It’s because these people radiate negativity. They drag you down by how they view the world.
So, are you a “glass half-full” or a “glass half-empty” kind of person? As it turns out, some people can be both. So-called realistic optimists combine the positive outlook of optimists with the clear-eyed perspective of pessimists, new research has found. These realistic optimists may get the best of both worlds, using their realism to perform better at work and elsewhere, but aren’t getting bogged down by unhappiness, said Sophia Chou, an organizational psychology researcher.

Announcements & Releases National Tooling and Machining Association Appoints Dean Bartles President The National Tooling and Machining Association (NTMA) announced the appointment of Dean Bartles, PhD as its new President. Bartles brings to NTMA almost four decades of experience in the manufacturing sector, most recently as the Director of the John Olson Advanced Manufacturing Center at the University of New Hampshire. Previously, he served as a President of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, President of the North American Research Institute, Founding Executive Director of the Digital Manufacturing & Design Innovation Institute and Founding Chairman of the Smart Manufacturing Leadership Coalition. Bartles also has extensive corporate experience and began his career working at various major manufacturing companies. For 13 years, he was Vice President and General Manager of the Ordnance and Tactical Systems Division at General Dynamics General, and earlier in his career held positions at Primex Technologies, Olin Ordnance, General Defense Corporation and Fairchild Republic Company. “Dean Bartles brings to NTMA a deep understanding of our industry and its importance to the economy,” said NTMA Chairman Mark Vaughn. “NTMA was established in part to help fill the manufacturing industry skills gap by tapping talented people for careers in our industry, and Dean’s years of experience at both manufacturing associations and companies gives him a unique perspective on this important issue. He has also earned a Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) from Nova Southeastern University and a Ph. D. in Technology Management with a concentration in advanced manufacturing systems from Indiana State University. NTMA is the national representative of the custom precision manufacturing industry in the United States. NTMA’s has 32 chapters throughout the U.S. and nearly 1,300 member companies that design and manufacture special tools, dies, jigs, fixtures, gages, special machines, and precision machined parts, representing more than $30 billion in sales annually. Renishaw opens Additive Manufacturing Demo Center in California
Renishaw, a leading manufacturer of advanced metal additive manufacturing (AM) systems, has opened a new Additive Manufacturing Demonstration Center in Newbury Park, California. Working in collaboration with Ibex Engineering, the Demonstration Center is situated within Ibex’s headquarters and allows visitors to explore, interact with and use Renishaw’s latest metal additive manufacturing systems. The center will be equipped to print highprecision titanium (Ti64Al4V) parts on Renishaw’s RenAM 500 series of laserpowder-bed-fusion AM systems. Ideal for industrial production applications, the RenAM 500 series allows for powder sieving and recirculation to be carried out automatically within the compact system, reducing the need for manual handling and exposure to materials. To provide a complete picture of the metal additive manufacturing process, the Center will also feature ancillary elements such as wet downdraft, heat treatment, support, machining and inspection technology, and part removal equipment. These components work in concert with the AM system to ensure parts are printed and finished to specifications. Also available at the site are InfiniAM Central software showcasing AM production reporting functionality and QuantAM build preparation software which allows visitors to work through the development of a AM machine build file, including material parameter development. Hurco Customer Starts YouTube Channel to Attract Millennials to Manufacturing Hurco customer Wade Moore, owner of Moore Engineering, will officially launch his newYouTube channel “MooreCNC” at IMTS 2018. In order to attract more people to machining, he started a YouTube channel to illustrate to his generation how cool and tech-oriented manufacturing really is. Wade started his shop in 2014 and does mostly short run jobs. Even though Wade is the great grandson of Richard Moore, of Moore jig borer fame, he wasn’t planning to start his own shop after he graduated from the University of Connecticut with a mechanical engineering degree. Entering the Chipmaker Challenge, a competition sponsored by Hurco at IMTS 2014, inspired him to control his future and pursue his dream. “Doing the Chipmaker Challenge is what really pushed me to make a business plan, and motivate myself to take a leap towards manufacturing as a full time job.” A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain•

Toyota’s investment is reminiscent of General Motors Co.’s $500 million bet on Lyft in early 2016 as part of a plan to jointly develop autonomous vehicles. That deal marked the first time a major car maker joined forces with a ride-hailing company. Months later, GM acquired startup Cruise Automation Inc., a maker of a system for retrofitting existing vehicles with autonomous-driving technology. That acquisition enabled GM to become an able competitor to Uber, Alphabet Inc.’s Waymo and others. Katz manages a plant at United Chemi-Con in Lansing, North Carolina, a village of about 150 people. The facility, which makes capacitors for industrial and consumer products, is covered by a foreign-trade zone based in Greensboro.Trade zones are areas in or near ports of entry under U.S. Customs and Border Protection supervision that are generally considered outside of CBP territory. With the blessing of the U.S. government, companies can import goods into the zone with reduced duties on a case-by-case basis.

Trade zones aren’t a loophole for avoiding Trump’s tariffs on products destined for the U.S. market, but they can be a way for companies to avoid duties on goods shipped to the U.S. and subsequently exported. Across America, companies are scrambling to respond to higher tariffs on the foreign goods in their supply chain. Since January,Trump has slapped duties on imported solar panels, washing machines, steel and aluminum, and $34 billion in Chinese goods. The administration said it will impose tariffs on a further $16 billion, and the president has threatened to tax effectively all the $500 billion in products the U.S. imports from China. Trump wants companies to build more factories in America, which he says
has been battered by the unfair trade practices of countries such as China. But overhauling supply chains is a costly decision that can take years to execute. In the short term, companies are looking for ways to get around paying the duties.Take foreign-trade zones. The federal program was launched in 1934, to help American companies shield themselves from the global trade war that followed the sweeping tariffs enacted by the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act. Since then, about 200 zones have popped up across the country, with $610 billion in shipments passing through them. In the case of United Chemi-Con, altering the activated area of the trade zone in North Carolina cost the firm about $20,000, Katz said.The move allows the company to import duty free the aluminum foil it uses to make capacitors, as long as they are exported from the zone.The company, with 150 employees in Lansing and 50 elsewhere in the U.S., is a unit of Nippon Chemi-Con Corp. in Japan. BoeingWins Big Navy Contract for Drones Boeing Co. won a major contract to build new drones for the U.S. Navy, the first in a series of Pentagon contests that could stem declining sales at the aerospace giant’s defense arm. The Pentagon said it picked Boeing following a three-way competition to build new MQ-25A Stingray drones that will fly from aircraft carriers to refuel combat jets. Analysts had said the program could give the winner an advantage in developing future unmanned systems for the military. Boeing hasn’t won a big, new Pentagon program in a competition since securing a deal in 2011 to build aerial tankers for the Air Force. It was the sole bidder to build the jets that will fly as the future Air Force One. The company beat out Lockheed Martin Corp. LMT 0.18% and General Atomics LLC to secure an initial $805 million deal to the first four Stingrays for the Navy. The service plans to buy an additional 72 of the drones for a total program cost of around $13 billion. The Stingray was originally conceived to carry weapons as well as provide refuelling capabilities, with later plans also envisaging its use for reconnaissance.The Navy then changed tack in a bid to speed development and keep costs down, focusing on the drones’ use for refuelling. Carrier-based aircraft are currently refueled with Boeing F/A18 combat jets. The first Stingray is expected to fly in 2021, entering service three years later. Northrop Grumman Corp , which developed a prototype that successfully landed and took off from an aircraft carrier, elected not to bid for the MQ-25A contract. A survey of 2,500 business respondents across 14 countries by Epicor Software Corporation showed that a little over half (54 percent) say that robots are a good solution for repetitive or mundane work. Of those polled, a relatively small 34 percent said that robots were more efficient than humans in the workplace.

already have their sights set on a specific career trajectory. “We had a high-school student who had three job offers and couldn’t take any of them because he was still in high school,” Winchester says.
Those aged 21-30 are the largest age group enrolled in the program. Among this group are numerous veterans of the U.S. armed forces. “These are students who have been in the work force and want to learn how to work smarter, not harder,” Winchester says. To program its CNC machinery, Davis Tech has used the Surfcam Traditional computer-aided-manufacturing (CAM) solution since the late 1990s. Once students master the basics of reading blueprints, reading and writing G-code, and using manual machinery, they move into the CNC realm. The college’s machine shop houses ten manual mills, ten manual lathes, and 10 CNC machine tools — including mills and lathes by Okuma, Mazak, Haas and Bridgeport. In response to a changing industry landscape that includes ever more advanced machinery, the shop will soon add an Okuma mill-turn machine to its lineup.

“A lot of our students like to work with their hands, so they want to design something, make it and put it together,” says Machine-Tool Technology Instructor Mark Dame, who has 25 years of teaching experience and joined the team at Davis Tech in 2010. “The mentality is that if you’re a machinist, you work in a dark, dingy shop. In reality, you work with million-dollar machinery and make things that lives depend upon.” The machine shop also offers 3D-printing capabilities and utilizes a coordinate measurement machine by Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence. Dame notes that the college has benefitted from the Okuma Partners in
THINC Program, through which multiple industry partners work with Okuma technical staff to ensure the seamless interoperation of technologies. Program coursework is generally delivered in a lab format, though Winchester and Dame customize content and conduct lectures to address particular needs. For instance, if students are struggling to master feeds and speeds, an instructor may deliver a lecture to address challenges. Among machining topics covered are drilling, pocketing, contouring, and cutter compensation, as well as machine setup and operation. Students spend the last three months of the program learning to operate CNC machinery programmed with Surfcam Traditional. As students exhibit different levels of computer literacy, programming coursework — like all other aspects of the program — are self-paced. However, virtually all students who are about to begin programming with Surfcam Traditional receive a three-day training introduction to the software. “I tell students that, to be successful in industry, you have to have mechanical aptitude and attention to detail — and you have to be a little bit of a perfectionist,” Winchester says. “Students who like to work with their hands and have an interest in how things work tend to be more successful from the start, but they can all be successful if they do the work.” It typically takes full-time students about nine months to complete the program, which requires 960 hours of shop time. Those who complete the program earn certificates and are then free to either join the workforce or to transfer to four-year universities to further their manufacturing education. Job fairs and community relations play a significant role in student job-placement, and companies such as SpaceX, Rolls Royce, racing company Detroit Diesel and numerous others have hired Davis Tech graduates. The college ensures that it teaches the latest shop-floor technologies to best prepare students for the workforce.
“We meet with industry several times a year to make sure that the tools that we use to teach our students are relevant and are going to prepare them for industry,” Hall says of efforts to ensure that content for manufacturing courses remains current. “Davis Tech stays connected to those employers. A lot of the time, our faculty are key to students being placed in jobs.” Winchester and Dame note that machine-tool technology training also opens up a lot of career options that students don’t necessarily think of when they enroll. Among those are machine-tool, cutting-tool and CNC software sales, as well as machine repair. “All of those areas can benefit from the abilities of our students,” Dame says. In addition to learning pertinent job skills, DavisTech students are taught workplace relations, job-seeking skills and resume writing, and they participate in mock job interviews to practice for the real thing. “It’s one of those really great symbiotic relationships: Students have objectives that they want to accomplish and our whole objective is to move them forward,” Hall says.” “We are very close to our students and work very closely with them, and they bring their own self-determination and goals to the table.”

households with incomes of at least $75,000 were satisfied with their pay, similar to the rate of their overall job happiness. In contrast, 29.4% of people surveyed with household incomes below $75,000 reported they were satisfied with their pay. The numbers tell “a tale of two economies,” said RickWartzman, a director at the Drucker Institute, an organization focused on leadership and management, and author of “The End of Loyalty:The Rise and Fall of Good Jobs in America.” In 2016, nearly half of American workers earned less than $30,000 a year, according to Social Security data reported by employers. Even so, satisfaction at work has improved for two years in a row among those with income under $75,000, while it dropped last year for those above that threshold.That may reflect a particularly tight labor market for lower-paid workers, who endured stagnant wages for years but have been seeing some faster wage gains than higher-paid workers.

Over the past seven years, Americans report feeling better about their pay along with a greater sense of job security, both features of an economy with a low unemployment rate and a long decline in layoffs. In July, jobless claims continued an extended post-recession slide and hit their lowest level in
nearly 50 years.

Nearly 58% of those with total household income above $75,000 report feeling satisfied at work, compared with around 45% of those from households earning less than $75,000. “These are higher-skilled workers, managers, and they tend to have more control over their day-to-day work activities,” said Rebecca Ray, leader of The Conference Board’s human capital practice. “Having more control can drive a lot of how you feel about the job.” The group surveyed approximately 1,500 workers about 23 separate topics, from paychecks to commutes. She was impressed that all the people who interviewed her had been at the company for at least five years. “I want to be somewhere for a long period of time, and I want to grow, so seeing a path was really important to me,” Ms. Flannery said. Magellan Aerospace officials signed a six-year agreement with Pratt & Whitney to manufacture aluminum castings for Next Generation Product Family (NGPF) engines powering the Airbus A320neo, Airbus A220 (formerly known as Bombardier C-Series), Embraer E2 series, and Mitsubishi MRJ aircraft. The castings will be produced at Magellan’s facilities in Haley, Ontario, Canada and Glendale, Arizona. The agreement is expected to generate approximately $62 million in revenue for Magellan through 2023.
“Once you’re really good at something, it’s very satisfying to be able to do it every day,” she said. Overall, The Conference Board survey shows that companies have made little or no progress in fixing internal processes, which rank among the least-liked aspects of work. Fewer than a third of workers are satisfied with their companies’ promotion policies, bonus plans, performance-review processes and education or training programs. Where U.S. Manufacturing Is Thriving In 2018 The ‘80s futurist John Naisbitt once called manufacturing a “a declining sport,” and to be sure the share of Americans working in factories has fallen far from the 1950 peak of 30% to roughly 8.5% last year.
Yet, manufacturing’s contributions to the economy are far out of proportion to its shrinking share of employment. In 2013, the manufacturing sector employed 12 million workers, but generated an additional 17.1 million indirect jobs. It has the largest multiplier of any economic sector: each dollar’s worth of manufactured goods generates $1.40 in output from other sectors of the economy. Perhaps most important may be the higher wages it provides for blue-collar workers.According to BLS data, goods-producing industries pays $56,799 a year on average during the latest period in our rankings—much higher than other fields like health care and education (averaging $45,676 annually) and leisure and hospitality ($20,879). To determine the places where manufacturing growth is the strongest, we looked at employment in the sector in 373 metropolitan statistical areas, assessing short-, medium- and long-term trends going back to 2006 and adding in variables for persistence and momentum. The results of these trends, based on three-month averages, are normalized and each MSA is assigned a score based on its relative position in each area. Tech hubs throughout the South and West are seeing a surge in tech development that’s boosting manufacturing employment, In No. 14 Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale, for example, the downtown core has seen a 318% increase in tech companies since 2012, with manufacturing employment in the area surging 5.5% last year to 127,100 jobs. Phoenix, as well as high-ranked places like Salt Lake City and Raleigh, N.C., boast the high-skill workforces and low-cost, business-friendly environments that companies are looking for with today’s increasingly tech-driven manufacturing processes. But much of the action in manufacturing remains in the industrial Midwest, and the news there is surprisingly good. Leading the pack is Grand Rapids-Wyoming, Mich., which places third on the strength of a 20.5% jump in industrial employment since 2012 to 115,700 jobs, a fifth of all non-farm jobs in the metro area.The Grand Rapids area boasts a vast array of 2,500 manufacturing companies in diverse industries, including metals, plastics, biopharmaceuticals, medical devices, production technology, automotive and food processing. Four out of five of them have less than 250 employees. Many other Rust Belt cities are also shining up. THE MARKETING CONTRARIAN Do you really need a brand standard? If you are working with a young marketing company or freelancer that is building a portfolio, that answer might often be “of course.” But that’s an answer that’s good for the marketing firm but not necessarily appropriate for your sales goals. Most of us in this business want great looking art to win awards and show to prospects. Completely rebranding a company is a plum assignment that involves a lot of billable work and recognition in the industry. But that doesn’t mean it’s the right thing to do for the customer. A large national company spent an enormous sum with a consulting firm for a brand standard and accompanying standards manual. The brand standard established graphics rules such as the location for logos in various media, type size and style for headlines, subheads, text and address information, and graphic elements such as color blocks and photo cropping. The manual showed how to create compliant branding for print, video, apparel, vehicles, packaging and anything else that carried the brand. This company makes products that are sold into various markets, and the standards manual specified that certain graphic elements should be in a particular color A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

for each market— an idea that at first blush seems like a good one. For example, market A should use red; market B, green; market C, blue, and so on. The idea was to use the design as a unifying element across the brand, and the color to designate the various market channels. Here’s the question apparently never asked: who is going to see enough of the variations to understand the system— or to even understand that there is a system? This company sells products into a number of niche markets that have very little overlap. As it turns out, the only people who would see most or all of the color versions are those who work for the company. The niche market customers would typically see one, or maybe two, versions of the system. Customers in market A will think the corporate color is red, while customers in market C will believe it’s blue— or maybe green, occasionally. The color system was later abandoned by yet another consulting firm several years later during the creation of yet another brand standard. So, what’s the point? The point is that focusing on uniformity at the expense of effectiveness can waste money and produce ineffective marketing. Creation of marketing assets under these complicated rules takes longer, costs more, and doesn’t necessarily speak to your various prospects in their language. If you are selling into markets that are insular, there is an argument to be made for designing and voicing materials that will work best in each one. If your materials are not graphically consistent across all markets, you and your marketing team will be the only ones who know. What is Metal Additive Manufacturing? An Intro & Benefits of AM 3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing (AM), is one of the most exciting manufacturing technologies talked about today.We are now seeing a wave of interest and enthusiasm for 3D printing with advances appearing across markets including consumer, industrial, automotive, aerospace, and medical. Lightweighting and parts consolidation are two very popular design applications of metal 3D printing. The end-use product improvements have been well-documented across a wide variety of industries, often resulting in much better weight-to-strength ratios and fuel efficiencies. Engineers and product designers can iterate on part designs quickly to test new ideas and concepts. Increasing the speed of innovation allows companies to get new products to market faster than ever before.This set of advantages has been particularly important in increasing the adoption rates of metal AM in recent years. It’s easy for companies to see the impact of being able to iterate freely and inexpensively. With 3D printing, it is possible to order only the quantities needed and with short turnaround times. U.S. Factory Activity Hits 14-Year High; Supply Constraints Rising U.S. manufacturing activity accelerated to more than a 14-year high in August, boosted by a surge in new orders, but increasing bottlenecks in the supply chain because of a robust economy and import tariffs could restrain further growth. The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) survey was at odds with another survey published last month that suggested a peak in manufacturing and pointed to a slowdown in the months ahead against the backdrop of a strong dollar. Recent surveys have also signaled a cooling in regional factory activity. “The surge in the ISM manufacturing index is difficult to square with other evidence, which indicate that growth in the factory sector has started to slow,” said Michael Pearce, a senior U.S. economist at Capital Economics in New York. “With export orders now waning as a result of the dollar’s rapid appreciation over the past few months, we still think that growth in the factory sector will slow in the coming quarters. The ISM said its index of national factory activity jumped to 61.3 last month, the best reading since May 2004, from 58.1 in July. A reading above 50 indicates growth in manufacturing, which accounts for about 12 percent of the U.S. economy. The ISM described demand as remaining “robust,” but cautioned that “the nation’s employment resources and supply chains continue to struggle.” According to the ISM, survey respondents were “again overwhelmingly concerned about tariff-related activity, including how reciprocal tariffs will impact company revenue and current manufacturing locations.” President Donald Trump’s “America First” trade policy has led to an escalating trade war with China and tit-for-tat import tariffs with other trading partners, including the European Union, Canada and Mexico. Trump has defended the duties on steel and aluminum imports and a range of Chinese goods as necessary to protect American industries from what he says is unfair foreign competition. Economists have warned that the tariffs could disrupt supply chains, undercut business investment and slow the economy’s momentum. The economy grew at a 4.2 percent annualized rate in the second quarter, almost double the 2.2 percent in the January-March period. The dollar .DXY rose against a basket of currencies, while prices of U.S. Treasuries fell. Stocks on Wall Street were trading lower.

Factories reported hiring more workers last month, with production increasing sharply. That bodes well for August’s employment report, which is scheduled to be released on Friday. Manufacturing payrolls have increased solidly this year. In the computer and electronic products industry, manufacturers said most suppliers were “waiting to re-evaluate potential price increases until September.” Machinery manufacturers said while raw material costs appeared to be “leveling off,” and most suppliers “are willing and able to suppress cost increases,” the impact of tariffs remained a concern. In a separate survey, data firm Markit said its U.S. manufacturing PMI fell to a nine-

Colorado’s energy industry -- fossil fuels as well as renewables -- will fare well, or at least be mostly unharmed, by the provisions of the federal tax-code overhaul awaiting the signature of President Donald Trump, say many observers.

And a $7,500 federal tax credit on the purchase of new electric vehicles also is part of the final bill, after being excluded from an early 6:33 AM version approved by the U.S. House of Representatives. For the oil and gas industry, the bill opens up new land for drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, much to the consternation of environmentalists, and also cuts the tax rates on master limited partnerships — a type of corporation that’s often used to build and operate pipelines. Jack Gerard -- the president of the American Petroleum Institute, an oil and gas industry trade group with a Colorado chapter -- hailed the final version of the bill. “Pro-growth reforms like strong cost-recovery provisions and a lower corporate rate can also drive innovations in new technologies to protect the environment and help provide affordable energy for consumers,” Gerard said.

federal wind Production Tax Credit, worth about $24 per megawatt of power produced over 10 years. The changes would have cut the credit to $15 per megawatt and sought to change the eligibility requirements. But the final bill kept the credit, along with its gradual phase-out that was part of a 2015 budget deal. The existing phase-out calls for the credit for new projects entering the construction pipeline to drop every year by 20 percent until the end of 2019, after which the credit for new projects drops to zero.

Vestas Wind Systems, the Danish wind turbine manufacturer with several Colorado factories, issued a statement saying it was “pleased that the approved tax bill retains the PTC phase-out” rather than ending the credit immediately. The company, which has four manufacturing plants and about 3,500 employees in Colorado, said the final version of the bill would “enable the further growth of the wind energy industry.” Frank Prager, Xcel Energy’s vice president of policy and federal affairs, said that Colorado’s largest power utility also is pleased with the final bill. Xcel, based in Minneapolis, has been working on plans to significantly grow its wind-energy portfolio across its eight-state territory. The company broke ground on the 600-megawatt Rush Creek wind farm in early 2017. “We are pleased that the final tax reform bill preserves the renewable tax credits and their planned phasedown and also reduces the overall tax rate,” Prager said. “This allows for our ongoing investment in clean, reliable and low-cost energy and will directly benefit our customers and the economy as a whole. appreciate the work Congress did to recognize the unique nature of our business as one of the most capital intensive in the country.” The final bill also keeps intact a gradual phase-out for tax credits for solar power projects, rather than ending the credits immediately, which was hailed by representatives of that industry. “There are political forces in Washington, D.C., who sought to use tax reform as a means to terminate our solar ITC [investment tax credit] and disadvantage our industry in other ways. By staying united and working together, our SEIA [Solar Energy Industries Association] and COSEIA member companies have achieved a victory for our industry and for our workers,” the Colorado Solar Energy Industries Association said in an email blast to its members. The wind and solar sectors also were able to change a provision to the Base Erosion Anti-Abuse Tax (BEAT), an area of the tax bill designed to prevent multinationals from shifting profits overseas that’s also popular with large companies that invest in renewable energy projects. Early versions of the bill excluded wind and solar power tax credits, reducing the value of the credits for large companies making big investments in renewable energy. “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” Author Unknown If you had a strong desire to perpetuate precision manufacturing in the United States, and you could clone one young person to help achieve this, high on your list should be Graydon Udelhoven. This young man, not yet 30 years of age, is not only a mechanically gifted entrepreneur, he exudes passion for our manufacturing industry. His enthusiasm is absolutely contagious and the Quotation, Author Unknown, speaks to Graydon’s philosophy. Graydon opened his fabrication business, which he named ‘Forbidn’, in August of 2012. Graydon was 22 when he launched the Billings, Montana, based business. He says, “Honestly, nothing specifically pointed me to owning my own business, but when I was attending high school through college, and fabricating components for a diesel company and then a chassis builder, I felt like I wanted my own niche, to design my own products, and not to be told what to do.” He added, “I also had such an appreciation and infatuation for machining, which I had experienced just a bit with manual machines in high school.” Prior to opening Forbidn, Graydon felt that a mechanical engineering degree would help him to achieve his goals. He attended the local community college in Billings and then went off to Bozeman to complete his degree in mechanical engineering. “I quit – in college I quickly realized most work being completed was theoretical; math problem after math problem that wasn’t applicable to a physical component solution sitting in front me. My mind works in a way I must constantly be testing theory against a physical environment, they were testing our determination more than our imagination and I work in the opposite.” Graydon had more ability than he gave himself credit for. He helped his grandfather Larry Udelhoven on his farm when he was growing up, fixing machinery that broke down. “I learned a lot from my grandfather, who was also a pilot and race car driver”, he adds. When asked how he came up with the company name ‘Forbidn’, Graydon chuckles. “I thought I was pretty cool in high school, and I thought the name signified developing products that were such high quality, so outstanding that they would be forbidden to gain. Also, I knew that if I created a company, I would need a website, and the website name should be simple and effortless to navigate – it should match the business name exactly and be available as a domain. I searched available domains at the time and Forbidn.com was available. It just worked out.” And so 22-year old Graydon launched Forbidn in an 1800 square foot building with a few manual machines, including a tube bender, a welder, and a sheet metal brake. who came to him, learning about him through word of mouth. Graydon quickly earned the reputation for his mechanical aptitude, where he could design a part, or re-engineer a factory component, and make a product that was better than the original. He was building a number of parts for a diesel customer, multiple parts that he had designed, he was sending out for machining. “Shops were giving me 4-6 week turnaround schedules, which didn’t work well, and then they were scrapping up to 20% of the parts.This wasn’t a good business model for me, so I decided to bring machining in-house.” (Note:Though Graydon was very mechanically gifted and quite skilled in fabrication, he had no experience in CNC machining). Just months after launching Forbidn, Graydon moved the business from its 1800 square foot facility into a larger building, at 4600 square feet; it would offer the space needed for the machines he would eventually purchase. “I was going after the power sports and job shop industry and it just so happened we ended up in the oil and gas industry”, Graydon says. Graydon called all the machine tool dealers who supported Montana, (Haas Automation, Okuma, DMG Mori, Makino, and Mazak) and he says only 2 came to his shop. “Klaus Lassig, Sales Engineer for Smith Machinery, was one of the two who made the visit. Here’s what sets Klaus apart from other sales guys. I was young and I wanted the coolest most advanced machine out there. I wanted the Mazak INTEGREX. Instead of selling it to me, Klaus talked me out of buying the machine, and we settled on the Mazak Vertical Machining Center (VTC-300).” Klaus says, “Graydon was young, he was ambitious, but without a background in machining, I knew that the Mazak INTEGREX was overkill for him, at least initially.” Graydon says, “I did get nervous about my decision when the MazakVTC-300 was being delivered. I talked to the driver, and I asked him if he frequently picked up Mazaks from machine shops that were closing down. The driver told me that when he delivered a new Mazak machine to a customer, the only thing he did down the road was deliver a 2nd and maybe a 3rd Mazak machine. He said he hadn’t ever picked up a Mazak from a shop that was going out of business, he just kept them coming.” Graydon says this helped solidify his decision, especially when even the truck driver knows of the Mazak euphoria.
Just a month after the Mazak VTC300 was installed, Sanjel USA, a leader in hydraulic fracturing equipment, came knocking on Forbidn’s door. “They were having trouble with a prototype part and they heard I had a Mazak. I told them I would take the job on, it was a difficult one, and it would force me to use the 4th axis on the new machine.” He continued, “Thanks to Smith’s AJ, (ArthurTucker, Applications Eng.), who helped me to truly learn the machine and take pride in operating it, we completed our first prototype part together with my lack of CNC technology. Sanjel was an outstanding customer for me until they closed their United States operations.” Forbidn struggled with the loss of their main customer until Graydon met John Gonitzke, CEO-Emeritus of Mark Rite Lines Equipment Company (MRL). “John shares my passion and imagination for designing products, and though he doesn’t have a machining background, we problem solve together from concept to reality.” He continued, “As a team we make it happen. MRL allows me to support their R&D efforts, where we either re-engineer existing products, or develop newer more innovative designs to preserve MRL’s reputation at the forefront of the most advanced pavement marking solutions in the world.” Business with Forbidn’s customers, particularly their largest customer, MRL, was so strong that Graydon couldn’t make parts fast enough. Between designing new products that pass vigorous testing during the R&D stage, and move to production, to keeping up with the current demand of present products, there wasn’t enough time in the day to satisfy the schedule. “With a very tight labor market, the only way I could increase my productivity was to purchase another Mazak machine”, he says, “and this time it was going to be a Mazak INTEGREX.” Late last year, Graydon purchased the Mazak INTEGREX i-200S from the Smith Machinery team. Klaus says, “The Mazak INTEGREX i-200S CNC Multi-Tasking machine combines a turning center and machining center for full 5-axis simultaneous machining and productive manufacturing. It is the fifth generation Mazak multi-tasking machine (with 2 spindles), and it offers a large machining area and high accuracy performance.” He adds, “This time when Graydon specified this machine for the growth of his business, I knew he was ready for it.” Graydon says, “The INTEGREX has changed our business. For one part with 177 operations, we are doing 156 of the operations on the main spindle, and then the remaining 21 operations take place after the part transfer to the sub-spindle. For this part (that starts as a 5’ stainless steel bar), you are handling the part 1 time, with the benefit of Mazak’s DONE IN ONE technology the part is transformed from the solid bar in the main spindle to a finished component in the sub spindle in one setup.” He continues, “This has drastically reduced my part handling and setup times, and along with utilizing the full 5 axis simultaneous moves, I am able to make Swarf cuts on the part in 1/16th of the time it took me to 3 axis simultaneous machine certain features in my VTC-300.” This same part, on the Mazak VTC-300, Graydon was machining 12 parts in 7 days.Today, his Mazak INTEGREX i-200S machines 6 of these parts in 1 day. Graydon says these efficiencies enabled him to bring the pricing down for his customers. Graydon says, “The Mazak machines are fascinating. When you go to Florence, Kentucky to the Mazak manufacturing plant, you will see Mazak machines cutting parts to make the next Mazak machine. Mazak uses its own machines to build its customers’ machines because they offer tight tolerance and high accuracy. Mazak believes in their machines and they take pride in every one of them that goes out the door to a lucky customer, and that is evident by taking a quick glance across the 800,000 square foot Kentucky facility, all you see is orange.” He continued, “We were the first machine shop in Billings, Montana to buy a Mazak machine, and when people find out you have a machine of this caliber, those who know, appreciate the technology and quality of a Mazak, they take satisfaction in knowing their parts were carved by a Mazak. I can’t keep the
machines at idle on the weekends with the demand we have.” Graydon works nearly around the clock, and this includes almost every weekend, both on Saturday and Sunday. He says, “If I have a question or I am unsure about how to proceed on the Mazak, I will call our Smith Machinery applications engineer AJ.” He continued, “Thankfully AJ almost always answers the phone and helps me to work through the issue, and of Smith Machinery overall, I have to say that the support I receive from Klaus, to Clark Smith, owner of the company, to AJ, is beyond excellent, it is second to none.” Graydon adds that he will not look outside of Smith Machinery for his machine tool needs, given what they have done for him. When Graydon was a kid (5 years ago), he loved racing cars on 1/4-mile stretches. Bye Aerospace Is Positioning To Be A Leader In Electric-Powered Airplanes Electric vehicles have taken the roadways by storm.The next frontier is the air.A first mover, Bye Aerospace has flown a prototype of its electric plane at Centennial Airport in Englewood, Colorado, and is hoping to get Federal Aviation Administration certification by 2020.The market is primed: The company already has orders for 130 of the planes. Bye isn't alone in his view of the opportunity to put electric airplanes in the sky. Among those who have expressed an interest are Boeing, Airbus, Siemens, and several smaller companies, including Uber and a firm financed by Larry Page, co-founder of Google. Some are looking at hybrid airplanes using electrical and gasoline power and others at electrical only. Bye is targeting a select market for his electric airplane: the airplanes typically used by aviation schools to train new pilots. The Aspen Flying Club, based at Centennial Airport, has ordered 30 of the planes, the Bye Sun Flyer 2, and Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology, which has several U.S. schools including one in Denver, has ordered 20 more. Bye points to research done by Boeing this year that projected the demand for pilots will double over the next 20 years. But, he says, learning to fly is so costly that many prospective pilots can't afford it. "Eighty percent of student pilots drop out," he says, "and the number one reason cited is the cost of flying. "There's a great market [for new pilots] but also a great problem to solve in helping these student make it through." Operating costs for the Sun Flyer 2 are an order of magnitude lower than the traditional piston-engine trainers, says Bye, "with no carbon emissions and significantly reduced noise.We are excited about the future and the potential the Sun Flyer family of aircraft has to revolutionize general aviation, providing improved affordability and accessibility." The Sun Flyer 2 will be able to fly about three hours on a battery charge, providing two or three flight training sorties without recharging. With a supercharger a full charge can be achieved in as little as 20 minutes. The FAA has announced its support for the development of electric airplanes under its new Part 23 rules. Bye says he expects the Sun Flyer will be certified by mid-2020. "We've had great meetings with them and they're trying to be very helpful.They view the benefits in a positive way." In addition to the Sun Flyer family of airplanes, Bye Aerospace also is developing a solar-powered airplane, the StratoAirNet.The plane, which has been ground-tested, is being developed as an unmanned aerial vehicle although it could have a pilot.The wing-mounted solar cells come from SolAero Technologies Corp. of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Bye says the StratoAirNet, which could fly up to 35,000 feet, would initially be used for surveying and patrolling. Customers would come from industries like agriculture and fishing. "We may have customers as early as next year," he says.by Brad Smith

Small business loan approval rates for big banks have spiked. According to a new study, the August approval percentage for banks — with assets of $10 billion and more — rose two-tenths of a percent from July’s figure of 26.3 percent to 26.5 percent. The data, published last month by Biz2Credit, examine more than 1,000 credit applications made by small businesses.

It’s a lighthearted effort by Minnesota-based Alexandria Industries to introduce middle and high school students — as well the general public — to manufacturing. While the name is humorous, it belies an issue that is anything but.The component manufacturing company, with about 550 employees roughly two hours north of the Twin Cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis, faces an acute problem affecting many rural manufacturers: a shortage of workers to fill skilled and unskilled positions. The company, which supplies manufacturers in the medical, automotive and defense industries, among others, has at least 50 unfilled jobs, and its predicament is not unusual. “It doesn’t matter whether the company is in Michigan, Utah, Texas or Colorado,” said Tom Schabel, chief executive of Alexandria Industries. “One of the top issues is the difficulty of finding people.” Skilled positions can remain open for months and even unskilled positions can take 60 days to fill, he said. Shortages may seem counterintuitive, given the widespread fear that automation, robotics and offshoring have all reduced employment in manufacturing. While jobs in absolute numbers have declined from a decade ago, the sustained economic recovery, a lack of skilled workers and the retirement of many baby boomers have led to open positions. But up to 2 million skilled jobs could go unfilled by 2025, according to a 2015 report (the most recent data available) from the Manufacturing Institute, a nonprofit affiliate of the National Association of Manufacturers. To address the shortages, manufacturers, as well as state and local governments, are increasing recruiting efforts.Although no statistics are available to analyze their effectiveness, these measures include higher wages, tax incentives for those relocating and the forgiveness of student loans, as well as enhanced training for students, new recruits and current employees. Companies are also offering perks like on-site day care and health care. Alexandria Industries, for example, offers a free health clinic within a block of its facility. “While it was initially an attempt to deal with escalating health care costs, it is increasing a recruiting and retention tool” for workers and their families, Schabel said. Employers like 114-year-old Wigwam Mills, based in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, offer cash bonuses to employees who bring in new recruits who stay at least 60 days, saidThomasWheeler, president and chief executive. Another stopgap measure is to increase overtime. In Minnesota, Schabel said, getting employees to work extra hours is usually not difficult during the winter. Summer, however, is another story, when residents take advantage of the nearby lakes and rivers. As a result, Alexandria Industries recently introduced a program in which every employee, including Schabel, was required to work eight hours of overtime per month. Many companies, in addition, are encouraging their graying workforce to postpone retirement or, in some cases, return to work as consultants or part-time contractors. To appeal to a younger generation, some companies are promoting greater collaboration among teams as well as renovating their cafeterias and even installing amenities like pool tables. Most important,Wheeler added, “while we need to create an environment that is safe and well run with competitive compensation and benefits, that alone isn’t enough.We also need to offer a path for career growth.” Local state and municipal governments are also adopting financial incentives to entice workers to move or return to their rural roots. Colorado Jump Start is a state-run program that waives income taxes for those who relocate to rural areas of the state for four years. Businesses that locate in distressed areas can obtain relief from a range of state and local taxes for up to four years. Kansas has a two-pronged approach. It has declared 77 counties as rural opportunity zones, and workers relocating to any of those areas may qualify for help with student loan repayment up to $15,000 or may be eligible for a state income tax waiver up to five years. Vermont recently enacted legislation to pay up to $10,000 for those relocating to the state who work remotely for companies based elsewhere. Longer term, both private companies and state and local governments are focusing on training, whether on site or by partnering with local secondary schools as well as nearby colleges.
