Editors Corner “A good company delivers excellent products and services, and a great company does all that and strives to make the world a better place.” — Bill Ford It’s not just a new year, 2020 is the beginning of a new decade. What will the 20s hold for us? And is it only as we leave it behind that we will be able to see this new decade for what it truly represents? Often, decades come to be known by a single title, like the ‘Swinging Sixties’ or the ‘Warring Forties’. A hundred years ago, it was the ‘Roaring Twenties’ that were about to begin. What name will the 20s be described as? For me, 2020 means that I just passed the 15 year mark as a small business owner, having purchased the Arizona Metalworker in 2005. In these past 15 amazingly rewarding years, I have interviewed hundreds of companies, nearly exclusively all precision machine shops. My business interviews are always inspiring and rewarding. These are companies that are successful; after all, our articles are invariably based upon some new milestone in their business, whether it is celebrating X number of years, having achieved a certification, or having made some major capital acquisitions.

A2Z Manufacturing PUBLISHER/EDITOR Linda Daly linda@a2zmfg.com
In this issue, we showcase 3 companies across 3 states. They are all successful, and there are many attributes they share. One is now global, with hundreds of employees throughout the world, one is just a few years old, and the inventor of new products, and the 3rd is a machine shop, acquired in the last few years by a savvy business person and excellent business leader.
Mail Address: 1538 E La Vieve Lane Tempe, AZ 85284
What makes these companies successful? Clearly, quality products, timely deliveries, and excellent customer service are all necessary factors. But what else makes these and other companies that continue to thrive, successful? 3 attributes or business philosophies stand out.
Website: www.a2zMfg.com E-mail: Linda@A2zMfg.com
Retention is a key factor, not just customer retention, but also employee retention. Most of the successful companies I interview talk about their employees as essential to their success. And these companies generally have longevity with a large percentage of their employees.Their good employees just stay. The second thing I hear that stands out with the successful companies I meet is that they have a strong focus on helping others,on charitable activities. Whether it is the plaques proudly displayed of contributions to a Little League Baseball teams, or dental products donated to help people to receive badly needed dental care they can’t afford, or participation in associations that help underemployed to find meaningful careers, ‘Giving Back’ seems to be a consistent theme in the successful small manufacturing entities I have the pleasure to interview. The 3rd key element I see is the investment in new and innovative technologies. We certainly live in uncertain political times and this is warrants concern for where the economy is going. But if you are a business owner and you are holding off on making needed capital investments to improve your operation, know that you are putting yourself at a competitive disadvantage to those of your peers who are moving forward boldly. I hope this next decade offers our industry a number of very strong years; I hope that upcoming generations recognize that trades in manufacturing can be a rewarding, well paying career choices. I hope that the A2Z Manufacturing magazines, with your help, remain a relevant set of trade journals for our industry. Until next issue, I wish you all a very good 2020 and God Bless OurTroops!

hundreds of manufacturers and companies from diverse industries and backgrounds with categories ranging from aerospace and automobiles to apparel and textiles. Approximately 50 percent of exhibitors were either woman- or veteran-owned. Highlights included presentations and forums led by industry leaders and peer-to-peer networking with the Made in the USA community. Organizers behind MADE IN AMERICA 2019 say this is “only the beginning of the nationwide movement.” Moser’s reshoring efforts have been widely recognized. In 2010, he was inducted into the Industry Week Manufacturing Hall of Fame. Moser actively participated in President Obama’s Insourcing Forum at the White House in January 2012. He also won The Economist debate in January 2013 on outsourcing and offshoring, and received the Manufacturing Leadership Council’s Industry Advocacy Award in 2014. In 2019, the U.S. Department of Commerce named Moser as a member of its new Investment Advisory Council. The Council advises the Secretary of Commerce on how government policies and programs affect the United States’ ability to attract and facilitate business investment, including reshoring.
Sincerely, Lucas
The Reshoring Initiative tracks and drives the reshoring and FDI (foreign direct investment) trends, which together brought 145,000 manufacturing jobs to the U.S. in 2018 and 757,000 since 2010. Consistent use of the Reshoring Initiative’s Total Cost of Ownership Estimator® and Import Substitution Program by companies, and the Competitiveness Toolkit by the government would double or triple the size of the trends. The TCO Estimator helps companies recognize the benefit of producing in the U.S. for the U.S. market.

into our industry, and a true generosity of spirit demonstrated through his commitment to serving the companies that make our association and the entire manufacturing community great. We are excited to have Roger take the NTMA helm and lead our organization into the future.”
Atkins began his career at his family’s contract manufacturing business, immediately after graduating from Texas A&M University. Over the years, he spear-headed significant growth in multiple contract manufacturing companies, all of which also belonged to NTMA. His greatest success was growing a Texas-based contract manufacturing company from $22M to $156M which included acquisitions and international greenfield startups. For the past several years, Roger has operated RJ3 Enterprise, LLC, an executive advisory company, guiding small- to medium-sized contract manufacturing companies through growth and change and into success. “As we welcome Roger, we also express our gratitude to Doug DeRose who has served tirelessly as NTMA’s Interim President,” Lashinske added. “Doug’s energy and dedication helped maintain our association’s high level of programming and member services during this time of transition and growth.”

effect, manufacturers of metal goods, particularly those that supply parts to the automotive industry, will see some major changes from the previous North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which first went into effect Jan. 1, 1994. The biggest change is a 70% “regional value content” (RVC) for steel and aluminum in autos and a separate list of other products. There was no such requirement in NAFTA. Some metal product categories, such as chains and wire, were included in NAFTA and subjected to some rules, although not the steel/aluminum RVC rules. Other product categories were not touched by NAFTA but have been brought into the USMCA: Nails, tacks, drawing pins, corrugated nails, staples, and similar articles of iron or steel Certain welded tubes and pipes, fittings, and tool joints The National Association of Manufacturers and the Precision Metalforming Association, among many others, support the USMCA. Various metal fabrication sectors are concerned about the Environmental Protection Agency’s proposed changes to air emission requirements governing hazardous air pollutants for companies doing surface coating of metal parts. We previously noted that an EPA-proposed rule from last fall made no significant changes in emission limits for metal parts manufacturers, nor for automobile and metal furniture manufacturers, either. That was the good news. All those sectors were rolled into one large rulemaking. However, complaints have emerged from other sectors of the metal manufacturing community about some of the new requirements that are proposed.
with regard to how the SSM provisions affect magnet wire facilities. As is often the case with the EPA, it has taken its time implementing a court decision, in this case one from 2008 in Sierra Club vs. EPA, that requires some changes in the SSM provisions. But what the EPA is proposing will make it “challenging to find a methodology for emission calculations during SSM periods,” according to Squair. That could be true too for other fabrication sectors.
The slightly significant changes the EPA is proposing include amending provisions that address emissions during periods of startup, shutdown, and malfunction (SSM); that cover electronic reporting of performance test results; and that cover monitoring requirements. Some of these changes could be problematic, according to public comments submitted in the aftermath of the proposed rule. For example, Mike Cassidy, manager, EHS technical resources, Kohler Co., cited one new requirement that initial notifications, performance test results, performance evaluation reports, and semiannual reports using the new template should be submitted electronically through an electronic reporting tool called Compliance and Emissions Data Reporting Interface (CEDRI).
David Darling, vice president, health, safety, and environmental affairs, the American Coatings Association, suggested that the EPA clarify that the proposed requirement to conduct performance tests every five years so that it applies only to control devices and that the timing of the tests should be aligned with Title V operating permit requirements. In addition, EPA should also allow for testing extensions for facilities that need additional time to obtain representative conditions. Source: The Fabricator
“Reporting through CEDRI should not be required for sources in states delegated to administer/enforce the NESHAP, unless required by that specific state,” he told the agency. NESHAP stands for National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants. Registered apprenticeships also saw an increase in funding of $15 million when compared to last year, totaling $175 million, while also raising the maximum Pell Grant award to $6,345. Lawmakers also provided more resources for Manufacturing Extension Partnership Programs (MEPs) by adding $16 million to last year’s total. These all marked significant victories for the OneVoice lobbying program in 2019 and the NTMA and PMA thank their members who supported these efforts by sending letters to their Senators and Representatives calling on them to increase resources for training programs and raise awareness of manufacturing careers available.
ASTM International Announces Additive Manufacturing Training Course ASTM International’s Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (CoE) has announced a three-day training course that will focus on the basic concepts of the additive process chain.
The course will be held between March 10-12 at Auburn University in Alabama and give participants the opportunity to pick up ASTM’s ‘Basic AM Certificate’. Sessions will be led by experts from industry, regulatory agencies and academia and relate theory to real-world scenarios as experienced by industrial users of 3D printing technology. The course is available to those in government, industry and academia with an interest in 3D printing. and development to advance standards and facilitate an increased adoption of 3D printing technologies. To supplement that ambition, Dr Mohsen Seifi, ASTM International’s Director of Global Additive Manufacturing Programmes, says the CoE has, “made education and workforce development a major priority for creating a culture that accelerates AM adoption.”
The training course aims to equip participants with core technical knowledge and consists of more than half a dozen modules. Attendees will get to grips with the different additive manufacturing processes, design and simulation, post-processing, mechanical testing, safety issues, qualification and certification, and more.
Participants in the course will have to pass an exam to earn the Basic AM Certificate which serves as a foundation and prerequisite to attend future courses and pick up other specialised, role-based certificates through the AM CoE.This certificate programme has been developed in compliance with the ASTM International standard practice (E2659) and adopted by ANSI in the Certificate Accreditation Program (ANSI-CAP).

Announcements Continued question in “Rich States, Poor States,” an index of economic competitiveness published by the American Legislative Exchange Council. Every year the top performer has been Utah. In our 2019 report, Idaho, Arizona and Florida nearly took the top spot, but fell short again. For the other 49 states, outcompeting Utah is starting to look about as futile as beating Rafael Nadal on the red clay at the French Open. How does Utah manage to remain so economically competitive? As a destination spot, the Beehive State has natural advantages, including gorgeous red mountains and national parks that make it a scenic and recreational wonderland. But the real secret to Utah’s success is disarmingly simple:The state’s politicians tend to do everything right to encourage business development and job creation. Utah has a low, flat-rate income and corporate tax of below 5%.There’s no death tax, so wealthy people don’t have to flee to Florida after they retire. It’s is a right-to-work state, meaning workers can’t be compelled to join unions. Even though the regulatory touch is light, Utah has some of the best health outcomes in the nation. The minimum wage in Salt Lake City and Provo is $7.25 an hour, not the $10 to $15 mandated in many blue states and cities. This has allowed employers to respond to labor-market forces. Because jobs are so plentiful, wages are rising briskly. Job growth has ranked second in the nation for the past decade, and the state’s population growth ranks in the top three. The Salt Lake metro area has become one of America’s fastest-growing tech sectors and is now nicknamed the Silicon Slopes. Utah’s K-12 schools serve families well despite per pupil state spending that is the lowest in the nation and $4,000 below the national average. Fourth-graders in the state ranked in the top 10 in both math and reading on the 2019 National Assessment of Educational Progress. So much for money buying better school results. The state government in Salt Lake also has Utah’s fiscal house in order. Utah was among the first states in the nation to start erasing public pension liabilities by gradually shifting to a defined-contribution pension system for government workers. Property taxes fund actual municipal services—schools, police protection, hospitals and roads. In other states—most notably, California, Illinois andWestVirginia—hundreds of billions of dollars in pension liabilities are draining tax revenues. “We are unapologetically pro-business and pro-jobs in Utah,” Gov. Gary Herbert told me. “And we have a long tradition of being frugal on how we spend tax dollars.” Utah spends a third less per capita on state and local government services like housing and education than do New York, Connecticut and Rhode Island. But while their elected representatives are frugal, Utah residents don’t feel deprived. According to WalletHub. com Utah is the second-happiest state in the country. Only Hawaiians are happier. Part of the reason for Utah’s consistently strong economic growth is a still-predominant Mormon culture that encourages out-of-fashion virtues such as thrift, delayed gratification and stable
families. The state has the nation’s lowest median age. There is no dreary Malthusian concern about “overpopulation” in young and vital Utah. Stand outside a church on a Sunday morning, as I did recently, and you will see families with large numbers of kids spilling out of minivans. In the graying Northeast, that’s a rare sight. Many analysts have attributed Utah’s prosperity to favorable demographics. But good economic policy leads to favorable demographics. Roughly half of Utah’s population explosion has been due to net migration of almost 80,000 newcomers (mostly young) over the past decade from other states. If Utah had New York’s or California’s tax rates and antibusiness attitudes, the flow of people would likely run the other way. Progressives dismiss red states like Utah as places that reward the superrich with low taxes at the expense of everyone else. But perhaps the most confounding thing about Utah is that despite (or because of) its antiprogressive policies, it has the least income inequality in the nation, according to the latest U.S. Census Bureau data.By Stephen Moore

Five EmergingTrends As Millennials Run Manufacturing’s Next Act Millennials are projected to overtake baby boomers as America’s largest generation after they became the largest generation in the U.S. workforce in 2016. At a time when a significant percentage of the industrial world’s current workforce is at or nearing retirement, millennials — the oldest of which will turn 38 this year — are starting to transition at a rapid rate into management positions. What should the industrial market in general, and specifically the manufacturing industry, anticipate as millennials take charge?
1. Ubiquitous, instant connectivity and real-time collaboration We are all very aware that millennials’ use of technology clearly sets them apart from previous generations. According to the Pew Research Center, more than 9 in 10 own a mobile device. Nearly 100% say A Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain • 2

they use the internet, and 19% of them are smartphone-only internet users, meaning they own a smartphone but don’t have broadband internet service at home.As the first generation to have truly grown up with apps, social media and immediate access to any and all information at their fingertips, they value and expect the type of connectivity that only modern digital tools can provide. This is also the first generation to enter the workplace with a better understanding of new technology as business tools than older, more senior employees. They will want the same connected experience they have in their personal lives in the workplace and will expect the ability to be digitally connected with their teams quickly. In simple terms, the six-inch binder, walkie talkies and clunky legacy enterprise software assets won’t do the job as the industrial market’s execution suite of tools.
2. Enhanced productivity and efficiency without compromising safety or quality As they move into managerial positions, millennials will learn the nature of shift work, where employees, for the most part, don’t take work home with them, and an efficient handoff from one shift to the next is critical. Since most front-line workers aren’t typically connected to their jobs unless they are on-site, millennial managers will want to leverage technology that ensures their teams are working as efficiently as possible while clocked in. As advancements in automation and artificial intelligence reimagine the role of industrial work and upskilling/ reskilling efforts become mainstream, semi-skilled workers will become knowledge workers and less physically tied to the factory floor. Instead, they’ll be able to oversee and manage digitally connected machines and equipment from a distance, enabling more flexible, less time-bound work.
3. Mobile devices everywhere on the front lines With the costs for smartphones, tablets

and other similar mobile devices for the enterprise continuing to decrease, access for deskless workers will become more affordable — which, in turn, will lead to an increasing need for mobile-based worker apps. With millennials starting to increasingly run the show, mobile-first technologies will be championed at an accelerated rate that will become more of the norm over the next decade, replacing legacy console-based systems. Mobile devices on the factory floor not only make it easier to collaborate, but they can also improve worker and customer safety. This is especially important for remote or distributed workers who may not have easy, timely access to assistance or expertise nearby. For example, a worker who logs an equipment reading that indicates a dangerous situation can quickly initiate an instant video conference call with team members or off-site experts, provide visual context for the situation and receive immediate guidance. Bottom line: There are no more excuses since these mobile devices are robust, cost-effective and secure.
4. Sustainability and purpose as work motivation According to a survey from clean energy platform Swytch, 70% of millennials said a company’s sustainability record would impact their decision to stay with a company for the long haul. Many millennials want to work for an organization with a mission and purpose they believe in, and they likely prefer to work at a company that is transparent about its ecological impact. As millennials gain ground in manufacturing management positions, the production efficiencies enabled through technology — and its ability to document gains made or waste averted — will be key to that transparency, as well as a reason for them to stay loyal to a company and a motivating factor
for the Gen Z employees they’ll need to recruit to join their ranks.
5. Consumer choice explodes for products and for careers In addition to the obvious demographic/age transformation going on in the industrial workforce, another powerful market force is occurring: Mass-market products are no longer what consumers want. They want highly personalized products with features that rapidly change in terms of styles, colors, sizes and flavors. This is being driven by millennials and will accelerate with Gen Z. Think about how quickly fashion trends come and go, the exploding number of craft beers in the market and all the features you can have on a new car. Choice is the new norm, and manufacturers must have far greater agility in terms of the ability to change when, where and how long they manufacture a product. Referred to as the “batch size of one” in the industry, it is a reality and a soon-to-be norm. The same applies to career choices. No longer will employees stay at a company for 10 or 20 (let alone 30) years. According to a 2019 Deloitte study, 49% of millennials would, if they had a choice, quit their current jobs in the next two years, up from 38% in 2017. Industrial companies need to rethink how they hire, retain and train both junior and midlevel millennials at a far greater velocity than ever before. Modern digital tools will be a recruiting competitive weapon in the near term and a “must have” in the medium term.Source: Lawrence Whittle Forbes Councils Member A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Recycling Metals, Conserving Resources, Since 1961 Is Your Accounting Department Driving Profitability? Imagine two companies in the same industry, serving the same markets while offering virtually the same products and services. One company is growing, while the other is struggling. Why? There are many reasons for success and failure, but in my 23+ year career, I have seen successful companies distinguish themselves through their people, processes, and use of technology. Accounting departments are no different! Driving profitability and cash flow with your accounting function, starts by analyzing accounting team skillsets; key accounting processes; and the use of technology. Accounting Team Skillsets As businesses grow and become more complex, accounting departments must evolve also. Generally, there are three levels of accounting skillsets to consider: 1) bookkeeping and accounting staff, 2) controller, and 3) Chief Financial Officer (CFO). The role and skillset of each must be understood to maximize profit and cash flow. Bookkeeping and accounting staff enter transactions, maintain the books, and produce a basic balance sheet and profit and loss statement. Controllers supervise bookkeeping and accounting staff while maintaining a properly functioning accounting department. A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Controllers are responsible for producing monthly financial reporting packages which include financial statements and basic analysis. CFOs utilize the monthly financial reporting package along with other financial and operational data to provide advanced financial analyses, cost-saving strategies, and other forward-thinking insight. The right mix of skillsets on a full-time or fractional basis within your accounting team is essential for maximizing profit and cash flow. Key Accounting Processes Maximizing profit and cash flow is also a result of focusing on key accounting processes, such as cash receipts, disbursements, purchasing, and financial reporting. Properly designed processes provide consistency, predictability, accuracy, efficiency, accountability and timeliness while also preventing fraud. The accounting department should continually evaluate and improve its processes to help drive profitability and cash flow. Use of Technology Lastly, the use of technology in accounting is important for maximizing profit and cash flow.Technology should be evaluated in terms of its need, use, and potential benefit. The proper use of technology should: • Save time and money • Increase efficiency • Provide accountability
• Allow you to focus on your core functions Conclusion Analyzing accounting department skillsets, processes, and use of technology will help you in maximizing profit and cash flow.Today’s accounting department must actively seek ways to improve the bottom line!

GreenBroz Builds the Best Harvesting Machines For Their Clients With The Help Of SafanDarley Press Brakes When you are designing and manufacturing some of the best harvesting machines in the world, the machines you use to make all the components required for the machines must be best in class. And so is the case at Green Broz, where they have invested in 2 SafanDarley press brakes to make parts for their automated harvesting machines. Cullen Raichart founded GreenBroz in 2012. Cullen says, “I feel strongly that when a business invests in equipment, they should get high quality, thoroughly tested, top of the line machinery. First and foremost, the machine needs to work perfectly, and secondly, equipment costs should not jeopardize a company’s success.” Cullen speaks these words because his parents learned a very difficult lesson. When Cullen was younger, his parents owned a print shop, and to grow the business and remain competitive, they purchased a very expensive new piece of equipment. Unfortunately, the machine never worked properly, and this led to the demise of their business. Cullen would learn an important lesson that he carried forward into his new business.
History of GreenBroz Cullen calls himself very fortunate. AVeteran who served in the United States Navy and then spent years with Fortune 500 Military and Communications corporations, Cullen made the decision to launch his own business. He had learned over the years that he had a passion for creating innovative products, and with his military background, he sought to launch a company that would proudly manufacture products in the USA, and would make an effort to hire Veterans. Prior to opening GreenBroz, Cullen did some extensive analysis of various industries, seeking out one that had tremendous growth potential. “I looked at the evolving cannabis industry and saw that there were bottlenecks. After visiting a number of cultivation facilities, I recognized that the equipment wasn’t the most technologically advanced. I knew I could improve the harvesting machines.” GreenBroz was officially formed in 2012, and from its inception, the GreenBroz strategy was to design and manufacture machines that would enable their clients to process their harvest more efficiently and consistently while saving them time, money and labor costs. As start-ups often do, Cullen‘s first ‘corporate headquarters’ was his garage. He calls himself fortunate because, very early in the company’s existence, and with just the 2nd piece of equipment he invented, a dry trimmer, the company was an overnight success. So much so that today Green Broz isn’t operating out of Cullen’s garage, rather is occupies a 50,000 square foot building in Las Vegas, Nevada. GreenBroz manufactures a number of products, many which have patents or are patent pending, including sorters, trimmers, extractors, batchers, destemmers, rosin presses, and fan slides. They even have a line of GreenBroz apparel. “Our machines are designed for harvesting and work very well for harvesting cannabis”, Cullen says. He A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

continues, “Our trimmer machines are our flagship product. GreenBroz’ latest trimmer, introduced months ago, the GreenBroz Model M Dry Trimmer, is designed to closely mimic the act of hand trimming your harvest while at the same time increasing the consistency and efficiency of your harvest process. It is GreenBroz, Inc.’s largest and most high-efficiency automated harvesting machine to date, with 8-12 pounds per hour. The lesson Cullen learned from his parents’ purchase of a machine that didn’t work properly drives GreenBroz’ business model. GreenBroz must make machines that work well and help their customers to increase profitability. “The machines we purchase to make our machines too had to be reliable and so technologically advanced that we would be able to manufacture best in class harvesting machines on time and at the right price.” In addition to being an entrepreneur, Cullen is a manufacturing engineer with a very high comfort level, even a passion, for new technology. Cullen evaluated different press brakes while attending Fabtech in LasVegas a few years ago, and in the end, decided on builder SafanDarley. SafanDarley is the leading global specialist in developing and constructing press brakes and shears for both thin and
thick sheet metal. GreenBroz’ first SafanDarley was the E-Brake 110T. The O-Frame construction, paired with the servo driven belt and pulley system, means incredibly accurate bends across the full length bed of the machine. It offers so many features vies-a-vies competitive machines, including; a full electric drive, more than 30% higher productivity, up to 50% energy saving, low CO2 emissions, noiseless operation, a full working length back gauge, a user friendly touch screen control, and most importantly a fully integrated safety system designed seamlessly into the machine operation. Cullen and the GreenBroz team were so pleased with their first SafanDarley purchase that when it was time to add another press brake, they again looked at SafanDarley for a solution. Their second machine was the SafanDarley H-Brake Hybrid 190T, which is a hydraulic press brake with innovative hybrid control. SafanDarley reports that GreenBroz purchased the first of this machine in the United States. E Brake Principle Cullen says the H-Brake Hybrid offers an open frame construction, which works well when you are bending off the machine. He says it is similar to their electric press brake with ‘On Demand’ hydraulics. Safety is a key element to all SafanDarley products. SafranDarley machines have a safety system built into the controls, and it works with a safety light screen that is automatically directed from the SafanDarley E-Controls. Cullen says, “We love the safety controls — it provides an opportunity not to get yourself into trouble, and we can even bend parts without ever touching the foot pedal.” The SafanDarley E-Control is fully touch screen, whereby the only buttons visible on the 21” screen are those that are needed during operation. The controls simply run on a PC under Microsoft Windows®; the software was developed based on Microsoft. net Framework. Cullen says the consistency across the SafanDarley product line is a key advantage to their products. “All their machines use the same safety, the same control and the same software, so there was almost no learning curve when we added our H-Brake Hybrid 190T”, he elaborated. “SafanDarley makes some of the most intuitive, easy to run press brakes out there. We brought in a new employee who had no press brake experience, and he was able to begin running the machines very quickly”, Cullen says, “And 8 months later he is phenomenal on the machines.” He added, “Another thing about the SafanDarley machines that we like is that there is almost 0 maintenance required.
“We bring customers to our facility, and we have other shops who are looking at SafanDarley press brakes come to see a demo. Nobody can believe the kinds of bends and the quality of the products we can make”, Cullen said. “Another outstanding feature you can get from SafanDarley (as an option) is their AutoPOL sheet metal software. It is a modern 3D system for offline press brake programming and unfolding of 3D CAD models. Your ability to use simulation off-line will save valuable production time, minimize part scrap and validate the process before you have even started the machine. Cullen says, “We waited 2 years to purchase the AutoPOL, it was a long 2 years, and we should have ordered it sooner.” The dealer for SafanDarley in Colorado and Utah is Action Machinery with offices in Englewood, CO and Salt Lake City, UT. With Randy Breitenbach leading the team in Colorado and Tom Weaver in Utah, Action Machinery has positioned itself as one of the leading suppliers of MachineTools in the Rocky Mountain Region. Action Machinery offers a full line of metal fabrication machinery in both areas as well as being the Mazak dealer for CNC Machining equipment in Colorado. 2020, but there’s a question whether or not a Colorado rocket will be among those to launch them. Centennial-based United Launch Alliance’s Atlas V rocket was expected to blast off as soon as summer from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, carrying astronauts aboard Boeing Co.’s CST-100 Starliner capsule. A hiccup in the Starliner’s test flight on Dec. 20 without crew aboard raises questions about when that crewed launch will happen. After the Boeing Starliner’s automated systems misfired its thrusters and failed to rendezvous with the International Space Station last month, reporters questioned whether the first flight with astronauts for both the Starliner and ULA’s Atlas V rocket would still happen in 2020. NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine suggested he’d be comfortable having astronauts fly on Starliner’s next flight, assuming its investigation turned up and resolved a clear cause of the December mistake. ULA, a joint venture of Boeing and Lockheed Martin Corp., has been the premier space launch provider to NASA and other federal agencies since its founding in 2006, notching an unrivaled 136 consecutive successful launch missions.

Stanage will become the CEO of the post-merger company.Tom Gendron, CEO, president and chairman of Woodward, has been its top executive since 2005. He will become chairman of the board of the post-merger company and then plans to retire in 2021, he said. Woodward makes fluid-, motion- and combustion-control systems for airplanes and industrial uses, with major civilian and military aircraft makers as its main customers. Some of Its systems are used to control wing flaps on airplanes.

Chicago-based aircraft manufacturing giant Boeing is Woodward’s biggest customer, accounting for 15% of Woodward’s annual revenue. General Electric, the industrial conglomerate that makes aircraft engines, is roughly a similarly sized Woodward customer. The deal comes as Boeing has paused production of its best-selling plane, the 737 MAX, after a pair of fatal crashes that killed 346 people.

Hexcel manufactures advanced composite materials and composite parts used in aviation, space and industrial items. Its composites are used in the blades of many airliner engines. Woodward employs about 9,000 people, about 3,000 of whom are outside the United States. Hexcel employs nearly 6,300 people worldwide. Executives from the companies have traveled and worked together closely, watching the aviation industry increasingly stress making planes lighter, more fuel efficient and integrating sensors into control systems. “We’ve been pursuing many of the same initiatives with the same

The combined business will be at forefront of improving aerodynamics, emissions, fuel consumption and safety, the executives said. “Our greater scale will help us accelerate innovation in aerodynamics and energy efficiency,” Gendron said. By Greg Avery – Reporter, Denver Business Journal
Colorado Just Implemented A New Overtime Rule. Here’s When It Hits And What To Know A new Colorado Department of Labor and Employment order requiring overtime pay for more workers across Colorado will ramp up more slowly than originally proposed but still will take effect fully by July 1, according to rules adopted by the agency. Beginning then, employers must pay hourly overtime at a rate of time-and-a-half to any worker exceeding 40 hours per week who makes less than $35,568 per year — a change in state rules that synchronizes up with a federal order requiring the same things as of Jan. 1 of this year. That minimum-salary threshold for overtime pay then will rise to $40,500 at the start of 2021, $45,000 to begin 2022, $50,000 to start 2023 and $55,000 at the beginning of 2024, after which the threshold will be indexed to inflation.

Texas-Colorado Effort Aims To Break U.s. Dependence On China For Key Rare-Earth Minerals
TVT DIE CASTING
A Wheat Ridge plant next month will start refining the first heavy rare-earth minerals mined and processed in the U.S., helping break dependence on China for materials used in key modern military weapons and consumer technologies.

Mined material from Round Top will be separated into rare-earth elements and purified in the Wheat Ridge pilot facility. The companies plan to optimize a new type of refinement process there and make it ready to be done on a larger scale at the Texas mine. Wheat Ridge made sense as the location of the ion-exchange processing pilot plant, said Pini Althaus, CEO of USA Rare Earth. It’s estimated to cost between $10 million and $12 million to establish because of the involvement of rare-earth materials and mining expert Deepak Malhotra, and research connected to the Colorado School of Mines. “It’s a very good place to tap into the unique set of expertise that is required for the processing of rare earths,” he said. “It is the place that makes the most sense.” By mid-February, the joint venture expects to have teams from two partner companies, Inventure Renewables and Fenix NZ, in Wheat Ridge optimizing the processing of rare earths, such as dysprosium, and refinement of other non-rare earth materials with commercial value, such as lithium.

USA Rare Earth, a privately held company based in NewYork City, and Texas Mineral Resources Corp., a public company based in Tyler, Texas, have formed a joint venture to develop the rare-earths mine and processing facility, known as Round Top, on 950 acres near the U.S-Mexico border southeast of El Paso, Texas.

Two companies developing a rare-earths mine in southwest Texas are opening a pilot plant locally by mid-February to process and purify rare earths here in Colorado. The effort is part of a broader push by industry and the Pentagon to break U.S. reliance on importing from China the minerals that are key ingredients for specialized magnets used in weapons guidance systems, or that help make electronics displays, solar- and wind-power systems, smart phones, laptop computers and other consumer electronics.

The Superpowers Of Super-Thin Materials In recent years, internet-connected devices have colonized a range of new frontiers — wrists, refrigerators, doorbells, cars. But to some researchers, the spread of the “internet of things” has not gone nearly far enough. “What if we were able to embed electronics in absolutely everything?” Tomás Palacios, an electrical engineer at the Massachusetts Institute ofTechnology, said recently. “What if we did energy harvesting from solar cells inside highways, and had strain sensors embedded in tunnels and bridges to monitor the concrete? What if we could look outside and get the weather forecast in the window? Or bring electronics to my jacket to monitor my health?” In January 2019, Palacios and his colleagues published a paper in Nature describing an invention that would bring that future a little closer: an antenna that can absorb the ever-thickening ambient soup of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and cellular signals and efficiently turn it into usable electrical energy. The key to the technology is a promising new material called molybdenum disulfide, or MoS2, that can be deposited in a layer just 3 atoms thick. In the world of engineering, things can’t get much thinner. And thin is useful. For instance, a layer of MoS2 could wrap around a desk and turn it into a laptop charger, without any power cords. As researchers like Palacios see it, two-dimensional materials will be the linchpin of the internet of everything. They will be “painted” on bridges and form the sensors to watch for strain and cracks. They will cover windows with transparent layers that become visible only when information is displayed. And if his team’s radio wave-absorber succeeds, it will power those ever-present electronics. Increasingly, the future looks flat. “There’s been absolutely explosive interest,” said Jeff Urban, a 2D materials A Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain • 2

researcher at the Molecular Foundry at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, in California. “There’s no other way to characterize it.” The craze for 2D chemistry began in 2004, when two researchers at the University of Liverpool used cellophane tape to peel 1-atom-thick layers of carbon from chunks of graphite, forming graphene. Graphene is identical to graphite and diamond in composition, but the thinness gives it very different properties: It is flexible, transparent, extremely strong, and an exceptional electrical and thermal conductor. Researchers quickly set out to make all kinds of new and improved gadgets from it. Recently several companies released headphones with diaphragms — the vibrating membranes that produce sound in audio devices — made of graphene. Some paint manufacturers are adding graphene to their formulas to make longer-lasting coatings. Last October Huawei introduced the Mate 20 X, a large, powerful cellphone that uses graphene to help cool the processor. Samsung used graphene to develop a faster-charging battery, which may appear in phones in the near future. Urban is working with 2D materials to improve fuel cells, which have drawn interest as a clean propulsion system for green vehicles. Most fuel cells generate electricity from hydrogen, but even under high pressure hydrogen gas takes up several times more space than a comparable amount of gasoline, making it impractical to use in automobiles. Instead, Urban is embedding hydrogen atoms in solids, which are much denser than gases. In March, he and his colleagues announced a new storage medium: tiny magnesium crystals wrapped in narrow strips called graphene nanoribbons. Hydrogen stored in this manner, they found, could provide nearly as much energy as the same volume of gasoline, while weighing much less.
Urban compared the process to baking chocolate chip cookies, where magnesium is the chocolate chip — the key part — because it holds the hydrogen. “We want a chocolate chip cookie with as many chocolate chips as possible,” he said, and graphene nanoribbon makes excellent cookie dough. The nanoribbon also helps hydrogen enter and exit the magnesium crystals quickly while boxing out oxygen, which competes with hydrogen for space in the crystals. Urban peers into the super-thin realm at the Advanced Light Source, a domed laboratory with an expansive view of San Francisco and the neighboring bay. There, electrons are accelerated to near the speed of light, generating powerful X-rays that can be used to finely probe the atomic structure of materials.

At the ALS, Urban and his colleagues learned exactly how graphene wrapped around and bonded tightly to magnesium. Those bonds, they believe, are what make the composite material stable over long periods — an important trait for real-world use. Elsewhere, researchers are taking super-thin layers of materials and stacking them into three-dimensional blocks that have properties distinct from both 2D and conventional 3D materials. Kwabena Bediako, a chemist at the University of California, Berkeley, published a study last year in Nature that described how he and his colleagues had embedded lithium ions between many layers of two-dimensional materials, including graphene. “We start out with a piece of bread, slap on some mayo, bring it down on cheese, bring it down on some ham,” he said. “You can do that as many times as you want and create a sandwich.” By varying the different layers in the three-dimensional stack, the researchers were able to fine-tune how the materials stored lithium, which could lead to the development of new, high-capacity batteries for electronic devices. One place where two-dimensional materials are blossoming is in Singapore, in the lab of Liu Zheng, at Nanyang Technological University. Singapore is known as the Garden City, and the tiny country has zealously filled its land with greenery — including at the university, which has placed gardens in spare nooks all around its modern buildings. Many TMCs, including the MoS2 used by Palacios to absorb radio waves, show potential for various industrial uses. The twodimensional platinum selenide made in the Singapore lab could make for cheaper fuel cells, which typically use the precious metal platinum to separate a hydrogen atom’s proton from its electron. Switching to two-dimensional platinum selenide could reduce the amount of platinum used by 99%, Zheng said. Nanyang Technological University is in talks with manufacturers about commercializing the technology. The future isn’t yet twodimensional, but it’s getting closer. Amos Zeeberg – The New York Times

Replacing ‘Tribal Knowledge’ with Advanced Technology; Ultradent Products’ Story When you think about manufacturing here in the USA, it is truly inspiring to hear about companies like Ultradent Products. The privately held company, based in Salt Lake City for the past 4 decades, designs a n d m a n u fa c t u re s dental products that are used worldwide. And in a testament to manufacturing in the USA, nearly all design and manufacturing of Ultradent Products happens in Utah. The company began h u m b l y — i n D r. Fischer’s basement, with his children as its first employees. ON Their ANCA MX-7, As a young dentist, Ultradent Grinds Core Pins Dr. Fischer realized with Diameters as small as that rapid, profound .006 hemostasis was imperative for quality operative dentistry. Because there wasn’t a product on the market that predictably controlled bleeding, he developed one. Today, products that address this issue, including Astringedent® and Viscostat®, are flagship products for the company. Not far from the company’s headquarters, is a satellite building that was added a couple of years ago to accommodate Ultradent’s growth (it has seen year over year growth every year since its inception). The building houses an engineering team, a molding operation plus a machine shop. The employees in this facility aren’t doing production work; rather the intricate parts they make are one-offs used for molds, dies, automation, assembly lines and custom parts. Since the shop does small quantity, often-complex parts, their employees are some of the most experienced Journeyman caliber tool & die makers. Michael Krumpelmann, Machine Shop Manager with 15 years tenure with the company, says, “A few years ago we knew that Eldon, our most experienced grinder, would soon be retiring. him with a grinder o f h i s c a l i b e r, particularly one who would have the ‘tribal knowledge’ inherent with grinding our products.” To complicate matters, the grinder Ultradent had acquired more than a decade ago would have to be replaced. Michael and Eldon did some research on the best CNC grinders for their shop. 2 builders made the short list.
“In the end, we chose the ANCA MX-7 grinder from Smith Machinery”, Michael says. “He elaborates, “In particular the flexible software and outstanding simulation was something we found extremely valuable, and we also liked the fact that ANCA provides a complete solution; designing and manufacturing almost all their technology in-house (e.g. CNC, motors, & drives, polymer casting, spindles, software).” Jerry Perkins, Regional Sales Manager for ANCA, says, “The MX-7 Linear is a powerful, versatile CNC tool grinder. It is built to meet the demands of high output, high precision manufacturing. The powerful 38 kW (51 HP) permanent magnet spindle provides high torque at lower RPM, which is ideal for carbide grinding and a wide range of other applications.” Still, he and the ANCA team were resistant to bid on and recommend their machines based upon Ultradent’s unique requirements. Jerry elaborates, “As an example, one part they grind has a diameter of .008” and a length of 3”. On a CNC grinder with a part of this length, the part can deflect even from rotation! Over subsequent discussions, evaluation and testing, we determined the ANCA MX7 would meet their requirements.” Michael adds, “We are stubborn and we knew it could be done!” Ultradent took possession of the ANCA MX-7 in November of 2018, and Eldon retired just under 8 months later. During this period, Michael knew he had little time to equip the shop with employees who could learn the ANCA MX-7 quickly. “Key employee Lewis Jeffs is an experienced and talented machinist”, Michael says, “so he is one of the Ultradent team members we selected to learn the ANCA.” He adds, “Lewis didn’t know grinding until we put him into this position.” The 2nd team member selected to learn the ANCA MX-7 was Scott Jessop, who was a new hire and had no prior machining (let alone grinding) experience before joining Ultradent. Michael says, “We are extremely specialized in what we make and we have a strong team with longevity with our company. For additions to the team, we sometimes select someone with the right attitude and aptitude, and then we train the individual with our methodology. Scott is one of these hires, as he’s been on the ANCA for less than a year now.”
Both Scott and Lewis received ANCA provided training, at both at ANCA’s location and onsite. The team agrees that ANCA’s John Francis, who came onsite to provide training, was outstanding. How is the machine shop performing since the ANCA arrived?

Scott Jessop is the sole grinder that works the afternoon shift after Lewis leaves work. Michael says, “Scott is learning everyday but he is highly competent
Lewis says, “Our ANCA is so easy to set-up and program we have used the machine for parts that are typically done on a turning center, and the precision far exceeds that of a lathe. With its rigidity, flexibility and accuracy, we’re also using our ANCA for not just grinding, but also to do Jig grinding operations.”
Lewis was an experienced machinist when he started on the ANCA, but he had no grinding experience. Today, Lewis is a highly skilled CNC grinder.

Life in the Ultradent machine shop has changed dramatically since the ANCA MX-7 came into the shop.
“Core pins that were taking 12 hours pre-ANCA are now taking 30 minutes to an hour and they are done more accurately”, Lewis says. Today, Ultradent can not only produce many more core pins, but, as Michael says, “Engineers come to us and say “if you can make them this small, can we try a design that goes even smaller and longer?”
He sums it up: “Our ANCA is a tool and cutter grinder, but it is also a 5 axis machine. It can be programmed to do anything.”
Clark Smith, owner of the company, says, “Our expertise at Smith Machinery, is in unattended operation and advanced multi-tasking as well as 5-axis machining, EDM, and Swiss-turning. In addition, we stock a full line of quality products for sawing, grinding, milling and manual/CNC combination lathes. 2019 Additive Manufacturing Market Growth Surpassed $10B Worldwide According to SmarTech Analysis the global additive manufacturing market grew in 2019 to over $10.4B crossing the pivotal double-digit billion threshold for the first time in its nearly 40-year history. However, while several complex factors contributed to a second year of slowing growth rates in the industry, long term opportunities for the high-profile collection of technologies remains encouraging. Furthermore, while smaller and new entrants to the market have driven growth the past several quarters, SmarTech believes that larger firms who have properly filled out their product lines will be the main revenue drivers in the future. The analysis within the 2020 Additive Manufacturing Market Outlook and Summary of Opportunities report focuses on providing segmented market data and insights for the metals, polymer, and ceramic additive manufacturing segments, while highlighting influential activities across key AM markets including aerospace, healthcare, automotive, service bureaus, and emerging opportunities like consumer goods, energy, and industrial. SmarTech’s report said that overall growth rates on a quarterly basis for the market dipped during the middle of the year after a relatively strong first quarter and the market declined just as additive technologies began to truly start penetrating into applications and markets associated with production and manufacturing rather than prototyping, product development, and research. SmarTech believes that there are now two distinct ‘zones’ of market activity with very different rules for success, and while the industry as a whole continues to evolve into a higher echelon market involved with manufacturing, many competitors must mature in terms of offerings and capabilities before significant growth in this market can be achieved.

Smaller, more agile players have provided much of the growth across the AM industry during 2019, magnifying a trend that has been playing out over several consecutive quarters. These companies have seen success due to advantages of having technology platforms more focused on the future customer while larger players remained bottlenecked by efforts to industrialize products and platforms of the past to meet current demands. SmarTech anticipates that while the collective groups of new, nimble, VC-backed companies in the industry will continue to help drive growth for the foreseeable future, the largest established players who have invested into providing a diverse set of additive solutions which can be readily implemented into a broader chain of manufacturing processes will eventually return to driving market revenue.

Root Cause Corrective Action: It’s Important Bretta Kelly, owner BMSC, LLC ; Illustrations: Josh Kelly Over a decade has passed since I made a simple presentation on how to document a corrective action, and it still applies in modern times. Root Cause and Action to Prevent Recurrence are both requirements of the corrective action records from the ISO 9001 and Aerospace standards. Companies still struggle recording the Root Cause and applying it to the Action to Prevent Recurrence; the presentation is divided into nine sections, and it can assist any present-day company looking to improve. How to Document a Corrective Action: Always take the approach that the person reading the corrective action record may not be a person who was involved in finding or solving the problem. Corrective Action: • • • •
Problem Statement Root Cause Containment / Immediate Action Action to Prevent Recurrence Example: o o o o o
√ √
Do not summarize to the point that you lose meaning of what you were trying to say Problem Statement; Lamp Broke Root Cause; Fell on the floor Containment / Immediate Action; Buy new Lamp / Replace Lamp Action to Prevent Recurrence; Move Lamp to the middle of the table
This is documented so briefly it is hard to know what really happened or if the correct solution was reached. There should always be a direct one to one relationship with the action to prevent recurrence and the root cause.
How to Test This • The easiest way to test if a Corrective Action is documented correctly is to look at the Action to Prevent Recurrence and then see if it addresses the root cause. • If it does, then you are good. • If it does not you need to research if it does not match because the root cause was documented wrong (common) or if you jumped to the wrong or potentially wrong solution because the root cause was not in depth enough. In the Earlier Example the Real Story is As Follows: • Problem Statement – The lamp fell off the table and broke on the tile floor • Root Cause – The lamp was plugged into an outlet on the side of the room, so the cord was stretched across the floor to the outlet. My children were running through the house and tripped over the cord therefore knocking the lamp onto the floor and breaking it • Containment / Immediate Action - Buy new Lamp / Replace Lamp • Action to Prevent Recurrence – Use outlet under the couch for the lamp so the cord is not exposed. Just What Is The NUNTMA? Established in 2010, the NUNTMA ( Northern Utah Chapter of the The National Tooling and Machining Association) is a gathering place for machine shops in Northern Utah. The Northern Utah Chapter of the National Tooling and Machining Association’s mission is to help members achieve profitable growth and business success through advice, camaraderie, education, networking, information, advocacy, collaboration and services. “The National Tooling and Machining Association provides educational opportunities for our team, the sharing ideas for workforce development, networking with other machine shops and connections with associate members who support the machining industry. I continue to be amazed by the wonderful members and associates in the Northern Utah chapter who support and share tips on a wide range of machine shop related challenges. “The investment in the form of dues is small compared to the value and benefits gained”, — Bry Davis, Brendell Manufacturing
NUNTMA Message From the President Wes Michie, Skydandee As the new president of the Utah Chapter, I’d like to say thank you to Bry Davis and the outgoing board for all that they did during the last 2 years. We had some great events, and their leadership was excellent. Thanks to all those that came to the Mandarin this last month. We had a great time. Thanks, A Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain • 2

CATE Industrial for the really nice Goody boxes. I thought I’d take a chance to tell you a little about me. My wife and I live in Layton. We have 2 boys and we like camping, snowmobiling, dirt bikes and four-wheelers. From the time I was little until now, I have always enjoyed boy scouts. No matter where I go, I find myself involved in some sort of scouting event. My current adventure involves a community cub scout pack. I am currently the Tiger Den Leader. I grew up in a machine shop. I remember standing on step stools so I could reach the handles on the Bridgeport Mill. From unloading the material off the Truck to the saw, the machine, weld, heat treat, paint, and delivered to the customer. I’ve had a part in it. Sure, some days have their headaches, but I am thrilled I get to do something I enjoy for a living. I look forward to getting to know those of you I don’t know. I am excited about the things we can solve together. Thank you for your support.
