“Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before! What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store. What if Christmas...perhaps...means a little bit more!”
Dr. Seuss, How the Grinch Stole Christmas! “Want to keep Christ in Christmas? Feed the hungry, clothe the naked, forgive the guilty, welcome the unwanted, care for the ill, love your enemies, and do unto others as you would have done unto you.”
Steve Maraboli, Unapologetically You: Reflections on Life and the Human Experience “My idea of Christmas, whether old-fashioned or modern, is very simple: loving others. Come to think of it, why do we have to wait for Christmas to do that?”
Bob Hope I am a strong believer in statistics, and polls are, in fact, derived by statistics. I know that I am not alone in being astonished by the election results, as ‘The Polls’ clearly predicted a Hillary Clinton win. What happened? Regardless of whom you voted for, Trump rode a wave of anti-establishment sentiment to one of the most improbable political victories in modern US history. In fact, it is our impressive industry, manufacturing, that helped determine the outcome of the presidential race. After surprise early victories in Florida, North Carolina and Ohio, it fell to the rust belt states of the industrial Midwest to determine the result of his stunning upset. Wisconsin and Michigan, two states hit hard by a decline in manufacturing, were led by Trump. “Now it is time for Americans to bind the wounds of division,” Trump said once the race was determined. “It is time for us to become together as one united people … I pledge to every citizen of our land that I will be president for all Americans.” We are entering the most wonderful season of the year, in my opinion. Thanksgiving just passed, and what is Thanksgiving all about? In our USA, it is an annual national holiday marked by religious observances and a traditional meal including turkey. The holiday commemorates a harvest festival celebrated by the Pilgrims in 1621, and is held in the US on the fourth Thursday in November. Thanksgiving was undoubtedly a time to share food, love, families, and yes, football games, and for many, it was a time to donate food, money or time to help those less fortunate. Christmas is approaching. What is the real meaning of Christmas? Is it the gifts under the tree, the lights in the windows, the cards in the mail, turkey dinners with family and friends, snow in the yard, stockings hanging in the living room, and shouts of “Merry Christmas” to those who pass us in the streets? Is this really Christmas? For many, Christmas is the time to think of Jesus Christ as a baby in a manger. While the birth of Christ is a special and miraculous event, it isn’t the primary focus. The central truth of the Christmas story is this: the Child of Christmas is God. This is the last Rocky Mountain issue for 2016. Until next year, I wish you a wonderful Christmas, a Happy New Year, and especially during this holiday season, God Bless Our Troops! May 2017 be a year filled with kindness, acceptance of others, and a stronger US economy that facilitates manufacturing!

CaseTech Launches Redesigned Website
Ace Wire Spring & Form Co., Inc. recently celebrated and promoted Manufacturing Day 2016 for the first time on October 7th. Ace Wire Spring has been a manufacturer of Custom Compression Springs, Extension Springs, Torsion Springs and Wire Forms since 1939. Ace Wire Spring believes in supporting the local community and the education of young people in the field of manufacturing. To help students experience what manufacturing is, and in celebration of Manufacturing Day, Ace Wire Spring hosted two separate groups of students for a presentation and tour of the company’s facility. In the morning, Ace Wire Spring welcomed a group of Montour High School students and the Regional Manager for Senator Pat Toomey’s office. In the afternoon, we hosted a group of Robert Morris University students and employees from Catalyst Connection. The hope is that this event helped expand the minds of the students that visited Ace Wire Spring, and that they saw the many opportunities for a career in the manufacturing industry. Manufacturing Day is a celebration of modern manufacturing meant to inspire the next generation of manufacturers. It is a chance for students to see the diverse career options that are innovative, impactful and durable. In response to a dire need in America, MFG DAY helps with the industry’s major shortage of skilled workers. An estimated two million manufacturing jobs will go unfilled over the next decade due to companies’ inability to find talent with the required skills. Supported by a group of industry sponsors and co-producers, MFG DAY amplifies the voice of individual manufacturers and coordinates a collective chorus of manufacturers with common concerns and challenges. The rallying point for a growing mass movement, MFG DAY empowers manufacturers to come together to address their collective challenges so they can help their communities and future generations thrive. Ace Wire Spring & Form Company (www.acewirespring.com) has manufactured custom precision springs for diverse applications for 77 years. The ISO certified and ITAR registered company develops and manufactures a wide variety of compression springs, extension springs, torsion springs, and wire forms. Smith Machinery Has 5 Machines In Stock Today. You Can Still Take Advantage of Section 179! The end of year is fast approaching, and to take advantage of the Section 179 Deduction, made permanent last year, you will need to order your machine tools very soon. Typically, when you are ready to purchase your new machine tool, you find out that it will not be available to ship until months into the new year, too late for this year’s Section 179. Clark Smith, owner of Smith Machinery, says, “Today, at Smith Machinery, we have 5 CNC machines in stock, including a 5 axis machine. Please call us to see if we have the machine you need, and in time, to take advantage of the Section 179 Deduction.” Essentially, Section 179 of the IRS tax code allows businesses to deduct the full purchase price of qualifying equipment and/or software purchased or financed during the tax year. That means that if you buy (or lease) a piece of qualifying equipment, you can deduct the FULL PURCHASE PRICE from your gross income. It’s an incentive created by the U.S. government to encourage businesses to buy equipment and invest in themselves. Today, Section 179 is one of the few incentives included in any of the A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain

DRP Machine Upgrades Its Capabilities With ISO 9001: 2015 Certification Consulting Group BMSC Supports Them in Achieving This Goal dress up kits for 4 wheelers, typically made with polished aluminum. He bought his first machine, a Haas VF3 to fulfill this dream and worked weekends and evenings making products for this industry.
Hear From A Few of DRP’s Customers “DRP is fast and does great quality work! Their friendly customer service is very responsive. They are also great at offering alternative solutions for my manufacturing problems.” — Key Machine
It turns out the market wasn’t large enough, Kory explained, and it was extremely competitive. Today, he isn’t making aftermarket dress up kits, but Kory’s hobby helped him to make the decision to open his own shop. Today, DRP Machine has nearly 100 customers, with a dozen or so active at any given time, and the machine shop has grown with more CNC machines, including Haas, Mazak and Hardinge machine tools. The company also has some manual machines, and Kory does his own maintenance and repair on all of his machines. Kory says that all of DRP Machine’s customers come from referrals.
“Kory and his crew have pulled me out of so many jams, I am totally afraid to go anywhere else.” — Granite School District
Kory saw Bretta Kelly, owner of BMSC, in this magazine, and he decided to contact her. Their initial discussion was over the phone, and Kory says he immediately felt comfortable with Bretta’s style. He says, “Bretta really made me feel that she would utilize the way we do business to establish formal ISO procedures — she wasn’t going to try to change everything we were doing well today.” He added, “I contacted colleagues in the industry and inquired into the competitiveness of her proposal, and everyone said I was getting a great deal.”
“Working with DRP Machine puts my mind at ease. They always do the right thing for me. Highly Recommended.” — Salt Lake Pattern
Just last month Kory successfully certified to ISO 9001:2015. Kory credits his sister, Katrina Georgio, who he brought on board to the company 2 years ago, with helping to make the process so successful and painless.
It is not at all surprising that Kory Watkins certified to ISO 9001: 2015 with ‘0’ findings. As we often hear in our industry, many companies make the effort to achieve ISO certification because their customers are requiring it or they feel they will be able to secure business with new clients once they are certified. While all of this likely is true, Kory truly believes in the ISO process — he says the whole philosophy of ISO certification is sound. “I utilized processes from the time I launched my business, and this year, I made the decision to take my written processes to the next step with ISO certification.”
Kory says, “Once we contracted with BMSC, Bretta and her colleague Debbie Hart came out for 2 implementation visits. When they learned of our strong belief in the philosophy of ISO certification, they told us that it was refreshing to work with a team that embraced the process.” Kory added, “If you are not utilizing processes for your manufacturing business, you are swimming upstream. You can’t improve what you don’t measure.”
DRP Machine opened for business just about 13 years ago. Kory learned the skill of precision machining from several mentors he worked under for 17 years before opening his own business. He says, “During those 17 years, I learned from the very best, and I am grateful to all of the experienced, superior machinists who helped me to learn the trade.” Kory didn’t actually dream of opening his own machine shop — in fact he was happy working for his employer in a precision machine shop for many years. He had a hobby though, and he wanted to make
“Everyone talks about ISO certification as being so difficult”, Kory says. “It wasn’t for us, and we know that we will continue to improve through the ISO process.
Kory and Katrina say that BMSC is ‘top notch’. Kory elaborates, “Rather than imposing processes, they always looked at how we were doing business today, and they worked within our system. It was just very comfortable working with BMSC - with Bretta and Debbie.”

“For over two decades, NIMS has worked with companies, workforce development groups and community colleges to stand-up high-caliber apprenticeship programs across the country,” said Jim Wall, Executive Director, NIMS. “This contract gives us the unique opportunity to create more impact in our industry by expanding apprenticeships to underrepresented populations and to new companies looking to establish a sustainable talent pipeline.” The NTMA will help members establish and register apprenticeship programs with the Department of Labor utilizing our online training resource, NTMA-U. Additionally, we will assist those members with existing programs to become registered apprenticeship programs. NIMS will focus on providing companies with tools and resources to develop customized registered apprenticeship programs. These programs combine on-the-job training with job-related classroom instr uction and meet national standards for registration with the Department of Labor or State Apprenticeship Agencies. “As a stakeholder in NIMS, NTMA will be offering its members the ability to register their existing apprenticeship programs with the Department of Labor through the NTMA. This should make it easier and expedite the registration process,” said Dave Tilstone, President, NTMA. “This is an excellent opportunity for NTMA members to train their employees using NTMA-U which is already sanctioned by the Department of Labor in all 50 states. More details will become available in early January including funding for the training.” NIMS is seeking companies and industry partners that are interested in enhancing their talent pipelines through apprenticeships. In September, the U.S. House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed a reauthorization of the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act, by a vote of 405-5. The Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act, H.R. 5587, which provides federal support to state and local career and technical education (CTE) programs, now moves to the Senate for approval. The Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act not only reauthorizes the Perkins Act but strengthens the Act to provide students and employers with the flexibility needed to adapt educational and training programs to their industry by promoting national industry-recognized credentials and allowing communities to focus resources on in-demand jobs in their local geographic area. Job recruitment, training, and placement as well as advanced technical education are critical to the future of manufacturing in America. Washington should support job training initiatives and programs that support in-demand jobs such as those in the manufacturing industry. ACTION: Contact your Senators TODAY by clicking here and ask them to follow the Houses example and support efforts to reauthorize the Perkins Career and Technical Education Act.

Cloud Is Fueling Manufacturing Agility And Efficiency: Study Cloud computing is helping manufacturers drive agility into their organizations by making plant floor connectivity more affordable.
That’s the finding of the 2016 Plex State of Manufacturing Technology study based on a survey of nearly 200 manufacturing organizations. According to the authors, “Organizations are building on the connectivity of the cloud and leveraging integration that extends from mobile devices to plant floor equipment, customers to suppliers, and people to materials. These capabilities provide a new application foundation for everything from agile process design to enterprise supplychain management, innovation, and product quality.”
Visit Visit EDMNetwork.com US at Booth #2403 or call 1-888-289-3367
Among the key findings: Cloud tec hnology improves manufacturers’ ability to manage changing business needs. With the cloud, manufacturers connect the plant floor with the top floor, providing everyone access to one version of real-time data. By connecting manufacturing operations to the cloud,

CNC WEST April/May 2015 • 64 per cent of respondents better managed fluctuating customer demands • 55 per cent achieved stronger management of their global supply chain • 48 per cent found introducing new products was easier for them to manage • 98 per cent noted that connectivity to systems, machines, suppliers and customers delivers value to their business today
Consumer technology is making plant floor connectivity easy and affordable: Plant floor mobile solutions have historically been limited to expensive, proprietary, ruggedized devices. Affordable consumer mobile products, combined with cloud connectivity, make it easy for manufacturers to connect people and systems throughout the plant. As a result, • 64 per cent of respondents are using consumer tablets on the plant floor • 10 per cent have decreased the use of laptops

• Respondents noted significant growth in their deployment of iOS devices (up 9 per cent year-over-year; 70 per cent total) and Android devices (up 24 per cent year-over-year; 56 per cent total) The report revealed that manufacturers listed the shortage of skilled workers as the number one obstacle to company growth in the coming year (28 per cent of respondents). Beyond the general statistics, manufacturers cite a number of challenges in recruitment. According to the study, “Manufacturing as a career has taken a multidecade hit in North America. Both high school and college institutions have dramatically reduced the emphasis on skills education, often based on the cost of facilities and programs.” At the same time, public perception of manufacturing careers has been tarnished by memories of layoffs, as well as an inaccurate perception that manufacturing is still dangerous, dirty, repetitive work. In essence, we get the service and support from Smith Machinery locally, through their service company Neotech, and then we also have the choice for direct support from Mazak’s two local service technicians.” He continued, “We appreciate this model of double-coverage, and we always get service team members who are highly trained.” The 3 Bindrup owners recognize the importance of regularly investing in new machine tool technology for their customers.Their CNC milling capability is impressive – with 15 machining centers, including a Mazak VARIAXIS 500-5X, a fully integrated 5-axis VMC with a 2-pallet changer system. Last year RPM added their first horizontal machining center, a Mazak HCN-5000-III and, in less than a year, they added a 12 station Palletech Manufacturing Cell to this machine. The Palletech system allows RPM to have parts/fixtures ready to go, and allows for extended unattended operations. Also, just this last month, they added another Mazak VCN-430B-II. Clark Smith, owner of Smith Machinery commented, “It is always rewarding for us to see a company moving forward with higher technology machine tools and be more efficient and more competitive in this global economy. You can’t stand still for too long these days.” When your company is run by a Journeyman caliber machinist, an investment casting expert and a mold maker, and that company offers superior service, including on-time delivery, business just naturally comes to you. And so it did with IDS Machining. Owner Mark says, “About 9 years ago, we were prepared to purchase some superior new precision machine tools.” The company contacted several machine tool dealers in Utah. Mark’s wife Lynette adds, “Local support was key to our decision making, as we had already experienced the impact of purchasing machine tools that didn’t offer local service. It meant down time that we couldn’t afford.”The company that won IDS Machining’s new machine tool business was Smith Machinery. Mark says, “From the start, we saw really great service from Smith Machinery, and our Mazak mill and lathes are outstanding machine tools.” Lynette added, “We continue to evaluate several machine tools each time we are in the market for new machines, but the fact that we know the Mazak controls, coupled with the fact that we get great service, means we continue to buy machine tools from Smith Machinery.” Lynette says, “We were having our 4th Mazak machine delivered, and I was clearing out the floor and cleaning to prepare for the new installation. Mark got busy with a customer when the machine arrived, and Clark Smith, owner of Smith Machinery, was there with us for the installation. I was rushing around trying to get the floor ready and Clark picked up the floor scraper & broom to clean the area. I just couldn’t believe it. Not only was he helping (in his clean clothes) to clean the shop area, but also the fact that he was there with us for the delivery and installation was just amazing. It was outstanding.” When it came time to purchase a new EDM machine (their Sinker EDM had died), Mark and Lynette made the decision to purchase their new EDM from Smith Machinery. “We hadn’t run a Mitsubishi EDM, but we were so confident in the support we would receive from Smith Machinery that we knew our decision was sound. We’re pretty much a ‘Smith Machinery’ shop today.” A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain

and running is key to their business.
CM Manufacturing’s machine tools of choice are the Mazak line. Since 1998, every machine they have purchased is a Mazak. Ken says that when the company first started up, they purchased some entry-level machines, but given the nature of the parts they manufacture, “We needed more machine.” Today, CM Manufacturing has 5 Mazak lathes, with a machining diameter up to 16.54” and maximum machining length of 48.233”, and they have 5-axis machining capabilities with their Mazak Integrex J 400 Multi-tasking machine. In just the past year and a half, they replaced 2 of their aging Fadal machines with 2 new Mazak VCN-530C (Vertical Machining Centers) with Renishaw tool touch probing capabilities. The VCN-530C is designed to process large parts or several small work pieces in a single setup. Ken says that the new Mazak VCN-530’s offer the rigidity needed for the aerospace and defense parts his team machines. “Hands down, our Mazak VCNs offer superior speeds, feeds and accuracy, and with preventive maintenance provided by Smith Machinery, the dealer for our Mazak machines, we eliminate crashes and downtimes – a key factor in running our business as best-in-class.” Ken and his team also value the knowledgeable and service-oriented staff they get with Smith Machinery, including their Sales Engineer, Klaus Lassig, who was formerly a machine shop owner himself. Being in the somewhat remote area in Montana, superior service to keep CM Manufacturing’s machines up
Ken says that the company is seeing 25% improvement in their machining time with the Mazak VCN 530-C machines. “The biggest area for improvement in machining parts is in making them faster, thereby decreasing the single largest cost, that of labor.” He continued, “The Mazak machine tools we’ve been buying from Smith Machinery for the past years are helping us to continue to compete, particularly in times when machine shops are sacrificing margins to win business.” Long term Bourns employee Eric says, “Last year, it was time to evaluate the purchase of a new EDM machine. We had a few different builders’ older machines in house, so we had some background on what to expect, and we knew what was important to our business.”
Bourns employee Neal added, ”The cost of the EDM machine, its technical capabilities (e.g. ability to thread, and to perform a fine finish), as well as support after the sale were key factors in our decision-making.” The team found that one of the older EDM machines they owned no longer had any service from the builder. Eric says, “We know the Mitsubishi EDM well, and we know that they keep every one of their machines in their tech center – even their oldest models. When you have an issue with an older Mitsubishi, the service center can even diagnose it from their tech center, with the machine readily available.” Neal says, “Not only was the Mitsubishi EDM, the MV1200-R Advance Plus we were purchasing better from a service perspective, it was also less costly than competitive machines.” David Soares, Applications Engineer for Smith Machinery, distributors of the Mitsubishi EDM machines, says, “The team at Bourns particularly valued the ‘Digital Matrix Sensor’ (DMX) that the Mitsubishi MV1200-R EDM offered. This is the feature that checks the efficiency of sparks 2 times a second and adjusts where the sparks are occurring. The fiber optic cables assist in allowing the machine to take this feedback to the control and drives in milliseconds and make the proper adjustments. This results in less wire breakage, better surface finish, faster cutting, and more efficient use of power and wire.” Continued next page A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain

In fact, Neal and Eric found that for one job, where it used to take 160 hours (4 weeks), because they had to manually thread each hole, the new Mitsubishi reduced the time to run the job to 70 hours, and once set-up is done, most of the job is run unattended. “We have been very pleased with Smith Machinery and our Mitsubishi MV 1200-R EDM”, Neal says. “We like that the MV series features new improvements in machine construction, auto-threading, internal machine communication, power supply technology and operating costs, and that it also includes a new, non-contact Cylindrical Drive System.” Eric says, “Prior to purchasing the Mitsubishi MV1200-R, our lead time to our internal customers was about 4 weeks – and today we are turning products around in 3 days.” The fact that Smith Machinery has served the industry through Four generations of the Smith family -- supporting manufacturers and job shops in Utah, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming, -- helped Bourns select Smith Machinery for their machine tool supplier.
In 2010 when Michael and Stephen bought out Sorenson Mold’s assets for pennies on the dollar, they inherited a number of machine tools. After a few years of profitability, Michael says, “It was time to replace some of our older equipment acquired with the business.” Stephen says, “We asked around in the industry when we were making our new machine tool purchase evaluations. We knew that one thing we had to have was local sales and service. One of our machinists knew Smith Machinery well from his prior experience, and he highly recommended them. Other machine shop owners in Utah also highly recommended Smith Machinery.” For their Vertical Machining Center purchase, the team at Molding Solutions, Inc. purchased the Mazak Nexus 510C. Michael says, “The Mazak is a workhorse for us. It has been so reliable, and the service we get from Smith Machinery is outstanding.” Molding Solutions’ most recent machine tool acquisition was the MC Machinery Diamond Cut TV-500, which is a combination Mill/Drill/Tap machine. The team worked with their Smith Machinery Sales Engineer, Klaus Lassig, in the purchase. Michael says, “Klaus is a machinist by background, and he talks like a machinist. We respect his background — he isn’t a typical sales guy or a new machine tool sales guy who can’t answer your questions. During our decision making phase in the machine tool buying process, Klaus brought us into other machine shops so that we could hear directly from other owners’ about their experience with specific machines.” Klaus says, “Mold makers often use a vacuum system to extract the graphite dust from their environment, and the environment can be quite dusty through the process. We introduced Molding Solutions to a methodology that would allow them to machine ‘graphite wet’.” Stephen says, “We were very leery, but we did a test burn, and machining ‘graphite wet’ not only was 24 a much cleaner process, but the finished product was outstanding.” A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain s

Michael says, “Since we purchased our MC Machinery Diamond Cut TV-500 from Smith Machinery, we’ve been very pleased overall. The installation took 2 days before we were up and running (not months, as we have previously experienced), and the training (1 week at our site) we received from MC Machinery was just a great experience.” For more information on these superior companies, contact:

Branson-Backed Colorado Startup Shows Off Supersonic Test Plane Boom Technology Inc., based at Centennial Airport in Arapahoe County, is building its XB-1 test plane to demonstrate its technology and designs for a larger 45-passenger jet capable of flying 1,450 mph -- 2.2 times the speed of sound. The test plane was being publicly unveiled last month. It’s smaller than the planned full-sized passenger jet. Boom, a 12-employee company, says the passenger jet it’s designing will be capable of flying from London from New York City in three hours and 11 minutes, or Denver to Tokyo in just under seven hours.

At that speed, said Blake Scholl, Boom’s CEO and founder, a business traveler could fly to and from Denver and do a day’s worth of business in Japan’s capital without having to adjust to time changes and get lag. “What we’re doing isn’t just shaving off an hour here or there. We’re changing access to the planet,” Scholl said. The first flight of the XB-1 demonstration plane, known by employees as the “Baby Boom,” is planned for late 2017. Test flights below the speed of sound are planned east of the Denver metro area, which will be followed by supersonic tests in the desert near Edwards Air Force Base in Southern California, the company said. Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic announced in March it had optioned the first 10 Boom Technology passenger-jet bodies. Avionics Market Poised For Legacy Airliner Retrofit Growth With the next-generation air traffic management era commencing in North America and Europe in 2020, along with such new procedures as required navigation performance (RNP) already being implemented, the airline avionics retrofit market will grow as more legacy aircraft see extended service. In fact, that market could reach $4.7 billion worldwide by 2021, according to Glenn McDonald, manager at ICF International. “Between 2016 and 2018, most of the upgrades will be done for [Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B)] compliance—with new flight-management systems [FMS] the major focus—and modern flatpanel displays running a close second,” he says. According to IFC International research, the Boeing 757, 767, MD80, MD-90, 737 Classics and older Airbus A320s will be the prime market drivers, with work scope and cost largely dependent on aircraft age. “If built since 2000, it probably has an FMS that can be brought into ADS-B compliance with software and—some minor—hardware changes, for as little as $50,000,” McDonald notes. “For an airliner produced prior to that time, the operator would likely need a complete
FMS and display-components replacement, that could reach seven figures.” IFC’s conclusions are reflected in the business plans of avionics vendors. Shahram Askarpour, president of Innovative Support and Solutions (IS&S), reports that most of the interest involves the 757/767 models and 737 Classics, which he suggests still provide long-term value. “An avionics refresh will allow those aircraft to have increased safety, adhere to NextGen mandates and provide a high-precision navigation solution,” says Askarpour, pointing out that a steady level of interest is being generated by the sale of legacy airliners to the cargo carrier market whose operators want them to remain serviceable for another 15-20 years. Statistics compiled by Embraer indicate a sizable avionics upgrade opportunity for the ERJ 145, of which 530 remain in service. About 74% of the fleet is less than 15 years old with fewer than 30,000 cycles, putting the type under half of its structural economic life. That, says Bordais, represents a relevant potential market “for second- hand aircraft that will certainly demand services” over the next 15 years. Todd Young, vice president and general manager for customer services at Bombardier Commercial Aircraft, says that “a strong desire for avionics upgrades” from Dash 8 and Q100, Q200 and Q300 turboprop operators prompted the OEM’s decision to launch a program to retrofit those aircraft with the Universal FMS UNS 1EW and TCAS 7.1.Young notes that Bombardier is also considering ADS-B and upgraded weather radar. He attributes much of this interest to the extended service programs (ESP) Bombardier initiated for the Q100 and Q300. “These programs have the potential to add approximately 20 years of service to these aircraft,” says Young. Geophysics, led the project. His findings were this month published in Icarus, the International Journal of Solar System Studies. He told news.com.au his research points to a “good candidate site for evidence of past life ... provided you could get a rover or an astronaut down into (the craters) safely.” The two sites are well-known. The depressions are both several kilometres across and several hundred metres deep. “That roughness is what made the sites initially interesting, but is also makes them difficult to get into.” There’s another reason they’re interesting to scientists. Despite being formed by different means - an impact event is believed to have formed one crater and volcanic activity the other - they likely host all the ingredients for habitability, including heat, nutrients and water. Dr Levy explains:“This project got started when we noticed the first ‘bullseye’ depressions in the North Hellas site. The Galaxias depression had been known about for several years before, but this is the point where we started thinking that there might be many such cracked depressions on Mars that could tell us about interactions between meteor impacts, volcanic eruptions, and ice.

Scientists Dive Inside ‘Weird Looking’ Mars Funnel For The First Time
Director of planetary science at NASA, Jim Green, said the discovery was “very important”.
It was 2009 when Joseph Levy began poring over images from the surface of the Martian planet. He was fascinated by what he found.
“Our rover’s finding a lot more humidity in the air than we ever imagined. As we inject the soils, they’re moist, they’re hydrated, full of water,” he said at a highly-anticipated press conference.
There, in high-resolution photographs beamed back to Earth by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter was what Dr Levy describes as the “bullseye”. He was looking deep into the eyes of two craters - known as the Hellas depression and the Galaxias Fossae depression. Others had looked before but nobody saw what he saw. Last month, Dr Levy and a team of researchers from the University of Texas at Austin, went deep inside the craters for the first time. They produced detailed 3D measurements to determine with reasonable certainty that if life ever existed on the Red Planet, it existed here. Dr Levy, a research associate at the University of Texas Institute of A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain
“The key finding is that both depressions appear to be places where large amounts of subsurface ice were removed. The potential combination of heat, meltwater, volcanic gases, and geological weathering products makes these kinds depressions potential habitable zones for past Martian life.” In September last year, NASA announced the discovery of flowing water. Again, it was the Reconnaissance Orbiter providing the evidence.

“These discoveries are very important, but only part of the hydrological cycle on Mars that we are just now beginning to understand. What we are going to announce today is Mars is not the dry, arid planet that we thought of in the past. “Today, we are going to announce that under certain circumstances, liquid water has been found on Mars.” Dr Levy says the research is a breakthrough for “one of the most fundamental goals of exploration” - finding evidence of past or present life on another world. “Mars is a great candidate for that search because it has vast areas (much more than Earth) of ancient terrain that formed about the same time that life was beginning to leave evidence of its presence on Earth,” he said. A redesigned version of a popular self-defense tool has just been released. Known commonly as a tactical striker, it’s frequently carried in areas where most weapons are forbidden. As one expert said, “My tactical striker goes on airplanes with me and it’s even gone into the courthouse when I had to go take care of a ticket. It sits right in my front right pocket, and no one ever questions it.” According to reports, the real significance of the tactical striker is that you can take it out and carry it in your hand when you feel the need to. In other words, if you’re walking towards a group of people who are giving you an uncomfortable feeling, you obviously can’t pull out your gun, and you can’t open up your knife as if you’re prepared to fight someone. But, you can take out your striker and hold it in your hand. That way if something did happen, you would be able to quickly react and defend yourself. When asked which tactical striker he recommends, he said, “Most are fine, but you need the top of the striker to be flat because you want to hold it in the ‘ice pick’ grip, which means you put your thumb on the cap for added support. Using the ice pick grip with the thumb on the top gives you superior striking power.” Source: MilitechNews A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain

Trump called for the end of those budget caps on the campaign trail, promising he would “ask Congress to fully eliminate the defense sequester and will submit a new budget to rebuild our military,” during a September speech in Pennsylvania. House Armed Services Committee Chair Mac Thornberry (R-Tex.) “is encouraged by the president elect’s determination to rebuild America’s military, a priority that Chairman Thornberry shares,” his spokesman Claude Chafin said. So, apparently, are the markets: defense stocks spiked considerably the day after Trump’s election — with the stock value of some of the biggest defense contractors like Northrop Grumman, Raytheon and Lockheed jumping between more than 5 to 7.5 percent at the news. But there is still resistance in Congress to Trump’s plans — potentially from the more fiscally conservative Republicans and Democrats. “There is considerably more demand for defense spending than there is money to meet that demand,” House Armed Services Committee Ranking Member Adam Smith (D-Wash.) said the morning of the election. “Look at all the programs that are out there, from the B-21 (bomber) to upgrades to our submarines, upgrades to our arsenal, to rising personnel costs – add it all up and it is vastly more money than we’re going to have. How do you deal with that?” Under a Trump administration, finding a way to lift budget caps depends on whether lawmakers and the president-elect can agree on a series of tax reforms and entitlement cuts, both of which could spark intraparty conflict. For example: Trump the populist promised not to touch Social Security benefits, which are limited under House Speaker Paul Ryan’s (R-Wis.) fiscal plan. Progress is more likely on defense priorities because Republicans believe Trump is unlikely to adopt the Obama administration’s stance that every dollar of discretionary defense spending be matched by a dollar of discretionary domestic spending, which covers such programs as food stamps, community development and education programs, and transportation and infrastructure. Thornberry has frequently complained that Democrats’ insistence on parity between domestic and defense spending effectively means defense budgets are “held hostage” to non-defense spending. The GOP argues that means the military must choose between rehabilitating planes so old they are running on scraped-together “museum piece” replacement parts and a credible missile defense; or between giving over-taxed and under-equipped soldiers a reasonable number of training hours and funding operations against the Islamic State.

Republicans have sought to get around this by demanding emergency war funds – which are not subject to budget caps — to cover certain defense spending. Democrats have repeatedly decried the tactic as a sneak attack to let the GOP avoid tough budget negotiations to end sequestration. If the sequestration hurdle is cleared, Washington’s leading defense hawks are betting they start to see defense get a long-needed influx of cash. “Nobody gets a blank check,” Herson said. “But I think we get the infusion we need to restore our strength.” The first targets for an increase would be infrastructure and materiel upgrades, replacing legacy systems, and boosting the military’s recruitment program, which are already Republican priorities. Then could come some of the priorities Trump has identified — such as ramping up thew Army up to 540,000 soldiers and increasing the Navy’s fleet to 350 ships — and, Republicans hope, increasing procurement dollars for next-generation bombers and missile defense. Trump has proposed cutting non-defense spending by about one percent a year, which could make way for more military investment. A recent estimate from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities found that under Trump’s plan, by 2026, spending on non-defense programs would drop by anywhere from 29 to 37 percent. These skill shifts aren’t limited to pure-tech jobs. People in a wide range of traditionally non-technical jobs will need to be far more literate in a number of new technology areas. By 2020, around half percent of all jobs will require technology literacy in day-to-day business duties. In addition, more of these jobs will demand the ability to learn and adapt to new technologies and tools that boost productivity. Organizations will need the right digital learning tools, knowledge management systems and educational content in place to promote continuous learning and up-skilling in real-time.

Digital Transformation Demands the Workforce of Tomorrow, Today Digitization is sweeping every industry, turning established technologies and processes on their ear. Trends like cloud, mobile, Big Data, analytics and the Internet of Things (IoT) are dramatically changing how people live, work and play all over the world. To gain the benefits in efficiency, performance and insight that digitization offers, we need the people with the skills who will make it happen.Training and hiring the right people with the right skills will make the difference. There’s one little problem, however. Currently there’s a big skills gap between the number of job roles needed to make across-the-board digitization a reality, and the number of workers in the market with those skills. The IoT is one area in particular that holds significant market promise, yet lacks the workforce to make that promise a reality. As a result, public and private organizations will need to become producers of talent as well as consumers. Cisco recognized, along with other companies and academic institutions, that it will take teamwork to get the job done. Building IoT expertise into business capabilities and driving innovation across multiple industries will require a major reskilling of the existing workforce. The talent gap today is in the millions. Cybersecurity alone needs a million professionals to fill its jobs deficit. To connect infrastructure A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain

Bringing the next wave of learners up to speed isn’t something you can do overnight. Organizations must devote time and resources to hiring and developing the best talent the market has to offer, and they must also actively support impactful education that supports employees’ career paths — from higher education, through the learner’s career lifetime. In tomorrow’s digitized economy, business and cities will need to connect with their hiring base and constituents in new ways to ensure critical infrastructure and public services are sustainable, safe and scalable for growing populations. Forging strong ties between educational institutions and learners in the workforce is crucial. No organization can remain an island if cities and local talent are to reach their potential and compete in the digitized market. IoT skills in demand No one group can solve the IoT talent gap by itself. The problem can only be solved by a big-picture perspective from the economy’s biggest players, a conversation among government, technology, manufacturing and business leaders pooling their needs and insights and directing it back toward the training and learning community. We need the clear insights from leaders in IoT industries, educators, cities and government. And to get the conversation started, we launched the IoT Talent Consortium with the likes of MIT, GE Digital, Microsoft, Pearson, Disney, Rockwell, New York Academy of Sciences and IQNavigator. The goal of the IoT Talent Consortium is to disrupt the way the industry develops and acquires talent by defining new hybrid IoT skill sets and building training and skills-matching-platforms to facilitate the transition to a digital world. We are committed to building a talent exchange centered around a new skill taxonomy, defined by major organizations in every IoT sector. Each sector has its own ecosystem to tap into. By coming together, we will bring forth people trained for this new digital world. Even though it’s going to come from outside of the traditional school system, educators are integrated into the ecosystem as we seek to scale and democratize IoT and digitally focused programs for learning.
The IoT Talent Consortium wants feedback and participation on this journey. We encourage you to join.We are bringing together everyone in the industrial IoT and smart city forum to help decide what jobs are needed in this new space, where there are at many new job types being created with new types of skills we haven’t seen before. The internet and education are the great equalizers to equality and human growth. Our hope is that the IoT Talent Consortium can bring forward a new capability that allows every employer to engage in the way we have, by aggregating and leveraging shared assets, best practices and thought leadership to address our collective talent challenge. Looking ahead, there is much we can accomplish together in the IoT economy. Through this journey of talent development, we will realize the benefits to our businesses and communities promised by the Internet of Things. Source: Huffington Post, By: Jeanne Beliveau-Dunn

The in-orbit thrusters on the satellite — the last orbiter in the Navy’s five-satellite, multi-billion-dollar Mobile User Objective Systems (MUOS) satellite fleet — failed after it had been successfully launched June 24 from Cape Canaveral, Florida into a lower orbit. The thruster malfunction left the satellite out of position to do the job for which it was designed. Between Sept. 7 and Oct. 22, satellite navigators on the ground were able to use 26 timed bursts from the MUOS-5’s stability thrusters — normally meant to keep it in position, not change its orbital distance from the ground — to raise the satellite to an orbit similar to its intended spot 22,000 miles above Hawaii. MUOS-5 completed its last in a series of solar array and antenna deployments on Sunday, the Navy said, and on Thursday final testing started before placing the satellite into service. “We are very proud of the commitment our team members demonstrated,” said Capt. Joe Kan, program manager for the Navy Communications Satellite Program Office. “Working together with industry, we were able to execute an alternative propulsion method to maneuver MUOS-5 to reach a position that is operationally suitable.” Some software adjustments made on the ground to account for the small variation from MUOS-5’s planned orbit, the Navy said. Trump Promises To Bring Back Manufacturing Jobs, But Robots Won’t Let Him For Americans struggling with stagnant wages, under- or un-employment, one of Donald Trump’s most appealing campaign promises was to bring manufacturing jobs back to the U.S. Navigating the complexities of policy, tariffs and geopolitics would make that hard enough already for the president elect. But technology will make this promise nearly impossible to fulfill. Why? Because manufacturing jobs are increasingly done by robots, not people. Robotics have already helped reduce reliance on labor overseas for manufacturers in automotive, electrical and electronics industries, according to a fresh policy report from the United Nations Conference on Trade & Development. And automation does allow manufacturers to do business in the U.S. when they may have chosen to do it in Southeast Asia or somewhere else, before. But when manufacturing returns to the states, jobs aren’t coming with it in high numbers. Automation has left workers in developing nations without employment, the report notes, and the U.S. faces the same prospect. Large farms have long employed robots in the field, and major companies like Amazon and UPS rely heavily on robots for logistics and warehousing. UNCTAD’s report explained, “increased use of robots in developed countries erodes traditional labor-cost advantage of developing countries,” and is already having a global impact. It’s not just that robots ramp up productivity. They can help companies streamline all kinds of headaches affiliated with setting up shop overseas. A manufacturer outsourcing to vendors or hiring employees across borders will have to deal with the costs of managing people, design, quality, safety, customs and logistics, regulatory compliance and intellectual property from afar. “Reshoring” becomes more appealing with every technological advance in robots, since it reduces administrative and legal overhead as well as labor costs. And robots aren’t getting dumber, obviously. Advances in computer vision and artificial intelligence promise to make robots, and the software-brains inside of them, even more competitive with people, especially in manufacturing but even in physical security or hospitality. Yes, robot cashiers, assistants, security guards and flight attendants are a thing. Let’s just hope there’s always a market for “handmade” goods and human-delivered services, and perhaps a robot that can help teach former employees new work skills. Source: Manufacturing News

Recycling Metals, Conserving Resources, Since 1961 NASA Weighs Its Options On Orion For DeepSpace Exploration NASA is looking for ways to cut the cost of taking astronauts on missions past the moon after 2023 and will consider alternatives to its Orion deep-space capsule being built by Jefferson County-based Lockheed Martin Space Systems Co. The space agency published a request for information seeking input from companies, NASA research centers and others about making it financially sustainable to launch annual deep-space missions to areas around the moon on a footing for missions to Mars in the 2030s. Those are the missions for which the Orion capsule, designed at the Lockheed Martin Space Systems (LMSS) campus and manufactured around the country, and its companion rocket, are being built. The NASA request for information is asking for submissions by Dec. 23 that propose ways to make long-term production of Orion and the proposed Space Launch System (SLS) rocket more affordable, including looking for other uses and potential new partners that could help defray the expense of producing and launching Orion and SLS. SLS is to be the most powerful rocket NASA has ever built.NASA is also open to considering whether private-sector rocket and spaceship combinations being developed could accomplish NASA’s human exploration goals more sustainability than Orion, SLS and their associated
ground systems. NASA’s openness to alternatives coincides with a change in presidential administration that raises questions whether the federal government will stick to its decade-old commitment to developing Orion as NASA’s first deep-space vehicle. LMSS has been the prime contractor leading development of the Orion capsule since 2006, when the company won the contract to design the space vehicle, develop new technologies for missions beyond the moon and build the first two capsules for test flights. That contract has been estimated to ultimately be worth $11 billion. Boeing is the prime contractor for NASA’s companion Space Launch System, the massive rocket for Orion that’s borrowing engine and booster technology from NASA’s retired space shuttle program. The agency’s request for information doesn’t commit NASA changing its plans to use Orion or SLS, but it does signal that the agency is weighing all options before entering production contracts for Orion. “SLS, Orion and Exploration Ground Systems are critical for maintaining U.S. leadership in space exploration,” said William Gerstenmaier, NASA’s associate administrator for human exploration and operations, in the agency’s announcement. That may be an opening for aerospace companies such as Elon Musk’s SpaceX, Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin, Centennial-based United Launch Alliance and others. Meet Raytheon’s Drone-Destroying Microwave-Energy Weapon
There was a time when radio-controlled drones were mostly in the hands of militaries and model-aircraft hobbyists, but now anybody, including terrorists, can purchase relatively sophisticated and inexpensive unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) online. Although UAS were once feared for their spying potential, there have been several accounts of self-proclaimed Islamic State group militants in Iraq and Syria using them as flying improvised explosive devices. Finding agile, inexpensive way to destroy these threats has become a priority for the Pentagon in recent years, and in response, Raytheon has turned its high-power microwave (HPM) technology skyward. Recently, the company provided Aviation Week with footage of its deployable, ground-based Phaser knocking out two small drones during a 2013 experiment at the Army Fires Center of Excellence at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. The Defense Department cleared the video footage of the live-fire demonstration for public release on Oct. 5, but some details such as its effective range remain classified.Watch video of the demonstration here: The technology is not known to have been fielded operationally, although several initiatives are underway to transition the technology to programs of record. Raytheon lifted the veil on its Fort Still experiment during a media roundtable in Washington in June, saying the trailer-mounted device is effective against drone swarms over a wide area, has been proven to stop cars and vehicles and could even throw off missiles guided by electronics. Unlike lasers, these types of HPM weapons can disrupt or destroy electronic devices across a wide area. Fort Sill is home to the Army Field Artillery School and is leading the development of directed-energy doctrine for the service. It conducted a live-fire investigation of the Raytheon-built weapon from Sept. 30 to Oct. 3, using it to bring down a Tier I Flanker and Tier II Tempest drone.
There is no shortage of innovative ways to shoot down drones. Some companies are pitching lasers, others prefer radio-frequency disruption or, if you prefer explosions, the U.S. Army has tested Raytheon AIM-9X Sidewinder air-to-air missiles and fired course-corrected projectiles with forward-blast fragmentation warheads from a 50-mm Bushmaster cannon. But could a whole swarm be destroyed electronically with a 1-millisec. zap? The answer may lie with the Phaser system, designed and developed by Raytheon’s Albuquerque, New Mexico-based Ktech group, the A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain

The HPM weapon is mounted on a 20-ft. trailer with power provided by an internal diesel generator. The Phaser system can detect and track threats using its own radar or be cued by third-party sensors. The device’s parameters can be set to “disrupt” or “damage.” In this demonstration, the Flanker and Tempest drones were detected, tracked and cued for destruction by a three-dimensional X-band Thales/Raytheon MPQ-64 Sentinel radar and vehicle-mounted Ku-band Close Combat Tactical Radar, with Raytheon’s radio-linked Command View-Tactical system providing command and control.
Vaugh Cook’s Housing Manufacturer Rides A Domestic Boom To Strong Growth And Diversification In 1999,Vaughn Cook was building a new home. When the time came to pick out his window wells, he was frustrated by the lack of options. They were generic and looked like they could be placed in a dungeon
as easily as they could be placed in his home. “I knew there had to be something better out there. So, I looked, and when I could not find anything, I knew I had to make it myself,” Cook says. Cook had worked for years with fiberglass and understood its strength and ability to be easily molded. He went to work in his garage, exploring options for his own window wells. He came up with a mold and a design he really liked – and so did his neighbors and their friends. The more people that saw them wanted them. Five years later, Cook was able to start Rockwell, Inc., a manufacturer of window wells, grates, and ladders. The company moved from Cook’s garage to Main Street in Provo, Utah and keeps moving to larger facilities. “Today we’re in a 15,000 square feet facility. But we’re quickly outgrowing this facility as well, and I expect us to move again sooner rather than later,” says Ryan Thornock, Regional Sales Manager. Rockwell sources its fiberglass from Composites One in Illinois. “It’s a high quality, American-made product,” Thornock says. “It’s easily molded, light weight and very strong.” Rockwell’s window wells are sold throughout the United States and Canada through a team of 150-200 distributors. This large sales force necessitates the need for Rockwell to keep its product standard and fairly simple. “We cannot have hundreds of styles, makes and models,” Thornock says. “Our current design meets the egress code requirements we find throughout the country. They have to be wide enough for a fireman to get into them. They must allow people to get out in the case of a fire. They have to be something our distributors are proud to sell and our home builders are proud to use. We do not make custom products. Our success is based on repetition: making the same high quality product that works all over the United States and Canada.” Challenges: The housing market. Rockwell started in 2004 in the midst of a housing boom.Within three years, Rockwell faced selling a product in the midst of the housing crisis. “It was not a fun time,” Cook says. “We had to keep afloat. But it gave us a chance to look at how to manage labor and materials efficiently. We had to return to the basics.” Opportunities: Strong economy. “This steady growth has given us an opportunity to be innovative. We have the ability now to look around and see what other niche markets we can serve. We had to introduce

Boom Tec hnologies expects to Fax: (801) 978-0623 www.westernstatesmetals.com star t subsonic flight tests of its XB-1 supersonic demonstrator in late 2017. The engineering design was unveiled at the company’s Centennial airport facility in Denver, Colorado, on November 15. Toll-Free: (800) 378-0562 Local: (801) 978-0562
Dubbed “Baby Boom,” the delta wing aircraft is a one-third scale demonstrator for a small supersonic airliner which Boom aims to certificate for commercial service by 2023. The XB-1 is 68 ft. long and powered by three 3,500 lb. thrust, non-afterburning General Electric J85-21 engines which are configured with specially developed variable geometry inlets and exhaust systems. Designed to operate at Mach 2.2, and with a range of more than 1,000 nm, the 17 ft. span XB-1 is intended to pave the way for the follow-on development of a full-scale supersonic trijet transport seating 45 passengers in standard configuration, and up to 55 seats in a higher-density layout. Constructed primarily of lightweight composites, the XB-1 is configured with a two-crew cockpit, a chined A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain

Unlike a new generation of supersonic business jets and a NASA X-plane in development, the small airliner is neither a low-boom or lower Mach number design. Instead, the delta-winged Boom design is intended to rely on a 10% higher speed than that of Concorde to achieve high utilization and shorter sector times on 4,500 nm. routes, most of which will be flown over water. If successful, Boom’s airliner will fill a gap in the air transport industry that has been unfilled since British Airways retired the final Concorde in 2003. The initial design of the full-scale aircraft has meanwhile settled with an overall length of 170 ft. and span of 60 ft. and differs in several key areas from the XB-1. The airliner variant will be configured with podded engines mounted close inboard and flush with the underside of the delta wing, and will feature a dedicated inlet for the tail-mounted engine with intakes mounted either side of the fuselage. The XB-1, on the other hand, has only two fighter-style rectangular supersonic inlets which are mounted below the wings alongside the fuselage. These inlets also feed the buried inlet for the tail engine via bifurcated ducts. Industry Awaits Details On Trump Defense Spending Plan While many believe the Trump administration and Republican-controlled Congress will stop sequestration and boost defense spending, the details of a long-term strategy remain to be seen. “It’s incumbent on the administration and the Department of Defense to come up with a sensible plan that can be executed,” said Jack Deschauer, a partner at lobbying firm Squire Patton Boggs. The PMI Services flash reading for October came in above the September reading, at 54.8 in October versus 51.9 in September. Note that this was the strongest reading of 2016. According to the Services PMI reading, business activity in the services and non-manufacturing areas increased at a robust and accelerated pace in October. New order volumes rose at the quickest rate so far in 2016 and was accompanied by the strongest business optimism since August 2015. New order growth was shown to have accelerated for the first time in three months. Price pressure was also seen here, which is inflationary. Input price inflation was shown to be the fastest since May, and service providers indicated that they saw a moderate rise in their average prices to its strongest since November 2015. IHS Market was cautious on the employment portion of its services report. It said of October: Despite stronger business activity growth, service providers indicated that cautious staff hiring patterns persisted in October. Measured overall, job creation picked up only slightly from the three-and-a-half year low recorded in September. While some firms sought to boost their payroll numbers in response to rising workloads, there were also reports that efforts to reduce costs had led to the non-replacement of voluntary leavers. The PMI Manufacturing flash reading rose unexpectedly to 53.2 in October. The September reading was 51.4, and Bloomberg had its consensus estimate at 51.2 for this month’s report, with an Econoday range of 50.9 to 51.7. IHS Markit’s PMI Manufacturing flash index showed the strongest rate of growth since October of 2015. There was a strength in new orders and in the order backlog. Output was at a year high, and input costs were nearly at a two-year high. Prices realized for sales were up for the first time in three months. Inventories also posted their first gain of 2016.
Stronger Manufacturing and Services Data Not Looking as Strong for Jobs
All in all, what matters is that output and new order growth hit oneyear peaks, and manufacturers saw the fastest expansion of input buying since June 2015.
It has been said for longer than any of us care to remember, but the United States is now a post-manufacturing economy. Maybe we aren’t all working in offices or delivering goods or working in bars and restaurants, but the reality is that more and more manufacturing economies have lower wages than the United States. The week of October 28 brought two fresh reads on manufacturing and the non-manufacturing sector, which were stronger than expected — but not in the underlying employment data.
Similar to the services report, manufacturing weakness was also noted. Its report said: Some firms commented on increased capacity pressures at their plants, in part reflecting subdued job hiring in recent months. Latest data signalled only a moderate rise in payroll numbers, and the rate of expansion was weaker than in September.
IHS Markit delivered the flash index readings on both sectors. Services have been covered first, but the manufacturing data needs to be considered here as well. What also should be considered is that this is October data, meaning it was not during the third quarter, when . We would also point out that the stronger economic reports were countered.
What we have seen is a surprise to the upside in manufacturing and in non-manufacturing activity. This was for October, which might on a post-GDP basis lead to the economy having snapped back after weak data late in the summer and after the post-Brexit shock. Source: Wall Street Journal

Pentagon Seeks Funds For New Ad Campaign To Attract Recruits In a new move to attract a broader pool of military recruits, the Pentagon is asking to spend $140 million over the next five years to create an advertising campaign for the defense department.
Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced the plan as part of a wider effort to beef up recruiting and the ROTC program in order to attract top talent from around the country. The individual military services have routinely done the bulk of the advertising, flooding the airwaves with familiar slogans for the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps. But Carter said the department wants to tout the idea of military service as a whole. And he said he wants to make more Americans familiar with the military and the benefits that come with service, including professional training and money for higher education. The advertising funding requires congressional approval. Carter’s announcement came during a speech at City College of New York, where he told students that “one opportunity some of you may not have considered, is serving our country by serving in the military.” He said military service is a place where they can maximize their talents and skills while defending the country. In addition to more advertising, Carter said he wants to review enlistment standards, including fitness, tattoos, swimming United States. tests, prior Pratt, Rolls-Royce Realign marijuana use and other benchmarks that mayTies limit otherwise good recruits from trying to join. An Interview With Maddie Dahl Utah, which I find extremely fulfilling. When and how was the NUNTMA formed? Maddie: Our association was founded just about 5 years ago, in 2011. Gail Houser was theWestern Regional Manager for the NTMA at the time, and he approached Matt Wardle, owner of JD Machine in Odgen, Utah, to help him form the new association. Early on, Matt and Gail enlisted 2 new regular members (regular members are machine shops), and the first 2 shops to come on board with JD Machine were May Foundry and Clean Machine. The NTMA also has associate members, who are companies that sell to machine shops. NewWest was the original associate member. The NUNTMA exists to help members achieve profitable growth and business success through advice, camaraderie, education, networking, information, advocacy, collaboration and services. The NUNTMA places workforce development among their top priorities, which lead them to applying for and receiving grant funding to develop machinist apprenticeships in each one of their member’s shops. Chapter Executive for the Northern Utah chapter of the National Tooling and Machining Association (NTMA). The local chapter Maddie supports uses the acronym ‘NUNTMA’. NTMA Background: As the national representative of the precision custom manufacturing industry, the National Tooling and Machining Association (NTMA) exists to tell this story with a powerful voice. Backed by nearly 1,300 members, representing more than $30 billion in sales, the clout we collectively wield is considerable. We also serve as a valuable national resource for our members, helping them grow profitably. While many of the members are privately owned independent businesses, the products and services they provide are absolutely vital to the nation’s economy. Members’ products serve industries from aerospace to electronics to nuclear power. NTMA is organized into nearly 50 local chapters throughout the country. Question:What is your background and how did it prepare you for this position? (Education plus involvement in manufacturing) I was fortunate enough to grow up in manufacturing. I have done odd jobs at the family business as I was growing up, and my Dad offered me an internship when I completed my master’s degree in Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences. I decided I would give it a try, and it has grown into my dream job. He lets me volunteer a portion of my time to the NUNTMA and Machine A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain

How large is the organization today? Maddie: Today, we have 22 member companies (with a new one to join shortly) and we have 14 associate members. I understand that one of NUNTMA’s most significant accomplishments in its short history is its apprenticeship program.Tell me a little about how the program got started. Maddie: There has been plenty of anecdotal evidence that the demand for skilled hi-tech machinists continues to outstrip the supply of workers with these skills. The NUNTMA established the Machine Utah campaign, a program for apprentices who can earn pay and benefits while simultaneously completing their education and on-the-job training. This program appears to confirm that many manufacturers, community colleges, and federal, state and local governments will do well to help prepare workers with these skills. The campaign has had a coordinator both years, last year was Helen McNally, and I have spearheaded it this year. Across the country job demand for skilled CNC machinists is evident just from a quick glance at some of the most widely used online job search sites. On any given day, for example, the SimplyHired.com has more than 3,300 listings for CNC machinist jobs available across the country. CareerBuilder.com lists more than 400, and Monster.com lists more than 1,000. In June of last year, Machine Utah funding was granted through GOED (Governor’s Office of Economic Development) as part of their UCAP (Utah Cluster Acceleration Partnership) program in the sum of $150,000. It is through this grant that we have been able to launch a marketing campaign to raise awareness of our program. Our marketing program included building a website (machineutah.org), email blasts, Facebook and Twitter, Billboards and Transit advertisement campaigns, and Open Houses sponsored by some of our member companies.

Please RSVP to Maddie Dahl, NUNTMA Chapter Executive, Ph: 801.337.7097, Email: chapterexec@nuntma.org Grant Writing is not only arduous but also the likelihood for success is often low, particularly for an organization without a long track record. A grant writer’s “success rate” depends on both the grant writer’s professional skills and the organization’s readiness to submit the proposals in the first place. How did the NUNTMA go about submitting requests for grants? With workforce being such an issue in the progression of the businesses in our local chapter, the board decided that an apprenticeship program would be an appropriate solution. I hadn’t had any experience in grant writing, but had an amazing mentor at the Ogden-Weber Applied Technology College, Monica Schwenk. We were very fortunate to be funded on our first attempt, and when we applied for the second year, we received funding then as well. How many apprentices are in the program today and how many participating machine shops are there? Maddie: Today, we have 9 participating machine shops, including Brendell Mfg., Central Valley Machine, Cutting Edge Precision, Leanworks, JD Machine, Paramount, Petersen Inc., Pinnacle Precision and S&S Machine. MSC Industrial supply is a key partner in our growth, they assist us in promoting the apprenticeship program to shops who may be interested.
Each participating machine shop must submit an application to the Department of Labor (DoL), and to date, 4 companies have been approved. Today, we have 7 apprentices placed, with a goal of 25 within the next months. Starting an apprenticeship program that is sanctioned is an enormous endeavor. Were there other organizations that you engaged with?
Maddie: Absolutely. We formed partnerships with Community and Government organizations, including the Department of Labor (DoL) and the Dept. of Work Force Services (DWS). We also partnered with several educational entities such as Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) and many within the Utah College of Applied Technology (UCAT) including Bridgerland, Davis, Mountainlands, and Ogden-Weber. How does your apprenticeship program align with STEM? Maddie: The disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and math—subjects are collectively known as STEM. Apprentices in our industry must be strong in all of the disciplines associated with STEM, and so I would say that our initiative is directly aligned with it. We are more narrowed in our focus in that we are not looking at all disciplines where STEM education is deemed critical, we are targeted our apprenticeship program to the field of precision machining. That being said, STEM outreach is an integral part of our overall marketing program, and we have presented to hundreds of high school students, giving them the opportunity to hear about the machining industry and future possibilities for job potential. We also attended the STEM Fest, where Machine Utah marketed our program to thousands of attendees. What is next for NUNTMA and Machine Utah? The NUNTMA continues to be strong organization, holding 9 chapter meetings per year. These meetings are centered on any issues that may be arising within shops, offering resources and a network to assist them.Workforce is a constant struggle for many shops, so Machine Utah gives us a purpose and a way to give back to the community, the industry, and grow the next generation of manufacturers. There are so many opportunities to support manufacturing in Utah. Meet Boeing’s Latest Next-Gen Fighter Concept Boeing is out with new concept art for the U.S. Air Force’s next-generation fighter jet, a sleek, tail-less design featuring conformal engine inlets and what looks like a manned cockpit. The latest image, provided to Aviation Week, looks more like a fighter-bomber than a pure fighter. The tail-less airframe, thin swept wings and conformal shaping suggest a stealthy, penetrating aircraft that may be able to fly supersonic. The silhouette of a pilot inside the cockpit indicates Boeing is banking on the Air Force sticking with at least an optionally manned platform for the future capability. Boeing’s new vision comes as the Air Force begins to solidify a plan for the next generation of air superiority, alternatively called “sixth-generation fighter,” “next-generation air dominance,” F-X,” and most recently “Penetrating Counterair” (PCA). The service just kicked off an Air Force Scientific Advisory Board (AFSAB) study that will begin identifying key capabilities needed to fight in the battlefield of 2030 ahead of a formal analysis of alternatives (AoA) for PCA. The Air Force’s “Air Superiority 2030” initiative identified a hybrid PCA capability as key to ensuring air superiority in future denied battlespaces characterized by sophisticated air defense systems and counterair technologies. But so far, the Air Force has only described PCA in relatively broad terms.
Spindles for All Aerospace Applications Aluminum, Composite & Titanium Machining
GMN USA has it all!
We do know that PCA will be a “family-of-systems,” and will likely include some kind of next-generation stealth fighter to operate alongside and eventually replace Lockheed Martin’s F-22s and F-35s. It may also incorporate the new arsenal plane concept, where multiple sensor-shooter aircraft direct fire from an aerial bomb truck crammed with munitions. The AFSAB study, announced Oct. 27, will begin to define the key operational characteristics of a PCA capability. The pre-AoA effort will examine likely adversaries, identify and assess relevant technologies, and determine the timelines and investments needed to mature them. The study aims to provide a technology roadmap to support developing and fielding of an initial PCA capability in 2030.

GE Tests 35% Additive Manufactured Turboprop Engine GE Aviation has completed testing a 35% additive manufactured demonstrator engine to validate 12 additive parts in its Advanced Turboprop (ATP) engine, which will power the new Cessna Denali single-engine turboprop aircraft. Additive components reduce the ATP’s weight by 5% while contributing a 1% improvement in specific fuel consumption (SFC).
An additive CT7 technology demonstrator engine dubbed the “a-CT7” was designed, built, and tested in 18 months, reducing more than 900 conventionally manufactured parts to 16 additive manufactured parts. The ATP engine architecture is derived from the in-service CT7 engine, allowing for additive part commonality between the two engine programs. The ATP will include more printed components than any production engine in aviation history with 35% of the turboprop’s parts built via additive manufacturing. 855 conventionally manufactured parts will be reduced to 12 additive parts on the ATP, including: sumps, bearing housings, frames, exhaust case, combustor liner, heat exchangers and stationary flowpath components. In July, GE Aviation introduced into airline service its first additive jet engine component – complex fuel nozzle interiors – with the LEAP engine. The LEAP engine is the new, best-selling engine from CFM International, a 50/50 joint company of GE and Safran Aircraft Engines of France. The same team of eight engineers responsible for designing the LEAP fuel nozzle interiors led the design effort for the 16 additive parts tested in the a-CT7. In the coming months, GE will run a second a-CT7 test with even more additive parts to expand the technology to additional structures and assemblies. GE expects to run its first full ATP engine test by the end of 2017 in Europe. Additive manufacturing (3D printing) involves taking digital designs from computer aided design (CAD) software, and laying horizontal cross-sections to manufacture the part. Additive components are typically lighter and more durable than traditionally-manufactured parts because they require less welding and machining. Additive manufacturing allows GE to build parts at lower weight with better performance and durability. source: Aerospace Manufacturing & Design A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain RockyMtnSaw-Flyer.indd 1

Car Innovator Henrik Fisker Boasts New Battery Will Help Take On Tesla Electric car innovator Henrik Fisker said his team is moving toward powering vehicles with graphene supercapacitors, rather than conventional lithium-ion batteries. Fisker called the technology the “next big step” in charging electric cars. “Our battery technology is so much better than anything out there,” Fisker told Business Insider. “Our battery technology is the first battery technology that has taken the major leap.” Knowledge of graphene has been around for some time, but its use is limited due to the high cost of production. Fisker Nanotech is patenting a machine that could produce as much as 1,000 kilograms of graphene at a cost of just 10 cents a kilogram, according to the report. Bloomberg reported earlier this month that Fisker was building a new electric car under his new banner, Fisker Inc., with a range exceeding 400 miles. Currently, the high-end Tesla Model S has the longest range of commercially-produced electric cars, getting 315 miles on a single charge. Fisker is best known as the designer behind iconic autos such as the BMW Z8 and the Aston Martin DB9, but his first attempt at an electric vehicle was a disaster. back in 2012. The $100,000 vehicle had battery problems that forced the car maker to recall more than 600 Karmas. In addition, some Karmas burst into flames due to an issue with an engine component. Fisker Automotive went bankrupt in 2013. Fisker will reveal his new electric car in late 2017 and claimed the consumer-friendly electric car would be in “an even lower cost segment of both the [Chevy] Bolt and the Model 3.” “We will have the lowest-cost electric vehicle in the world,” Fisker told Business Insider. Fisker will face stiff competition from the likes of Tesla, which unveiled its lower-priced Model 3 earlier this year.Tesla received more than 400,000 deposits, even though the $35,000 car will not hit mass-production until 2018. Tesla is also offering up competition in the battery sector. The company is building what it calls the Gigafactory to produce low cost batteries for its electric cars. If everything goes as scheduled by 2020, the factory will produce 35 gigawatt-hours of battery capacity each year, more than the entire world’s lithium ion battery production in 2013, according to The Verge. Chevrolet is set to debut its electric, consumer-friendly Bolt at the end of this year, with a competitive range of 238 miles. But Fisker isn’t concerned. “I think it’s pretty clear when you look at the market, when you look at the premium market, there’s really only one company that is out there,” he said, “and it’s Tesla.” Source: Denver Business Journal
