“Wealth is not to feed our egos but to feed the hungry and to help people help themselves.” Andrew Carnegie It is tax season, and while all year round it is altruistic to donate time and money to those who are less fortunate than us, at this time of year, we can make an extra effort that offers the added incentive of potentially reducing our tax burden. Hmm. Killing two birds with one stone.
I live in Arizona, and while I was terribly let down with the performance of our Arizona Cardinals, there is a Cardinals player whom I am proud to have on our team. Larry Fitzgerald — You have likely heard of this fine athlete, but that isn’t what I am writing about. In fact, wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald is one of only 3 finalists for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year honor. The Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award recognizes an NFL player for his excellence on and off the field. First established in 1970, it was renamed in 1999 after the late Hall of Fame Chicago Bears running back, Walter Payton. Each team nominates one player who has had a significant positive impact on his community. Panthers tight end Greg Olsen and Giants quarterback Eli Manning also remain in the running for the award given to NFL stars that go above and beyond in their communities. “Larry, Eli and Greg are not only top-tier athletes, but also men of great character, integrity and generosity of spirit,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. “Their passion for community and helping others is having a positive impact on countless individuals and communities, and it’s something we should all celebrate.” For the winner of the award, which will be announced Feb. 4, $1 million will be donated. Half will go to a charity of the winner’s choosing, while another $500,000 will be donated to the expansion of Character Playbook, a joint educational project between the NFL and United Way. The two runner-ups will each receive $125,000 to give to a charity of their choice and another $125,000 to Character Playbook. The Barrett-Jackson Auction, which is held throughout the United States, just ended, and it was hosted in Scottsdale, Arizona. For car enthusiasts, this is considered by many to be the World’s Greatest Collector Car Auction. But what you may not be aware of is that the event started as a charitable event. More than forty-six years ago, the first Barrett-Jackson event was held to raise money for the Scottsdale library. While charitable contributions weren’t yet available for the 2017 auction as we went to print, just last year, the Scottsdale auction raised more than $3.4 million, with more than $88 million raised in its history up to last year. Its causes today are much more encompassing than the Scottsdale library, with a focus on education, medicine and Veterans. We are always looking for ways to create a better workforce, whether we own a manufacturing business or we run a department at an Aerospace OEM. Why not create a ‘Walter Payton ‘Person of theYear’ ( we do want to be inclusive to both men and women), and allow our employees to nominate a superior employee who demonstrates exemplary charitable activities. Not only do we demonstrate recognition for performance in the workplace, but we also recognize characteristics in the winner that demonstrate caring and compassion. This is our first Rocky Mountain issue of the near year. May 2017 be a year filled with kindness, generosity of spirit, and a stronger US economy that facilitates manufacturing!

Falcon 9 Returns To Flight With Successful Iridium Launch A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket blasted off last month and successfully delivered ten Iridium Communications satellites into polar orbit one hour and 14 minutes later, while the Falcon 9’s first stage successfully landed on a ship off the California coast. It was the first SpaceX flight since a Falcon 9 exploded Sept. 1 on a launch pad at Cape Canaveral, Florida, destroying the Amos-6 communications satellite. SpaceX blamed the failure on a helium tank in the rocket’s second stage that ruptured during fueling for a static-fire test, and the company said earlier this month it would adjust the rocket’s fueling process. The launch marks an important milestone for Iridium, a company eager to begin replacing its 66 global communications satellites with its next-generation constellation. The oldest satellites in Iridium’s A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Despite their advanced age, customers around the world have a 98 percent chance of getting a signal, Matt Desch, Iridium Communications chief executive, said prior to the launch. Nevertheless, Iridium is eager to begin replacing each of its satellites with a new model designed to offer customers more bandwidth and higher data speeds. With its first two launches, Iridium plans to plug holes in its existing constellation, where aging satellites are no longer functioning. The Jan. 14 launch was aimed at one of those orbital planes. The next launch, scheduled to fly from Vandenberg in April, will fill the second hole, Desch said.

5” x 6” (125mm x 150mm)
Iridium purchased seven Falcon 9 launches from SpaceX at a total cost of between $450 million and $500 million, Desch said. SpaceX plans to fly ten satellites on each of those missions. The next launch is scheduled for April with subsequent launches occurring every two months. Iridium hopes to have its new constellation in place in early 2018. SpaceX and Ir idium officials attending the launch were extremely pleased the Falcon 9 launch occurred on schedule after multiple delays in recent weeks. Because the ten Iridium satellites needed to reach a specific orbital plane, the launch window was instantaneous. Any delay in the scheduled launch would have meant another 24-hour delay, Desch said. Approximately eight minutes after launch, SpaceX landed its first stage on the company’s drone ship in the Pacific Ocean called Just Read the Instructions. It was the seventh time SpaceX was able to land its first stage on an uncrewed ship. The Jan. 14 launch was SpaceX’s 28th successful launch.

Preparing for Growth in U.S. Manufacturing With the extensive growth researchers are forecasting in U.S. manufacturing, manufacturers across the country are focusing on modernizing their plant floors. More than half of manufacturing leaders expect revenues to grow 5 percent or more each year over the next five years, according to a recent report from IndustryWeek. As we look forward to 2017, there will be substantial opportunities for manufacturers and integrators to implement new automation technologies and revolutionize manufacturing processes that will be essential to ushering in the next era of American manufacturing. As companies look to expand and take advantage of new opportunities in the coming months, a challenge many will face is one of too many choices and not enough time. With so many new technologies available—3D vision, robotics and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) interconnectivity—companies might be wondering what to invest in first, how do make the move from outdated machines to a modern, interconnected manufacturing floor, or how to reduce waste and improve profits through automation. These challenges are compounded by the fact that businesses need to make these decisions quickly to capture market share or defend current positions. Fortunately, we have seen a significant shift in sentiment toward system integrators over the past 12-18 months. In the past, system integrators were brought in to provide specific services or equipment. Clients are now much more collaborative, often sharing their business challenges and one- to three-year goals. This open dialogue allows integrators to obtain a greater understanding of business objectives, helping them provide more comprehensive solutions to improve the efficiency of A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

manufacturing operations. In this role, system integrators act as an extension of the client’s internal team and have a vested interest in the long-term health of the customer. We see this trend continuing as we move forward into the future of U.S. manufacturing. As companies look to reshore some of their manufacturing facilities in the U.S., they will be faced with keeping production costs low and finding adequate staff to meet their needs. Companies that have been manufacturing overseas might be accustomed to aggressive production cost targets, higher labor availability and lower overall manufacturing expenses. These scenarios might be difficult for companies, but they will also provide opportunities to refine and update antiquated manufacturing practices. Robotic work cells and IIoT promise to deliver profound and lasting changes to the way goods are manufactured. Both technologies not only address short-term issues like labor shortages and production visibility, but also provide long-term advantages like flexible scalability and preventive analytics. Automated robotic work cells address the labor shortage problem head on. Robots can run as little or as much as needed and always stand at the ready. This flexibility allows companies to ebb and flow around production seasonality; ramping up during peak periods and slowing during off times all without adding or subtracting labor. Further, as the definition of collaborative robots continues to expand, we are creating new ways for robots and humans to work together safely and efficiently. Whether it is a truly collaborative robot or a work cell that uses scanning safety technologies, robots are quickly moving to the center

of production environments across numerous industries. The Robotics Industry Association has reported significant growth in industrial robot installations through the first quarters of 2016. I agree with industry experts, and believe this trend will continue to accelerate through the end of the decade. Arguably, the most impactful change we will soon see in manufacturing is the expanded usage of IIoT technologies. IIoT has been talked about for the past few years, but adoption rates have been slow. Some of the world’s largest manufacturers are already investing heavily in these technologies because they see the immediate benefits in having real-time data and cloud-based access. I believe we will see more widespread adoption in 2017, as leading companies like Rockwell Automation provide enterprise solutions that connect all equipment on a manufacturing floor. This interconnectivity will allow operators to immediately spot areas of waste or bottlenecks in production. Predictive analytics will provide companies with the ability to proactively plan their maintenance strategies so components can be replaced before they fail, allowing a production environment that provides real-time data. Additionally, predictive analytics allows operators to quickly and easily identify areas of waste, allowing companies to reduce waste and increase profit.Source: Automation World; By: Michael Lindley
Defense Industry Hopeful Trump Will Pick Up Obama’s Legacy of Export Control Reform As US President Donald Trump took office on Jan. 20, the defense industry will be looking for him to build on one of the Obama

administration’s wonkiest accomplishments: the quiet but sweeping overhaul of the many regulations that control weapons exports. The goal of the administration’s export control reform effort was to simplify the US Munitions List (USML) — which enumerates the defense articles that are controlled by the State Department under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) — by moving items to Commerce Department control, resulting in less paperwork and a faster approval process. As of 2016, all USML categories, with the exceptions of firearms, ammunition and artillery, have gone through the reform process, and the State Department has started its second review of the list. For the defense aviation industry, the impact has been dramatic. State Department licenses for items classified by the USML as “aircraft and related items” have downsized by about two thirds, said Rob Hart, who works at the State Department’s Office of Defense Trade Policy, which implements the initiative. “The administration was very clear to try to lessen, or even eliminate if possible, the burden on supplier companies that were having to try to navigate ITAR-level restrictions on essentially commercial technology, simply because of definitions,” said Remy Nathan, Aerospace Industries Association’s vice president of international affairs. The most sophisticated, advanced and classified aircraft — like the B-21 and B-2 bombers and F-35 Joint Strike Fighter— and all of their related systems and components remain completely controlled under ITAR. But older and commercial-derived aircraft saw many parts and systems move to the Commerce Control List (CCL). A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Utah’s Manufacturing Sector Among Nation’s Strongest
Within the industry, medical equipment and supplies manufacturing increased by 27 percent, with motor vehicle and parts manufacturing increasing by 30 percent over the five-year period. Employment within the industry is among the higher-paying sectors in the Utah economy, state officials said. The average monthly manufacturing salary in Utah in 2015 was $4,533, while the statewide average monthly wages across all industries was $3,621, according to the Utah Department of Workforce Services. The industry is doing so well, in fact, that companies are having a difficult time filling positions with qualified workers, said Todd Bingham, president of the Utah Manufacturers Association — the state’s largest trade organization representing the industry throughout Utah. Utah currently has approximately 3,500 manufacturing businesses statewide that employ about 100,000 people, Bingham said. “Really, the only thing that’s holding our companies back is the inability to find skilled workers,” he said. “That is different than some areas of the country.”
Bingham said local companies want to A recent agreement involving expand their operations but have diffithe nation’s president and vice culty attracting younger workers who president has highlighted a typically don’t consider manufacturing sector of the national economy as a long-term career path. that has suffered for years: manufacturing. “One, they don’t know anything about it, so they are saying, ‘Why would I go In Utah, however, the manu- work in manufacturing when I don’t facturing industry is one of the know anything about it?’” he explained. key growth sectors in the state’s long-range economic plan. involved in composites, aerospace, medical devices and other high-tech fields, the industry needs smart individuals
who can communicate well, think critically and solve problems, he said. Bingham also noted that many sectors are looking for candidates with two-year certificates and skill sets that allow them to begin working at a high level right away. “Today’s generation is going to have to adapt a little bit with what is the skill set (required) depending upon their interests,” he said. “This is not your grandfather’s manufacturing industry. It’s evolving, automated, high-tech and clean. It’s not dark, dirty and dead end.” In Utah, manufacturing is among the key components of the state’s overall economic pie, explained Val Hale, executive director of the Governor’s Office of Economic Development. “We have such a diverse economy, and underpinning all of that is manufacturing,” Hale said. “It really is such a critical part of our economy.” Among the issues faced by manufacturers in the Beehive State and across the country is global trade. As noted in the Carrier example, many companies are choosing to shift manufacturing operations abroad to save money. Some critics blame international trade agreements for the exodus, including deals such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership. The partnership is a trade agreement among 12 Pacific Rim nations, excluding China. The final proposal was signed in February in Auckland, New Zealand, and is awaiting ratification. The aim of the 30-chapter agreement is to “promote economic growth; support the creation and retention of jobs; enhance innovation, productivity and competitiveness; raise living standards; reduce poverty in

the signatories’ countries; and promote transparency, good governance, and enhanced labor and environmental protections.” Critics argue the agreement would adversely affect working families in the U.S. to the benefit of large corporations, while supporters claim the deal would help stabilize commerce between the United States and its Pacific trade partners. Hale said such agreements are of great benefit to states such as Utah that have a trade surplus — meaning more product exports than imports. So local businesses would be concerned to see those deals eliminated, he said. “If (the nation) does something that is going impact (Utah’s) ability to export, it could have a fairly dramatic effect on our economy,” Hale said. “Utah, more than other states, could be negatively impacted by some the trade restrictions that are being talked about (nationally).” Source: Ravell Call, Deseret News A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Kwik Tek, Inc. was acquired by Falconhead Capital, LLC, a middle market private equity firm that specifically seeks out sports, leisure and lifestyle focused ventures. Another partner is Virginia-based M3 Outdoor Investments, which is led by the former CEO and founder of BLACKHAWK! Products Group Michael Noell. KwikTek -- which manufactures Airhead and SportsStuff products -- was founded in 1991 and is a distributor and supplier of outdoor branded products for recreational water sports and winter sports markets. Its products include towables, inflatables, life jackets, wakeboards, kneeboards, snowshoes, trekking poles, snow sleds, pool floats, lounge items, and related accessories.
Mikron Is Further Expanding Its U.S. HQ In Metro Denver Mikron Automation will again expand its U.S. headquarters, located in Arapahoe County, with an additional 19,000 square feet of industrial space at its existing facility, which is part of the DoveValley Business Park. Mikron Automation is a division of Switzerland-based Mikron Group, which manufactures customized automation products for pharmaceuticals, medical, automotive, consumer, electrical and construction uses. The company moved its U.S. headquarters from Aurora after the development of its n ew facility in Arapahoe County, which began in 2015. “Mikron is truly a forward-thinking company with keen insight into how to continue strengthening relationships with current and future customers across North and Central America,” said Celeste Tanner, chief development officer of Confluent Development. Denver-based Confluent Development developed Mikron’s initial space in the business park as an anchor tenant for a 25-acre technology park. After the expansion is complete, which is expected this spring, Mikron will have 82,000 square feet. “With our relocation in 2015 supporting improved operational processes, we’ve been thrilled to see that our current demand has far exceeded projections, triggering the need for immediate growth,” said Mike Gunner, general manager for Mikron in Denver. “We’re very pleased to soon have A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •
Kwik Tek’s Aaron Kramer will stay on as CEO. “Their market expertise makes them the perfect partners to help ensure that even more people can enjoy our exciting products,” Kramer said. Falconhead Capital CEO David Moross said he was attracted to the Colorado company because it had been well managed and was growing organically 17 to 20 percent a year. It already was expanding into new warehouse space and has roughly 1,500 products.

Share prices of Colorado’s uranium companies soared last month after the world’s leading uranium-mining country said it’s cutting back on production. Kazakhstan said it would cut its uranium production by 10 percent this year; a move that sent shares of Colorado uranium companies soaring. Bloomberg reported that Kazakhstan will cut output by more than 2,000 tons this year. The country reportedly mined nearly 40 percent of the world’s uranium last year. Last month, president-elect Donald Trump’s tweet that the U.S. “must greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability” also sent shares of Uranium Resources soaring. Uranium is a key ingredient in the production of nuclear weapons, as well as used in the nuclear power industry.

aided design (CAD). For example, in 2002, when Dassault Aviation praised the benefits of designing its Falcon 7X with Dassault Systemes’ Catia software, it highlighted the better integration between design and production. In ATR’s case, the idea is to streamline repair and modification processes. New Spindle Sales and Repair Service High Speed • High Torque • High Quality
When a customer asks for guidelines to perform a new repair, ATR engineers must refer to paper drawings and 20-30-year-old software. The technique is relatively slow, and some computing tools are becoming or are already obsolete. Because many young engineers are familiar only with CAD tools, ATR has had to instruct them on drawing-board use. The company determined that four years spent digitizing drawings would be worthwhile, given that an ATR aircraft’s service life is 30 years or more. “We will save time when devising each repair drawing; we will thus be faster in answering our customers’ requests,” Vladimir Camuzard, head of structures support engineering, tells Aviation Week. Customers include airlines and maintenance, repair and overhaul service providers.
ATR is digitizing the design drawings for the ATR 72 regional turboprop, a four-year endeavor that shows how 3-D digital mockups have become all-important, even for an aircraft in service for three decades. The need the manufacturer identified is different than what manufacturers usually emphasize when using the latest in computer-
Another anticipated improvement is the readability of design drawings. “When a customer has to replace a part, their maintenance technicians have to use the drawings we send them,” but they lose time in trying to decipher them, Camuzard explains. Customers had therefore suggested that ATR use a virtual mockup, which would give them a better understanding of the aircraft’s design and help them train their employees. 3D Printing Will Decrease Costs for Tools, Dies and Molds The Manufacturing Demonstration Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) looks at new technologies and works with industry to bring innovations in additives and composites over into industry. Their efforts include technologies that increase deposition rates of 3D printing, new materials for 3D printing and new applications for 3D printing. The director of the facility, Bill Peter, explains that one area of focus is tooling for composites. The United States lost 37 percent of the tool and die industry in less than a decade, and ORNL believes that 3D printing can help bring this work back from overseas because it can reduce lead time from six months to a matter of days. PREPARING FOR ITS 100TH YEAR MANUFACTURING POTATO FOOD PROCESSING EQUIPMENT! Idaho Steel will be celebrating its Centennial anniversary next year! The company, based in Idaho Falls, Idaho, designs and manufactures potato food processing equipment – serving an industry that is best described as recession resistant. Their equipment can be found in every continent in the world, co-owner Davis Christensen says, with the exception of the Antarctic. The company opened for business in 1918 as a small fabrication shop. After World War II, Davis says, “The processing world opened up, with companies like McDonalds mass producing fast food. Idaho Steel, with its long history in fabrication, was well positioned to participate in the potato food processing manufacturing industry. In fact, Idaho Steel’s machines were among the first to produce dehydrated potato flakes and granules for the Army. In 1991 Lynn Bradshaw purchased the company, and today it is co-owned by Lynn’s family members (sons) Alan and DeLynn Bradshaw and his son-in-law Davis Christensen. Today, Idaho Steel is a complete OEM, with in-house capabilities including; • Engineering and Design – Using the latest advances in AutoCAD, Inventor design (including 3D Modeling), and manufacturing software, they are able to provide their customers with custom and off-the-shelf potato food processing equipment. Their latest innovation, yet to be rolled out, uses Virtual Reality technologies to enable customers to download a machine they wish to purchase, and virtually work with the machine. • Manufacturing – The company offers a fully tooled machining and fabrication shop. CNC processes are used in both fabrication and machining of all their products. They have recently added 3D printing to their manufacturing operations, and Davis says it is used to make smaller plastic parts that were tying up their machining centers, and can now be made quicker and more cost effectively. This also allowed them to combine several pieces into one, and allowed them to eliminate nuts and bolts that could come apart and fall into the equipment, and contaminate the food being processed. • Installation and Support – Idaho Steel supports the installation of their equipment into their customers’ facilities and they offer a complete parts and shipping department for their customers replacement parts requirements. Idaho Steel’s customers hail from all over the world, and their end-users include fast food giants such as McDonalds, as well as frozen potato manufacturers like Ore-Ida (the inventor of tater tots). Potatoes take on many shapes, from the hash browns we love, to tater tots, to curly fries, to diced potatoes, to Julienne potatoes, to mashed potatoes, to the standard French fries, just to name a few, and often fast food companies make their potato shape unique – much like a signature to their brand. Frozen potato manufacturers, too, have their own unique potato shapes that often require custom potato processing equipment. For this reason, Davis says, “We don’t make widgets – in fact many of the systems we design are custom.” Idaho Steel Single Auger Cooker A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Idaho Steel’s potato processing machines are largely manufac-
tured with stainless steel, and they are built to last. In fact, many Idaho Steel food-processing machines built 50 years ago are still in service today. Today, the company manufactures four different process lines: Flake, form, fry and mash. Each line requires several different machines. More than 2 decades ago, Idaho Steel formed a partnership with Kiremko, a Dutch company that also manufactures equipment for the potato processing industry. Davis says that the partnership with Kiremko enabled Idaho Steel’s further growth in the worldwide market. Idaho Steel’s ownership team also offers their own branded potato processing equipment through a company called Reyco Systems, which the family partners own. Across the 2 entities, Idaho Steel and Reyco Systems, the companies reside in 4 facilities totaling ~ 100,000 square feet, and they employ more than 220 people, all in Idaho. In order to remain competitive over the past nearly 100 years, Idaho Steel has consistently invested in superior equipment for their manufacturing operations. In fact, they have purchased a number of their machine tools through Smith Machinery over the past several decades. Clark Smith, 4th generation owner of Smith Machinery, says, “Idaho Steel has been a loyal customer for many years now — they purchased their early Cincinnati shears and press brakes from my father, Tracy Smith, and some of these decades old machine tools are still operational today.” Under the current ownership, Idaho Steel continues to purchase many of their machine tools through Smith Machinery. Brad Birkinbine, Machine Shop Manager with more than 20 years of tenure at the company, says, “I tend to restrict the number of machine tool dealers who we work with and I can say that when I need a superior, solid machine, I go to Smith Machinery. The Smith Machinery team is outstanding — our Sales Engineer Klaus Lassig and owner Clark Smith are just
so knowledgeable. They also pay attention to our business, and they understand it so that they can make machine tool recommendations that are based upon our business and requirements.” He continued, “With some other machine tool dealers, you feel they are just proposing a machine to close a sale.” Service is a critical component in Idaho Steel’s machine tool purchases. Brad says, “Smith Machinery’s training and service is exceptional, and I would grade them a 99%.” He added that the training provided by AJ and the service provided by Larry and Paul is also best in class. “We call Larry and Paul our ‘go-to’ guys, and when we have any questions or issues they are here in a heartbeat”, Brad elaborated. Davis adds, “Smith Machinery takes great care of us.”
stress for our team.” Klaus sees a special work ethic in the team at Idaho Steel. As a former machine shop owner, Klaus recognizes the importance of a dedicated team. “There are so many people at Idaho Steel who genuinely care about the quality of work and the end product. The level of detail is so impressive; in fact when I saw the legs for one of their dryer drums, they were so perfect that I was sure they were robotically welded – in fact, the welder who had just finished welding on the legs, was standing nearby, and you could just see the pride he showed in his work. What you see at Idaho Steel is more like art, its not just functional.” Idaho Steel is not just celebrating 100 years next year, but they are poised to see many more decades servicing the potato food processing industry. To learn more about the company, go to idahosteel.com To learn about all of Smith Machinery’s fine line of precision machine tools, and their outstanding service, contact them at (801) 263-6403 or visit smithmachinetools.com
Smith Machinery purchased machines are seen throughout the company, and they include 6 Mazak VCNs (Ver tical Center Nexus), a Mazak VTC (Vert i c a l Tr ave l i n g Column) vertical machining center, and 11 Romi CNC machining centers. Recently they purchased the Mazak VTC-800/30-SR, a 5-axis, Vertical Traveling Column, vertical machining center. Brad says, “The swivel head delivers improved accuracy and repeatability due to the backlash free design, which allows the machining of complex features and contours.” He continued, “We’ve seen a significant reduction of machining processes and increased productivity, thanks to the additional axis.” Brad and Davis agree that superior machines are a necessary ingredient to manufacturing quality products for their customers, but they also recognize the value of their employees. Brad says, “My team leaders all have more than 20 years of tenure with the company, most with close to 30 years, and we remain loyal to Idaho Steel because it is a great place to work.” Davis adds, “Our experienced machinists appreciate that we are willing to invest in superior machines for their use. Not only do they embrace new technology, but since we service an industry that runs 24x7, the reliability of superior machines reduces the A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

The Psyche mission is scheduled to launch in 2023. “Lucy will visit a target-rich environment of Jupiter’s mysterious Trojan asteroids, while Psyche will study a unique metal asteroid that’s never been visited before,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington D.C. “This is what Discovery Program missions are all about – boldly going to places we’ve never been to enable groundbreaking science.” The Lucy project is named after the fossil named “Lucy” that anthropologists study as one of the earliest identifiable human predecessors. Levison’s career has been largely in conducting theoretical simulations to understand planetary formation. In running through models in 2008, he concluded the Trojan-class asteroids following Jupiter in orbit likely contain valuable real-world clues to how the planets formed. He and other SwRI researcher worked with Lockheed Martin Space Systems (LMSS) engineers and other teams of scientists to develop a proposal for a craft to go study them. The body of the Lucy spacecraft

will be another step in the lineage of LMSS-built probes that include the MAVEN spacecraft currently studying Mars’ atmosphere and the OSIRIS-Rex spacecraft headed to bring a sample back to earth from a near-earth asteroid. For this latest Discovery Program selection, NASA capped the spacecraft development cost at $450 million each and selected what to fund based on an assessment of each proposals risk, engineering development and research benefit. LMSS was involved in three of the five finalists. In addition to the Lucy proposal, LMSS and researchers proposed a pair of missions to visitVenus, a planet to which NASA hasn’t sent a science probe since 1989. Selecting the asteroid missions for the latest Discover Program projects means getting data on types of small bodies in the solar system that space probes have never visited before, Levison said. And doing so comes as scientists have been rethinking theories about how planets formed. Scientists used to think that planets formed accreting material from nearby in the solar system, but more recent research suggests the planets moved around as they formed and their gravity pulled in materials from one region of the solar system to another.
with the water and volatile compounds found on Earth having originated in the outer edges of the solar system, Levison said. Levison believes the Trojan-class asteroids are leftover from those processes, and getting detailed information about them will help scientists understand how the solar system we see came into being. He likened the solar system to a crime scene and theTrojan-class asteroids to small pieces of evidence illuminating what happened. The Lucy spacecraft will take several years to build. It won’t reach the first clump of Trojan asteroids until 2027, and it will fly by four of them over the next year. Then, after crossing the solar system assisted by the gravity of passing planets, it’s slated to reach the second set of Trojan asteroids in 2033. The spacecraft’s path takes it past examples of all the known types of Trojan-class asteroids. He credits Lockheed Martin researchers for figuring out Lucy’s complicated, pretzel-shaped trajectory, and for realizing the planets fortuitously will be positioned to help Lucy on its way.
“The planets are literally aligning to allow us to do this.” Levison said. “We looked at other launch dates, but there really isn’t an opportunity as rich Jupiter and Saturn are now believed to be the oldest planets in the solar as this one. It’s incredibly unlikely. Finding it took a lot of work.” Source: system and the Earth may be the byproduct of those planets’ formation, Denver Business Journal A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Mr. Trump isn’t the first president to come to Washington with a pledge to rein in the influence-peddling industry. Mr. Obama, a Democrat, made a similar promise when he took office eight years ago. Companies, labor unions and interest groups spent a total of $3.2 billion on lobbying in 2015, the last year for which complete figures are available, down slightly from $3.3 billion in 2008, the year before Mr. Obama took office, according to lobbying data compiled by the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics. However, the decline likely had more to do with lobbyists reducing the activity they reported on disclosure forms, rather than a real decline in lobbying activity.

state government has aggressively courted corporations, leading to sizable investments from eBay and Adobe, Cannon said. As for immigration, many of the state’s new residents come from Mexico and Central America, and though they’re not Mormons themselves, they typically have children at similarly high rates. Utah, then, is a bit of an oddity in the U.S., which on the whole has crept closer to the low birth rates seen in Europe and Japan. Relatively permissive immigration keeps the country from entering a Japan-style demographic tailspin, funneling in new residents to stand in for the ones not being born. But places like Utah, where birthrates resemble the Baby Boom of the 1940s and ’50s, are becoming increasingly rare. These population figures are not the final word. The Census continuously revises its estimates, sometimes to the detriment of certain states; one recent analysis found the Bureau had drastically overestimated international migration in previous estimates. The overall numbers will almost certainly change, and so could Utah’s position. But one way or another, things are changing, even there. The state’s fertility has dropped sharply in the past three decades, though it’s still high compared to the rest of the U.S. National trends probably play the biggest role—more women are finishing college and delaying motherhood. But LDS policy plays a role, too. In 2012, the Mormon church lowered the age at which women could become missionaries from 21 to 19, making the traditionally male rite-of-passage more accessible. Cannon thinks that could push Mormon women to delay marriage, and lower the number of children they’ll eventually have.

New Space: Spotlight on Some of the ‘Next Big Things’ Over the last few years, space has suddenly become hip with the likes of Spacebook, Google and Facebook resonating with young Millennials attracted by the possibilities of working on spacebased initiatives. In Silicon Valley, there are many start-up companies with lofty goals and big ambitions. But, who are these companies and why should you be aware of them? We take a look at some of the hottest new companies entering satellite and what they are looking to bring to our industry. RedWorks RedWorks has the ambition to create shelters that will enable human colonization of the Solar System, starting with Mars. The startup has taken lessons from ancient architecture, structures found in nature, the micro-home movement, and NASA studies to approach space habitats from a wholly unique perspective that will make the best use of additive manufacturing technologies. Keegan Kirkpatrick, founder and team lead at RedWorks, says the comA2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

pany is working on a project it is tentatively calling “Brick Zero,” which he describes as the first 3-D printed building material made wholly from onsite resources on Earth. “This is where we see the prime market, where this technology can be entered into — at least terrestrially, speaking. This will allow us to develop the technology that we want to eventually adapt to build infrastructure in space,” he adds. Kirkpatrick highlights the shifts he has seen in the past five years toward reusable launch technologies and in-space services, citing what he sees as a grander shift toward what could be an economic boom in space. “[This] really has lit a fire under us to try and develop the technology required to make that boom possible and more accessible for more companies,” he says. In terms of where he sees RedWorks going, he says in the next two to five years, it will be primarily focused on terrestrial market entry of things, where their technology can have an immediate impact while the space industry continues to develop. “And, at the same time lets us capitalize all that technology so that by the time we are prepared to deploy and service the market as it emerges in NewSpace, we’ll have all the bugs worked out and without having to raise additional funds.” RedWorks began as an entry into the NASA 3D Printed Habitat Challenge. Having made it to the finals in New York, the team was able to discuss and talk with others about some of their ideas. Deep Space Industries This is yet another exciting company to come out of SiliconValley. Deep Space Industries (DSI) is getting ready to launch its satellites next year with the plan to do a resource assessment on an asteroid. The company is developing a lot of the technologies it needs, both for advanced spacecraft to work around the asteroid, and for everything to take the asteroid apart and make it useful for other people, according to Daniel Faber, CEO of DSI. While Faber highlights other companies working on asteroid research, where he says DSI comes into the equation is on the technology side. The company is building very advanced nanosatellites and micro satellites. DSI has commercial products to provide mobility to satellites in orbit, such as orbital thrust systems, some high reliability avionics, and proximity operation sensors — a lot of things that are a really advancing the capabilities of small orbital spacecraft. Faber says this is “the company’s business right now” and is selling these spacecraft and that equipment. “We have sort of a leadership because we’re driven by our ambitious goals, and we end up building technology that is more capable, more robust, smaller and lighter and just generally aligned with what customers in Earth orbit are looking for in the next generation of satellites in terms of capability, launch constellations or those kinds of things,” he adds. DSI has adopted what it calls “a very rational approach” to financing. Faber says in order to execute its business plan, the company does not need extremely large amounts of capital up front.Where it needs capital is to help build the capability of its team and products to sell into the marketplace, creating revenue growth and momentum. Faber says DSI is now “well along” this path.
So, how does Faber see the business developing over the next 10 years? He believes in 10 year’s time, you can expect to be returning materials from the asteroid to Earth orbit, and making that commercially available as part of a growing space-based supply chain industry. DSI is going to be developing the technologies we need to realize this and also to use those materials. “Without the kinds of technologies to make use out of a large amount of nickel, or hydrocarbons for refueling satellites on orbit or supplying the ISS with consumables like water, for example, there’s not going to be any market for it. So a lot of the work we do is in market creation and the utilization of these technologies,” says Faber. “We are working with partners on that. A lot of people have pieces to this puzzle, and all we have to make sure is that they all work together. And have that bootstrap strategy that really shows how one product that we build leads into the next product, leads into the next, which is then useful in that 10-year timeframe.” Made in Space Made In Space, is developing additive manufacturing technology for use in the space environment. By manufacturing space assets in space, as opposed to launching them from Earth, the company plans to accelerate and broaden space development while also providing unprecedented access for people on Earth to use in-space capabilities. The biggest thing the company is working on right now is Archinaut, an on-orbit manufacturing and assembly system. Archinaut can additively manufacture parts, extended structures, and then it has the robotic capability to assemble them together. “This provides, if you think of building imaging systems, large dishes or connecting two large structures on orbit or, maybe repurposing some existing satellite systems,” says Spencer Pitman, head of product strategy at Made in Space. Pitman says Archinaut’s phase one is set to be complete late next year, probably in November. “Archinaut is a capability; it is a set of technologies. Some of those technologies we’ll demonstrate on-orbit, some of them we’ll demonstrate here,” he says. After 2019, Pitman expects Made In Space to launch Free Flyer, an integrated system of the basic mix of these technologies.

The company has had Research and Development (R&D) support from the likes of NASA and DARPA, among others.Yet, Lewicki points out Planetary Resources is actively developing capabilities for the commercial market, so this could be Fortune500 companies. In the remote sensing area, the company has the opportunity to measure the Earth from space and that’s taken the interest of companies like Bayer crop science and others in that area, according to Lewicki
Planetary Resources Planetary Resources is focusing its efforts on sensors that are able to detect the composition and presence of resources. This ranges from thermographic infrared, to hyper spectral imaging. The company is developing these sensors and creating what it considers a very low cost, deep space platform that will allow it to get out to near-Earth asteroids and measure their resources.
It seems like many of the jigsaw pieces are falling into place to help Planetary Resources become a success. “And with the development of the technology with the support of country-level activities … whether it be space policy and the U.S. passing laws recognizing the ownership of property rights from asteroids, or the development of space resources initiative in Luxembourg,” says Lewicki. “All of these are strong steps toward making this industry happen. Like all overnight successes there are many, many years of quiet work that put them into place. But this is how we’ve built the company, and really the only way that these sorts of things ever happen is through just a steady focus on the goal.”
“We have the opportunity today with things like the CubeSat standard, and other small satellite opportunities to test these technologies out in Earth orbit and use new manufacturing techniques, new technologies, innovations from other industries to create capability in space,” says Chris Lewicki, president and CEO at Planetary Resources. “We launched our first satellite last year, which represented a new computing architecture. This year we’re deploying the first thermographic sensor into space, which has been for commercial purposes. And we’re making progress toward that goal.”
In terms of what he sees happening over the next 10 years, Lewicki says, “the progress that we’ll see with all the different companies and interests working on that I think is going to bring this evermore into a kind of ordinary operation in space, where we are starting to see the beginnings of reusable boosters and an incredible commercial activity in space. And at Planetary Resources we’re proud to be contributing to something that we think is important to everything that we’ll be doing in space.” Source: Interactivesatellitetoday.com
Pitman sys the company is “confident” there will be a strong customer base for Archinaut, saying it offers “a good play for resiliency.”

AIA’s Melcher: “Megatrends” That Demand Focus in 2017 Aerospace Industries Association’s President and Chief Executive Officer Dave Melcher today articulated industry priorities with the new administration and the 115th Congress, and what the aerospace and defense industry must accomplish to help advance America’s fundamental interests in 2017 and beyond. In a speech before more than 300 industry and media representatives, Melcher outlined four “Megatrends” that are shaping a challenging policy arena in both Washington D.C. and a rapidly changing global environment. AIA is calling attention to these trends and outlining the actions necessary on its priorities to affect positive change in Washington in the areas of national security, stimulating the economy and bolstering American jobs. The four Megatrends include: The State of Deficit Politics, U.S. Leadership in a Global Economy, Smart Regulations, and Digital Economy. “The sorry state of deficit politics is the first Megatrend that requires much greater attention,” said Melcher. “We deeply regret the prolonged budget uncertainty, and unthinking austerity of recent years—especially when it comes to funding real and emerging security needs, and the technological investment that will pay untold dividends in the civil aviation and space arenas.” “Second, we’re disturbed by the increasing threats to policies that expand our industry’s trade competitiveness that have led to self-inflicted wounds to U.S. leadership in a global economy. We intend to continue assertively making the case for positive engagement in global trade.”
According to the company, the tests were conducted to “Third, we see a need for smart regulation to reduce the burden imposed demonstrate the missile’s by government rules, regulations and executive orders on industry.” ability to engage time-sensi“And fourth, the rapid transition to a digital global economy that we’re tive targets. The weapon followed a pre-planned route throughout the trial. For the second test, crew members fired the weapon for a longer duration, and also conducted a terminal dive maneuver to strike the intended target. Raytheon said the performance confirms the Tomahawk’s ability to attack heavily defended targets. A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

With these Megatrends influencing all aspects of the aerospace and defense enterprise, AIA outlined its priority goals aimed at affecting positive change in Washington and our industry. Those priorities focus on national security, a new Security Cooperation Doctrine, adherence to a federal fiscal year, approving directors for the Export Import Bank of the U.S., FAA reauthorization, selling American goods and services, and several others. “So as we seek clear paths for future economic growth, we need to build on our strengths,” Melcher said. “We must make a conscious decision to invest in the national security, civil space, aeronautics and 21st century air transportation systems. This will assure that our nation remains at the forefront of innovation, continues to be the hub for providing

OPEC Sees Market Stability In 2017 OPEC Secretary-General Mohammed Barkindo forecast that stability would return to oil markets this year while price hawk Venezuela said it hoped its crude basket would rise to $70 in coming months. The head of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries was back in Caracas for a second meeting in two months with President Nicolas Maduro whom he lavishly praised for an “inspirational” role in the producers’ pact to cut output. “We remain optimistic Mr. President that with the full and timely implementation of this historic decision between us and non-OPEC, in 2017 the situation of our economies will improve tremendously,” Barkindo said at a news conference with Maduro.
The Defense Department’s approval comes after earlier tests confirmed the missile’s ability to be used against ocean surface targets.
“And stability to the oil market that has eluded us for nearly three years will be restored on a sustainable basis in the interest of producers, consumers and the global economy.”
“International navies are seeking the level of sophisticated protection that SM-6 provides,” program director Mike Campisi. “The flexibility of this multi-mission effector drives significant savings for our partners and allies; it’s the exact opposite of a boutique missile.”
Under the accord reached in late 2016, OPEC, Russia and other non-members of the producer group will curtail oil output by nearly 1.8 million bpd, initially for six months.
Raytheon’s SM-6 was first deployed in 2013, with several variants tested in July 2015 and December 2016. During the trials, the SM-6
Maduro, who sent officials round the world over the last two years to lobby for output cuts, said he hoped the pact would help raise Venezuela’s crude basket to $60 in the first half and $70 later in 2017. A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Numerous research studies have identified a strong business case to increase the representation of women in manufacturing leadership. A recent meta-analysis of studies dating back to the 1990s shows that a firm’s financial performance increases when women are in more than token leadership roles. This is specifically true when a woman is the CEO. Having more women on corporate boards increases earnings and sales.

The Business Case for More Women in Manufacturing Leadership The many challenges facing the manufacturing sector include recruiting, retaining and advancing top talent. Manufacturing needs leaders who will create the future and inspire innovation. Research shows that women are ideally suited for this type of leadership, yet women continue to be under-represented in manufacturing at all levels. The data and research related to women in manufacturing create a compelling business case for having more women in manufacturing leadership. Fortunately, there are many effective strategies that leaders can adopt to increase the number and percentage of women in manufacturing. Data compiled from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that manufacturing includes a little less than 30% women, where the overall U.S. workforce is 47% women and women comprise 52% of all professionals and managers. Catalyst, an organization dedicated to accelerating the progress of women in the workplace, reports that in 2016, women comprised less than 30% of the S&P 500 durable goods manufacturing workforce, 20% of the executives and only 5% of the CEOs. The numbers are slightly better in non-durable goods manufacturing, where women comprise 36% of the workforce, 24% of the executives and 6% of the CEOs. Putting more women on teams increases the collective intelligence of those teams and improves team performance. Innovation related to new product design also increases when teams are gender-equal.The bottom line from five decades of research on women in leadership is that there is an irrefutable and verifiable link between women in leadership and improved business performance. While the business case supports the inclusion of women in manufacturing, the research is limited on how to effectively recruit, retain and advance women in these traditionally male-dominated organizations. Instead, the research has focused on why women leave male-dominated professions and organizations. An overview of these studies shows that women leave due to a lack of promotional opportunities, a lack of challenging, novel and interesting work assignments, poor relationships with leaders and co-workers and bias in the workplace. Pay is also cited as a reason women leave manufacturing, and data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics confirms a salary discrepancy, as women in manufacturing earned only 75.8% as much as men in 2015. Some women do leave the industry for family reasons, but the majority of women who leave manufacturing do not stay at home, but opt for a career in a different sector. The research we have done at CaseWestern Reserve University shows that those women who persist in manufacturing organizations do so because they believe they will achieve, they have challenging and interesting work that leads to promotional opportunities, they have the support of their leaders, and they find meaning in their profession. These women develop supportive relationships, not only at work but in their personal lives. These relationships help them navigate the sometimes difficult and mysterious career obstacles encountered in manufacturing. The women who persist have opportunities to develop their professional and leadership skills. For manufacturing organizations that want to recruit, retain and advance women in their organizations, we recommend the following strategies: • First, commit to an inclusive organization. Put goals in place for every level including at the highest levels of leadership. Identify the processes where women are excluded, such as in recruiting talent. Work with non-profits like Women in Manufacturing, AAUW, Catalyst and other organizations whose mission it is to increase the number of women in non-traditional careers. •To retain women in manufacturing, make sure that women have work that is challenging and interesting. Help them develop a comprehensive plan for their career so that they know they can achieve. Include opportunities
for women to develop their professional and leadership skills and competencies. We have found in the Leadership Lab for Women in Manufacturing offered by Women in Manufacturing and Case Western Reserve University, that about 40% of our graduates report promotions within a year of finishing the program. Participants also report a significant increase in self-confidence, a clearer vision of their future, and greater understanding of their strengths and how to leverage them within their organizations. • Assign mentors and sponsors. Mentors are people in the organization who guide women on career choices and aid in the development of a long-term career plan. Sponsors are high-level leaders in the organization who can help women obtain high-visibility assignments and promotions. Advancing women in organizations is often unfairly influenced by a societal bias that equates leadership with men. This is especially true in manufacturing, where the workforce continues to be dominated by men and women are still seen as “different.” Companies that recognize and mitigate these biases by developing processes and procedures to promote women to leadership will have a competitive advantage. Organizational change is difficult, and creating an inclusive culture continues to be one of the toughest challenges facing manufacturing. Research shows, however, that taking the important step of developing and implementing an aggressive plan to increase the number of women in manufacturing, especially in leadership, will have a positive impact on the organization. Defense Pick Mattis Backs Lockheed F-35, Manned Northrop B-21 Bomber Retired Marine Gen. James Mattis, who has been tapped as defense secretary, said that Lockheed Martin’s F-35 stealth fighter is key for the U.S. and its allies and supports having human pilots fly Northrop Grumman’s forthcoming B-21 bomber. The F-35 — which has an acquisition price tag of about $400 billion for more than 2,400 planes — has come under sustained criticism from President-elect Donald Trump, who again blasted the program Wednesday for being behind schedule and over budget. He also suggested the F-35 would face competition from Boeing’s (BA) F/A-18 Super Hornet. The F-35 “is critical for our own air superiority in the future because of stealth characteristics and some of the electronics capability that’s inherent in the airplane,” Mattis said during his confirmation hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee. Trump has “in no way shown any lack of support” for the F-35, he added, but just wants “bang for his buck.” Top U.S. allies like the U.K., Israel, Italy and Australia are also partners on the F-35 program (which is in production) or are buyers. Are you getting the most out of IBD? Our Getting Started Guide can help! “Many of our allies have bet their air superiority on their F-35 program, and it bonds us closely together with them,” Mattis said earlier.

When asked about the B-21 Raider, he paused and said he supports a manned bomber. That program, which is in early development, has been criticized by Senate Armed Services Chairman John McCain for not being more transparent on its total acquisition costs, which analysts have put at $50 billion to $80 billion. Northrop’s B-21 isn’t currently being designed to be unmanned but that capability would be a consideration in the future, the Air Force said last year. Shares of Lockheed closed down 1% at 252.62 on the stock market today. Northrop, which is also a major F-35 subcontractor, fell 1% as well to finish at 229.15, and Boeing slipped 0.7% to 158.29. Mattis also voiced support for the recapitalization of U.S. nuclear assets, including the Columbia-class ballistic-missile submarine, which will replace Ohio-class “boomers,” as well as development of new ground-based intercontinental ballistic missiles. General Dynamics is the prime contractor for the Columbia-class subs, which are in the design phase. Lockheed, Northrop, Boeing and Raytheon are expected to bid on the ICBM contract. But Mattis said he needs to look at the deterrence capabilities of the LongRange Standoff nuclear cruise missile meant to replace Boeing AGM-86B Air-Launched Cruise Missiles. That program’s cost has been estimated at $20 billion to $30 billion. Source: Investors.com A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Former U.S. Air Force Crew Chief Jeff Schnitzer, who now works as a general manager at GE Energy Connections, shares stories about the unexpected ways his military service helps him do his job.
How does flying a 20,000-pound Black Hawk helicopter relate to hitting quarterly earnings targets? How can responding to a tsunami help prepare someone to manufacture a part better and faster? Through mission-driven service in their military careers, veterans build strong leadership, ethics and ingenuity. Their skills are highly technical. They can embrace change and adapt (more important now than ever). It can be a challenge to translate this experience to corresponding skills in business—but the connections are clear. Here are four traits veterans consistently and uniquely bring to the table. Expect change -When you are a crew chief, the only known factor in your schedule is the time you start work. In this role you are responsible for an aircraft from the time it lands to the time it takes off on its next mission, and the conditions of the aircraft are not identifiable until it arrives. Manufacturing in U.S. Expands at Fastest Pace in Two Years American manufacturing expanded in December at the fastest pace in two years, reflecting firmer output and the biggest pickup in orders growth since August 2009. The Institute for Supply Management said that its index increased to 54.7, the fourth straight advance, from 53.2 a month earlier. The median forecast in a Bloomberg survey called for 53.8. Readings above 50 indicate growth. The ISM’s measure of orders surged 7.2 points, while its gauge of prices paid for materials climbed to the highest level since June 2011. The jump in bookings, including the strongest pace of export orders since May 2014, will help keep factories on solid footing early this year as business confidence improves. Plant managers responded to the brighter outlook by adding to staff at the fastest pace since the middle of 2015, according to the ISM’s report. Additional hiring and the pickup in inflation at the producer level help explain the Federal Reserve’s decision last month to raise interest rates. The ISM’s index of prices paid climbed to 65.5 from a November reading of 54.5. The group’s gauge of new orders increased to 60.2 last month after 53 in November. The measure of orders for overseas customers rose to 56 in December from 52. A rebound in export markets has helped give an added boost to U.S. factories following deceleration over the past couple years.
Domestic companies have also made progress getting inventories more in line with demand and there are early signs corporate investment is beginning to firm. To be sure, a rally in the dollar since the presidential election risks restraining overseas sales of U.S.-made goods. Production, Jobs The ISM’s gauge of production increased to 60.3, the highest since November 2014, from 56 a month earlier. A measure of factory employment picked up to 53.1 in December from 52.3 the prior month. The national payrolls report due Friday from the Labor Department is projected to show about 180,000 jobs were added in December, in line with the monthly average in 2016, according to the median estimate in a Bloomberg survey. “Employment is pretty strong throughout the country, and that’s certainly true for manufacturing,” Bradley Holcomb, chairman of the ISM factory survey, said on a conference call with reporters. Consumer confidence helped lift demand in the second half of last year, particularly after the election when “momentum built on itself,” he said. The ISM report also showed gauges of factory inventories shrank at a faster pace in December from a month earlier. Source: Bloomberg Business A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

A Denver space startup won a military contract that will help it prove its small satellite capabilities and get its first spacecraft into orbit this year.

York Space Systems, a year-old satellite manufacturing company, has entered a research and development partnership with the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command to be prime contractor on a small satellite slated to launch as a secondary payload in late 2017.
You Have 3 Very Good Reasons To Call BMSC:
Details of the Harbinger Mission aren’t being disclosed by the Army, including the value of York’s partnership contract.
√ Are You Ready To Simplify Your ISO9001 and/or Your AS9100 System? √ Are You Certified and Ready To Upgrade Your System To One of The New Standards of ISO9001:2015 and/or AS9100 Revision D?
The 10-employee company, based in Denver, is establishing a satellite factory that’s designed to be capable of turning out small satellite bodies weekly and having the final satellites assembled for customers in about a month.
√ Are You Ready To Begin the ISO 9001 and /or AS9100 Certification Process From Scratch or Need Help Maintaining Your Internal Audits or Management Reviews?
York Space Systems business model is to make satellite bodies and technology more affordable for commercial customers. Working with the Army on its first launch — ironing out costs and production timelines to keep the project on course — will be very beneficial to the company, said Dirk Wallinger,York Space CEO and founder.

“Ultimately, it is the government that’s been launching and deploying the most space assets for the past 50 years,” he said. “In addition to demonstrating capabilities for the Army, it has a lot of implications for us in the commercial market.”
the size of the Air Force and “rebuild the American military.”
York has 33 satellite projects it’s working on, most of them for commercial clients.
The official White House website was updated with information about some of the new administration’s priorities. One issue paper, titled “America First Foreign Policy,” lamented “our Air Force is roughly one-third smallerSouthwest than in 1991.”Trump, it says, “is committed reversing this trend, Turbine, Inc. is atopremier because he knows that our military dominance must be unquestioned.”
The Harbinger Mission for the Army helps validate York’s largely-automated process for making small, affordable satellites. It’s also a chance to work with a slate of international subcontractors and other companies, including Colorado Springs-based Braxton Technologies. The York spacecraft will integrate other companies’ radar instrument, electric propulsion system and laser communications terminal. York typically aims to be a sub-contractor on projects, allowing it to be lean because it isn’t responsible for managing logistics of an overall mission, Wallinger said. But as York’s first project to launch, the company wanted its “eyeballs” on every aspect of the Harbinger mission to learn as much as possible from working with the Army, he said.Source: Denver Business Journal

How Can Henry Ford Help Modern Manufacturing?
have made his cars too expensive for common people. This was a huge win, but was the ALAM justified in trying to collect royalties? There was a lot of controversy and corruption that led many to believe that ALAM was one of the original patent trolls.
WANT TO SUPPORT MANUFACTURING IN UTAH?
Regardless, this case opened the doors to car manufacturers and launched Ford’s model of increasing production and lowering cost. In contrast to the business model at the time, Ford paid his employees well and offered a shorter workday to grow productivity, talent, and local economies. If the masses can’t afford your product, mass producing it doesn’t sound like a great idea.
Come To The Upcoming Northern Utah Chapter Of The National Tooling And Machining Association Events!
To bolster productivity and innovation today, it may help if we shift employment to more of a Ford-based model. We also need to invest more heavily in employee training and support. Automation and IIoT are replacing lower-skill positions, but generating more work and a need for skilled employees. If companies don’t support continued education and training, it might be increasingly difficult to find qualified employees.
Doing more with less is a common phrase in industry today. It seems like everyone is doing the work of two or three people either because they feel they have to, or they feel it’s necessary for job security. However, overworked employees may not be as focused. They’re also more prone to making costly mistakes and miss the social interactions and connections that lead to creative or innovative solutions. Is working harder and longer the answer to our economic problems, or a slippery slope that is causing more harm than good? To keep jobs in America, experts have said we need to focus on production versus cost. However, I am reminded of Henry Ford. In the early 1900s, things didn’t look too great for the average American. There were big names such asVanderbilt, Rockefeller, Carnegie, and the house of Morgan pushing workers hard and paying them little. Injuries mounted as tired men worked long hours. Dr. W. David Lewis from Auburn University’s Department of History said in an interview with the History Channel, “The standard work week in the steel industry was 84 hours per week. For 84 hours of brutal labor in the steel mill, [workers were often paid] less than $10 a week.”
Don’t forget: This U.S. economy has largely been built with the innovation that came out of garages. If employees are too poor to have a garage, buy tools, or have spare time to tinker, what’s going to happen to our innovation and economy? Ford—who built his first car in a barn—saw that taking care of employees, and not cutting wages, would grow a company, and create a stronger economy that worked for everyone. By raising employee skills, companies also are contributing more talent to the U.S. work force. Source: Industry Week
Mark Zuckerberg’s Secret to Extremely Loyal Employees Will Work for Any Size Company Would you like to have seriously loyal employees? So loyal that you could trust them with information that could really hurt you?You can, and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has figured out how: Start by trusting them and being completely open. They will reward that trust. I realize this may sound Pollyanna-like, but it’s true and Facebook is the proof. Every Friday, Zuckerberg gathers Facebook employees for a no-holds-barred Q&A where he answers questions about anything and everything. All Facebook employees are welcome to attend, in person or by video stream, and those who can’t make it can watch a recorded version for a short time afterward as well. That means all 16,000 Facebook employees have access to inside information about the company’s workings and plans, new products under consideration, and anything else they want to know.
This was a time of low income taxes and little government oversight. The key to success was to get as much out of the workers as possible while reducing wages and eliminating competition to form a monopoly. The Association of Licensed Automobile Manufacturers (ALAM) was considered one of these monopolies. They patented the gasoline-powered vehicle that gave them dominion over the new industry.
How often do they leak any of this valuable information to curious investors or reporters? Almost never. It’s so rare that Recode reported this week on a leak that happened back in July 2015. An employee had told the press about Facebook’s plans for its A.I.-powered chat assistant, and Zuck was angry. The responsible employee would be found and fired, he vowed at one of the Friday Q&As.The following Friday, he reported it had been done. It’s likely that other Facebook employees helped turn the culprit in.
Fortunately, Ford didn’t listen to ALAM. Even though the organization rejected his proposal to manufacture vehicles, he built his factory and started producing cars anyway.ALAM sued and interestingly, the courts favored “the little guy” —Ford (at the time). This was important to Ford’s model, as royalties demanded by ALAM would
Now consider Apple. That company keeps its new-product plans carefully secret from its rank-and-file employees and even employs its own private security force to do things such as forcibly retrieve iPhone prototypes that have gone astray. And yet leaks about Apple products and plans (such as the rumored Apple car) are so frequent there are multiple websites devoted to tracking them. One such site, MacRumors, recently published its top 10 list of Apple-related leaks for 2016. Which of the two tech giants

2.Your trust is a precious commodity that employees will want to protect.
There are a lot of good reasons why trusting employees leads to greater employee loyalty and can help you preserve confidential information better than strict policing can. Here are just a few of them:
That’s what’s happened at Facebook. The company’s employees revere Zuckerberg, who is known to be shy and not a naturally good public speaker (as these videos show). But he comes to these Q&As and talks for more than an hour, visibly relaxed and feeling comfortable among his tribe.
1. Breaking rules is no fun if it’s too easy. I observed this years ago when my boyfriend and I boarded a bus in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. It was a cold day, and several of us had been waiting a while at the bus stop. The driver got out to take a break, but rather than leaving us in the cold he simply left the door to the bus open. He’d have no way of knowing who did or didn’t pay the fare, but everyone did anyway. Then something amazing happened. As the bus pulled away, one lady asked the driver if today was the day that a new higher fare went into effect. “Yes, it is,” he said. She got up and put some extra money into the fare box. And then every passenger on that bus, including my boyfriend (who was paying for both of us), did the same. It was a great lesson in the power of trust. Make it clear to people that you are leaving the door open
for them to do right or wrong without your supervision, and most people will respond by doing right.
Facebook employees set a high value on this opportunity to see and talk to their CEO in this extremely open setting, and they don’t like anyone threatening that. This is why many of them told Recode that they tended to police one another, and peer pressure from fellow employees was enough to make most Facebookers keep their company’s secrets. That dynamic serves Zuckerberg really well. 3. A company that runs on trust runs better than one that doesn’t. A couple of years ago, a very effective CEO told me that people would ask him why his company did so much better than its peers. The explanation was simple, he said: He trusted his employees. “Trust is the secret sauce,” is how he put it. That’s still excellent advice, and it’s continued to work for Zuckerberg, in part because he doesn’t let the occasional betrayal of that trust, such as the chat assistant leak, destroy the open and honest relationship he’s established with the vast majority of the people who work for him.Yes, there will be occasions when someone you’ve trusted will turn out not to deserve it. And you should react swiftly and harshly when that happens, just as Zuckerberg did. But keep those occasions in perspective and stay focused on the big picture of the confidence you’ve created with the people who work with you. If you can do that, you’ll wind up with employees as fiercely loyal as Facebook’s are.Source: INC. A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Montana Students Build Drone To Help Catch Poachers On the way home from his first deer hunt, Riley Scherer spotted a headless buck tossed aside like trash alongside a county road. The poached animal was “another eye opener” for the 12-year-old Medicine Crow Middle School student who, along with classmates Tucker Adkins and Hunter Nixdorf, has been working on a project that could help game wardens catch people like the poacher who killed and decapitated the roadside deer. For this year’s First Lego League Challenge, an annual robotics competition, the threesome decided to meet the theme of “animal allies” by designing a drone that was capable of searching for poachers, complete with a night-vision camera that can be moved with the remote controller. “This could have a real effect,” said Jeff Ewelt, ZooMontana director, who helped counsel the students. “It’s good stuff.” Ewelt was one of the dozens of people who attended a presentation by the middle school students in an aircraft hangar as they showed the final product to those who had helped with the project. One of those was Fish, Wildlife and Parks game warden Matt Ladd.

“They spent several hours with Matt in the evidence room” looking at confiscated weapons, vehicles and trophies from poaching cases, said Amelia Campbell, an ExxonMobil engineer who is a volunteer coach. “Jeff (Ewelt) taught us about poaching worldwide.” Ladd said the Styrofoam, wood and carbon-fiber plane the students built from a kit for about $1,000 is simple enough to be operated by a warden during poaching cases. “I anticipate, especially for spotlight patrol with a heat-sensing camera, it could be real beneficial,” Ladd said. “They’re already using them in other countries with military support, like Kenya.”

Tucker said the students were inspired by multi-rotor drones being used by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and World Wildlife Fund to spread plague vaccine in Eastern Montana to prairie dogs, a prime food source for endangered black-footed ferrets. “That’s how we came up with the idea,” he said. In African nations the poaching of rhinos and elephants for their horns and ivory fuels a multimillion-dollar illegal trade network. As poachers have become more sophisticated, conservation groups like Air Shepherd are using similar unmanned planes to stifle the killing.
In Montana, the students learned that poaching is most prevalent near Bozeman, north of Hardin and south of Harlem. In addition to singular cases, where just one animal is killed such as a deer for its antlers, FWP wardens have made cases against repeat offenders who received jail sentences of up to 20 years and thousands of dollars in fines. “It’s hard to quantify” how big Montana’s poaching problem is “because there is a lot we don’t know about,” Ladd said. “The commercialization of wildlife has contributed to that and made it more of a problem.” In addition to the market for large antlers from species like deer and elk, trophy bighorn sheep horns or the paws and bile ducts of black bears are also animal parts with commercial value. Hunter noted in his portion of the presentation that poaching also leads to broken fences and a loss of public hunter access to private land. Maybe an anti-poaching drone, or a fleet of them, could help game wardens police the problem, the students suggested. “The deterrent factor alone would be a huge benefit,” Riley said. With help from Kurt Kreiger of Model Avionics, the students equipped their plane with a small digital camera and downloaded free software that is used to program the aircraft’s 45-minute flight path.Source: billingsgazette.com

Major LCS Mission Package Decision Nears
follow-on frigates based on the LCS.
A revised decision on a contractor to proceed with a major component of the US Navy’s Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) antisubmarine warfare (ASW) mission module could be imminent, several sources said – a key step in moving ahead with two of the package’s most significant underwater sensors.
The other ASW EMM component, the MFTA, is under development by Lockheed Martin.
The decision will replace an earlier choice made in November that was vacated after a protest from a losing vendor. Three companies, L-3, Raytheon and Advanced Acoustic Concepts (AAC), are vying for the award. All have been working under contracts awarded in July 2015 to develop systems and approaches to reduce weight in the ASW escort mission module (EMM), which includes the multi-function towed array acoustic receiver (MFTA) and a variable depth sonar (VDS). The requirement was to develop systems that, along with all associated systems and handling gear, would weigh no more than 105 metric tons. Contractor teams have released few details about their ASW packages, citing proprietary information concerns. AAC’s VDS partner Thales, however, has been very active promoting their CAPTAS-4 sonar system, which was an early choice by NAVSEA in terms of performance. The system was tested on an LCS but was seen as much too heavy for the LCS package. Raytheon has declined requests to describe its VDS, which was developed by the company for the LCS program. VDS systems are effective in finding submarines hiding in thermal layers, or thermoclines, which trap sounds from passing much higher or deeper. The VDS, towed on a cable trailing from the ship, can be raised or lowered through the layers, much like a dipping sonar from a helicopter. Similarly, the VDS operates with reduced noise radiating from its own ship. Numerous foreign navies field VDS systems. The US Navy does not currently operate a VDS, although it has in the past. The VDS chosen for the mission package is also expected to outfit the A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Testing of the EMM is to begin in fiscal 2018, Navy acquisition chief Sean Stackley said, while the system is to enter initial operational capability (IOC) in fiscal 2019. A surface warfare package has been fielded on Freedom and Independence-class LCSs that have deployed to Singapore, incorporating Mark 46 30mm guns, 11-meter rigid-hull inflatable boats, an MH-60R helicopter armed with Hellfire missiles and a MQ-8B Fire Scout unmanned aerial vehicle. A Hellfire missile installation is being developed for LCS to complete the surface warfare package, and at-sea testing will be carried out. According to Stackley, the full surface warfare package should reach IOC in 2020. Progress on the mine warfare package was slowed by the Navy’s February 2016 decision to end development of the Lockheed Martin Remote Minehunting System.A revised effort to produce a full mine package in four increments is expected to reach full IOC in 2021, Stackley said in December.
