“The way a team plays as a whole determines its success. You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world, but if they don’t play together, the club won’t be worth a dime.” Babe Ruth
As we go to print, we are in the midst of the NCAA March Madness. We will know the results by the time you receive the magazine, but regardless of who emerges the winning team (and since I live in Arizona, I hope it’s University of Arizona), all entrants face the unforgiving rules of ‘single elimination’. During March Madness, you can’t have a bad day as a team and emerge the winner. It just doesn’t work that way. In business, you rarely get multiple chances to demonstrate your capabilities to your customers, and sometimes, particularly when it’s a recently acquired customer, it is in fact,‘single elimination’. We all make mistakes, in life, and in business. We simply strive to minimize the risks and maximize the opportunities for success. I visit more than a hundred small precision manufacturing shops each year, and I see distinct patterns in very successful shops. Great companies embrace technology; often incorporating sophisticated business technology systems and automation into their operations. They are not afraid to make the significant investments into their business, whether it is software, machines, employees, and even the consumables they use that enable their machines to hum. Technology reduces the opportunity for error when making parts. When I interview a shop that has 5 axis machine tool capabilities, the discussion always comes up about a reduction in the number of operations required to make a given part – and the reduction is always substantial. When a company can reduce manufacturing a part from 9 operations to 2, they are greatly increasing the likelihood that the part will be made perfectly to spec. You can read feature articles on 2 very different companies in this issue. The first is a precision manufacturing business that is celebrating 50 years in business. What makes them so special is not only their adoption of technology, including business technology systems and 5 axis machining, but also the longevity of their employees. Clearly, when you hire and retain superior employees who become expert in the parts they are making for customers, your customers remain with you, and the ‘tribal knowledge’ inherent in your team makes you nearly indispensible to your customers.

The 2nd feature article is about a company that sells precision tooling, typically Swiss made. In an industry that is governed by nationwide ‘Big Box’ industrial product suppliers, who offer catalogs with thousands of products, this small entity has not just survived, but thrived as an independent specialty tool supplier, offering superior products, often custom, manufactured Published bi-monthly to keep precision manufacturers abreast of news and to supply a viable vendor source by some of the most high quality manufacturers of cutting tools. The company differentiates for the industry. itself by offering engineering and technical expertise you cannot find from a catalog company. Each year Modern Machine Shop surveys machine shops throughout the United States. From the results, they designate ‘Top Shops’, those that by their finding are in the top 10% of all shops. ‘Top Shops’ are more likely to have 5 axis machining capabilities, they are more likely to invest in custom/ specialty tooling, and by a 24% spread, they have implemented ERP/ MRP systems. And when it comes to employs, ‘Top Shops’ are significantly more likely to invest in apprenticeship programs, offer bonus programs, and engage their employees through team building. This is how they retain qualified employees. If you have been in a profitable business for some time, likely, you are investing in programs to grow your business. I encourage you to benchmark your business (or business unit) against others to see where there is room for improvement. It is guaranteed to help your bottom line. In fact, ‘Top Shops’ reported a profit margin that was double that of all shops in the survey, at 15% versus 8%. Until next issue, I wish you the best, and God Bless our Troops!

The assembly that this product replaced was comprised of hundreds of parts, it weighted 10 lbs., and it took more than 8 months to be designed. Initial cost for the original assembly was ~$50,000 for the first unit (reduced to $20,000 in production). With additive design and manufacturing, we replaced this assembly with a single part, it took 1 month to develop (1 day to build), the new product weighs 1.4 oz. and the cost per product was much less than that of the original assembly. This is the kind of work we can do.” Rob notes that final pricing for this project is still in progress. A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Manufacturing in U.S. Expands at Fastest Pace Since August 2014 Manufacturing expanded in February at the fastest pace since August 2014 as factory managers reported stronger orders and production. The Institute for Supply Management’s index climbed to 57.7, the sixth straight advance, from 56 a month earlier, the Tempe, Arizona-based group’s report showed Wednesday. Readings above 50 indicate growth. The median forecast in a Bloomberg survey of economists was 56.2. The ISM’s gauge of orders increased to the highest level in just over three years, while an index of production posted its best reading since March 2011. The data were preceded by recent regional indicators showing similar strength that has prevailed since the presidential election as companies begin to step up investment and the global economy stabilizes. “Things look good at this point,” Bradley Holcomb, chairman of the ISM survey committee, said on a conference call with reporters. “I don’t see anything here, or in the winds, that would suggest we can’t A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Seventeen of 18 industries surveyed by the purchasing managers’ group, the most since August 2014, posted growth in February, including textiles, apparel, machinery and computers. Furniture was the only industry that shrank. Even while manufacturing sentiment gauges have surged, actual measures of output have shown more moderate progress. The Federal Reserve’s gauge of factory production increased 0.2 percent in both December and January. Estimates for the ISM’s manufacturing index from economists in the Bloomberg survey ranged from 55 to 58.5. The group’s gauge of new orders increased to 65.1 last month from 60.4 in January. Forty-two percent of purchasing managers said orders were better in February, up from 32 percent in January and the largest share since April 2011. Order backlogs jumped to 57 from 49.5, the biggest one-month advance in four years. The pickup in unfilled orders indicates production will probably stay strong in coming months. The ISM said 26 percent of purchasing managers reported backlogs were increasing, the biggest share since May 2015. The measure of export demand improved to 55, close to a December reading that was the strongest since May 2014. The index of production rose to 62.9 in February from 61.4. The ISM’s factory employment index fell to 54.2 from 56.1 the prior month, Wednesday’s report showed. The report also factory inventories expanded in February for the first time since June 2015. Customer stockpiles, however, became leaner. The group’s gauge fell to 47.5, the fastest rate of contraction since April 2016.

SpaceX Wins Its 1St Competitively-Bid Air Force Satellite Contract Elon Musk’s SpaceX has beaten Centennial-based United Launch Alliance for the first time on a competitively-bid rocket launch contract from the U.S. Air Force. The Air Force announced Tuesday afternoon it awarded SpaceX a contract to launch a global positioning systems satellite into orbit in April 2019 at a cost of $96.5 million. The launch is scheduled to take place from Cape Canaveral, Florida. Visit Visit EDMNetwork.com US at Booth #2403 or call 1-888-289-3367
“SpaceX is proud to have been selected to support this important national security space mission,” said Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX president and COO, in a written statement. “We appreciate the confidence that the U.S. Air Force has placed in our company and we look forward to working together towards the successful launch of another GPS-III mission.” The Air Force’s Tuesday award notice said the 2019 GPS III launch attracted two bids. Only ULA and SpaceX are certified to bid for such launches. Hawthorne, California-based SpaceX, formally known as Space Exploration Technologies Inc., won a contract 11 months ago to launch another of the GPS III satellites. ULA stirred controversy in late 2015 by sitting out that bidding, saying it didn’t have RD-180 rocket engines available to bid with a launch using one of its Atlas V rockets. ULA has argued its decade-long track record of reliability should be a stronger factor in the Air Force’s selection

process for technically complex new missions like the GPS III launches, a point reiterated from spokeswoman Jessica Rye. “Over the past decade, ULA has provided unmatched reliability with 100 percent mission success and ensured more than 115 satellites were delivered safely to their orbits each and every time,” ULA’s statement said. “We look forward to continuing to provide the best value launch services to enable our customers’ critical missions.” SpaceX was started by Musk, a PayPal co-founder, in 2002.The company fought for several years be certified by the Air Force and allowed to bid against ULA for national security missions, saying its Falcon 9 rocket could launch medium-lift missions at half the price of what ULA typically has been paid. Typically, the type of work coming to Machinists Inc. is build to print. Somebody designed and created blueprints, then sent them to MI to quote and build. More and more, MI is seeing customers that need a part or a complete system designed and manufactured, sometimes installed and tested. They prefer working with a supplier that can provide more than just building to their provided plan, they need design and manufacturability for their project, in some cases. MI can provide all the detailed aspects of the design, then works collaboratively with the customer to develop the product, then proceeds into manufacturing of it at that point. This is called design-build, new to the manufacturing industry, our customers recognize the value in the process. In the construction industry, design-build yields breakthroughs in quality, cost, and schedule. It has been a proven process over many years and MI has found that is provides outstanding results in the manufacturing industry as well. MI offers a comprehensive array of services for design-build projects, that could include: engineering, mechanical, fabrication, controls and installation. “Many of our customers do not have the engineering resources at their disposal or they are involved in other projects. It allows them to subcontract the design effort out, and not have to maintain an engineering staff,” said Jeff Tomson, MI director of marketing. “The second part is, we’re finding the inception/ideato-market is faster.” Customers do not have to go through the full development process. They can go through various stages of the design process and then implement production as they go through, so it is a concurrent design-build process. Through this type of approach, Tomson said they are able to capitalize on their manufacturing strengths.
For exhibitor and attendee registration
WWW.NOCOMFG.COM
“We look at designs for manufacturability. Every time we are looking at designs, we are thinking, how am I going to build this? Thinking about how it is supposed to look in the design aspect,” Tomson said. “We
spend a lot of effort developing the design for manufacturability to review along the way.” So when it comes to manufacturing, there’s very little left to uncertainty. And the manufacturing processes are well-defined, expediting the manufacturing process, controlling costs. Design-build is changing the industry, Tomson believes. Design-build is a flexible structure for building parts and systems “We are given a concept. They pitch that out to three or four suppliers. They say, come to us with your proposal, maybe some rough order sketching and the estimate for costs, both the design and the build,”Tomson said. “Then the customer can make a selection based on past experience of the supplier, price and schedule.” In comparison, a turnkey project would be a situation where the customer has a project to be completely designed, built, installed and tested. So MI would go through the process of running a series of tests, packaging the whole thing up, taking it to the customer’s location literally anywhere in the U.S. or the world. Install and run a series of tests, then turn it over to them in production. In design-build, the typical delineation is, after it is built with some preliminary testing at MI, then it is handed over the customer. And it is up to the customer to take it from there, install it and run the first tests in their facility. Design/Build often includes proprietary processes or products. In terms of which is better, Tomson said it is very customer-driven. “Some customers would prefer to not have anyone coming into their facility. And other customers say I need this up and running and need some test articles on it.Your performance payment
is based on the success of that,”Tomson said. “It’s how the customer wants to manage it. It’s not better or worse either way.” Large and small projects can be developed with the design-build structure. MI would work with the wide variety of engineering resources available to them. MI would act as the prime contractor, so they would be responsible for the design and manufacturing effort. Tomson said they are seeing this as the trend for their customer base. “We are seeing more and more customers, big customers, that are pitching this as their preferred approach going forward. It helps reduce the time and helps them put their engineering resources on other projects they have going on internally,” Tomson said. “Delivery of the wind turbines is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2018, with commissioning expected in the fourth quarter of 2018,” Vestas added.
November 2013, Coleman won a contract to produce medium-range ballistic missile targets for MDA, a contract that goes through Sept. 2018.
Vestas employs about 3,500 people at its four Colorado factories.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the announcement,Tyler Evans, Aerojet Rocketdyne’s vice president of Rocket Shop and Defense Advanced Programs, expressed his belief that the acquisition will give Aerojet a major foothold not just in the test vehicle market but the commercial sector as well.
In a detailed report earlier this month, the Denver Business Journal’s Cathy Proctor reported that Vestas closed out last year with a blitz of orders, and wrote “the company operates a plant that builds turbine towers in Pueblo, a blades factory in Windsor and two sites in Brighton that make turbine blades and nacelles, the assemblies atop the towers that house gears and generators.”
Aerojet Rocketdyne Acquires L-3’S Coleman, Boosting Launch Portfolio Aerojet Rocketdyne announced the acquisition of Coleman Aerospace, a subsidiary of L-3, in a move executives believe will position the rocket motor company to grow into the commercial launch and, perhaps, offensive-weapons market. The acquisition was for $15 million in cash. Aerojet does not plan any major changes to Coleman in the near term, including job cuts. Coleman’s main business has been producing targets – essentially, small vehicles which look and act like enemy weapons -- that can be used by the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) to test its systems against. “We believe that there is tremendous synergy in combining the capability and system engineering vehicle integration with the rocket motor capability that we bring, so that we can provide affordable tip-to-tail solutions, if you will, for the Missile Defense Agency, for the services, and potentially for commercial launch providers as we look to grow this capability beyond just suborbital launch to potentially commercial launch,” Evans said. In a statement, Aerojet predicted Coleman will provide $40 million in revenue in 2017. Evans declined to go into details about where that figure comes from, but indicated it would be a mix of keeping up the existing MDA contract, finding new customers for Coleman’s targets, and synergies from the merger of the two companies. As an example, Evans pointed out that Coleman currently gets government-furnished rocket motors for their designs, something Aerojet Rocketdyne would now obviously be able to provide directly for their new subsidiary.

GE has actively supported education for more than 100 years. GE’s efforts focus on areas that have the greatest impact and can improve outcomes for students. In the U.S. alone, GE has invested more than $225 million and thousands of hours to support public education. Additive manufacturing, which is also known as 3D printing, involves taking digital designs from computer aided design (CAD) software, and laying horizontal cross-sections to manufacture the part. Essentially “grown” from the ground up, additive components generate far less scrap material and are typically lighter and more durable than traditional forged parts because they require less welding and machining. Freed of traditional manufacturing restrictions, additive manufacturing dramatically expands the design possibilities for engineers. GE is a leading end-user and innovator in additive manufacturing. GE has invested approximately $1.5 billion in manufacturing and additive technologies at GE’s Global Research Center (GRC), developed additive applications across six GE businesses and is pioneering services applications across the company. Late in 2016, GE signed an agreement to acquire a 75% stake in Concept Laser, a leading global supplier of additive manufacturing equipment, representing a key step in GE’s commitment to the additive revolution. In addition, GE concluded its tender offer for the shares of Arcam AB of Sweden, first initiated in September, and purchased 76.15% of the company.

Bemsco, a premier manufacturer of hydraulic, electro-mechanical assemblies and complex machined components for the aerospace industry, opened for business in 1967. Company founder, Ted Block, has worked diligently for decades developing the company with son, Jeff Block. Today, they are integral to the company’s weekly operations in coordination with General Manager, Clint Muhlestein and the management team. Bemsco has built many legacy products for the Department of Defense providing support to the U.S. military as well as private sector companies. In some cases, Bemsco’s knowledge and experience with given DOD parts has earned them the distinction of source approved manufacturer. They support a number of platforms, including the UH-60 Blackhawk Helicopter, A-10 Thunderbolt, B-1 Bomber, B-52 Stratofortress, C-130 Hercules, C-135 Stratolifter, C-5 Galaxy, E-3A Sentry, F-15 Eagle, F-35 Lightning, F-16 Fighting Falcon, CH-47 Chinook Helicopter, CH-53 Super Stallion, M-39 Cannon and many other commercial and military aircraft. Muhlestein says, “Bemsco’s success is due in a very large part to our employees. Our management team is second to none and has an average of more than 32 years in the industry and they have incredible expertise in aerospace manufacturing and processing.” Bemsco excels at difficult to machine parts that often require high-temperature, heat-treated exotic metals including Inconel, Hastelloy, Stainless Steel, and Titanium to name a few. They are also working with General Atomics, test machining Ferrium S53, which is a corrosion resistant, ultra high-strength steel for structural aerospace and other applications where 300M (BS S155) and 4340 are typically used. Muhlestein says that the S53 steel provides much greater resistance to general corrosion and to stress corrosion cracking. Bemsco is AS9100/ISO 9001 certified offering superior machining (milling and turning) capabilities. With an inventory of 23 machines in-house (14 CNC machines), V.P., Jeff Block says that Bemsco is primarily a Mazak shop. “We own 12 Mazak machines, having used them for decades. Our Quality Assurance department is furnished with two Zeiss Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM), and three Trimos Vertical Micro-Heights.” Bemsco’s superior quality has earned them ‘Performance A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Excellence Awards’ from Boeing, Sikorsky, and Lockheed. Bemsco’s latest machine tool purchase introduced long-bed five axis machining. Block says the new Mazak VTC800/30-SR was purchased for a specific job. They had been machining a part for a customer prior to their purchase of the five axis Mazak, but it was cumbersome, requiring nine operations. Block says their five axis Mazak VTC-800/30-SR reduced machining to four operations. “Extensive savings in set-up and production time were achieved through our new technology”, he adds. After reviewing other five axis machine brands, Bemsco purchased the Mazak VTC800/30-SR. Bemsco also reviewed four Mazak alternatives. They chose this machine for a number of reasons: • It has a large work zone (118” x 31” x 28”), and it offers a fixed table. The Mazak
VTC enables Bemsco to machine extremely heavy and long work pieces, ideal for Bemsco because they are manufacturing parts 10’ or longer in length. Muhlestein says they would need a machining area twice as long if they didn’t have the fixed table and vertical traveling column that the Mazak VTC offers. The Mazak VTC-800/SR additionally offers a table partition, and this allows the long machine table to be transformed into two separate work areas. • The footprint of the VTC-800 is ideal for Bemsco, because of their very full machine shop environment, utilizing nearly all of their 22,000 square feet dedicated to machining (the company operates in a 36,000 square foot building in the heart of Salt Lake City). Muhlestein says with competitive five axis machines, they would’ve needed 35-40% more space for the new machine. Their machines must be extremely reliable, always up and running, in order for Bemsco to continue to earn the ‘A Report Cards’ that they get from their suppliers for their quality and on-time delivery. Muhlestein says, “Bemsco’s philosophy is Continued next page A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

to buy superior, high end machine tools.” He adds, “Service is key to us, and over the years we have been very pleased with both Smith Machinery, our local Mazak dealer, and with Mazak’s service capabilities.” He notes that with Mazak, Bemsco gets two tiers of service. Smith Machinery has its own dedicated service team through its Smith-Neotech Service Group, and Mazak has a staff of more than 300 service people located throughout the United States, with two in the state of Utah. “The technical expertise through Mazak and Smith Machinery is the best I have ever seen.” To learn more about how Smith Machinery Company can help you with your machining needs, call (801) 263-6403 or visit smithmachinetools.com Bemsco offers its customers half of a century of aerospace manufacturing excellence, particularly in the Aerospace and Defense industries. Trump Budget: New Priorities, New Opportunities
cuts in domestic spending in several government enterprises. It is vital that cuts do not negatively impact FAA certification procedures.
President Trump’s preliminary budget submission reflects a substantial re-ordering of priorities. The Aerospace Industries Association welcomes the President’s proposal as the vital first step in determining national priorities for the coming years and looks forward to working with him and Congress as these proposals become law.
AIA is pleased to see continued support for NASA’s major programs of record including the International Space Station, Space Launch System/ Orion and James Webb Space Telescope. However, cuts to NASA Earth Science missions,Aeronautics research and future NOAA satellite programs risk our access to key information that is used across government agencies for national security, public safety and community planning applications.
AIA embraces the increase in defense spending as a good first step. Civilian and uniformed military leaders have acknowledged that inadequate and uncertain budgets have forced our military to raid long-term investment accounts in order to keep our deployed forces ready. Unfortunately, the $603 billion defense budget proposed by the President today will not go far enough toward restoring the lost buying power and delayed modernization imposed by Budget Control Act caps. AIA supports raising the base defense budget to at least $640 billion in FY2018, as proposed by then-Secretary of Defense Robert Gates in his FY2012 defense budget plan, and by both Senate Armed Services Chairman McCain and House Armed Services Chairman Thornberry in their recent proposals for FY2018 defense spending. AIA also is encouraged by the President’s continued commitment to reduce burdensome regulations. This budget places a clear priority on promoting a regulatory environment that unshackles business and will allow our industry to fulfill its great potential to create high-skill, high-paying manufacturing jobs. While we support much of the President’s plan, we are concerned about
The interconnected nature of many government programs mean that cuts will have far-reaching impacts. For instance, the Departments of Commerce and State play important roles in managing U.S. security cooperation with key allies and partners and supporting the global competitiveness of American manufacturers. It is critical to consider the impact of these spending cuts on those missions and our industry’s continued ability to generate a trade surplus – $90 billion in 2016. Finally, we are concerned that the 13% reduction in Education funding will eliminate federally funded Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programs such as the 21st Century Community Learning Centers. STEM education is essential to our industry to ensure that there is a sufficient and capable talent pool entering higher education in STEM-related degree programs. AIA looks forward to working with PresidentTrump and Congress to refine these proposals and promote investments that ensure our national security, contribute to economic growth and create jobs across America. In the cash-and-stock deal, MacDonald, Dettwiler & Associates Ltd., or MDA, of Vancouver will acquire the Westminster satellite imaging company and assume DigitalGlobe’s $1.2 billion in debt. Thousands of orange-clad people gathering for a Denver Broncos victory “The combination will bring together complementary space-related capabilities, creating a stronger company uniquely positioned to capture growth in the U.S., Canadian and global Earth observation and geospatial services markets,” the companies said. The deal — subject to regulatory approval and a vote by shareholders of both companies — is expected to close in the second half of the year. DigitalGlobe is the largest U.S.-based commercial satellite imagery company, selling images and data to online mapping companies, real estate developers, industry and for declassified U.S government intelligence that can be shared with foreign governments and aid agencies. It has five satellites collecting images and data about the earth’s surface. The company employs nearly 1,600 people, including contract workers. The 737 MAX 9 is the second member of Boeing’s 737 MAX family, with a maximum capacity of 220 passengers and a range of 3,515nm. The airplane now begins system checks, fueling, and engine runs on the flight line. Once completed, the airplane will begin flight testing in the coming weeks – the final phase of verification of the operational characteristics and overall performance of a new airplane. “The 737 MAX team continues to do a fantastic job getting us to these important milestones right on schedule,” said Keith Leverkuhn, vice president and general manager of the 737 MAX program, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “Our primary focus is delivering an aircraft that has the legendary reliability our 737 customers depend on, plus the optimized flexibility and range capability they desire.” The 737 MAX 9 is scheduled to enter service in 2018.The 737 MAX 8 is on track to deliver to customers in the second quarter of 2017. The MAX 8 and 9 will be followed in 2019 by the smaller MAX 7 and higher capacity MAX 200, while studies and discussions continue with customers on growing the family. The 737 MAX is the fastest-selling airplane in Boeing history,

industry grew over time. In 1955, the Glenn L. Martin Company established a plant to build intercontinental ballistic missiles in Waterton Canyon, just southwest of Denver. Ball Aerospace, a business of Ball Corporation, was founded in Boulder, Colorado, in 1956 by Ed Ball, one of the sons of the original Ball Brothers in collaboration with faculty and graduate students from the University of Colorado. By then, the “Centennial State” had long been a site for military training and activities – think of the Army’s famous 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale, whose veterans helped found the modern ski industry. In the 1940s and 1950s, Colorado added aerospace to its military role. Aurora’s Buckley Air Force Base, begun as an Army Air Corps base. In 1943, today is an Air Force Space Command base with responsibility for air operations, space-based missile warning capabilities, space surveillance and communications operations. In 1954, Air Force Secretary Harold Talbott announced a site north of Colorado Springs as the new location for the Air Force Academy. The youngest of the nation’s five service academies has distinguished itself by graduating thousands of pilots, astronauts and officers who have provided leadership for U.S. air and space activities. In and around Colorado Springs are a number of sophisticated military aerospace commands: The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), United States Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) and Air Force Space Command (AFSPC). Colorado Springs also is home base for the Space Foundation, whose annual Space Symposium at the world-famous Broadmoor Hotel draws civil, military and commercial space leaders from around the globe. AIA and its member companies regularly participate in the Space Symposium, scheduled this year for April 3–6. At the 2016 Space Symposium, AIA’s David Melcher spoke to attendees about the need for a 21st Century Space Competitiveness Strategy. Given that Colorado has produced a disproportionate number of astronauts, including one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts, Scott Carpenter; and Apollo 13 command module pilot Jack Swigert, whose heroic image in statue greets visitors to Denver International Airport and the U.S. Capitol; it’s fitting that the space community gathers in Colorado Springs each year. Of course, Colorado is a hub much of the innovation occurring in the aerospace industry right now. Today, companies like Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company and Ball Aerospace support multiple commercial and government programs from Boulder, Colorado Springs and Denver-area locations. “Colorado is at the intersection of virtually every element that makes the aerospace industry successful. It attracts a talented, diverse workforce with the high-tech skills aerospace demands,” says Mark Valerio, vice president, Enterprise Solutions and Integration for Lockheed Martin Space Systems. “A strong network of suppliers and small businesses complement a number of large prime contractors that operate here. The state government also works proactively to create an environment where aerospace can thrive. Few places offer that incredible mix of talent, partnerships and infrastructure.”
Lockheed’s Colorado-based programs include Orion, NASA’s next-generation deep space crew exploration vehicle that will take astronauts to the Moon, Mars and beyond. Orion’s engineering and design is led out of Lockheed’s Denver office. The company also built the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft – operated from Denver – that NASA launched in September 2016 on a seven-year mission to the asteroid Bennu. Lockheed Martin also supports a growing commercial satellite industry with capabilities and partnerships in Colorado that are improving the design and manufacturing process. At a facility in Denver, the company is working with additive manufacturing technology – and materials from plastics and polymers to titanium – to produce 3D-printed satellite parts, which can be manufactured in half the time and at a fraction of the cost of traditionally manufactured components. When it launched in 2011, Lockheed’s Juno was the first interplanetary spacecraft made with parts produced through additive manufacturing. Meanwhile, Lockheed can trace its current work for military customers back to the military command, control and reconnaissance missions that accounted for Colorado’s aerospace growth throughout the 20th century. Programs and capabilities supported by Lockheed in the state include the Army Warfighter Information Network, the Air Force’s global intelligence processing system, the Air Force Operations Center and the Missile Defense Agency Battle Management System. “We do a lot of work that entails capabilities related to intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance for different types of platforms,” said Suzanne Smith of Lockheed Martin. The company had been close to leasing manufacturing space in Centennial when conversations with MSU led York to commit to being on campus instead, said Dirk Wallinger, founder and CEO. “Once we began talking with the university and discovering what kind of university they are, it made more and more sense,” he said. “The opportunity to engage young talent early and help train that next generation of engineers was particularly attractive to me.” York Space Systems is a year-old satellite manufacturing company specializing in small and medium-sized satellites. It plans to have up to 15,000-square-feet in MSU Denver’s Aerospace and Engineering Sciences building for small satellite manufacturing and engineering, and a center for operating its satellites in orbit. The 142,000-square-foot building is on track to open in July. “This partnership is a manifestation of our belief that we create public-private partnerships where students gain theory and practice, and our partners have the opportunity to advance their own companies,” said Stephen Jordan, MSU Denver’s president. “Having the opportunity to work with York Space Systems as they greatly impact Colorado’s Aerospace industry is an exciting opportunity not only for our students but also faculty, and the community.” Having space in the $70 million facility will give the York capacity to make between 150 and 200 satellites a year, Wallinger said. York’s full-time employees will start out being about 80 percent of the staff using the space, with the remaining 20 percent being students and interns helping the company while applying the advanced manufacturing techniques, software development and aerospace engineering skills their learning in MSU’s aerospace program, Wallinger said.

Legislature OKs $4 Million Ongoing Funds for UTC Engineering Initiative The Utah Technology Council, joined by Utah’s high tech industry and the state’s eight computer science and engineering programs, has secured $4 million in ongoing funds from the Utah State legislature to continue to fund the Engineering Initiative, further expanding the local supply of qualified technical talent.
Since the 2015 appropriation, the funding of this initiative has added 657 additional computer science and engineering graduates per year in the statewide system—more than double the 250 promised in that appropriations request. Despite this astounding increase, thousands of jobs remain unfilled, hindering industry growth and expansion. However, thanks to this increase in funding, the initiative will address this critical issue by: • Recruiting more faculty in high demand disciplines. • Building capacity by creating more class sections and developing online alternatives. • Boosting retention through academic advising and career counseling. • Strengthening outreach to women and underrepresented minorities. “This is one of our greatest impacts in expanding tech grads, now with $38 million in funding annually, further amplified by matching funds from higher ed institutions. Creating an outstanding, well-educated workforce to feed into these high paying jobs is a win-win for Utah taxpayers as it increases taxable income, diversifies the economy, and stimulates additional economic growth,” he added. In addition to UTC, 81 technology companies statewide endorsed the Request for Appropriation led by Representative Val Peterson and supported by legislative leadership. Richard Brown, Dean of Engineering at the University of Utah said, “As the technology industry and Utah legislature continue to come together there is limitless potential for Utah’s economy.” Brown continued, “This funding will make an incredible difference in boosting capacity at engineering programs statewide.”
Flight Of Northrop’s Victor-Model Black Hawk Opens Door For More Cockpit Business The first flight of the US Army’s UH-60 Victor-model Black Hawk helicopter last month marks the beginnings of new opportunities for Northrop Grumman in the global cockpit avionics market, according to a company executive. Northrop Grumman won a US Army contract to upgrade Black Hawk L-model helicopter cockpits from analogue to integrated, open-architecture digital ones. The converted version is called the Victor-model. Back when Northrop first won the contract, Jeff Palombo said the company was looking ahead to how it could take technology and lessons learned from the UH-60V program into the future -- perhaps even as far as the service’s plans to field a new helicopter in the 2030s. Three prototype helicopters have spent the last two years in the Prototype Integration Facility -- the PIF -- at Redstone Arsenal,Alabama, undergoing integration. The plan is to ultimately convert 760 L-model variants to the V-model which brings them to an M-model standard, the most up-to-date variant of the Black Hawk. Around the world, countries with L-model Black Hawks might be interested in upgrading to a digital cockpit or they might be interested in streamlining a fleet of different aircraft with the same cockpit to help reduce logistics and training costs of a mixed-fleet or they could design brand new cockpits using the technology for brand new helicopters, Palombo described. It’s clear many countries, including in the Middle East, are looking to upgrade equipment already procured. Budgets are tight as oil prices remain down, even for the richest countries, and there’s more concern over how to sustain existing equipment than buying new. Source: Defense News

OIL MIST AND SMOKE IN YOUR SHOP?
“What these numbers tell you is that the solar industry is a force to be reckoned with,” said Abigail Ross Hopper, SEIA’s president and CEO. “Solar’s economically-winning hand is generating strong growth across all market segments nationwide, leading to more than 260,000 Americans now employed in solar.”
Low-Cost, Highly Efficient Mist and Smoke Collectors Designed Specifically for the Metalworking Industry
Success this year was driven largely by the utility-scale segment, which was bolstered by a pipeline of projects initially hedging against the extension of the federal Investment Tax Credit. Not only did it represent the most MW installed, but the utility-scale segment also featured the highest growth rate of any segment, growing 145 percent from 2015.
www.mistcollectors.com 1-800-645-4174
“In a banner year for U.S. solar, a record 22 states each added more than 100 megawatts,” said Cory Honeyman, GTM Research’s associate director of U.S. solar research. “While U.S. solar grew across all segments, what stands out is the double digit gigawatt boom in utility-scale solar, primarily due to solar’s cost competitiveness with natural gas alternatives.”
U.S. Solar Market Soars in 2016, Utah Now Sixth Largest State for Solar
In its biggest year to date, the United States solar market nearly doubled its annual record, topping out at 14,625 megawatts (MW) of solar photovoltaic (PV) installed in 2016.This represents a 95 percent increase over 2015’s then record-breaking 7,493 MW. GTM Research and the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) previewed this data in advance of their upcoming U.S. Solar Market Insight report. In the new ranking, Utah snagged the sixth-highest spot for solar states in the US, jumping ten spots from 2015.The state’s solar installations increased 500 percent year over year, to 1,489 MW total vs. 248 MW in 2015. California is far away #1 at (18,300 MW), followed by North Carolina and Arizona. Utah is one of nine states that have installed more than one GW of solar capacity. At the end of 2012, only one state (California) had done so. For the first time ever, U.S. solar ranked as the number one source of new electric generating capacity additions on an annual basis. Altogether, solar accounted for 39 percent of new capacity additions A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

The non-residential market also exceeded expectations with two major growth drivers in the segment. The first is community solar, adding a record total of more than 200 MW, led by Minnesota and Massachusetts. Second, rate design and net energy metering fueled a rush in project development and installation growth across a number of major state markets, most notably in California. For the first time since 2011, non-residential installation growth surpassed residential solar growth, which posted a still-impressive 2,583 MW. While growth in California’s residential market has begun to level out, strong growth in markets like Maryland, New Jersey and a handful of emerging states where solar has achieved grid parity, helped the residential segment to grow 19 percent year-over-year. As a result of a remarkable 2016, the U.S. is now home to more than 1.3 million solar PV installations with a cumulative capacity of over 40 gigawatts.
SpaceX Says It Can Beat NASA To Moon SpaceX has two paying customers for a lunar flyaround, and will try to send them on their way before the end of 2018, founder Elon Musk said.
If the ambitious schedule is met, it would beat an accelerated mission NASA is studying to send two astronauts on an eight-day flight around the Moon on a heavy-lift Space Launch System (SLS)/ Orion capsule combination before the end of 2019. President Donald Trump’s NASA transition team has asked for the study to see if the agency can carry out the space spectacular before the next presidential election in 2020.
Musk said his company will give NASA priority if it decides to send its own astronauts on the Moon mission on a Falcon Heavy/ Dragon 2 vehicle stack. He believes the U.S. space agency will have human-rated its vehicles for flights to the International Space Station (ISS) under its $6.8 billion commercial crew program before SpaceX sends them deeper into space. “We’re expecting to fly a human-rated Dragon 2 on a Falcon 9 at the end of this year, but without people on board, just a test flight to the space station,” Musk said in a press teleconference. “Then about six months later we would fly with a NASA crew to the space station on Falcon 9/Dragon 2, and then about six months after that—assuming the schedule holds—by the end of next year is when we would do the lunar orbit mission.” Musk declined to name the two individuals who approached SpaceX looking for a ride around the Moon, saying only that they have made a “substantial deposit” on a space-tourist flight that would cost more than NASA will be paying for flights to the ISS. Instead, he said SpaceX hopes to conduct more of the commercial lunar flights, and predicted that eventually they could account for 20% of company revenues. The roughly five-day lunar missions would require the Falcon Heavy—essentially three Falcon 9 first stages mounted in tandem below a single upper stage—and a Dragon 2 modified to handle deep-space communications. “The heat shield is quite massively overdesigned,” he said of the capsule’s ability to withstand re-entry at lunar-return velocities. “It’s actually designed for multiple Earth-orbit re-entry missions, so that you could actually do up to 10 Earth-orbit re-entry missions with the same heat shield. So that means it can do at least one, conceivably even two lunar entry velocity missions.” Like NASA’s planned first human mission with SLS/Orion, currently targeted for 2021 after an unmanned flight late next year, the SpaceX plan would send the human-rated Dragon on a direct-return trajectory around the Moon. Musk said the exact trajectory is still in development. Despite his optimism about human-rating the Dragon 2, Musk’s plan has its skeptics. The Government Accountability Office reported earlier this month that both SpaceX and Boeing, NASA’s other commercial-crew contractor, may not be able to fly their capsules until 2019. Because NASA may have waited too late to order more seats on Russia’s Soyuz vehicles, the agency also is studying contingency plans for continuing to get its astronauts to the ISS. Also to be determined is the fueling sequence for the Falcon 9. The Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel warned in its 2016 annual report that the current “load-and-go” sequence, which pumps propellants into the launcher after the payload is in place, may be too dangerous for human crews. The warning came before an on-pad Falcon 9 explosion during fueling last year destroyed an Israeli communications satellite. Biomerics to Build Corporate Headquarters in Utah Biomerics and the Governor’s Office of Economic D eve l opment (GOED) announced the medical device plastics manufacturer will build its corporate headquarters in Utah, adding up to 380 jobs to the community and an estimated $38.5 million in capital investment. “Biomerics is a Utah success story and a major player in both manufacturing and life sciences industries,” said Val Hale, executive director of GOED. “We are grateful for their commitment to support the continued growth of these industries in the state.” Biomerics specializes in the design, development and production of medical devices for diagnostic and interventional procedures for the cardiovascular, structural heart, cardiac rhythm management and vascular access markets. The investment will be used to build a new 200,000 square foot corporate headquarters. The company, formed in 2009, has grown into a leading supplier for the $250 billion dollar medical device industry. Biomerics has five locations, including a recent expansion in Minnesota. “Biomerics looks forward to expanding in Utah,” saidTravis Sessions, CEO of Biomerics. “Utah provides a unique business environment and community for the growth of the company. We are proud to be part of this community and appreciate the support of GOED and EDCUtah in this important decision.” The Biomerics project will create up to 380 jobs over the next eight years. The total wages in aggregate are required to exceed 110 percent of the county average wage. The projected new state wages over the life of the agreement are expected to be approximately $133,035,032. Projected new state tax revenues, as a result of corporate, payroll and sales taxes, are estimated to be $15,022,082 over eight years. “Biomerics will bring additional strength, not only to the manufacturing industry in Utah, but also to the thriving life sciences industry in the state,” said Theresa Foxley, president and CEO of the Economic Development Corporation of Utah (EDCUtah). “We congratulate them and look forward to the innovative solutions they will provide to Utah’s vast medical device community.” Biomerics may earn up to 20 percent of the new state taxes they will pay over the eight-year life of the agreement in the form of a post-performance Economic Development Tax Increment Finance (EDTIF) tax credit rebate. As part of the contract with Biomerics, the GOED Board of Directors has approved a post-performance tax credit rebate not to exceed $3,004,416. Each year as Biomerics meets the criteria in its contract with the state, it will earn a portion of the total tax credit rebate. Biomerics is working closely with the local community to determine the best location for the expansion. Exact location will be announced at a future date.
