Editor’s Corner Storms make trees take deeper roots. Dolly Parton Well after this very long stormy year I would like to think we all have stronger deeper roots. 2020 is almost over and we all can breathe a sigh of relief as the holiday season cradles us into the new and hopefully wonderful 2021. What’s really interesting if you think about the world as our home, the United States was not the only country hit hard by the business crushing, toilet paper exhausting pandemic. This invisible enemy affected our whole planet and every person on this planet. It seems like when the whole world is in a fight for its life, people of every walk of life empathize and come together in many ways we never thought possible. We took for granted so many things we never thought would be out of our reach, and we never thought a concert or church, or a comedy show could be dangerous, but they became places we could go to no longer. Our home and our families were our fortress and the phone and the computer were the medium we utilized to connect virtually with people we couldn’t shake hands with. I realize the glass half full or half empty is a perception. Sometimes when one is presented with positive facts it is easier to see the benefits of a half full glass. Here are a few things I found that were bright spots in 2020 and I wanted to share them with you just in case you have never been to a drive in theatre or never used Zoom before. • • • • • • • • • • • • •

A 103-year-old grandma beat COVID-19 and celebrated with a Bud Light. Drive-in movie theaters made a comeback. Drive-in concerts are a thing now. Wearing sweatpants and tees became acceptable fashion choices all day, every day. Restaurants got awesomely creative to enforce social distancing including pool noodle hats, bumper boats and dapper mannequin guests. Americans rushed to adopt and foster pets in need amid the pandemic. Sure, we might have gained a little weight, but we rediscovered our love for old hobbies like baking and gardening. We also have time to read again and we’re seizing the moment to educate ourselves. Puzzles and board games became cool again and offered a much-needed break from our screens. We learned that homeschooling is hard and finally recognized teachers for the heroes that they are. Health care workers and essential workers. Also heroes. Bike trails became one of the few places in the country that were open. We realized how much we love and need sports and its ability to unite us.

As manufacturing businesses we had a very uncertain year in regard to business. We learned how to do business in a safe, clean way, and we learned the companies we focus on doing business with can determine our path for a bright future. I encourage you all to focus on the positive things in our lives and to overcome and adapt so that we all can have our freedom again. Until next issue, God Bless all of our first responders!

MIDACO’s NEW Automatic Pallet-Cart Changer for 5-Axis VMCs Work NON-STOP on 5-Axis Machining Centers. The Automatic Pallet-Cart Changer (AMPCC15) allows for uninterrupted pallet transfer with an interlocked train cart (patent pending) moving back and forth through the shuttle. Each cart holds two (2) pallets and connects to additional carts with T-pins allowing for continuous part transfer into the machine tool. The operator can load a train of carts to run while they attend to other tasks or go “lights-out”. Pallets are easily loaded onto carts without obstruction. Interlocked pallet carts are mobilized through the shuttle system on casters allowing the shuttle arm to continuously feed pallets into the 5-Axis machining center. Once a cart is pushed through the other side, the operator can easily load new pallets and change parts while the spindle is cutting.A completed pallet cart can be removed by unlocking the T-pins and rolled to a different location or to the opposite end of the train to keep production going. Depending on programming, after the full “pallet cart train” passes through the shuttle, the process repeats sending carts back in the opposite direction.

STACKS ON STACKS

Ready for an unstoppable money-making tandem? This is the NHP 5000 with RPS. On its own, the NHP 5000 is a powerful 40 taper, 500mm pallet horizontal machining center. But when teamed with the stackable multi-level Rotary Pallet System (RPS), it becomes legendary. With a compact floor layout and vertical structure, the RPS keeps you running lights out—without taking up valuable square footage. And if projects change constantly from month to month, JIT scheduling on the RPS cuts setup times like 15,000 r/min cuts aluminum. The 3-tier, 21-pallet RPS is the perfect partner for the massive metal removal of the NHP 5000. So buckle up, because you’re about to produce day in and night out.

Ryanair Orders More 737 Max Jets In $7B Boost For Boeing Boeing said Thursday that Ryanair, Europe’s largest ultra low-cost airline, has ordered 75 additional 737 Max airplanes in a deal which the airline said has increased the value of its orders for the single-aisle jet by $7 billion. Boeing has also agreed with Ryanair to deliver the new order and a prior order for 135 jets on an accelerated basis over the next five years, Ryanair Group CEO Michael O’Leary said. Ryanair has firm orders for 210 737 Max jets.

It is the first new order for the Max that Boeing has won in months and the announcement is a boost for both the Renton factory, where the aircraft are built, and for hundreds of Boeing suppliers in Washington state. Boeing suffered close to 1,000 cancellations for the 737 Max during the past two years since two of the jets crashed overseas, killing 346 people and triggering a 20-month grounding of the jet, the longest in U.S. aviation history. “From our perspective, this gives us momentum going into next year,” Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Stan Deal told reporters on a virtual news conference from Washington, D.C. Deal said that Boeing has already built 27 of Ryanair’s jets and 13 more are in the assembly factory, which will generate much needed cash flow for the jet maker when delivered.

He said the jets would be far cheaper for his company to operate and more comfortable for passengers to fly, allowing Ryanair to offer travelers much lower fares. “Boeing build better aircraft than Airbus,” O’Leary said. By Andrew McIntosh – Staff Writer, Puget Sound Business Journal

Manufacturing Industry Confidence Stays Strong As Investment Grows Two surveys of the U.S. manufacturing industry both showed strong readings last month, with data provider IHS Markit’s reading touching its highest level since late 2014. Between the lines: The headline numbers were reassuring, as were the report’s details.

“The rise in investment spending sends a welcome signal that companies have become more optimistic about longer term prospects, something that was reinforced by a surge in firms’ expectations about production in the year ahead — even in consumer-facing sectors — to the highest since early-2015,” Chris Williamson, chief business economist at IHS Markit, said in a press release. The big picture: “If we look at the world’s six largest economies they either have buoyant November manufacturing PMIs (US, China, Germany, India and the UK), or, in the case of a lagging Japan, are showing clear signs of improvement,” says Deutsche Bank chief international strategist Alan Ruskin in a note to clients titled “Global PMI is in a ’big is beautiful’ virtuous cycle. U.S. Air Force Gives Lift to Flying Taxis

CMM Revo Half Page Final.indd 1

The Air Force has issued a first-of-its-kind safety endorsement of an electric-powered vehicle similar to a helicopter, opening the door to using such commercially developed equipment for military missions. This initial stamp of approval is meant to lay the groundwork for eventual civilian certification of the technology and even approval of autonomous flights crossing American cities, industry and military officials said. The current version does require a pilot. For now, the impact of the Air Force’s decision, expected to be announced as soon as Thursday, is limited. It means Joby Aviation, a Northern California startup, will become the first maker of novel vertical-takeoff-and-landing craft providing transportation for the U.S. armed services. The Air Force will help accelerate safety analyses by conducting flight tests, pledging to pay for contracts seeking to verify vehicle reliability and generally vetting the capabilities of vehicles through direct and indirect funding of the company. The Air Force intends to help jump-start the budding industry to enhance American competitiveness. The process is expected to take years, but the race to develop air taxis already has attracted significant investments from A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

companies including Boeing Co. ,Toyota Motor Corp. , Hyundai Motor 4/6/2020 2:04:17 PM Group of South Korea and Airbus SE. “We’re really competing with other nations to bring this technology to bear,” Will Roper, head of Air Force acquisitions, said in a recent interview. “Not just for military missions, but for all missions, including commercial ones.” Based on the positive safety assessment, Joby’s vehicle will be contracted to carry cargo and people, as well as provide emergency rescue and other services, initially between military facilities in the U.S. and later around the globe. Ferrying freight among domestic locations connected by military airspace could begin as soon as early next year, according to Mr. Roper and others inside the Air Force. The novel design features six tilt rotors above an egg-shaped body sized for four passengers, producing a vehicle that is lighter, cheaper and quieter than conventional helicopters. In the future, it could be used for missions from slipping commandos into hostile territory to picking up injured pilots on the battlefield to carrying high-priority cargo to remote outposts, according to the Air Continued Next PageGE 10

discuss specific companies. Joby has said it anticipates formal FAA safety certification by 2023.

The Air Force endorsement, stemming from a year-old initiative called Agility Prime, also signals a potentially new chapter for Pentagon procurement, by harnessing for military missions equipment initially developed just for commercial markets.

Separately, earlier this week Joby said it intends to acquire the Uber Elevate unit of Uber Technologies Inc., as part of an expanded partnership between the two companies. The latest agreement also increases Uber’s investment in Joby to $125 million as the two companies pursue plans to integrate future ground and air travel options. On Wednesday, Joby said the Air Force and Uber developments seek to accelerate its timeline for offering services to customers.

“This is about retooling our system to be commercially focused, commercially agile,” Mr. Roper said. He told an industry conference during the summer that the Air Force needs to be involved “wherever innovation is happening in aviation.” Joby said it is “excited to partner with the U.S. government to accelerate testing, development and certification,” adding that the military’s safety and performance evaluation had determined the vehicle “meets Air Force standards for flight.” At this point, the company won’t be authorized to fly in civilian airspace or offer broad commercial services, both of which require full-fledged safety certification by the Federal Aviation Administration. But industry experts, along with military and civilian government officials, see the Pentagon’s endorsement as an important step toward that goal. Referring to the collaboration between military and civilian safety experts, FAA chief Steve Dickson told an air-mobility conference this week, “It’s really gratifying to see how our interests align.” He didn’t

The Pentagon plans to spend roughly $100 million annually to support flight tests and pay for actual transportation as part of the overall effort to assess Joby, which is funded partly byToyota, and other companies working on novel airborne vehicles. The long-term goal, according to Air Force Col. Nathan Diller, who will oversee testing and evaluation, is for the military to collaborate with industry and the FAA to ensure U.S. manufacturers snare a major share of the emerging air-taxi market. Pointing to China’s dominance in commercial drones, he said, “We can’t afford to do what we did with the small-drone industry.” Several other companies are looking for similar endorsements, formally called airworthiness evaluations, in coming months. They includeVermontbased Beta Technologies and Texas-based Lift Aircraft Inc. Oregon Solar Developer Jumping Into Green Hydrogen The rising green hydrogen economy, as some are calling it, has lured in a leading Oregon solar developer. Obsidian Renewables said Friday it had hired Ken Dragoon to head up a new hydrogen project development effort. As executive director of the Portland-based Renewable Hydrogen Alliance, Dragoon has been one of the region’s leaders in promoting the use of renewable energy to produce hydrogen. Hydrogen has the potential to deliver a decarbonizing and versatile fuel, energy storage medium and industrial feedstock. “This is a way to make use of low-cost renewable energy and to make use of surplus supplies of renewable energy and hydroelectric energy,” David Brown, Lake Oswego-based Obsidian’s co-founder and senior principal, said. Hydrogen is a clean energy carrier, but it has to be manufactured, A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

unlocked from compounds. The typical method is a process called natural gas reforming that has a heavy carbon-dioxide footprint. The idea that’s been taking hold in Europe — and now getting attention in the U.S. — is to use renewably sourced electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen through a process called electrolysis. That yields “green hydrogen.”

Hydrogen can be used in a variety of ways: as a storage medium when renewable energy is in surplus; to power fuel cells in vehicles or stationary fuel cell generators; to displace a portion of the methane in the natural gas grid or in gas-fired power plants; and in a wide range of industrial settings where fossil-produced hydrogen is common.

We are me dev and Dis a se

“Our idea is not to focus on supplying hydrogen to power plants, which is where most of the talk is, but instead to supply hydrogen to other users, industrial users, people who can use hydrogen in their business,” Brown said.

He talked about hydrogen-powered fuel cells displacing backup diesel generators at data centers and hospitals. Food processors and fertilizer producers could take advantage of hydrogen to decarbonize their operations and products, Brown said. Continued Next PageGE 10

“The uniqueness of our product and what we just got certified is that we’re an all-in-one solution, meaning that the product will provide communications between the aircraft and the airline operations center — think of text messaging between the aircraft and the airline’s operations center,” McCammant said. “That could be communicating performance information on the aircraft, it could be communicating positioning or a changing gate. It also provides the controller-pilot data link communications globally,” he said. McCammant said Spectralux is one of five companies in the world that makes such devices and it competes with much larger players, such as Airbus and Rockwell. But the Spectralux Envoy device includes three different software protocols in the same box, McCammant said, so it meets requirements for communications protocol standards set by the U.S. as well as Europe and the International Civil Aviation Agency, the United Nations agency based in Montreal. However, McCammant said his company’s Envoy product offers “a more economical solution” to meet an airline or aircraft operator’s needs because it offers the capability of satellite communications over water, but also the less costly option of Very High Frequency (VHF) radio communications over land and global, real-time aircraft tracking. Rivals offer the three different communications management functions, but on three different pieces of communications hardware in the aircraft, increasing costs and aircraft weight, meaning it lowers fuel efficiency, McCammant said. “If you’re looking at their (rivals’) communications equipment, you could have three pieces of hardware for what we do in one,” McCammant added. “That’s a competitive advantage we bring to the market.” Spectralux’s customers include Boeing, Collins Aerospace, Honeywell, Air Wisconsin, Icelandair, Azur Air, and Jet2, McCammant said.

Redmond-based Spectralux Avionics has earned Federal Aviation Administration approval to sell Envoy, its newest and most advanced satellite data communications device, to global airlines and business jet owners and operators. Spectralux President Scott McCammant said the new device’s approval is “a significant milestone” for the company at a difficult time during the aerospace downturn. His workforce of 50 workers is entirely furloughed right now as the company awaits a recovery and potential new financing that would allow him to bring back workers.

Like almost all companies in the aerospace and airline sectors, Spectralux has been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic. “For us, 95% of our sales are in the aftermarket, meaning we support the airlines and operators directly. With most airlines operating at about 15% of their fleet capacity (around the world), they are deferring maintenance, discretionary spending and avionics upgrades in the cockpit and compliance updates they need to do.,” he said.

2008 recession. However, after the first wave of pandemic-driven shutdowns, segment recoveries for various manufacturers have been uneven. Looking ahead to 2021, the recovery may take longer to reach pre-pandemic levels, as Deloitte projections based on the Oxford Economic Model (OEM) anticipate a decline in annual manufacturing GDP growth levels for 2020-2021, with a forecast of -3.7% for 2020 and -5.4% for 2021. Reeling from the effects of a global pandemicdriven shutdown, US industrial production (-16.5% year over year) and US total factory orders (-22.7% year over year) saw a steep decline in April, followed by suppressed improvement. The current US Industrial Production Index stands at 101.5 in September (the most recent month available), a substantial dip from its pre-pandemic level of 110. Production and order levels are still below 2019 levels, but the trajectory of the decline has slowed. Total industrial capacity utilization improved to 71.5% in September, up from 64.1% in April; however, it’s still below pre-pandemic levels of 77%.

Deloitte Releases “2021 Manufacturing Outlook” Report As uncertainty becomes the new normal, Deloitte’s “2021 Manufacturing Outlook” report outlined the key considerations for creating disruptionproof businesses and presents new findings from a post-election survey of manufacturing executives. To understand the outlook and perspectives of organizations across the energy, resources, and industrials industries, Deloitte fielded a survey of more than 350 US executives and other senior leaders in November 2020 following the 2020 US presidential election. The survey captured insights from respondents in five specific industry groups: chemicals and specialty materials, engineering and construction, industrial products, oil and gas, and power and utilities. According to the report, before the pandemic hit, the manufacturing industry was working to regain the momentum it had reached after the A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

2020 also experienced a significant dip in manufacturing employment levels, largely due to forced shutdowns in the early days of the pandemic and suppressed orders, with April recording manufacturing’s lowest employment levels since 2010. Despite recent gains from much of the country’s manufacturing base back in operation, employment levels in October are still 621,000 lower than in February. All of these indicators have created an environment of ongoing uncertainty, although 63% of executives in Deloitte’s postelection poll are showing a somewhat or very positive outlook on business. Explore our four manufacturing industry trends for 2021 and beyond to see how things are shaping up. Summary highlights from Deloitte’s 2021 Manufacturing Outlook: 2020 has been a year like no other in recent history: Before the pandemic hit, the industry was working to regain the momentum it had reached after the 2008 recession, and after the first wave of pandemic-driven shutdowns, segment recoveries for various manufacturers have been uneven. to 2021, the recovery may take longer to reach pre-pandemic levels. Digital is key to caging black swans: “Black swan” disruptions are increasingly frequent, highlighting the value of forecasting and visibility across operations and supply chains. Whether experiencing demand surges, slowdowns or something in between, 76% of manufacturing executives plan to cope by increasing their investments in digital initiatives, and plan to pilot and implement more Industry 4.0 technologies. Digitization will drive productivity: Nearly a quarter (24%) of manufacturing executives moving forward with digitization think digital twins – which allow manufacturers to virtually recreate a product, its production, and even simulate its performance – are the most important focus of tech investment. Digital twin libraries of products, processes and production environments will be instrumental to successfully managing future disruptions. Supply chains are shifting homeward: Regionalization has gained interest due to the disruptions experienced from the pandemic. In fact, 44% of manufacturing executives plan to embrace a more regional supply chain model next year. Many are reducing dependency on China in favor of Asian and American markets. In fact, 31% of executives mentioned that they will nearshore some part of their production back to the Americas in the next year. Digital supply networks can help manufacturers increase visibility and flexibility in these new production environments. The future of work is here: Pre-pandemic work arrangements are unlikely to return. A prevailing skills gap has widened due to pandemic-related furloughs and retirements, prompting accelerated deployment of automation and robotics. About 28% of executives said that matching skillsets to highly automated work environments will be their top workforce challenge next year. Solving forecasting challenges could be critical to navigating the disruption For manufacturers, the events of 2020 may be a warning to develop better systems for navigating disruptions like the one we are currently experiencing. Visibility is likely to become the most critical capability for manufacturers

in the coming months. Where to increase visibility depends on how a company is experiencing the pandemic, as exemplified above, and digital technologies could be important enablers. Digital twins could support new levels of resilience and flexibility In its simplest form, a digital twin is a representation, or blueprint, of a physical thing. That thing could be a single product or a component. It could also be a production process or even the physical production environment. Using a digital twin, a manufacturer can virtually recreate a product, its production, and even simulate its performance in the real world without having to “bend metal” or take any other physical action.

Now Powin — still something of an upstart among well-heeled competitors — is focused on extending its ride, grabbing what it can of a domestic market expected to grow from $1.5 billion this year to $7 billion by 2025, according to the U.S. Energy Storage Association and Wood Mackenzie. To do it, Powin has invested heavily in its technology with a big staff buildout. And the company is bent on continuing to use its Asia expertise to source battery cells at the best price. “We caught lightning in a bottle and now other competitors are moving,” Geoff Brown, Powin’s president since 2016, said. “They’re taking our approach or finding their own ways to reach a similar pricing floor. And so what we do is use that momentum that we had in 2018 and 2019, double down on additional R&D, double down on additional technology investment, and double down on improvement in our product.” The approach

Powin wasn’t starting from nothing when it dove headlong into energy storage in 2016. By then, a vaguely focused subsidiary called Powin Renewable Energy Resources Inc. had begun to turn heads with a patented product that exquisitely balanced the output of the small battery cells that are the foundation of a big energy storage system. With it, Powin offered a holistic, less expensive approach in a nascent sector populated by integrators. “They would buy from someone who had built a module or from somebody else who does a bunch of cells,” Brown said. “And then they would have to buy an enclosure that had been built by somebody else. And then they’d have experienced engineers writing software to bring it all together. It was all very bespoke. There was a lot of margin stacking with that approach.” Powin, by contrast, bought just the battery

Silicon Dreams: A Technological Breakthrough To Let Doctors Peer Inside The Body With Startling Clarity Wilhelm Röntgen had no inkling that he was about to revolutionize how doctors diagnose and treat injuries and disease. In 1895, the German physicist and future Nobel Prize winner was experimenting with an electrified glass vacuum tube when he noticed that it produced mysterious rays — X-rays, he called them — that could pass through solid objects, including his wife Anna’s hand.[1] “I have seen my death,” she reportedly said after seeing a photograph of the bones inside her palm and fingers.[2] The field of radiology was born. Röntgen’s discovery quickly galvanized many brilliant minds around the world, including that of GE co-founder and first chief scientist Elihu Thomson.Thomson built upon Röntgen’s breakthrough and within a year designed an X-ray machine that could be used for “diagnosing bone fractures and locating foreign objects in the body.”[3] It was also Thomson who pushed GE to open its GE Research labs.[4] The scientific institution allowed another brilliant GE scientist,William Coolidge, to invent the modern X-ray tube that has made it possible to scan a patient for a broken bone in just about any hospital or clinic today. C o o l i d g e ’s tubes also lie at the hear t of the X-ray machine’s even more powerful cousin, the computed t o m o g r a p hy (CT) scanner. Prismatic CEO Mats Danielsson, whose team figured out that turning the silicon modules sideways — on the edge — could contribute to the new technology. Image credit: Prismatic Sensors.Top image credit: GE Healthcare. Now, engineers at GE Research with their colleagues at GE Healthcare and the Swedish startup Prismatic Sensors AB hope to alter radiology’s course once again. The researchers have found a way to vastly expand CT’s already impressive imaging powers. The team invented a new way to capture and analyze the X-rays passing through the body and render them into minutely detailed images of the heart, say, or of nodules inside the lungs. They say their method is designed to enable doctors to see deep inside the human body with greater clarity and specificity while exposing patients to less radiation than traditional CT scans. A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

Their approach, which took decades to develop, uses a technique called photon counting and involves hypersensitive X-ray detectors made of “Deep Silicon” technology — a critical component that was difficult to develop. “We believe this technology has the potential to be a substantial step forward for CT imaging that will benefit millions of patients worldwide,” said Kieran Murphy, president and CEO of GE Healthcare. In fact, the promise of the technology is so momentous that GE Healthcare will acquire Prismatic Sensors, the partner that found the way to make the Deep Silicon detector, by January 2021. When completed, it will be GE’s first acquisition since Larry Culp joined the company as chairman and CEO in late 2018. “Silicon is by far the purest material produced for use in detectors and this provides a very clean signal,” said Prismatic CEO Mats Danielsson. “With Deep Silicon you can count the photons very efficiently with unprecedented energy resolution.” The breakthrough technology could not only allow doctors to visualize organs down to the finest structural details, but it potentially could also help them analyze lesions, tumors and other suspect structures they may encounter along the way. “Personally, spatial resolution, the ability to detect and differentiate even the smallest clinical features, is one of the biggest benefits,” said Bruno De Man, technology manager, who leads GE Research’s radiation imaging team, which was key in this development. “Spatial resolution combined with energy resolution has the potential to significantly impact clinical performance for oncology, cardiology, neurology and many other clinical CT applications. For example, accurate characterization of lung nodules helps doctors determine whether they are malignant or benign. Or when people suffering from cardiovascular diseases have plaque, providing clinicians the details of the plaque facilitates their accurate diagnosis. Or they can image bone microstructure for osteoporosis patients to help determine fracture risks. Those are just three examples of applications that may benefit from this technology.” Scientists and engineers have been trying to perfect photon counting CT, the technology at the heart of the breakthrough, since the early 1990s. De Man, a CT expert with a Ph.D. in medical imaging, became smitten by its potential soon after he arrived at GE Research from his native Belgium in 2001 and joined the team that led the early photon-counting developments. To understand how photon-counting CT works and why it holds the promise to shake up radiology, it helps to know how regular CT scanners operate. GE William CoolidgeGE’s William Coolidge invented what is considered the modern X-ray tube. He also developed an early portable X-ray machine. Coolidge’s X-ray machine (shown here in 1918) was used in military hospitals during World War I. Image credit: Museum of Innovation and Science Schenectady. First introduced some 50 years ago, CT scanners use X-rays to make crosssectional images of the human body, slicing it virtually like a loaf of bread.

They use detectors to make billions of measurements per second of the total intensity of the X-rays passing through the patients and then use the information to reconstruct images of the inside of the body. With a CT scanner, you could see the number, size and position of the holes in a loaf of bread without actually cutting it open. And physicians can spot a tumor mass inside a patient’s body. But even CT scanners may run up against limits like resolution and radiation dose.

(CZT), which work well in nuclear imaging. But it was a difficult journey. “I remember when I first joined GE Research, some detector experts argued that photon counting will never work while others were saying the opposite, and they kept pushing and pushing,” De Man said.

Enter photon-counting CT technology, which does a few things differently.[5] Rather than just measuring the total intensity that comes through, the detector counts individual X-ray photons and determines each photon’s energy. “It’s not very different from an ordinary camera for visible light,” Danielsson said. “It’s just that the energy is higher. We count all of the photons and measure their energy one by one, providing more information which is an advantage for physicians when they read the reconstructed the images to look for potential cancers and other diseases.”

Eventually GE scientists built the world’s first photon-counting CT prototype, using a CZT detector. GE unveiled it in 2006 and used it to scan patients the year after as part of a clinical research study. In the meantime, many research groups around the world had also started to explore photoncounting CT using the same materials for detectors.

De Man says that it is each photon’s quantitated energy information that allows the CT scanner to characterize tissues inside the body more accurately than with traditional technologies. “This is the first big benefit,” he says. “We are not just imaging the density of materials, but we can evaluate what materials compose the tissues. This type of information can aid doctors in their diagnosis for a wide range of disease states.”

But the photon-counting scanner never took off; the main limitation was the detector material. “We always knew that cad-tell CdTe and CZT had their challenges,” De Man says. “They are really great materials for nuclear medicine, where the count rate requirements are not as high as in CT. But for CT the requirements are just too high. Impurities lead to instabilities and to limits on the count rate — how fast you can count photons.” The GE team had always liked silicon because of its purity and also because the semiconductor industry has largely worked out how to mass-produce parts made from the material. But making a CT detector from it was a long shot. The biggest challenge, perhaps, involved silicon’s relatively poor ability to stop the arriving X-ray photons. Where the CZT modules were just a few millimeters deep, the silicon version had to be much deeper.

The second important step forward, De Man says, involves the size of the individual detector cells. Building on Prismatic Sensors’ silicon breakthrough, the team has assembled the detector from thousands of tiny silicon modules, each a fraction of the size of the existing industry-standard detector cell size. “Normally a CT image has about half-millimeter resolution, but now the spatial resolution can potentially be twice or three times as good, which is important for visualizing even the smallest features,” he says. The detector also counts the arriving photons digitally — one, two, three — an approach that allows the team to potentially reduce image noise and improve image clarity and may enable reducing the radiation dose. “We believe we can virtually eliminate the impact of electronic noise,” De Man said. “We measure each photon and its energy so we can assign a weighting to it. For example, this will allow the user to emphasize the low-energy photons, which carry more information and potentially improve the contrast-to-noise ratio in the images.”

But then, in 2015, a chance encounter brought GE scientists together with Danielsson, who flipped the problem on its head — or rather, on its side. He and his colleagues figured out that turning the silicon modules sideways — on the edge — and measuring the Compton interactions so they could contribute to the image solved the problem. “It wasn’t until we heard about the edge-on approach that Mats and the Prismatic Sensors team came up with that the major challenge was addressed so we can use silicon and still detect all X-rays,” De Man said.

But the silicon detector was just one part of the puzzle. The team includes experts in mathematics, statistics and even quantum physics. They developed software that processes the billions of measurements and turns the captured and counted photons into a picture that a doctor can understand. “All these underlying algorithms are complex, but if you do it cleverly, you can extract as much information as possible,” De Man said.

For his part, Danielsson is looking forward to Prismatic Sensors becoming part of the big GE family. “Over those years, we really got to know the GE team extremely well,” he says. “We’re working very close together. So we got used to solving difficult problems and getting work done together.”

This is a long way from where the project began. Scientists at GE Research started looking at photon-counting detectors in the early 1990s. They experimented with building detectors from materials like cadmium-telluride (CdTe) and cadmium-zinc-telluride

GE Healthcare expects to close the acquisition of Prismatic Sensors by January 2021. It has held a minority position in the company since 2017.

“The November Manufacturing PMI® registered 57.5 percent, down 1.8 percentage points from the October reading of 59.3 percent. This figure indicates expansion in the overall economy for the seventh month in a row after a contraction in April, which ended a period of 131 consecutive months of growth. The New Orders Index registered 65.1 percent, down 2.8 percentage points from the October reading of 67.9 percent. The Production Index registered 60.8 percent, a decrease of 2.2 percentage points compared to the October reading of 63 percent. The Backlog of Orders Index registered 56.9 percent, 1.2 percentage points higher compared to the October reading of 55.7 percent. The Employment Index returned to contraction territory at 48.4 percent, 4.8 percentage points down from the October reading of 53.2 percent. The Supplier Deliveries Index registered 61.7 percent, up 1.2 percentage points from the October figure of 60.5 percent. The Inventories Index registered 51.2 percent, 0.7 percentage point lower than the October reading of 51.9 percent. The Prices Index registered 65.4 percent, down 0.1 percentage point compared to the October reading of 65.5 percent. The New Export Orders Index registered 57.8 percent, an increase of 2.1 percentage points compared to the October reading of 55.7 percent. The Imports Index registered 55.1 percent, a 3-percentage point decrease from the October reading of 58.1 percent.” Fiore continues, “The manufacturing economy continued its recovery in November. Survey Committee members reported that their companies and suppliers continue to operate in reconfigured factories, but absenteeism, short-term shutdowns to sanitize facilities and difficulties in returning and hiring workers are causing strains that will likely limit future manufacturing growth potential. Panel sentiment, however, is optimistic (2.5 positive comments for every cautious comment), an improvement compared to October. Demand expanded, with the (1) New Orders Index growing at strong levels, supported by the New Export Orders Index expanding strongly, (2) Customers’ Inventories Index at its lowest figure since June 2010 (35.8 percent), a level considered a positive for future production, and the (3) Backlog of Orders Index expanding at a slightly faster rate compared to the previous three months.

Consumption (measured by the Production and Employment indexes) contributed negatively (a combined 7-percentage point decrease) to the Manufacturing PMI® calculation, with five of the top six industries continuing with moderate to strong output expansion. The Employment Index contracted after a single month of growth, primarily due to the inability to attract and retain direct labor. Inputs — expressed as supplier deliveries, inventories and imports — continued to indicate input-driven constraints to production expansion, at higher rates compared to October, as indicated by minimal gains in inventory levels and a softening of imports. Input improvement stalled compared to October and contributed marginally to the Manufacturing PMI® calculation. (The Supplier Deliveries and Inventories indexes directly factor into the Manufacturing PMI®; the Imports Index does not.) Prices continued to expand at higher rates, reflecting a clear shift to seller pricing power. “Among the six biggest manufacturing industries, five (Fabricated Metal Products; Chemical Products; Computer & Electronic Products; Transportation Equipment; and Food, Beverage & Tobacco Products)

registered solid growth in November. “Manufacturing performed well for the sixth straight month, with demand, consumption and inputs registering growth, but at slower rates compared to October. Labor market difficulties, both current and anticipated, at panelists’ companies and their suppliers will continue to dampen the manufacturing economy until the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis ends,” says Fiore. Of the 18 manufactur ing industries, 16 reported growth in November, in the following order: Apparel, Leather & Allied Products; Nonmetallic Mineral Products; Textile Mills; Wood Products; Electrical Equipment, Appliances & Components; Fabricated Metal Products; Plastics & Rubber Products; Primary Metals; Chemical Products; Machinery; Computer & Electronic Products; Paper Products; Miscellaneous Manufacturing; Transportation Equipment; Furniture & Related Products; and Food, Beverage & Tobacco Products. The two industries reporting contraction in November are: Printing & Related Support Activities; and Petroleum & Coal Products. A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

Vigor, Daimler in agreement on $40M-plus Superfund work at Swan Island Basin The Portland Harbor Superfund cleanup is set to take a big step forward on one of its most challenging sites, the Swan Island Basin.

Vigor Industrial and Daimler Trucks North America have joined with the city of Portland, state of Oregon and Port of Portland in an agreement to design a cleanup plan for the site at an expected cost of between $40 million and $50 million. “We’re excited to see this big piece of the puzzle for the entire site falling into place,” AnnieVon Burg, environmental policy manager for Portland’s Bureau of Environmental Services, said. “We see this as a good story and good progress.” Under the deal negotiated with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Vigor and Daimler will complete the work, whichVon Burg characterized as “engineered blueprints” for dredging, capping and different degrees of enhanced or monitored recovery of contaminated sediment. Portland and the state will each contribute $3.6 million toward the cost, and the port will pay $12 million. All the parties have potential liability at the Superfund site. Swan Island Basin is one of the last areas in the harbor to enter into an agreement with EPA for remedial design since the agency in late 2018 told potentially responsible parties to get moving or face enforcement actions. “The size and complexity of this area caused extended negotiations, but an agreement has been reached,” the city said in an impact statement included in the proposal that will go before the City Council. This the ninth agreement by the city to contribute to remedial design work as the decades-long cleanup process picks up steam. Two other Superfund-related items are on the City Council agenda for Wednesday: one measure that would finalize $5.5 million in contracts for technical work by two firms, and a second to finalize a $1.65 million contract for legal support related to the city’s harbor liability. The majority of companies noted that they were also able to provide access to online training options for staff development and in many cases even staggered shifts within their facilities to reduce the number of staff on site during the same period, thus mitigating the potential for Covid-19 outbreaks and spread. Manufacturers indicated the bulk of positions available and in high demand, require a very basic level of education as a starting point and yet provide significant upward mobility within the industry. Companies also report they provide additional training and support for their employees so they stay in the industry, grow their skillsets and advance their careers. Some of the most sought-after skills that employers identified were around (1) basic tool maintenance; (2) LEAN management practices and principles, (3) blueprint reading/basic math, and finally (4) soft skills around basic workforce readiness, attendance and punctuality.

Workforce Collaborative Connects Job Seekers To Competitive Manufacturing Industry By Greg Goloborodko Over the course of the past several weeks, the Columbia-Willamette Workforce Collaborative, consisting of the three workforce boards representing southwest Washington, Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas counties, has been surveying local manufacturers to assess how they have been impacted by the pandemic and identify areas where support is needed from the workforce development system. Workforce boards work to align publicly funded employment and training services available to job seekers with the skills needed by industry to remain competitive. In the last 10 years, with industry partners, the A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

These skillsets, along with OSHA certification and an overall interest within the manufacturing sector, provide incredible employment opportunities for anyone seeking a fulfilling career. While the entry level wages into support and production occupations start in the range of $17-$20 per hour, with continued on-the-job trainings and additional certifications individuals can move into a range of technical and highly skilled positions within a relatively short time. These pathways lead to increased wages and opportunities to build upon for advancement within this sector, as indicated by the median wage of $22 per hour. So why are manufacturers struggling to fill their o pen positions when unemployment is at a 10-year high? Despite adapting to employees’ needs by restructuring production hours, reducing the number of employees on site at a given time, companies are still seeing a shortage of applicants. On top of challenges created by the pandemic, manufacturing still struggles with the misperception that the jobs are low-paying, dangerous and in dirty work environments. The opportunity for manufacturers is in tackling the current disconnect between what the workers are seeking, and their perceptions around the sector overall. Exposing the community to manufacturing with virtual tours, day-in-the-life events and general outreach to job-seekers, could help break down some of these misconceptions and lead to more quality candidates.

(800) 481-6271 www.pmplating.com While growth is expected to slow for manufacturing occupations over the next decade, over 90,000 replacement openings are expected due to retirements and career changes. Nearly one-fourth of the sector’s workforce is 55 or older and set to retire in the next decade. At the same time, only about five percent of the sector’s workforce is aged 18-24, compared to 12 percent across all industries. With over two-thirds of all jobs within the sector only requiring a high school degree or equivalent, this sector provides one of the best on-ramps into a career pathway. Apprenticeships Continue to Prove Successful in Addressing Skills Gap As the U.S. Department of Labor announced the start of National Apprenticeship Week 2020, companies and educational institutes across the country are showcasing the “earn-and-learn” opportunities. “Apprentices have a crucial role to play in our ongoing economic recovery, and National Apprenticeship Week is a way for us to show the nation what they bring to the table,” said Assistant Secretary for Employment and Training John Pallasch in a statement. “Over and over again, they reinvigorate our workplaces with their vision and their commitment to their futures, and business leaders, educators,

state and local governments, and others across the nation are taking this week to recognize that achievement,” Pallash added. This year’s events will focus on both traditional Registered Apprenticeship Programs and newly created Industry-Recognized Apprenticeship Programs. In February of this year, the Department of Labor increased funding to the apprenticeship effort by awarding $100 million in grants to 28 public-private apprenticeship programs throughout the country through the “Apprenticeship: Closing the Skills Gap” program. “Companies across the country tell me their greatest challenge today is finding the skilled workers they need,” Secretary of Labor Eugene Scalia said when announcing the program. He also said that apprenticeship was a viable alternative to a traditional bachelor’s degree for Americans seeking “good-paying careers.” A study released in October demonstrates apprentices have the potential to earn salaries far exceeding their peers who only attended community colleges. This model has proven to be successful for many companies. For example, IBM has run a successful apprenticeship program through its IBM’s Pathways in Early College High School (P-TECH) program. P-TECH, along with the apprenticeships, have provided the foundational professional and technical skills these young people need for A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

“Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.” – Theodore Roosevelt It is much easier, enjoyable even, to work hard when we are positive, optimistic, and can look back at our day’s accomplishments with satisfaction. Gratitude comes to mind over and over because those experiences do not just happen. They are created by a personal inner mindset and bolstered by employers, managers and colleagues who know how to develop, nurture, and facilitate environments that foster and sustain happy and positive attitudes.
