Editors Corner “If you are willing to do what’s needed instead of what you want to do, there is always opportunity.” This is a quote from an article I wrote this issue, from Van Pilkington of Pilkington Metal Finishing. I think about this inspiring comment. Many of us didn’t do what we dreamed of doing in life. My sister, Christine, is a Psychiatrist, and she recently told me that her dream was to work at a world-re known advertising agency. But after Dad and Mom had just finished paying for her undergraduate education, they apparently said, “we paid for your school and you are now on your own.” I just learned this, but am happy that they cut the financial strings once she completed her undergraduate schooling. Wow, life is an adventure! I never imagined that when I finished college, armed with a degree to teach students in math, that I would be a computer operator, loading tapes at AT&T. Hours were split between day, evening and night shifts. I once did the mileage, and the team and I each walked 8 miles per shift! It wasn’t a great job, but things progressed. AT&T was my first employer, and it took me to sales in Dallas, TX. I subsequently worked 20 plus years at high tech, large companies, including AT&T, Motorola and Intel, and my jobs moved my family from New Jersey to Dallas, back to New Jersey, and then to Phoenix. In my mid-years, I made the jump. Purchasing the legacy A2Z Metalworker for AZ, NV and NM was my chance in a lifetime! When I opened the A2Z Metalworker for CO, UT and ID, I experienced yet a new opportunity, and met more outstanding business owners. Now comes the newest, the edition for Northern CA, OR and WA. And while it is exhausting, it is at the same time exhilarating! My point is that schooling and family pre-conceived notions are just that. Find a niche, do it and do it well. If you don’t love it, find the time, the energy and the courage, to do something different. Or just find a way to change what you are currently doing so that you can truly enjoy it. Let’s face it, work occupies a large percentage of your life. And to Van’s point, find something in your business life that fills a void. Do it well. Be sure that it is helping others. The fun will come. It always does! You will read about some outstanding companies in this issue. I believe this issue is one of our best in terms of really great companies.

Private Jet Travel Stepping Up While private travel by jet was shunned in the prevailing harsh economic times as excessively ostentatious, it is now recovering, showing that the richest people in the world are spending with less inhibition. Argos International, an aviation market research company and Eurocontrol, the organization that manages European air traffic management released data showing the number of business flights grew by 5.5 percent last year in both Europe and the US. This includes business hire, state and celebrity flights. Although private jet travel has yet to return to the levels of 2007, a 9 percent increase in Europe in the year to date suggests luxury flying is back in fashion. Private jet travel became more popular because self-made millionaires and other executives sought flexible schedules and were deterred by security and baggage restrictions. But this market sector sustained a hammering in the recession and was publicly criticized. Particular attention was garnered by flights to Washington by car industry executives to attend hearings regarding industry bail-outs. Flights fell 16 percent from a peak of 779,000 in 2007 to only 652,000 in 2009.The most popular airports are Milan Linate, London Luton, Nice, Geneva, and Le Bourget in Paris, but destinations are increasing Eastern: Turkey, Ukraine, and Russia. Rather than owning a whole airplane, ownership now tends to be fractional – a time-share arrangement. Flights cost around $5,475 per hour for a short-haul trip, or more than twice that for long-haul. Boston Dynamics has been awarded the multimillion-dollar contracts by the US Department of Defense and hopes to build the first prototype in 20 months. The four-legged Cheetah will have a flexible spine, articulated head, and will be able to sprint, take sharp corners, zigzag and reach speeds of 20mph-30mph. The Atlas robot will have a body, two arms, two legs and no head and will be able to walk over rough terrain, fit through tight gaps and crawl on its hands and knees if needed. The prototype will be a more technologically advanced version of the Petman robot, which is used to test out chemical weapons protection suits for the army, according to the Daily Mail. Boston Dynamics president and lead investigator on the project Marc Raibert said the US DoD was not so focused on the ultimate use of the robots. “They’re most focused on developing the technology and seeing what uses they can be applied to,” he added.

Steel-Price Increases Creep Into Supply Chain The Wall Street Journal
says the impact of escalating steel prices in the U.S. is starting to filter through supply chains, with companies that buy and process steel raising their own prices, stockpiling in advance of possible more increases and boosting volume to offset rising costs.

Steelmakers have increased prices six times, for a total increase of 20% to 30%, since November on basic flat-rolled steel, used in everything from cars to toasters, to offset higher input costs of raw materials, such as iron ore and coal. Higher costs for steel, which are expected to continue well into this year, are hitting bottom lines of companies and prompting additional price increases.

Caterpillar Inc., the world’s biggest maker of construction and mining equipment, expects higher sales volumes and possible price increases on its own product to offset higher steel costs which represent less than 20% of its material cost. It also buys materials in advance when it expects prices to rise. Emerson Electric has been increasing prices to its customers, redesigning some products and evaluating production processes to counter higher material expenses, which cost the company twice as much as anticipated and contributed to lower-than-expected profit from the quarter ended Dec. 31. Appliance makers like Whirlpool Corp., too, are feeling the pinch and have announced price rises of 8% to 10%, although those full increases may be hard to pass on without losing market share to foreign rivals.

But for the most part, consumers of automobiles, appliances or utensils won’t feel the brunt of steep steel increases. “We have seen these input prices going up sharply for a period of time, but there have been very little pass-through to final consumer markets,” said IHS Global Insight Chief Financial Economist Brian Bethune.

Companies, he said, have been offsetting the increase in nonlabor costs with higher productivity, which he expects will have increased 4% in the fourth quarter. Moreover, only the most steelintensive products would be affected, and few of those are consumer products.

The biggest impact will be felt by companies whose sole business is buying steel directly from steelmakers and stamping, bending, coating and cutting that steel for other companies, such as car and equipment makers. Steel represents their biggest cost, and they have fewer options to spread higher costs across production.

Some of those companies have been adding to inventory since prices began rising in November in anticipation of further increases. Inventory levels increased to 2.7 months in December, from 2.4 months, according to the Metals Service Centers Institute.

That can be a risky strategy if demand suddenly drops off and they are left with huge inventory, said Bill Hickey, of Lapham-Hickey Steel, a private steel distributor based in Chicago.
“We keep telling customers to not buy more steel than they need,” Mr. Hickey said. “All they would be doing is fuel the problem.” Stockpiling creates artificial demand, which drives up prices.

people. Only 12% of the PMA’s respondents said they had any employees on short time or layoff. The last time that number was lower than 12% in this survey was in October 2007, when only 8% of companies had workers on short time or layoff.

Among Wire-Net’s survey respondents, 56% said they would hire more workers this year, while a scant 4.1% said they planned to reduce payrolls. Those additions would be on top of the new hires made by 51% of the respondents in 2010 — a year in which 17% let employees go, Mr. Colm noted.

Optimism on upswing at industrial companies Crain’s Cleveland Business
Manufacturers’ recent surveys suggest a better 201
Local companies and their representatives say they are more optimistic now than they have been for the last two years. Sales are continuing to pick up even through the normally slow months of December and January, and there are no signs that they are slowing.

Two manufacturing groups — Wire-Net and the Precision Metalforming Association — just completed surveys of their members. Both found increased, broad-based optimism with regard to the general economy and their own business prospects and hiring plans.

Wire-Net received responses from 213 businesses, mostly local manufacturers of all types. The PMA’s data came from 116 machine shops, stamping plants and other metal fabricators from across the United States, including Northeast Ohio, where its membership is concentrated.

“I think this is pretty dramatic evidence that the corner has been turned, and now, hopefully, we can pick up some speed on the straightaway,” Wire-Net president John Colm said.

Mr. Colm said he was particularly struck by his members’ optimism about their prospects for higher sales and hiring in 2011.

A vast majority of Wire-Net’s respondents, 84%, said they expected to see their revenues rise in 2011 — with 39.5% saying they expect an increase of more than 10%. Only 7.3% said they expected to see a decrease in their sales this year.

“That was a dramatic switch from 2009,” Mr. Colm said. “Only 8% in 2009 said revenues would go up.”

Likewise, 52% of the PMA’s survey participants said they expect their order volumes to increase over the next three months. That’s only the third time since 2009 in the monthly poll that a majority of the organization’s respondents indicated they expected an increase, and it’s the first time it has happened since 54% said they expected a pickup in February 2010.

As for hiring employees, manufacturers indicated they are adding A2Z METALWORKER

’So far, so good’

Optimism among manufacturers appears broad-based. Manufacturers in the automotive sector have been telling Crain’s they’re seeing steady improvement going into 2011, and those in other industries echo their sentiments.

For example, Mentor-based Fredon, which is in the process of doubling its size to 60,000 square feet, is seeing an increase in its defense-related helicopter component business and in demand for parts it makes for diesel locomotives. Sales for the last six months of 2010 were 25% ahead of their pace during the same period of 2009 — and so far this year they are running 39% over where they were last year at this time, said Fredon president Roger Sustar.
At Drabik Manufacturing in Cleveland, business has been picking up since late August, but a continued increase in business during the normally slow months of December and January has been a particularly pleasant surprise, said president Jim Drabik.

When Mr. Drabik’s workload picks up, it’s often a sign larger companies are making substantial capital investments.
Mr. Drabik said his business normally makes a slow and steady climb out of any recession. This time the recovery was slow in coming, but fast and steady once it began.

U.S. pursues export control reform The Obama administration is continuing its drive to speed export reviews of weapons and high-tech gear despite unrest across the Middle East and should have proposals ready this summer, U.S. defense officials say. Pentagon acquisition chief Ashton Carter underscored the need for reform, saying the current system was so cumbersome it actually drove some nations to buy equipment from other countries. He said the Obama administration was not only willing, but determined to change the system to better protect fewer items, while loosening restrictions on other items that are already widely available on the global market. Escalating protests in the Middle East and North Africa have sparked questions about the wisdom of loosening U.S. export restrictions at a time when Egypt and Tunisia have already seen leaders overthrown. Critics worry that U.S. weapons could fall into the hands of Islamistcontrolled governments that are hostile to the United States or Israel, the closest U.S. ally in the region. Defense officials say they are keeping a close eye on any pending arms sales but the administration is proceeding on a “case by case” basis rather than imposing a blanket moratorium on weapons sales to the Middle East. “It’s in our interest to make this possible,” he said. “When we make it difficult for people, they just give up and go somewhere else to get the equipment they need.” SAUDI, EMIRATES DEALS GOING AHEAD Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said export reforms were driven in part by concerns raised by some of the United States’ closest allies, like Britain and Australia, who complain that current laws hamper their ability to work as closely with the U.S. military as both sides would like. Thus far,Whitman said, there was no move to halt sales to countries like the United Arab Emirates or Saudi Arabia.

Boeing starts assembling first production P-8A Poseidon Boeing star ted final assembly of the fir st U.S. Navy P-8A Po s e i d o n p ro duction aircraft last month at its Renton factory. The Navy plans to purchase 117 of the 737-based Poseidon anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft to replace its turboprop Lockheed Electra-based P-3 Orion fleet.
The Navy awarded Boeing a $1.6 billion contract for the first six production P-8A Poseidons in January, following up on contracts for two static-test P-8As and six flight-test aircraft. “Boeing will deliver this first aircraft to the Navy on schedule in 2012 in preparation for initial operational capability, which is planned for 2013,” Chuck Dabundo, Boeing vice president and P-8 program manager, said in a news release. The first production P-8A fuselage arrived from supplier Spirit AeroSystems last month and was loaded into a tooling fixture, Boeing said. Workers have since started installing systems, wires and other small parts. Boeing has refitted an old site in Seattle for P-8 military systems installation and testing.

Raytheon’s secondgeneration exoskeleton (XOS 2), essentially a wearable robotics suit, has been named one of the Best Inventions of 2010 byTime Magazine. The suit was unveiled for the first time during an event at the company’s Salt Lake City research facility. XOS 2 is lighter, stronger and faster than its predecessor, yet it uses 50 percent less power, and its new design makes it more resistant to the environment. The wearable robotics suit is being designed to help with the many logistics challenges faced by the military both in and out of theater. Repetitive heavy lifting can lead to injuries, orthopedic injuries in particular. The XOS 2 does the lifting for its operator, reducing both strain and exertion. It also does the work faster. One operator in an exoskeleton suit can do the work of two to three soldiers. Deploying exoskeletons would allow military personnel to be reassigned to more strategic tasks. The suit is built from a combination of structures, sensors, actuators and controllers, and it is powered by high pressure hydraulics. Representatives from Paramount Home Entertainment, including the actor Clark Gregg (aka Agent Phil Coulson of the Marvel® Movie franchise), were in attendance to capture footage of XOS 2 to include in a video that was produced to support the release of Iron Man® 2 on DVD and Blu ray.

Wire Electrical Discharge Machining Process sample management services for the nuclear waste industry throughout the United States. The business was then, and remains today, versed in taking the nuclear waste of the past and providing clean solutions for the future of nuclear waste disposal. NFT is new, because it recently consolidated its two nuclear filtration businesses (manufacturing and services) into one, and just in this past quarter, acquired Paradigm Design and Manufacturing (PDM), an ISO9001:AS9100 specialized 5-axis machine shop, with a customer base that is heavily focused on the aerospace, defense, and medical industries. With this acquisition, NFT not only has its legacy of superior engineering and design capabilities, but now it has superior machine tool capital assets and in-house expertise for its current customers. Terry Wickland, vice president with 20 years of tenure at NFT says, “We were outsourcing our machining requirements to a few different suppliers, and Gary Vaillancourt, owner of PDM, was clearly a superior supplier with outstanding machining capabilities. The acquisition of PDM now offers this capability to our current and our new customers, all in-house. Our customers can now come to NFT for anything from components to full kitting.”

Inspection of Critical High Tolerance Components is Standard Operation at NFT Wow! NFT is a company you want to do business with if you are a Tier One company engaged in the nuclear, aerospace, defense or medical industries! NFT, a minority and family owned business, is a long term supplier to such prestigious entities as the Department of Homeland Security, Department of Energy, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Bechtel Corp, and Savannah River Site to name a few. NFT, with dozens of patents under their belts, has supplied parts to some of the most renowned customers in the world! The company, now called NFT, is a relatively new company, but its divisions date back to 1984, when Gil Brassell, a materials scientist and engineer from a small town in New Mexico, founded Nuclear Filter Technology as a Minority Owned (8A Certified) business. (Gil is, by all means, a success story to hear about, but that’s not what this article is about.) Shortly after founding Nuclear Filter Technology, Gil, a degreed engineer and entrepreneur, saw an untapped business potential for nuclear waste removal services, and opened a new company that provided turn-key analytical A2Z METALWORKER

Industry heads for record deliveries Airbus and Boeing are on course to ship more than 1,000 aircraft this year, but can the airlines absorb all these new jets? Airlines will digest more new mainline airliners than ever before in 2011, as deliveries rise by 5% and surpass four figures for the first time.

Shipments were effectively flat last year, as Airbus’s slight increase was offset by a small decline in deliveries from Seattle. Airbus again out-produced its rival - for the eighth year in succession - delivering 510 aircraft. This breaks its previous all-time output record of 498, set the year before. Boeing’s deliveries fell slightly from 481 in 2009 to 462, with the absence of 787 shipments beginning to tell on the airframer’s output. As a result, the two rivals’ combined delivery tally, 972 aircraft, was down slightly on the 979 delivered in 2009, which at the time was an industry record. However, this will change in 2011 as the two manufacturers ramp up output across both their single-aisle and widebody lines. Boeing should finally begin to ship Dreamliners to customers, as well as the stretched 747-8. Airbus’s chief salesman John Leahy shrugs off the pessimistic outlook that, he says, was prevalent a year ago. “A lot of experts were talking about a 30% reduction in our production and Boeing’s production, and that it was inevitable there was going to be a double-dip recession,” he says. A2Z METALWORKER

20 • March/Apr 2011

Even the International AirTransport Association “was predicting the airlines would have the worst year they had ever had in the history of international aviation.Well, none of that turned out to be right,” points out Leahy, adding that the industry is “resilient” and is “coming back”. The 780 narrowbodies produced by Airbus and Boeing last year accounted for about 80% of their total deliveries. Both manufacturers are progressively ramping up to reach a combined output of almost 80 singleaisle aircraft a month within the next two years, based on already announced increases. And both are evaluating further boosts which could take their combined monthly rates into the 90-100 aircraft range. Airbus expects its deliveries this year will rise to about 520-530 aircraft, while Boeing forecasts 485-500 shipments - its final tally dependent on how successful it is getting series production of the 747-8 and 787 under way. Whatever happens, production should surpass 1,000 units for the first time. “The market’s increased preference for new equipment has resulted in premature obsolescence for many older jets, weakening companies that depend on aftermarkes for the bulk of their profit,” says Aboulafia. “Right now, airline profits and passenger traffic look strong so there’s not much risk other than a doubledip recession or sustained, very high fuel prices,” adds Aboulafia. “But there are certain areas of concern. Both Airbus and Boeing are using new, very high A330 and 777 rate plans as a way of hedging against a successful 787 ramp-up. But the market does not need 10 a month of all three types, particularly if the A350 XWB arrives on time.”

Boeing Bid Beats Europe for Tanker The Pentagon awarded Boeing Co. a contract worth more than $30 billion for aerial refueling tankers, closing a chapter in a tortured bidding contest, but potentially launching a fresh trans-Atlantic political controversy.

billion, calls for delivery of 18 aircraft by 2017. Overall, the contract is worth more than $30 billion, according to Air Force Secretary Michael Donley. EADS’s proposal is built around the Airbus A330 jet. Boeing forwarded a design built around its 767 commercial aircraft.

The award preserves Boeing’s decades-long position as supplier of refueling aircraft to the Air Force, and shores up its standing as a U.S. national champion. The Pentagon’s move is also likely to feed perceptions in European capitals that the U.S. defense market—the biggest in the world—remains largely closed to European defense suppliers. The losing bidder was EADS North America, a unit of European Aeronautic Defence & Space Co.

Boeing’s victory promises to breathe new life into its 767 wide-body aircraft, which entered service in 1982 but has seen commercial orders dwindle in recent years. Boeing has 50 orders remaining for the twin-engine jet, a long-haul workhorse for airlines around the world. The tanker win lets Boeing keep building the jets at its huge Everett, Wash., factory and could help the company attract new commercial orders.

Past efforts by the Air Force to replace its tankers have been upended by scandal, and industry observers said a protest could stall delivery of the aircraft. Ahead of the announcement, the governors of Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana sent a letter to President Barack Obama in support of the bid by EADS, which proposed building its tanker at a new facility in Mobile, Ala.

Thousands of U.S. manufacturing jobs are at stake. Boeing proposed to build its tanker at existing facilities in Washington and Kansas, and said the program would support around 50,000 total U.S. jobs and hundreds of suppliers around the country. EADS said its tanker would keep 48,000 Americans employed, and bring jobs to the depressed Gulf Coast region.

In announcing the award, Deputy Secretary of Defense William Lynn emphasized the Pentagon’s new focus on cost savings. The contract, he said, “favored no one but the taxpayer and the war fighter.”

The KC-X refueling tanker is an effort to replace the Air Force’s aging fleet of KC-135 tankers, which began flying under President Dwight Eisenhower. But the KC-X came to symbolize a highly politicized military procurement process. Previous efforts to pick a winner collapsed amid protests and procurement scandals. This latest award marks the Air Force’s third major attempt to replace its tanker fleet.

Sustainability Can Pay “Huge Dividends” For Companies Editor in Chief Gary Mintchell wrote in Automation World that “applying sustainability as a manufacturing strategy pays huge dividends.” Mintchell notes that the concept has become obscured by buzzwords, but at its core “manifests itself in activities such as reducing the amount of energy or utilities-electricity, oil, water-consumed in production, seeking alternative energy sources such as re-using waste heat, using power from solar or wind sources, recycling or otherwise reducing material use.” Mintchell describes in detail how some companies have successfully implemented sustainable manufacturing processes, and concludes, “Manufacturers are developing many innovative methods for achieving sustainable manufacturing,” and “in the process, they are discovering untapped areas for efficiency and cost reduction.”

Despite direct offers, US NAVAIR chose not to respond or address any of those allegations. One of the flaws that appeared headed for correction, however, was the issue of 360 degree covering fire. This capability is useful for fire support. It is especially helpful when entering or covering landing zones, where rotary aircraft are most vulnerable.

Pilkington Metal Finishing is celebrating 30 years in business this year! If you are involved in precision manufacturing or fabrication, likely you have sources for heat treating, powder coating, anodizing, non-destructive testing (NDT), liquid and conversion coating, screen and pad-printing and other special processes, but less likely that you have a supplier that does it all! And with Pilkington Metal Finishing strategically located just minutes from the Salt Lake City Airport, their customers can easily and cost effectively be located anywhere west of the Mississippi. Van Pilkington, founder and co-owner of Pilkington Metal Finishing says, “All of our business competencies have evolved from our customers’ requirements.” The company started in a small garage, and now sits in an impressive 75,000 foot facility with more than 140 employees. The company is operated by a core management team of 3: Van, co-owner and brother David Pilkington, and Director of Quality, Wayne VanTassell. The Pilkington team is very experienced in special processes, with more than one-third of the employees having a tenure of 5 plus years at the company of whom 18 employees have 10 years or more with the company. Today, the company continues to satisfy its customers with critical Nadcap Certifications, which they embarked upon first 6 years ago. Their Nadcap certifications today include 4 main categories: Chemical Processing; NDT, Heat Treat and Aerospace Quality A2Z METALWORKER

Van says that at Pilkington you will find some of the latest in metal finishing technology and equipment. “We continue to invest in processes, equipment and training. We have the ability to test our coatings in-house as well as calibrate most of the equipment needed to run our business. Our capital expenditures are a part of our commitment in our business practices -- to remain competitive we must always upgrade and improve in order to best serve our customers.” Pilkington strives to be viewed as an extension, in essence, an external department, to their loyal customers. For instance, Pilkington meets weekly with several key customers, much like an internal department within an organization. “We like routine meetings and conversations with our customers so we can learn how to better serve them, to address problems in their early stages, and to celebrate victories as well.” Today, Pilkington’s customers include some very large companies

from the aerospace, medical, military and sporting goods sectors. Pilkington credits their customers for encouraging them to continuously expand the special processing services they offer. “While high-quality standards and quick-turn are primary objectives, we additionally reduce costs and project risk by combining many finishing operations right here, under our roof.” Enough of an advantage that it is not unusual for Pilkington Metal Finishing to process over a hundred separate job orders and tens of thousands of parts in a given day!

background combined with quality systems management are a fantastic addition to our capabilities”.Van additionally credits his father, Lew Pilkington, for superior mentoring over the past 30 years. I think Van’s philosophy towards business success is worth repeating “If you are willing to do what’s needed instead of what you want to do, there is always opportunity.”

In order to ensure that Pilkington maintains its reputation for meeting their commitments, the company offers many advantages. The Pilkington facility, owned and built by Pilkington, is designed specifically for their metal finishing with secondary containment, excellent hazardous waste systems, hoists and lots of 440 3-phase power. • An on-site maintenance staff includes a journeyman electrician and certified mechanic that maintains the facility and services machinery in a preventative maintenance mode. • The company has invested in redundant equipment in critical areas so that down time is reduced to a minimum. • The company has departments with specialists dedicated to their respective areas of responsibility including a Quoting and Job Costing Department, Quality Department, HR department, Production Management and Department Managers who are specialists in their trade. • On-going Investment into Nadcap and ISO quality systems with a commitment to continuous improvement. David Pilkington, a U of U graduate of geo-physics, had enjoyed a very successful and lucrative career in domestic oil exploration. David joined as a partner with Van in 1991 and brought with him a broad range of business experience. “David has been the bold one when it comes to planning and investment. His engineering and technical experience has grown this business far beyond what I thought might be possible” says Van. “We’re fortunate to have Wayne VanTassell in our group as well. His chemical engineering

Van also views his customers, big and small alike, as an integral part of the Pilkington business. The big customers, he says, are the brick that make the building and the small customers are the mortar. Both are equally important in ensuring that Pilkington’s business remains consistent, and that sound growth can occur. What’s Next? Pilkington’s mantra is to offer the special processes that his customers need, so new processes, and the latest technology will be added to the metal finishing menu of capabilities as demand occurs. But a succession plan? Don’t worry.Van and David Pilkington’s sons are involved in the business. You can plan on Pilkington Metal Finishing being around for a long, long time! Plate Inserts for US Body Armor

One source for all your gaging needs.

When reading about modern body armor one often hears about small arms protective inserts (SAPI) or Enhanced SAPI (ESAPI) ceramic plate inserts. While these inserts are more fragile than past generations of inserts, they offer a significant improvement over their 1990s predecessors in terms of both weight and protection. After episodic issues with production ramp-up and quality control, this gear is widely fielded with the US Army and several allied militaries. The US Marines replaced it with the MTV.The Army itself has introduced the Improved OTV. Privately developed body armors like Blackwater Gear were also present in theater. All of these designs rely on a “vest and plates” approach that uses a similar set of inserts to give the vests most of their bullet-stopping power.

Japan’s leading experts in rescue robotics are deploying wheeled and snake-like robots to assist emergency responders in the search for survivors of the devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck the country last month.

NDT and Inspection Services

Details are still scarce, but I’ve gotten word that at least two teams plan to use their search and rescue robots, one team in Tokyo and another in or around Sendai, the city that suffered the most damage in the 8.9 magnitude earthquake and ensuing tsunami. I’m waiting confirmation about a third team, also in Tokyo. (There is no information about the presence of robots at Japan’s troubled Fukushima nuclear power plants, though that would be an ideal application for teleoperated repair and inspection robots.)

Specialized Heat Treat Services

Dr. Robin Murphy, director of the Center for Robot-Assisted Search and Rescue (CRASAR) at Texas A&M University, in College Station, and one of the world’s top experts in rescue robotics, confirms that a team led by Satoshi Tadokoro from Tohoku University and a team led by Eiji Koyanagi from Chiba Institute of Technology’s Future Robotics Technology Center, have deployed, or are about to deploy, their robots.

She reports that Dr. Tadokoro is “en route” to Sendai, where he lives, with the Active Scope Camera, a remote operated 8-meter-long snakelike robot that carries a scope camera and can slither through small spaces. According to Dr. Murphy, it’s “possibly the most capable robot for tight spaces.” At the same time, Dr. Koyanagi will use an agile robot with tank-like tracks called Quince, capable of driving over rubble and climbing stairs, around his home area in Tokyo.

Steen Broust Nielson, Director at MAKE Consulting says: “Some markets - particularly the US - finally showed in 2010 the full damage brought on by the global recession. But drops in some markets were balanced by growth jumps in other markets. Global growth is set to resume in 2011, but the global wind market is seeing shifts in demand, and strategic positioning in the market to capture growth will be key for companies in the sector in coming years.” MAKE Consultancy’s Market Outlook 2011 provides a global forecast of annual installations of new grid connected wind power capacity from 2011 to 2016 based on the analysis of 45 key and emerging wind markets. Key findings of ‘Market Outlook 2011’: • Based on 2010 installations MAKE predicts the global wind market to grow with a CAGR of 11% in the period 2011-2016 with China is expected to lead this market growth;

More Businesses Seeking Loans, Making Acquisitions The Chicago Tribune reports, “Now that demand is up and business is finally improving for many companies, they’re doing what they always do at the beginning of an expansion - calling the bank and asking for a loan.” And in a shift from the past several years, banks are agreeing. “In the last three months of 2010, US Bancorp wrote $8 billion in new business loans, the most in two years.” Other major banks are doing much the same. “Companies are talking about growth in ways they haven’t for three years,” said a Wells Fargo official. And “in another hopeful sign, about 75 percent of the loans taken out in the last three months were to pay for mergers and acquisitions.

Global wind market to resume growth in 2011

• Emerging markets, as well as offshore wind power are expected to gain in strategic importance; • Asia Pacific markets are expected to account for more than half of the market growth in 2011 with China and India leading the region; • The Americas, Canada, Brazil and Mexico are expected to see significant growth in 2011; • Near term growth in Asia Pacific and the Americas is expected to outpace Europe; amd Installation levels in Europe are expected to witness positive growth, with the slow-down in mature Southern European markets offset by continued high activity levels in the emerging markets of Southern and Eastern Europe. With few offshore projects to reach completion in Europe in 2011, European offshore installations are expected to reach 2010 levels.

Lockheed Wins Minuteman III Missile Subcontract

A new report predicts that the global wind turbine market will expand in 2011, with an estimated growth of 18%, after the global growth in new grid connected wind capacity slowed in 2010.

The Philadelphia Business Journal reports Lockheed Martin “said recently it has received a $12.5 million subcontract from Northrop Grumman... to refurbish re-entry vehicle arming and fuzing assemblies for the US Air Force’s Minuteman III Intercontinental Ballistic Missile system.”

Around 34 GW of wind generated power came online in 2010, 3.5% more than 2009, however not all wind markets fared equally

The contract covers one year of work “with an option for a second year.”

There are several benefits to the Misubishi Waterjet that you will not find with other waterjet machines. If you are looking for speed, you will be pleased to know that Mitsubishi has the fastest and most rigid Waterjet cutting machine in the industry. If you are looking for low maintenance costs, you will be happy to hear that Mitsubishi has the lowest maintenance of any Waterjet machine in the industry. Some of Mitsubishi’s unique features include: • Fully supported gantry style construction built like a machine tool driven by twin ballscrews for the best speed and finish without sacrificing accuracy. • KMT 90,000 & 100,000 psi pumps double the cutting speed while using less abrasive than any other pump made from any manufacturer. • Separate stainless steel drop in tank isolates cutting area from the machine tool’s frame to maintain accuracy across the entire travel.

Benefit 1: Unsurpassed quality, longevity, and accuracy for many years to come. • Abrasive Removal System standard. Spent abrasive automatically pumped out of the tank, through a centrifuge separator and into a disposable bag for removal. No need to stop cutting to have the spent abrasive dug or pumped out of the tank. • Auto Grease System. Never need to remove covers to grease & maintain the machine. • KMT’s Intensifier pump requires less time to maintain, and works more hours between maintenance intervals than any direct drive pump. • KMT’s Intensifier pump’s seals last longer than any other pump made due to the longer stroke length and slower stroke speed.

Benefit 2: Increased GREEN LIGHT cutting time resulting in more billable hours. • Mitsubishi’s industry standard control & 2 year warranty. • True Industrial CNC Machine tool Control, not a PC. The entire system has matched motors, drives, amplifiers, and CPU for finer and faster interpolation with greater power. • More powerful standard software such as true shape nesting for maximum material utilization. Auto centering & skewing standard for quick set up. • Automatic Z axis probe for constant height control, and collision detection to eliminate catastrophic head crashes. • IntelligentTaper Control automatically compensates for taper for straighter, more more accurate cutting without reducing speed.

Benefit 3: Powerful yet easy to operate control with standard features supplied by a company who understands cutting & shaping through EDM & laser.

Your Source For Single Machined Components To Complex Automation Equipment needed, and we purchased 1-2 machines at a time. This allowed us to pay them off before making any new purchases. Foremaster is built on a solid and conservative financial model, ensuring that we can weather downturns.” The company weathered the 2008-2009 economic downturn without a single layoff! In fact, Foremaster Tool has no sales force and does little to add to their customer base as they are kept extremely busy with repeat business from satisfied customers.

Foremaster Tool is a precision manufacturing company in Northern Utah with a long family legacy of producing quality and exacting machine work. Their long list of high-profile customers continues to depend on Foremaster Tool’s varied machining, assembly and inspection capabilities as well as their capable staff and sparkling, professional facility. Large Fortune 500 customers have trusted their very complex parts and assemblies to Foremaster Tool. Their list of customers includes several large aerospace & defense contractors, automotive suppliers as well as local and national manufacturers who are impressive by any standards. There are many reasons why Foremaster Tool is a leader in precision machining and manufacturing, but several unique elements and a family conviction have contributed significantly to their success. Alvin (Pete) and Bonnie Foremaster founded the company 41 years ago after Pete had spent years in the precision machining/tool and die trade and was confident in his ability to open his own business. He also had a succession plan in son Brian. Brian worked for the company from the time he was in high school, then Brian opted to enhance his skills outside of the company for a number of years. Brian learned more about the trade while working at a few very large companies, including Honeywell. At age 25, Brian felt he had the newly acquired skill sets to come back into Foremaster Tool full-time. Brian is assisted by the management team, which includes Craig Blackett, Bonnie Foremaster, andYolanda Foremaster, Brian’s wife. Bonnie says, “Pete was an expert machinist, and a good business man. Brian, with key team members, has taken Foremaster to the next level.” The Foremaster family has built their business with conservative and solid financial prudence. Bonnie says, “Over the past 40 plus years we expanded the business gradually, increasing the facility size as A2Z METALWORKER

Foremaster Tool’s facilities have grown with financial stability in mind. The company opened in a 2400 square foot facility, and over the years moved from a 4800 square foot facility, to 9600, and then to 11,000.When they were bursting at the seams and couldn’t even accommodate the floor space for a bar feeder they needed, they planned their move to their current facility, an 18,000 square foot building located in Ogden, Utah. With low debt key to their growth, the Foremaster owners purchased their latest facility. And with their latest impressive facility, Foremaster Tool is poised again for growth. The team members at Foremaster are almost all journeymen machinists, and approximately half have more than 10 years of tenure with the company. Brian Foremaster, president and co-owner with Bonnie Foremaster, says, “We only bring on 1 or 2 trainees at a time, and our team mentors them until they become expert machinists. Additionally, our turnover rate with our journeymen machinists is almost non-existent.You get years of true craftsman expertise with the team at Foremaster.” The company is well versed in electrical panel assembly. In fact, they have a master electrician on staff, and their accomplishments include complete high level assembly of products requiring electrical

panels. Today, companies like ATK Launch and Autoliv capitalize on Foremaster’s capabilities in this arena. Foremaster Tool specializes in custom tooling with quick turn-around, and there aren’t many machine shops that can do this for their customers. Only shops with very experienced journeymen machinists can satisfy these requirements. They are also well- known for their unique ability manufacture automation assembly equipment. Craig Blackett, operations manager says, “Our customers come to us with a design. We then price the machine components, price the total assembly, machine the parts, and do the final assembly. If and when there is an issue, we are responsible, and we engineer the solution. There is no going back and forth with several machine shops to get the issue resolved.” Brian adds, “This also makes the end automation assembly equipment less expensive for our customers, because there aren’t several party add-ons.We can also turn the product around to our customers much faster, since all of the deliverables are under our control.” When Pete Foremaster initially purchased machines to start his business, Tracy Smith, 2nd generation owner of Smith Machinery, were business associates and friends and worked together to select the right equipment for Pete’s vision of his business. Today, Brian Foremaster continues to purchase high-performance/high-value machine tools from Smith Machinery. He says, “We purchase machines that epitomize operator efficiency – and Mazak fits this bill.Their controls are so user friendly that we have our machinists operating 2 Mazaks simultaneously. There isn’t another machine I can think of where one machinist can safely and efficiently run two machines. In essence, we really look to find both quality and value when we buy a machine. We find that Mazak fits this requirement very well.” Obviously their Mazak machine tools help Foremaster Tool to run their business efficiently as well as profitably, but Brian is quick to admit that another very important reason he purchases his machines from Smith Machinery is their dedication to customer support and satisfaction. “You will not find better local support in this industry than you will find with Smith Machinery. Their Applications Engineer, Ben Anderson, is the best A.E. I have come in contact with, ever! Their

sales engineer, Scott Trumble, always goes the extra mile. He is here for every installation and he stops by at least once a week to see how Smith Machinery can help our business. The Smith Machinery team members are both knowledgeable and a pleasure to do business with. They are trustworthy.” Brian points to a recent event that describes the Smith Machinery ethic. “We had a Mazak machine that was 8 years old, and out of warranty. We had contracted a local independent service repair company to repair machine. After 30 days, the machine still wasn’t up and running. So, finally, we called Clark Smith at Smith Machinery, and he told us that he would absorb the cost of the labor if we paid the cost for the parts. Clark got us the support we needed, and within days, we were back up and running. As I have said, Smith Machinery offers support you will not find anywhere else. “ Foremaster Tool has no sales force and does little to add to their customer base, Brian admits. They don’t have time to, because they are kept extremely busy with repeat business from satisfied customers. However, Foremaster Tool does welcome new business and encourages companies to contact them if you are looking for a supplier that can produce parts that are extremely complex and of tight tolerance, but who can also offer electrical and/or mechanical design and assembly.

Foremaster Tool is in Ogden, Utah. When you do business with them, you will find them to be a professional and experienced team capable of providing exacting and quality results, whether it is single machined components or complex automation equipment. Check them out at www.foremastertool. com or call them at (801) 737-0265. A2Z METALWORKER

US Manufacturing Remains Strong, Expert Writes In an article titled “The Truth About US Manufacturing,” Mark Perry, a professor of economics at the University of Michigan, Flint, and a visiting scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, writes in theWall Street Journal that while some people may believe that manufacturing is on the decline in the US. But the data, Perry writes, shows that manufacturing remains strong in this country. Times are tough for many in the industry, Perry concedes. But he argues that with the proper skills, American workers will still have a place in the new US manufacturing economy.

Honeywell Expands SOLARC® Coating Materials for Solar Panels Hon eywell Electronic Materials announced it has expanded its line of SOLARC anti-reflective coating materials to include a new formulation that allows for easier application and less material usage.

The new product, called Honeywell SOLARC RPV, is specifically designed to be applied through single-sided roller coating application, which is easier and allows panel manufacturers to use less material than alternative coating methods. SOLARC materials are based on advanced materials used in semiconductor manufacturing. They are transparent coatings that improve the light transmittance through the glass that covers photovoltaic, or PV, panels, thus increasing the PV module efficiency and power output. These coatings also significantly reduce glare from the glass, allowing the PV panel to better blend with its surroundings.

SOLARC RPV coating has consistently produced 3 to 3.5 percent average transmittance gain across a broad solar spectrum that is relevant for PV cell operation, from 350 nanometers through 1,100 nanometers.

Most commercially available PV panels today lose approximately 4 percent of their potential power output due to light reflection from the front surface of the cover glass. In addition to the decreased electricity generation, the glare from the reflected light is considered aesthetically undesirable, especially in residential rooftop installations.

The new coating has also demonstrated superior durability in a broad variety of accelerated tests designed to imitate harsh environmental conditions to which a PV panel is likely to be exposed during its lifetime.

Honeywell’s SOLARC coatings reduce reflection significantly, resulting in more light reaching the solar cell, which translates into higher power conversion. Panel manufacturers are increasingly using anti-reflective coatings, and SOLARC enables an

Recycling Metals, Conserving Resources, Since 1961 Delcam adds data repair module for FeatureCAM CAM software

repair automatically models from a variety of sources, including standard formats like IGES and STEP, plus native files, such as CATIA, Pro/ Engineer and Inventor, and output a file that can be read directly into FeatureCAM. The Solid Doctor is able to tackle all the common problems that can be found when translating low precision and incomplete data, including gaps and overlaps between surfaces, or duplicated and missing surfaces, and generate a valid, high-precision model ready for programming. A combination of automated and advanced tools means that simple repairs can be carried out quickly and easily, while more complex problems can be overcome by deleting and replacing the existing surfaces within the model.

Delcam has introduced a new data repair module for its FeatureCAM feature-based CAM system. The module, which is based on functionality from Delcam’s PowerSHAPE CAD software, will allow FeatureCAM users to repair poor-quality CAD models from a wide range of design software. Once repaired, the models will be able to take full advantage of the highly-automated programming provided by FeatureCAM.

The Solid Doctor first analyses the model and highlights any problems found with a warning label. The automated repair sequence can then be run. Each corrected issue has its label changed from red to green as it is repaired.

At the heart of the new module is Delcam’s Solid Doctor. This allows users to read in and

For the more serious problems that remain, it will usually be necessary to generate replace-

ment surfaces in the affected area. This can be done easily using Smart Surfacing technology from PowerSHAPE. The user simply deletes the existing surfaces and sketches around the area to be repaired. The software will then analyse the boundary and suggest the most appropriate type of surface to fill the space. Once the user is happy with the quality of the repaired surfaces, they are automatically incorporated back into the model. This process continues until all the inconsistencies have been resolved and a model created that is suitable for machining. “The main benefit of FeatureCAM is its speed and ease of use,” claimed Delcam Marketing Manager, Peter Dickin. “The Solid Doctor provides an equally fast and simple method for repairing imported CAD files, and so will help to further shorten the lead time needed to move from computer model to machined part.” For further information on Delcam’s FeatureCAM software, please contact: -Peter Dickin, Marketing Manager -e-mail: marketing@ delcam.com.

New GD Stryker Combat Vehicle Needs Restoration General Dynamics’ new Stryker combat vehicle suffers from snags in the driver’s compartment, and is unsuitable for long missions in Afghanistan, according to the Pentagon’s director of operational test and evaluations, Michael Gilmore. “The army should first fix the seat-release latch, used to evacuate an incapacitated driver. Stryker’s small driver’s compartment restricts movement and leads to fatigue during long missions. It should redesign it as soon as feasible,” he said. The army has been testing the new variant in Arizona and California, US, and has found that it meets and in some cases exceeds its requirements in providing protection. The Stryker, with a double V-shaped, blast-deflecting hull, has been redesigned to protect US troops against roadside bombs in Afghanistan’s rugged terrain. The wheeled Stryker troop transport has a crew of two (a driver and commander) and can carry a nine-soldier squad. The US Army plans to acquire 450 Strykers for deployment in June 2011.

Hear Why You Should Certify Your Flowmeters Why calibrate/certify your flowmeters? It is expensive for your company when compared to the certification cost of a staticcalibration item such as a pressure gauge or OD micrometer. Also, many small companies have no spare flowmeters, so to calibrate means shutting down production lines.

I could give many reasons why you should get flowmeters calibrated/certified such as: DCAS or FAA compliance, Primecontractor requirements, or Medical/FDA regulations. Instead, this article will explain why money saved might be the best and simplest reason of all~ We will use an example a small job-shop performing shieldedwelding gas operations which use Argon or Helium in the process. Most companys meter their welding gas using a brass rotameter flowmeter combined with a pressure regulator attached to the CGA580 fitting on the Argon tanks. These meters are inexpensive, costing around $175-$300 each and their accuracy is accordingly not very good without checking them against a flow standard. Calibration/certification of these Argon/Helium flowmeters at a Primary Standard Laboratory, such as NBS Calibrations, Inc. costs $200-$250 and typically takes 10 working days for turnaround time. Most owners or QC managers scream “How much?” when informed of this and we never hear from many of them again. This reminds me of an old adage in the flow business: Calibration of flowmeters is a messy business. Since flow calibration/certification is a dynamic-calibration process, combining certified gauging with a fluidic flow circuit, something may spill on the floor! The mess is trying to explain that such an expensive and time consuming certification is actually more cost efficient than a company initially perceives. Going back to the example of a welding process shop consuming Argon as a shield gas: At approximately $80/tank of Argon using 16 tanks per month (or 192 tanks/year). Argon is costing your company $15,400/year.This business uses 2 of the combination Brass-body regulator/flowmeters to meter the flow of Argon. My experience with these meters over the years shows they are typically in error +/- 15% of indicated flowrate. For the sake of our example we assume ther meters are reading “low” showing 40 SCFH when the real/calibrated flowrate is 46 SCFH (40 x 1.15 or 15%). This loss sounds small, but let’s look at the math and savings: If using your certified flowmeters to correctly meter the gas, 15% savings on $15,00/ year comes to $2300 saved in Argon each year. Subtracting two flowmeters (calibrated at $225 each per year) is $450, subtracted from $2300 in gas costs, this leaves $1850 in savings by using calibrated/certified flowmeters! This is a significant amount in these lean times.

At first glance it might seem a costly and production stopping endeavor to certify your flowmeters, but in reality it will save you money. Even considering the low cost of purchasing a “spare” flowmeter to rotateout and keep your process going, this makes sense for even the smallest welding or process shops. Contact NBS Calibrations Inc. for more information at 480-894-0592.

Another 8 Years for the C-130 ATS Training Contract Lockheed Martin recently announced an 8-year, $270 million contract to continue offering its C-130 Aircrew Training Systems (ATS), which provide simulators, computer training, and instruction to C-130 pilots in the USA and around the world. Graduates of the formal school are considered mission-qualified, and can report directly to active units – but not C-130J units. The new C-130J family are very different aircraft internally, and have their own C-130J Maintenance and Aircrew Training System (MATS), with its own instructors and sites. ATS training includes all crew positions, refresher courses, cockpit resource management (initial and recurring), Instrument Refresher Courses, and the Instructor Preparatory Course. The contract also includes a security program, an Environmental Health & Safety program, a scheduling office, a student publications library, and learning center operations. Behind the scenes, a full Training System Support Center (TSSC) supports ATS operations & maintenance, research, and development engineering. Lockheed Martin says that nearly 12,000 students from more than 25 countries depend on C-130 ATS for their training needs every year, and draw on 150 instructors to do so.

Raytheon Delivers 250th APG-79 AESA Radar Raytheon Company has delivered its 250th APG-79 active electronically scanned array radar to Boeing. The APG-79 radar is flown on U.S. Navy F/A-18E/F and EA-18G aircraft, and on the Royal Australian Air Force F/A-18F Super Hornet. “As we recognize this milestone of the 250th APG-79 AESA delivery, it is also significant to note that 85 radar systems were completed for the U.S. Navy in just the last 12 months,” said Eric Ditmars, F/A-18 program director,Tactical Airborne Systems. “The APG-79 radar has revolutionized fighter combat capabilities and dramatically improved situational awareness for aircrews. This combat-proven, advanced radar technology also has logged more than 175,000 operational flight hours.” The APG-79 AESA hardware offers 10-15 times greater reliability than mechanically scanned array radars, which results in lower life-cycle costs. In addition, it provides capabilities that allow warfighters to detect and identify targets beyond the reach of most missiles. The APG-79 AESA radar is in operation with more than a dozen U.S. Navy squadrons. Internationally, the Royal Australian Air Force received the radar system in 2010, marking the delivery of the first foreign military sale of Super Hornets equipped with the APG-79. A2Z METALWORKER
