told a crowd of several thousand employees at the company’s 737 assembly plant in Renton last week that the company will conduct a careful selection process over “the next six to eight months” before deciding where it will build a new version of the single-aisle jet. “We will go through the process and look at all the plusses and minuses. Renton clearly has a lot of plusses,” Albaugh said, according to an internal Boeing news item, responding to workers’ questions raising concern that Renton could lose the 737 work. In Seattle, a group of about 70 business, government and labor leaders met to plan a campaign to persuade Boeing to build the new 737 in Renton. Concern for the long-term future of the plant rose after Boeing Chief Executive Jim McNerney said the company had other options besides Renton for a location to build a newly announced version of the 737 with a next-generation engine. “There would be major investments (needed) in Renton beyond the currently planned production rates,” McNerney said then. “Until we sort that all out, we can’t confirm where we’re going to put it precisely.” A2Z METALWORKER •

NBC Nightly News reported, “Google’s now going to become a manufacturer; they have made a deal to acquire Motorola’s mobile handset business for about $12.5 billion. If this gets approved the deal turns Google, the maker of the android platform into a full blown cell phone maker in direct competition with Apple.” “Google Inc. said that it will pay $12.5 billion for cellphone maker Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc., the biggest acquisition in the Internet search giant’s history and one designed to make it a more formidable competitor to Apple Inc. and its iPhone. The result, said Google’s chief executive, Larry Page, will be more and better smartphones for consumers.”

Boeing, Cathay Pacific Announce Order for 12 777s Boeing and Cathay Pacific Airways announced the Hong Kong-based carrier has ordered eight Boeing 777 Freighters and four 777-300ER (extended range) airplanes. The order is valued at $3.3 billion at list prices. With this announcement, Cathay Pacific becomes the 15th customer to order the 777 Freighter and increases its Boeing 777-300ER fleet to 50. “We are very pleased to announce this latest Boeing order, which highlights our commitment to operating a modern and efficient fleet together with a deep commitment to our home city, Hong Kong,” said John Slosar, Cathay Pacific Chief Executive. “The Boeing 777-300ER is a superb aircraft that has already given a significant boost to our long-haul passenger operations, while the Boeing 777 Freighter will improve our freighter operations by delivering improved payload range capability at competitive operating costs.” “The Boeing 777 Freighter, together with the other new aircraft types, will provide us with exactly the right balance in our fleet portfolio through to the end of the decade along with a more efficient and environmentally friendly operation,” Slosar added.

The Boeing Co. Extends Apache Contract Boeing was awarded a $189,211,400 firm-fixed-price contract. The award will provide for the modification of an existing contract to provide 16 AH-64D Apache aircraft and related support. Work has an estimated completion date of Feb. 28, 2014. Raytheon Supports Enhanced Position Location Reporting System Raytheon was awarded a $70,520,000 cost-plus-fixed-fee, indefinitedelivery/indefinite-quantity contract. Work will be performed in Fullerton,

Northrop Grumman Supports Advanced Hawkeye Program NGC has been awarded $795 million in contracts by the U.S. Navy for the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye Program. Under a sole source, firm-fixed price $761 million contract, prime contractor Northrop Grumman will manufacture and deliver five low-rate initial production (LRIP), Lot 3, E-2D Advanced Hawkeye aircraft to the U.S. Navy. NASA Uses Solar Power for Jupiter Probe
probe, went as far as the asteroid belt between the orbits of Jupiter and Mars.
NASA’s mission to Jupiter will be solar powered. Its Explorer Juno will be shaped like a windmill with solar panels that would generate its power. It would be the most distant probe to be powered by the sun.
Juno’s three large wings are needed so that it could absorb more sunlight. Jupiter receives 25 times less sunlight than Earth. During the launch, the solar panels are folded. They will unfold once in space and would look like large blades of a windmill. Once Juno reaches Jupiter, it could generate around 400 watts of power. In Earth’s orbit, it can produce 35 times more power.
Juno will travel two billion miles to the outer solar system. It will be launched on Friday morning aboard the unmanned Atlas V rocket. This is just two weeks after NASA’s last space shuttle flight. The journey will cost $1.1 billion. Jupiter is the largest and oldest planet in the solar system. NASA might have discontinued its manned shuttle missions but it is set to launch three astronomy missions in the next four months. The Jupiter mission is the first one and its goal is to learn more about the origins of the planet. Juno will explore the gas-filled planet, which is a lot different than Earth and Mars. If Juno is successful, then it would be a good sign for future solarpowered missions in outer space. Jupiter might just be two planets away from Earth but it is far enough to be considered part of the outer solar system. It would take Juno five years to reach the planet. Juno will go on an oval orbit around Jupiter’s poles in July 2016, after it travels for 2.8 billion kilometers. Solar power is one of the most viable sources of power for space missions like Juno, which go far from the Earth and still within reach of sunlight.
Oshkosh Corp. Wins Contract Oshkosh, was awarded a $30,463,852 firm-fixed-price contract. The award will provide for the production of 185 Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles and one armor B-kit. This composition incorporates approximately 25% volume of PTFE into the Nickel matrix. Unlike other Nickel/PTFE products, NP3 is a true composite.

Robbie believes in fate and that chance encounters can change your entire direction. 24 years ago, Coating Technologies had just purchased the NP3 license, and Robbie was using NP3 on new, custom and refurbished guns. On a Saturday morning, a young man came into the facility, and asked if Robbie could help him re-assemble his gun. The young man inherited the gun when his father passed away, and was trying to clean it. He found that he couldn’t put it together. While the young man waited for Robbie to assemble the gun, he started reading some of Coating Technologies’ literature. He asked if he could take the literature on NP3, and said that he worked as a materials and processing engineer for Hughes Aircraft (now Boeing). This young man was the catalyst for Coating Technologies entrance into the aerospace market, which represents the lionshare of the company’s business today.

Boeing to boost 737 deliveries to 42 airplanes per month Boeing says it will increase the production rate for its Next– Generation 737 to 42 airplanes per month by 2014. The 737 program currently produces 31.5 airplanes per month and expects to go to 35 per month in early 2012, 38 per month in second quarter 2013, and then to 42 per month in the first half of 2014, according to the company. Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Jim Albaugh says the market outlook for single–aisle jetliners is strong and growing. "Customers are demanding our Next–Generation 737 at an unprecedented rate," according to Albaugh. He cites the popularity of Boeing's new passenger comfort features, noting that since its introduction in May 2010 the new Boeing Sky Interior is specified on more than 80% of new 737 orders. "We have worked very closely with our supply chain and our world– class manufacturing team to ensure we can increase rate in an efficient and responsible fashion," says 737 Program Vice President and General Manager Beverly Wyse. "We believe that many of the capital investments and production system changes made for 38 airplanes
per month will already position us to build 42." More than 280 customers have placed better than 8880 orders for the 737 single–aisle airplane—including more than 5750 orders of the Next–Generation 737. Boeing currently manages a backlog of more than 2100 of the 737 family, according to the company. In an another sign that the narrow–body market is growing, Airbus states that its A320 Family output will also grow to 42 aircraft per month in the fourth quarter of 2012. The A320 family includes the A320, A320neo, A318, A319 and A321.
Rockwell Collins Gets $160M Air Force Contract Aviation electronic systems maker Rockwell Collins said recently it has won a $160 million contract to update communications systems for U.S. Air Force jets that refuel aircraft. The Cedar Rapids, Iowa, company will update the flight management system, displays, data communications and surveillance systems of the KC-10 tankers to meet future air traffic control requirements, Rockwell Collins said in a statement. The new systems will get the tankers to their destinations more quickly and allow them to operate in commercial air space across the globe, the statement said. A2Z METALWORKER •

DTNA has started the current fiscal year in a strong competitive position and expects significant growth in the U.S. truck market, particularly in the sales of trucks in Classes 6 to 8. As a result, original 2011 growth forecasts are being revised upward for the NAFTA region. With the upturn in the economy, DTNA has plans to expand production and fill approximately 1,300 new positions. Freightliner Trucks carried its “Run Smart, Work Smart” theme throughout the booth by emphasizing their on-highway trucks’ overall vehicle efficiency through resale value, durability, fuel efficiency and lightweight packaging.Three 2012 Cascadia® models featuring lightweight specs and new aerodynamic upgrades were on display and included various sleeper and cab configurations. A new market insight report from the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) outlines an impressive first quarter (Q1) for U.S. Solar, and significant contributions made by solar technologies on the U.S. economy. The U.S. Solar Energy Trade Assessment is the most comprehensive study of its kind to date, analyzing trade flow and domestic value creation in the U.S. solar industry. The news appears to be all good for the U.S. economy, with total net exports of solar technology reaching $723 million and solar installations earning $2.4 billion in direct value support.

Some of the more interesting details from the report: Solar Systems (wafer and cell) pricing down 15% from Q1 2010. New Solar Installations up 67% from $3.6 billion in 2009 to $6.0 billion in 2010. 2.85 GW of new solar energy installed -- enough to power 570,000 typical homes. 1.1 GW concentrating solar installations currently under construction - enough to power 220,000 typical homes. Industry now boasts over 100,000 jobs (according to SEIA Bureau of Labor Statistics)

In spite of the much-needed boost to the U.S. economy, there is concern about stability -- namely, how to implement and maintain a plan with long-term effect. As expected, the report has suggestions for industry leaders and government alike. “We’re pleased that the solar industry is helping to reduce the U.S. trade deficit through significant exports of solar energy products. We are seeing investments in U.S. manufacturing in areas of the country hit hard by the recession - Tennessee, Michigan, Ohio and others,” said Rhone Resch, president and CEO of SEIA. “But we’re concerned that there is a lack of stable, long-term federal policies in the U.S. amidst an increasingly competitive global marketplace. Sintering; a very hot process, used in the making of parts for many different industries, holding high dimensional accuracy and repeatability over tens of thousands of parts. Powder metallurgy: Is a process for making structural metal parts by pressing metal powder into a tool steel die into it’s net shape and then sintering the parts in a sintering furnace to diffusion bond the metal particles together to form a solid part. A simple example of sintering can be observed when ice cubes in a glass of water adhere to each other.
This process can be found as early as 1906 when English engineer A. G. Bloxam registered it in 1906 for the first patent on sintering powders using direct current in vacuum. The primary purpose of his inventions was the industrial scale production of filaments for incandescent lamps by compacting tungsten or molybdenum particles. The applied current was particularly effective in reducing surface oxides that increased the emissivity of the filaments. Fast forward to ~1943, and let’s see how Western Sintering Inc. started. John Rector, Western Sintering’s founder grew up in a college town. He earned his machine shop merit badge with the machine shop instructor at the University of Illinois. The instructor invited the 5 Boy Scouts to come to his facility on Saturdays if they wanted to learn more. The only one to accept the offer was Johnny Rector. Then at the young age of 26 John Rector was leading a dozen tool and die makers at the DuPont Plant in Kansas City.They made tools to form 16mm cannon cartridges for the war. He received his first promotion because he could do mathematical square roots in his head. DuPont sent him out to the “Manhattan Project”, a secret weapons plant in the Eastern Washington desert. He arrived on his Harley Davidson. Here, he designed the process to sinter aluminum-boron, which was control rod material for the historic B Reactor. Later; It was the sintering process that captured his attention. Rather than machine parts, John learned he could just press powder into shapes and sinter them.Western Sintering became his new life’s work.The facility moved from the family basement to 28 acres, and expanded from one building to three. Rooted in the school of Western Sintering, Jeff Wood President, with over 29 years of tenure and Dave Morasch Product Development Manager, with over 15 years of tenure were both trained by the experts at Western Sintering. Mike and Bob Rector were those experts. John’s Nephew Mike R e c t o r, w o r k e d closely with Jeff when he came aboard in 1982, fresh out of machinist school and helped Jeff become the Chief Tool and Die maker for WSC Inc. Jeff maintained this position for 10 years and continued to learn every facet of the business under Mike and Bob Rector’s direction. In 1990 Jeff went back to school, thirsty for continuing his education, and though he had a wife and two boys to help his wife raise, Jeff attained his Mechanical Engineering Degree from Washington State University in 2000. He credits his wife and kids for their support in helping him juggle a full time job, family, and school. In 2008 Jeff was promoted to President while Mike Rector has now become Vice President and Bob Rector has now become Chairman of the Board. The other side of this dynamic duo is Dave Morasch. Mike Rector, former President and John Rector’s nephew, worked very closely with Dave when he came aboard in 1996, a graduate from the University of Idaho. Dave worked as an intern while working for his Industrial Technology degree, (and minor in Business) under Mike’s supervision and mentoring. In 1996 Dave was looking for a job and at that time there was a Production Manager job opening. Dave and Mike talked and came to terms. Dave was extensively trained by Mike, Bob and the rest of the Western Team to succeed in this new role as Production Manager.
Dave worked hard at this for 10 years and also learned every facet of the business. Dave now works at the helm along side Jeff and has been a great asset to the management team. Both are PMT certified and Dave has served two terms on the Board of Directors of the APMI (American Powder Metallurgy Institute).
The mixed powder is then pressed in forming dies using up to 100,000 p.s.i. to mold t h e p ow d e r into structural par ts. Multiaction tooling is utilized along with high-speed robots to perfect the WSC Inc. process. Compaction results are statistically monitored for ISO 9001:2008 reporting. The compacted parts are robotically placed in, and out of the 12-zone, high temperature furnaces for the sintering process. These WSC Inc. robots perform the loading and unloading duties to keep WSC Inc. at the cutting edge of World Class Manufacturing.

Weapons Control System (TTWCS), a critical system that integrates the launch hardware and software to provide weapon control for variants of the Tomahawk Land Attack Missile. The Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) exercised an option valued at $13 million on an existing software development contract to sustain TTWCS. The total contract value could reach $50.2 million if the three remaining options are exercised. “Lockheed Martin has a long history of technical excellence and will continue to be a key partner in supporting the Tomahawk Weapons System and our fleet warfighters,” said Captain Chris Flood, Tomahawk Program Manager. “Over the decades, Lockheed Martin has worked closely with the Tomahawk Weapons System program office in the evolution of Tomahawk, often the first weapon employed when our nation goes to combat,” said Jim Quinn, vice president of C4ISR Systems. As an engineer, Boeing Commercial Airplanes CEO Jim Albaugh would have preferred to build a new airplane
But he said that the decision to re-engine will be better for customers, who want a replacement 737 sooner, and it will free up funds to advance two other Boeing models, the 777 and 787. Albaugh was speaking at the Jefferies 2011 Global Industrial and A&D Conference, along with many other top executives talking about their companies.Albaugh clarified earlier statements that the crux of the 737 decision rested on how to make the volumes needed, up to 60 a month.

“The issue was that nobody could tell us the production system to build 50 or 60 all-composite airplanes a month,” he said. Waiting to figure that out would have pushed delivery of the airplanes into 2021 or 2020, and customers did not want to wait that long. “They want certainty, more efficient airplanes, and they want them now,” he said. He added that he’s convinced that the necessary technology for a new aircraft exists now. “As an engineer, I really wanted to do the new small airplane, and the technology existed to do it,” he said, adding that people had asked if he was certain Boeing could reduce fuel burn 20 percent over the current 737 model. “We just did it on 787, and taking those technologies, and some other technologies that have matured over the last seven or eight years, we could have built an airplane that would have been more than 20 percent more efficient compared over the 737ng,” he said. He added that he’s convinced that a re-engined 737 will be more efficient than the A320neo, a re-engined version of the narrow body A320. “By re-engining, we will have a plane that’s much more capable and much more efficient than the A320 neo; just as the 737ng is more efficient than the A320 classic, we’ll maintain the advantage on the narrow body,” he said. Alluding to the cost of re-engining the 737, which analysts have put at about $1.5 billion to $2 billion, compared to $10 billion for a new plane, Albaugh suggested that part of the re-engine decision was driven by Boeing’s own need for funds. “It will free up a lot of R&D money to do things with the 777 to make sure it continues to be the most capable airplane, and it gives us the money and wherewithal to do another variant of the 787, the 787-10, that will be a simple stretch,” he said. Suggesting that re-engining is also in the cards for the 777, Boeing’s largest wide body aircraft, Albaugh said, “We believe that with a re-engine, we will maintain the position we have on the narrow body, and we think when we do a 777-X, if and when we do it, it will be much more efficient than the [Airbus] A350-1000.” Referring to the 787’s production delays, and the effort to increase production rate from the current two monthly to 10 monthly by 2013, Albaugh said there’s much more efficiency to be squeezed out of the system as workers get used to working with composites. “They’re looking at the work for the first time; we’ve never built an all-composite airplane ... there is learning we have to go through,” he said. “I’m an engineer; I have had a lot of jobs in engineering program management and production, I understand what the mechanics are up against. My view is the process and

tools we have in the factory are not as good as they should be. I think we can make them more efficient, I think we can do a lot to make mechanics much more efficient than they are today.” Albaugh said he expects Boeing will receive FAA type certificates for both the 787 and 747-8 this month, to start deliveries in September. He said the 787’s last testing will finish in August.

Nanosys Wins DOE Grant Nanosys, Inc. announced that the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded it funds to refine and bring to scale its SiNANOdeTM materials for the automotive market.These innovations will enable Electric Vehicles (EVs) to travel 300 miles on a single charge. In addition to the primary DOE award of USD 4.8 million, approximately USD 6 million will be spent, through sub-awards and matches by the DOE and Nanosys, in the development and commercialization of advanced material technologies and manufacturing in the United States.

DOE’s comprehensive approach is aimed at creating new innovations throughout the vehicle, including high capacity electric vehicle batteries and components that should significantly exceed existing state-of-the-art technologies in terms of performance and/or cost. The agency has set a target for bringing the cost of lithium-ion batteries down to USD 250/kWh and increasing capacity to 300 miles per charge for the next generation of EVs. In recent tests, Nanosys’ SiNANOdeTM anode material has doubled capacity while providing breakthrough charge/discharge cycle life improvements. Nanosys will use the DOE funds to accelerate development through purchases of additional equipment and the hiring of additional staff. “The Department of Energy is investing in new advanced technologies that will significantly improve vehicle fuel economy, save consumers money, and create skilled jobs for Americans,” said U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu in a DOE press release. “Investments in the next generation of autos will strengthen our economy and lead to a more fuel-efficient, clean energy future.” In addition to EVs, Nanosys is currently working with domestic and international battery manufacturers to improve lithium-ion battery capacity using SiNANOdeTM in batteries for laptops and tablets, smart phones and other electronic devices.

Cessna Delivers 32nd Caravan to Brazil’s Air Force Cessna Aircraft Company, a Textron Inc. company, has completed the delivery of the 32nd Model 208/208B Caravan aircraft to Força Aérea Brasileira, the air branch of the Brazilian armed forces. This delivery completes a contract for nine new Caravans. “It’s really great for us to have one more Cessna 208B Grand Caravan in our fleet. It is an amazing, multi-purpose aircraft with low maintenance cost and our fleet has been extremely useful to our Force,” said Colonel Luzzi, Director of Lagoa Santa Depot, the organization responsible for third-level maintenance of Brazilian Air Force Caravan aircraft. “Cessna is proud to have a highly regarded organization such as the FAB operate the largest fleet of Caravans outside the United States in the world and to put the model’s versatility to use on diverse missions, whether it’s cargo and passenger transport or utilitarian and special mission air operations,” said Bob Gibbs, Cessna’s director of international sales. “Throughout its 25-year history, the Caravan has proven its versatility, offering impressive hauling capacity and reliable performance.” The first FAB Caravan started service in 1987.They are based around the country and perform a variety of roles. The single-engine turboprop Caravan is certified in 100 countries and the fleet of 2,000-plus aircraft has amassed more than 13 million flight hours. It received FAA type certification in 1984 and marked its first customer delivery in 1985.

Fed-X has received an indefinite-delivery/requirements, fixed-price with economic price adjustment contract award. This contract has an overall four-year estimated contract value of $182,508,228. The contract is for cold-chain packing and logistics and international air transportation for primarily fresh fruits and vegetables from the United States West Coast to various Pacific locations in support of the Defense Commissary Agency and Defense Logistics Agency. The scope of work requires the contractor to provide the initial receiving and overpacking of government-procured subsistence, necessary cold-chain maintenance, time-definite door delivery, transportation, timely and accurate intransit visibility, Government Third Party Payment System participation, and customs and agricultural clearance processing. Work will be performed on the United States West Coast and internationally. The performance period for the base year is Oct. 1, 2011 to Sept. 30, 2012, with three one-year option periods from Oct. 1,

General Atomics was awarded a subcontract by UT-Battelle, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, home to the US ITER Project Office, and funded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science, to produce seven superconducting magnets, six of them to be configured as the Central Solenoid for the ITER Tokamak fusion experiment. ITER is an experimental facility that aims to demonstrate the feasibility of fusion energy for the commercial power grid.The goal is to produce fusion power that is at least ten times greater than the external power delivered to heat the plasma. ITER is now under construction in southern France as a joint project of the European Union, India, Japan, People’s Republic of China, Russia, Republic of South Korea and the United States. The Central Solenoid is a key system for ITER; it drives 15 million amperes of electrical current in the fusion plasma to help confine it. Each

of the seven Central Solenoid modules GA is to fabricate will contain 6.5 kilometers of superconducting cable, will be four meters in diameter and two meters tall, and weigh 110 tons. The superconducting cable will be provided by Japan. The ITER Central Solenoid will be the world’s largest pulsed superconducting magnet. For this project, GA will employ about 80 engineers and technicians in the San Diego area. Additionally, numerous subcontractors in the United States and Europe will participate. Fusion powers our sun and the stars, and when realized on earth, it will be an ideal source of energy. There is an endless fuel supply on earth to support the production of fusion energy, as well as existing electrical grids to support large-scale electricity distribution. The innovative adjustable mount design has no attachments, and uses no tools, allowing Solyndra 200 Series panels to be installed faster than any other standing seam solution on the market today. The mounts are currently available and to date have been installed and tested on metal roofs by ASC Building Products, Bemo USA , Kalzip, Kingston and Gibraltar. Solyndra’s 200 Series products are ideally suited for metal roofs. The low, 13,9 kg/m2 distributed load allows for simple installation without ballast or penetrations in winds up to 208 km/h when installed in accordance with Solyndra’s installation guidelines. Attaching conventional racking to metal roofs often damages the metal roof and could compromise the integrity of the roof. While not required, to maximize power from Solyndra’s cylindrical solar modules roof owners can choose white or reflective, “cool roofs” conserving energy and reducing ambient heating caused by rooftops while generating more power. buildings and Solyndra’s ease of install and simple relocation makes the panels a good solution where the possibility of relocation exists. Tesla North America Introduces Model S Want to see Tesla’s Model S and ride in a beta version? You have to have a reservation to purchase one first. Tesla Motors said that in about 10 days, every Model S reservation holder is getting a special invite — to see their car at its future birthplace: the Tesla factory and former NUMMI plant in Fremont. The Palo Alto-based electric vehicle maker said it is also planning to provide rides in Model S beta test vehicles, with select areas of the factory open for tours.
