“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.” — Steve Jobs

Do you love what you are doing in your career? In my long and varied career, I have operated in various roles: a computer programmer, a data center operations manager, a sales person/ marketeer for such tech companies as Motorola, AT&T and Intel, and then publisher/owner of A2Z Manufacturing magazines. Hands down, my passion, my favorite job ever is the one I am doing today. In fact, I’ve been doing it for 14 years now. Finding a job you love is age-old advice. Confucius probably has the best longstanding quote about “do what you love.” His words, “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life,” have been repeated throughout history. Research shows that great work is produced when people focus on doing something others love. ‘The Great Work Study’ showed that 88% of projects that earned awards began with an employee asking, “What difference could I make that other people would love?” The study found that all cases of work being studied shared a single intention—the work was focused on making a difference that someone else would love, instead of the person performing the work. They were focused on the recipient of their work—their customer, their colleague who depends on them, their leader who trusts in them, the community who expects their support, or others who benefit from their work. Researchers Wrzesniewski and Dutton followed a group of hospital cleaners, and found that some of the cleaners experienced their work as a job — as something they did solely for the paycheck — and described it as boring and meaningless. But another group perceived the same work as a calling — and experienced the hours they spent at work as engaging and meaningful. This second group of hospital cleaners did things differently from the first group. They engaged in more interactions with nurses, patients, and visitors, taking it upon themselves to make everyone they came in contact with feel better. Generally, they saw their work in its broader context: They were not merely cleaning the wards and removing the trash, but were contributing to the health of patients and the smooth functioning of the hospital. In an article ‘15 Revealing Signs You Genuinely Love What You Do’ by Jeff Haden, there are some key indicators I wanted to call out because they particularly rang true to me: • You don’t talk about other people; you talk about the cool things other people are doing. “I hear Alex just invested in a startup. What are they working on?” “I can’t believe Sonny and Alyssa won their business back; I’d love to know how they did it.” “Conrad developed a new sales channel. Let’s ask him how we can best leverage that.” When you love your work, you don’t gossip about the personal failings of others. You talk about their successes, because you’re happy for them (which is also also a sign you’re happy with yourself.)

Revolution MachineTools is especially excited with this announcement because of the remarkable speed the Pipe Spool Master offers. Complex, precision bevels can now be completed by one operator, usually in 15 minutes or so depending on the size and scope of the material. Handling of long and cumbersome pipe and tube can be a challenge. The machine does not spin the pipe, but rather clamps and centers the material, while a facing head spins and approaches the material while inside the machine. With this machine design, you can quickly load your pipe without the need of using a crane or forklift to push or pull the pipe into position. All while taking up minimal floor space and overhead. At Revolution Machine Tools we consistently look for ways for our customers to improve their processes and therefore, their bottom line. Our success begins with your success! For more information, call (385) 3550342 or visit rmtus.com

ULA picks Aerojet Rocketdyne engine Rocket company United Launch Alliance will stick with an Aerojet Rocketdyne engine for the upper stage of ULA’s new Vulcan rocket.

GMA GARNET GROUP when your abrasive matters!

Centennial-based ULA announced that the Aerojet Rocketdyne RL10 engine, which has powered the company’s rocket upper stages for years, will remain the upper-stage engine of choice after Vulcan starts flying in 2020. ULA reach a long-term agreement with Sacramento, California-based Aerojet Rocketdyne to supply RL10s “for the next decade” and develop a new variation of the RL-10 for ULA to use as well, the company said.

The new version of the upper-stage engine, dubbed the RL10C-X, will increase the use of additive manufacturing — an advanced form of 3-D printing using metals — and introduce other advanced technologies to improve the engine's quality, reliability, affordability and performance, ULA said. The contract is a significant win for Aerojet Rocketdyne. The company has been developing a new booster-stage engine, called AR-1, it hopes ULA will buy and use to power Vulcan rockets off the launch pad.

The Four Pillars Of Modernization: People, Processes, Technology, And Customers. This Approach Is Working For The Jaguar Precision Machine (JPM) Team, And The Company Continues To Grow By >20% Year Over Year. People — “Interns are our secret weapon”, says JPM owner Dan Schatzman.Veteran-owned JPM continues to hire engineering students who intern with the company during the years of their undergraduate studies. In late May, I interviewed the JPM team at their 15,000 square foot facility in Albuquerque, NM. On this day, a professor from Navajo Technical University and 8 of his students came to tour JPM in order to evaluate options to intern with the precision machine shop for the summer. By the end of the tour, JPM had secured one engineering intern with a possibility for a 2nd. Within the team of ~ 20, today JPM has 4 interns, including 2 engineering students and a business student from UNM, and 1 welding student from CNM. Also, on the day I was at JPM, it was Operation Manager Seth Billie’s birthday. As is standard operating procedure at JPM, a pizza party celebration was offered to all for lunch. Machinists at JPM aren’t button pushers; in fact every machinist is well skilled in both machining and programming. The interns (Generation Z’ers) say that what makes JPM a ‘great place to work’ includes: flexibility in the working environment, the ability to wear many hats and to increase their skill sets and the company’s willingness to embrace and invest in new technology. JPM donates ~$10,000 in machine work to the UNM racecar competition each year. Dan says that UNM has a budget of about $85,000 to build their racecar, and they are competing against universities with budgets in the millions. Nearly every year UNM places in the Top 5 in the competition. Processes — The company has long been certified to ISO 9001: 2008 and they recently upgraded to ISO 9001: 2015. Business planning is an integral process at JPM, and all JPM team leaders participate in reviewing and updating the business plan on a quarterly basis. Continuous learning is yet another key factor in JPM’s success. Controller Linnette Richards says, “We invest in the latest business, machine, and software technology. In order to maximize our use of it, we invest in continuous training of our team.” Technology — When Dan purchased the company in 2014; the management team immediately began to replace older machines with newer technology. Today the company purchases the latest in machines, tooling, software and interfaces. All machines are equipped with 2 large screen displays. The company recently partnered with another company to bring additive manufacturing to JPM’s customers. In the last two years, the company’s newest mills and lathes have been Haas machine tools, including the Haas UMC 750, a universal machining center for 3+2 machining and simultaneous 5-axis machining. One of JPM’s machinists commented, “We picked the Haas machines due to their price points and their outstanding service.” He continued, “Two outstanding feature options we get with our Haas machines are the tool probing and the spindle probing. While these options are available with other machines,

they don’t exist with machines in this price point.” “Also”, he continued, “MMT,A Division of Productivity, is the dealer for our Haas machines. When we need service, we call MMT and they are here to support us same day or next day.” DannyWhite, Sales Engineer for MMT supporting customers in New Mexico and the Colorado Western Slope, says, “Sales is about getting the right machine for the customer’s needs. After that it is our top notch service, applications, parts and tooling team that keeps our customers coming back to MMT when making future decisions.” Dan and Seth agree that the JPM team members all value Danny’s knowledge of the machining industry. Seth says, “Prior to becoming a sales person, Danny was a service engineer. It is invaluable having a sales person with Danny’s strong expertise.” He added, “Danny isn’t just knowledgeable; we count on him and he always takes care of us.” JPM Purchasing Manager Michelle Summers adds that Danny and the MMT team have so successfully earned their trust that the company recently purchased other products from MMT, including a Marvel saw and the Pro Vend machine tool vending machine. Customers — JPM’s customer base is highly technical, with the majority in the Aerospace, Defense and Space industries. Kenton Losinski, Sales Engineer for the company, says, “Our customers require partners/suppliers that have the ability to machine exotic alloys, including Hasteloy, Inconel andTitanium. We are known for our ability to machine parts with difficult geometries, and above all, we recognize the need to meet or exceed our customers’ Quality and On-Time metrics.” JPM is an outstanding precision machine shop that offers a wealth of engineering talent. To find out how they can support your precision product needs, contact them at (505) 242-6545 or visit www.JaguarPM.com Since 1968, Productivity, Inc. has offered superior products to the manufacturing industry. Through its acquisition of MMT, the company supports customers in NM, CO, UT, MT,WY, MT and ID. Contact them at (800) 947-8665 or visit www.mmtproductivity.com A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

NASA’s Lockheed-Built Lander Poised For Long-Awaited Trip To Mars NASA’s next space probe headed to Mars — a lander built in Jefferson County and launched on a Colorado rocket — may soon start its journey after two years of waiting. NASA or ig inally scheduled the $828.8 million mission to blast off two years ago. A problem with a seismic instrument, built by France’s Centre National d’Études Spatiales (CNES), prompted NASA to postpone launching InSight until the next time Mars’s orbit aligned with earth’s for an optimal flight. The InSight spacecraft and launch teams are ready. However, Air Force forecasts show an 80 percent chance of coastal fog heavy enough to scrub the pre-dawn launch due to poor visibility. If fog forces more waiting, there are other launch times that will work to launch InSight prior to June 6. The Mars InSight lander, formally called the Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations Geodesy and HeatTransport, is designed to land and then drill nearly 16 feet beneath the Martian surface and monitor the subsurface temperature. Other instruments will take surface seismic readings. The mission is expected to yield new information about the red planet’s interior — such as the composition of its core — and its geological processes. Lockheed Martin Space led construction on the multi-national mission. The company, which has been a key player on seven previous NASA Mars missions, won the $425 million contract to build InSight in 2012. The probe is 8.5 feet in diameter and weighs about 400 pounds. With its heat shield and entry vehicle enveloping it, the overall Insight payload resembles the size of a very small car. InSight will blast off atop an AtlasV rocket built by Centennial-based United Launch Alliance, which has launched all NASA planetary probes since 2006. Around 11 a.m. Nov. 26, if all goes according to plan, InSight will descend through Mars’ atmosphere at nearly 12,000 miles per hour. A heat shield will ward off most of the friction and slow InSight, inside its protective aeroshell, enough for parachutes to deploy and slow the craft further. Close to Mars’s surface, the parachutes release InSight and thrusters fire to provide it a gentle five-mile-per-hour landing in the planet’s western Elysium Planitia region. U.S. and European space agencies built the scientific instruments that Lockheed Martin Space integrated into the InSight lander. In a 2015 file photo, NASA’s Mars-bound InSight spacecraft is loaded into a C-17 cargo aircraft at Buckley Air Force Base that was bound for Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. The spacecraft, built by Lockheed Martin Space Systems, was scheduled for launch that year but was delayed and is now slated to take off May 5, 2018. Since the last time it was shipped to California for its 2016 launch, French engineers and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory redesigned a problematic vacuum seal on the lander’s key seismic instrument. The delay and repair added $153.8 million to the original cost of the mission, according to NASA.

(303) 466-3777 foothillsmachinery.com

InSight’s replacement seismic instr ument was installed, integrated and tested extensively at Lockheed’s campus in Colorado before sending the lander back to California in February. A team of 25 Lockheed Martin Space employees have been with the lander there for three months, and another 25 traveled there this week for InSight’s launch. Getting the spacecraft on its way to Mars will be a big deal for the company. About 150 people worked on the probe at the height of assembly activity, and well over 1,000 employees there will have a hand in the mission over the six years it has been in development, Spath said.

InSight will be the first interplanetary probe to take off from Vandenberg Air Force Base. A2Z_Met_5-Axis-UYTP-Ad.indd 1

3/27/2017 10:03:44 AM

In 2016, Lockheed Martin Space teams weren’t familiar with theWest Coast launch site. And then there was the problem instrument and the possibility of integrating the new one at the launch site to keep InSight on schedule. Once InSight leaves earth, a team from Lockheed’sWaterton campus will monitor and spacecraft from Colorado and make any adjustments needed for its flight. The same crew will oversee InSight’s flight down through the Martian atmosphere and its time on Mars soil, too. It’s a “cradle-to-grave” job to make sure InSight is operating healthily, Spath said. That’s designed to be 728 earth days on the red planet, but will continue until NASA decides InSight’s job is done. It will be the seventh space probe managed from the company’s spacecraft operation’s center. Source: By Greg Avery – Reporter, Denver Business Journal A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Why First Solar Is Doubling Down On U.S. Manufacturing

We have created an interactive dashboard analysis showing our expectations for First Solar over 2018. You can modify the key drivers to arrive at your own forecasts and valuation for the company. While First Solar has typically done a bulk of its manufacturing in Asia, there appear to be multiple advantages in moving capacity towards the U.S. in the current environment. Firstly, the recent overhaul of the U.S. tax code has boosted the economic rationale for producing in the country. Moreover, labor accounts for a smaller portion of the manufacturing costs of the new Series 6 modules, reducing the effective cost savings of manufacturing in countries such as Malaysia or Vietnam.

First Solar published its Q1 2018 results last month, beating market expectations on revenues and earnings, driven by solar project sales in markets including India, Japan, and the U.S. First Solar has been seeing strong demand for its Series 6 modules, for which it recently started commercial shipments. The company also continues to witness tailwinds from the imposition of import duties on silicon-based panels and cells, to which its Cd-Te based products are not subject.Year to date, the company booked a total of 3.3 GW of capacity, with its shipment backlog standing at about 10.6 GW (including both systems and third-party module).

Additionally, a bulk of First Solar’s demand continues to come from North America, meaning that it could cut logistics costs by producing in the U.S.

Considering the strong bookings and demand for the new Series 6 panels, the company announced that it would be building a new module manufacturing facility with 1.2 gigawatts of capacity next to its current manufacturing operations in Ohio. This would help the company increase its planned U.S. Series 6 capacity to 1.8 GW with its total planned Series 6 capacity standing at 6.6 GW.

Close to three-quarters of the company’s potential booking opportunities come from the North American market. Source: Forbes

citizens rather than implementing solutions for bee die-off, inspiration is inspiration regardless the source.

Bees are losing ground to colony collapse disorder, a worldwide dieoff theoretically attributed to a variety of issues: pollution, pesticides, pathogens, fungicides, climate change, genetically modified crops, parasitic insects, malnutrition and more.

On March 8, 2018, Walmart applied for a patent (not yet approved) with the U.S. Patent Office for drone pollinators designed to fly from plant to plant, collecting pollen from one and depositing it on the next. Another drone would hover along behind to monitor the accuracy of the first one — sort of a supervisor drone.

Regardless the cause, the effect presents a dire problem for agriculture. Reproduction of many crops including apples, almonds, blueberries, peaches and nuts depends on pollinators. Several bee species have already made the sad leap from productive hives to the endangered species list. Globally and in the U.S., vast classifications of foods could disappear with them should extinction occur. Research on the disorder continues while scientists pursue various methods of artificial pollination. For example, pollen has been collected and spread by aerial applicators; some even applied by hand with paint brushes. Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology crosspollinated Japanese lilies in 2017 using a 1.5-inch drone. The process employs a coating of horse hair and ionic sticky gel on the busy little metal device. Ironically, that drone is similar to ones featured in the final episode of Netflix’s Black Mirror. Although its Autonomous Drone Insects turned out to be secretly conducting government surveillance on A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

But nail-biting worries about bees doing it or not doing it are sharing the stage with cutting-edge technologies for additional agricultural applications. Robotics are already being implemented in strawberry harvesting, fresh-fruit picking, the dairy industry, data mapping and seeding. Autonomous tractors might soon become commonplace. Technology already allows a drone to communicate information about the exact nature and location of individual weeds in a field. The responding tractor, based on GPS-like systems, then knows exactly when, where and the proper amount of herbicide to apply rather than blindly dousing an entire field. On April 4, an interactive presentation at Colorado State University shared a broad overview of the future of farming in our technological society as described by presenters Raj Khosla and Tom McKinnon. Khosla is a nationally and internationally known expert on precision

agriculture and its many uses. He has generated many discoveries in that field, including innovative techniques now in use in Colorado, nationally and around the world. Quantifying variability of spatially diverse soils using satellite-based remote sensing to create management zones maximizes profits by reducing use of inputs. Khosla named the “five R’s of precision agriculture: at the Right time; in the Right amount; at the Right place; use of the Right input; in the Right manner.” These, he remarked, are the keys to the technique.

Bud’s Equipment

Stocking Locations: California • Arizona • Nevada • Utah

For example, he pointed to the past three years’ corn prices, which have been down due to a product glut. Precision agriculture farms the data to add value rather than simply trying to produce more low-profit corn (and thereby adding to the glut). Application of nitrogen, potassium, etc. is tailor-made per parts of a field based on information collected by drone technology. Khosla showed the audience a series of slides in discussion of CSU’s ARDEC research farm’s successes in precision agriculture. Massive amounts of drone-generated data per field have consistently and accurately predicted yields and lowered production costs, thereby increasing profit. The seminar co-presenter was McKinnon, founder of Boulderbased company, Agribotix. The small company began in 2012 when using drones to track a particular species of vulture. Now exclusively focusing on software products, Agribotix operates in 54 countries. vMcKinnon explained drone usage in the variable application of water, pesticides, fungicides, herbicides and fertilizer. He pointed out that, while data now comes from satellites and manned aircraft as well, only drones can fly under the clouds.

budsequipment5@gmail.com

McKinnon further discussed pertinent topics such as the final data product, cost, safety, reliability and ease of use. McKinnon mentioned Blue River Technology, which has trained a computer to identify and “nail” only the weeds with herbicide in strawberry fields as the tractor moves along. Khosla reminded the audience that the first moon landing occurred nearly 50 years ago, on July 21, 1969. The Apollo 11 computer used in that astounding feat of space exploration would be no match for even the Galaxy 56 phone… which is 4 billion times faster. Drones in agriculture now offer farming similar technological advantages to those that most people hold in their hand and use throughout each day. These robotic solutions maximize data, lower input investment and increase profit. Some even offer a helping wing to busy little bees that struggle to survive. — Martey Metzger is a freelance writer from Fort Collins. The acquisition of L’Orange brings innovative technology, bolsters relationships with key customers and enhances the profitability of our Industrial segment,” said Thomas Gendron, CEO and chairman of Woodward, in a statement. L’Orange will be renamed Woodward L’Orange. The purchase comes a few months after Woodward said it will close its Duarte, California that makes thrust reverser actuation systems and move the operations to its Fort Collins campus. That move will cost the company about $12 million, Woodward said Monday. In February, the Wall Street Journal hinted in a story that Boeing A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

The federal spending bill signed by President Donald Trump found $164 million in additional funding this year for NASA’s Orion capsule, the deep-space vehicle being built by Jefferson County-based Lockheed Martin Space Systems Co.

The president signed Congress’ $1.3 trillion appropriations bill last month, authorizing spending above what the president’s budget proposals sought for many programs, including Orion and its accompanying massive rocket. The omnibus bill provides NASA with a $20.7 billion budget for the 2018 federal fiscal year that’s already five months old. The budget calls for $1.35 billion for Orion. That compares to the $1.186 billion NASA was projecting under the president proposal this fiscal year. Similarly, the Space Launch System rocket, or SLS, being built to launch Orion — a project led by contractors Orbital ATK and Boeing Co. — receives $2.15 billion in the approved budget. NASA had previously expected nearly $1.94 billion under the president’s budget proposal. Development of the SLS upper stage rocket, a mobile launch platfor m for the rocket and ground systems for Orion and SLS receive another $1.515 billion. NASA commissioned Orion in 2006 as the spacecraft for traveling to the outer reaches of earth orbit and beyond, where mission distances are in the millions of miles, durations are long and radiation exposure is more intense than crews experience in lowearth orbits like those the space shuttle flew. LMSS won the contract to design and develop technology for the Orion capsules and to build the actual flight capsules for Orion’s two for missions. LMSS is a 14,000-employee divi-

sion of Bethesda, Maryland-based Lockheed Martin Corp. An Orion has been test-launched once in a 2014 flight without astronauts aboard. That mission launched atop a Delta IV rocket built by Centennial-based United Launch Alliance. Orion’s future missions are planned to launch using the SLS, a rocket capable of lifting 130 metric tons into orbit. The next Orion flight, known at Exploration Mission 1, is slated to take place in 2019, a threeweek mission without crew aboard. Orion and SLS’ first flight with astronauts aboard is slated to be in 2022. The omnibus bill signed also calls on NASA to use SLS to launch a pair of unmanned probes to the Jupiter moon called Europa, an orbiter by 2022 and a lander by 2024. and March. Capacity utilization for durable manufacturing moved upwards a percentage point to 76% in February as did Industrial Production which climbed to and index level of 106. The Michigan Consumer Confidence Index climbed 4 points in February and another 2 in March sitting at an index level of 101. Durable goods orders were up half a percent to $248 billion in February. The only indicator to move downward was the Purchasing Managers’ Index which moved from 61 to 59 which still represents a strong expansion of manufacturing business. By Elizabeth Engler Modic

Manufacturing Technology Shows Strength U.S. manufacturing technology orders for the first two months of 2018 climbed 27% higher than the same period in 2017 signaling continued strength in the recovery initiated in June 2017, according to the latest U.S. Manufacturing Technology Orders (USMTO) report from AMT – The Association For Manufacturing Technology. Orders totaled $354 million in February, down 5% from a 22-year high in January. “Our industry’s market is up 27% from 2017 as order growth rates accelerate; customers clamor for greater productivity and more capacity; and our member companies push their limits to keep pace with the market’s expansion,” says Pat McGibbon, AMT’s vice president of strategic analytics. “AMT supports free and fair trade; but recent trade issues with several of our major trading partners including China, the world’s largest consumer of manufacturing tech, will make harvesting the benefits of this boom market more challenging.” Every region saw significant year-to-date growth rates ranging from 15% to 76% even though monthto-month rates varied from a not as high as 19% in the Northeast region to a decline of 24% in the North Central-West region. The variation in growth levels reflects the regionality of sectors that were major forces in moving the market down, such as oil and gas exploration in the South-Central region or mining and off-road equipment in the North Central-West. Likewise, regions which have significant amounts of automotive, medical equipment or aerospace fared better during the downturn such as the Northeast, Southeast, and West regions. GE Aviation hosted the U.S. Army for the successful Preliminary Design Review (PDR) of the T901-GE-900 engine in early March. The T901 is GE Aviation’s engine for the Improved Turbine Engine Program (ITEP), the U.S. Army’s undertaking to re-engine its Boeing AH-64 Apache and Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters. The PDR is a major milestone within the Technology Maturation and Risk Reduction (TMRR) contract, a $102 million, 24-month contract the Army awarded GE in September 2016. The Army is in the process of down-selecting to one engine manufacturer for the Engineering and Manufacturing Development (EMD) phase by the end of 2018. The U.S. Army Contracting Command (ACC), based at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama, released its request for proposals for the EMD last November. Marketing Doesn’t Have To Be A Four-Letter Word A2Z Manufacturing Magazines has invited Heppner + Bourque to provide a series of articles to help demystify marketing and advertising from the point of view of manufacturers. The articles will explain how to affordably market your business, by properly prioritizing your marketing options, crafting a compelling message, and getting that message in front of the right people. We will show that good marketing does not need to be expensive, baffling or frightening. Heppner + Bourque is a creative team specializing in the production of sales and marketing materials for manufacturing, technology and industry. Lisa Heppner and JC Bourque have over six decades of combined experience in copywriting, graphic design, photography and video production.

Smaller Budgets— The smaller your marketing budget, the less tolerance for waste. Getting a well-crafted message in front of the right audience requires marketing experience— not simply artistic talent. If you miss the mark on prioritizing, messaging or strategy, precious marketing resources can be wasted and your marketing may need to go on hold until the next period. It doesn’t have to be this way. After decades of experience in the marketing field, here’s how I define marketing: The process of getting an accurate and compelling message about your product or service in front of people who have the interest and the capacity to buy it, while minimizing exposure to people who don’t. Although it sounds simple, it is often complicated by the staggering number of options in the current media landscape: print, web, direct mail, email, social media, video and blogging. In the next installment, we’ll learn how to prioritize these choices and apply your marketing resources in the places they are most likely to succeed.

JC Bourque, Partner, Heppner + Bourque

What is marketing? Ask a roomful of people and you’ll get two roomfuls of answers, many which would convince any sane businessperson to run for the exit with a firm grasp on their wallet. Being skeptical of the value of marketing is understandable, because it’s all too easy to waste time and resources while failing to achieve results. There are reasons for this: A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Lack of marketing talent in the manufacturing sector— Experienced advertising agencies tend to seek big manufacturing firms that have large annual budgets and in-house marketing directors. These big agencies have large staffs and high overhead, and need high-volume clients to operate. This leaves the mid-sized and small manufacturing companies with the choice of using less-experienced freelancers, to try to DIY their marketing or to avoid the subject entirely.

Opportunity Knocks It seems only yesterday the press was writing that in the near future many people would have to seek jobs as software coders. Not to knock coding, but how much more interesting a stronger economy looks today. The Labor Department said that the U.S. economy has arrived at this remarkable juncture:

There were 6.59 million unemployed Americans in March, and the number of jobs waiting to be filled that month was 6.55 million. That is, there are almost as many job openings as job seekers, a near match not seen for many years. The reality is more complicated but still encouraging. A primary reason for unfilled jobs remains the problem of people with deficient or inappropriate skills. We know about the manufacturers who need welders and other skilled craftsmen. But the greatest job growth in March came in business services, with 193,000 openings. Many of these employers are looking for people with presentation skills or the ability to navigate a spreadsheet. Increasingly, employers say that if a person is halfway presentable, they will provide the training, though that is expensive. Ultimately, these skills deficiencies reflect poorly on America’s schools, which often fail to graduate students who can read or write. The good news is the dynamism reflected in the Labor report. Restaurants are looking for workers in part because their employees are leaving for better jobs. Unemployment among low-skilled workers is at historic lows. The current economy is creating that most basic need: opportunity. Source:WSJ A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Polaris Alpha Announces major expansion plans in Colorado Polaris Alpha announced a major expansion of its Colorado offices, which will create 450 new high-paying jobs in Colorado Springs and the Metro Denver region. The expansion will happen in two phases over the next eight years. The first portion will focus on the company’s facilities in Metro Denver, where Polaris Alpha will build a new 20,000-square-foot office.Through the first phase, 150 new jobs will be created at the Metro Denver location. The second phase will see the expansion of Polaris Alpha’s Colorado Springs facilities. The company plans to expand those offices with an additional 80,000 square feet of new space, and will hire 300 more employees in the Springs by 2026. Polaris Alpha is a leading provider of mission-critical technology, software and solutions to the defense and intelligence communities. The plans are the culmination of efforts by both the Colorado Springs Chamber & EDC and the Metro Denver Economic Development Corporation in obtaining state tax credits and job incentives to help facilitate Polaris Alpha’s expansion, according to the release. “The two organizations worked together to secure a Colorado Job Growth Incentive Tax Credit from the State of Colorado that will assist in Polaris Alpha’s recruiting efforts to fill its job openings,” the release said. “It will also enable Polaris Alpha to execute a multi-pronged advertising campaign to generate interest from potential employees in both the Denver region and Colorado Springs.” Tammy Fields, chief economic development officer for the Colorado Springs Chamber & EDC, said Polaris Alpha plays a crucial and foundational role in the defense and technology industries of Colorado Springs and the surrounding region. “The Chamber & EDC is pleased we could help secure this long-term commitment,” she said in the release. “This announcement further validates Colorado Springs as a technology powerhouse and helps ensure a robust business climate for years to come.” In both locations, Polaris Alpha will be looking to hire software engineers, systems engineers, space scientists, cloud enterprise architects, machine learning specialists and other IT professionals. Those applicants with security clearances will be at a distinct advantage since much of the work performed by the company is for agencies within the U.S. Intelligence Community. Polaris Alpha, with dual headquarters in Colorado Springs and Fredericksburg, Va., is also expanding in other parts of the U.S. as well. The company is currently looking to fill a number of similar positions at its offices in several East Coast locations. Last month, Polaris Alpha announced it had been awarded $96 million in U.S. Air Force task orders on contracts involving work software development, maintenance and enhancement for Command, Control, Intelligence and Surveillance, and Reconnaissance operations.

Lifetime Products Mold Shop Just Invested In a High Technology, Large Capacity Mazak FJV-60/120E VMC and Sees Huge Gains in Productivity In one of the 22 large industrial buildings at the Freepor t Center that Lifetime Products occupies, is a small group of engineers and machinists who design and manufacture nearly all of the molds utilized to build Lifetime Product’s entire product portfolio. Kelly Martinez, long-ter m employee of Lifetime Products and Machine Shop Director, manages the entity. Kelly says that his team builds approximately 50 molds per year, and they use outside mold builders for a small amount of overflow work, but most are built in-house. Products manufactured by Lifetime Products typically require multiple molds. For example, the kayak pictured (a Hydros 8’6” Sit-On-Top kayak) has a cavity and a core; these are the primary molds but the kayak mold will have additional parts to them, such as the inserts, rail, cylinders, and bolts. The sheds they build require 10-12 molds to provide each component for assembly, Kelly shared. Molds were taking about 11 weeks to build, on average, and in their early stages of developments they often require revisions. Charles Monsen, long-term employee and Mold Designer/ CNC programmer, says, “About 70% of our molds require revisions due to feature modifications.” Lifetime Product’s mold shop is run like a standalone business, the team says, and it must be competitive with outside mold shops to retain Lifetime Products’ business. Kelly says, “We can design and manufacture our molds for about 15% less than they can be done by outside suppliers, and we can also turn modifications much faster than an outside entity.” The molds start with solid material that is generally quite large (>10,000 lbs.), so most machine shops do not have machines with the weight capacity nor the travels needed to manufacture these molds. The kayak pictured, for example, will start with a block of material that weighs in excess of 11,000 pounds prior to being machined. More than a year ago, the company made the decision to upgrade their machine shop productivity and capability. Randy Macari, CNC Programmer, says, “We did a substantial amount of research prior to making our latest purchase. We looked at probably 5 different machine tool builders, and since these large machines are not common, we traveled to meet companies who had the machines we were evaluating.” He continued, “One of our most surprising findings in this research was that you cannot take the specifications provided by the manufacturer alone, and make the assumption, that because some specs are higher, that the overall performance of the machine is better too. In the case of many manufacturers’ spec sheets, we found that some quoted ‘best case’ scenarios, where as other manufactures were more conservative.” The team at Lifetime’s mold shop utilized test runs on samples of A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

their own products to determine the machine that best fit their requirements. The team ran more than 50 test cuts between in-house machinery and multiple machine tool vendors. Most test cuts were performed on smaller machinery because larger bridge-frame equipment is not normally kept in-stock by machine tool vendors due to their size and enormity of investment. However, the smaller machines would serve as a representation of the performance of the larger machines. The best they achieved in-house was 63 minutes. Mazak was the top performer with 30 minutes of run time and a better surface finish. Ultimately, the Lifetime team selected the Mazak FJV-60/120E, which is a high-precision, high-productivity, double-column vertical machining center with enhanced spindle performance, the latest in CNC technology and rigid machine construction, specifically with regard to “Y” axis support. Its design ensures extremely high-precision machining over extended periods of operation by eliminating the spindle overhang that is a big concern with traditional C-frame vertical machining centers. Furthermore, its ergonomic design ensures convenient loading/unloading of very large work pieces and overall ease of operation. The table is also 100% supported by the massive base, over the entire travel. While all expected an improvement on the inhouse cycle time proportionate to the test cuts, there was no sure way to tell exactly what the cycle time on the newly purchased Mazak FJV-60/120Ewould be until another test cut was completed after the machine’s arrival. Everyone expected the larger and final equipment to move slower than the smaller machines, consequentially setting estimations of the cycle-time on the new machine to be closer to 40 minutes. With Lifetime’s new Mazak, these same test cuts took only 29 minutes and 45 seconds, entirely blowing away everyone’s predictions and setting the new record for the test cut! Not only was FJV-60/120E the top performer, but it was also proven to be designed

with power and speed proportionate to the capacity it was meant to handle. Randy says, “Since installing and utilizing the Mazak FJV-60/120E for 6 weeks now, the results are far better than we even expected. Here are some comparisons:

Our Kayak core took 175 hours to build and 14 hours to polish with our old e r m ac h in e (not a Mazak) and now takes 100 hours to build and 1 hour to polish (75% and 1300% faster) Our Shed cores took 243 hours to build and 30 hours to polish with our older machine (not a Mazak) and now takes 117 hours to build and 17 hours to polish (108% and 76% faster) Our Shed Floor cavity took 101 hours to build and 50 hours to polish with our older machine (not a Mazak) and now takes 17 hours to build and 30 hours to polish (494% and 67% faster)” Charles says, “You get what you pay for, and the Mazak is just so much faster than the machines we used prior to our purchase.” He adds, “With the Mazak FJV-60/120E, we are seeing better finishes, so there’s significantly less sanding and polishing, and we are reducing our electricity consumption. Due to the rigidity of the machine, our tool life is much better!” The team says that the Mazak is most impressive for heavy cutting. One example: Randy says, “We previously ran a 1-1/2” Kennametal inserted Mill-1 cutter at 6000RPM at 100IPM feed rate and .100” DOC when we were rouging a mold. Now we run the same cutter on the Mazak FJV at 8000RPM at 236IPM feed rate and .300” DOC.” Kelly says, “In our new machine tool purchase plan for mold making, we were looking for high speed, extreme rigidity, and an overall reduction in the cost of making our products.” With the purchase of their Mazak FJV-60/120E, the machine has a “Bridge-Frame” design that supports long “Y” travel (this model travels are X=120”, Y=55” & Z=26”). This additional “Y” travel has allowed the crew at Lifetime to cut set up time in-half, on a number of molds, that would have otherwise required multiple set ups. It is also equipped with an 18,000RPM spindle, 1000psi coolant, dual belt chip conveyor with a filtration system, an X-Large coolant tank, and the latest ‘MAZATROL SmoothG’ control, which comes standard on the machine. The MAZATROL SmoothG is an advanced CNC super powerful processing of data and incorporates a wide variety of advanced programming functions that make it easy to operate and ensure high-speed, high-accuracy machining performance. Functions Include: √ High Gain Feed Forward Control boosts machining speed and accuracy √ Variable Acceleration Control calculates and applies optimal acceleration for a combination of axes √ Smooth Corner Control makes cutter path adjustments to help shorten cycle times while holding accuracy

√ Rapid Over Lap increases the speed and smoothness in which the machine rapids to reduce non-cut time √ Smooth Machine Configuration optimizes and allows fine tuning of the machine for different machining styles

The Lifetime team is so pleased with their Mazak FJV-60/120E, that after just 6 weeks of production, they ordered a 2nd machine! The Lifetime products team had been purchasing Mazak machines from Smith Machinery for many years now (since 1991), so they knew Mazak was a premier machine and they knew they would get great performance with a Mazak. They are also very familiar with the combination of Smith Machinery/ Mazak service; Charles says one word describes it, ‘Outstanding’. Both Mazak FJV machines were purchased with support from David Soares, Sales Engineer for Smith Machinery. David and the Smith Machinery team worked with Lifetime Products throughout the testing and the decision making process. David values the opportunity he has to work with the Lifetime team. Together with Kelly Martinez and Dennis Norman, they visited Yamazaki Mazak in Japan, and toured the five factories there. They also were able to meet with the Yamazaki family. Mazak is a privately held family-business that will be celebrating its 100th year in business in 2019! The fact that their name is on every one of their machines means a lot to them, insomuch that they support every Mazak for its life, and ensure that they are built of the upmost quality and leading technology. U.S. Army Scoping Out Potential Future Apache

service into the 2040s and possibly the 2060s.

The U.S. Army is gathering potential requirements for another evolution of the Boeing AH-64 Apache attack helicopter, which is now expected to remain in

The possible improvements are being grouped into two categories of engineering change proposal (ECP): upgrades that could be incorporated relatively easily into the current AH-64E, and major changes that would require helicopters to return to the depot, says Rich Tyler, the Army’s Apache deputy program manager. Topping the list of major changes is re-engining with the 3,000-shp Improved Turbine Engine, but the array of potential upgrades includes adding a propulsor and compounding wing to increase the helicopter’s performance. Also listed are sensor and survivability upgrades and an advanced cockpit and flight controls.
