Editors Corner
I have to admit, I invariably root for the underdog. As I watched the MinnesotaVikings play the Philadelphia Eagles to determine who would go to the Superbowl, I wanted the Eagles to win. Not because I’m an Eagles fan (I am not), but because their win would be against odds. If you watched the game, you too observed a remarkable performance from Nick Foles. Filling in for injured MVP candidate Carson Wentz, Foles delivered the best single-game performance by any Eagles quarterback this season by both passer rating and QBR. He finished the game with 352 yards and three touchdowns. In the second half, he went 11-of-11 for 159 yards and two touchdowns, which was good for both a perfect passer rating (158.3) and QBR (99.9).Wow! We’ll know the outcome of Superbowl VII as this magazine mails, but I’ll be cheering for the underdog again. Go Eagles! Professional and Olympic athletes all share the gift of athleticism, and though they invariably were born with a gift, they had to have the will and drive to make it happen. I was curious about NFL athletes who, even more remarkably, excelled despite illnesses/handicaps. Here are a few. Derrick Coleman of the Seattle Seahawks is deaf. Since both of his parents were born with a missing hearing gene, Coleman lost his hearing early on in life, but did not let that stop him. Derrick can read lips and uses this skill to succeed in the game. Off the field he is an advocate for children with disabilities.
Samari Rolle was a veteran in the NFL when he joined the Baltimore Ravens in 2005. The former All-Pro cornerback missed five of the first ten games of the 2007 season due to an undisclosed illness. The team later found out Rolle was suffering from epileptic seizures. Although Rolle claimed he had experienced smaller seizures for two years before that, the 2007 episodes were severe enough for him to publicly acknowledge the problem and seek proper treatment. Rolle returned later that season, and played until he retired in 2010. David Garrard spent 12 seasons in the NFL, eight of them with the Jacksonville Jaguars. From 2007-2010, he served as the team’s starting quarterback. Throughout his career, Garrard suffered from Crohn’s Disease, an incurable form of inflammatory bowel disease marked by abdominal pain, diarrhea, skin rashes, and arthritis. In November 1970, Saints kicker Tom Dempsey set the record for the longest field goal in a regular season game at the time (63 yards). The record stood for 43 years. What makes that feat so special?Well, Dempsey was born without toes on his right foot! Dempsey played for the Saints, the Eagles, the Rams, the Oilers, and the Bills over his 10-year NFL career. He kicked 159 field goals, all while wearing a specialized football cleat with an enlarged, flattened front surface to compensate for his disability. Mark Herzlich didn’t have a long NFL career, but the fact that he had one at all is a minor miracle. Mark was a first team All-American in 2008 and All-ACC linebacker for Boston College. In 2009, 22-year-old Herzlich announced that he had Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. Amazingly, he was declared cancer-free that September, and returned to BC the following season. In 2011, the NewYork Giants signed Herzlich as an undrafted free agent. Since his debut against the Philadelphia Eagles that season, he has collected over 150 tackles, won a Super Bowl Ring, and authored a book “What it Takes: Fighting For My Life and My Love of the Game.” If Herzlich’s story of survival doesn’t inspire you, I’m not sure what will. We all don’t suffer from serious illnesses nor are we all gifted athletes. But we all have times in our lives when we must prevail when the odds are stacked against us. Let us all help others when they are going through challenges that can seem insurmountable. And as always, God bless our troops!

Final Tax Bill Passes Congress In a major lobbying victory for One Voice, on December 20, 2017, the House and Senate sent to the President for his signature a bill to significantly change the U.S. tax code for the first time in over 30 years. Thanks to the efforts of One Voice members, who for many years sought lower rates and stronger investment provisions, this is a major change not seen in decades. While no stakeholders secured everything they wanted, policymakers heard our calls to create a code that incentivizes domestic manufacturing. Small and medium-sized manufacturers who invest heavily in equipment in particular stand to benefit from many of the bill’s provisions. Although disappointed that State and Local Tax deductions are not treated more fairly in the final bill and many provisions are temporary, this legislation remains a landmark step for OneVoice members, who have made it clear that tax reform is a top priority. Key provisions in the bill include: Corporate rate of 21%, effective January 1, 2018 Top individual rate of 37%, with 20% deduction for business earnings of pass-throughs No corporate alternative minimum tax Full 100% business expensing for five years Section 179 Equipment Expensing at $1 million

WSF-M is designed to mitigate three high priority DoD Space-Based Environmental Monitoring (SBEM) gaps: ocean surface vector winds, tropical cyclone intensity and LEO energetic charged particles. This new environmental satellite system leverages the Ball-built Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Microwave Imager (GMI) instrument, which is the on-orbit reference standard for calibrating precipitation measurements in NASA’s GPM constellation. The WSF-M bus will be based on the Ball Configurable Platform, a proven, agile spacecraft with 50 years of on-orbit operations for affordable remote sensing applications. Ball has played key roles on numerous national and international programs that make critical measurements of the physical environment. These include designing and building the weather spacecraft for both the recently launched Joint Polar Satellite System-1 (JPSS-1) and for the Suomi National Polarorbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP). Among the many aspects of the partnership, Under Armour will utilize EOS 3D technology for printing powder-based parts, and the two companies will work in concert on polymer powder development and on advanced laser sintering platform development. Under Armour will also 6:33 AM collaborate with EOS’ Additive Minds expert services to elevate its AM program. To highlight the partnership at Formnext, the two companies featured an Under Armour display showcasing UA ArchiTech Futurist footwear. In 2017, Adidas announced it was partnering with Silicon Valley-based tech company Carbon to create Futurecraft 4D’s midsole, a 3D-printed sole. Digital Light Synthesis is a process pioneered by Carbon that uses digital light projection, oxygen-permeable optics and programmable liquid resins to generate high-performance, durable polymeric products. Futurecraft 4D is Adidas’s first application of the Digital Light Synthesis, and represents the brand’s step into athlete-data driven design and manufacturing. According to Carbon, its “unique programmable resin platform offers unparalleled performance with respect to material durability and elastomeric responsiveness.” Adidas plans to produce 100,000 pairs by end of 2018. Nike is also exploring 3D-printed footwear. Footwear News reported in 2017 that Nike is beginning to use 3D printing to develop shoe prototypes, according to the French 3D printing company Prodways. The publication wrote: Prodways’ 3D-printed outsoles, midsoles and insoles, which are made from thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) material, are meant to decrease manufacturing time for the sneaker giant while also providing higher performance for wearers.

Although Nike has not announced plans to release 3D-printed shoes to consumers yet, its executives are praising the quality of Prodways’ material, as well as the speed of manufacturing the product. Nike isn’t a stranger to 3D-printed shoes, although it’s been on a smaller scale for professional athletes. For instance, in 2014, the company released a 3D-printed cleat plate built for the shuttle drill. It also produced a 3D-printed shoe built for linear speed in the 40-yard-dash. In 2016, New Balance released Zante Generate, a running shoe with a full-length 3D-printed midsole.Through an exclusive collaboration with 3D Systems, the company utilized the company’s laser sintering powder, DuraForm TPU Elastomer to make significant advancements in the performance of printed parts for running shoes. For the Zante Generate midsole, New Balanced used selective laser sintering (SLS).The first release wasn’t available for mass consumption; there were only 44 pairs total.

Denver makes Amazon’s HQ2 short list The Seattle-based e-commerce giant released its list of 20 cities that could end up with the company’s coveted new $5 billion second headquar ters campus that eventually will employ 50,000 people. The 20 cities were picked out of 238 across North America that submitted proposals, Amazon said. “Getting from 238 to 20 was very tough – all the proposals showed tremendous enthusiasm and creativity,” said Amazon spokesperson Holly Sullivan, in a statement. Here’s what Amazon said comes next: “In the coming months, Amazon will work with each of the candidate locations to dive deeper into their proposals, request additional information, and evaluate the feasibility of a future partnership that can accommodate the company’s hiring plans as well as benefit its employees and the local community. Amazon expects to make a decision in 2018.” Other cities making the cut were: Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Miami, Montgomery County, Maryland, Nashville, Newark, New York City, northernVirginia, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Raleigh,Toronto, and Washington D.C. There are now 40,000 employees at its 33-building, 8.1 millionsquare-foot Seattle campus. “In addition to Amazon’s direct hiring and investment, construction and ongoing operation of Amazon HQ2 is expected to create tens of thousands of additional jobs and tens of billions of dollars in additional investment in the surrounding community,” the company said in September. It said that the jobs at HQ2, mostly in software development, will pay an average of more than $100,000 annually. Amazon said it needs a complete second headquarters to keep up with the company’s rapid growth and hiring. The company called for responses to a request for proposals (RFP) from state and local government leaders interested in being the location for the company headquarters. Colorado quickly mounted a bid, with the Metro Denver Economic Development Corp. leading the effort. In its bid, submitted in October, Metro Denver EDC officials sent Amazon a list of eight potential locations for the headquarters A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain • RockyMtnSaw-Flyer.indd 1

State officials said they focused on the region’s workforce talent when making their pitch to Amazon, but they did not disclose key details of the bid, such as where the eight proposed sites are located. While Amazon has long been delivering packages in Colorado, in September 2017 it greatly expanded its physical footprint in the state when it opened a 1,000-worker, 1-million-square-foot “fulfillment center” in Aurora, where it already had a 452,000-square-foot “sortation center.” In June, Amazon said it would build a three-story, 2.4 millionsquare-foot fulfillment center in Thornton to open in mid-2018. In August, the online retailer bought Whole Foods Market, gaining its brick-and-mortar stores as well as a distribution center in Aurora. The natural grocery chain opened a splashy new store near Denver Union Station in November. And in September, Amazon dropped a stunning piece of news when it announced an open competition for a North American city to host a new, second headquarters campus as big as the one that had transformed its hometown of Seattle. Metro Denver was among the cities that submitted a bid, keeping key aspects of its proposal a secret. Amazon’s announcement comes one day after California-based Apple Inc. announced its own plans for a new U.S. corporate campus. Apple did not identify a targeted city for its new campus, which was announced as part of a plan to increase the company’s workforce across the United States by 20,000 employees over the next five years.

Michel Merluzeau, a Seattle-based aerospace analyst, praised the acquisition and predicted Boeing may soon respond as jet makers move to help their airline clients grapple with a critical global pilot shortage — and boost profits at the same time. “The move is quite timely,” Merluzeau said. “I would not be surprised to see Boeing also move to expand its own offerings in this space in the not-too-distant future.” Airbus thinks its new business offers significant growth potential and plans to double the facility in a few years, said Laurent Martinez, the head of Airbus services business. “Our global services forecast predicts a need for 122,000 new pilots in the Americas by 2035, representing 23 percent of the world’s

skilled trades industry provides – both physically/ mentally challenging and financially rewarding.
Airbus said its new facility will train future pilots for airlines that buy new or operate current Airbus jets.
Increased enrollment for skilled trades education: In 2018, there will be an uptick in enrollment for students entering the skilled trades industry. Because of the price increase of traditional colleges and universities, the return on investment for some students is becoming more limited and scarce.
Jet makers are stepping into the training services sector with some self interest: they must control and maintain high standards for pilot training to ensure unqualified flyers don’t get into the cockpit, crash and hurt the industry’s reputation. Until now, Airbus has provided training in North America primarily from its Miami, Florida-based training center. Boeing also trains pilots in Miami after shifting such operations away from the Seattle region
Stratatech Education Group 2018 Predictions For The Skilled Trades Industry And Education StrataTech Education Group focuses on the education, growth and development of specialized career education schools, particularly skilled-trade programs designed to address the nation’s growing infrastructure needs. Improved focus on STEAM education: The educational landscape is progressively moving more towards a STEM or STEAM based curriculum – science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. Initially the benefits of these programs were overlooked, but in 2018 we will see this curriculum sweeping across all facets of education. These tracks will continue to gain popularity as more students, parents and educators recognize the equitable and successful opportunities the
Additionally, Congress and other public officials are placing an emphasis on the skilled trades industry. With increased exposure into the opportunities that exist within skilled trades, we anticipate a corresponding increase in the number of students pursuing these careers through technical education. Growth of HVAC/R industry: Although the entire skilled trades industry will experience a rise in interest, HVAC and refrigeration enrollment and career placement will see the greatest growth in 2018. As more Baby Boomers retire and relocate to states with dry climates and relatively stable weather conditions, the need for refrigeration technicians will naturally increase. The figures suggest manufacturing strength will persist into early 2018, ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System even after the ISM’s semi-annual survey of purchasing managers published last month showed factories anticipate growth in capital spending to slow this year. The December monthly poll was taken before President Donald Trump signed the tax legislation, which provides companies with incentives to invest more, Fiore said in an interview. Bloomberg Economics’ assessment that the dip in the November ISM headline was a headfake proved accurate. This was due to the alleviation of bottlenecks following the hurricanes, whereby supplier deliveries weighed on the headline. The December results showed a payback for this effect. However, it was not just that, as enthusiasm for the tax reform bill’s passage bolstered business confidence. This may not be the end of the ISM’s climb, as both new orders and production posted further gains in the month. Business sentiment has been high enough for long enough that it is actually starting to drive the “hard data” in a positive direction. – Carl Riccadonna andYelena Shulyatyeva, Bloomberg Economics Sixteen of 18 industries reported growth in December, led by machinery and computer and electronic products; wood products and textile mills reported contraction ISM factory employment gauge declined to a still-strong 57 from 59.7 Measure of export orders increased to a six-month high of 58.5 from 56 Gauge of supplier deliveries climbed to 57.9 from 56.5, indicating

Will Millennials Change Manufacturing? Dark, dirty and dangerous – mention the 3Ds of old-time manufacturing and HR managers shudder. It’s exactly the image they don’t want the public – or millennials considering careers in manufacturing – to have of the industry. They want to be able to talk about an industry that is attractive and safe, innovative, even cool. So it must gladden the hearts of Lockheed Martin recruiters when Emilee Bianco talks about being “excited” to work at Lockheed Martin Space System’s facility in Sunnyvale, Calif. Bianco, 25, has been working on building solar arrays to power satellites. As a manufacturing engineer, Bianco takes design specifications, puts them into work instructions and then works to ensure that satellite hardware is built correctly. Though she has been working just over a year for Lockheed Martin, she has already been part of a transition to a new type of solar array that uses thin, flexible sheets in place of rigid panels. Bianco’s generation now makes up the largest in the United States – 83.1 million, according the U.S. Census Bureau versus 75.4 million baby boomers. Not surprisingly, millennials also make up the largest share of the American workforce – one in three workers is a millennial, the Pew Research Center reports. A s b a by b o o m e r s l e ave t h e workforce and millennials make up a more significant par t of it, many manufacturers believe that this generation will change manufacturing. “Millennials have already started changing the manufacturing and supply chains – and for the better,” says Kathie Karls-Bilski, HR director for 3M Supply Chain. For example, she says that supply chains are becoming more dig itized and millennials will foster that change because of their facility with new tech. “Their ability to transform organizations’ slow processes into fast, effective business success will help manufacturing and supply chain grow for years to come,” she asserts. That should be good news for manufacturers who are grappling with the Internet of Things and other new technologies. In a research study conducted by IndustryWeek earlier this year and sponsored by Emerson, manufacturing respondents said the industrial IoT will improve operations through real-time access to information and more tightly connected supply chains, but they pointed to personnel as the most important factor for success.
3M’s Karls-Bilski says millennials have a leg up not only with technology but also with their curiosity and creativity. “Millennials are also more likely and less hesitant to explore new skills and opportunities,” she says. “Whereas previous generations tended to be more risk averse, millennials enjoy taking risks and adopting new ideas – all of which are important traits for driving supply chain and manufacturing innovation.” Many manufacturers, even in successful, growing companies, clearly worry that millennials will not be attracted to manufacturing. Some 84% of executives agree that there is a talent shortage in U.S. manufacturing, according to a survey by the Manufacturing Institute and Deloitte. The skills gap facing manufacturing could mean as many as 2 million jobs go unfilled over the coming decade. In a research study on millennials, Manpower found that 79% wanted flexible working conditions. That is something that SUN is trying to offer through flexible start times and the ability to make up time in their work week. Aaron Scholthauer, 32, a mechanical engineer who graduated from Johns Hopkins University, has been at SUN Automation for 10 years and is now manager of development engineering. That job involves not only managing internal resources to ensure that products are developed that meet customers’ expectations but talking to customers throughout the product development process. Scholthauer has several millennials on his team. He says the “old management style” based on position and power doesn’t work with his generation. Instead, he believes managers need to develop relationships with their employees in order to have influence and earn
their respect. That emotional connection to people, he says, results in getting “the most productivity and the highest quality work.” It would be foolish to think that a group of more than 80 million is monolithic in their characteristics, but many experts say manufacturing can count on millennials to be open to innovation and lead the charge for change. “Millennial leaders will challenge the accepted practices and processes in manufacturing,” says Robin Schwartz, the managing partner for MFG Jobs, a job board for manufacturing positions. “As a generation known for asking questions and suggesting improvements, they will embrace an environment that is open to change.” “Millennials are really looking for organizations that value their feedback, value their opinions, value their process improvement recommendations,” she added Reflecting ongoing changes in the demographics of the United States, experts say millennials will embrace diversity and employ it as a strength in the workplace. Karls-Bilski says diversity is a driver in millennials’ job searches “whether in people, culture or community.” “The differences between employees at 3M is what drives our company forward; our successes are built off the power of different ideas and skills,” she adds. “Diversity also allows supply chains to stay relevant and better reflect their customers and markets – something 3M unquestionably believes in.” Asked who he is looking to hire, Greg Mark of Markforged says to envision a graph with a 45-degree line drawn on it. The Y axis is “horsepower” – his term for ability. The X axis is any form of “quirkiness.” If a candidate is above the line, says Mark, they are eligible to be hired. Corporate InvestmentsWill Determine Pace Of Long-Term Growth
Making Precision Machined Parts Since 1974
Strohwig Industries, a tool and die maker in Richfield, has had a good year, and the company is optimistic that 2018 will be even better. The lowering of the federal corporate tax rate to 21% from 35% means that its customers will have more money to buy its products and services.“That certainly is our hope and expectation,” said Michael Retzer, controller of Strohwig Industries, which employs about 175 people.
Howard Precision Machined Products Davenport and CNC Machines Prototype to Production Up to 3.00” Diameters
Whether that proves true will help determine the economic benefits of the new tax plan. When sales are strong for companies such as Strohwig Industries, it’s a sign that businesses are spending money on the equipment and technology that make the country more productive. That’s what really matters over the long-term. Economic growth ultimately stems from two things: population growth (specifically the number of workers) and increases in productivity.

There are stretches of strong or slow economic growth, as well as the occasional boom or bust, tied to interest rates, tax rates, greed, fear and a lengthy list of other factors. But ultimately, the economy won’t grow any faster than the population and increases in productivity. The productivity part is the more important of the two, and it hinges on investment and innovation. The tax cut that was part of the tax overhaul is expected to increase consumer spending and spur the economy to grow at a faster pace in the short-term, though economists disagree on how much.

“My guess is you will have a short-term spark,” said Niloy Bose, a professor of economics at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. It’s what economists liken to a sugar high. The tax cuts for individuals and families also end over time. The long-term gains will come from what businesses spend on equipment and technology, said Noah Williams, an economics professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.For that reason, Williams and most economists consider the lower corporate tax rate to be the most important part of the tax overhaul. The law also allows business to expense, or deduct from their profits, the cost of new equipment immediately instead of deducting it over many years. That change, which will be phased out after five years, provides an additional incentive for companies to spend more on investments that can increase productivity. None of this, however, is a given.“It’s all contingent on what companies do,” said Stephen Cole, an assistant professor of economics at Marquette University. Just because a company has more cash doesn’t mean that it has promising places to invest it.
That’s one of the reasons that companies in the S&P 500 spent more than $6 trillion from 2005 through 2014 buying back their own shares. Large U.S. corporations overall also haven’t lacked for cash or access to it. S&P Global Ratings estimates that the 500 largest industrial companies — a list that doesn’t include financial, transportation and real estate companies or utilities — have $1.6 trillion in available cash and cash equivalents. But Chandler said the lower corporate tax rate changes the projected return on future investments, though he expects this to come into play only on the margins. What is important is that companies could be more likely to build a new factory in the United States, he said, rather than in Netherlands or Ireland, because of the lower corporate tax rate. That, too, is one of the reasons that Mike Katz, president of Molded Dimensions in Port Washington, believes that lowering the corporate tax rate is good policy. The company, which makes custom rubber and cast polyurethane components, is fiscally conservative and pays for capital expenditures, such as new equipment, with cash, Katz said. But the lower tax rate could increase investment at some small companies.

Lower taxes also won’t make a bad investment attractive.Still, the prospect of companies’ remaining or expanding in the U.S. is one of the reasons for Strohwig Industries’ optimism about the tax overhaul.“If companies are less likely to go overseas, that helps us,” Retzer said.

A company could decide to spend When a customer moves a factory to China, Strohwig Industries can’t follow it, he said. And when they move $50,000 on a robot, for example, to Mexico, the company can sell to them but not provide the same services. because it would not need to borrow the money.“This could help them on The lower corporate tax rate and other changes will help keep companies in the U.S., Retzer said. “And that to me is reform,” Retzer said. margins,” Katz said. 2018 Predictions ForThe SkilledTrades Industry From Brandon Milligan, COO Of Stratatech Education Group StrataTech Education Group focuses on the education, growth and development of specialized career education schools, particularly skilled-trade programs designed to address the nation’s growing infrastructure needs. Improved focus on STEAM education:The educational landscape is progressively moving more towards a STEM or STEAM based curriculum – science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. Initially the benefits of these programs were overlooked, but in 2018 we will see this curriculum sweeping across all facets of education. These tracks will gain popularity as more students, parents and educators recognize the equitable and successful opportunities the skilled trades industry provides – both physically/mentally challenging and financially rewarding. Increased enrollment for skilled trades education: In 2018, there will be an uptick in enrollment for students entering the skilled trades industry. Because of the price increase of traditional colleges and universities, the return on investment for some students is becoming more limited and scarce. Additionally, Congress and other public officials are placing an emphasis on the skilled trades industry. With increased exposure into the opportunities that exist within skilled trades, we anticipate a corresponding increase in the number of students pursuing these careers through technical education.
Machinsts Inc. Goes Into Overtime For Alaska Project When Louis Dreyfus TravOcean needed some expertise to outfit their barge for the harsh conditions of northern Alaska, they knew where to turn, Machinists Inc.TravOcean was planning to lay 16 km of fiber optic network, the first part of their network around Alaska, the Quintillion Subsea Network. “We had been approached in April by representatives of TravOcean, checking out our capabilities. They dropped off some drawings and said they needed equipment made up for the barge, starting in May,” said Jeff Tomson of Machinists Inc. TravOcean was looking for a lot of brackets, bladder system, cable coil retention and several mounting blocks for the deck of the barge. Tomson said they put together a price associated with that. TravOcean representatives came back on May saying they needed it right away, by the end of the month. Machinists Inc. took on the challenge. “We put a team of 8-10 people on it, knocked out all of the components. In the meantime, they approached us with the opportunity to install all the components when it is on the barge,”Tomson said. “We delivered the components at the end
of May and started installing them at the beginning of June. We were done with the instillation by the middle of June.” Meeting the tight timeline was a great example of the flexibility offered at Machinists. They were able to put a team together and support that team. “We’re very responsive in our fabrication department and are able to take on quick jobs on a regular basis. This one was very unique in its requirements, but the requirements fit well within our capabilities,”Tomson said. “We worked overtime and weekends to support the delivery.” TravOcean took the barge in the summer of 2017 to the north slope of Alaska for the fiber optic instillation. When they came back, Machinists Inc. was commissioned to take everything off the barge. The barge had to be brought back to its original condition. The work was done close to Machinists Inc. facility on the Duwamish River at Sea Tac Marine. Machinists Inc. has done a lot of marine applications, but not the full rigging of barge systems. The rigging of the barge system was unique and new for Machinists, Tomson said. The biggest challenge was simply the schedule. “We had to coordinate with their team. We had to get the parts over there. We had to coordinate with SeaTac Marine for accessibility and power requirements on the project. We needed a lot of power to run the welders. There were many requirements around collaboration and coordination. The toughest was just to make sure everybody was on the same page,” Tomson said. As you might imagine, the conditions in Alaska are pretty extreme, so Machinists’ work had to withstand that environment. Tomson said they had to do a complete inspection of all the welds. MI used a mag-particle inspection to make sure there were no cracks or voids. Plus, they had to prove they met the welding standards that were set for them, the ABS standards. It’s nothing new for Machinists Inc.
“There are certainly other projects that met very similar criteria. We do a lot of work on the fishing fleet based out of Seattle. Most of the work is in shop, not on the boat. But every now and then, we do some boat instillation,” Tomson said. All the barge equipment had to be removed in five days, because “time is money.” The barge had to be stripped down to make it ready for another project. Tomson said they had to make sure all the different teams were not in each other’s way. Machinist Inc. put together a plan that everyone followed so they could be as efficient as possible to get the work done on time. “It was challenging, but the challenges were accomplished on schedule. The boat had to leave by a certain date to start laying cable by a certain time. We really had to meet the schedule challenge of the customer, which was paramount. We were able to build up the team with short notice that was very responsive and successful,” Tomson said. J.M. Grisley Time Line JM Grisley founded by James Marion (JM) Grisley Son Bob Grisley takes over the family business (2nd Generation) JM Grisley becomes the first US distributor of Doosan Machines JM’s Grandson Jim takes over the family business (3rd Generation) JM’s Great Grandson Lars runs the family business (4th Generation) J.M. Grisley is by all accounts an anomaly in family owned businesses. Research shows that approximately 30 percent of all family-owned businesses survive into the second generation and 12 percent will survive into the third generation. Surprisingly, only 3 percent of all family businesses operate at the fourth generation and beyond. Source: www.jsaadvising.com J.M. Grisley isn’t just surviving, it is thriving. Since 1927, the company, located in Salt Lake City, is a full service distributor of machine tools. They offer both multi-axis CNC and manual machine tools including machining centers, turning centers, boring mills, wire EDM, sinker EDM, and accessories for both production and prototype. They support a number of industries, including: Aerospace, Oil, Medical and Job Shops. Many customers will tell you that they evaluate machine reputation, features/functionality, and pricing when they make the decision to procure a new machine tool, but typically, there are many different machines that will check off all of their respective requirements. In the end, most machine shops make their final machine tool selection based upon the support they expect to receive from their machine tool dealer. J.M. Grisley wins the trust of their customers time and time again because of their full service department capabilities. Jim Grisley, 3rd generation owner says, “ Our capabilities include machine installations, factory warranty repair and out of warranty repair for all of our manufacturers. Our service technicians are factory certified to work on Doosan, Mitsubishi, FANUC, Southwestern Industries, Brother, and a range of other machines. We keep our technicians up to date with the latest technology by sending them to factory trainings.” The J.M. Grisley support model also includes application support and training. They can provide complete support for part programming, automation, part processing and operator training. Lars Grisley (4th generation) says that the company provides Preventative Maintenance (PM) training, as well as G-code, conversational programming and general machining training. While J.M. Grisley is the exclusive supplier of a number of precision machine tools, their Doosan line accounts for a large share of the company’s business. J.M. Grisley was awarded the Doosan line more than 3 decades ago, and they were honored to have been the first US dealer selected by Doosan in the United States. Lars says, “The Doosan SMX 3100S is really taking off with our customers; it is a very good machine with a reasonable price. We just had a high end aerospace shop purchase one.” The Doosan SMX3100S multi-task milling/turning centers are designed for heavy and interrupted cutting, longterm high accuracy and superior surface finishes. The high speed tool change with fast rapid traverse rates minimizes non-cutting time. The C-axis contouring, Y-axis off-center and B-axis any-angle milling/drilling allow for single set-up completion of highly complex work pieces. Multi-tasking capabilities increase productivity and provide for just-in-time production requirements by reducing lead time, changeover time, set-up time, and time between operations. Jim adds, “The Doosan Lynx 220LYSC is another popular machine for our customers; it affords huge capacity in a small footprint and still with a super competitive price.” The Doosan Lynx 220LSYA turning centers are designed for long-term high accuracy and A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

superior surface finishes. High speed turret indexing and ultra-fast rapid traverse rates minimize non-cutting time. Mill-drill capability and Y-axis with a full C-axis sub spindle greatly reduce the need for secondary operations, eliminating additional set-up and handling costs. Classic manufacturing methods and ultra-rigid construction are combined with advanced technological features to provide exceptional value. J.M. Grisley supported their customers in Utah, Idaho and Montana with Doosan machine tools for many years, often winning prestigious awards from Doosan, including ‘Outstanding Sales Performance’, ‘Outstanding Service Performance’, and even the coveted award, ‘Service Distributor of theYear’. It is no surprise that when Doosan made a decision to select a new dealer for Colorado and Wyoming, it was J.M. Grisley who they awarded the territory to. For nearly 2 years now, J.M. Grisley has increased their sales and support in the Intermountain West, encompassing Utah, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. For their efforts and results, they were named ‘Top Performer’ by Doosan for 2017. Lars has spent the past couple of years familiarizing his new customers in Colorado and Wyoming with J.M. Grisley, and he has carefully selected a superior sales and service team to support them. With such an ambitious growth strategy planned, Lars and his father Jim made the decision for Jim to step into a more active role in the dayto-day business. When your team is so productive and respected, word gets out and it didn’t take long for other machine tool builders to take note of J.M. Grisley’s geographic expansion success. Today, their exclusive line of new machine tools includes: Doosan, Brother, Hermle, Sodick, Mitsui Seiki, United Grinding and SNK.To learn more about J.M. J.M Grisley Adds Brother’s SPEEDIO Machine Tool To Its Portfolio It’s A ‘Wicked Fast’ ‘Super Compact’ Machine Chances are that you have used a Brother product in the past without knowing it. Brother International Corporation, the US subsidiary of Japan-based Brother Industries Ltd., was established in 1954.The company is a premier provider of home, home office, and business products, as well as industrial solutions that revolutionize the way we live and work. Headquartered in NJ, the company employs approximately 1,200 colleagues in the Americas. What you may not know is that Brother manufactures a superior, cost effective machine tool line, and J.M. Grisley was invited to carry the line exclusively just about 2 years ago. Here’s a little background. More than 30 years ago, in 1985, Brother released its first machine tool, the Tapping Center. For the next 3 decades, the Tapping Center series has contributed to the productivity of machining parts in a broad range of industries. Through collaboration with their customers about their requirements for productivity, the Brother machine tool team of designers continued to improve their Tapping Center while accumulating original high production technologies to increase machining speed by even 0.5 seconds and reduce machining time by even 1 second. With the theme of “perpetual pursuit of high productivity” and utilizing the technologies cultivated through the development of the Tapping Center series, Brother developed a machine for the next stage, and released it in 2013 with a new brand name,‘SPEEDIO.’ To sum it up, SPEEDIO is a compact machining center that achieves overwhelming high productivity based on Brother’s original technologies. Brother’s original servo technologies for #30 machines are fully utilized to achieve high speed, high acceleration and high response. Brother’s original NC unit drives machine performance to its peak to ensure optimal running, eliminating any wasted operation. A highly rigid structure has been achieved using analysis technology data accumulated during the design phase. A high output spindle motor is used, which demonstrates excellent machining capabilities from the low speed range to the medium- and high-speed range, enabling high-efficiency machining and heavy-duty machining. The machine also demonstrates high capabilities over a broad range of machining, including circular machining and high-speed three-dimensional machining, utilizing the smooth path offset function, look-ahead function etc. Brother’s original NC unit provides a variety of convenient functions, such as shortcut keys, menu programming, help messages, torque waveform display, etc. Maintenance is easy, and the machine flexibly responds to peripheral systems. Making full use of these original functions allows you to improve workability and operating rate. The machine uses a power regeneration system that effectively lowers power consump-
tion, high-efficiency spindle motor, energy saving pump, LED type work light, etc. The machine is also equipped with multiple energy saving NC functions such as automatic power off, demonstrating high environmental performance, in the top level among #30 machines. Chris Johnson supports many of J.M. Grisley’s customers in Utah as an Applications Engineer/Sales Engineer. One of Chris’s customers, a long time J.M. Grisley customer, recently purchased 2 Brother SPEEDIO S700X1 machine tools. Chris says, “This customer was machining a part on an entry level competitive machine, and it took them 26 minutes to machine each part. With the SPEEDIO, it now takes them 3 minutes per part!” Chris calls the SPEEDIO ‘wicked fast’, and said it was the ideal machine for his customer’s medium to low quantity, small parts. The customer is getting 3-5 extra part setups a day on their low quantity parts. One of CaryWinget’s customers recently bought a Brother SPEEDIO machine from J.M. Grisley. Prior to this purchase, the customer hadn’t purchased any machines from J.M. Grisley. Cary says, “The SPEEDIO was perfect for my customer’s requirements. He needed a machine that was ideal for high quantities (in the thousands), and small, high precision parts. Due to space constraints in his shop, a small footprint was also a key driver.” Cary’s customer made the decision to purchase the SPEEDIO because it met all of the requirements listed above. Cary adds, “The internal pallet changer was ideal for his production requirements, and he can fit 3 SPEEDIOs in the space typically required for 1 mill.” Since Cary’s customer was new to J.M. Grisley and needed assurance that he would see superior support after the sale, he contacted a number of Grisley’s customers to hear just how outstanding their service is. Colorado Uranium Companies AskTrump For Help Two Colorado uranium companies are jointly asking President Trump to help the U.S. uranium mining industry. In a joint letter yesterday to the U.S. Commerce Dept., Energy Fuels Inc. of Lakewood and Ur-Energy Inc. of Littleton said that they want protection from “imports of uranium products that threaten national security.” The companies said they’re worried that the U.S. currently gets 40 percent of its uranium from Russia, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan and only 5 percent from domestic production, with additional foreign imports from Russia and China expected in the future. “A healthy uranium mining industry is vital to U.S. national security, because it supplies fuel for nuclear power plants that are a key component of the nation’s critical energy infrastructure and essential defense needs,” the two companies wrote, adding that they supplied more than half of the U.S.’s 2017 domestic uranium production. The companies said they want a quota on uranium imports, and want at least 25 percent of the U.S. nuclear market reserved for U.S. uranium companies. A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Manufacturing in Growth andTransition In the decade since the beginning of the Great Recession industrial production (e.g. manufacturing, mining and electricity production) has been a political football of both the left and right. It’s time to stop playing that game, and a good way to start is to review some facts about these industries, which continue to provide a significant share of the Midwestern economy. We are, right now, at the peak of industrial production in the United States. By every measure of production, we are at record levels. The industrial production index peaked in December 2007, then dropped by roughly 15 percent by the summer of 2009. It took five years to recover to a second peak in 2015. As the world economy dipped in 2015 and 2016, so too did US industrial production. We are back at a record level of industrial output. It’s worth noting that total US industrial production is more than twice what it was back in 1979, when employment peaked. And yes, of course, that is adjusted for inflation.
Other measures tell the same story. Inflation-adjusted manufacturing GDP will peak in 4th Quarter 2017, both in dollar and quantity index measures. Importantly, new data on value-added of manufacturing offers an even more interesting insight into We pr i de ou rs e l ve s o n o ur se r v ice a n d q ua li t y p rod uc t s America’s manufacturing strength. Please RSVP to Maddie Dahl, NUNTMA Chapter Executive, Ph: 801.337.7097, Email: chapterexec@nuntma.org Geographically, there was very little relocation of manufacturing between rural and urban places since the start of the recession. But, the longer trend is far more disruptive, with nearly seven times the manufacturing GDP growth in urban American than rural America since 2000. That trend has returned since 2009, with the bulk of manufacturing GDP flowing to urban places. This is unsurprising, since that is where the new workers manufacturing firms need are located.
Northern Tooling & Machining (NTMA) Northern Utah Members Attend Coolant Panel Forum with Presenters from Blaser, Star Metal Fluids and Oemeta
Economists call this agglomeration, but it looks like urbanization to demographers. Since 2001, 60 percent of all manufacturing GDP growth has occurred in just 10 cities, the smallest of which is about 2.2 million people. More than one in four metropolitan areas actually lost manufacturing GDP during this period. The quite simple truth is that manufacturing in American is doing extremely well and is enjoying record levels of production. At the same time, the places factories are located and the people who work in these factories have gone through epic change. As economists have been saying for some time, the big winners in this transformation are college graduates with technical degrees located in large urban places. This trend will continue for the remainder of the 21st Century. Colorado Manufacturing Building Strength Today Innovating for Tomorrow
CNC Machining - CNC machining involves taking a solid block of material, usually plastic or metal, and cutting a part from it in a computer-controlled process. CNC machined parts have excellent strength and surface finish, and it’s also fast. It has drawbacks, though – there are geometric limitations, and it’s more expensive than 3D printing because programmers and machinists are needed to create CNC toolpaths and fixturing for the parts. Injection Molding - Rapid injection molding involves injecting thermoplastic resins into a mold. Like CNC machining, the process produces parts that are strong and have good surface finish. There are different types of injection molding, and the technology can be used to produce anywhere from 25 to over 10,000 components. It’s fast and there is very little finishing required. Drawbacks include tooling costs.

3D Printing or Another Process? How to Choose the Right Prototyping Technology | With so many different types of manufacturing methods available, it’s difficult sometimes to know how to choose the one that is best for your needs. Rapid prototyping offers numerous benefits, but there are a wide range of rapid prototyping methods to choose from, each offering something a little different, and it can be overwhelming trying to sort through the different types. First, it’s important to ask yourself the right questions so you know what to look for. In a recent webinar,Tony Holtz of Proto Labs outlined several of the questions you should be asking when deciding on a rapid prototyping method. They include: How many parts do you need? What types of material characteristics do you need for the prototype and ultimately the product? What is your budget? How soon do you need the parts? In what stage of product development are you? Will you need to make modifications? What is the life expectancy of the product? Are you familiar with your options?
3D Printing - 3D printing includes several different types of processes with their own advantages and disadvantages, but all of those processes share certain benefits – they can produce parts with complex geometries, they don’t require additional tooling, and although the equipment can be expensive, it’s much cheaper to produce multiple prototypes of an object than it is using other methods, meaning that a company can go back and create as many iterations as necessary to perfect the object. Disadvantages include part strength, which historically limited the technology to prototyping, but newer methods of 3D printing are delivering parts strong enough for end use. Common types of 3D printing include: • Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) • Stereolithography (SLA) • Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) • Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DLMS) • Polyjet
While there are plenty of service providers that focus only on one type of rapid prototyping technology, there are also many others that offer a multitude of options – and can help you That last question is an important one – you can’t make an informed decision until you’re aware of what decide which one is best for you. by different kinds of rapid prototyping methods are out there. Here is a look at a few of them. Clare Scott, 3D Printing
