Each issue, I spend time each day scanning articles on manufacturing that I hope are relevant to our readers. These past weeks, as I read manufacturing news, I am bombarded with articles on the need to attract a more qualified work force. And there is some good news here - You will read in this issue about programs in Utah (Northern Utah NTMA) that are providing a pipeline of new machinists through apprenticeship programs, and through the ‘Talent Ready Utah’ program. In Colorado, The Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT) is funding workforce-training programs for manufacturing. If you actively seek out these programs, you will almost always find funding and programs to help you meet your workforce needs. Where is the next generation of our workers coming from? Invariably, they are coming from the group of individuals termed Millennials, those roughly comprised of people between the ages of 21 and 34. And what is your perception of these Millennials? If you adhere to the stereotypes, particularly the negative ones (and aren’t stereotypes typically negative?), you will be looking at new additions to your team that: 1) Feel entitled. In fact, much to the displeasure of many Baby Boomers, younger workers are in fact advancing more rapidly than previous generations did, says Jennifer McClure, president of leadership strategy firm Unbridled Talent. 2) They constantly want positive reinforcement. Many older workers call them ‘praise hungry’, when in reality they are just accustomed to getting more frequent feedback. 3) They are easily sidetracked by technology. Since Millennials are the first generation raised as digital natives, it is absolutely certain that they embrace technology.This can be a very good thing for your workplace – digital technology is certainly a tool that can enable workers to perform better at their jobs. 4)They’re job hoppers.A 2016 Gallup poll found that more than 20% of Millennials changed jobs within the past year, which is more than 3 times the number of non-Millennials. So it is true, but research shows that external hires can garner 18-20% more money than internally promoted workers. So if we look at their reluctance to stay at one company for an extended period of time strictly from a monetary standpoint, what they are doing is entirely understandable. 5) They want special privileges.This perception is derived from Millennials’ desire for flexibility. They don’t believe that staying at the office for long hours each day is necessarily a prerequisite for accomplishing more, and they aren’t afraid to express their desires for flexibility (e.g. telecommuting) to their boss. Are they really asking for privileges that are out of line? Interestingly, Millennials were born to Baby Boomers like you and me. So didn’t we raise them? Hmm – That is something to ponder. The bottom line is that we will need this talent pool in our workforce if we are going to succeed.There simply isn’t another well to draw from. Stereotypes are derived from trends or patterns, no doubt. But if we take the approach that Millennials are adding new skill sets to the workplace, and we can blend the best of each generation, we will invariably have a workplace where people, young and old, want to join. In closing, let’s embrace our next generation, the Millennials. Capitalize on their understanding of the digital world we all live in. Until next issue, I wish you the best and God Bless Our Troops!

Announcements & Releases NTMA and Xometry Announce Partnership The National Tooling and Machining Association (NTMA) and Xometry, the largest marketplace for custom manufactured parts, announced a partnership to provide NTMA members with greater access to manufacturing jobs through the Xometry Partner Network. Xometry’s instant quoting platform allows customers to easily order custom parts online. The parts are then sourced through the hundreds of vetted manufacturers across the United States who are part of the Xometry Partner Network. There is no cost for manufacturers to join and accept jobs on the Network and there is no bidding. Partners can choose to accept only the jobs they want, when it works for them. A wide range of customers currently using the Network including General Electric and other Fortune 100 companies, start-ups and even NASA. “We are thrilled to be able to offer our members access to manufacturing jobs through the Xometry Partner Network,” said Dave Tilstone, President of the National Tooling and Machining Association. “Xometry’s on-demand platform is transforming the industry and we are excited to provide our members with access to their large network.” The partnership means that NTMA Members will have greater access to fully vetted jobs from across the United States. “By offering partners real jobs from across the country, we are able to provide opportunities a manufacturer would not likely see on their own,” said Randy Altschuler, CEO of Xometry. “A machine shop in Texas, for example, is able to easily access jobs coming from Maine or California.” Xometry’s current manufacturing capabilities include precision manufacturing, CNC machining, sheet metal, 3D printing, and casting jobs. While the Xometry Partner Network is open to all manufacturers, membership is limited based on a thorough vetting and approval process.The partnership between NTMA and Xometry gives NTMA members expedited review of their application into the network, allowing them to start seeing jobs within 24 hours of applying. Utah’s Grant Program Targets Demand For Skilled Workers Utah is currently among a few states that have more job openings than there are qualified people to fill them.

To his good fortune, he was referred to Paramount Machine, a Salt Lake Citybased precision machining company that was looking for apprentice candidates to work in their state-of-the-art facility. Since his father was an “oldschool” machinist, he gave the program a look and was very surprised 6:33 AM at how the industry had changed from when his father had worked in it. “What he did was totally different than what we do here,” Tronier said. “Old-school machining is touching the parts and moving them around (to make them). This you almost have the complete part without every really touching it.” That’s because today’s parts are manufactured in computerized fabrication devices that are programmed by machinists rather than forged by them, said Paramount Machine President Steve Van Orden. “This (apprenticeship) program helps put awareness out there so that we get kids that are ready,” he said. The industry has changed so drastically in the two decades since Van Orden started the company that he said people are always amazed at how high tech his facility is and the processes used to machine parts and tools. “When I started it was manual equipment with little technology, just dials and gauges,” he said. “Now it’s all electronic and measured out. Measuring instruments are better, cutting tools are better and faster, machines can create shapes and forms that we couldn’t do in the past.” The apprenticeship program was made possible by Talent Ready Utah

grant funding from $2.125 million of state monies designated to promote educational collaboration to help Utah develop a pipeline of qualified labor to meet the needs of employers statewide. People that have vocational training have less regrets about the pathway they chose (for their careers). This apprenticeship program is a part of that. We need to capitalize on that. “Building Utah’s workforce is essential for our economy and for the success of our families,” said Utah Gov. Gary Herbert. “We need to prepare a critical mass of skilled workers in select economic clusters where there is demand.That can only happen if we have talent ready for those jobs.” The Talent Ready Utah program supports the governor’s strategy for a qualified workforce in creating a more responsive post-secondary education system, said Tami Pyfer, Herbert’s education adviser. Key initiatives will focus on increasing the number of employers who invest in high-quality, work-based learning partnerships with education and by developing the pipeline of talent, she said. Program grants focus on strengthening collaboration between industry, education, and economic development in order to better respond to the needs of regional and statewide-designated clusters, said Melisa Stark, UtahTalent Ready grant manager. Since 2009, more than 70 projects have been funded through the Talent Ready Utah program, with 174 training programs developed or expanded and over 5,800 workers receiving industryrecognized credentials. The program is focused on building the state’s workforce by increasing work-based learning opportunities available to students and adult learners, Pyfer said. “People that have vocational training have less regrets about the pathway they chose (for their careers),” she said “This apprenticeship program is

a part of that. We need to capitalize on that.” The state’s employment situation remains strong, according to the latest data from the Utah Department of Workforce Services.The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for last month rose 1/10 of a percent to 3.2 percent, as Utah’s nonfarm payroll employment for May 2017 grew by just over 3 percent as the state economy added 44,500 jobs since last May. While the current employment level indicates that 1,467,900 Utahns are gainfully employed, approximately 50,800 people were jobless during the month and actively seeking work. Nationally, the unemployment rate decreased 1/10 of a percentage point from April to register at 4.3 percent. The Department of Workforce Services reported that nine of the 10 private sector industry groups measured in the establishment survey posted net job increases in May compared to last year, with outlier Natural Resources and Mining losing 700 positions. Conversely, the largest private sector employment increases were in professional and business services, which gained 11,800 positions; with trade, transportation and utilities adding 9,400 jobs; and construction bringing on 5,200 new positions. US Factory Output Rebounded 0.2 Percent In June U.S. factory output rebounded in June as manufacturers churned out more cars, appliances and furniture, a reassuring sign for U.S. industry. The Federal Reserve said that factory production rose 0.2 percent last month, reversing a drop of 0.4 percent in May. Manufacturing output is up 1.2 percent from June 2016. Overall industrial production — including factories, mines and utilities — rose 0.4 percent after growing 0.1 percent in May. Industrial production is up 2 percent over the past year. Manufacturers have bounced back from a slump in late 2015 and 2016 caused by cutbacks in the energy industry and a stronger dollar that made American products costlier in foreign markets. Mine production rose 1.6 percent on top of May’s 1.9 percent increase on ramped up oil drilling and coal mining. Mine output is up 9.9 percent from June 2016. Robotics Industry Growth To Be Gigantic In Next 5 Years, Says Report Growth in the global robotics market is expected to be massive in the next five years, according to Boulder market intelligence firm.

Revenue from sales of industrial and non-industrial robots is expected to rise from $31 billion in 2016 to $237.3 billion by 2022, according to Tractica research. Most of the growth will come from the massive increase in sales of consumer robots, enterprise robots, autonomous vehicles, and unmanned aerial vehicles (drones), which will overtake traditional industrial robots, according to Tractica. “The key underlying story emerging in the industry is that industrial robotics, which has been the traditional pillar of the robotics market, has given way to non-industrial robot categories like personal assistant robots, UAVs, and autonomous vehicles,” said Aditya Kaul,Tractica research director, in a statement. Locally, that growth in robots is evident with last month’s announcement that Misty Robotics was spun off from Sphero, the Boulder-based maker of the smartphone-controlled BB-8 robot, and has launched with an initial backing of $11.5 million. And Amazon.com said it will staff its new Thornton fulfillment center with a fleet of robots, as well as human workers. The Invent And Manufacture In America Act: How Congress Can Help Bring Jobs Back To The US In the past few weeks, a major piece of bipartisan tax legislation that should be of immense interest to American manufacturers has been introduced in both the House and Senate. Should this legislation be signed into law it would have an enormous impact on U.S. manufacturing, bringing with it the potential to create thousands of high-paying jobs and the ability to re-energize this vital sector of the economy. Last month, U.S. Senators Chris Coons (D-DE) and Pat Roberts (R-KS) introduced the Invent and Manufacture in America Act, a bill that would provide a tax cut for companies that conduct research and development in the U.S. and also domestically manufacture products resulting from this R&D. After the Senate bill was introduced, U.S. Representatives Mike Kelly (R-PA) and Ron Kind (D-WI) brought a companion bill to the House, ensuring that the legislation gained traction in both chambers of Congress. How would this tax cut work? By further strengthening the Research and Development (R&D) Tax Credit—an incentive that I’m sure is familiar to many manufacturers. A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

To better understand the specifics of the proposed legislation and its ultimate impact, let’s take a moment to examine the R&D Tax Credit and its application to manufacturers. While the credit is still largely under-claimed by U.S. businesses (a fact that is true for industries across the board, including the manufacturing sector) manufacturers have been the most proactive in claiming tax savings. According to numbers from the IRS for the most recent year on record, manufacturers constituted the largest amount of R&D Tax Credit claimants at 39.2 percent and received 61 percent of the total value claimed from the credit across all industries. If it seems odd that manufacturers would benefit from a “research and development” tax credit, it is important to note that the tax code’s definition for R&D is often much different than what the average person might expect. Simply put, applied science is as eligible for the credit as traditional research, meaning the technical work performed on the factory floor to improve a product (or the technical work done to enhance the processes used to make those products) will typically qualify manufacturers for the credit. For the steps taken to make a product or process faster, cheaper, greener or more efficient, manufacturers can receive substantial tax savings. To further understand the credit and the value it can provide for manufacturers, let’s take a look at a real-world example. For four years’ worth of qualifying projects, one precision manufacturer received over $1 million in federal and state R&D tax credits.

Sources indicate the U.S. Secretary of Commerce is poised to recommend that President Trump impose tariffs or import quotas on foreign steel and aluminum from multiple or all countries. One Voice filed formal comments raising concern that imposing tariffs or import quotas on foreign steel or aluminum, but not the downstream products, will simply shift injury from producers to consumers, leading to more imports of competitors’ products containing foreign steel and aluminum coming in tariff free.This will hurt both OneVoice members and U.S. steel and aluminum producers. Woman-Owned Colorado Company Gets $93M Air Force Contract A Colorado defense contractor founded and run by a woman has received the largest contract in its 17-year history. Boecore, a Colorado Springs company founded by its CEO Kathy Boe, was recently awarded a Shared Early Warning System (SEWS II) Engineering and Contractor Logistics Support (SEWS II) contract from the Department of Air Force, Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC), Air Force Life Cycle Management. SEWS “provides critical near-real-time early warning information of ballistic missile launches,” the company said. “Work will be performed at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, and is expected to be complete by June 30, 2022,” the government said in a statement. Boecore said it’s grown by 60 people in 2017 and expects to hire another 50 by the end of the year to support the SEWS II contract and several other programs. The company now employs 275 people in Colorado Springs, Alabama, California, New Mexico, Washington, North Carolina, and Virginia. The company was founded in 2000 by Kathy Boe and currently has 40 job openings available in Colorado, according to its website.

Machinists Inc. Provides Critical Components For Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s TANDM Project Lawrence Livermore National Labs is a long standing customer of Machinists Inc. When Lawrence Livermore needed critical parts

manufactured for the TANDM (Target and Diagnostic Manipulator) project, they turned to the experts at MI. The National Ignition Facility, or NIF, http://www.machinistsinc.com/ research-labs.html, is a large laserbased inertial confinement fusion research device, located at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California. NIF uses lasers to heat and compress a small amount of hydrogen fuel to the point where nuclear fusion reactions take place. All testing must be done in a vacuum for the NIF high energy laser systems. Extreme heat is generated during the testing process, it is critical that test articles not change position when they heat up. http:// icalepcs.synchrotron.org.au/talks/ mod3o03_talk.pdf The TANDM project allows Lawrence Livermore to have quicker changing of the test articles. “In order to do that, they needed the type of equipment that MI builds, which is a very large accurate vacuum tight chamber and also a positioning head that was made out of Invar, which required a very unique process. We took an Invar plate and roll welded it, making a large Invar tube,” said Jeff Tomson, MI director of marketing. http://www. machinistsinc.com/energy.html One of the unique things about this, Tomson said, is the use of Invar and the manufacturing and fabrication process to produce the parts they needed. Invar is a high nickel content steel. It has a very low coefficient of thermal expansion, therefore it will maintain relatively stable dimensions during temperature changes. “The Invar tube is 16-inches in diameter and 12-feet long.The chamber MI built

was 30-feet long and 4-feet in diameter. It is an all aluminum fabrication with machined surfaces. But the extension boom that integrated with the laser is all Invar,” Tomson said. Since it is a government project, MI bid on the job.Tomson said there was a lot of work to do once they won the bid. They actually built two of the TANDM systems, because there are multiple test locations for the large chambers. Each chamber can have multiple tests that can be done. MI worked in collaboration with Lawrence Livermore to overcome some very unique and difficult manufacturing issues that came up along the way. “With our extensive background in the manufacturing of Invar we were able to take the lead role in developing the unique process required for this project. Samsung Could Soon Eclipse Intel as the World’s No. 1 Chipmaker Intel Corp. has maintained a stranglehold over the global chip market for 26 years, but a shift in the chip market may mean that it won’t hold that position much longer. For the first time ever, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. is expected to overtake the Silicon Valley tech giant as the world’s number one chipmaker by revenue, as it reaps the benefits of soaring memory chip prices and increased consumer demand for faster smartphones. Intel has been the biggest chip maker by revenue since 1991. Samsung is expected to deliver record-setting chip sales in the fiscal second quarter that will likely unseat Intel’s lead, Reuters reports. The South Korean chipmaker is estimated to have generated about $15 billion in total semiconductor sales during the second quarter, which would surpass Intel’s estimated $14.4 billion in chip sales, according to semiconductor market research firm IC Insights. “Over the past 24 years, some companies have narrowed the sales gap between themselves and Intel, but never have they surpassed the MPU [microprocessing unit] giant,” IC Insights wrote. “If memory prices don’t tank in the second half of this year, it’s quite possible that Samsung could displace Intel in full-year semiconductor sales results as well.” A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Trump Move on Job Training Brings ‘Skills Gap’ Debate to the Fore President Trump is taking one the most concrete steps of his presidency to address the employment prospects of workers left behind by the current economic expansion. In doing so, he also joins a long-running and occasionally contentious debate over whether those workers have the skills they need to land desirable jobs. Mr. Trump’s action comes in the form of an executive order expanding federally funded apprenticeship programs. The order would create a category of programs that industry groups and other third parties could develop and then submit for Labor Department approval, rather than working within existing department guidelines. “Apprenticeships place students into great jobs without the crippling debt of traditional four-year college degrees,” Mr. Trump said. “Instead apprentices earn while they learn.” Mr.Trump would redirect over $100 million of federal job training money

to pay for the new apprenticeships, supplementing $90 million in funding for the existing program. Corporate groups hailed the idea of expanding apprenticeship programs and making them more flexible, arguing that apprenticeships are a reliable path to good-paying jobs in sectors like retail and hospitality for those who could no longer support themselves in production sectors like manufacturing. Underlying the relatively modest size and scope of Mr. Trump’s proposal is a much bigger idea about why workers who have lost good-paying jobs that do not require a college degree are struggling to find work at comparable wages. In the eyes of the president and many corporate leaders, the crux of the problem is skills — the proposition that employers are eager to fill millions of good-paying jobs that workers lack the skills to perform.

Despite the belief of some, however, there is little evidence that the economy is suffering from an unusually large skills gap.While economic indicators do show a historically high number of job vacancies, research economists tend to believe that the skills gap accounts for, at most, a limited portion of this development. One way to see this is to hypothetically assign unemployed workers to jobs or industries regardless of their qualifications, essentially assuming away the skills gap. The difference between the hypothetical unemployment rate that results from this exercise and the actual unemployment rate would show the extent to which the skills gap is driving unemployment.But when you do this, according to Aysegul Sahin, an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the size of the skills gap today is unremarkable. “The level of mismatch at the occupation level is pretty much where it was before the Great

Ms. Sahin points to two other factors causing employers to take longer to fill jobs: the aging of the work force and a long-term decline in the proportion of start-ups in the economy. Older businesses tend to grow more slowly and typically take longer to fill vacancies as a result.They often devote more resources to the process and have more bureaucracy overseeing it, such as a human resources department. Steven J. Davis, an economist at the University of Chicago, helped create an index showing that the average time it takes to fill a job is the longest since January 2001. He believes that a skills gap could be part of the explanation, but he also sees several other factors. For example, he said, employers have better technology and data to screen candidates for drug problems, criminal records or credit problems, prolonging the hiring process. Proponents of the skills gap hypothesis typically contend that the loss of many jobs in manufacturing, for example, is offset by the creation of jobs at comparable pay that the same workers could perform with somewhat more training. The major new update in FeatureCAM 2018 is a new ribbon-style user interface, which is something the team has been working on since Autodesk acquired Delcam in 2014.You will still be able to easily find and access important tools, but the 2018 versions categorize functionality into similar groupings, with the most commonly used features front and center.The new interface is designed to provide an improved user experience and help shorten the learning curve. Autodesk acquired Delcam in February of 2014. Bruce says, “The acquisition is beneficial to our company for a couple of reasons: 1) Autodesk is a US based company, with headquarters in California, so we receive support from the previous Delcam office in Salt Lake City, and have access to a larger support team through Autodesk. 2) We needed a CAM package for our CNC Swiss screw machining and Autodesk is the developer and owner of PartMaker, the premier standard software programming package for Swiss-type lathes. Now with Autodesk as our software provider, we get a very advanced package that now includes screw machining.” As an innovator, RAM Company is an early adopter of FeatureCAM 2018, and they upgraded primarily to incorporate PartMaker into their operations. Gazarik says IXPE is “a recent win” for Ball Aerospace, designed to look into deep space for data on neutron stars and supermassive black holes. All of Ball Aerospace’s manufacturing takes place in Colorado, and the company has facilities elsewhere, including an analytics operation in Dayton, Ohio. In Boulder, the 389,000-square-foot Fisher Complex is the hub for most of the company’s aerospace manufacturing, with “state-of-the-art machine shops” and capabilities with composites and exotic materials. “We have a major focus on the space side in Boulder,” says Gazarik. The business is split between civil, commercial, and defense work. Another business unit manufactures RF antennas largely for military aircraft in Westminster, where ground was broken in April 2017 on a 145,000-square-foot expansion that will double the size of the facility. Innovation touches just about every aspect of the business. Virtual reality has recently emerged as a tool to test CAD designs in a simulated control panel in 2016. “We can put on a headset and you can look inside the instrument from any angle,” says Gazarik. Ball Aerospace’s sales totaled $818 million in 2016, up slightly from 2015, and the trend looks to be accelerating. “We’ve won more than our fair share of work,” says Gazarik. “Our backlog is growing.” Ball Aerospace added about 300 employees in 2016, and he forecasts a similar number of hires in 2017. With the second-highest aerospace jobs per capita in the U.S., Colorado has a deep talent pool and it’s also easy to recruit transplants, says Gazarik. “What we have is a strong concentration in Colorado and specifically in Boulder,” he says, citing quality of life and the presence of national labs

as big catalysts. But the state’s entire aerospace ecosystem is enviable with large companies like Ball, Lockheed Martin, and Sierra Nevada Corporation’s Space Systems acting as anchors for a constellation of subcontractors. Gazarik came to Ball Aerospace in 2015 after an 11-year stint at NASA that he calls “a wonderful experience.” He now oversees engineering, supply chain management, and manufacturing. Challenges: “Getting the best talent,” says Gazarik. “There is a war for talent out there.” Ball Aerospace is focused on fostering inclusivity in its workforce, he adds. “Diversity is really key,” he says. “It’s a continued opportunity. . . . We’ve worked really hard on it.” Opportunities: “I think we see the importance of space growing across the board,” says Gazarik. “We know there are at least 3,000 planets out there. Let’s go out and learn more about them.” Needs: “The need for skilled trades is really critical,” says Gazarik, highlighting workforce training programs with Front Range Community College, Red Rocks Community College, and Metropolitan State University of Denver. “There are great opportunities for those who don’t pursue a four-year degree.” A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Are Apprenticeships the Answer? Trump is pushing them, as did Obama. On paper, everyone seems to love them. What’s the payoff, and what are the barriers? And if they’re so great, why are many manufacturers still reluctant to embrace them? One manufacturer said an apprenticeship program offers a number of attractive intangibles —boosting morale in the current workforce, bringing a youthful energy to the place, and building strong connections with the school system that pay off in future recruiting. “Mr. Apprentice” himself, President Donald Trump, in recent months has very publicly announced his approval for boosting apprenticeship programs. He’d like to ramp up the number of apprenticeships in the United States from 500,000 to 5 million—a process that, at the current rate apprenticeships are A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

growing, would take over 100 years. And he’s promising money to back up his endorsement of the idea—with $200 million, to be exact, more than the $90 million the Obama administration allocated for the effort. Trump specifically mentioned manufacturing apprenticeships in his executive order on apprenticeship expansion, issued in June. It’s an order that has potential, say workforce leaders in manufacturing, but lacks meaningful details. “It’s a very ambitious goal,” says Montez King, interim executive director of the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS) who spent 25 years as a machinist and then a workforce trainer for Magna International. “I like the virtual goal of course. Even if he got to a million apprenticeships, I would be like, ‘Wow, that’s great.’” The big questions:Where will the extra funding come from, as theWhite House budget proposal slashes Department of Labor funds by 21%? And which regulations will be changed or eliminated, as Trump promised, to make apprenticeship programs more accessible and user-friendly for real-world employers? Representatives from the U.S. Department of Labor did not follow through on IndustryWeek’s requests for an interview, so we’re left to speculate. In the meantime, here is some advice from apprenticeship experts in manufacturing, policy and higher education on what the government and industry’s priorities should be as they try to train more workers to fill an estimated 350,000 unfilled manufacturing positions. Montez King spent 10 years running Magna’s apprenticeship program in inner-city Baltimore. When he would talk to kids about growing up poor in the city, getting a work uniform that he could wear to school because he couldn’t afford new clothes, and making a good middle class salary as soon as he finished his apprenticeship---while his 40-year-old cousin is still paying off student loans—it really resonated

with them.

King, whose organization (NIMS) received $1.4 million of the $90 million Apprenticeship USA funds during the Obama administration, feels that the best people to develop manufacturing apprenticeship programs are manufacturing leaders themselves—through associations or regional collaborations. An understanding of manufacturing isn’t required for the ApprenticeshipTraining Representatives (ATRs) from the Department of Labor who visit plants and make sure all the boxes are checked. A typical rep might have manufacturing, IT and healthcare apprenticeship programs to manage, “so you’re not specializing in a particular area,” says King. “The training reps from the government I’ve worked with, they don’t speak the same language that manufacturing is looking for. No one wants government to come in to their organizations and tell them how to run their training programs.”

Tammy Simmons, vice president of machine components maker Machine Specialties in Greensboro, N.C., says that an apprenticeship program seemed impractical and out of reach for her company until she heard the testimony of Roger Collins, a Siemens technical training specialist, at an Apprentice 2000 information session.There, she learned that registered apprenticeships have looser age restrictions than regular labor laws and allow high-school-age students to work in plants. And that the requirements weren’t as rigid as she thought— you can tailor the experience to the needs of your company. Collins also explained intanglibles that got her attention—boosting morale in the current workforce, bringing a youthful energy to the place, and building strong connections with the school system that pay off in future recruiting. “The structure of the industry has changed,” says James Jacobs, president of Macomb Community College in Michigan, which conducts numerous apprenticeships for the auto industry. “Lean manufacturing, supply chain management …all of these things give companies a great deal of insecurity in general [especially if they’re the supplier]. Navy’s D5 Missile, Most Powerful U.S.Weapon, To Provide Backbone Of Nuclear Deterrent Through 2040 The U.S. Navy announced that it was awarding Lockheed Martin a $43.9 million contract for work supporting production and sustainment of the Trident II D5 missile. It was a relatively modest award as these things go, so the announcement went largely unnoticed outside the defense community. You would never guess from reading the news release that the D5 is the most powerful, reliable weapon in the U.S. military arsenal -- a system so potent that it is the centerpiece of U.S. efforts to prevent nuclear war. Lockheed Martin has been a contributor to my think thank and a consulting client for nearly a third of that time, and even I seldom hear anything about the D5.The reason why is that unlike just about any other major weapon system you can mention, there never seems to be a problem with the missile. The Navy runs a very tight ship when it comes to nuclear deterrence, and it keeps Lockheed Martin on board because its three-stage, solid-fuel ballistic missile is the most reliable such vehicle ever built, bar none. Since its design was completed in 1989, the D5 has executed 165 successful test flights -- a record unmatched by any other large ballistic missile or launch vehicle. As for its potency, a single D5 equipped with multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles carrying nuclear warheads can destroy a small country such as North Korea. A handful of D5s could collapse the entire electrical grid, transportation network and information infrastructure of even the largest countries. And the Navy has hundreds of D5 missiles. So why would the United States need such a fearsome weapon? The answer comes down to this: if you can’t defend your homeland against a large-scale nuclear attack then the next-best option is to threaten adversaries with devastating retaliation if they launch one. In other words, you have to convince the enemy that attacking America would be suicidal. The strategy is called deterrence, and it is the main reason why no foreign nation has seriously threatened the U.S. with nuclear aggression since the Navy built out its undersea missile force.

When the goal is deterring aggression, the key metric of success isn’t how many weapons a country possesses. It’s how many weapons survive a surprise attack, because those are the weapons the enemy has to worry about. Possessing a secure retaliatory force is the sine qua non of effective deterrence. So deploying hundreds of D5 missiles on submarines that stay submerged and undetectable for months at a time is just about the most potent deterrent imaginable. The U.S. actually maintains a “triad” of nuclear systems -- D5s on submarines, land-based ballistic missiles, and long-range bombers -- so enemies can harbor no illusions about their ability to disarm America in a surprise attack. But countries like Russia know precisely where U.S. land-based missile silos and bomber bases are located, so they could hypothetically be targeted in a crisis. The submarines can’t be. Once they are on station under the Atlantic or Pacific oceans, they are essentially impossible to find, and thus highly survivable. Source: Forbes

The announcement sets Dream Chaser’s first cargo flight to the International Space Station for launch from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida, in 2020. A second ISS cargo flight is contracted to lift off the next year. “ULA is an important player in the market and we appreciate their history and continued contributions to space flights and are pleased to support the aerospace community in Colorado and Alabama,” said Mark Sirangelo, corporate vice president of SNC’s Space Systems. In 2016, NASA added SNC Space Systems to its program using commercial spacecraft to haul supplies to the ISS. The other companies are Hawthorne, California-based Space Exploration Technologies Inc., known as SpaceX, and Orbital Sciences Corp., based in Dulles, Virginia.

NASA has contracting commercial resupply flights to the ISS to SpaceX and Orbital since 2008. Orbital twice has used ULA rockets to lift its cargo ship to the ISS after development of Orbital’s own rocket was delayed by accidents. The Dream Chaser adds to ULA’s experience in ISS resupply. “We recognize the importance of on-time and reliable transportation of crew and cargo to Station and are honored the Atlas V was selected to continue to launch cargo resupply missions for NASA.” said Gary Wentz, ULA vice president of Human and Commercial Systems. SNC Space System’s self-flying Dream Chaser is designed to be launched from a rocket in lowearth orbit and fly itself on return to earth and land on a runway. SNC Space Systems is a business unit of Sierra Nevada Corp., a private space and defense contractor based in Sparks, Nevada. AI Could Add $15 Trillion to Global Economy by 2030 Artificial intelligence might not be so threatening after all. Amid warnings of the economic disruption that robots and automation could unleash on the world economy as traditional roles disappear, researchers are finding that new technologies will help fuel global growth as productivity and consumption soar. AI will contribute as much as $15.7 trillion to the world economy by 2030, according to a PwC report released last month That’s more than the current combined output of China and India. Gains would be split between $6.6 trillion from increased productivity as businesses automate processes and augment their labor forces with new AI technology, and $9.1 trillion from consumption side-effects as shoppers snap up personalized and higher-quality goods, according to the report. “The mindset today is man versus machine,” Anand Rao, an AI researcher at PwC, said at a briefing Tuesday at the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting of the New Champions in Dalian, China, where the report was released. “What we see as the future is man and machine together can be better than the human.”

Philips To Buy Colorado Medical Device Maker For $2.2 Billion Dutch health technology company Royal Philips said it’s buying a Colorado Springs medical device maker for $2.16 billion. Royal Philips is paying all cash for The Spectranetics Corporation, which was founded in 1984 and makes vascular intervention devices, such as laser atherectomy catheters for treatment of blockages. Scott Drake, president and CEO of The Spectranetics Corp., said the purchase of his company by Royal Philips will “allow us to accelerate growth.” Spectranetics employs about 900 people and is the 58th-largest company in Colorado, based on 2016 market capitalization, according to Denver Business Journal research. “This agreement with Philips will deliver significant value to our shareholders. Combining Philips’ innovations in image-guided therapy with Spectranetics’ portfolio and expertise in the therapeutic device space will create exciting opportunities and allow us to accelerate growth,” said Scott Drake, president and CEO of Spectranetics, in a statement. Since NAFTA came into force in 1994, the U.S. trade gap in goods with Mexico had soared from a $1.3 billion surplus to a $64 billion deficit, the U.S. Trade Representative said. The United States said it would work to shrink trade deficits with Canada and Mexico in talks to renegotiate the landmark 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The Trump administration has focused on boosting domestic manufacturing while cutting trade deficits -- which it sees as damaging to the economy -- a move that risks undoing the free trade efforts of prior administrations.

The U.S. Trade Representative said that when NAFTA talks begin next month,Washington also will seek to lower trade barriers for produce and industrial goods -- while eliminating subsidies U.S. officials say are unfair in trade with the two neighboring nations. “President Trump continues to fulfill his promise to renegotiate NAFTA to get a much better deal for all Americans,” U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said. “Too many Americans have been hurt by closed factories, exported jobs, and broken political promises.” USTR released the NAFTA negotiating objectives as required prior to the start of the talks, which will be held under a pressing political timeline due to elections next year in the U.S. and Mexico. President Donald Trump retreated from his threat to exit NAFTA, but has described the agreement as a “disaster” that has drained the US of wealth and jobs. Mexico’s economic ministry said in a statement it “welcomes” the U.S. objectives, saying they “will contribute to defining the issues on the negotiating table with greater clarity and the timeline for modernizing the agreement.” Economists agree the trade pact -- which accounts for about $1 trillion in annual trade between the three nations -- can be updated. But they have warned against attempting to reduce bilateral deficits, which would face practical hurdles and slim chances of success. However, the talks will not significantly reduce bilateral trade deficits since in most cases the negotiators will be powerless to affect the private buying decisions of companies and consumers, he said.

Colorado Building Manufacturing Firm Raises $40M An Arvada building manufacturing company said it’s closed on a Series D funding round that raised $40 million. Prescient, a 5-year-old company that uses software to design and build commercial buildings including apartment and hotels, said it’s now raised a total of $80 million. Satyen Patel, Prescient’s CEO and chairman, at the company’s 120,000-square-foot man The Arvada company said it now employs 300 people and plans to add 75 more this year. Revenues, company officials said, will double this year. “We have built 3 million square feet of buildings in five states since 2013 and are on pace to build another 3 million square feet in 2017 alone, expanding our footprint into nine additional states.This is a successful, field-tested technology platform,” said Satyen Patel, executive chairman and CEO, in a statement. Prescient said it doubled the size of its Colorado manufacturing plant last year to 120,000 square feet, and last year, said it will create a 205-job, $15 million plant project in North Carolina. At the time, Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen was an investor. Ewing, New Jersey-based Church & Dwight says it expects the purchase to close in the third quarter. It said it plans to finance the purchase with debt. Church & Dwight already sells a number of oral-care products, including Arm & Hammer toothpaste, Orajel toothache pain treatments and Truly Radiant electric toothbrushes. “Oral care is important to us strategically,” said Church & Dwight CEO Matthew Farrell. “The flosser products business is a fast-growing platform and capitalizes on the trends of increased gum disease, oral care awareness across all demographics and expansion of the middle-class in emerging markets.” Water Pik was founded in 1962 as Aqua Tec Corp. by hydraulic engineer John Mattingly and dentist Gerald Moyer.
